Select Items from her West Chatham Home (Lots 501-656)
J
ulie Harris was as beloved on Broadway as she was on Cape Cod, where she made her home for many years. Celebrated throughout her nearly sixty-year career as the “Soul of American Theater”, she was also known for being incredibly generous and kind-hearted, earning her legions of fans both on-stage and off. It is our great honor to present the following items from her estate and to provide you a glimpse into her charming house in West Chatham. Answering the time-honored question “If you knew the world would end tomorrow, what would you do?” Julie Harris is said to have responded “I would go to the theatre.” She devoted her life to the craft of acting, winning six Tony Awards, including a special Lifetime Achievement Award, three Emmys and one Grammy. In 1994 she was awarded the National Medal of the Arts, and in 2005, she was named a Kennedy Center Honoree. At the White House ceremony in her honor, President George W. Bush remarked, “It's hard to imagine the American stage without the face, the voice, and the limitless talent of Julie Harris.” Julia Ann “Julie” Harris was born December 2, 1925 in Grosse Point, Michigan. She attended the Hewitt School in New York City, the Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School in Colorado and the Yale School of Drama before making her Broadway debut in 1945. Some of her most famous stage roles include Sally Bowles in “I Am a Camera”, Emily Dickinson in the one-woman play “The Belle of Amherst”, Joan of Arc in “The Lark” and Mary Todd Lincoln in “The Last of Mrs. Lincoln”. She appeared on screen dozens of times, most notably as Frankie in “The Member of the Wedding”, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award. Despite suffering a stroke in 2001, Harris continued working until 2009, when she was well into her eighties. She died in August 2013.

501. AMERICAN SCHOOL Contemporary Dramatic portrait of a woman, probably Julie Harris portraying the role of writer Isak Dinesen in the play “Lucifer’s Child” by William Luce. She is dressed in an exotic white gown and has a peacock feather in her hair. While her body is facing the left side of the canvas, her face is turned toward the viewer. Signed lower right “Calvin”. Oil on canvas, 34” x 30”. Unframed. 500/700 “Lucifer’s Child” is based on the writings of Danish author Karen Blixen, best known for the book Out of Africa, which she wrote under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Some sources credit Ms. Harris with conceiving the idea of the play; she traveled to Blixen’s homes in Kenya and Denmark before obtaining the rights to commission Luce to write the one-woman show. Harris received a Tony nomination for Best Actress for her role in the play, which opened on Broadway in 1991. Many advertisements for the production, as well as the published version of the play, feature Julie Harris in the same costume as seen here.

Julie Harris is said to have personally enjoyed reading biographies, therefore it is not surprising some of her most famous roles are ones in which she played an historical character. Julie Harris played Mary Todd Lincoln in the three-act drama “The Last of Mrs. Lincoln”, which ran on Broadway from December 1972 to February 1973. The play spans the last seventeen tragic years of Mrs. Lincoln’s life, from just after the death of her husband through desperate poverty, the death of her son Tad, her commitment to a mental institution and her final years living with her sister. Harris won a Tony Award in 1973 for her performance and reprised her role for the 1976 film adaptation.

The Broadway production of “The Belle of Amherst” opened in April 1976 and ran for 116 performances. Julie Harris portrayed fifteen different characters in the one-woman show, which was based on the life of reclusive poet Emily Dickinson and set in her Amherst, Massachusetts home. Harris won a Tony for Best Actress in a Play for her performance, which the Wall Street Journal reviewer described, "With her technical ability and her emotional range, Miss Harris can convey profound inner turmoil at the same time that she displays irrepressible gaiety of spirit." She appeared in a televised PBS production and toured with the play throughout the country for several years.

What is thrilling about the theater is that it’s a forum where people come and for those two or three hours belong to something, to ideas, to a feeling of being a member of the human race. I want to touch people with the meaning of life.
