welcome to IT Sligo’s
lifelong learning course listings for january 2006 In all facets of our lives the knowledge and skills we need in order to be active and contributing members of our society is changing. Whether it is in the way we manage our health or our financial affairs, our social or our working lives, we must constantly develop new skills and gain new knowledge and insights into the way the world is changing. If we do not update our knowledge, skills and competencies we will find ourselves isolated and excluded. In the past the phrase 'haves and have nots' was used to make the distinction between those who had wealth and those who didn't. Increasingly the distinction is also being made on the basis of whether or not individuals or groups have the tools and skills to access information and to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world.
01
Here at the Institute we have undertaken significant developments in lifelong learning in the past few years including the appointment of a Head of Lifelong Learning, the establishment of the Centre for Research and Advanced Education, developing a wide range of new programmes in different formats; part time, distance learning and block release. We are constantly looking for ideas to improve the services we provide to people in the communities we serve and welcome any suggestions in that regard. We believe that in this handbook you will find evidence of our commitment to life long learning as presented in our Strategic Plan and that you will find a range of courses that will enable you to enrich your lives, develop new skills and acquire new knowledge. engineering course: CALIBRATION SYSTEMS
15
This one day intensive course is intended for anyone who: • Uses instruments to measure quality characteristics. • Calibrates instruments. • Audits calibration systems. • Manages an organisation’s measurement management system.
Participants will have a clear understanding of where measurement fits into the overall quality system and will feel comfortable with tasks such as: 1. Instrument selection. 2. Interpretation of calibration certificates. 3. Instrument calibration and 4. Calibration system management.
It is relevant to all sectors of the economy. Every day decisions are made based on data captured by measurement processes. Very often little attention is paid to the quality of this data. How can we be confident that the quality of the data captured is adequate? How can we reduce the risk of making bad decisions based on bad data?
The course also introduces the concept of measurement uncertainty and deals with it in a nonstatistical manner, which is adequate for most industrial applications.
The science of measurement is referred to as metrology and is an integral part of any quality management system. Various standards have been developed to help people engaged in measurement. These include: ISO9001, ISO10012 as well as ISO17025. Unfortunately, these provide more information on frameworks than specifics for the day-to-day practitioner. This course explains the world of industrial metrology in easy to understand terms. It links the product or process characteristics to the metrological requirements of the measurement process.
Presenter: Bob Kennedy PhD. Bob is a lecturer in the School of Engineering and lectures on its mechanical and quality management programmes. He holds a primary degree in manufacturing engineering a Masters on quality management systems and a PhD in community excellence. On graduation he worked for a number of years in various engineering and quality positions in Abbott Ireland Ltd, Donegal. For some years now he has offered this one-day course on calibration either as a public or in-company training programme.
