Introduction Going for Gold is the new system used to monitor the quality of all Moodle courses. The criteria is set at three levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold. In order to achieve each level, your course must satisfy the indicative criteria shown below: Levels Gold

Indicative Criteria 1. Completion of Bronze and Silver Levels. 2. Multimedia usage e.g. videos, sound files, animated materials i.e. Flash. 3. Effective use of the Gradebook to provide learners with feedback 4. Navigation issues addressed (this could be using the section links block) 5. Use of the communication tools such as Chat, Forums, MoodleTxt regularly (once a week/fortnight) 6. Evidence of use of the Wiki’s/Blog Tools or Journal for reflection 7. Use of the Glossary for Key Terms Silver 1. Completion of Bronze Level. 2. Use of Prepared Materials such as NLN, Hodder or Jorum materials 3. Effective use of Hot Potato Quizzes and/or Moodle Quizzes 4. Effective use of Assignment Module (including Turnitin Assignments) 5. Brief use of News forum to communicate with learners 6. Evidence of learners regularly using Moodle (at least once/twice a week) 7. Use of Moodle SMS text messaging 8. Use of the Calendar for important dates such as assignment, trips etc‌ Bronze 1. Clear structure of layout such as titles and module/unit titles in each block 2. Use of Images and/or Colour 3. Lesson Resources and Assignment Briefs added 4. Links to relevant websites All other courses will be working towards Bronze. This is an adaptable criteria which can be negotiate. For more Information, please speak to Cheryl Howells or Sarah Ashley. When your course has been graded it is important that you continue to develop your course towards the next grade. This can be done individually or by booking into training sessions.

Here are some tips on achieving that Gold Course:

Top Ten Tips for Getting that Gold Star 1. Use the Calendar to inform your learners of deadlines, hand-in dates etc. 2. Add some colour/images to your course. 3. Use Hot Potatoes or Moodle Quizzes 4. Use the assignment upload for assessments and plagiarism detection. 5. Use the Glossary to help with Key terms and definitions. 6. Browse the NLN Repository and add interactive features to your course.


7. Use the Gradebook to give learners instant feedback. 8. Use the section links block or create anchors to make navigation easier. 9. Communicate with your learners via text messaging, forums and blogs. 10. Encourage learners to use the Journal feature for reflective practice.

Login To login into Moodle you will require a username and password, this is your Network login and password. E.g. Username: 999.j.bloggs Password: ******

Your Courses You will find the courses that you have been enrolled in, on the left-hand side of your screen. Click on the title of the course to access it. NB you must be a Teacher on this course to edit the content.

Editing your course The most important thing to remember when wanting to edit your course is to turn on the editing. You will see some small icons in the boxes on your course to edit the box click the edit icon.

Assigning other members of staff/learners to my course The Administration Block will appear on the left-hand side of your screen. To assign a role to your course click the Assign Roles button. You will then be taken to a box listing all the different roles. You can only assign; Non-editing teachers and Students. You should have a list of Learners ID numbers on your register; use these to assign them to a course.

To assign a role double click on the role, type a name or student id number into the search bar, and click search. Select the name you want to add to the role and click add. The name will then appear in the opposite box, and the role has been assigned.

Activities/Resources Moodle allows you to add a variety of activities and resources. If you would like to find out what each one does click the question mark icon. To add an activity or resource you follow the same procedures, click the drop-down menus select the item you want to add and it will open. Remember to place the activities and resource in the box where you want them to be viewed. Remember to always entitle the item something that you and your learners will recognise.


Adding Blocks Adding a block is the same procedure as adding an activity/resource, generally blocks are used to add activities to the sides of your moodle page such as course calendars, blogs, viewing online users, moodle text or quiz results. When you’ve clicked the drop-down menu and selected the block you want, the block will appear at the side of the page. You can edit and move these using the edit and move arrows. When changing your view from teacher to learner you can view how your course looks from the learners’ point of view.

Using the Calendar 1. To add items to the calendar, click on the month.

2. Click New Event

3. Select a Course Event. 4. Add your event to your Calendar

Adding colour 1. Click on the Edit button 2. Highlight the text 3. Click on the colour icon 4. Select a Colour 5. Select Save Change


Adding images 1. Click on the Edit button 2. Click on the Insert Image Button 3. Browse for an image and locate it on your user area. 4. Upload the Image 5. Click on the image and give it alternative text 6. Click Ok, resize and position the image accordingly 7. Select Save Changes

Using the Glossary 1. Click on Add an Activity 2. Select Glossary 3. Give the glossary a name, and look through the different settings and select the ones you need. 4. Save and Return to Course.

When you’ve added the glossary you can add the entries or ask your learners to add the entries.

Adding NLN Material 1. Click on Add a Resource 2. Add NLN Materials 3. Browse for the Material 4. Click on the item you would like 5. Click add to Moodle Course 6. Save and Return to Course.


Adding Forums 1. Click on Add an Activity 2. Add a Forum 3. Name the Forum 4. Select the type of Forum you would like i.e. Q & A 5. Set the parameters for your learners within the forum 6. Save Changes.

Using the Journal 1. Click on Add an Activity 2. Add a Journal 3. Name the journal. 4. Set instructions for the learners. 5. Save and return to Course.
