Introduction What is Turnitin? Turnitin is an Internet-based plagiarism-detection service. At College we can ask our learners to submit their assignments online, and they can be checked for plagiarism.

Why Use it? Learners can submit assignments via Turnitin, as a deterrent to plagiarism. But also it allows Staff to use the built in Online Marking Tool, and provide instant feedback to the learners.

Adding a Turnitin Assignment via Moodle To add an assignment to Moodle, you must first log into your course, and turn you’re editing on. 1. Click on Add an Activity 2. Click on Assignment >Turnitin

3. Give the Assignment a Title 4. Give it a description. You may want put the assignment brief in there. 5. Set the Grading Scale.


6. Set a Upload date and perhaps think about preventing Late Submissions 7. Save and Return to Course.

Setting up Turnitin 1. Select the type of assignment you would like. Look carefully at the descriptions on the righthand side. 2. Usually you would select a Paper Assignment.

3. Select the date and time again. (Read the description in the pale yellow carefully) 4. Select More Options


5. If you would like to Mark it Online select> Turnitin Rubrics

6. Select when you would like the learners to see their Originality Report (plagiarism score)

7. Decide whether you would like the learners to see the Originality Report. Whether you would like to include the Bibliography in the Report.

8. Decide whether you would like Anonymous Marking.

9. Submit your Changes.


Looking at Submitted Assignments 1. Click on the Assignment. 2. Select the option in the top right hand corner – View n Submitted Assignments 3. You will see all of the uploaded assignment. If you chose anonymous marking, names will not be revealed until asked. If you cannot see all the names or there is not enough assignments submitted, you may need to press the Roster Sync Buttons.

The report will show how much plagiarism there is. 4. Click on the Apple to Mark online. 5.

Click on the Report percentage to look at the Plagiarism Report.

6. Each occurrence is colour co-ordinated. Click on the URL to view where it matches.


Anything around 40% and below is deemed acceptable however look closely at what exactly has been plagiarised. It may be that it has not been referenced.

Online Marking To mark an assignment online, you need to select the Apple Icon.

To add comments 1. Click on the Highlighter (you can change a colour if you wish). 2. Highlight the text 3. Add a Comment pop-up box opens. Type in here and press Save.

If there are a number of comments that you are going to repeat during your marking, add them to your clipboard, by clicking on the

image.


QuickMark Sets You can use the QuickMark Sets to add comments such as Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar or incorrect formatting of the text. Just select the icon and drag it to the correct place on the page.

Finished Marking Don’t forget to Grade the Paper. (Top Right-Hand Corner)

When you’ve finished marking the assignment, make sure you click the Save Button. Then you can close the paper or move onto the next one.

If you choose to close, you will see all the papers which you have marked now have a green tick next to the apple and a grade.
