Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO– εξακολουθούν να αποτελούν αναπόσπαστο μέρος της καθημερινής ζωής της πόλης. Οι ντόπιοι σταματούν συχνά για μια στιγμή περισυλλογής ή για να ανάψουν ένα κερί και, φυσικά, είστε ευπρόσδεκτοι να τους ακολουθήσετε. Νωρίς στην αγορά Μια πρωινή επίσκεψη στην αγορά Καπάνι αποτελεί το ιδανικό ξεκίνημα της ημέρας για πολλούς Θεσσαλονικείς. Η αγορά είναι μια απόλαυση, τόσο για τα μάτια όσο και για τον ουρανίσκο, και εδώ βρίσκει κανείς πάγκους με φρέσκα φρούτα, λαχανικά, κρέας, ψάρια και αλλαντικά, ελιές και πόσα άλλα. Και αν με τα ψώνια σάς βρει το μεσημέρι και σας ανοίξει η όρεξη, κάντε μια στάση στο συμπαθέστατο ουζερί «Του Μήτσου»

(Βλάλη 11), που σερβίρει νόστιμους μεζέδες σε ένα αυθεντικό και χαλαρό περιβάλλον με φιλική εξυπηρέτηση.

Κάτω από τα αστέρια

Μια συναυλία ή μια θεατρική παράσταση από το Κρατικό Θέατρο Βορείου Ελλάδος –αν δεν υπάρχει το εμπόδιο της γλώσσας– στο πλαίσιο του Φεστιβάλ του Δάσους θα συμπληρώσει ιδανικά την ημέρα σας. Οι εκδηλώσεις του πραγματοποιούνται στο Θέατρο Δάσους και στο Θέατρο Γης, αμφότερα σε ειδυλλιακές τοποθεσίες στα υψώματα γύρω από την πόλη.

Στη Μονή Λαζαριστών, έναν ιστορικό χώρο βορειοδυτικά του κέντρου, πραγματοποιούνται ελληνικές και διεθνείς μουσικές παραστάσεις στον φροντισμένο προαύλιο χώρο του.

Ένας μεγάλος περίπατος

Τα πέντε χιλιόμετρα του παραλιακού μετώπου, από το λιμάνι μέχρι το Μέγαρο Μουσικής, είναι ιδιαίτερα όμορφα το πρωί, όταν τα καΐκια γλιστρούν αθόρυβα πάνω σε μια θάλασσα-γυαλί, με τους ψαράδες να προσδοκούν μια καλή ψαριά. The Mother of Israel

Often referred to as “La Madre de Israel,” the city played a leading role in Jewish culture and community over many centuries; Thessaloniki’s Jewish heritage dates back to the city's founding in 315 BC. Although tangible remnants of this long history are now scarce, one can get a sense of it at sites such as the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki (11 Aghiou Mina), the Holocaust Memorial at Eleftherias Square and the Monastir Synagogue (35 Syngrou).

Port of culture

Once a collection of warehouses, the old port of the city has evolved into a vibrant cultural hub. Under the MOMus (Metropolitan Organization of Museums of Visual Arts, momus. gr) umbrella, it is now home to notable institutions including the Experimental Center for the Arts and the Museum of Photography. Furthermore, the port houses the Cinema

Museum (filmfestival.gr), an integral part of Thessaloniki’s International Film Festival. Apart from the engaging exhibitions and events held within these museums, the port area offers splendid vistas of the pre-war architectural facades along the seafront as well as breathtaking views of majestic Mt Olympus across the bay.

Beauty and faith

Thessaloniki’s dazzling Byzantine churches, among them 13 UNESCO World Heritage monuments, are still a vital part of everyday city life. Locals stop in for moments of contemplation or to light a candle, and you’re welcome, too. Among the most important houses of worship are the Church of Aghios Dimitrios, named in honor of the city’s patron saint; the Church of Aghia Sofia; and the Church of the Virgin Acheiropoietos.

Morning at the market

An early visit to Kapani Market is often how the day starts for local residents. This lively market is a treat for both the eyes and the palate, with stalls brimming with fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, and deli products. It’s worth staying for lunch, as at the center of the bustling market stands the charming Stou Mitsou ouzeri (11 Vlali). This friendly and welcoming eatery serves delightful dishes in a wonderful setting.

Under the stars

Take in a concert or, if the language barrier doesn’t bother you, a theatrical production from the National Theater of Northern Greece – in modern or ancient Greek – at the Summer Festival of the Forest, whose events are held at the Theater of the Forest and the Theater of the Earth, both located in bucolic settings on the heights above the city center.

At the Moni Lazariston, a historic space northwest of the downtown area, Greek and international musical performances are held.

A grand promenade

The five gorgeous kilometers of seafront stretching from the old port to the Concert Hall are particularly lovely in the morning, when rowers glide silently over the glassy sea and fishermen bait their hooks in anticipation of an early catch. At dusk, the whole promenade is alive with crowds of all ages; it’s the most inclusive outdoor space in the city. Rent a bike, go skateboarding, grab an ice cream, or stop for a photo at the “Umbrellas,” George Zongolopoulos’ whimsical sculpture that has become a city landmark.

«Μπακόλας» (Χρυσοστόμου Σμύρνης 20) ξεφουρνίζονται τα πρώτα καυτά κουλούρια, με ελκυστικό άρωμα που μυρίζει μέχρι έξω στον δρόμο – δοκιμάστε τα. Ένα φλιτζάνι γεμάτο τέχνη Ο καφές και η δημιουργικότητα πάνε χέρι χέρι σε αυτή την πόλη. Τα τελευταία χρόνια λειτουργούν εδώ αρκετά concept stores και πολυχώροι που σερβίρουν υπέροχα ροφήματα και πωλούν ντιζάιν αντικείμενα ή φιλοξενούν εκθέσεις καλλιτεχνών. Nuts, anyone?

Iraklis (59 Olympou) and Harilaos (24 Vatikiotou) are two family-owned nut shops still using traditional roasting techniques; they have been preparing some of Thessaloniki’s favorite snacks for two generations. Try a sack of kavourmas, crisp and airy toasted chickpeas, or some salted, freshroasted pasatempos – that’s slang for sunflower seeds, since eating them is a favorite “pastime” while doing something else, like strolling around Aristotelous Square, the Roman Agora or the waterfront.

Breakfast on the go

The koulouri is Thessaloniki’s signature morning snack. These satisfying bread rings coated in sesame seeds are sold by vendors near Aristotelous Square, the enchanting plaza complete with pigeons, in case you feel like sharing. You’ll also find some of the best koulouri, hot from the oven, at Bakolas Bakery (20 Chrysostomou Smyrnis). Arrive promptly at 7:30 to savor the very first batch of piping-hot koulouri of the day. It’s at this time that the aroma fills the air, tempting your senses and guaranteeing a truly memorable breakfast treat.

A cup of culture

Coffee and creativity go great together in sociable Thessaloniki. At the Beetroot coffee shop (8 Syngrou), you can see this award-winning design team’s latest inspirations while enjoying a flat white. In the same neighborhood, Ypsilon (5 Edessis), housed in a converted historic inn, is another destination for coffee, drinks and possibly an art show or a performance. Near the White Tower, the hangout Father Coffee & Vinyls (9 Stratigou Kallari) has a loyal following that raves about its specialty blends and the music on the turntables and on the shelves.

The street food capital

Although Thessaloniki is known for its outstanding food, the fact that you can find great flavors in the most casual of settings may come as a surprise. Nonetheless, the generous portions of perfectly seasoned gyros meat wrapped in a pita that you get in this city is the envy of the rest of Greece. One of the best is served at Diagonios (13 Stratigou Kallari). Another beloved treat is the mouthwatering bougatsa, a flaky pastry available in both sweet and savory variations. Giannis (106 Mitropoleos), conveniently located near the White Tower, is a cherished establishment that serves these delectable delights, even during the late hours of the night. Κλείστε θέση για ένα λάιβ στο «Ροσινιόλ» (Αθηνάς 21). Και μετά, όπως υπαγορεύει η παράδοση, κατευθυνθείτε στον «Τσαρούχα» (Ολύμπου 78) για ένα καταπραϋντικό πιάτο πατσά – δεν προτείνεται για τις καυτές νύχτες του καλοκαιριού. Στη διαδρομή αναζητήστε με το βλέμμα σας τα παιχνιδιάρικα δελφίνια στη θάλασσα, ενώ μόλις φτάσετε απολαύστε μια βουτιά στα δροσερά νερά, πριν καθίσετε σε μία από τις ταβέρνες με τα τραπέζια σχεδόν πάνω στην άμμο. Απολαύστε το ούζο σας με τηγανητά καλαμαράκια στον φημισμένο «Γιάννη» στην προκυμαία (πλατεία Κουντουριώτου), προτού πάρετε το τε- λευταίο καραβάκι της επιστροφής – συνήθως γύρω στις 18.00, αλλά τα δρομολόγια πυκνώνουν τους καλοκαιρινούς μήνες.

Urban Greek blues

Rebetiko belongs to the rich cultural heritage of the Greekspeaking refugees who arrived from Asia Minor in the 1920s. This popular musical genre is key to the city’s soul and the cornerstone to its famously engaging nightlife. Find out what the attraction is by dropping in on a live performance at Rosiniol (21 Athinas). Tradition dictates that attendees follow up the show with a bowl of patsas, or tripeand-trotter soup, at Tsarouchas (78 Olympou). However, note that both these establishments may be closed for the better part of August.

Keep an eye out for frolicking dolphins on a boat trip from the pier or White Tower across the Thermaic Gulf to beach suburbs such as the resort town of Peraia. After a dip, try one of the tavernas with tables right on the sand, such as the noted eatery Giannis (Plateia Kountouriotou), on the waterfront, for a little ouzo and fried calamari before catching the last boat back (usually around 18:00, but make sure to check).
