The infrastructure sector is enjoys intense focus from Government for initiating policies that would ensure time-bound creation of top class infrastructure in the country. Infrastructure sector includes power, bridges, dams, roads, and urban infrastructure development. Road construction activities have remained strong even in the pandemic period, and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) alone successfully completed construction of 3,951 km of roads during April-September 2020. It has achieved the construction of 21.6 km per day even during the pandemic and aims to construct a total of 11,000 km of roads in the financial year ending March 2021. The construction equipment industry is likely to grow by 15-20 per cent in the calendar year 2021 but stressed that the economy, in the grip of a pandemic, could throw up sudden negative surprises. According to ICRA, The first quarter of 2021 is estimated to have reported a strong equipment demand growth of 45-50 per cent, Following a 10-12 per cent contraction in CY2020, dragged down primarily by the 39 per cent decline in H1 CY2020, the mining and construction equipment (MCE) industry is poised to grow by 15-20 per cent in CY2021 (5-10% in FY2022). Apart from infrastructure, industrial development such as the construction of new factories and the expansion of capacity in steel, power, cement, fertilizers, oil refineries and other sectors will have a positive impact on the growth of construction equipment. With this issue of Construction Mirror, our team has compiled some industry related articles which includes Scaffolding & Formwork, Architectural Lighting, Telehandlers, etc. Apart from all this our editors have arranged interview of some industry leaders much more vital information of the construction world classifies under different heads. Press Release

Jindal Stainless Limited gets a major credit re-rating

Press release

CRISIL Ratings assigns ‘CRISIL A+/Stable’ to long-term credit facilities of JSL In a first-ever development, CRISIL Ratings has assigned ‘CRISIL A+/Stable’ rating to the long-term credit facilities of Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL). Short-term credit facilities of JSL have been rated ‘CRISIL A1’. Earlier, in January this year, JSL was accorded ratings of ‘IND BBB+’ and ‘CARE BBB+’ by India Ratings and Research and CARE Ratings respectively for the long-term debt facilities. The present rating is three notches higher than the earlier ratings. Among the major determinants acknowledged by CRISIL for the ratings is the superior market position with a sizeable quantum of exports and significant improvements in overall operating efficiency ensuring stable profitability. CRISIL has also taken into account a significant improvement of financial risk profile with consistent debt reduction over the past few years. The ratings also endorse efficient working capital management by the Company. Commenting on this development, Managing Director, JSL, Mr Abhyuday Jindal said, “This rating is a testament to a strong business model at JSL and the inherent strengths of the group to continue delivering strong business performance. It acknowledges considerable deleveraging, as we have reduced the debt by around 35%, and we intend to maintain our focus on robust balance sheet management. In this hour of need, we are also proud to contribute towards Atmanirbhar Bharat not only through manufacturing, but also by ramping up oxygen supplies to various parts of the country.” The rating also factored in a healthy business profile of the Jindal Stainless group, which is the market leader in the domestic stainless steel industry in India. Furthermore, CRISIL has taken note of the strong consolidated business entity that will emerge after the merger of the JSL & Jindal Stainless (Hisar) Limited, which is currently under process. This merged entity will have a large scale of operation with a high market share along with a diversified product basket. Excerpts from the reports:

Superior market position coupled with a sizeable export presence:

“The group through its manufacturing plants in Hisar, Haryana (JSHL plant with capacity of 0.8 mtpa) and Jajpur, Odisha, (JSL plant with 1.1 mtpa), is the largest manufacturer of SS flat products in

12

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

India. Capabilities to manufacture a wide variety of grades across all series of SS (mainly 200, 300 and 400 series – classified based on exact content of nickel and other alloys) has helped the group cater to a diversified end-user base, comprising automobile-railway-transportation (ART), architecture-building-construction (ABC), process industries (food and pharma), consumer goods (durables, kitchenware), and healthcare (equipment)… Both the plants together export nearly 16% of overall production (during first nine months of fiscal 2021 [9MFY21]). Its major export markets include, Europe, South East Asia, and Middle East.

Improvement in operating efficiencies:

While profitability is largely dependent on price of inputs (mainly nickel and chrome ore) and the product mix (200, 300, 400 series), the group has taken several measures that has led to improvement in its operating performance. In JSL’s plant it has installed a railway siding to transport raw material and finished goods leading to savings on logistics costs and substituted high cost propane with cheaper coke oven gas. Furthermore, the JSL plant is located in Odisha, which has 93% of India’s chromite ore reserves (apart from nickel, chrome is key input in making SS) and is supported by a captive power plant of 264 megawatts (MW) which covers bulk of its electricity requirement. These initiatives coupled with stable demand indicators led to significant improvement in capacity utilisation with production rising from 0.45 mt in fiscal 2015 to 0.97 mt in fiscal 2020… CRISIL Ratings expects group to maintain its strong market position, diversified product segments and ability to manage fluctuations in raw material prices.

Significant improvement in financial risk profile over the past few fiscals supported by debt reduction:

Higher utilisation levels, coupled with healthy realisations led to significant rise in operating profitability for JSL, with EBTIDA/tonne (consolidated) increasing to Rs 15,481 during 9MFY21 rising from Rs 13,661 in fiscal 2019. Consequently, JSL has been able to substantially reduce consolidated external debt levels to Rs 2,124 crore as on December 31, 2020, from Rs. 3,488 crore as on March 31, 2019. JSHL too has pared its consolidated debt to Rs 2,009 crore from Rs 2,367 crore, over the same period. CRISIL Ratings understand that the group continued to || www.constructionmirror.com ||

reduce debt in the last quarter of fiscal 2021, resulting in repayment of nearly Rs 1,700 crore of debt in fiscal 2021 (which included prepayment of around Rs 1,100 crore which represents bulk of their scheduled term debt obligations over the next two fiscals) between the two companies, underpinning the strong focus of the management towards debt reduction. With further debt reduction in the last quarter of fiscal 2021 and scheduled repayments in fiscal 2022, CRISIL Ratings expects the interest coverage to improve to over 5 times and net debt/EBITDA to be less than 1.5 times, at the group level for

fiscal 2022. Prudent working capital management: Further, with improving scale the group saw better bargaining power with suppliers and customers. Receivables for both entities have been below 30 days over the last three fiscals, while payables ranged between 75-90 days. The group has taken several steps to minimise inventory levels, especially that of nickel (which is the costliest input material) through regular monitoring, in order to minimise any impact of price volatility. It also maintains a healthy order book to better manage pricing risk.” CM

The Board of Directors of Jindal Stainless Limited (JSL) today approved the financial results of the Company for Q4FY21. A strong recovery in the domestic stainless steel demand continued in the January-March period and helped sales volume grow by 15% over the corresponding period last year (CPLY) to 255,099 tonnes in Q4FY21. JSL’s EBITDA and profit after tax (PAT) stood at INR 521 crores and 265 crores respectively. During the Q4FY21 the interest cost reduced by 36% over CPLY to INR 92 crores. The fourth-quarter demand was buoyed by segments like Auto, and a healthy revival in demand from the Pipe & Tube segment, along with Railways & allied infrastructure, including the Metro segment. The demand for special grades in Q4FY21 registered growth due to localisation efforts by the government and Company’s initiatives for innovation. With further push on || www.constructionmirror.com ||

indigenous production and expected economic recovery, healthy demand is likely to be generated in the future as well. Demand from segments like Elevators and Lifts, and Hollowware also remained strong and is likely to continue. On the global scale, stainless steel production was impacted by the onset of the pandemic, and stood at 50.90 million tonne in CY2020, registering a decline of 2.5% over CPLY. Stainless steel melt production in India for CY2020 was at 3.17 million tonnes, registering a decline of 19% over CPLY. Q4FY21 also witnessed further increase in raw material prices globally, wherein Scrap, Nickel, Copper and Ferro Chrome etc rose significantly over the Q3FY21 prices. The rally in raw material prices eventually pushed up prices of finished goods globally. This phenomenon was also visible for other commodities, including metal, due to pent up demand and economic recovery. The Company maintained its focus on meeting domestic demand, which led to an increase in || June 2021 ||

ABB Robotics advances construction industry automation to enable safer and sustainable building

Press Release

9 out of 10 construction businesses predict a skills crisis by 2030, with 81 percent saying they will introduce robots in the next 10 years, while safety and the environment both catalysts for accelerating investment in robotics

22

ABB Robotics is driving automation in the construction industry with new robotic automation solutions to address key challenges, including the need for more affordable and environmentally friendly housing and to reduce the environmental impact of construction, amidst a labor and skills shortage. Robotic automation offers huge potential to enhance productivity, efficiency and manufacturing flexibility throughout the construction industry, including automating the fabrication of modular homes and building components off-site, robotic welding and material handling on building sites and robot 3D printing of houses and customized structures. As well as making the industry safer and more cost effective, robots are improving sustainability and reducing environmental impact by enhancing quality and cutting waste. “With so few construction businesses using automation today, there’s huge potential for us to transform the industry through robotics. Unlike building cars or assembling electronics, many techniques used in construction haven’t changed for generations, so we are developing new solutions to address key industry challenges,” said Sami Atiya, President of ABB’s Robotics & Discrete Automation Business Area. “This new customer segment will broaden our portfolio as part of a wider strategy to accelerate expansion in high-growth segments including electronics, healthcare, consumer goods, logistics and food and beverage, to meet the growing demand for automation across multiple industries.” In a global survey1 commissioned by ABB of 1900 large and small construction businesses in Europe, the US and China, 91 percent said they face a skills crisis over the next 10 years, with 44 percent saying they struggle to recruit for construction jobs. Improving health and safety on building sites was a priority for 42 percent and the same percentage said the environment is a key driver for industry change. 81 percent of construction businesses said they will introduce or increase the use of robotics and

automation in the next decade, while today only a handful of businesses benefit from robotics. In the survey, only 55 percent of construction companies say they use robots, compared with 84 percent in Automotive and 79 percent in Manufacturing. Industry forecasts for the total value of the global construction industry predict it will rise by 85 percent to $15.5 trillion worldwide by 20302, while ABB Robotics’ internal analysis of the market potential for robotic automation over the next 10 years is for high double digit growth rate in key sectors of construction including pre-fabrication and 3D printing.

Robots enabling a new approach

With the industry facing increased environmental regulation and the need for more cost-effective buildings, robotic automation reduces waste by improving quality and consistency, which is significant when it’s estimated that up to a quarter of material transported to a building site leaves as waste3. With automation and digital solutions, builders can also design waste out at the beginning of a project through effective building design and construction processes. With more than 200,000 vacancies for low and high-skilled workers in the EU alone in Q2 20204, the industry labor shortage is a growing issue, with younger people put off construction careers by perceptions that it is a dangerous occupation. Construction workers account for around 30 percent of workplace injuries and are up to four times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident vs. other sectors, with an estimated 108,000 fatalities every year worldwide5. Robots can make construction safer by handling large and heavy loads, working in unsafe spaces and enabling new, safer methods of construction. Using robots for the repetitive and dangerous tasks that people increasingly don’t want to do means automation can help support the industry’s labor and skills crisis and make construction careers more appealing to young people. “A new focus on health, safety and sustainability || www.constructionmirror.com ||

are catalysts for investment in robotics, while the shrinking pool of skilled labor means the construction industry needs robots to help keep pace with the challenges of urbanization and climate change,” added Atiya. “We are putting our expertise and industry-leading portfolio of robots and digital tools at the center of the construction industry value chain with automation solutions for faster, more affordable and sustainable construction, while supporting the industry’s labor shortage, by handling large and heavy loads, accessing dangerous spaces and enabling new, safer ways of building.”

NHAI add another 1,470 kms of National Highway in April & May

National highway construction continues to grow at rapid rate in India, even during the lockdown due to the pandemic. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), India has managed to add another 1,470 kms of national highways in the last two months. According to the MoRTH, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has increased national highway construction by a massive 73.5 per cent as compared to the same period last year. During both these phases, several parts in India faced lockdown restrictions due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. Sharing the developments, the ministry said that NHAI constructed 847 kms of national highways between April and May this year, while another 663 kms of national highway projects were || www.constructionmirror.com ||

awarded by the end of last month. In the 2020-21 financial year, the NHAI managed to add around 4,350 kilometres of highway projects. It is also ramping up the pipeline of highway projects to be awarded in the first quarter of FY2021-2022. The authority is expected to bid out highway projects worth around `50,000 crore in the first quarter of the next financial year, claims a report. India has seen one of the fastest growing network of national highways under union minister Nitin Gadkari. Earlier this year, the National Highways Authority of India completed development of a 25.54 km single lane stretch of road in just 18 hours, creating a world record. The stretch that made it to the record books is situated on the four-lane highway between Vijaypur and Solapur on the NH-52. CM || June 2021 ||

Designed to improve flexibility, productivity and quality, pilot projects include the automated fabrication of timber roof supports with Autovol in Canada, the robotic installation of elevators with Schindler Lifts and the robotic automation of Intelligent City’s production of prefabricated modular homes, which has increased production efficiency by 15 percent and speed by 38 percent, while reducing waste by 30 percent. Skanska’s robot welding application has improved quality, employee productivity and safety by automating the fabrication of steel reinforcement baskets on-site. This solution has also reduced the cost and environmental impact of transporting bulky finished reinforcement baskets to building sites.

“It is increasingly challenging to find people to carry out difficult, time-consuming tasks, which means we must look further afield to find the workers we need,” said Ulf Håkansson, Technical Director for Skanska Construction. “Allocating these tasks to robots can address this, enabling us to deploy our workers more effectively. Automation also suits the experience and imagination of the next generation of engineers, who have grown up with technology and will be invaluable in helping us find new ways to use robots in our business.” ABB is also working with several leading universities to co-develop new automated construction technologies including ETH Zurich, a leading research university in Switzerland. At ETH, ABB is supporting research in the field of robotics fabrication in architecture and construction and has helped establish the world’s first laboratory for collaborative robotic digital fabrication in architecture, hosted at the ETH’s Institute of Technology in Architecture. This week, the latest large scale ABB robotics 3D printing technology for the construction industry is being showcased by the Austrian architectural bureau MAEID at the 17th International Architecture - La Biennale di Venezia, to inspire architects about the possibilities of automation and 3D printing, driving innovation and enabling new ways of building. (Projection in ISSF conference)

Commenting on this development, President, ISSDA, Mr KK Pahuja said, “The ISSF Conference brought out far-reaching changes that are underway in the global stainless steel industry. On one hand, stainless steel capacity of 5.5 MT is ready in Indonesia. On the other hand, the Chinese government has withdrawn export tax rebate in May 2021, which will restrict the export of stainless steel from China. As a result, exports from China may come down, while exports from the same Chinese companies in Indonesia will rise significantly. This has serious implications for India as we estimate that import intensity from Indonesia will nearly double, as trade remedial measures like Countervailing Duty has been withdrawn since the announcement in the Union Budget.” Chinese companies have been setting up large capacities in Indonesia, exploiting multiple benefits like raw material proximity and local incentives. Since the capacity of over 5.5 MT set up in Indonesia is nearly 25 times the local demand of about 0.2 MT, it is evident that the production is entirely targeted at export || www.constructionmirror.com ||

markets. The production in Indonesia has been stable at about 2.2-2.4 MT during the last three years, even as capacity enhancement was in progress. Globally, China is the largest stainless steel producer in the world with a production of about 30 MT, which is about 60% of the global production in CY 2020. While the global stainless steel production declined by 2.5% in CY 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic, Chinese production rose by 2.5%, further cementing its dominant position. Indian stainless steel market is the secondfastest-growing market after China and has been a victim of large-scale dumping of stainless steel flat products. In the pre-COVID period of 2019-20, as much as 24% of the market was captured by imports, half of which came from Indonesia. Indonesian stainless steel firms have, therefore, been facing trade actions for dumping and non-WTO compliant subsidies from across the globe, including China. With the beleaguered domestic stainless steel industry already operating at 60% of its capacity, and importing countries building irresponsible capacities, ISSDA estimates that the situation for the domestic industry, already reeling under the impact of COVID’s second wave, could soon spin out of control. ISSDA represented India and showcased major developments in the Indian stainless steel industry during the ISSF Annual conference, held during May 17-27. ISSF, a division of World Steel Association, held its annual conference ISSF25 virtually for the second consecutive year due to persistent COVID19 pandemic situation. This conference brings together the global stainless steel industry on a common platform to discuss industry issues and ways to promote stainless steel. This year, many important sessions on Sustainability, Life Cycle Cost, Safety & Health, Raw Materials, Production, and Market Trends were presented and discussed. CM || June 2021 ||

Maccaferri Successfully Completes Landslide Mitigation works in the hilly terrains of Lambagarh, Uttarakhand

Press Release

Making hill roads safer with sustainable civil engineering solutions

26

Maccaferri in India recently announced the completion of one of its biggest landslide mitigation projects in Lambagarh, Uttarakhand located on NH – 58, the road leading to the holy shrine of Badrinath temple. Extreme weather events are on the rise in the Himalayan regions with heavy loss and damage occurring to both human life and infrastructure. These areas are highly prone to landslides and rockfalls owing to both natural and man-made factors. Landslides have been common since the 1980s and are known to disrupts the traffic during the monsoon season, holding up devotees for days together at either end of the landslide. To address this problem the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways designed a solution to counteract the destabilizing forces in the restricted space and thus improve the safety and quality of the road. As part of this solution implementation, Maccaferri won the national competitive bid to construct a reinforced soil wall (maximum height of 44 meters) with gabions as a facia (Terramesh® system) and high strength geogrid (ParaLink®) for reinforcement across a stretch of 500 meters. Further, to protect

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

the road from the direct impact of falling debris and rocks, a rockfall embankment of 320 meters length and 10 meters height was constructed using Terramesh® and ParaLink® reinforcement at the hillside toe. A flexible pavement has been constructed as part of the same project. Maccaferri is the inventor of gabions, and these are widely used in civil engineering construction especially in highways, railways, mining, and hilly terrains. Gabions are cages which are engineered from double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire mesh. These are assembled and filled with stones at the project site. Terramesh® units are made of gabion facia along with an integrated tail as soil reinforcement. ParaLink® geogrids are planar structures consisting of a monoaxial array of composite geosynthetics strips and are used for soil reinforcement applications, including reinforced soils walls and basal reinforcement solutions. These products are locally manufactured as over the past two decades, Maccaferri has invested in world class state of the art manufacturing facilities and has successfully established its manufacturing footprint across India with production units in Ranjangaon (Maharashtra), Shirur (Maharshtra) and Una (Himachal Pradesh). During the project construction, there were two key challenges that were faced but efficiently managed by Maccaferri. The first one pertained to the limited construction working period of 5 months in a year due to the monsoon, snowfall and pilgrim’s rush putting a halt to any project activities in the remaining months. The second key challenge was to keep the existing narrow road open and to ensure a smooth and safe flow of traffic during the project construction. Mr. Vikramjiet Roy, the Managing Director of Maccaferri in India and the Regional CEO of the ISEAP (India, South-East Asia & Pacific) Region at the Officine Maccaferri Group said, “We understand the dynamism of the Indian infrastructure industry and are moving to offer better and more cost-effective solutions and technology that dwell with the Indian landscape. To meet the challenges of the future, we have a very strong asset to rely on: 140 years of documented history. Maccaferri solutions provide environmental, social and economic benefits mitigating natural and anthropogenic hazards, respecting the environment, enhancing people safety and improving their lives. For the construction of the reinforced soil wall in Lambagarh, the stones and backfill material were locally sourced hence making the solution economical with a low carbon footprint. Our core purpose is to be the Sherpa on the imagination-to-implementation journey to make || www.constructionmirror.com ||

our nation a leader in sustainable infrastructure solutions with the objective of building an India with world-class infrastructure that leads the world into a sustainable and safer future”. Even though for this project Maccaferri implemented the solutions as provided by the client, however, for many other projects across India the company proceed through all the stages of development; manufacturing, designing, and installing solutions. As part of their service, technical assistance is provided to partners for installation of Maccaferri’s advanced solutions. For complex and strategic projects that are not common in the industry, they have a specialized construction company (Maccaferri Infrastructure Private Limited) to take up such turnkey projects in India. Over the years, Maccaferri has worked successfully on over 1200 projects across India with various well-known private and public entities, most of which have been successfully completed in record

time and these living structures with their ecological value enhancement are its best credentials. CM

Scaffold: Types and Precautions Against Particular Hazards

Scaffold, in building construction, temporary platform used to elevate and support workers and materials during the construction, repair, or cleaning of a structure or machine, it consists of one or more planks of convenient size and length, with various methods of support, depending on the form and use. Scaffolds are common structures on many jobsites, and the hazards of working on them are as prevalent today as they were 20 years ago.

Scaffolding is a temporary structure whose configuration and location change as the construction progresses. As scaffolding is used and shared by multiple trades, its interaction with different construction activities often entails challenges and issues that emerge only after construction commences. Managing scaffolding in industrial construction is more challenging due to project complexity and size. Types of Scaffolding in Construction The scaffolding process is an essential component of the construction sites, as many workers around the world, rely upon that, and produce substantial results for the construction companies. The scaffold has revolutionized the construction business, workers on the construction site achieved their purposes easily, and this structure makes an easy life for workers as they can take the support for carrying out the loads from building materials. this purpose, there are many scaffolding types, depending upon the geographical location and the financial position of specified countries, as in some countries the aluminum is expensive, or in some, the timber. The main reason that these types are available in the market is the choices of architectures and designers made for the regulatory and implication of the projects. These are the following types: Supported Scaffolding: The quality standards set requires safety measures and guidelines that need to be followed during the construction process. Supported Scaffolding is built from the ground that accurately supports the structure, using metal tubes and couplers that are mainly used as compared to bamboo structures that mainly available in Asian Countries. The supported scaffold has revolutionized the construction business, workers on the construction site achieved their purposes easily, and this structure makes an easy life for workers as they can take the support for carrying out the loads from building materials. Supported Scaffolding ensures the safety of the workers. The platforms supported by the trigger, beams, poles, and frames minimize the risk of scaffolding injuries. Its working platform is planked to the guardrails, and Planks are over layered on the support. Supported scaffolding ensures the options of flexibility in assembling and dissembling, while during the assembling, an extra level can be added on reaching each floor; that works opposite in the dissembling process. This type of scaffolding has a more vital benefit as compare to other types of scaffolding, pre-engineering components consist of the vertical and horizontal parts joint together in a systematic way. Suspended Scaffolding: The platform in this type of scaffold is suspended by a cable wire that allows the platform to maintain its height to any extent. Suspended scaffolding usage is required for any two-story or 10 story buildings. This scaffold usually helped window cleaners to work easily and safely on skyscrapers. Suspended scaffold ensures safety with its feature of ‘’Secure Anchorage’’. A suspended scaffold is designed in a way that can be raised and lowered during the task occupied by workers or materials. Its weight is highly supported by its structure that attaches to each of the scaffold components.

Scaffold are functional to the fall arrest system and its security and safety is ensured by its anchorage. Proprietary links should be fixed with anchors approved by the producer of the tie, which should take account of the loading details. These will be attached with internal eye diameters of 20-24 mm to the eye style fixings. Flexibility of the suspended scaffold can be extended from 3 to 72 feet, even more, depending upon the features. Its four sides are attached by the rope, however, to create more safe space and high risk on skyscrapers, the sides usually attach along with steel chains. Mobile Scaffolding: Mobile scaffolds are used for large construction sites, where multiple projects are taking place, their mobility and multifunction feature help workers to change position easily as they set on wheel and carters. Mobile scaffold’s usage is mainly on working sites for plastering and painting purposes, the workers to ensure the lock of Casters and wheels during the work, in case of any incident. This scaffold can contain as much heavy load and structures as possible. Made upon the Galvanized steel, this structure establishes several standards for the construction. When it comes to the initial outlay, mobile scaffolding towers are far more cost-efficient. A higher structure will find that the initial cost of purchasing a mobile scaffold is much lower than the purchase of a full scaffold system. The structure is usually made up of an aluminum body while the height can be extended to a maximum of 12 meters. Its structure is easy to assemble and disassemble and doesn’t remove before moving. Unlike other scaffolds, the mobile scaffold does not need extensive manpower. Wooden & Bamboo Scaffolding: Although you can use wooden scaffolding almost anywhere (there are regulations for how to build it), it’s more common outside of North America and Europe. Pre-cut lumber was the most common type of scaffolding until steel, and the fabrication of materials, became much more affordable. Bamboo is more commonly used in Asia where it’s favored for strength, flexibility, and eco-friendliness. The most well-known city that uses bamboo scaffolding to build everything from opera houses to skyscrapers. Highly-skilled designers and technicians are responsible for constructing and maneuvering through multiple stories of bamboo. || www.constructionmirror.com ||

Tube & Coupler Scaffolding: This is one of the earliest types of steel scaffolding and consists of two parts, including the tubes and clips, sometimes called ‘couples.’ The idea is really simple, and one reason why it’s so popular is because of the ease in assembly and disassembly. To erect the scaffold, you need to connect tubes together to make long runs and then connect the verticals and horizontals together with clamps built specifically for these tubes. This system is very flexible as you can place the verticals wherever you need them. Where other types of scaffolding don’t easily form to odd shapes, tube and clamp scaffolding can be adapted to round, straight, or irregular buildings. The steel in this type of scaffolding is specially designed to protect against rust and corrosion, meaning it’s a good choice for regions with harsh weather. Systems Scaffolding: Sometimes referred to as modular scaffolding, systems scaffolding consists primarily of vertical and horizontal pre-engineered components that connect together in a systematic fashion. Systems scaffolding is likely the most used type of scaffolding across the globe and there are hundreds of manufacturers, each having specific efficiencies. Some perform well in very highly loaded conditions and others are more suited to smaller repeated scaffold structures.

Systems scaffolding is an umbrella term that includes many different types of scaffolding that can be used to create standardized scaffolding bays. Frame & Brace Scaffolding: Very common for residential and commercial applications in North America and Europe, this type of modularized scaffolding consists of frames, braces, planks, and bases. This scaffold is very light and can be erected very quickly. It’s important to note that this type of scaffolding isn’t as strong as system scaffolding. Suspended or Swing Set Scaffolding: Although some scaffolders don’t classify this structure as scaffolding, since it isn’t built from the ground, we consider suspended or swing set scaffolding as scaffolding. Afterall, it’s main purpose is to support scaffolders and their supplies. This type of scaffolding consists of a platform that is suspended by a cable system that allows the platform to climb up and down to various heights. Suspended scaffolds can provide significant savings on very tall structures that need light duty access, like ongoing building maintenance and small improvements.

Scaffolding Safety

Fall accidents have been a serious issue especially in construction industry. Moreover, it is the basic cause of accidents resulting in serious injury and death. However, fall incidents are preventable || www.constructionmirror.com ||

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

Specific duties of each party to the scaffolding process may include the following. (a) Property developers, project management consultants, owners, and persons who control the workplace need to ensure that: • Adequately qualified contractors and consultants are employed on the project. • Sufficient monies are available to fund the works and the temporary works so that provisions can be made to protect employers, employees and others against the various hazards that may arise. (b) Main contractors, project management consultants or sub-contractors who engage others or contract for the erection of a scaffold need to: • Plan the work to be carried out from the scaffold and to specify any special requirements for the scaffold, e.g. any loads the scaffold maybe expected to carry. • Co-ordinate the erection, use and dismantling of the scaffold. • Ensure the safety of others who may be in the vicinity of the scaffold, including members of the public. • For public protection including gantries, screening. This may include co-ordination with local authorities and obtaining permits as necessary. • Provide information about the foundation conditions for the scaffold, including information about the strength of verandahs and suspended slabs upon which the scaffold is to be erected. • Provide information about the proximity of power lines and protective methods. • Clearly communicate via specifications, drawings, or other informations, the scope and all requirements for the scaffold required, to the scaffolding erector. • Co-ordinate/delegate all subsequent inspections and alterations needed to ensure the safety of the scaffold and those using the scaffold. • Ensure protection of the scaffold from construction vehicles or other vehicles in the vicinity, including co-ordination of crane activities over the scaffold. provided basic scaffolding inspection is conducted before start of work. Users need to understand the risks of working at elevated platforms and the way to construct. This is the reason, the emphasis is highly on providing basic scaffolding training to the employees. Collapse of scaffold is the common cause in most of the incidents and it happens due to overloading, improper assembly or use of faulty parts. In addition, incidents of hazards we come across like falls from elevation, stuck by falling tools or debris, electrocution, bad plank, etc. Actually, scaffolds are engineered products and its proper design ensures supporting a specified load. Any technical negligence would eventually leads to fall incidents. Therefore, scaffolding safety is the need of hour and for which employees must be competent to identify existing hazards as well as predicted hazards through inspection. Employers in height work industries have to ensure safe and efficient work platform so as to minimize the accident casualties. This is feasible by imparting basic scaffolding training to employees. When it comes to scaffolding training, NIST has curved a niche in the market with some prestigious clients to its credit. Trainers of this organization have been the asset over the years, as they know how to delve into the subject like proper selection, erection, and maintenance of scaffold components. As a result, employees would be technically trained to perform all the scaffolding activities with due precautions. All those involved in the construction work have responsibilities for the scaffolding process, and for the protection of those who use the scaffold in the course of their work. While the actual scaffolding process can vary from project to project, it is up to those involved to clarify the various responsibilities. The following may provide some assistance in the clarification of roles. Property developers, main contractors, project management consultants, and subcontractors who plan or order a scaffold erected have responsibilities as principals and as employers with respect to the scaffold. Scaffolding contractors who erect the scaffold, and contractors and subcontractors who use the scaffold, have responsibilities as employers. Employees of all the above have responsibilities as employees.

Proper Selection & Preventive Maintenance of OTR Tyres R

|| June 2021 ||

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

When it comes to off-the-road (OTR) tyres, fleet managers need to make sure they get the most out of their investment. That means implementing a maintenance plan to ensure earthmover tyres stay in good working condition for the long-term. Many leading tyre manufacturers produce high-quality OTR tyres suitable for all your industryspecific applications. Each manufacturer offers specific information about your tyres’ preferred rotation schedule, air pressure, and tread depth to help you create the right maintenance plan for your fleet. Earthmover tyres are also eligible for retreading when approved through the initial inspection process, further strengthening the return on your investment. There are numerous factors that should be considered when select-ing tyres for a heavy machine. Assessing the site's 'foot-print' tops the list; before you select a specific tyre, you should have a thorough understanding of the equipment on-site activities. At the same time, you should track the distance the equipment travels, its speed and the load it is carrying.

Importance of Effective Tyre Maintenance

44

Proper tyre care is a very important part of improving a company’s bottom line. A tyre maintenance program can lead to huge savings in the long run. Tyres are the third largest operating cost for heavy equipment, so it is essential to take care of them properly. Downtime costs time and money, so it’s just as important for a small contractor, as well as a large fleet company, to maximize the operating costs of their equipment. Even more significant than the cost savings of a good tyre maintenance program is that well-maintained tyres are much safer, especially in places like mines, quarries and construction sites. Tracking tyres’ performance is very important in tyre maintenance. There are many ways to record the performance of your tyres. Some companies track by recording the mounting hours on and off and calculating the cost per hour. Others track the same with mileage on and off and calculate the cost-per-mile run, while some track the total tons of material moved or cost per ton. It is important to keep track of the environmental conditions the tyres are being used in and which brands are performing the longest and most efficiently. Tracking unexpected failures can help shed light on tyre issues, poor maintenance, poor haul roads, weather conditions, and, ultimately,

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

provides answers to eliminate premature failures. Tyre vendors are able to provide monitoring services for some of their larger fleets. Tyre pressure monitoring systems use tracking software programs that create reports and calculations in real-time on air pressure and tyre temperature fluctuations, or changes that send out alerts to dealers and end-users when immediate action needs to be taken. Smaller companies and fleets should rely on their servicing tyre dealers for guidance on the proper tyre choice, tyre care and tyre tracking.

The Keys to Effective Earthmover Tyre Maintenance

Like all truck tyres, earthmover tyres require routine maintenance in order to catch repair needs early and keep drivers and vehicles safe during operation. Fleet managers should require their staff to conduct routine inspections to ensure their OTR tyres meet the standards of safety and reliability required for their specific applications. The following characteristics should be routinely inspected to ensure top working condition across all your earthmover tyres: • Inspections: In these environments, constant stop-start actions on the equipment lead to increased wheel-end temperatures and loose wheel-end components. Consider utilizing lug nut indicators to signify when components are loosening, which will reduce the risk of a dangerous wheel-off in demanding

environments. Also, be sure to check the tread and sidewalls of your tyres for any cracks, punctures, or severe wear. These examinations should be done daily to prevent dangerous blowouts. A few extra minutes of inspection can lead to many dollars saved and accidents prevented. • R otation: Tyres need to be rotated to prevent uneven wear and tear and extend their lifespan. Rotation schedules will vary depending on your site-specific conditions, and fleet managers can consult with their preventative maintenance providers to get the best recommendation for their specific rotation schedule. • Air Pressure: Failure to maintain proper air pressure can reduce your OTR tyres’ lifespan by 5% or more, resulting in premature blowout and unnecessary downtime. Checking for correct tyre pressure is also a tyre maintenance daily best practice, following these guidelines: • Fleets should have a master gauge on site to calibrate all other air gauges to ensure accuracy.

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

• All drivers should have a tyre pressure gauge to inspect the tyres for signs of irregular wear and tear. • Be sure that the valve caps are secure and that the tyre pressures are precise for the load the vehicle is designed to carry. • Look for signs of irregular wear and tear. Cutting and chunking will cause tyre failure. Deep cracks will allow debris penetration. • Wheels, cracked studs, missing or loose bolts should also be examined for damage. • Lug nuts should be tightened to the correct specifications and no dirt or debris should be left on the rims and weights. • M atching Duals: Making sure your duals match is essential for ensuring your OTR tyres do not experience uneven wear and tear. Mismatched duals can result in slipping, scrubbing, and overheating in the tyre, and can even stress your equipment’s mechanical systems. • P revention: While OTR tyres are built to withstand extreme environments, they are also tested by terrain, debris, and excessive temperatures. Should a puncture occur, || www.constructionmirror.com ||

proactively avoid a blowout or excessive air loss by outfitting tyres with sealant within the tyres. Sealant will remain within the tyres and continuously prevent air loss, condition the tyres, and seal punctures. • M aking Repairs at the Worksite: Delaying needed repairs can lead to additional damage. Many tyre manufaccturers and third party service providers provide onsite emergency earthmover tyre service utilizing the high tensile strength repair system.

comes to smart resource and logistics decisions— especially within the OTR, construction and equipment rental sectors. Transportation is a key aspect of project management that warrants careful purchasing and buying protocols, along with advanced research. Selecting the right tyres for the heavy commercial/ industrial equipment that keeps any construction site humming is essential. The proper functioning of “big machines” in particular is integral to jobsite success. Their continued productivity keeps projects on track, a tight workflow underway and budget managers “out of the red.” The strong, around-the-clock functionality of these core vehicles—which busy construction site operations depend on—seems to “ride upon” good tyre choice in more ways than one. There are three primary industrial-grade tyre technologies available on the market today: pneumatics, solid apertures and tyre (or “foam”) fill. Air-filled pneumatic tyres offer a smooth, non-jarring and quality ride, but they can be challenging and risky (in terms of tyre flat prevention) for a busy construction site. Typical work area debris—such as nails, sharp rocks, glass and rebar—can play havoc on any operator’s schedule and budget, as one wrong turn can quickly cause an unwanted tyre puncture and literally deflate project expectations. Solid tyres, on the other hand, offer a road-worthy, sturdy constitution and have the positive upside of preventing tyre flats. They can, however, be expensive, and, at times, overly heavy and cumbersome to maneuver, especially on an incline. Additionally, riding on solid tyres (which

Tyre Selection

Tyre selection is one of the most important line items on any Off-the-Road (OTR) equipment operator’s financial spreadsheet. Price matters, especially in today’s cost-conscious budget expenditure climate, but so does quality, performance and worker safety. All of these factors are important to successful operations. Managing an effective bottom line was hard enough prior to 2020, but now, in light of the current COVID-19 environment, it’s absolutely critical that jobsite and safety managers become increasingly savvy when it || www.constructionmirror.com ||

can generate more cross-axle G-force vibration) seven to eight hours a day behind the wheel can fatigue operators who take on excessive bumping and jolting over rugged terrain. Flatproofed tyres withstand a debris-cluttered worksite—gliding over foreboding objects that could otherwise stall an essential piece of equipment. As such, this technology can help reduce operator losses and defray potential manpower and productivity downtime that would occur if vehicles such as bulldozers, excavators and telehandlers are sidelined. When a heavily relied-upon vehicle incurs an unexpected tyre flat, the entyre job site can be compromised. A tyre incident on a large OTR vehicle can disrupt the stability of the equipment and potentially put employees at risk. Tyre-filled pneumatics also allow for customized durometer selection, which enables operators to tailor tyre technology for specific job applications and vehicle use. Savvy project managers know that having on-site transportation in good working condition is critical.

OTR Tyre Industry

The industry has been hit hard by economic effects of COVID-19 with adjusted growth expectations and reduced contract acquisition. Companies are already working diligently to maintain proper social distancing, PPE compliance and more. Good transportation protocols can help keep operators protected from accidents 48

and injury—and this includes determining the most appropriate and safest tyre solution for each particular use and application. During this and any other era, a tyre selection that will prevent flats and keep workers and expensive equipment out of harm’s way is a win-win for all. Also, given the challenges posed by coronavirus, it is all the more imperative that safety precautions be observed across the job site—with transportation considerations being front and center. OTR Tyres (Off-the-road tyres) are utilized for large-scale machinery at construction and mining and other sites with no roads. These tyres mainly made with premium casings and durable compounds. Off-the-road tyres offer substantial support for machinery used at various civil engineering sites, including ultralarge dump trucks, earth and gravel at mining and dam construction sites, bulldozers for earth removal and graders for road construction and snow removal. The production and sales volume of OTR tyres is directly affected by downstream industries and global economy. Over the past six years, the market of construction and mining equipment has experienced fast growth and decline, as well as the OTR Tyres market. The demand of OTR Tyres reached a peak in 2013, just as what the construction and mining equipment industry experienced. And over the past two years, the OTR tyres industry has faced decline which seems almost hard to bear for related enterprises. CM || www.constructionmirror.com ||

Operating in mated pairs, gears mesh their teeth with the teeth of another corresponding gear or toothed component which prevents slippage during the transmission process. Each gear or toothed component is attached to a machine shaft or base component, therefore when the driving gear (i.e., the gear that provides the initial rotational input) rotates along with its shaft component, the driven gear (i.e., the gear or toothed component which is impacted by the driving gear and exhibits the final output) rotates or translates its shaft component. Depending on the design and construction of the gear pair, the

transference of motion between the driving shaft and the driven shaft can result in a change of the direction of rotation or movement. Additionally, if the gears are not of equal sizes, the machine or system experiences a mechanical advantage which allows for a change in the output speed and torque (i.e., the force which causes an object to rotate). Gears and their mechanical characteristics are widely employed throughout industry to transmit motion and power in a variety of mechanical devices, such as clocks, instrumentation, and equipment, and to reduce or increase speed and torque in a variety of motorized devices, including automobiles, motorcycles, and machines. Other design characteristics, including construction material, gear shape, tooth construction and design, and gear pair configuration, help to classify and categorize the various types of gears available. Each of these gears offers different behaviors and advantages, but the requirements and specifications demanded by a particular motion or power transmission application determine the type of gear most suitable for use. Gears are available in a variety of designs, constructions, and configurations to suit a wide range of industries and applications. These various characteristics allow gears to be classified and categorized in several different ways, which include:

Gear Selection Considerations: Gears are employed in a variety of mechanical devices, and, consequently, several different types and designs are available. The suitability of each type of gear and its exact design for a motion or power transmission application is dependent on the specifications and requirements of the application. Some of the principal factors which may be considered when designing and choosing a gear include: • Operational and environmental conditions • Dimensional restrictions • Design standards • Costs Operational and Environmental Conditions: The operational and environmental conditions of the gear application largely influence the optimal type and design of gear as the conditions can affect the gear’s performance and durability. Some of the operational conditions which may affect a gear are the amount of weight applied, noise and vibration produced, and friction and stress placed on the teeth, while some of the environmental conditions which may affect a gear include temperature, humidity, and sanitation and cleanliness. These conditions influence a variety || www.constructionmirror.com ||

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

environmental conditions of the application. Given the employment of the proper lubricant, some of the benefits include the reduction of friction between gear teeth, mitigation of heat generated, and lowering of the amount of noise and vibration produced during operation. Once a suitable lubricant is selected, it must be properly applied. Proper application of a lubricant depends on a variety of factors, including operation speed and load. The most common application methods for gear lubrication include grease lubrication, splash lubrication, and forced oil circulation lubrication. • In grease lubrication, grease (rather than oil) is applied directly to the gears and components. The viscosity of the grease allows it to provide lubrication for longer periods before breaking down or wearing off, allowing for less frequent reapplication. This lubrication method is most suitable for open or enclosed gear systems operating at low speeds and with light loads. • In splash lubrication, the rotation of the gears distributes the lubricant across the gear device components. This lubrication method is suitable for enclosed gear systems which operate at higher speeds and with greater loads than grease lubrication. However, precise oil levels and temperatures must be maintained. • In forced circulation lubrication, the lubricant is applied to the gear teeth via an oil pump, which delivers the lubricant to the proper component by dropping (via piping), spraying, or misting it into place. While this method is highly effective, especially for high-speed or heavy-duty applications, it is also more expensive than other methods due to the number of components required for a complete system. Dimensional Restrictions: Beyond the operational and environmental conditions of the application, gears and their designs are also limited by the dimensional specifications—i.e., physical space— of the mechanical device. For example, gears are typically mated to suit the center distances between machine shafts. However, some applications may require an adjustment of the center distances to better fit within the dimensions of the mechanical gear system or machine, which necessitates a profile shift—i.e., deviation from the standard || June 2021 ||

of gear design factors, including the construction material, surface treatments, and lubricant type and lubrication method. Gear Construction Material: Gears are available in a variety of construction materials—e.g., cast iron and steel, fiber, nylon, and stainless steel— with each of these materials offering particular manufacturing and operational advantages. For example: • Cast iron is used for its ease of manufacturing and low cost, which make it suitable for high-volume or large-scale production applications which do not require high precision specifications. • Steel, such as carbon and alloy steel, is used for its high hardness and tensile strength, which make it suitable for producing highly durable gears. • Nylon is a low-cost material with lightweight and non-corrosive properties, which make it suitable for large-scale production and light-load applications. Gear Surface Treatments: Some of the surface treatments available for gears include grinding and heat treatment. Grinding down the surface of the gear teeth can decrease the amount of noise produced during operation, increase the amount of force which can be transmitted, and affect the gear’s precision classification. However, grinding also increases the overall cost of production. There are several heat treatment services available for gears include surface hardening, tempering, normalizing, annealing, and carburizing. These processes can affect the properties of the gear material, such as increasing its hardness and strength, which can improve the gear’s overall durability and longevity. Gear Lubrication: If adequately and properly applied, gear lubricants can help to extend the overall lifespan of a gear by preventing or reducing the amount of stress and fatigue experienced by the gear body and teeth. However, both the optimal type of lubricant and lubrication method are dependent on the requirements and specifications of the application. When selecting a lubricant, consideration should be given to the potential lubricant’s viscosity, load pressure capacity, thermal and chemical stability, and water separating, anti-foaming, and corrosion resisting properties within the operational and

tooth profile. Deviation from the standard tooth profile typically means adjusting—either increasing or decreasing—the tooth’s thickness. This adjustment changes the center distance, as well as the strength of the gear’s teeth. Other methods of managing dimensional restrictions include employing gear types and designs that are better suited for limited- or restricted-space applications. For example, internal-external gear pairs allow for the gears and their shaft or base components to be positioned closer together than external-only gear pairs, and hypoid gears allow for components to be placed lower within the machine or system, allowing for more space above. Design Standards: There are a wide variety of specifications for gears. But unfortunately, no universal industrial standards exist which define how a gear should be designed and manufactured. Typically, gears are produced either to the standards set by the individual manufacturer or to suit the design and specifications of a particular machine or system rather than those machines and systems being designed around a standard gear component. The former case makes it more difficult to find the proper gear type and design for an application among the standard components available from gear manufacturers, while the latter case increases the difficulty and cost of finding replacements for the customized part. While there are no universal gear standards, some countries have implemented their own industrial gear standards, especially in regards to precision gears. For example, in the United States, gears can be classified by standards set by the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA), while Japan classifies gears by Japan Industrial Standards (JIS) and Germany by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) standards. Costs: When producing a custom gear, the cost of manufacturing is influenced by several factors, including the gear design, construction material, surface treatments and finishes, precision standards, and lubricant and lubrication method. Industry professional and procurements agents also need to consider the durability and longevity of the custom gear to calculate the optimal maintenance and replacement schedule. While it is necessary to choose a gear which effectively fulfills the requirements of the application, it

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

is also important to keep in mind the overall lifecycle costs—i.e., the production, gear repair and maintenance, and replacement costs—of the chosen gear to better determine whether the device is worth the investment. For some applications, a standard, off-the-shelf gear may fulfill the requirements at a much lower cost.

Applications of Gears

Gears are devices used throughout industry for a variety of mechanical machines and systems. Several types of gears are available and employed in a wide range of residential, commercial, and industrial applications, including: • Aircrafts • Automobiles • Clocks • Marine systems • Material handling equipment • Measuring instrumentation • Power plants • Pumps One of the most widespread manner in which gears are applied is in gearboxes, which are devices comprised of gears contained within an enclosure or housing. These devices utilize a wide range of gear types— including worm gears, bevel gears, helical gears, and spur gears—and are engineered to perform a specific motion or power transmission task within the machine system, from changing the speed and torque to changing output shaft direction. Similar to most gear systems, gearboxes have a variety of uses, such as in automobiles and other motorized vehicles.

Motors

An electric motor is a machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Often the mechanical energy will be in the form of rotational energy. Electric motors producing a rotary force (torque) or sometimes linear force, are distinguished from devices such as solenoids or loudspeakers which do not generate a useable mechanical force. These latter devices are referred to as actuators or transducers. The basic principle of all motors is the use of an electric current flowing through a wire winding to create a magnetic field, which interacts with another magnetic field to generate a force in the form of rotational or linear movement energy.

The magnetic fields follow the basic principle that like fields repel and unlike fields attract, to create a mechanical force. Electrical motors in building applications may range in size from small devices consuming typically less than 1 Watt, such as may be found in a small clock or timer, to several hundred kilowatts, such as may be encountered in large scale mechanical services installations which may perform fluid pumping, air movement or compressor-driven refrigeration duties. Most motors used within building applications operate on alternating mains current (AC) and are of the induction motor type. These motors are smaller in size, and usually range in power from about 50 Watts up to several kilowatts. They may run on a single-phase mains supply. Larger motors, ranging from a few kilowatts in size up to several hundred kilowatts, more usually have a three-phase mains supply.

Types of Motors and How They Work

AC Motors: AC Motors are electro-mechanical devices powered by alternating current to produce rotational motion. The rotation provides mechanical work to drive other rotating machines such as pumps. Standard frame sizes are available over a range of powers to ease interchangeability. Enclosures can range from simple open designs to explosion-proof, non-ventilated designs, with totally enclosed, fan-cooled (TEFC) being common. An international rating system also prescribes the levels of cooling and protection. AC motors form a large portion of motors in use today and drive pumps, fans, compressors, etc. Sizes range from sub-fractional horsepower machines to 20,000 HP plus-sized units with metric sized units similarly available. AC motors will be either single- or three-phase. Three-phase machines are categorized by rotor design, either squirrel cage or wound rotor. Squirrel- cage designs use copper or aluminum rotor bars shorted by end rings and are, in a sense, true induction machines—a kind of rotating transformer. Wound rotors use wire-wound rotor poles equal in number to the poles on the stator, and slip rings provide a method of inserting resistance for starting and for varying speed. Full voltage, or across-the-line, starting of threephase machines is possible up to about 200 HP, after which a reduced-voltage method is often necessary especially for motors that are started

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

frequently, because of the noticeable voltage drop affecting lights, other motors, etc. Single-phase motors are used mostly in the fractional HP ranges. They are not self-starting and can be grouped by their starting method. The most widely-used design—the split phase motor—uses two stator windings to achieve a pair of unbalanced winding currents, with the auxiliary winding dropping out as the motor nears synchronous speed. A capacitor motor inserts a capacitor in the auxiliary winding which, in the case of a capacitor start machine, drops out as the motor nears running speed and, in the case of a two-value capacitor motor, switches to a second capacitor as it approaches running speed. In the permanent split capacitor design, the auxiliary winding and capacitor remain energized at running speed. Finally, the shaded-pole motor uses unevenly divided poles with shading coils which cause a rotating field to move in the direction of the shaded pole (i.e., irreversible). Shaded-pole motors are among the cheapest of the single-phase machines. Synchronous singlephase motors are used in timing devices.

Types of AC Motors.

DC Motors: DC Motors are electro-mechanical devices powered by direct current to produce rotational motion. The motion provides rotational work to drive other rotating machines such as hoists at varying speeds. Certain wiring arrangements can produce strong slow-speed torque, making them suitable as traction motors for locomotives, although these have largely been replaced by variable-frequency controlled motors. Likewise, golf cart motors are steadily being rejiggered from brushed designs to more advanced forms with electronic drives. Standard frame sizes are available over a range of powers to ease interchangeability. Enclosures can range from simple open designs to explosion-proof, non-ventilated designs. An international rating system also prescribes the levels of cooling and protection. DC motors have many applications in toys and consumer goods and are used heavily by automakers. They find service on elevators, electric forklifts, and conveyors, where constanttorque loads are normal. DC motors are available as brushed and brushless (permanent magnet) designs, the latter requiring electronic drives and controllers for their operation. Traditional brushed DC motors are classified

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

on the basis of the excitation used in the field winding with the three main distinctions being shunt, series, and compound. Shunt motors have low starting torques, low overload capacity, minimal speed variation in response to load, and poor stability at zero load. Series motors have high starting torques, high overload capacity, significant speed variation in response to load, and good stability at zero load. Compound motors fall somewhere between the other two in performance characteristics, though they too remain stable at zero load. Gearmotors: Gearmotors are electro-mechanical devices powered by alternating or direct current to produce rotational motion. The motion provides rotational work which is then stepped down through an integral gearhead to drive other rotating machines such as conveyors or packaging machines. Gearmotors are used where motors and speed reducers are required to produce high torque at slow speeds. By integrating the two components, gearmotors achieve efficiencies in size, eliminate external couplings, improve washdown resistance, etc. Often, gearheads are interchangeable between manufacturers. Although uncommon for large motors, gearmotors are quite common in fractional HP sizes. They are available in various output-shaft styles with choices among motors that include AC and brushed- and brushless-DC varieties. Stepper Motors: Stepper Motors are electromechanical devices powered by alternating current to produce rotational motion and positioning. Generally, stepper motors do not incorporate a feedback loop as do servomotors, but instead, achieve position control by turning the motor rotor a discrete number of steps. They are specific to motion control applications. Stepper motors are used in positioning applications where holding a position is important and are used on packaging machines, printers, etc., where the loss of position due to overload is not critical and where economy is important. Servomotors: Servomotors are electro-mechanical devices powered by alternating or direct current to produce rotational motion and positioning. Servomotors make use of a feedback loop to control the radial position of the motor rotor with respect to its stator. They are specific to motion control applications. Servomotors are used in positioning applications where smooth, controllable motion is paramount, an industrial robot, for example. A packaging machine might || www.constructionmirror.com ||

use a servomotor to index a precise amount of packaging film into a forming zone, in a second example, where in the past such feeding might have been controlled with a motor-driven mechanical indexer. Linear Motors: Linear Motors are electromechanical devices powered by alternating or direct current to produce linear rather than rotational motion. The linear motion is useful in applications where an air cylinder might be used but where greater precision and positional feedback are needed, or where the motion can vary from stroke to stroke. Motor configuration and forcer/slider shape can be concerns, as well. Linear motors are used in packaging machines, assembly machines, material handling equipment, and in various applications in medical equipment. Air Motors: Air Motors are mechanical devices powered by air pressure to produce rotational motion. The motion provides rotational work to drive other rotating machines such as take-up reels and tools. Air motors are used where a source of compressed air is available and where a steady torque regardless of speed is needed, such as the scrap take-up reel on a packaging machine. They are used in explosive atmospheres as well, where they are considered intrinsically safe. Hydraulic Motors: Hydraulic Motors are mechanical devices powered by fluid to produce rotational motion. The motion provides rotational work to drive other rotating elements such as the drive wheels of a heavy- equipment excavator. Hydraulic motors are used extensively in construction machinery where rotary motion is needed from a compact device and hydraulic power is already available. Hydraulic motors can be vane, gear, or piston types, similar to hydraulic pumps. LSHT, or Low Speed, High Torque motors are available from some makers. A modified vane-type motor, called a rotary abutment motor, purports to have lower friction and better sealing than an equivalent vane motor. CM

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

A dump truck, also known as a dumper truck or tipper truck, is used for taking dumps such as sand, gravel, or demolition waste for construction. A typical dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed, which is hinged at the rear and equipped with hydraulic rams to lift the front, allowing the material in the bed to be deposited (“dumped”) on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery. Dump trucks come in an assortment of types and configurations, with each designed for use across a variety of different applications, so picking the right one for your project or operation is important. Popular applications include using articulated dump trucks for civil and mining operations, rigid rear dump trucks for use in tandem with hydraulic excavators in mining, site dumpers and front tippers for use in compact or low capacity operations, track mounted dump truck for operations that require work on sandy, bog, dirt, snow, or muddy terrain, hi rail dump truck for use in railway projects, and underground dump truck for use in both hard-rock and soft-rock underground mining and tunnel construction projects.

Different types of Dump Trucks

60

Standard Dump Truck: A standard dump truck is a truck chassis with a dump body mounted to the frame. The bed is raised by a vertical hydraulic ram mounted under the front of the body or a horizontal hydraulic ram and lever arrangement between the frame rails, and the back of the bed is hinged at the back of the truck. The tailgate can be configured to swing up on top hinges (and sometimes also to fold down on lower hinges) or it can be configured in the “High Lift Tailgate” format wherein pneumatic rams lift the gate open and up above the dump body. Transfer Dump Truck: A transfer dump truck is a standard dump truck pulling a separate trailer with a movable cargo container, which can also be loaded with construction aggregate, gravel, sand, asphalt, klinkers, snow, wood chips, triple mix, etc. The second aggregate container on the trailer (“B” box) is powered by an electric motor, a pneumatic motor or a hydraulic line. It rolls on small wheels, riding on rails from the trailer’s frame into the empty main dump container (“A”

box). This maximizes payload capacity without sacrificing the maneuverability of the standard dump truck. Super Dump Truck: A super dump is a straight dump truck equipped with a trailing axle, a liftable, load-bearing axle rated as high as 13,000 pounds. Trailing 11 to 13 feet behind the rear tandem, the trailing axle stretches the outer “bridge” measurement, the distance between the first and last axles, to the maximum overall length allowed. This increases the gross weight allowed under the federal bridge formula, which sets standards for truck size and weight. Depending on the vehicle length and axle configuration, Superdumps can be rated as high as 80,000 pounds. GVW and carry 26 short tons of payload. When the truck is empty or ready to offload, the trailing axle toggles up off the road surface on two hydraulic arms to clear the rear of the vehicle. Semi-Trailer Bottom Dump Truck: A semi bottom dump or belly dump is a 3-axle tractor pulling a 2-axle trailer with a clamshell type dump gate || www.constructionmirror.com ||

in the belly of the trailer. The key advantage of a semi bottom dump is its ability to lay material in a windrow, a linear heap. In addition, a semi bottom dump is maneuverable in reverse, unlike the double and triple trailer configurations described below. These trailers may be found either of the windrow type shown in the photo or maybe of the cross spread type, with the gate opening front to rear instead of left and right. The cross spread type gate will actually spread the cereal grains fairly and evenly from the width of the trailer. By comparison, the windrow type gate leaves a pile in the middle. The cross spread type gate, on the other hand, tends to jam and may not work very well with coarse materials. Double & Triple Trailer Bottom Dump Truck: Double and triple bottom dumps consist of a 2-axle tractor pulling one single-axle semi-trailer and an additional full trailer (or two full trailers in the case of triples). These dump trucks allow the driver to lay material in windrows without leaving the cab or stopping the truck. Site dumpers and front tippers: If a project needs

something more compact, a site dumper or front tipper might be your best bet. With the driver at the rear of the machine protected by roll-bars, the capacity of these trucks range from 1 tonne to 10 tonne, while being both safe and sturdy in confined work areas. Site dumpers are handy compact machines used for off road cartage of loads on site and are available to hire in a variety of configurations. As an extremely versatile earthmoving machine, site dumper’s are engineered with an 180° swivel skip bin which allows for precise backfilling. Front tippers' ability to pivot sharply and oscillate allows you to get in and out of any tight access areas on your job, no matter how muddy or slippery the conditions. For all these reasons, site dumpers have become very popular in the civil and building industry. Roll-Off Trucks: A Roll-off has a hoist and subframe, but nobody, it carries removable containers. The container is loaded on the ground, then pulled onto the back of the truck with a winch and cable. The truck goes to the dumpsite after it has been dumped the empty container is taken and placed to be loaded or stored. The hoist is raised and the container slides down the subframe so the rear is on the ground. The container has rollers on the rear and can be moved forward or back until the front of it is lowered onto the ground. The containers are usually open-topped boxes used for rubble and building debris, but rubbish compactor containers are also carried. A newer hook-lift system does the same job, but lifts/

lower and dumps the container with a boom arrangement instead of a cable and hoist. Rigid Dump Trucks: Off-highway dump trucks are heavy construction equipment and share little resemblance to highway dump trucks. Bigger off-highway dump trucks are used strictly off-road for mining and heavy dirt hauling jobs. Rigid rear dump trucks are one of the most popular types of dump trucks to hire is a rigid rear dump truck, perfect for use in tandem with hydraulic excavators in mining. These machines are found only in mining and quarrying applications and can be literally enormous. Rigid rear dump trucks are perfect for off-road mining and heavy dirt hauling projects where you might need to dig out roads and need a truck to haul the massive amounts of dirt to another location. However, rigid rear dump trucks have limited flexibility, and require significant training and skill to operate given their gargantuan capacities. Haul Truck: Haul trucks are used in large surface mines and quarries. They have a rigid frame and conventional steering with the drive at the rear wheel. As of late 2013, the largest ever production haul truck is the 450 metric ton BelAZ 75710, followed by the Liebherr T 282B, the Bucyrus MT6300AC, and the Caterpillar 797F, which each have payload capacities of up to 400 short tons.

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

Most large size haul trucks employ Diesel-electric powertrains, using the Diesel engine to drive an AC alternator or DC generator that sends electric power to electric motors at each rear wheel. The Caterpillar 797 is unique for its size, as it employs a Diesel engine to power a mechanical powertrain, typical of most road-going vehicles and intermediary size haul trucks. Other major manufacturers of haul trucks include SANY, XCMG, Hitachi, Komatsu, DAC, Terex, and BelAZ. Articulated Hauler: An articulated dumper is an all-wheel-drive, off-road dump truck. It has a hinge between the cab and the dump box but is distinct from a semi-trailer truck in that the power unit is a permanent fixture, not a separable vehicle. Steering is accomplished via hydraulic cylinders that pivot the entire tractor in relation to the trailer, rather than a rack and pinion steering on the front axle as in a conventional dump truck. By this way of steering, the trailer’s wheels follow the same path as the front wheels. Together with all-wheel drive and low center of gravity, it is highly adaptable to rough terrain. Major manufacturers include Volvo CE, Terex, John Deere, and Caterpillar. Underground dump trucks: These trucks designed for high production, low cost-per-tonne hauling in underground mining applications and carrying

payloads from 30 to 55t and above. Underground dump trucks can be used in both hard-rock and soft-rock underground mining and tunnel construction. Operators working on these projects often put in long operating hours. As a result, underground articulated truck manufacturers have made driver comfort a top priority (other than safety - which is always the most important factor). Many modern underground dump trucks are now ergonomically designed for comfort, control, productivity and to minimise operator fatigue.

Dump truck Market Scenario

equipment tracking system, power, and standard mode, and fuel management these are some of the features manufacturers are providing to their customers free of cost or against the cost. Directly or indirectly it gives you better return to your pocket. Options for Different Attachments: Backhoe loaders in themselves are amazingly versatile machines. Backhoe loaders are favourites of industry experts across the globe. Being a favourite doesn’t keep the machine from becoming outdated or obsolete though. We live in the day and age where machines are required to single handedly perform multiple tasks. Multi functional machines are the trend of the changing times. The backhoe loader while versatile will have to adhere to the trend if its market share has to be kept safe. Attachments for a backhoe loader are the answer to the multi function machine dilemma. There are different types of attachments available for a backhoe such as auger drill, rock beaker, pole erector, pallet fork, multi functional bucket etc. These attachments make backhoe a versatile machine which can be used for various jobs as per the requirements. Backhoes are an excellent platform for many applications because the machines are extremely stable. Telehandler: A Multi-Use Equipment R

|| June 2021 ||

|| www.constructionmirror.com ||

The telescopic handler is a multi-use piece of equipment that can be found under many names. Also called a telehandler, teleporter, reach forklift, boom lift, lull or cherry picker, the telehandler is often used in agriculture to move hay and hay bales. Telehandlers are now seen on construction sites and manufacturing plants among others. They can be used for a variety of jobs including moving heavy loads off trucks, cleaning up sites and moving materials. A hybrid crane-forklift, a telehandler can also be fitted with other attachments like a bucket, muck grab, or winch. It can also be fitted with a platform attachment to act as a boom-lift. The extendable boom on a telehandler can usually be elevated at a 70 degree angle and extend out as far as 30 feet or further. The max weight restriction of an individual telehandler is determined by a mix of factors including boom extension, angle, the type of attachment and wind speed. The telehandler is a truly versatile piece of equipment. The extendable boom and ability to use a variety of attachments gives the telehandler many different applications.

Primarily used as a “lift and place” tool, the telehandler is seen as a more advanced forklift since it has a greater extension ability than a traditional forklift. It can be fitted with pallet forks, a bucket, lifting jibs, sweeper and work platforms. With so many different attachments, telehandlers can help perform jobs like lifting and moving material, moving loads of earth, cleaning worksites, lifting workers to an aerial height.

Telehandler

Difference between a telehandler & forklift

78

The Boom: Being fitted with horizontal boom rather than a vertical mast gives a telehandler an entirely different look; I once saw one with a jib attachment that, at a distance, looked more like a mobile crane than a forklift. The boom is capable of elevating to an angle from horizontal of approximately 70 degrees, give or take a few, and can also telescope (extend/retract) to lengths of 30 feet and beyond, depending on the model. This ability of the boom to telescope has led to telehandlers being referred to as “zoom booms,” a nickname that has caught on rather well with operators. Another (optional) boom related function is called “transaction.” Telehandlers with this option have a boom that is mounted to the chassis in such a way that, when activated by the operator, allows the entire boom to travel forward and back, typically for distances up to 8- feet or so. One significant advantage of this function is that it allows the forks to be inserted under, or withdrawn from a load cleanly (no snags), regardless of the boom angle. Frame Tilt: This is a unique feature common to telehandlers. The operator may activate controls to alter the lateral (side to side) angle of the frame 10 to 15 degrees in either direction from horizontal. Mounted in the cab is a curved, liquid filled tube (frame tilt/level indicator) with a bubble indicator similar to a carpenter’s level that indicates the lateral angle of the frame relative to the ground; a very handy device to use to level the frame before elevating the boom on rough terrain. Steering: Some telehandlers have rear wheel steering similar to a vertical mast type unit however most have three steering options which the operator may select; front, circle and crab. If the operators choose the “front” steering option, only the front wheels react to the movement of the steering wheel. If the “circle” steering option

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

is selected, the front and rear wheel react in opposite direction giving the unit a surprisingly tight turning radius for its size. If the “crab” steering option is chosen, all four wheels react in the same direction allowing the unit to move diagonally over the ground. The Carriage: Like conventional forklifts, the lifting attachment (and there are many) can be tilted forward and back from horizontal, although the amount of forward tilt possible far exceeds that of vertical mast type forklifts. In fact, most telehandlers are capable of tilting forward to a point where the carriage is parallel with the ground! In addition, many units have rotating carriages as well which allow the operator to adjust the lifting attachment radially, meaning the load can be tilted side to side as well as forward and back. Load Capacity: Determining the load capacity of a telehandler is a completely different exercise than it is on a vertical mast unit. Since the capacity of the unit is dependent on such things as: boom angle and extension, amount of boom transaction deployed (if applicable), whether the unit is lifting on outriggers or rubber (tires), which lifting attachment is used, grade, wind, etc., the operator has much more information to consider. Telehandlers often have several load charts that the operator must reference to determine the load capacity of a given lift. Capacity may differ by thousands of pounds depending on the configuration of the boom and the unit in general. Operation: With so many options and systems unique to telehandlers it is extremely important for operators to receive equipment specific training and evaluation.

Attachments for Telehandler

Forks are the most common attachment for a telehandler as the boom allows for easy lifting of materials and cargo from the ground up to aerial heights. Compact or midsize telehandlers can be used indoors to move and transport items in warehouses or manufacturing plants. The application of a platform attachment can make it easier for warehouse workers to work at heights if a boom or scissor aerial lift isn’t an option. Forklift and bucket attachments are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to allow for easy scooping, loading, lifting, and moving of || www.constructionmirror.com ||

material from the ground to a loft or to load into a truck. These applications are helpful in both construction and agriculture. Telehandlers have applications for all four seasons. In the winter telehandlers can be used for snow removal. Since the machine sits very low to the ground they are great for plowing snow in parking structures. Traditional tractors or even trucks can be too big for certain areas making the telehandler a great tool or snow removal.

that leads the way for construction machines and innovation.

Potential Safety Hazards Telehandlers

As it is with any type of heavy machinery operation, use of a telehandler requires training and planning to help ensure safe operation. Never operate a telehandler without first receiving proper training. Never operate a telehandler on a Jobsite if it is not safe to do so. There are a number of reasons, like bad weather, excessive loose materials and debris in the work area, wet or muddy terrain, or high wind speeds, which can increase the safety hazards of using a telehandler. Always follow safety procedures and take the time to plan accordingly before beginning to work with a piece of machinery.

Caterpillar has 11 different models of telehandlers, ranging from max lift heights of 18 – 54 feet. The CAT TH255C is their smallest model with a rated load capacity of 5,500 lbs and a maximum lift height of 18,37 feet. JCB JCB was established 1945 and has been pioneering the idea of the telehandler since 1977. Today JCB is one of the world’s top equipment manufacturers with over 2,000 dealer locations in over 150 countries. The original JCB telehandler – the JCB 520 Telescopic Handler – was launched by Joseph Bamford in 1977. It took the industry by storm and lead to the development of the JCB Loadall range of products.

Telehandler

Bocbcat Bobcat is the transformational brand of Melroe Manufacturing Company. Edward Gideon Melroe founded the company in 1947 and in 1962 took on the design of the Melroe Bobcat skid steer. The skid steer gained such popularity that it eventually started doing business under its own name: Bobcat Company. Since then Bobcat has continued to deliver equipment innovation. It also started manufacturing telehandlers.

80

The Bobcat VersaHANDLER is a popular telehandler which offers increased lift height, reach a capacity to increase the capacity of the machine. The company then went on to develop a selection of attachments for the VersaHANDLER. JLG John L Grove founded JLG in 1969 and sold their very first boom lift in the 1970s. Since then JLG has expanded into scissor lifts, trailers and even telehandlers. They now have two varieties of telehandlers: the JLG High Capacity Telehandlers and the standard JLG Telehandler.

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

Their standard telehandlers all feature a Tier 4 Final engine to make the machines more fuel efficient and better for the environment. They have life capacities ranging from 5,500 to 12,000 lbs and can reach heights up to 55 feet. JLG designs their telehandlers with ultra-strong booms which make them notorious to reach higher and further than any other brand.

Telehandler Market Scenario

The current market size of telehandlers in India is very low when compared with the world’s advanced markets. While rental opportunities for telehandlers in a mature market are immense, but India’s rental market is small, and the rates quite high as there is a limited number of telehandlers available. Being registerable assets like other wheeled construction/road equipment, the policies of their use is well in place. The only lacunae in the telehandlers’ market growth is the lack of awareness of the telehandler’s multifarious uses; customers still prefer using the conventional and cheaper pick-and-carry cranes. The Indian market for telehandlers is at a very nascent stage as awareness across sectors is still very limited. On the upside, demand has been increasing steadily, especially so from the infrastructure construction and mining segments. Mostly customers look for a standard telehandler which comes with forks which are used for moving or shifting mostly palletised load. However, depending upon the nature of the load or a particular type of application, the customers may take additional optional attachments like bucket (for loose load, sand, gravel, stone chips, loose metals etc), tyre handler (for carrying tyres of construction equipment especially during changing of such tyres in these equipment), hook jib and winch for lifting and marching with unitised load and man basket for lifting people. The telehandler (also known as telescopic handler and telescopic forklift) can be used for a wide range of applications across infrastructure, construction, mining, metals, minerals, logistics, ports, shipyards, and other sectors. Owing to its four-wheel drive, it can be used safely in rough terrains. Availability of attachments such as forks, bucket, jib with crane hook, winch and man basket (which are quick and interchangeable) enhance the machine’s use in a variety of applications, and within a short period of time.

Telehandler

Electrification to Emerge as Disruptive Force

82

The trend of electrification of telehandlers is gaining grounds owing to rising stringency in environment policies. High levels of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) contribute to inferior product quality. Electric powertrains in telehandlers curb carbon footprint on construction sites, thereby, creating greener working conditions, as well as improving air quality for workers and local community. In addition, electric telehandlers offer significant fuel, and cost saving, with lesser refueling of the machinery, leading to reduced plant movement. These ecofriendly electric drive units perform nearly in line with conventional models, yet sans emissions and noise of internal combustion (IC) engines. They offer a plethora of further benefits such as decreased charging times and significant savings in maintenance compared to IC engine telehandlers.

Technological Advances for Smarter and Safer Jobsites

Increasing electronic content within telehandlers is paving way for cabin innovations. Lasers, scales, and global positioning systems (GPS) all come with electronic displays and sensors. With telematics, fleet operators are able to collect, store, assess and report data regarding assets to ensure most effective usage of resources. This electronic content allows operational efficacy,

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

yet demands protection against radio frequency interference (RFI), electromagnetic interference (EMI), and vibration. As the importance of ROI surges, telematics is also on rapid growth curve. Telematics enables telehandler owners and operators to access to critical equipment and engine operational data in order to make better decisions on their investments. Data points such as engine hours, location, maintenance schedules, and fuel and battery levels - are comfortably available in real time and accessible from mobile devices or desktops. In addition, telematics monitors fault codes and other important alerts. Furthermore, telematics aid owners and operators in maintenance planning, staving off downtime and unnecessary maintenance expenses.

Renting Over Buying' Remains an Influential Trend

'Renting over buying' will continue as a prominent trend in the telehandlers market space, as renting makes more sense if the end users are utilizing the equipment for less than 60 percent of the time. However, sales of telehandlers for agricultural and construction applications are likely to soar upwards through 2029. Meanwhile, manufacturers are focusing on fine-tuning their expansion plans, refurbishing their offerings, and entering into definitive alliances, which will help them achieve long-term growth. Crusher

Different types of crushers & Their Setup

Crushers are machines used to reduce the size of rocks, stones and ore. They are often utilized in aggregates production, construction material recycling and in mining operations. Our offering covers different gyratory crushers, jaw crushers, cone crushers and impact crushers – optimized for any size reduction need. Jaw crushers: Jaw crushers, which use a moveable jaw and a stationary plate designed to form a ‘V’, crush material using compressive force. These crushers offer an ideal solution for primary crushing applications involving hard, abrasive materials such as granite or recycled concrete. Efficient and less costly to operate because of their minimal moving parts, jaw crushers are well suited to applications where the primary objective is to reduce raw feed material to a manageable size, usually down to about 150mm. While these machine may be appealing due to their lower operating costs, they are not well suited to applications that require smaller material sizing and are therefore used in conjunction with other crushers. Another critical application factor to note is the effect of contaminated material; jaw crushers do not perform well with materials contaminated with clay, dirt or metal debris. Cone crushers: Cone crushers, which are also known for their ability to crush hard, abrasive ores and rocks, break material by squeezing or compressing it between convex- and concaveshaped surfaces. Best suited for secondary crushing applications, cone crushers are designed to crush pre-sized materials, usually 100mm, 150mm, or 200mm, depending on the size of the crusher. Cone crushers can

Crusher

Industry Theme

form finished products down to 12mm or less. Like the jaw crusher, the cone crusher provides a relatively low-cost crushing solution, but there are application drawbacks which may make another crushing solution more appealing. First, cone crushers cannot accept all material sizes. Any material fed to the crusher must be pre-sized for that particular crusher (usually 200mm or less). In addition, the cone crusher will not produce a consistent cubical product, which is a key requirement in many material specifications. Finally, these units, like jaw crushers, are not suitable for handling any clay or metal mixed in with the rock or concrete feed material. Impact crushers: Designed to fill the gap left in the market by cone and jaw crushers, horizontal impact crushers are ideally suited for contaminated materials and can easily handle any clay, dirt or metal mixed in with the feed material, such as rebar, wire mesh or dowel pins. Horizontalshaft impactor (HSI) units produce a uniform cubical product and can deliver high reduction ratios, allowing them to accept all in-feed and providing maximum productivity in both primary and secondary applications. Whilst HSI units can handle hard material, they are ideally suited for soft-to-medium rock. HSI crushers consist of a rotor attached to a horizontal rotating shaft. The shaft is placed inside a chamber which is lined with replaceable liner plates, anvils and blow bars. Material is fed into the top of the chamber where it impacts the rotor which then throws the material outward against the curtain anvils. Repeated impacts against the curtain anvils by the blow bars reduces the material until the desired size is reached. Material sizing is achieved by rotor rotational speeds and adjustments of the clearance between the blow bars and curtains. The nature of HSI crushing can lead to slightly higher operating costs, the cost being incurred for greater versatility and uniform product sizing.

Feeding jaw crushers

Jaw crushers are routinely choke fed, as this maximizes production capacity and ensures particles are uniformly broken. This promotes stone-on-stone crushing, breaking up flaky or slabby particles. If you seek fewer fines, trickle feeding material into the jaw crusher could achieve this. But this would have an adverse effect on particle shape, 86

and it also reduces throughput capacity, hindering the crusher’s efficiency. Ideally, the feed rate should not be switched from choke to non-choke, as this can cause problems downstream at the secondary processing plant. In practice, many jaw crushers are fed in this intermittent fashion due to gaps in the delivery of feed material from the quarry. Additionally, jaw crusher feed should be pre-screened using a grizzly screen prior to crushing to remove material finer than the closed-side setting.

Setting jaw crushers

Ideally, the reduction ratio of a jaw crusher should be 6-to-1. There are different ways to calculate reduction ratio, but the best way is something called the P80 factor. The reduction ratio is then calculated by comparing the input feed size passing 80 percent versus the discharge size that passes 80 percent. The finer the closed-side setting, the greater the proportion of fines produced. The closed-side setting of a jaw crusher helps determine the nip angle within a chamber, typically 19 to 23 degrees. Too large of an angle causes boiling in the crushing chamber. This is where the jaw plates cannot grip onto the rock, and it keeps slipping up and down, avoiding being crushed. The nip angle gets flatter as the machine is set tighter. The settings on a jaw crusher are designed to produce material ideal for secondary crushing. The best particle shape is typically found in material that is about the same size as the closed-side setting. Smaller sizes will contain a higher proportion of elongated particles because they have passed through the crusher without being touched. Larger sizes may also contain a higher proportion of elongated particles because they are further from the closed-side setting. This can cause bridging issues in downstream machines.

Feeding cone and gyratory crushers

Uniform distribution of feed material around the cone crusher inlet is good practice. This allows production of a consistent product, as well as efficient, reliable operation of the crusher. Choke feeding is important for cone crushers because it maintains a good particle shape by facilitating an inter-particle crushing action. || www.constructionmirror.com ||

Trickle feeding is not the best option because it increases the proportion of flaky material in the crusher product, hindering its efficiency. It is a good rule to maintain about 10 to 15 percent of material finer than the closed-side setting in the feed to assist crushing action. More than 10 to 15 percent will likely cause ring bounce due to the pressures in the chamber.

Setting cone and gyratory crushers

The liner profiles are designed for a range of product sizes, from extra coarse to extra fine. The extra fine liner profile will result in the highest fines proportion for a given cone crusher. It’s important to find the right liner for the feed gradation and desired product. If the liner is too large, feed material will drop too far in the chamber before being crushed. Too fine of a liner will prevent material from entering the chamber at all. Monitoring the crushing force as registered through the load on the crusher motors, as well as the pressure on the hydraulic mantle adjustment mechanism, will give forewarning of crusher packing problems before they affect your efficiency. Also, the finer the closed-side setting, the greater the proportion of fines produced. The finer setting lowers throughput volume. Try to match the closed-side setting of the crusher to the top size of the product to be produced. If closing the circuit at 1 in. to produce a 1-in.minus product, set the crusher at or near 1 in. – or slightly below.

Feeding impact crushers

Size reduction in an impact crusher relies on energy being conveyed into the rock from the rotor, and it begins with your feed. The initial impact is responsible for more than 60 percent of the crushing action, with the remainder made up of impact against an adjustable breaker bar and a small amount of inter-particle collision. This is why it is vitally important that the feed arrangement to an impact crusher ensures an even distribution of feed material across the full width of the rotor. This will allow for even distribution of energy into the feed material and uniform wear patterns, ensuring consistent product gradation and power consumption.

Setting impact crushers

Size reduction and, ultimately, the crusher setting || www.constructionmirror.com ||

are directly proportional to the rotor speed. This largely dictates how many fines are produced. Slower rotor speeds can be used as a means of reducing fines but may result in a product with more oversize or return than is desired. Slower rotor speeds are preferable as a means of minimizing the wear on crusher components, as well as for achieving less fines production and optimal product size. The product grading from an impact crusher will change throughout the life of the wear parts, particularly the impact hammers or blow bars. As the profile of the hammer changes with increased wear, the product grading becomes coarser. Many modern impact crusher installations have a variable speed drive arrangement that allows an increase in the rotor speed to compensate for wear on the impact hammers. In many impact crushers, a third curtain or crushing chamber can be added to increase reduction in every pass through the machine. This can be important in finer product applications where the third chamber can provide the desired output gradation. A third chamber that increases the reduction will also increase the power needs and, normally, the wear cost. One tip to consider: Decreasing the gap between the hammers and impact curtain increases particle retention in the chamber. This increases the size reduction ratio, but it also reduces efficiency throughput capacity and increases fines production.

Maximizing the productivity of Crusher

Operate at a consistent closed-side discharge setting: Producing a consistent product quantity, quality, uniformity and attaining a balanced circuit begins with operating the cone crusher at a consistent closed-side discharge setting. If a crusher is allowed to operate at a wider-thanoptimum setting for even a short period of time, the result will be less product and an increase in oversized material. Keep in mind that oversized product almost always creates circuit flow problems within the aggregate plant. An example of the effect that crusher setting has on the product gradation is as follows: If the target crusher setting is 3/8 in. (10 mm) but the setting is not checked and it wears open to 1/2 in. (13 mm), then the end result is a 15 percent decrease in the minus 3/8-in. (10 mm) material size. This is a substantial decrease || June 2021 ||

in productivity. Operate at a consistent “choke-fed” cavity level: If a crusher operates at varying cavity levels throughout the shift, the result will be an inconsistent product shape and inconsistent production rate. Operating a cone crusher at a low cavity level (half cavity) will result in a significantly coarser product gradation, and this low cavity level will also produce more flat and elongated product particles. Efforts should be made to operate the crusher at a proper choke-fed cavity level, as the favorable end result will be increased crusher throughput tonnage and a more cubical-shaped product. This tip is particularly important for the tertiary (short head) crushers in the circuit, as they produce the vast majority of an aggregate operation’s salable products. Do not trickle feed the crusher: Trickle feeding a cone crusher should be avoided because it not only results in poor productivity and poor product shape, but it can also adversely affect bearing alignment within said crusher. Due to the operational characteristics of a cone crusher, when crushing, it should never be operated below 40 percent rated horsepower. To obtain a proper “loaded bearing alignment” and to maximize productivity, the crusher should be operated above 40 percent rated horsepower yet below 100 percent rated horsepower of the drive motor Ensure the feed is evenly distributed: The incoming feed material should be directed on a vertical plane into the center of the crusher. When the incoming feed is not directed into the center of the cone, one side of the crushing cavity could be quite full while the opposite side of the cavity could be low or empty. This will always

result in a low crusher throughput tonnage, the production of more flat and elongated product particles and oversized product. This typically prompts crusher operators to tighten the crusher setting in order to get the crusher to make the smaller product size that they are trying to produce. This in turn can result in an overload condition in the form of adjustment ring movement on the side of the crusher that is heavily loaded. Over the long term, this can cause the adjustment ring to become tilted on the main frame, resulting in an even larger loss of productivity. Ensure the feed is not segregated: All incoming feed material should be well mixed and homogenous. A segregated feed condition exists when large stones are directed to one side of the crushing cavity and small stones are directed to the opposite side. The side of the crusher receiving the small stones will have a higher-than-normal bulk density, and this can lead to something known as “packing” or “pancaking.” This in turn leads to adjustment ring movement on the side of the crusher receiving the smaller feed stones. Adjustment ring movement forces the operator to open the crusher setting to avoid this overload condition. This results in the production of oversized product due to the increase in crusher setting. In addition, segregated feeding and the resultant adjustment ring movement can lead to a tilted adjustment ring, resulting in larger loss of productivity. Minimize surge loading for a more efficient circuit: Surge loading of any crusher is a “production enemy.” Surge piles or feed hoppers, along with variable-speed feeding devices, can be used to provide a better and more consistent feed control to the crusher. This allows the operator to run the crusher at a very consistent cavity level for extended periods of time. Providing better crusher feed control for the cone crusher through the use of surge piles, hoppers and variable-speed feeding devices such as belt conveyors or vibrating pan feeders can easily increase crusher productivity by a minimum of 10 percent. Understand the design limitations of the cone crusher: Every cone crusher has three design limitations. These are the volume limit, the horsepower limit and the crushing force limit. Regarding the volume limit, each crushing || www.constructionmirror.com ||

90

cavity has a volumetric limit that determines maximum throughput, and a choke-fed crusher is operating at its volumetric limit. The volume limit is exceeded when feed material overflows the top of the crusher. As for the horsepower limit, each crusher has been designed to operate at maximum power draw, and power draw will increase as the feed rate increases and as the feed material is crushed finer. The horsepower limit is exceeded when the crusher draws more power than it is rated for. Operate within the crusher design limitations: If you find the crusher operating in a crushing force overload condition (ring movement) or a power overload condition (excessive amperage), open the crusher setting slightly, but try to stay choke fed. The advantage of staying choke fed is the fact that there will still be rock-on-rock crushing and grinding taking place in the crushing cavity. This helps to maintain good cubical product even though the setting is slightly larger than optimum. Monitor and maintain a proper crusher speed: If proper drive belt tension is not maintained, the belts will slip and the crusher will slow down. A slowing crusher will cause incredibly high power peaks at a very low crusher throughput tonnage. Improper or neglected drive maintenance will result in a high-horsepower consumption at a low crusher throughput tonnage, and this inefficient use of connected horsepower will result in a higher-than-normal energy cost per ton of material crushed. A speed sensor can be used to monitor the crusher countershaft speed, which will send a warning signal of a slowing crusher to the programmable logic controller (PLC), or it could be wired to simply turn on a warning lamp. When a warning is detected, the maintenance department can be dispatched to re-tighten the drive belts. When a

CONSTRUCTION MIR ROR

|| June 2021 ||

speed sensor is used, drive belt life is extended and proper production levels can be maintained. Determine the percentage of fines in the feed: “Fines in the crusher feed” is defined as material entering the top of the crusher, which is already equal to or smaller than the crusher’s closed-side discharge setting. As a rule of thumb, the maximum number of fines in the crusher feed should not exceed 25 percent for secondary crushers or 10 percent for tertiary crushers. When there is an excessive quantity of fines in the feed, it is typically the result of a vibrating screen problem. This problem could be due to the fact that the screen is insufficient in size, or a screen that is sufficient in size yet is inefficient in operation. Re-crushing and re-handling product size material due to an insufficiently sized screen, inefficiencies due to the way the screen is set up or due to improper vibrating screen maintenance will lead to an excessive quantity of “fines in the crusher feed.” This will lead to inefficient use of connected crusher horsepower and a higher energy cost per ton of material crushed. Limit the height from which the feed material drops: The maximum distance from which the feed material should fall from into the top of a small to mid-size cone crusher is 3 ft. When the feed material drops from a much greater distance, the stones tend to slam into the V-shaped crushing cavity with such velocity that it subjects the crusher to shock loads and extremely high stress levels. This situation is referred to as high-velocity wedging, and it can result in power overloads or force overloads – or both. This action puts undue stress and strain on the crusher components, and it results in increased maintenance repair costs and poor productivity. CM

Advantages Of Staying

In An Integrated Townships During Covid Times Abhishek Bharadwaj Chief Marketing Officer, Shristi Group India has witnessed a revolution in the concept of housing in the last couple of decades. One of the concepts that radically changed the country’s real estate landscape is the emergence of Integrated Townships. This paradigm shift in the housing sector has resulted in the development of more and more self-sustained Integrated Townships across the country. The concentration of population in the tier II cities due to rapid urbanization has triggered an exponential rise in the demand for housing and infrastructure and had spawned the advent of integrated townships redefining the skyline of the tier II cities. Interestingly enough, the concept of Integrated Township is no longer confined to the metros and tier one cities alone, but has rapidly propagated to the semi urban and tier II cities as well. The basic objective of the integrated township is to offer the dwellers a complete city experience that provides a holistic ecosystem comprising of high street retail, shopping mall, school, healthcare facility, park, open space, kids’ play area, office spaces, hotels, clubs, convention centers and other infrastructure - all within the township premises. Shristinagar in Asansol, West Bengal that has been developed by Bengal Shristi Infrastructure Development Limited in collaboration with Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA) under Government of West Bengal in line with the approved government model for Public Private Partnership. The total built up area is 6 million square feet and land area is 90 acres. This mega integrated township at Asansol comprises of lifestyle apartments, group housing, plots, bungalows

& row housing and a central business district. It will house approximately 7,000 families when complete. Group housing and bungalows have been completed and approximately 2000 families are residing there. Lifestyle living options with townhouses and high-rise apartments are under construction. The leisure club, Odyssey, is already under operation and is equipped with all modern facilities. The smart houses (Sangati) fall under the Pradhan Matri Awas Yojna (PMAY) scheme. The Central Business District comprising of a shopping mall, Sentrum, with multiplex and a modern commercial complex (Sentrum Office Block) is operational too. Shristinagar also houses a school, Srihari Global School and a hospital is also in the anvil. There are huge open spaces in the township with landscaping and ample greenery. The recent trying times have pointed out the advantages of staying in an integrated township. Huge open-air spaces ensure that safe physical distancing is maintained; a walk or a jog to keep oneself fit is not affected in any way. Airy and spacious rooms help in work from home set up. The mall has a convenience store to take care of the daily needs even during covid times. A medical store ensures basic medical needs are met with. The children’s play area helps to keep the young happy since they are stuck in their homes attending to online classes. Restriction of entry in the gated community helps in checking unnecessary crowd. Also, the ones who come in are thoroughly checked and sanitized thereby keeping the entire township safe. Integrated townships are here to stay and will rule the real estate segment in the coming days. CM || www.constructionmirror.com ||
