With industry majors being positive about the government’s plans on meeting the target of 175 GW of installed clean energy capacity by 2022, Budget 2020 was rather a much-awaited affair for the renewable energy industry. To help us further understand the hits and misses (though not anticipated but, if any) of this year’s budget, KPMG analysts present a detailed overview of the key announcements made for the renewable energy sector and they imply about the future of the sector. (The details have been presented in a report prepared by KPMG India’s Energy and Natural Resources department.) India’s power sector may be in a worse state than earlier thought, with the Centre coming across instances of states failing to pay struggling distribution utilities for free power supplied to farms and unmetered consumers, though states claimed to have made substantive payments. Free electricity to farmers and other such subsidies have burdened power distribution companies (discoms) and generators in India, where average aggregate technical and commercial losses are at 21.4%, among the highest in the world. Even as soaring subsidy costs have left state governments with little money to spend on welfare programmes, they are reluctant to end free power supply, fearing a political backlash. As the supply of power to the agricultural sector is unmetered, most utilities write off losses because of transmission and distribution as agricultural consumption. According to government documents, “96.4% of the subsidy was reported as received. However, it was noted that the subsidy is underpaid due to inadequate compensation against unmetered/agri consumers".

Budget 2020

Union Budget 2020 Budget 2020 is going to blow the growth across sector

T

he annual budget announced by the FM has given special impetus to the power and infrastructure sector and allocating Rs 22,000 crore for renewable and power sector is going to push for faster development and growth across sector. The announcement made by FM to replace energy meters with pre-paid smart meters will further help in complete digitization of the whole system and will help in bring about more financially healthier utilities. The FM has urged state governments to implement smart meters in the next three years and HPL being one of the leading manufacturer of smart meters sees this as a huge opportunity. In addition, the implementation of five Smart city projects in PPP mode will give more opportunities to the private companies. Gautam Seth, Joint Managing Director HPL Electric & Power Ltd.

Budget has some cautious steps towards utilization "The Budget 2020 has some prudent steps towards improving consumption from the middle class and energising the economy into a phase of recovery. The measures under ACE - Aspirations, Economic Development, Caring Society - will be crucial for the betterment of the economy on the whole. Steps like boosting investments for development of smart cities, Simplification of GST returns, making affordable housing more accessible, prominence of rural & skills development, government’s reform towards reduced central government debt, and a much needed tax relief for consumers will not only uplift the manufacturing sector but also set India well on the path to become a 5 trillion dollar economy. Further in line with the government’s vision to eradicate poverty so far we have been successful in bringing 271 million citizens out of poverty. Vivek Sharma, Managing Director Panasonic Life Solutions

Budget will give a major boost to the renewable industry “The Budget for FY 20-21 has affirmed its commitment to clean energy with a proposal to allocate Rs 22,000 crore for the renewable sector. The plan to provide standalone solar powered pumps to 20 lakh farmers, allows farmers to generate solar power and set up large solar power capacity along the rail tracks will encourage the use of clean and renewable energy. Further, the decision to extend concessional corporate tax rate of 15% to new power generating companies engaged will give a major boost to the renewable sector. Additionally, the focus on ensuring ‘smart metering’ replacing conventional energy meters by prepaid smart meters in the states and UTs over the next 3 years will prove to be a positive step in addressing the financial stress of DISCOMs, if there is 100 percent compliance. This will also give users the right to choose their distributor and decide how much they want to pay. The proposal to create 5 new smart cities with the states on a PPP model and attract Rs 100 lakh crore investment under National Infrastructure Pipeline is also critical to boost overall economic growth. If rolled out well on the back of adequate funding, the NIP will be a potential game changer for the broad economy and have the ability to create lakhs of jobs and revitalize ancillary industries.” Anil Chaudhry, Zone President & Managing Director, Schneider Electric India 10

Sterlite Power Launches High Performance, Ultra Low Sag Carbon Composite Core Conductor: ACCC Ganga ULS

Press Release

• Newly designed HPC solution will transform the way transmission lines are built across long span river crossings and hilly terrains • Installed on longest quad configuration 400kV span across Ganga Sterlite Power, a leading global player in power transmission, has launched a carbon composite core conductor solution that will help utilities overcome their toughest transmission constraints across long span river crossings. ACCC ULS Ganga, a High-Performance Low Sag conductor was developed to address the dual challenge of keeping the sag low, while maintaining the same power transfer capacity of the conductor. The weight of the conductor also remains low, with minimum pressure exerted on the towers. The ACCC Ganga ULS conductor has been successfully deployed on a 400kV Quad line, across river Ganga, connecting North Earthen and Eastern Grids to the National Grid. This is the longest river crossing with a HPC conductor on a 400kV line.

Sterlite Power Launches Low Loss Conductor for Renewable Segment • New product will reduce losses by 40% compared to conventional conductors • Conductor will be cost-effective to help companies achieve emission reduction goals Sterlite Power, a leading global player in power transmission, has developed an innovative solution to drastically reduce losses in the RE segment. The new product is a combination of aluminium conductor, which has least loss as compared to other conventional conductors. The low loss conductor is highly corrosion resistant, has inherent strength and very high concentration of Aluminium in the define daimeter. It can reduce I²R losses in the transmission line by 40% Compared to ACSR Conductor and up to 30% compared to Al59 Conductor. The Bi-Aluminium conductor is environment friendly and helps in reducing carbon emissions. To illustrate the benefit, let’s consider an example of a RE farm with 50 ckm section of 33 kV line

30

“Sterlite Power’s specially designed ACCC ULS Ganga conductor coupled with strong and proven execution capabilities will result in savings of time, space and cost for our customers. This solution eliminates the need for carrying out piling operations for a foundation in the middle of a riverbed,” according to Manish Agarwal, CEO, Solutions Business, Sterlite Power. ACCC Ganga ULS conductor consists of annealed trapezoidal shape aluminium wires stranded on special composite core. This special core has desirable combination of properties like lower weight, CTE (Co-efficient of thermal expansion), high strength and modulus. These factors help it to maintain the required ground clearance. EM

designed to carry 30MW Power with a load factor of 0.3. The use of Sterlite Power’s newly designed Bi-Aluminium 381 sq mm conductor would reduce line losses by 40% compared to an equally sized ACSR Panther conductor. This translates to approximately 1,30,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 30 years. To put this in perspective, this is equivalent to taking approximately 1500 cars off the road. “Technical losses further erode the already wafer-thin margins of IPP producers. Arresting these losses will have a bottom-line impact. The low loss conductor will be hugely advantageous in this regard, “according to Manish Agarwal, CEO, Solutions Business, Sterlite Power. EM

Sterlite Power Signs Technology Agreement with U.S. Based Smart Wires to Bring SmartValveTM to Indian Utilities

Press Release

• Sterlite Power to offer Indian utilities modular power flow control solutions that make transmission grid efficient and flexible • Exclusive arrangement between Sterlite Power and Smart Wires to market the technology in India Sterlite Power, a leading global developer in power transmission, has inked an exclusive agreement with U.S. based Smart Wires to introduce a revolutionary technology for the Indian electric markets that will enable resourceful grid management. This cutting-edge technology is an intelligent ‘valve,’ that will allow utilities to optimally utilise its existing transmission capacity and enhance grid flexibility. Speaking on the technology agreement, Pratik Agarwal, Managing Director, Sterlite Power said, “An environmentally sustainable electricity system is the anchor for a modern society. We are growing at an incredible pace and need to look for innovative solutions for rising grid outages due to climate change, lack of land to build new lines and integration of renewable energy. Modernising the grid to make it ‘smarter’ through the use cutting edge technology is going to disrupt the landscape and technology is going to be the game changer in this field.” Power networks in India have been facing major transmission congestion challenges due to exponential growth in demand for power and rapid urbanisation. Congestion is often seen in sub-transmission lines where it is a challenge to connect renewable power. In this context, alleviating congestion and enhancing grid flexibility becomes critical. Manish Agarwal, CEO, Solutions, Sterlite Power, said, “We are passionate proponents of disruptive technologies that can help our customers meet their energy delivery needs and address

the coinciding challenges of time, space and capital. This technology will enable better power flow, grid stability and enhanced power transfer capacity in existing infrastructure without the need for investment in new lines.” Smart Wires CEO, Gregg Rotenberg, said, “Given the pace and scale of renewable energy growth in India, our solutions can provide immense value to the market. We are thrilled to work with Sterlite because we knew we needed a collaborator who understood the nuances of this market and who could match our passion to transform how electric grids are planned and operated.” Smart Wires a world leader in modular power flow control, has successfully deployed this state-of-the-art technology globally across the US, Europe and Australia. SmartValve increases power transfer capability by making better use of an existing network. As generation and demand changes, circuits can become unequally loaded. Some lines reach their maximum capacity while others are well below their limits. SmartValve technology can unlock this system capacity by more evenly balancing power flows and therefore provides a quicker-to-install and lower-impact alternative to building new lines. It is quick to install and easy to scale or redeploy, providing valuable flexibility given today’s rapidly changing electric system. Based in California, with offices in Ireland and Australia and a global workforce, Smart Wires works with utilities around the world to address the unique challenges they face. EM

The five day congregation saw national and international industry experts and policy makers deliberate upon industry challenges, innovations, and business models through a series of leadership summits and meetings. Also, the premier showcase event hosted world’s largest confluence of power transmission and distribution community at the 5th Reverse Buyers Sellers Meet and Domestic Buyers Sellers Meet. There have been discussions with regard to power sector’s undergoing tectonic shift and 30% of global energy demand to come from India by 2040, said Mr. Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, IAS, JS, Ministry of Power, GoI. The importance of subsidies is discussed. Renewable sector has 17,000 Cr. loans pending to be paid: Mr. Anand Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of New and Non-Renewable Energy, GoI. Since its first edition in 1990, Elecrama 2020 will exclusively focus for the first time on the role of women in the industry, building stronger electrical systems for homes, offices, and industries, and discuss the way forward for complete electrification of railways. Digital technologies, IoT and AI powered electrical systems, and other smart-tech solutions are being showcased at the event. The ELECRAMA was marked by its importance on WOMEN EMPOWERMENT. For the first time, Elecrama creates a platform “Women Empower” to discuss challenges and experiences of women in power segment. Women have to work twice as hard to prove half their worth, said Ms Anjuli Chandra, keynote speaker at the inaugural address of Women Empower Initiative. It is interesting to note that unlike many countries like those of developed countries, India forms a miniscule part in their contribution towards power sector. Developed countries have about 50% women working, while core power sector in India has only 6-7% sector, said Elecrama 2020 Chairman Mr. Anil Saboo. It is mostly a male dominated sector where starting from lower echelons to that of higher echelons there is less presence of women which is often being criticized at various quarters. Elecrama has whole heartedly tried to raise awareness of importance of presence of women in the sector. EM ||www.electricalmirror.net||

Er. P.K.Pattanaik, is presently working with OPTCL as Dy. General Manager (Elect) in E & MR Division, Bhubaneswar- Odisha and associated with the Protection and Control schemes of Electrical systems. He is having 25 years of technical experience in Designing, Testing and Commissioning of Protection Control and operational Schemes, project Implementation, co-ordination, operations & maintenance of Electrical Equipments at various LT/ HT/ EHT level Grid Sub- Stations. He has also published around 70 technical papers in different national/ international seminars/journals. ele.pkpattanaik@optcl.co.in

VARIOUS CASE STUDIES ON OPERATION AND CONTROL SCHEMES FOR GRID SUBSTATION Contd‌.

1. Introduction: For the last few months, the response of the readers to the case studies on various incidents is overwhelming. Hence this month we are again choosing the write up on similar kind of studies for developing the synchronisation of practical observation to the theoretical concepts. The analysis of each incident being supported by actual observations had been described during the situation to add awareness amongst the operation, testing and commissioning engineers to know the cause of problems and be helpful for easy rectification of the problems. This can also help to develop economic schemes for the smooth running of the operation and control system in the Grid Sub-Station. 2.1. Operation of MOG Alarm: During a cold winter it was observed with operation of MOG alarm at a 132/33KV Grid Sub-station. On physical verification also it was found with MOG indicator at empty mark. Observations: 1. This transformer was energized during summer season, on maintaining the process of oil filling to the conservator tank with AIR CELL inside it. 2. The process of maintaining the required pressure had not been considered properly. 36

ELECTRICAL MIR ROR

|| February 2020 ||

3. Hot Oil was allowed to be filled up to the mark of 35 Deg Centigrade on the MOG indicator. 4. The unit was idle charged, stood OK and allowed to be loaded with other transformers in parallel. 5. During operation and loading condition, it was found with no any such abnormality. The air cell was also maintaining required pressure for inhale and exhale air accordingly. But the oil level after filling during operation was found with little lower than that of 35 deg centigrade. 6. The grid personnel on thinking that it is still not empty, for which they were not attempting for filling of the oil. 7. But during the cold winter with further contraction of oil density on lighter loaded transformer situation, the oil level on drastically decrease, resulted with alarm of the MOG with indication of LOW OIL LEVEL.

Action Taken with Analysis: 1. On availing necessary shutdown of the transformer, oil was filled to the mark of 35 degree centigrade on maintain the required pressure with injection of inert gas to the air cell. 2. This time oil was not of hot oil as like done during initial time of energisation, oil had been filled up to 35 deg point mark on MOG. So on subsequent condition, the level went on decreasing and finally during the cold winter the level on decreasing drastically ||www.electricalmirror.net||

resulted with actuation of MOG alarm. Recommendations: 1. For oil filling to the Transformer with AIR CELL, HOT OIL should not be allowed to be filled. 2. The pressure of the air cell has to be maintained and preferably atmospheric temperature oil should be pushed to the level marking of 35 deg centigrade on MOG. 3. In case hot oil pushing, the level should be little more than that of the marking of 35 deg centigrade. 2.2. Difficult in Maintenance of Equipment in Switch yard: At one of the 400/220 KV Grid Sub-Station, heavy induction was resulting to the metal equipment needs to be attended with maintenance work while attending the case during fault rectification or normal maintenance work. ( Case was shared by Er K.K. Murty Ex Chief Engineer MPSEB) Observations: 1. Bus bar system is of TWO main Bus System with no auxiliary bus and equipped with Quad- moose conductor. 2. One day it was required to conduct maintenance work on a pantograph isolator of Bus-2 as shown in the figure. 3. This was resulting with heavy induction during open Condition. 4. The Isolator connected in the system was taken maintenance shut-down with shutting down of associated charged system. 5. The maintenance earth switch linked to this system was also put in the system on either side of the job. 6. To avoid further induction on the system, temporary discharge rod were put on either side of the maintenance job as shown in the figure.

400KV Pantograph Isolator both in OPEN and CLOSED Condition under 400 KV Charged BUS.

Action Taken: 1. On providing all the pre-cautionary steps, when the maintenance job was attended by the working group, for the case of direct touching as shown in the right hand side of the picture, the workman got electric shocking jolt. 2. But when attempted on firm holding the metallic pantograph part, he did not find any further mild jolt as it was during the initial condition. 3. But for innovative thought the work-man was allowed

ELECTRICAL MIR ROR

|| February 2020 ||

to climb with connection of discharge rod to the leg of person. 4. This time the work man did not experience any further mild electric shock and comfortably finished the job of maintenance.

Technical Analysis: 1. The induction phenomenon is always associated to the electrostatic effect due to charge transfer to the metallic conductor if gets surrounded to the equipotential ring of electric field due to High Voltage conductor. 2. Here the charged BUS was above the job needs to be provided for maintenance work. 3. Moreover certain current was also flowing on the charged BUS-Bar. 4. In a simple and fundamental phenomenon, we know that every current carrying conductor acts like a magnet. 5. So this current carrying conductor has also experienced with electromagnetic effect on the surrounding conductor around it. 6. So both electrostatic and electromagnetic effects on the surrounding metallic conductor shall cause certain voltage development due to the effect of equi-potential ring on this metal piece. 7. The effect shall be prominent if remained nearer to the charged conductor. 8. Now during the case, when the work-man without cordoned with earth potential, climbed towards the charged induction zone, was experiencing with mild electric shocking jolt. 9. The moment he started touching the Earthed body (here metal pantograph), with of very immediate transfer of accumulated charged with the workman to the pantograph, certain induction current started to flow from the work-man ||www.electricalmirror.net||

to the metal part. 10. So the work-man experienced with mild shock. 11. But after touching the metal body, if he continues to work with the same no electric shock shall be experienced to him. 12. This is due to the effect that he continued with the same potential connection. 13. In the left hand side case, when the work-man started climbing upward on putting the discharge earth wire on its body, the gradual climbing rise was helping the man to be linked to the discharge of accumulated charge on maintaining equipotential surface. 14. So at the end when the work-man planned to touch the metal body and the same body being at earth potential did not cause any charge transfer from either side. 15. Because both the object (here in this case work-man and other one is the metal body of pantograph). Conclusion The work-man attempted this new concept and completed the job smoothly. 2.3. Magic at Grid Sub-Station: It was observed with sudden tripping of 3 Nos of 33 KV lines and subsequent blowing out of Main DC fuses of all 33 KV system panels at a 220/132/33 Kv Grid Sub-station. Observation: 1. The incident had been resulted with the old grid Sub-stations, equipped with old electromechanical relays with disc movements. 2. It was also provided with analog meters with deflection pointers. 3. At the time of abnormal tripping of these 3 nos of 33 KV lines, the DC main fuses were also blown away simultaneously. 4. The grid personnel attempted of re-fixing of the fuses, but it was observed with blowing of the same. 5. But peculiar observation was found that during re-fixing of the fuses, sudden deflection of the pointer on the analog meters and rotation of the discs were found. 6. So it was decided to hand trip of the 132 KV and 220KV system. 7. But the same could not be done on few of the systems, due to severe fluctuation of DC source and also the AC source. 8. In some of the panels it was found with fluctuation of pointers on the analog meters. 9. So, the total station was decided to be kept outage of the supply. 10. So the incoming feeders at the remote end were hand tripped.

ELECTRICAL MIR ROR

|| February 2020 ||

11. Now it was attempted for searching of the situations of this peculiar fluctuations. 12. Suddenly it was observed with smoke coming out from the PVC pipe trench connected between 132 KV to 33 KV switchyard. 13. So the pipe was opened for the detail investigation of the damage. 14. The damage cables were identified and found with the pipe being provided with CT cables and DC control cables leading to 33 KV switchyard. 15. Few of the cables were found mingled and twisted with each other. 16. This situation was of mixing of DC supply with CT core of few of the 33 KV cables. Action Taken: 1. The damage cables were identified for replacement on immediate basis. 2. Major cables were repaired with use of inter-connecting junction box. 3. Few of the important cables were replaced. 4. All protection and control schemes were checked and problems were rectified. 5. The important feeders were resumed with the supply on availing the power from the remote station. 6. The alternate supply available feeders were diverted to the other adjacent grids. 7. The important systems were revived with continuous attention to the work after 2 hours. 8. On the next phase action, the pipe trench was replaced by open trench with laying of new cables. Analysis: 1. Due to damage of cable sheath, the DC path might have been leaked to earth. 2. But such leakage is not harmful till the other terminal of the DC source has not been suffered with any leakage to earth. 3. In this case the CT cables have also been suffered with damage and DC source has been connected across the CT core causing the driving of current. 4. So the pointer of the analog meters started deflecting along with the rotation of the disc. 5. The 3 nos 33 KV feeders also got tripped. 6. The cause of blowing out of the fuses was due to the short-circuiting of the DC sources. 7. While re-fixing of the fuses, it was also causing the deflection of the analog meters due to merger of the DC source with CT circuit. EM

Q. How’s your experience in Elecrama 2020? How’s Q. What are the challenges available for testing & the footfall you’ve got? Each Elecrama has been better than the previous one, we started in 1990 which was the first edition of Elecrama, and we’ve seen the growth of Elecrama as well as the growth of the country in last 30 years. In this edition the footfall is really good; the numbers of International visitors are also great and the numbers of visitors are increasing year by year.

Q. As people are saying that 2019 is a slow year for

Q. What are the products you’ve showcased in

Elecrama 2020? In every edition of Elecrama we came up with new products, for example last year we’d showcased a solar inverter of 25 Kw and this year we’ve showcased a solar inverter of 50 Kw., last time we had power quality meters and this year we came up with power quality analyzers. In every field we are coming up with new innovations and in all the products which are manufactured in last six months are showcased here and we’ve also launched a 5Kv insulation tester. ||www.electricalmirror.net||

Q. How Rishabh Instruments is maintaining the

balance between quality & pricing of their products? We believe in giving the right quality at right price, we get 100 of customers but probably we are able to convert around 10 as genuine buyers. The people who are only concerned about the pricing may not get attracted to our products, but the one who are already using our products and they know what we provide, they always come back to us as potential buyers. In Test & Measuring instruments, Rishabh is one of the leading companies, there are many companies who are importing from China and selling products here, but we’ve maintained our market and a good clientele so we don’t need to worry much.

www.rishabh.co.in

every industry, what are your views on that? 2019 was a slow year for some industries like automobile and other, but for us it was good. In 2019 we did an acquisition in China which is now operational, we are expanding in Nashik by adding an area of around 4,000 sq. mtr., we are increasing our product basket with new innovations. I think people who are innovating, growing and coming up with new products are not complaining about the slowdown, but the people who only want to stay with the old products and technology are complaining. There are some industries which were growing previously but now there is some shrinkage in their business. In simple context we can say if the GDP is growing at 5 per cent then there are sectors which are growing. For instance, if we take the electrical sector, the people who are using analog meters are no longer using these meters, they directly take the readings and convert them in digital form and then they take the required actions, therefore the analog meter business is shrinking. There were issues in the growth of industries but as a company we see a good growth for us as the infrastructure and power sector is growing.

measuring instruments industry? The biggest challenge available is customer’s cautiousness about safety, people are always going after price and in that process they compromise with the quality of the product and safety of the equipment user. We should ban using materials which are not UL listed, but in India there is no such law to ban cheap material. Many manufacturers are using cheap plastic material for manufacturing products and competing with the people who are using a good quality product for manufacturing, they sell for low price and this creates an unhealthy competition in the market. Secondly, the lack of skilled workers and operators is also a challenge available in the industry; the innovation comes when one is ready to do a good amount of work to find something new and to think out of the box. These are the two major challenges we see for the market and as far as the government is concerned I think they are doing their best and we can’t ask for more.

Q. What are the different markets catered by Rishabh

Instruments? The products manufactured by Rishabh in India are mostly for export and if you look at the whole Rishabh Group turnover probably 75 per cent of the products are sold out of the Indian market. We’ve our own sales and marketing team in USA, UK, Poland, recently we bought a company in China and with all this we’ve grown at a global level but our roots are in Nashik, India.

women in industry and women are coming with technical talent. What are your views on this topic? In Rishabh we’ve employed more women than men. There is a lot of talent in rural areas and we need to harness that talent by providing them the medium to come out and to show what they have. In our company three departments are headed by women and we’re working to make a proper balance. If we talk about percentage we’ve got 60 per cent women employees in our organisation.

Q. What are your expectations from budget 2020?

Simplification in reforms is the first thing which is required. Today, we’ve come forward from the License Permit Raj but

ELECTRICAL MIR ROR

still there are many issues like ton of paperwork etc. For instance we import around 1,000 consignments, for every singly consignment we’ve to give each and every detail again & again, in this process we get away from our actual business. There should be simplification in the policies, secondly they should stop changing the rate of taxes in short spans, there should be only two rates one high and one low so that the ease of doing business can be accomplished. Last but not the least, a proper channel of taxation and legal work is much required in the country, there are many tax disputes but the resolution takes a lot of time. Business needs quick decision making so there should be an authority which can resolve the issues in a particular time. EM

Q. Please enlighten us about MIDEL in India.

Q. What are your views on the present scenario of Indian Q. What are your plans for 2020? power sector? The Indian power market is at an interesting crossroads. With urbanization continuing to be a large topic, integration of renewables into the energy mix, and of course the anticipated take-up of electric vehicles, it the market is presented with significant new challenges. Utility providers are becoming increasingly aware of the consequences of specifying certain insulating materials on India’s transformer fleet and its resiliency, and the differences that can mean in the event of a failure. With more urban substations, minimizing the threat to human life of transformer fires is absolutely critical; reducing harm to eth environment with greener materials is growing also; those technical differences are beginning to mean much more than they once did. By specifying fire safe fluids for transformers, MIDEL significantly reduces the impact on the environment while simultaneously cutting the risk of transformer fire, and this offers many operational benefits like reduced maintenance and improved business continuity. MIDEL is focused on making fire resistant fluids for transformers and we hope that the specifying a particular fluid will help not just the utilities but Indian manufacturers in the commercial and industrial sectors.

Q. What are the different markets catered by MIDEL?

How India is different from others?

That MIDEL has both natural and synthetic esters, which are proven in over 70 countries around the world. Moreover, in being the first ester manufacturer in India, both our experience of India and our contribution to the Indian power sector in terms of improving fire safety is unrivalled. Speaking more generally, the Indian market is very cautious about the products they are buying, which is good lots of ways because it tells us that new materials are not integrated without being proven first. There can be a downside to that in terms of slower adoption of “newer” technologies, even if

||www.electricalmirror.net||

In light of the obvious benefits of natural and synthetic ester, a good number of key utilities in India have started to specify ester technology for both distribution & large power transformers, so now is the time to push on. There is another interest in consideration to specify a particular type of ester for use – not all esters are equal, of course, which is why we offer a proven and trusted range. We don’t have one solution for multiple needs, we have a range – drawing on the differences requires expertise and credibility which has led many OEMs and utilities around the world to reap the benefits of working with MIDEL. Our mission in India is to make sure that utilities, OEMs and end users make the right engineering choice in selecting their insulating liquid – there are applications for which our experience tells us natural ester might not be the right choice, and vice versa. We are constantly collaborating with utilities to this effect, making sure that they are, firstly, aware of the differences and secondly, have the confidence to select the right product for the job.

www.mimaterials.com

MIDEL is a range of synthetic and natural esters transformer dielectric fluids. Our journey here first started in 2009 as the first ester manufacturer to bring the concept of safer, greener and reliable fluids for transformers to India. Since then we’ve enjoyed an interesting journey and we are now recognized by the BIS. Throughout this journey we’d supported many utilities & transformer owners. Also, M&I Materials has opened a new MIDEL ester transformer fluid manufacturing plant and state-of-the-art laboratory near Mumbai, in 2019.

they have been recognized for years else where in the world. In recent times we have been seeing some really encouraging signs for the progression of ester technology and not just in India. For example we are doing a pilot project of 400KV level transformer with MIDEL Transformers in Europe which we’ll launch in next 12-18 months. In India, we are slightly behind from Europe in terms of deployment of MIDEL transformers but progress is being made where esters are specified, with a preference for MIDEL. We are doing a lot of planning and engineering for new technology and now we need to move at the implementation phase of it, to help the Indian power sector.

Q. Please tell us about your Research & Development facility.

Our organization is headquartered in United Kingdom, where all our principle chemists & electrical R&D engineers work. As an ester specialist we continue to innovate and evaluate new products, in addition to that we also work with external institutes such as universities, power research institutes, etc. as well as OEMs. We have a rich heritage of influencing and informing standards and institutes such as IEEE, ICDL and CIGRÉ, and our position of authority on the subject of esters helps to bring our development work to the wider market. We are very much looking forward to the future and we keep designing and innovating new products to meet the needs of the market. EM

Q. Delta is a technology driven company, so what are the latest innovations you’ve showcased in Elecrama 2020?

Delta is a global leader in terms of energy efficient solutions and our Communication & Information Solutions division has showcased our latest technologies like Lithium-ion batteries. Delta is also the largest ODM of lithium-ion batteries; globally everybody is looking forward to convert VRLA to lithium-ion solutions for data centres and other applications. We have also launched our new UPS system which is 2nd Generation DPS 600 KW UPS. This UPS is very compact in footprint and suitable for industrial applications and data centers. Apart from these two, we’ve also introduced our bi-directional backup power solution. We’ve showcased 300 kW bi-directional backup power UPS solution which is engineered in India, specifically for heavy duty applications.

Q. As people say India is a price sensitive market, how Delta is maintaining the balance between price & quality of its products?

Every product has its specific market and I would not mark India as a price sensitive market, I would rather say that Indians are very smart buyers. At Delta, we do a lot of engineering and R&D to create value products and in this process price comes next. For example, our UPS technology is most compact & redundant in nature so that gives customers a value and along with that we also keep our pricing competitive in the market. We are providing best quality and a suitable pricing.

Q. Please enlighten us about your R&D facility.

Delta is globally at number one position in switching power supplies and also in DC brushless fans. Our growth has been very constant since our beginning in 1971; today we spend 6-8% of our revenue in Research & Development (R&D) so that we can introduce best technology and innovations with us. Delta is more focused towards R&D, so all our products are kept in mind by understanding the future requirements of the industry and in order to accomplish this we work with our clients to understand their needs. Today, we have one of the most energy efficient products and our R&D team is working to innovate new technology.

Q. What are the sustainable practices opted by Delta to help the environment?

Delta creates green solutions along with the implementation of green initiatives within our facilities. All our facilities or factories are LEED certified green buildings including our Gurgaon corporate office which is Platinum LEED certified and our Rudrapur plant is Gold LEED certified. We are doing a lot of work to introduce new green technologies in the market and in order to that our main push is on the EV charging infrastructure, then solar inverters and many more green solutions. future as well because every industry is going for automation and digitalization.

Q. What are your views on 2019 slowdown?

Delta has seen growth in 2019, though the industry was slow but still we registered a good growth and it is a positive sign for us. The major market that got affected from slowdown was IT but the market which complimentary grew was the data center market and as our business is more towards data centre perspective so we did well. Q. What KRYFS is all about?

Q. Who are your main customers?

Most of our customers are multinational companies’ and large public listed companies like ABB, Siemens, BHEL, T&R, Bharat Bijlee, Tata Projects and L&T etc. We’ve been in this business for over 28 years and have built a business based on customer trust and satisfaction.

Yes, absolutely women should be a part of our workforce. At our head office in Mumbai, we have a gender diversity ratio of 40%

||www.electricalmirror.net||

Q. What are your expectations from

Budget-2020?

My expectation from Budget-2020, like everyone else’s is that the government should definitely look at reviving the economic activity. India is going through this slowdownand I think one of the reasons of this slowdown is the liquidity crunch; because the banks are not lending and that’s hampering the flow of money through the entire system. Another big reason is the government (especially the state governments) are unable to pay its dues on time and expects industry to pay our dues on times to MSME’s, within 45 days, which is very strange. If we don’t receive money from the government or our customers on time, how do we pay our vendors on time. At the same time because of so many bankruptcies under the NCLT law it’s evident that the trust in the economy between businesses has gone down substantially. Earlier, when we were giving credit to a particular company A, B or C, we trusted the companies more. Today, when we give credit to companies we are always worried whether the we will be paid or not. So, you reduce the credit and when you reduce the credit the customer’s working capital cycle gets disturbed, they are able to do less so they will supply less goods to their customers and therefore, the cycle goes on and ultimately the economic activity comes down. I feel that the budget should increase

the trust in the economy by assuring people that genuine mistakes which are made in business will not be considered as frauds or intentional. I think promoters will have much more confidence to take risk if they have less fear. Today there is an atmosphere of fear in the entire system and many entrepreneurs feel that if they take a wrong decision they would be in trouble and therefore most are risk averse. Whenever, there is high amount of fear there is very low trust and wherever there is low trust there is always slow economic activity. So, government has to bring down the fear, increase the trust and thereby increase the economic activity in the country.

Q. What were your expectations from Elecrama-2020? Is there any product launch from your side?

I think this is the 8th or 9th Elecrama we are participating in from last 16 to 18 years and it’s a great meeting place for everyone. We meet customers, suppliers, people, and friends from the industry. We’ve designed our stall with the concept of 3R’s Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. So, all the material which is seen in our stall is recycled material or reusable including the partition which is from recycled board and even the nails. At this Elecrama, we’ve launched an IOT enabled remote distribution transformer monitoring app which is called BOLA (Better Operation and life by Analytics). Any distribution utility company can really look at the lacs of transformers which they have on the field into which they currently don’t have any inside into regarding the theft of electricity or their condition. When they install BOLA in their transformer, they will be able to have complete transparency, more uptime and therefore better revenues by condition based maitainence rather than time based maintaience.

www.kryfs.com

KRYFS Power Components is all about putting values above business. We can talk about our work but more importantly a company has to be built on certain values. We have clearly defined our 7H values which are Honesty, Humility, Helpful Nature, Humanitarian Approach, Hard work, Happy outlook and Hamesha Kaizen(Kaizen is Japanese word because we have an investment from Toyota Tsusho, Japan) which means always improving. So, Kryfs is all about always improving. As far as our business is concerned, we are India’s largest transformer lamination and core manufacturing company (up to 765 KV class) and we have a capacity of more than 50,000metric tonnes per annum. We are the largest importer of CRGO which is (Cold-Rolled Grain-Oriented electrical steel sheets and this is used in manufacturing of transformers). Besides that we are also the largest manufacturer of large transformer up to 765KV class. I believe we are the only company in the world who have this capability (of making both laminations and tanks upto 765 KV class transformers) Besides tanks and laminations we also do core assemblies, core coil assemblies, EPC projects (with current projects in Bihar, Haryana and Rajasthan). We also make Amorphous Core for distribution transformers solar rooftop and we also supply components to railways. We export our products to more than 40 countries all over the world.

and we want to make that 50-50. I have two daughters myself and therefore, I think women are better than men in many respects like emotional intelligence, more patient, and more intuitive than men. Unfortunately, we are now living in a man’s world today but I hope that changes over a period of time because the kind of experience women go through from child birth to bringing up children to imparting values to our children, is something a man can never experience. If a woman can bring up a child, a woman can definitely be a part of any company and make it prosper. A company which has a balance between men and women staff will definitely attain a balance in their approach to environment, be more considerate towards its employees and have a better understanding ofcustomer needs.

Q. What are your plans for 2020?

My plan for 2020 is to enjoy life because there is no point to taking stress, when things are out of your control. We do what we can (our karma) and don’t worry about the result. This is what I learnt from Gita saar and it is my basic philosophy of life. EM

In our own factory in India, women constitute nearly one third of our blue-collar work force and we do find that they are better than the male workers in few important areas. On the white-collar front we currently don’t have as many women as we would wish to have and hope to hire more in years to come.

Instead of use of salt and charcoal as back filling material, mixture of various natural minerals by some manufacturer was started to sale as back filling compound which was coming in bag packing which slowly known as chemical bag and then over the time whole system called as chemical earthing system. It is true it is not its technical name but in last ten years users and traders has given this name.

Q. Why proper care should be given in selection of chemical

earthing system ?

Earthing role comes into picture when earth fault occurs, otherwise it remain silent. Hence if not selected properly, cheaper earthing system may cause either fatal accident or heavy damage like fire caused due to non-tripping or delayed tripping of relays and circuit breaker.

Q. If my earthing gives good resistance value when I installed, is it not sufficient ?

Good resistance value can be achieved even with the use of any metal pipe ||www.electricalmirror.net||

and filling salt and charcoal surrounding to that metal pipe. Achieving good resistance value is necessary condition for all kind of earthing whether it is conventional earthing or chemical earthing but more important is to maintain less fluctuation in resistance value, longer life of earthing system and reliability of earthing system in tripping or relays as earth fault may occur in one year of installation or may occur ten year after installation but once it occur relay has to trip in designed time. At present some of chemical earthing manufacturer who sales chemical earthing at very low price mixes salt and fine coal powder in back filling compound and hence initially resistance value are achieved but as salt and coal powder leads to corrosion and hence in few year the life of earthing system get finished.

System?

E- Link Advanced Earthing System contain two components : 1. E - Link Dual Electrode Technology Earthing Electrode 2. Earth Conductivity Improvement Material-ECIM Dual Electrode Technology consist Outer electrode and Inner electrode. Hot Dip Galvanized B class Mild Steel Pipe or Copper Bonded Mild steel Pipe is used as Outer Electrode and Hot Dip Galvanized Mild Steel Strip or Copper Bonded Mild Steel Strip inserted inside the pipe electrode to the full length from top to bottom is used as Inner Electrode. E Link Copper Bonded Electrode are made by high quality molecularity bonding pure electrolytic copper (99.9%) with low carbon and high tensile steel. Special highly conductive and non corrosive material is pressurized filled between the Outer and Inner Electrode which safeguard the electrode getting corrode over a long period of time under the soil. Thus even if the outer electrode is corrodes after some years, Inner Electrode remains intact which increases the life of Earthing System. E-Link Enterprise has developed special Earth Conductivity Improvement Material ( ECIM ) which is used as Back Fill Material around the Earth Electrode which enhances the soil conductivity in excellent way. It swells considerably when mixed with water and retain ||www.electricalmirror.net||

Q

. What should be taken care while purchasing good chemical earthing system ? It is fact that there are number of chemical earthing systems available in market which are sold purely on price basis and hence day by day in the competition of making product cheaper, performance of product is compromised. While selecting dual earthing electrode technology based chemical earthing, one should ensure that outer pipe is of ISI marked, minimum B class pipe for heavy wall thickness, heavy size inner strip which not only ensure proper fault current handling capacity but also ensure longer life of overall system. The gap between outer pipe and inner strip must be filled with highly conductive material having self-resistivity less than 0.13 ohm mtr or near to it while in cheaper product the value of this resistivity lies above 30 ohm mtr. For saving the cost, cheaper earth electrode does not insert inner strip in full length till bottom and their inner strip are not welded at bottom. All these factor affect performance of the product in fault condition and it fails in protecting the human and equipment. We have explained these things in our technical brochure in details.

Q. Would you like to share with us the

special features of your product and its advantages and benefits?

Our products are tested and certified by ERDA and CPRI. We use ISI marked Standard Pipe having heavy wall thickness used as Outer Electrode and highly conductive and non-corrosive material used as Filling Material inside the Pipe having self-resistivity value less than 0.13 ohm mtr which increases the life of

the earthing system. Outer Electrode and Inner Electrode are welded at Top and Bottom Both side so that continual and uniform distribution of fault current is achieved.

Q. What are the new products that you are showcasing in this Elecrama?

Earthing Chamber and ECIM Super , these two are new products we are showcasing in this ELECRAMA. Earthing chamber we have displayed which design is registered by Patent Office and it has been highly appreciated by our client. The specially of the Earthing Chamber is its hinged door design make it anti theft, its square shape make its architect friendly, sticker pasted on top provides onsite data recording facility, light weight makes its transportation easy and its top cover is tested for 5 Ton linear load pressure test. ECIM Super is Earth Back Fill Compound which is manufactured as per IEC Standard. The resistivity value of ECIM in dry condition and in wet set condition remains less than 0.12 ohm mtr. It has passed all test like leaching test, resistivity test, sulphur content test and corrosion resistant test as per IEC.

Q. What are the challenges in Earthing business ?

There are many challenges in this industry. The first most important challenge is transforming customer mind from price to specification. We are working on educating customer about what should be the specification of earthing however lots to be done in this area. Another challenge is that there are many manufactures of chemical earthing system but problems lies in presence of genuine manufacturers, many manufacturer for increasing sales provide poor specification product at cheap price. Thirdly is there is issue of lack of high technology for testing of earthing product in the country. Like corrosion testing as per IEC standard done by very limited laboratory.

water for long time. This improves bonding between soil and Earth Electrode which is crucial part in earthing. It maintains moisture surrounding to the Earth Electrode. There is no need to recharge the earth pit in normal type of soil. Unlike salt, ECIM is insoluble in water and hence does not wash out during rain. It is corrosion resistive. ECIM is soil friendly and environment friendly material. E-Link Enterprise also manufacture cu boned solid rod and HDGI solid rod.

Interview

POST Special Issue 2020

Charanjeet singh Founder

Inter-Tech

I

nterTech has established goodwill and a feeling of trust amongst it’s clients which makes it different from other companies that are operational in the electrical earthing industry. The company is instrumental in catering to all kinds of electrical earthing application of railways, industrial complexes, gas, power stations, electrical systems and water plants etc.

,,

,,

Q. Can you brief us about your company.

Inter Tech has been a reputed name in the earthing industry and has served a long list of clients who are completely satisfied with the technical competitiveness of the company. Marconite, Conductive concrete aggregate offered for the earthing needs has become a pioneer product in the industry. The company has served many prestigious clients such as Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, L&T Simplicity Engineers, Cement Corporation of India , MES Delhi Zone , New Delhi Municipal Council , Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, National Fertilizer LTD and more. Inter Tech introduced Marconite conductive aggregate in 2011 , through a joint development and research that was conducted at the beginning of the seventies by PMC & Guglielmo Marconi’s Marcony Company Ltd. Being the only corrosion free solution, zero maintenance requirements, it is the only product which can offer permanent stable solution for a longer duration as long as 50 years. We have channel partners across India to cater 80

the needs across Pan India. So far, we have installed more than 30,000 electrodes across Pan india.

Q. What is your vision?

Our vision is to promote Surakshit Bharat to save the precious lives which we are loosing on account of poor earthing and through our efforts we are trying to build a safer India. Our sincere efforts for spreading the awareness for the earthing needs and its design needs has been much supported by Fire safety association of India, Council of Architects, Indian Green building council and various industrial associations and prestigious MEP consultants of the country.

Q. Is earthing a standard solution?

Can insurance premium be a standard premium for a 10 year old child and 65 year old gentleman?? No, it can not be. As insurance premium is not a standard solution for the different age people, and the premium varies too as per the insurance cover requirement. Similarly, Earthing is not a standard ||www.electricalmirror.net||

solution. A single rod of 3 meter is a misguided standard solution prevailing in the industry. Earthing design varies as per the Soil resistivity of the site. For an example, a site having soil resistivity of 10hm-m would require a different solution as compared to a site having 65 ohm-m soil resistivity. Poor standard solution prevailing in the industry has caused many precious lives. It is very sad to note that in India 13 lives are lost every day on account of electrocution whereas for UK, this number is 8 for the whole year. This is a heart breaking reality for a country like India.

Q. What are the design needs of earthing solution.

Q. What is special about Marconite ?

Reason of failure of any earthing electrode is only and only “Corrosion”. Be it conventional earthing or chemical earthing, they get corrode and their performance becomes unstable. Within few years, electrode is lost due to the corrosion. Marconite earthing system, the only “Corrosion free” solution is an advanced conductive concrete aggregate that provides permanent, stable as well as low resistance earthing solutions that are workable in several complex ground conditions. It enables the electrical engineers to get a stable, permanent and low resistance earthing solutions that help the engineers handle the most complex soil conditions and get right earthing solutions across the world. Marconite is manufactured in an extremely careful manner by the specialists and is packed in UV resistant value topped poly ||www.electricalmirror.net||

Q.

How this technology is replacing conventional technology. So would say it is better than chemical earthing?

Every year, several people risk their lives due to improper earthing system. So much concern is being raised on the dangerous impacts of chemical earthing that a strong urge to introduce a new earthing system is felt. Marconite earthing, the new system by Inter Tech is much safer and beneficial as compared to chemical earthing. In chemical earthing, several chemicals such as Bentonite, charcoal and salt deeply impact the sub soil of the location of earthing through leaching as well as polluting water tables. Marconite Earthing is in complete sync with your earthing needs as it has low resistivity. Other features are versality, high strength, chemically inert and easy to use. Thus in short, Marconite is better than Chemical Earthing. Lots of accidents can be prevented if we avoid usage of newer technology in earthing solutions.

Q. Brief us about the earthing market in India.

Well, our experience with the industry has been an eye opener for us. A decade ago, seeing the kind of earthing solutions which were getting used in India, we did think to bring Marconite to India and we brought it in 2011. Earthing being treated as a standard solution challenged us for convincing the need of correct design and soil resistivity test and on top of that higher cost of the marconite (Laughingly, although, it costs much less in the life span of 50 years), it was a difficult beginning. Our experience in last one decade has taught us that earthing is a completely neglected subject. It is surprising that people are conscious about living a luxurious life but however there is little or no awareness about importance of earthing in their home or factories or institutes. They will wke up only once some accident or fatal fault happens. Also. we are spreading more awareness for the design needs of the earthing, and earthing cant be a standard design.Slowly but steadily both awareness and consciousness has been raised amongst people but it has to gain it’s momentum. We hope more people will join us in our mission “Surakshit Bharat” which is to safeguard more lives. EM

Earthing solution is a matter of design. It cannot be standard. Let us understand with the easier analogy of the Insurance solution Before offering a solution to you, an insurance advisor would ask you 2 basic questions A) What is your age B) What cover you are looking for. Keeping the insurance analogy, an Earthing designer would ask you 2 questions A) what is your soil resistivity B) What earth resistance you require? Now, the next question is why do you want to measure the soil resistivity as all the electrodes go below the ground. It is important to know Why? Earth is not uniform throughout. Every place has different terrains, moisture level and water tables. Soil resistivity test determines the resistive capacity of the soil to accept the fault current. For example rock soils are more resistive as compared to the soft soil. Therefore, earthing solution for the Rock soil would be different from soft soil. For instance , for soft soil, 3 metre to meet 1 Ohm but in some rocky place 30 metres rod might be used to meet 1 ohm requirement. Now question arises, what ohmic value do we need for the earth electrode. The answer lies in the kind of application and voltage levels of the system.

sacks and palletized. Marconite earth electrodes have a better track record and are utilized for important earthing solutions to a variety of soils. USP of the Marconite is that it can perform in the rocky soils where no other earthing material performs. That is why it is said (where other earthing fails, people rely upon Marconite)

Q. What are some of the highlights of RenewX 2020? How will it be different from previous editions?

The forthcoming 5th edition of RenewX 2020 has so much to offer to the sector. A congregation of leading 150 + Exhibitors, 7,000 + Trade Visitors representing captive industries, Chinese Pavilion, Launch of whitepapers and sector reports, Skill Competition on the floor, Rich technical conference sessions focusing on AgroPV, Rooftop Solar, Solar Pumping Solutions, CEO Conclave powered by World Bank / E&Y and Bio Energy sessions are destined to enrich the knowledge landscape of the participants. Very compact and closely knit environment will make business happen at ease.

Q. What are some of the new and emerging challenges for the renewable?

The RE sector currently stands at the cusp of yet another era of explosive growth. The mandate, and approach, of the Government is clearer than ever before with the magnitude of tenders being announced telling the story. However few of the key challenges that glare this sector for quite some time now are: Continuous shrinking margins of the developers, thus, stressing the bottom-lines of many corporates, Tariff caps currently in place, thus, demotivating developers to bid for Govt projects, Expanding the net of BIS certification & Safeguard duties on multiple components that’s not only expensive, but, time consuming as well. This puts entire value chain @ strain, thus, impacting elasticity of the market. Top of all challenges is de-clotting of payment pipeline by state

Discoms i.e. improving financial health of power distribution companies. Another critical challenge is ensuring quality quotient of the modules in long run i.e. to continue deriving more power per WP. This needs technological innovations of designing & improvising module layout. Not too far is yet another challenge that glares this sector and would need redressal is the Disposal of modules in environmentally friendly way.

Q

. What are the most promising and emerging technologies which would be most relevant for meeting future renewable requirements? I handpick bi-facial modules in addition to Solar + Storage solutions that’d be most relevant for meeting requirements. Also Electric Vehicles + Solarised Charging stations will embark upon new era of energy revolution. Floating Solar & Agro PV (Being newer applications though!!) will open up yet another horizon of mass consumption of Solar energy in our lives.

Q. What is your message to your exhibitors and to end users who look forward to visiting RenewX 2020 event?

My message to all participating stakeholders @ RenewX 2020 is to leverage the 2-days of intense business opportunities to the maximum, network with domain experts, generate business leads, learn new technologies, recent product developments trending RE sector these days and newer applications that have potential to contribute to the growth story of the region. Enjoy, Appreciate and go home richer in knowledge and connections established.

Mecc Alte - A World Leader for Alternator Solutions

www.meccalte.com

Mecc Alte is a global leader in providing Industrial Alternator solutions. They have 4 manufacturing units located in Italy, the UK, China and India. Each facility is dedicated towards the production of world-class Alternators, with complete manufacturing in Mecc Alte SpA and Mecc Alte Power Products in Italy (1 – 5,000kVA), Mecc Alte UK in Great Britain (1 – 3,000kVA), Mecc Alte Haimen in China (7.5 – 3,000kVA) and Mecc Alte India in Pune, India (6.5 – 750kVA). Talking about Elecrama 2020 & Mecc Alte India’s future expansion plans Mr. Shashwata Dutta, Managing Director, Mecc Alte, shared his views. He said, “Elecrama is a frontier exhibition in its category and the entire industry looks forward to this. In this kind of competitive industrial situation, everyone is looking for newer Shashwata Dutta raw material sources, vendors, and Elecrama is a great platform to meet different people.” Managing Director Mr. Dutta said, “We had a fairly steady performance in 2019 and were able to manage the Mecc Alte slowdown with minimal impact. We encountered a month or two of sluggishness but now we are looking forward to robust demand in the coming months of 2020. Indian industry is going through a phase of transition in many segments and that is the reason for such temporary blips. For instance the automobile industry is moving towards EV and this will create new opportunities for us. The power sector is moving towards greener energy which could open up some new segments. We are also going to introduce our new range of value added accessories such as Battery Chargers, Genset Controllers and Engine Controllers. Last year the government reduced the corporate tax which was a big move. We can’t expect much more from the government apart from reducing the cost of funds and providing the infrastructure. The real demand for industrial products comes through infrastructure projects and government is giving immense focus on infrastructure already, so we can expect a good growth in coming future.” “Mecc Alte is a world leader in its segment; we are the largest independent manufacturer of industrial alternators. We make Industrial Alternators from 5Kva to 750 kVA in India. For higher kVA upto 5000kVA we source the product from our Group companies. With this we offer a complete range of alternators. In India we started about 10 years back and till now we’ve got around 16-17 percent of market share by displacing the older players. Achieving this kind of share shows the quality of product we sell. We have to maintain a good balance between price and quality to offer the maximum value to our clients. If we talk about Indian market, the pressure on price is much higher as compared to the European market. We are maintaining the right balance between these factors and this is shown by our growing market presence”, he further added. “Mr. Sameer Wagh, Sr. GM Sales elaborated that, Mecc Alte offers the widest range Alternator right from 1 kVA to 5000 kVA in LV, MV & HV. Now Indian customer have the choice of Mecc Alte’s entire range from 1 kVA to 5000 kVA either manufactured in India or imported from Mecc Alte Europe or China. Mecc Alte India completes 10 years of its inauguration in April 2020, Mr. Wagh has been with Mecc Alte India since its inception and mentioned that in last 10 years Mecc Alte’s steady growth, is due its ability to attract and retain Customers on the strengths of its Unique Product features, Technological superiority, Reliability, Customer relations and response.” EM

The company manufactures a wide range of specialized cables including Fire Survival Cables, Silicon Rubber, Railway Jelly Filled Quad Cables, Fieldbus Cables, Eurobalise Railway Safety Cables, Solar PV Cables, Low Smoke Halogen Free Cables & many more. About 81% of its sales are contributed by Instrumentation & Control Cables. CORDS has been able to build a niche for itself in the specialized cables segment through constant innovations and for the same the company has an in house Research & Development team which focuses on innovation and development of specialized cables on a consistent basis. Its clientele encompasses names including all Metro rails, ONGC, IOCL, Cairn, BPCL, HPCL, Technip, L&T, NTPC Alstom, Bombardier, etc. on the domestic front and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Samsung Engineering, Saudi Electric Supply Company, Petroleum Development Oman, etc. on the international front. About 95% of its orders continue to be customised as per client specifications. While talking about Elecrama 2020 and of CORDS, Mr. Naveen Sawhney, Managing Director, Cords Cable Industries Ltd. shared his views & outlook about the company.

He said, “The experience at Elecrama 2020 was encouraging; it is a platform where you get a chance to showcase your varied product portfolio and also meet different people from the Electricals and Wires & Cables industry. We are in the business of Low Tension instrumentation, control, power and various speciality cables. The interest shown by a range of domestic as well as overseas participants (Prospective buyers) in Elecrama presents a plethora of opportunities for us. CORDS has been regularly participating in this event since a long time now.” Mr. Sawhney further added, “We are currently catering to various sectors such as Oil & Gas, LPG, Refineries, Renewable, Nuclear & Thermal Power, Chemicals, Cement, Metals, Fertilizers, Water, Sewage treatment, Building Automation business, etc. We were able to maintain a healthy growth of 15-18 per cent in 2019. The demand for Cables is expected to increase in the coming times with increased focus on automation in manufacturing and processing in order to monitor and control quality, increasing capex across industries and government’s push towards infrastructure development. CORDS is enlisted as an approved vendor with all of the aforementioned industry segments, which offer lucrative opportunities and we are expecting a good share of business from these sectors in the future. We see ample opportunities for company’s further business growth especially from Metro rails, Dedicated Freight Corridors, Railways, Airport Modernization & Development, Defence, Exports & Sales through dealer network. These opportunities are further strengthened through the recent approvals the company has already got in place from RDSO (Research Design & Standards Organization) under Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India & from AAI (Airports Authority of India) under Ministry of Civil Aviation, Govt. of India, apart from approvals received from Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Samsung Engineering and many others. On aviation, one hundred more airports would be developed by 2024 to support the Udaan scheme. On railways, the opportunities are further enlarged in Networking decongestion, network expansion (including electrification) and high-speed rail. Government also increased its budget outlay for railways to Rs. 1.5 Trillion in 2019. The Metro rail ||www.electricalmirror.net||

segment is likely to get Rs. 196bn worth of support in FY21 compared with Rs. 182bn in FY20 and Rs. 144bn in FY19. Further, it gives me great pleasure to say that we have made supplies of speciality cables to almost every Metro rail project in the country. Currently about 10 to 15 metro projects are underway in the country and are at different phases of construction. Apart from all this, we also cater to Indian Railways and expect to garner a good share of business from various projects. On water, the govt. has laid down Jal Jeevan Mission. Under which, it aims to provide piped water supply to all households; the government has approved Rs 3.6tn for this Mission. During FY21, the scheme gets a budget of Rs 115bn. We expect a boost in the demand for cables used in water desalination process. There are huge investments happening in the Hydrocarbons sector. Many refineries are expanding whilst the government also proposes to expand the national gas grid from 16,200km at present to 27,000km. The segment has a well-stocked pipeline through to FY25 because of 450GW target visibility. We expect to bag incremental business from this sector. Apart from this, government has also made considerable focus on development of Smart cities across the country. The government has proposed to develop five new smart cities in collaboration with states on the PPP mode. Total outlay for Smart Cities will be Rs. 65bn in FY20 against ~Rs. 35bn in FY20. Demand for cables including demand for cables for building automation is expected to get a boost. In addition to our domestic business, CORDS has supplied cables to more than 40 countries in the past. Recently, we received approvals from global majors like ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), Samsung Engineering, among others. We have renewed our focus on the exports business and see greater opportunities from the Middle East, especially from the Gulf Cooperation Council Member states, Africa, Europe & Far East. This segment contributed in lower single digit in FY19, but we see its share going up to over double digits in FY20.” With this coupled with continued investments happening in our key customer segments we do expect to continue our robust performance in the future as well., he further added. Visit our website www.bedmutha. com Mr. Vijay Vedmutha, CMD, Bedmutha Industries Ltd. has shared his views about Budget-2020 and future plans for the company. He said, “Budget 2020 has to be really a friendly budget supporting the industry. Government has to look at the Industrialist and the Entrepreneurs not from the suspicious angle, but rather support them, that is what is expected from budget this time. Budget has to support to increase the demand in the market.”

www.bedmutha.com

We are not mainly into infrastructure project segments but yes we have one division where we are into EPC contracting business also. We have done 200 crores worth of EPC contract for M.P. Jabalpur sector and also done work in Bihar & Maharashtra. These are the few milestones which we had achieved in the EPC contracting business, remaining for wire & copper business mostly products goes to the end users. The whole economy is passing through slowdown and liquidity crunch. The biggest debtor is the government sector, if the money is released in timely manner by the government, this will give momentum to all levels of economy and will help to relieve stress in the economy and the financial sector too. “We are expecting government’s support for the industries and demand has to come up. Basically what I feel that the slowness is just because of demand, the government should start spending in a real sense by releasing money, only then the capital cycle will start and economy will come up, upcoming budget has to be supportive from that perspective. If government is really aiming for 5 trillion dollar economy by 2025 then, this is a time, things have to start moving, he further added. EM

Reliable Fans for Transformer Cooling Application

T

o ensure a reliable electricity supply, Power Transformers play a key role in the society and its infrastructure. This kind of system can be found in power plants and in the electricity grid in substations. During operation of typically oil immersed transformers, losses occur in the tank and generate heat. These are concentrated in what is known as hot spots in the winding and significantly inhibit the service life of the transformer. Overheating of the winding would bring the system to a stop, which could result in a “blackout”. According to studies by the University of Stuttgart, the service life of a transformer is reduced by a factor of 2 if the hot spot temperature increases by just 6 K. For decades mainly, axial flow fans have proved effective for use with powerful air-cooled transformers by using radiators or oil-coolers. On a first view cooling seems simple. The hot oil (top oil temperature) flow by “natural” convection in an external radiator. The radiator basically is “naturally air cooled”, which is based on convection and radiation. This type of transformer is called ONAN (Oil Natural Air Natural). But Transformers with high power density and / or high ambient temperatures the heat dissipation will be insufficient by natural cooling methodology. The logical and simple

way to improve the cooling capacity of a Transformer is to increase the air flow by using fans. Doing this we come to the most used power transformer types called ONAF (Oil Natural Air Forced). But the cooling capacity of ONAF cooling systems depend on the local flow situations and temperatures in the radiator. Reliable cooling is a must to get the best performance from a Transformer, so the reliability of the fans used is of huge importance.

An ideal fan should:

• Deliver the Designed Airflow • Have High Efficiency or in other words Lowest Auxiliary Losses • Have High Reliability, as it is a 24 x 7 operation • Have Long Lifetime • Be Corrosion Proof • Have Lowest Noise ZIEHL-ABEGG offers Fans that meet all the above-mentioned criteria, by offering Compact External Rotor Motor based Axial Fans both in traditional AC-Technology (Asynchronous Motor) or stateof-the-art EC-Technology (Electronically commutated DC-Motor). To provide the perfect air flow ZIEHL-ABEGG offers unique fan technology like FE2owlet and ZAplus. The FE2owlet fan is inspired by nature (Owl) which not only reduces the sound emissions to a minimum but also improves the efficiency of the fans. ZAplus is the perfect corrosion free housing with improved performance, wherein the air is guided in a proper fashion through the radiator. The development and testing of these fans has been conducted in the Unique TÜV and AMCA certified laboratory in Germany. EM
