EDITOR’S DESK

Dear Readers,

"The global power cables market reached a value of US$ 156.3 Billion in 2021. Looking forward, IMARC Group expects the market to reach US$ 224.1 Billion by 2027, exhibiting a CAGR of 6.26% during 2022-2027.”

On the other hand, a general practice of maintenance of earthing system which includes earth resistance test as well is a mere voltage drop across surrounding soil and does not give the physical condition of the electrodes. It is also an irony that the most of the suitable soil are low resistivity soil and most corrosive.

From 23 to 25 November 2022, the four regional Indian metal trade fairs wire India, Tube India, METEC India and India Essen Cutting & Welding will open their doors at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai. Wire, cable, tube and pipe products are indispensable for investments in India's growing infrastructure as well as house, road, bridge and canal construction. Also in the oil, gas, water and wastewater sectors - no industry functions without the technologies and products of these industries.

We hope that the valuable content contained in our magazine will assist you in gaining an understanding of themes related to the wire & cables, power transfers, and also as testing & measuring instruments, earthing among others.

Happy Reading...

As of September 30, 2022, the order backlog stood at INR 7,009 crore, providing revenue visibility for the coming quarters.

Turning one and stronger than ever Last year, the Hitachi Energy identity was launched with the purpose of advancing the world’s energy system to be more sustainable, flexible, and secure. The company’s pioneering technologies and solutions are helping to accelerate the carbon-neutral future, improving the quality of life for today’s generations and those that come.

India holds significant potential in energy transition with grid modernization, smart grids, and digitalization. Hitachi Energy takes pride in the real impact it makes by deploying technologies and solutions that decarbonize the energy system. In Q2FY23, India operations’ carbon emissions declined ~40% YoY.

Through our first year we invested in capabilities to cater to the evolving energy landscape; strengthening our foundation of talent and expanding our manufacturing footprint. In the September ending quarter Hitachi Energy inaugurated the greenfield power quality factory in Bangalore and initiated manufacturing of next generation switchgear operating mechanisms, catering to India and global markets.

Hitachi Energy believes there is significant potential to support customers to scale up and accelerate digitalization by leveraging its capabilities in power systems and advanced digital technologies. This is the beginning of another chapter where the company will continue and deliver results with strategic expansion to drive focus markets.

Revenue

Revenue rose 31.2% YoY reaching INR 1,115 crore for the quarter that ended September 30, 2022, despite the impact of semiconductor shortage. Hitachi Energy in India continued its focus on growth opportunities, including service, while maintaining optimal liquidity and cash position.

Profit and operations

Industry remains optimistic with several project announcements demonstrating sustained belief in India’s long-term growth story. However, in the short-term, the company continued to face semiconductor shortages, commodity and freight prices increase, and foreign exchange volatility. Efforts towards mitigating their impact of have been yielding results, reflected in profit before tax which was up 6.4% YoY at INR 50.2 crore, and profit after tax that was up 8.3% YoY at INR 37.2 crore EM

Hitachi Energy to supply power transformers for India’s

largest renewable energy park

Hitachi Energy will provide made-in-India power transformers to upcoming renewable energy park in Gujarat enabling sustainable energy system for a clean energy transition.

Hitachi Energy India Limited (Hitachi Energy) has been awarded a contract by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) to supply power transformers for their upcoming 4.75 GW renewable energy park in Gujarat, which is part of India’s largest solar park. Spread over 72,600 hectares in Kutch, this solar park supports the country’s efforts towards carbon-neutral future with its increasing green energy footprint. NTPC REL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the power giant, NTPC LTD.

As part of this project, Hitachi Energy will provide ten (10) nos. 315 MVA 400/33/33 kV transformers manufactured at its Transformers factory in Vadodara. This will be the largest rating of transformer, used by solar power evacuation so far.

“The transition from fossil fuels to renewables has only just begun and we are proud to be part of this ambitious project by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited,” said N Venu, Managing Director and CEO, India and South Asia, Hitachi Energy. “Hitachi Energy is championing the urgency of the energy transition by pioneering technologies to help accelerate a carbon-neutral future.”

India is progressively moving towards building a carbon-neutral

future with an ambitious target to achieve net zero emissions by 2070 and to meet half of the electricity requirements from renewable energy sources by 2030. According to a report* by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the total installed renewable energy capacity of India stood at 161.28 GW as of July 2022. This solar energy park is estimated to produce enough electricity to support 8 million** people.

Hitachi Energy is advancing the world’s energy system, pioneering innovative solutions needed to integrate renewables at scale. As of today, around one third of green power in India flows through Hitachi Energy technologies, such as transformers.

The made-in-India power transformers are critical components in power systems. They pool the generated power from the renewable source and step it up at the pooling station to synchronize and feed into inter-state/intra-state transmission system. Their availability and longevity have a major impact on grid reliability and better voltage control even with intermittent supply while the Company’s eco-design transformers enable sustainability requirements.

The transformers are manufactured using fossil-free electricity in Hitachi Energy’s factory in Maneja. Last year, Hitachi Energy had set targets in its Sustainability 2030 plan to become 100 percent fossil-free electricity in its own operations hitting the target in December 2021 EM

• Schneider executives invited to advise on ways to solve energy and climate crises

• Schneider Electric Foundation on the ground to support initiatives to get young people more involved in climate action

Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, today called for accelerated action for an equitable transition to net-zero, driven by collaborative action across the private and public sectors.

The company’s call to action comes in the run-up to the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt on 6-18 November, which Gwenaelle Avice-Huet, Schneider Electric’s Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer, and other senior Schneider Electric executives will attend.

Described by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as a “litmus test” of how serious governments are about the growing toll that climate change is taking on the most vulnerable countries, the event takes place against a backdrop of mounting climate-linked disasters and a painfully disruptive global energy crisis.

During COP27, Schneider Electric executives will participate in a series of panels and meet decisionmakers across business, government and civil society, to help advise on of the sometimes still-underappreciated solutions and approaches that can help deliver urgently needed carbon-reduction action. In-depth analysis from the Schneider Electric Sustainability

energy transition

Research Institute, for example, is helping to underline the big role that the demand-side of the energy equation, and the combination of electrification and digitization can play in accelerating the energy transition.

Also at COP27, the Schneider Electric Foundation is partnering with various NGOs including Art of Change 21 to get young people actively involved in combating the climate crisis. In this spirit, Schneider Electric will also be announcing its partnership with RISE Our World Heritage, a documentary and educational project to promote the impactful combination of technology and local action for sustainability.

A widely-recognized champion of decarbonization and sustainability, Schneider Electric is a big believer in the need for companies to go beyond just “doing business”, and to work with multiple stakeholders and partner to generate a positive long-term impact on the planet and society.

Schneider’s Access to Energy program, for example, is particularly relevant at the COP27 setting, as it brings affordable renewable power solutions and education to rural and remote communities in emerging countries in Africa and elsewhere.

“The climate and energy crises, and the often-unequal economic pain they’re inflicting around the globe, are far too big for any of us to tackle alone,” said Gwenaelle Avice-Huet, Schneider Electric’s Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer. “What we need is faster action, across all fronts, and across all facets and layers of business, government and society a systemic and collaborative approach that spans both big-picture global initiatives and on-the-ground local action

SpaceTech Air Purification Technology

Meditate air purifier uses 6 stages of intense air purification that uses evolved SpaceTech technology to remove the finest impurities.

The pre-filtration stage cleans the air of PM (Particulate Matter) by using integrated filter (Pre-filter mesh, medical grade H14 HEPA filter & Granular activated carbon filter).

The second stage of air purification degenerates the viruses / bacteria and hazardous gases by exposing the air to specific wavelength of light (UV-C & A) and the reaction is catalysed by specific catalysts (strontium titanate dopped with palladium & nano silver). This process, called photo-catalytic oxidation, is adapted from purification technology deployed for space stations however, modified by partial mixing of strontium, palladium & nano-silver to enhance the efficacy of oxidation

thereby degenerating the pathogens much faster. The hazardous gases like formaldehyde, ethylene, ozone are disintegrated to basic elements of environment, thereby eliminating them from the environment for good.

The Interface:

The AQI monitor has three capacitive touch buttons for power, mode and toggle. The display shows important parameters like Air quality, battery life and fan speed. This portable AQI monitor also acts like a remote for real time air quality monitoring as well controlling the device.

Wire is a piece of metal that is used to carry electric current on the other hand, cable contain a number of wires inside a plastic or rubber which is used to carry electric signals. Copper, aluminum, plastics and alloys are the materials which are used to make these wires and cables. They are widely used in industries like defence and gas, oil, automotive etc. These days, due to increasing residences and houses in developing countries, there is an increase in the use of the wires and cables.

The domestic cables and wires industry has registered robust growth over the last five years led by the government’s focus on providing power to all and gradual pickup from the housing market. The wire and cables market in India has the potential to grow by USD 1.65 billion during 2021-2025, and the market’s growth momentum will accelerate at a CAGR of 3.80%. The development of infrastructural projects by the government and investment is driving the growth of the wire and cable market in India. The market is expected to be driven by factors such as the growth in renewable power generation in India, the expansion and revamping of Transmission & Distribution infrastructure in India, and increasing investments in metro railways. Increased investments in smart grid projects and up-gradation of power transmission and distribution systems are also estimated to propel the demand for wires & cables globally. Significant investments in smart grid technology have resulted in an increasing need for grid interconnections. Additionally, rising investments in underground cables and the growth of renewable energy are set to escalate the adoption of wires and cables. Wire and cables demand is directly dependent

on the growth of the manufacturing industry and infrastructure in the power, telecommunications, residential and commercial sectors. Thus the government’s initiatives on various fronts like power, housing, infrastructure and digitization are sure to generate a lot of business for the wire and cable industry in the foreseeable future. Likewise, with the government’s emphasis on pushing renewable energy to the forefront, the industry is now looking forward to supplying cables for solar and wind power applications in addition to oil and gas, railways and other specialized segments. Wires and cables are deployed across an extensive range of applications which include consumer electronics, utilities, material handling, automotive, and entertainment/leisure amongst others. Growing inclination toward the expansion of prevailing grid networks coupled with lack of efficient electric infrastructure will propel the industry outlook over the forecast timeline.

Industry Challenges

The wire and cable industry has vast potential in growth in coming years but it has some challenges also, the increasing price rise and competition from Chinese imports. The wire and cable industry is experiencing volatility in raw material prices, as the price of copper continues to increase, profit margins are squeezed and they become uncompetitive in the international market. County is experiencing an all time high price of fuel it’s direct impact on domestic transportation, in result wire and cable transportation has increased. Also, a large section of the industry is still unorganised; there is a lack of quality product offerings from these players due to non-compliance with the product guidelines.

Cable, in electrical and electronic systems, a conductor or group of conductors for transmitting electric power or telecommunication signals from one place to another. Electric communication cables transmit voice messages, computer data, and visual images via electrical signals to telephones, wired radios, computers, tele-printers, facsimile machines and televisions. There is no clear distinction between an electric wire and an electric cable. Usually the former refers to a single, solid metallic conductor with or without insulation, while the latter refers to a stranded conductor or to an assembly of insulated conductors. With fibre-optic cables, made of flexible fibres of glass and plastic, electrical signals are converted to light pulses for the transmission of audio, video, and computer data.

Electric Power Cables

The most common type of electric power cable is that which is suspended overhead between poles or steel towers. These aerial cables consist of a number of wires, usually of copper or aluminum, twisted (stranded) together in concentric layers. Copper or aluminum is chosen for high electrical conductivity, while stranding gives the cable flexibility. Because aerial cables are frequently subjected to severe environmental stresses, alloys of copper or aluminum are sometimes used to increase the mechanical strength of the cable, although at some detriment to its electrical conductivity. A more common design is to include in the stranded cable assembly

a number of high-strength, noncorrosive steel wires. Many aerial cables, especially those operating at high voltages, are bare (uninsulated). Cables operating at lower voltages frequently have coverings of asphalt-saturated cotton braid, polyethylene, or other dielectric (no conducting) material. These coverings offer some protection against short-circuiting and accidental electric shock.

Another type of electric power cable is installed in underground ducts and is extensively used in cities where lack of space or considerations of safety preclude the use of overhead lines. Unlike an aerial cable, a buried cable invariably uses commercially pure copper or aluminum (mechanical strength is not a problem underground), and the stranded conductor is frequently rolled to maximize its compactness and electrical conductance.

Aerial and underground power cables compose a major portion of the electrical circuit from the generator to the point of utilization of the electric power. The balance of the circuit (and sometimes the entire circuit) may, however, require specialized cables. Illustrative of these usages and of the special conditions to be met are cables for use in steel mills and boiler rooms (high temperature), on mobile equipment (vibration and excessive flexing), in chemical plants (corrosion), for submarines and mines (mechanical abuse), near nuclear reactors (high radiation), and on artificial satellites (pressure extremes).

Electric Telecommunication Cables

Electric cables used to transmit information are quite different from power cables, both in function and in design. Power cables are designed for high voltages and high current loads, whereas both voltage and current in a communication cable are small. Power cables operate on direct current or low-frequency alternating current, while communication cables operate at higher frequencies. A power cable usually has not more than three conductors, each of which may be 1 inch (2.5 cm) or more in diameter; a telephone cable may have several thousand conductors, the diameter of each being less than 0.05 inch (0.125 cm).

Protective coverings for electric communication cables are similar to those for electric power cables. They usually consist of an aluminum or lead-alloy tube or of a combination of metallic strips and thermoplastic materials. The insulation of a telephone cable is composed of dry cellulose (in the form of paper tape wrapped around the conductor or paper pulp applied to the conductor) or of polyethylene. The insulation thickness is a few hundredths of an inch or less. A coaxial cable, which first gained widespread use during World War II, is a two-conductor cable in which one of the conductors takes the form of a tube while the other (smaller but also circular in cross section) is supported, with a minimum of solid insulation, at the centre of the tube. Several of these coaxial units may be assembled within a common jacket, or sheath.

The construction of long submarine cables for either telephone or telegraph service is somewhat different from that discussed previously. A transatlantic cable fo r telegraphs was first completed in 1858 and for telephones in 1956; a fibre-optic cable first spanned the Atlantic Ocean in 1988. See also undersea cable.

Market Overview:

Over the past two decades, Indian wires and cables industry has grown considerably in size while transforming itself into an organized one from being an unorganized sector. Though the unorganized sector still constitutes a notable one-third of the industry, however, the market is dominated by few major players. To be precise, the market is led by major players specializing in designing, manufacturing viz. Polycab wires, Finolex cables, CMI, RR Kabel, Sterlite Technologies, KEI Industries and Havells India. Other significant players include Cable Corporation of India, Cords Cable Industries, Diamond Power Investment, Gupta Power Investment Ltd., KEC International Ltd., LS Cable India, Shilpi Cable Technologies, Universal Cables, V-Guard Industries, etc.

The overall size of the cables industry in India is estimated to be around INR 412.50 billion in 2016-17 as per IEEMA, recording a moderate growth of around 5.1 percent over the previous FY 2015-16. As for the current financial year, the industry has registered a growth of 9.6 percent during the first www.electricalmirror.net

www.electricalmirror.net 35 NOVEMBER 2022 ELECTRICAL MIR ROR

half of FY 2017-18 (April to September). On the other hand, due to the delays in order finalizations by major buyers the conductors market saw a decline of 10.76 percent falling in overall size from INR 81.25 billion in 2015-16 to INR 72.50 billion in 2016-17. Unfortunately, the segment is still facing the heat and negative growth of 17.40 percent during the first half of current FY 2017-18 (April to September). During 2016-17, the exports stood at INR 19.55 billion (registering a growth of 14.5 percent) and the imports stood at INR 5.76 billion (with a decline of 1.1 percent). Thus, the exports have supported the growth in the cable segment.

If we look at the exports/imports comparison during the first half of the current FY 2017-18, the total value of cable exports stood at INR 11.96 billion, whereas the cable imports during the same period stood at INR 4.59 billion. While the exports recorded an increase of 2 percent over the corresponding period in the previous year, the imports witnessed a sharp decline of 50 percent over the corresponding period of the previous year. On the other hand, during the first half of the current financial year 2017-18, the import of conductors stood at Rs 3.11 billion, recording a significant decline of 41 percent over the same period in the previous year. Fortunately, the exports of conductors registered a growth of 5 percent in this period and stood at Rs 8.29 billion.

Trends: Market & Technology

Overall, the cables and conductors industry has grown significantly in the past few years with investments infused in the power and investment sectors by the government. While the cable segment witnessed a positive growth, the conductor segment experienced sluggish demand last year. Across cable sub-categories, the power cables segment registered a growth of 5.2 percent in 2016-17, while the control cables segment saw a decline of 3.4 percent. However, the first half of 2017-18 saw a reversal of trends wherein the high voltage power cable growth tumbled by 7 percent and the control cable segment grew by 2.9 percent.

The cable segment is the shift towards high voltage transmission lines. This demand is essentially driven by the creation of high capacity long distance corridors to deliver electricity to high demand regions and the development of green energy corridors for integrating the increasing share of renewable energy into the grid. Further, underground cabling is gaining increased acceptance among state and central transmission utilities as it provides greater safety (against electrocution) as compared to overhead cables.

On the technology front, the industry is witnessing a number of new technologies being introduced to enable utilities to augment their capacities without encountering the issues

36 NOVEMBER 2022 ELECTRICAL MIR OR R www.electricalmirror.net
COVER sTORY W IRE s & Ca B l E s

of right-of-way (RoW) clearances. Further, due to the risks associated with bare overhead cables, covered cables have been gaining importance in the market. Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), high-density polyethylene, aerial bunched cables and spacer cable systems are some of the most commonly used covered cables.

In addition, an emerging technology trend of high-temperature low sag (HTLS) conductors is witnessing a greater adoption by the utilities. These conductors not only enhanced the operational efficiency but can also be used for the purpose of reconductoring the existing lines that enable utilities to transmit a higher quantum of power through existing corridors and can significantly scale down losses as well as instances of power outages. Further, to increase the current carrying capacity and scale down the transmission losses, utilities are turning to high-temperature superconductors (HTS) that have 5 to 10 times the current carrying capacity as compared to conventional conductors.

Gas-insulated lines (GILs) that can be installed under the ground as well as in tunnels and trenches are today a well-accepted technology trend in the overseas market. Due resistive losses of GILs being lower than overhead lines and other types of underground cables, they offer greater reliability with no risk of fire. This technology can serve as a viable alternative to overhead lines where RoW is not available for the transmission of electricity. However, it is still waiting to see a widespread adoption in the domestic market.

Way Forward

There is utmost need to look into corrective measures to deal with the issue faced by the industry. There is lack of standardisation of the end product posing a serious challenge for the sector. It is therefore imperative to develop standard guidelines for the industry as a whole so as the quality is not compromised. Further, the government should look into creating a single window clearance mechanism for all players to deal with the issue of delays in projects. This will help in faster project clearances leading to spur in the demands for the industry.

Though increasing industrialization and growing population agriculture for reliable and efficient power supply have kept demand high for cables and conductors. Going forward, looking the investments infused in the power and investment sectors by the government and various initiatives undertaken, this demand trend is expected to continue for the industry in the future as well.

According to the IEEFA, India’s T/R grids will requirement adding modernization investments totaling between $60 bn & $ 80 bn. Additionally, GoI has established a target to add100 GW of solar power capacity by 2022 which requirements between $6 bn & $8 bn of grid investment to move this power from its sources to its users. After this India’s grid will be much more accessible, reliable, cleaner & efficient than it currently is. Much of this investment seems to be made using

world-class equip’, materials & techniques to ensure that every penny invested gets put to good use. Cables & conductors are crucial elements of a T&D network. Cable & conductor market in India seen strong growth over the past few years on the back of expansions in the power sector as well as other investment sectors. This market in India comprises nearly half of the electrical industry & has grown at a CAGR of over 12%. Governments continued focus on 24×7 reliable power supply, reduction in T&D losses & universal household electrification has helped drive demand in the market & this rising trend is expected to continue in the near term. Development & strengthening of the country’s T&D network has always been a key focus area. For this, a no’ of government initiatives & programs have been undertaken such as the DDUGJY, IPDS & the recently launched Saubhagya scheme. All these schemes have created a market for this sector in the country. Indian wire & cable industry gone through different phases of expansion & contraction. JFTC is now being used no more for the telephone lines& is an e.g. of boom & bust cycle. Fiber optic cable too will have its boom & bust period; it had one 17 years ago & it will have one again. India will have consolidation of certain plants & closure of certain others but there will be an ongoing market for fiber optic cables. This industry has had a cyclical demand profile where demand is based upon the economy& technology, both of which run at different speeds

& so some¬ times these peaks & troughs in the 2 different demand cycles coincide & either get a boom/ get a bust & at other times a steady trickle of business. Some players in India have survived through all of that & the people who are still here are the ones who know how to manage & survive it. In the next 2-3, some good growth can be seen in the cable industry, especially the fiber optics. India cannot produce enough fiber at the moment to satisfy the demand that will come over the next 2-3 years. And is a reason why major fiber makers in India are investing a lot to expand production to produce fiber that will be needed. India stands to be in a good position globally in terms of being a producer of these products. Once saturated own market with cable there will still be a market for replace¬ment. Some additions will be there but there will also be other markets which need it & those become the export market. African countries are the next big & growing markets. China is covering its domestic market. Middle East will grow but small population may impact the scope for business there.

Market size & growth

Size of the cable industry in India has increased at a CAGR of 14.6% between 2013-14&2017-18. As per IEEMA, total size of the domestic cable market in 2017-18 was est’ at Rs

500 bn, a remarkable growth of 20% over 2016-17. In the first 6 months of 2018-19 (Apr-Sep), market registered a 30% growth. Meanwhile, Domestic conductor industry has witnessed sluggish growth over the past 5 years, recording a CAGR of about 2%. Size of market increased marginally from Rs 72.5 bn in 2016-17 to Rs 81 bn in 2017-18, after recording -ve growth for 2 consecutive years. In the first half of 2017-18 (Apr-Sep), it again registered a decline of 6.3% over the previous year. Which can be attributed to delays in the finalization of orders by major buyers? In the cable industry, demand for all subcategories of wires & cables such as power cables, control cables & comm. cables has grown consistently. In 2017-18, the LV cable segment registered a growth of 27.87%, followed by the control cable segment at 12.2%, & the HV cable segment at 9.7%. In the first half of 2018-19, the LV, HV & control cable segments recorded growth rates of 33.5%, 29.3% & 22.9%, respectively. Yet, increase in import of cables & conductors have affected domestic demand. In 2017-18, import of cables stood at Rs 7.34 bn &conductors at Rs 5.25 bn, about 20&33% higher than respectively imports recorded in 2016-17. In the first 6 months of 2018-19, while the import of cables continued to grow, recording an increase of 23% over the previous year, import of conductors recorded a significantly decline of 24%. Total value of cable exports in 2017-18 stood at Rs 25.6 bn &conductor exports at Rs 18.2 bn, hence registering a growth of 18%&15%, respectively which is a +ve indicator for the domestic industry.

Growth drivers

Cable & conductor industry have grown significantly in the past few years with investments being made in the power & investment sectors by the government. Size of the industry is expected to double over the next 5 years, growing at a CAGR of 20%. Continuing focus on 24×7 power supply, development & strengthening of the T&D network & electrification of all villages & households are some of the key growth drivers of the cable & conductor market. Various government programs including the IPDS, Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana & the UDAY have led to new investments in the distribution segment. Government has planned an investment of about Rs 2.6

tn in the T/R sector during the XIIIth plan period, which is 1.4 times higher than the proposed capex in the XIIth plan period. Of the planned investment, Rs 300 bn is likely to be spent on T/R systems of 220 kV & below. One of the major drivers for this industry is the integration of renewables to the system. Government has set a target to install 225 GW of renewable capacity by 2022. A large share of which will come from solar installations, creating a significantly opportunity for solar cables. Also, to evacuate power from the large-scale RE plants being developed under the plan, a no’ of T/R lines are being constructed, hence driving demand for conductors. Also, ongoing smart city projects are expected to lead to largescale developments in the power, telecom, housing & other investment sectors, creating more demand. Underground cabling is an essential part of smart city projects. It has become almost mandatory in densely populated areas owing to increasing RoW issues. It is also being preferred owing to its benefits such as low susceptibility to damage from severe weather conditions, greater safety, protection against illegal connections, theft & pilferage & better aesthetics. Government also plans to undertake 100% electrification of its broadgauge network by 2021-22 which involves electrification of almost 40,000 route km of railway lines, which is a huge opportunity for this market. Metro rail projects worth Rs 1.75 tn are at various stages of approval & are likely to come up for bidding in the next 5 years, creating a Rs 175 bn opportunity. Also, the oil & gas industry is set to invest Rs 6 tn over the next 7 years, largely focusing on increasing the refining capacity & developing new fields. And, this is expected to boost the cable industry as 3% of the capex in the oil & gas industry is spent on cables. Reconductoring also increases the demand as it enables utilities to transmit a higher quantum of power through existing corridors & can significantly scale down losses & instances of power outages.

While the cable segment witnessed a positive growth, the conductor segment experienced sluggish demand. With the development of large-scale RE plants & solar parks, there is a need to lay down lines in order to connect them to existing grid. Meanwhile, investment in the coming years will continue to be driven by the central government through schemes such as

www.electricalmirror.net 39 NOVEMBER 2022 ELECTRICAL MIR ROR
www.electricalmirror.net

DDUGJY, IPDS & Saubhagya. Even though the DDUGJY scheme is nearing its target, the focus on household electrification through Saubhagya will continue to sustain the demand in the cables & conductors’ segment. Also, with most of the states adopting UDAY, the state discoms are expected to improve their T&D investment through renewed capital expenditure. Apart from the impetus provided by the government, other key driver for the growth of the cable segment is the shift towards HVT/R lines. This demand is essentially driven by the creation of high capacity long distance corridors to deliver electricity to high demand regions & the development of green energy corridors for integrating the increasing share of RE into the grid. Future growth in the cable segment is likely to be driven by 132 kV&400 kV lines. Underground cabling too is gaining increased acceptance among state & central T/R utilities as it provides greater safety as compared to overhead cables. Lastly, the increase in government infra spending, particularly under the Smart Cities Mission, is expected to propel demand &present new opportunities in the cables & conductors’ segment.

Street lighting is one of the sectors where off-grid energy systems are used, and in the past decade interest in these systems has increased due to recent developments occurred both in LED and PV technology. An objective of this report is to provide information about LEDs benefits and challenges in road lighting, which will assist the engineers and researchers to develop the LEDs with the standards used for road lighting and its impact on drivers, pedestrians and environment. It also discusses the basis of quantitative recommendations for road lighting; the background to current guidance, the need to revise standards to respond to developments in science and technology.

Led lighting:

With growing urbanization, energy saving journey involves connecting light with the application; application with time & time with the user. There is a growing demand for better control of energy, reduced light pollution & wider compatibility with diverse digital systems. This can only be achieved when you understand the wider application. Globally, there is a trend to use LED & white light that is enabling us to both lower the energy required for lighting & lower the required lighting level. Research demonstrates that we simply see more efficiently in whiter light than under conventional light sources. This combined with LED challenges us to control & dim our street lighting, setting light in the right place & quantity, using Thorn systems/ by integrating your preferred controls. Changes in technology & legislation help us to support you with your carbon reduction targets, to control obtrusive light & to reduce energy, all moving you towards achieving tough environmental standards. Switching off is no longer your only choice, dimming positively impacts energy usage & keeps our road sv & streets safe for all. Another notable trend is within outdoor lighting controls. Today, LED means controls are easily accessible to all, either by local presence detection, part night dimming, linked groups of fittings responding to a wider influence/ through digitally connected cities. The ability to interact with lighting, use data to fine tune the energy & performance profiles is enabling municipalities to react to the needs of the population, to lengthen the life of an installation & to plan for the future. Lighting more than ever can be efficient, respects our need for dark & yet stimulate a truly smart city. To achieve all these aims takes a team working with & that has experience, practice & a heritage of great projects.

Performance

The optical system of an outdoor luminaire has to be designed to satisfy a number of criteria. The main factors are the type of light distribution required & the choice of light source. Previously the main light sources were traditionally sodium, mercury, ceramic

metal halide-based discharge & even CFL but these are now surpassed by LED. Size of light source influences the options open to the designer. The shape of CFL dictates a longer, narrower lantern with little scope for varying the light distribution in the plane of the lamp axis; compact metal halide lamps enable increased choices through moving lamp within reflector. LED’s because of their size & directionality grants themselves to a greater variety of optical arrangements resulting in distributions with excellent control. Thus, modern optical designs, materials & techniques can deliver more controlled light distributions & maximize performance. An intelligent electronic driver is required that dims pairs of LEDs in relation to each other & as a result tunes the light distribution of the lantern to the specific road conditions. The greater use of luminaires with “white light” sources (LED, metal halide & compact fluorescent) enhances visual performance due to the output spectrum being more suited to the eyes’ own response at low levels of illumination. It allows equivalent recognition at lower light levels.

Efficiency

A luminaire design, i ncluding optics, & the right light source & gear combination, have a direct impact on energy consumption & maintenance costs. Miniature metal halide & LEDs in particular are sources renowned for high quality optical performance with low energy consumption in many applications. Electronic ballasts with high frequency possess the operational edge of better lamp efficacy & life, lowered energy consumption, with capacity for dimming/ power reduction & automatic control, in a lightweight one-piece housing. To maximize energy efficiency, LED drivers can take advantage of flexible drive currents. Used to their full potential in well-designed luminaires these technologies can achieve energy savings in excess of 80% on refurbishment projects. In addition, the S/P ratio properties of these white light sources enable lighting levels to be lowered in certain applications & countries, such as residential areas, thus saving further energy & emissions. LED can last longer compare to other conventional light sources with correct thermal management. When combined with lighting controls that dim & provide feedback as well as the longer life of LED light sources, impact on maintenance demands & costs can be notable, lessens the need for night-time scouting, & lessens need to change lamps. Lighting design software’s, helps calculate savings quickly & assess the life cycle cost of a project. Emphasis on sustainable practices is required, such as designing products to last longer, to use materials that can be recycled & easily dismantled at the end of life, & to minimize the use of toxic materials & packaging.

Comfort

Lighting to suit modern transport routes is not just about delivering optimum levels of light for effective performance & energy saving. The right light can generate feelings of safety, reduce stress, increase focus & orientation, improve confidence & provide reassurance. Today’s LED luminaires are not limited by the traditional design constraints & with the use of digital technology enable the lighting to be adapted to suit the needs of the user.

Outdoor Lighting Controls

All outdoor lighting applications require a control mechanism to enhance energy savings & comfort levels. The most basic is provided by photocells/ time-controlled switches. The swift run-up times of modern light sources enables the user to trim annual burning hours. Many luminaires are now available with integral bi-power switches, a flexible device used in conjunction with the power reduction facilities offered by electronic ballasts & LED drivers. Bi-power enables light source power to be varied by switching between power levels controlled by a dedicated control line/ standalone device within the luminaire, /by mains bourne digital signals. Simplicity with which LED can respond to changes in power underlines their suitability to this form of control. A central management system (CMS) offers a different dimension. Utilizing either power line/ radio frequency data transmission, it allows control of all the light points of a road network from a centralized/ decentralized point. CMS functions best with lamps optimized for use with digitally controlled electronic ballasts & LED drivers. Some of the benefits area facility to dim/ turn off luminaires at specific times based on pedestrian & traffic flows; Energy use optimization; Flexibility to incident adaptability; Monitor & report failures & streamline maintenance programs, CMS is a basic step in creating intelligent roads as it can integrate with renewable energy & smart grids.

Highways/Motorways

Road lighting should aid its user to travel to their destination safely & securely at high speed, dependant on the prevailing weather & traffic conditions. Any object at the road edge must be seen without excessive & obtrusive light encroaching on the immediate surroundings. It is of prime to select energy efficient, easy to install & maintain luminaire & light source combination. The goal is to meet regulations & standards that specify light levels with correct uniformity & glare control, relevant to the conditions & geography. The Luminaires should offer a choice of body size, shallow/ flat glass enclosures, R-PEC LED optics, post-top/ side entry & numerous light sources & control options. This means that the luminaire must provide the best performance regardless of the road

layout. Outcome is less spill-light away the road surface with better uniformity & savings in initial expenditure, less energy per meter of road & reduced future maintenance costs. Highways & motorways are designed for high speeds (>60km/h) where no pedestrians, cyclists/ slow vehicles are involved. There are no intersections & access is controlled. Traditional mounting heights are above 12m to correctly light a twin carriageway with 3/ 4 lanes, plus a hard shoulder at either side. Twin-arm brackets should be considered to optimize performance. Though conventionally, columns have been installed in a central reservation, an opposite installation with columns behind the hard shoulder can simplify maintenance operations & reduce traffic disruption. Glare is a major concern & an optimally designed optic and/or the use of flat glass enclosures are necessary. Luminaires mounted on column ought to be discovered to reduce impact risk, give visual guidance of the route ahead, for instance curves, junctions & other hazards, yet blend effortlessly with the surrounding landscape.

Main Roads

The essential difference between the lighting requirements for high speed roads & main roads is determined by the element of speed & the type of road users. Main roads have a wider variety of road users, increasing the need for visual clarity. Lighting is provided for reasons of safety, to aid navigation & orientation of the user on the road, albeit at a more moderate speed. Roads may not be separated by a central reservation. Consideration also needs to be given to cost efficiency in terms of installation, energy use & maintenance through life and, from the perspective of the driver, the perception of safety through the correct levels of light, uniformity & low glare. Using highly engineered heat sinks integrated into the canopy & combinations of LED optics superior optical performance can be delivered for lighting classes up to ME3a, while providing comfort through good glare control as well as energy efficiency & maintenance cost savings. In most cases it is unsafe to simply switch off the lighting, unless there are times when the roads are completely empty. What is required is from full central control to group dimming, & individual mini-photocell & bi-power options to ensure optimum energy management, which is rightly the major aim after safety. The main use of main roads is for vehicles at high speed (>60km/h) but pedestrians, cyclists/ slow vehicles may also be present on footpaths, cycle paths & slow lanes. Intersections can be present & need special attention. A common installation will use columns at around 8-12m high & in an opposite/ twin central configuration. Installations always need to be related to the road layout, the number of lanes involved & the lighting criteria. Centenary mounted solutions, where luminaires are mounted over the centre of the road, are popular options in

44 NOVEMBER 2022 ELECTRICAL MIR OR R www.electricalmirror.net sPECIal FEaTuRE
l ED & RO a D lIGHTING

some countries, especially in urban environments. Reducing the number of lighting columns should be balanced with the visual effect of additional suspension wires in architecturally sensitive areas. As for controls the use of dimming, suited in reaction speed to fast moving vehicles & also to smaller slower pedestrians, will either dim automatically when it is known there are less users, / will react directly to traffic density, time of day & daylight.

Minor Roads

A mix of traffic will be found on minor roads including: motor vehicles, cyclists & pedestrians, all of which should be moving at a slower pace. The lighting levels are generally set at lower levels than for major roads as road users should be more attentive & have a longer time to react. The requirements of pedestrians, who need to see & be seen, particularly at intersections & crossings, now become vitally important & light will need to extend from the road across to cycle paths & footpaths. A good vertical element to the lighting distribution will help with facial recognition, reducing the fear of crime but also allowing drivers to read body language with other road users & predict what they are likely to do. White light is preferable, but use of high color temperatures should be avoided. The application performance, energy management & glare control requirements will all help in luminaire & controls selection & the aesthetic may have to tie into the surrounding architectural style & feel. Remember that minor roads may sit within urban environments & light spill behind the luminaire should be limited to those surfaces required by the standards with less onto surrounding property. Where these roads pass though rural zones they may remain unlit except for safety. In this case linked detection & controls systems can be used to detect oncoming traffic & maximize energy saving while preserving darkness when the road is empty. Minor roads are normally medium to low speed roads with a large number of slow vehicles & pedestrians. Intersections are common. Regional roads & urban roads are mainly part of this group as well as commercial streets. Columns 6-8m high are commonly used in a single sided/ staggered layout, although in some commercial streets with wide footpaths an additional column & luminaire may be used to achieve high quality lighting & differentiate areas. Visual comfort is achieved with good uniformity, low glare & lamps with good color rendering which will promote a feeling of safety, particularly for pedestrians. The luminaires & support systems, which must be carefully located to minimize potential impact, should be in harmony with their surroundings. This will include the impact of dimming/ switching of luminaires on surrounding domestic premises & their occupants.

Residential Roads

Generally residential roads should be lit with light levels & color rendering that enhances the neighborhood & encourages people

to go out at night without the fear of crime. Luminaires should have a good spacing window to allow for the considerable number of junctions/ obstacles to column positioning. They should be easy to install, maintain & be resistant to potential vandalism. The luminaires should be energy efficient & reliable in function with lighting controls monitoring their performance, & when necessary bringing failures to the attention of maintenance teams. Care should be taken to ensure light nuisance is not caused to residential properties, but be aware some residents may be used to light spill providing access & security lighting to their dwelling. Luminaires that accept light guillotines may be necessary where the terrain will cause light through windows. These roads are normally used by low speed mixed traffic where parked vehicles are common & column heights of 6m/ less are frequently chosen. Single sided layouts may be used to reduce installation costs although layouts may vary due to multiple access points to private car parks/ properties. It is more common to light from back of path, allowing free movement to pedestrians, etc. The use of staggered layouts is common when parking lanes & wide footpaths are present. In applications where crime ratios are high & facial recognition is required, vertical & semi-cylindrical luminance classes should be applied & the use of good color rendering lamps to improve perception is recommended. Low glare lanterns should be considered to reduce light trespass onto adjacent residential housing. Vandal & impact resistant luminaires may be required. Lanterns can be themed/ styled to suit the neighborhood road & architectural layout. Lighting controls should dim slowly & avoid nuisance switching.

Way Forward

There is a need for new standards responsible for road lighting. The effective standards will be the one which is related to the benefits for road users so that they can travel safely, feel safe and minimize the risk of road collisions. All in all LEDs are the strong candidates for replacing conventional light sources as they enhance the vision quality in road lighting in addition to energy saving.

Road lighting using LEDs is cost effective, easy to implement, and high impact solutions to reduce carbon emissions. EE lighting is a step in the right direction to achieve greener and safer transport, de carbonize and beautify cities and urban places, and promote sustainable and inclusive growth in rural areas. This report provide the information about LEDs benefits and challenges in road lighting, which will assist the engineers and researchers to develop the LEDs with the standards used for road lighting and its impact on drivers, pedestrians and environment. It also discusses the basis of quantitative recommendations for road lighting; the background to current guidance, the need to revise standards to respond to developments in science and technology EM

The loads today are predominantly nonlinear and the extent of nonlinear loads which account for about seventy percent of total loads is on the rise. The major power quality issue is generation of harmonic currents by the nonlinear loads. Various problems caused by Harmonics at load end where these are generated are heat loss, distortion in performance parameters of electrical and electronic equipments, spurious tripping of thermal protections, overloading of neutral circuits, capacitor failures, erratic operation of controls, interference in communication circuits, and measuring errors in metering instruments etc. The adverse effects get magnified if resonance occurs due to indiscriminate use of capacitors. The harmonic currents that get exported to the grid and appear as voltage harmonics at grid end flow back to all consumers as voltage distortion and adversely affect all consumers besides causing overloading of distribution transformers of utilities. The various stakeholders involved in the management of this power quality issue are consumers, utilities, regulatory bodies, auditors, consultants, and solution providers. It is expected that all the above entities perform their functions effectively and correctly and follow best practices. We will discuss the best practices that are expected to be followed to ensure effective management of the harmonics.

Consumers

The harmonics are generated at consumers end by nonlinearity of loads. The consumers being originators of harmonics have primary responsibility for mitigating the harmonics at their end. Harmonic mitigation solutions are needed to ensure that the export of harmonic currents to grid is within IEEE519 guidelines. To design an optimum

Power Quality –Best Practices

solution a Power Quality study is needed. The desired solution is one which brings benefit to both, consumer and to the utility. If the solution is connected at PCC end it improves the performance upwards of PCC whereas there is no qualitative improvement below the PCC for equipments connected down the line. The solutions provided down the line close to nonlinear loads such as at VFDs, bring about improvement of power quality both at consumer end and also all the way upwards up to grid. The best practice for consumers is to have a judicious combination of harmonic mitigation solution that not only prevents export of current harmonics to grid but also improves the power quality within the electrical network at consumer end.

Utilities

When we talk about utilities, we mainly mean the distribution companies. The entire generation, transmission and distribution network is clean and does not contribute to harmonic current generation. The distribution companies directly interact with consumers who are the originators of power quality distortion and export harmonic currents to the grid. The distribution companies have a major role to play in discipling as well as educating the consumers. They need to have tariff structures which are designed to provide incentives to consumers who maintain good power quality and penalize the erring consumers. The tariff structures being approved by regulatory bodies these days are designed to discipline both the consumers and the utilities alike. There are penalties to consumers exporting excessive harmonics to grid and also penalties to distribution companies exporting voltage harmonics to consumers. If the consumers default and export excessive harmonics to grid

46 NOVEMBER 2022 ELECTRICAL MIR OR R www.electricalmirror.net GuEsT aRTIClE
G
E
u E s T
l

it reduces life of distribution transformers as they bear the brunt of these harmonics, and it also results in voltage distortion reflected by voltage harmonics in the grid supply voltage. Thus, distribution companies have np option but to discipline the consumers if they fail in this, they end up exporting back voltage harmonics to consumers and face penalties. On power quality front the best practice of distribution companies is to ensure effective implementation of rationalized tariff structures.

Regulatory Bodies

The regulatory bodies have to protect the interests of both consumers and those of distribution companies. These are legal entities and have to work within legal framework and the process of decision making is very lengthy. The consumers do not invest in harmonic mitigation solutions unless they are compelled by regulations. Thus, getting rationalized tariff structures in place is the first requirement. Barring a couple of states these rationalized tariff structures are not in place. The fault lies mainly with the distribution companies which are not able to effectively take up their case for approval of rationalized tariff structures. On their part regulatory bodies need to give clear, unambiguous, and impartial rulings after taking inputs from technical experts.

Technical Auditors/Consultants/ Solution Providers

Technical Auditors conduct power quality studies and make recommendations based on the observations collected during measurement of power quality parameters. Auditing is done by independent auditors or solution providers or even technical consultants. They are required to collect all the relevant data and make recommendations of optimally designed solutions. Unfortunately, in majority of the cases it does not happen the right way. It is observed that either due to ignorance or by design, unrealistic and exaggerated

solutions are recommended to push sales volumes. Harmonic measurements are conducted with capacitors in ON condition and amplified values of harmonics so recorded are taken as reference to recommend unnecessarily higher rated Active Harmonic Filters. The right procedure for getting the reference harmonic current for designing harmonic filter size is to measure the harmonic current with capacitors in OFF condition as it gives the basic harmonic current value and not the amplified harmonic current value caused due to resonance by capacitors. Another equally important recommendation is for replacing plain capacitors with capacitors in series with detuned reactors. This not only avoids harmonic amplification but also mitigates some amount of harmonics. The best practice for auditors/ consultants/solution providers is to do a sincere job and recommend a correctly sized optimum solution.

It is observed that many times some unscrupulous solution providers with limited technical core competence in association with small time consultants dupe gullible consumers with deceptive and faulty solutions. Some common tactics involve misrepresentation of KVAR capacities at unrealistic voltage levels, for example design voltage of capacitors for passive filter application is taken as 15.6 KV as against required value of about 13.5KV. The notional KVAR capacity at 15.6 KV is twice the realistic and effective basic KVAR at 11KV thus allowing the seller to artificially raise the cost to double. In actual practice such sellers have no intention of providing higher voltage rated capacitors and can be easily caught if capacitors are tested for voltage levels indicated on the name plate. Another tactic involves classifying 7% fifth harmonic detuned passive system as 4th harmonic tuned system to claim higher cost despite absence of 4th harmonic in the system. Such malpractices don’t work if consumers are vigilant and ensure wider participation from reputed vendors and are careful in selection of consultants. EM

Electrical Safety- NGR Monitoring System

Introduction-Types of Power supply systems

Earth is a reference for all types of power supply and distribution systems. Proper selection of power supply and distribution system and protective measures depends on the criticality of the equipment, processes and reliability required. The issues to be considered are a) likelihood of insulation faults b) basic and fault protection c) availability of power supply d) technical & economic considerations e) practicability of implementation.

Three main types of distribution systems:

a) IT System All active parts are insulated from earth or one point of supply is connected to earth through a sufficiently high impedance. The exposed non current carrying conductive parts of the electrical installation are earthed individually or collectively. IT systems are unearther, floating systems and used in critical systems which need availability and prevention from fire and shock hazard.

b) TN System –One point of the supply is directly earthed. The exposed non current carrying conductive parts of the installation are connected to that point by protective conductors. TN system are used in industry in general where safety during faults is needed as per regulations.

Indian and International Standards:

• Indian Electricity Rule Clause 116 mentions that in the interest of safety, the magnitude of the earth fault current shall be limited to 750mA in 550/1100 V system for underground mines and oil fields and 50A in 3.3KV/6.6KV and 100A in 11KV system in surface mines by installing a suitably designed restricted neutral of supply. Further the effectiveness and healthiness of the protecting system shall be continuously monitored to avoid unsafe condition. Further the over-voltages should be monitored to be within safe limits.

• Canadian Standard CSA M421 for use of Electricity in Mines Clauses 4.5.6 & 4.5.7 mentions that the overvoltage in case of fault shall be limited to 100V or less by using suitable neutral grounding device and supply to be de-energized if fault voltage higher than this. Also, the continuity of grounding connection to be monitored. Further audible and visual alarm shall be provided for providing overvoltage and earth fault current.

NGR Monitoring Solutions for Electrical Safety:

c) HRG/LRG System

One point of the supply is earthed through a Grounding Resistor/Impedance. HRG/LRG systems use the benefit of both IT & TN systems and is used is systems requiring limiting fault currents to specified limits.

Safety in Mines and Oil & Gas industry in general is of paramount importance and is strictly governed by International and National Standards and Regulations. Electric power supplies from utilities are taken at medium or high voltages and converted and distributed to various loads at the required voltages. Based on the requirements of Surface/Underground mines electric power supply and distribution system use solidly grounded, high resistance grounded or ungrounded power supplies at various low & medium voltages. Electric equipments are either fixed or portable or require to be shifted as excavation progresses. Further large machines like excavators, shovels and draglines for excavation & material transfer are used. Trailing Cables of various types and sizes are utilized for supplying motive

electric power to these machines. These cables also carry the protective earth conductor for safety requirements. Cables run through rough terrain and are subjected to harsh environment and physical damage. To minimize the risk of fire, explosion and shock, earth leakage currents and insulation resistance is to be continuously monitored. Alarm and protective measures to be installed whenever leakage currents and insulation resistance values are exceeded beyond prescribed limits as required by standards & regulations. The Indian Electricity Rule 116-1 for mines says “The earth fall current should not be more than 50 Amp in mines in any condition”. The suitable Neutral Grounding Resistance (NGR) should be installed between neutral point (star point) and the ground to restrict the earth fault current to 50 Amps. In Oil & Gas industry electrical installations are designed to limit the fault current within 750mA. In outdoor distribution station there are many possibilities of damage to the neutral grounding connections due to various environmental effects causing open circuit or burning of NGR. This is a very dangerous continuity i.e., totally floating type. This may also result in failure of earth-leakage protection operating through neutral CT as the leakage current may not be able to flow through open circuit of neutral grounding connection. To prevent this type of failure, Fail Safe Relays must be installed. The fail-safe relay will continuously monitor the continuity of NGR and neutral grounding connections and will trip the feeder circuit breaker as and when any open circuit occurs in neutral grounding connection or in NGR. The fail-safe relay will ensure fail safe operation of neutral grounding system.

Reasons for limiting the fault current

Reduce burning and melting effects in faulted electric equipment, such as switchgear, transformers, cables and rotating machines.

• Reduce mechanical stresses in circuits and apparatus carrying fault currents.

• Reduce electric-shock hazards to personnel caused by stray ground fault currents in the ground return path.

• Reduce arc blast or flash hazard to personnel who may have accidentally caused or who happen to be in close proximity to the fault current.

• Reduce the momentary line-voltage dip occasioned by the occurrence and clearing of a ground fault.

• Secure control of transient over voltages while at the same time avoiding the shutdown of a faulty circuit on the occurrence of the first ground fault.

Continuous monitoring of the NGR System with Bender NGRM500:

In 2017, Bender presented a new global benchmark for monitoring the grounding resistance (NGR) in HRG systems (high resistance grounded systems) with the NGRM700. This benchmark has since been successfully launched on the market and is being continually optimized. Bender expanded its portfolio even further in 2019 by an additional device for monitoring the grounding resistance: the NGRM500. The measuring technology of the NGRM500 is technologically just as powerful as the NGRM700. The NGRM500 series is capable of AC- and DC-sensitive measuring technology for the analysis and safe operation of the most modern types of loads in a resistance grounded system. The harmonics analysis of the residual currents with the associated freely configurable evaluations in the frequency range for the response values, which was first presented for the first time in the NGRM700, were also implemented in the NGRM500. They can be used for both notification and analysis purposes. In order to fulfil the plant operator's requirements, the Bender NGR monitors check the active and passive resistance as well as the current and voltage in the NGR. The limit values can be individually set according to customer-specific requirements and/or in accordance with regional regulations and specifications. This can be carried out as usual either directly on the device or via the standard web server included. The server provides faster access to the data as well as the possibility of carrying out initial analyses without the need for external software. All the data can be read via Modbus depending on the complexity of the plant, the available infrastructure, and the operator's preferences

56 NOVEMBER 2022 ELECTRICAL MIR OR R www.electricalmirror.net TECHNICal aRTIClE

Preamble

Earthing system plays a vital role in Power system protection, safety to men and equipment in the EHV Switch yards/sub stations. The earthing system in an EHV Switch yards/sub stations as a whole consists of;

i) an Earth grid which is formed by a mesh of a horizontal strip electrodes and vertical ground electrodes of adequate sizes buried in the earth, providing a common ground for electrical devices or metallic structures, usually in one specific location.

ii) Earth pits.

iii Risers from the earth mat to the equipment.

Integrity of this system means rendering service with reliability and loyalty in the power System. Any disconnection in continuity in the earthing grid is synonymous to breach in loyalty.

The authors have described some of the basic definitions like Earth potential rise, Equipotential bonding and concept/methodology of verifying integrity of Earthing system highlighting some case studies as well.

Key Words

Grounding, Equipotential bonding, GPR (Ground Potential Rise). Primary injection kit.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Brief description of earthing grid;

(i) Choice between Copper and M.S.: Prior to about half a century copper strips /rods were used in the earthing grids of HV and EHV switchyards. However, since a few decades the use of copper has been phased out by the Transmission utilities and in the present scenario MS flats/MS rods are being used on following counts;

• Cost-benefit analysis favours use of MS over Copper, despite being prone to corrosion.

• Copper is theft prone being a costly metal.

1.2 Earthing-grid

The Earth grid consists of a mesh of equally placed horizontal electrodes (MS Flats / solid rods) covering the whole switchyard area and some numbers of vertical rod-electrodes are dug underneath the ground from the point of crossing of horizontal conductors as per design. The whole earth grid is embedded below the surface of ground to the depth of 500 mm. Generally, a site of low resistivity is preferably selected for construction of the proposed sub-station, if available, however, it is the responsibility of the utility to construct the substation on any site made available to them, designing the earthing-grid it in such a way that all the parameters towards safety to men, equipment, material and the living beings around the vicinity of the substation are fulfilled

Figure1: Concept Earth-grid.

Note: Spreading of 40 mm Gravel to the height of 80 mm to150 mm reduces the Step and Touch potential [1]and also restricts the movements of snakes and other reptiles.

www.electricalmirror.net 57 NOVEMBER 2022 ELECTRICAL MIR ROR

a) Some of the recommended sizes of MS flat are shown in the table 1.

kV class Size of MS flat for Earth mat Size of MS flat for Risers

33kV 65x8 mm 50x6 mm

132kV 65x8 mm 50x6 mm

220kV 75x8 mm 65x8 mm

400kV 40 mm dia. solid rods 75x8 mm

Note: MS flat sizes/solid rods shown in the table 1 are as per MPPTCL’s practice, however, it may vary from utility to utility as per their approved designs.

b) Size of spikes and placement thereof; 25 mm dia. x 3000 mm and each spike shall be driven vertically at an interval of not less than 2 times the length of the rod (spike).

If the rods are too close, resistance area of one electrode will interfere with that of other resulting in no effective gain. Therefore, to avoid such a situation, the distance between two spikes(rods) is kept as 2 times the length of the rod.

ii) To earth the single phase EHV equipment viz; CVTs, CCs, PTs and LAs.

iii) To offer a low impedance path through the earth for the currents coming from ground faults, lightning strokes etc.

iv) To contain the Ground Potential Rise/Earth Potential Rise to safe limits.

v) To limit the touch and step potential within tolerable limits.

vi) To earth the metallic body of equipment of EHV S/s, structures, metallic water- pipe lines, metallic gas-pipe lines and metallic fencing etc. for establishing equipotential bonding.

vii) Providing safety of the living beings around the vicinity of the substation

viii) Discharging through Discharge-rod the induction / static voltages to the earth of de-energized equipment prior to maintenance or other any work to be conducted. Discharge rod is depicted the figure 3A & B.

[Note: This is very essential to safe guard work-men against fatal/non-fatal accidents

2.0 Function Of Earthing-Grid;

The earthing-system in the substations is vital. The main functions of earthing systems are as follows;

i) To provide earth connection to the neutrals of generators, transformers, capacitors banks and reactors.

3.0 Earth Potential Rise (Epr)

The maximum electrical potential that a substation earthing grid may attain relative to a distant grounding point assumed to be at the potential of remote earth. EPR/ GPR is the product of the magnitude of the grid current as a portion of the fault current, conducted to earth by the grounding system and the ground grid resistance.

EPR/GPR= IG X Rg,[2]

Where; IG =Df x Igf

Igf- Ground fault current, Df- Decrement factor dependent on the duration of the ground fault current in secs.

4.0 Maintenance Of Earthing System, General Practice:

Following activities are in vogue in most of the Transmission Utilities towards maintenance of the earthing system preferably in summer months.

• Cleaning the earth pits of any weeds or vegetation.

• The condition of tap for watering the earth pits.

• Cleaning of blackened spots/pitting-globules if any and tightening of nut- bolts of leads/flats firmly to the earth mat.

• Taking earth resistance of the earth pits.

• Welding is carried out, if required for strengthening the contacts of risers and other connections to the earth mat.

5.0 Earthing Of Transformer Neutral & L A

6.0 Equipotential Bonding

Equipotential bonding is essentially an electrical connection maintaining various exposed conductive parts at substantially the same potential. An earthed equipotential zone is the one within which exposed conductive parts and extraneous conductive parts are maintained at substantially same potential by bonding. Thus, under fault conditions, the difference in potential between simultaneously accessible exposed and extraneous parts will not cause electric shock.

Bonding is the practice of connecting all accessible metal work-whether associated with electrical installation (known as exposed metalworks) or not (extraneous metalworks) to the system earth.

In each EHV Switchyard, equipotential bonding is established connecting following to the earthing-grid of;

(i) each equipment in the switch yard. Such connection of bonding as sample cases have been shown with risers painted in green colour in the figures 6 A,6B & 6C.

(vi) conductive fencing and gates.

6.1 Importance Of Equipotential Bonding

As already mentioned that, “under fault conditions, the difference in potential between simultaneously accessible exposed and extraneous parts will not cause electric shock”. In other words, there is every possibility of experiencing shocks or equipment getting damaged/ failed, if the equipotential bond of the of equipment through the risers is lost with the earthing grid while attaining Earth Potential Rise consequent to heavy fault currents or lightening strokes.

7.0 Reasons For

Deterioration Of Earthing

System

A general practice of maintenance of earthing system which includes earth resistance test as well is a mere voltage drop across surrounding soil and does not give the physical condition of the electrodes. It is also an irony that the most of the suitable soil are low resistivity soil and most corrosive.

While in service the earth-mat is damaged during clearing the faults and discharging lightning currents, resulting into interrupting continuity and introducing high resistance across the bonds. Thus, hampering its capability to render successful and faithful service thereafter.

8.0 What Is Earth-Integrity Test And When To Perform This Test?

(i) The integrity test, as the name defines, this test verifies the healthiness of the Earthing System so that it should render its service with loyalty.

This test verifies the continuity between two different ground points of the grid. In this way, healthiness of the earth grid is verified confirming that it can carry fault currents successfully. This test should be essentially performed in the old switch yards.

Note: The situation mentioned in clause 7.0 can be detected with the Earth-integrity test only.

(i) This test should also be essentially performed after completion of the job of earthing grid in a new substation prior to energizing it, for verifying that none of the joints /connections are inadvertently left unconnected or welding/ bracing job is not properly done.

8.1 Earth-Integrity Test Procedure

i) Requirement of Items and supply arrangement; a) 1 ph. LT-AC supply, b) Primary injection kit ;230 V,50 Hz, 2 kVA, capable of supplying 200A for 1-3 minutes.

up to 100 A then it is a clear indication of that the Joint is deteriorated and needs improvement.

k) If at some location, the current is not being injected at all, confirms that there is discontinuity of connection with the earthing grid.

l) Method of calculation:

(a) Voltage observed while testing object (Vtest) voltage when loose ends of the both the cables were shorted together (Vsrt) and 100A current was injected in both the cases = difference in voltage (Vrg).

Therefore, Resistance of the object including Earth grid (Reg),

Reg = (Vtest-Vsrt)/100 Ω

Note:

a) Extend 1 ph.LT- AC supply to the Primary injection kit.

b) Connect 02 Nos. leads to the output terminals of the primary Injection kit.

c) Switch on the kit.

d) Short the loose end of the cables.

e) Inject 100A current and simultaneously measure the voltage drop at the PI kits output terminals.

Calculate the resistance as per ohm’s law (ie R=V/A). This calculated resistance is the burden taken by the leads.

f) Now, clamp one cable to an earth-pit and the other cable to the riser/or to the point of section of earth mat to be tested.

g) Inject the current to the extent of 100A and simultaneously measure the voltage drop at the PI output terminals.

h) Test all the equipment in the vicinity of the first one in line with the procedure described in g).

i) The voltage drop shall be almost equal in the vicinity of all the points of test..

j) At some points the injection of current does not rise

a) It is a practice, followed in MPPTCL to verify the healthiness of the earthing-grid by performing Earthing-grid integrity test in the Sub-stations more than 20 years old at least one in a year.

b) It is also before charging of any new EHV substation.

8.2 Rectification job:

(i) Afresh earthing was done in the Bay No.4 by laying MS flats from the 132 kV. Bus isolator and connecting the same to the old earth-mat.

(ii) Additional earthing was done by wherever the resistance was found in the range of 0.0303 to 0.0318 Ω.

(iii) After carrying out rectification /revamping jobs as stated in (i) & (ii), healthiness thereof was verified by performing earth integrity test and have been found in order.

9.0 Recommendations:

(i) In view of above, it is recommended that the earth integrity test be carried out in yearly basis in the EHV substations (more than 20 years old), which could identify the status of earth connectivitybonding with structure & its equipment. It is also recommended to be performed in new substations (before commissioning thereof).

(ii) In view of importance narrated about testing/ verification of integrity of grounding system in IEEE 80- 2013 and IEEE 81-2012, test kits for use in induction-prone EHV switch-yards have been developed by some of the leading manufacturers of global repute. Such test-kits can be procured by the interested Utilities as the same are available in the Indian market too.

1. Introduction

For the last few months, the response of the readers to the case studies on various incidents is overwhelming. Hence this month we are again choosing the write up on similar kind of studies for developing the synchronization of practical observation to the theoretical concepts. The analysis of each incident being supported by actual observations had been described during the situation to add awareness amongst the operation, testing and commissioning engineers to know the cause of problems and be helpful for easy rectification of the problems. This can also help to develop economic schemes for the smooth running of the operation and control system in the Grid Sub-Station.

Technical Analysis

Observation (1) :- For ODD taps contact (A) and (B) being connected together touches to a particular terminal of regulating winding. So, the circuit behaves as a general circuit and takes as usual magnetizing current and results correct magnetizing induced emf for magnetic balance test.

Observation (2) :- For EVEN taps, contact (A) and (B) get connected to a part of the regulating winding and shorted through reactance as shown in Fig 2.1. So this circuit results certain reflection current and flux on the other side, for which the magnetising current becomes more and magnetic balance induced voltages are disturbed.

Analysis of Current flow

For the above wrong connection, the current flow in different circuits are explained below (Fig- 2.2.2). Accordingly, the currents were obtained as mentioned in the table.

The short-circuit or wrong connection link disturbed the circuit connection, resulting with shorting of the Primary side winding of Auxiliary CT. So the current on the secondary was also got disturbed and resulted with NO CURRENT FLOW IN THE LT SIDE of differential relay as like shown in the drawing.

Observation and Investigation: The incident was inquired and came to know that Grid staffs were measuring the current on the potential point for which the terminal got shorted through ammeter. So also damage resulted to the multi meter. The cable was dis-connected and replaced by a good one.

Action Taken

1. DC load to CP (Control Panel) was getting extended from boost charger because of some problem on float charger during this incident on availing shutdown on the out-going 33 KV feeders in the Grid Sub-Station.

2. 33 KV feeders were charged one after another to extend supply extension to the consumers

3. Then the float charger was attended. After physical checking of equipments, it was found actuation of O/L relay. After resetting, the relay required voltage was made available across the load.

4. The charger was made ON. But this time again the same incident resulted. The cable leading to 84th cell from battery charger burnt again.

5. As required voltage was made available from boost charger, again the loads were kept to Boost Charger mode.

After 2nd time burning of the cable, the equipment and elements such connected were suspected faulty, Doubts on Puncture of BLOCKER DIODE ( D13), Malfunctioning of Contactor C1 ( AC) or C3 ( DC) Batteries from 84th cell to 110th cell.

Analysis of the Incident

2. The diode connected circuit is drawn as follows.

3. When AC supply is made OFF or for non-availability of AC supply to battery charger, the point A, B, C, and D being in connection with batteries provide required DC supply to the load as described below.

4. For such condition coil of the contactor C3 ( DC Contactor) gets supply of 220 V Dc from terminal A and closes the contactor C3 and allows the extension of supply to the load terminals. At the same time BLOCKER DIODE D13 becomes REVERSE BIASED and behaves like open circuit and terminal D gets directly extended to the load terminals.

5. But because of failure of Diode D13, terminals A and B i.e battery cells no 84 to 110 got direct short circuited through D13. So burning of the cable resulted

sparking of the point and final burning of the contact. It was replaced by the new design and performed OK without burning as like shown below.

Being the key link for delivery of power between the purpose of generation and therefore the end-user, transformers are witnessing buoyant growth on account of varied reforms within the Indian power sector. Power transformers area unit deployed in transmission networks at high voltages, whereas the distribution networks install distribution transformers (DTs) at low voltages. Except for the Ujwal Discoms Assurance Yojana (UDAY) for operational and monetary turnaround of state-owned Power Distribution corporations (DISCOMs), a hundred per cent village electrification beneath Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), the government’s roadmap for accomplishment of 175 GW capability in renewable energy by 2022, and therefore the specialize in attaining ‘Power for All’ area unit stimulating the generation capability of the facility sector. In turn, the improved capability additions can step up the demand for transformers.

TechSci analysis Report on power and distribution transformers comes a growth at CAGR of 10.5 per cent throughout 2017-22. Beneath the 12th Five-Year set up, the govt. has targeted on growth of the country’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) network with considerably higher investments than previous Five-Year Plans, that is predicted to lead to strong growth of the facility and distribution transformers business over this era.

Further, the govt. comes like inexperienced Energy passageway for power generation from renewable sources would provides a boost to the general power and distribution electrical device installations within the country. India has conjointly entered into a technological collaboration with Federal Germany beneath that Germany would extend its technical help for upgrading India’s existing power system

and facilitate flow of renewable energy through the grid.

According to Indian Electrical and natural philosophy Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA), growth in power transformers is attributed to demand for top Voltage (HV) and further High Voltage (EHV) transformers with support from growth in exports also; whereas in distribution transformers, growth is semiconductor diode by domestic demand particularly rural electrification program.

Stumbling Blocks

Indian transformers business has been facing the varied challenges of convenience of adequate amount of material, testing facilities and mean force. Problems like high input price because of charge per unit, crude worth, and dealing capital management for MSME sector still are the hurdles within the sector.

According to International Copper Association of India (ICAI), the distribution electrical device business has had its own set of challenges within the past few years, chiefly rising out of reasons below:

• Mandatory certification of BIS as per IS1180 and MEPS through BEE’s Star labelling program that originally wasn't harmonized with national commonplace by BIS and discovered by utilities. The method conjointly didn't recognise tailor-made needs, usually of restricted amount, placed by industrial users.

• Dual certification by 2 government authorities created hurdles in polishing off sleek business. The electrical device producing cycle was conjointly neglected considering current orders beneath execution take four to twelve months or additional to complete.

www.electricalmirror.net 73 NOVEMBER 2022 ELECTRICAL MIR ROR

• Initial absence of clarifications on confusion created by higher than orders and modification on cards caused discord. It conjointly caused economic burden to those that followed rules and standards and left others accidentally unlawful.

• Unfair competition, because of abnormally low valuation pattern of some makers, who, in absence of correct social control and observance mechanism, were able to offer the particular product deviating from specification. Others area unit left with choices either to adopt unfair apply or with reduced margins or maybe loss of business.

• “After abundant required effort from numerous quarters matters seems like lightweight at finish of tunnel supported by electrification schemes of the central government. Even now, this can be dynamical at a slow pace, and it's suspected that utility electrical device business could also be affected, as several comes like DDUGVY, IPDS, Saubhagya etc area unit scheduled to be completed in 2019,” states Manas Kundu, Director (Energy Solutions), ICAI.

• Further, the misuse of warrantee or warranty amount insisted by the DISCOMs or utilities within the tender hurts the interests of the electrical device makers. DISCOMs or utilities area unit imposing warrantee or warranty amount for 60 to 66 months in their tender

documents against commonplace tips of Ministry of Power of 12 to 18 months. Because of the long warrantee or guarantee amount over 5 years backed by the bank guarantee, the income or capital limits of the makers gets adversely affected, and day to day business transactions suffer. “Moreover, the utilities or DISCOMs don't adhere to correct maintenance schedule of the delirium tremens leading to premature failure of the electrical device, and therefore the manufacturer has got to replace the electrical device freed from charge at intervals the warrantee amount,” states U C Misra, President, Indian Transformers makers Association (ITMA) and former Director, power system Corporation of Republic of India Ltd. “The matter has already been delivered to the notice of authorities at the Central Government and state power utilities. during this association, the utilities or DISCOMs might deliberate to insure their assets i.e. delirium tremens towards failure on the far side the warrantee amount for any claims, and warrantee ought to be restricted as per commonplace tips i.e. twelve to eighteen months,” he any adds.

• In addition to the present, delay in payments by utilities or DISCOMs has aggravated the issues of the electrical device business. It’s a cascading result on the assembly method and discharge of liabilities towards banks and

different establishments. “Online payment on delivery of the instrumentation must be ensured as per the Prime Minister’s commitment in numerous forums. Further, the utilities or DISCOMs area unit suggested at national level to induce them registered with the assets Exchange of Republic of India Ltd (RXIL), a venture between SIDBI and NSE, so as to facilitate prompt payments to the MSME industries for doing business with ease,” advises Misra.

• In distribution transformers, several tiny makers area unit slowly shift over to producing of the massive capability class transformers, therefore increasing the unionized participants’ base. “This makes the market additional competitive and sensitive to cost instead of quality. If associate in nursing organisation focuses on quality producing of transformers, they cannot sustain the competition because of reduced cut-throat rates quoted by the tiny players,” informs M Vijayakumaran, Senior electrical device knowledgeable, Primemeiden.

Availability of CRGO steel

• The production of transformers needs cold-rolled grainoriented (CRGO) steel because the key material. procural of CRGO steel is one amongst the key bottlenecks for the transformers business as this material isn't created in Republic of India, and therefore the business has got to

rely upon imports for its demand. The electrical device business is facing the deficiency of best material CRGO. The value of CRGO accounts for around 25 per cent of the entire cost of the assembly of transformers.

• With the social control of internal control orders delivery CRGO, beside distribution transformers beneath obligatory certification of BIS with energy potency levels outlined, the demand for top quality CRGO steel has swollen manifold. This successively raised pressure on suppliers, importers and producing mills too.

• Worldwide, the assembly, offer and worth of CRGO are dominated by around fourteen to fifteen mills settled in USA, Japan, Germany, India, UK, Russia, Poland, Brazil and China. Per ITMA, the world production of CRGO stands at 35 lakh metric tons each year whereas Republic of India presently needs concerning 4 lakh metric tons. India’s demand for CRGO is probably going to accelerate to 7.5 lakh metric tons each year throughout the amount 2017-2022 as power generation from nuclear, hydro, solar, wind etc are over close to 400 GW. Recently TKES German Company at Nasik has started production of concerning 10 thousand metric loads of CRGO that is of no significance for the electrical device business. “The government has been endeavouring for the institution of plant in India which will facilitate to ease our position. The technology isn't

simply out there. Tata Steel Great Britain and Arcelor Mittal in jap Europe have technical data. However, they're not returning forward to assist India. The govt. has started R&D comes, however no serious efforts area unit being created to ease the provision of CRGO material within the right earnest,” informs Misra from ITMA.

• “In order to keep going the high import worth and deficiency crisis, the govt. has taken a significant decide to develop smart quality CRGO publicly sector steel corporations with active support from celebrated CRGO manufacturer POSCO,” states Vijayakumaran.

• The convenience issue was because of obligatory BIS certification at completely different mills settled overseas. This issue is resolved as the majority mills area unit are certified currently. Hence, the provision of upper grades is improved. However, the challenge for MSME sector makers continues, as all of them area unit usually ineffective of mercantilism directly from the mills and rely upon importers with core cutting lines and different suppliers, informs Rajesh Joshi, CEO, Tristar Technocrates.

Failure Rate of Distribution electrical device

The failure of distribution electrical device is one amongst the key considerations for the electrical device business. The failure rate formally stands at fourteen per cent. per International Copper Association and Frost & Sullivan Distribution electrical device Market huntsman, supported formally out there knowledge, the failure rate at pan-India level stands at around 13 per cent, of which, around 80 per cent of the unsuccessful distribution electrical devices area unit repaired and therefore the remaining area unit replaced by a replacement distribution transformer unit, ensuing into around Rs a pair of 2,600 large integer expense once a year.

The causes for failure area unit multifaceted like:

• Non-adher ence to national standards and tweaking of standards at some level

• Compromised procural

• Improper producing practices

• Inadequate internal control (QC) superintendence

• Inadequate operation & maintenance practices

• Aged heri tage assets

• Non-availability of funds.

Operating conditions like electrical device overload, through faults, etc typically lead to electrical device failure, lightness a desire for electrical device protection functions, like over excitation protection and temperature-based protection. Extended functioning of the electrical device beneath abnormal conditions like faults or overloads will compromise the lifetime of the electrical device. Adequate protection ought to be provided for faster isolation of the electrical device beneath such conditions. the kind of protection used ought to scale back the disconnection time for faults at intervals the electrical device and minimise the chance of ruinous breakdown to modify ultimate repair, suggests Pradeep Azad, director, UP Transformers (India) Ltd.

Nationwide efforts like QC order, increased warrantee, quality input materials, and few islanded efforts in quality producing apply, quality management apply etc area unit on to handle responsibility in delirium tremens. Monumental economic burden is caused to the country because of premature DT failure inflicting CAPEX readying each 5 years for associate in nursing quality that ought to offer minimum twenty years of life technically. This conjointly affects public utilities tariff to rise as against the principle embarked on within the Act earlier.

The OEMs and utilities have to be compelled to see one another as not adversaries however be part of hands to make sure growth of the facility distribution sector in making property infrastructure. Customers too should get hold of what they use i.e electricity, one’s lifeline nowadays, advises Manas Kundu. ICAI has established associate in nursing innovative conception to allow new life to previous heritage transformers in raising their responsibility. This has not solely resulted in life extension however conjointly extra kVA at optimum marginal cost to the utilities whereas meeting energy potency levels modern with prevailing standards.

ITMA has ready tips each for makers and users of transformers so as to avoid this prodigious loss at national level, and

therefore the same has been submitted to the Ministry of Power and Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for issue of comprehensive tips for the DISCOMs wherever there's hardly any attention on operation and maintenance of the distribution system. The upkeep employees of DISCOMs ought to be hypersensitized and trained. This can positively build marked improvement in failure rate, informs Misra of ITMA.

In order to boost the standard and overall responsibility of delirium tremens, tangency testing as suggested by CEA ought to be created obligatory for reducing failure rate. However it's not achieved because of limitations in facility for playing a similar and value implication, states M Vijayakumaran.

Outlook

The government’s plans of generation of renewable energy and 24*7 Power for All can generate the positive growth chance for transformers. It’s expected that over 85,000 ckt. klick of transmission lines and 230,000 MVA of electrical device capability area unit expected to be intercalary to the grid by 2021-22. Further, electrical device demand apart from utility business is proportional to industrial growth.

The demand of transformers is endlessly propelled because of addition of generation capability. There’s a desire to extend per capita consumption to an affordable level from one thousand KWH to international commonplace level say 2000 KWH, which is able to necessitate multiple fold growth in generation, transmission and distribution network. Currently with emergence of demand of charging stations for electrical vehicles at the national level, the electrical device demand can see any growth, states Misra from ITMA.

Kundu from ICAI envisages the expansion of the electrical device business at moderate rate of half dozen to seven per cent year-on-year given the central schemes reaching completion during this year intercalary with election knock at the door EM
