PUBLISHER’S LETTER
O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum
N
othing heralds the arrival of the Christmas season more than the sight of your neighborhood Christmas tree lot! Usually “sprouting up” the day after Thanksgiving, these tree lots offer one of the last great bastions of unique commerce: the art of haggling. Finding the perfect tree, getting a dollar or two knocked off the price AND getting the guy to tie it up on top of your car is a rite of passage for most men. You do it the way your dad taught you because THAT’S the way HIS dad taught HIM! But buying a Christmas tree and getting it home is the easy part. The real trick isn’t picking the right tree. It’s getting it into your house. With that in mind, I have decided to supply you with the following, never before shared, 15-point Christmas tree set up plan invented by my grandfather, J. B. Butler back in 1938.
1. Cut the cords that bind the tree to the roof of your car. Allow them to snap back and strike you in the eye.
9. Drag the tree away from the door so that you can enter with the tree facing in the right direction. 10. Once inside, fill the tree stand with water. 11. Knock all of the water out of the tree stand because you forgot you’re supposed to fill the tree stand after you put the tree in it. 12. Curse. 13. Your tree should now be in the stand. Notice the fallen needles that have reduced your tree to half the size it was when you bought it. 14. Down seven cups of eggnog to settle your nerves. 15. Slur your curses.
2. Curse. 3. Slowly pull the tree toward you. 4. Wobble under the tree’s weight for a few seconds, then fall down. 5. Curse. 6. Stand up and notice the fresh scratches in the roof of your car.
O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree @%*&*!!! From the EIL Family to your family, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
7. Curse.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year 28 Market Street, Suite 124 St. Simons Island, GA 912.638.5100 10

8. Drag the tree to your front door. Spend 15 minutes figuring out how to open the door while simultaneously getting the tree through it.

THE SYMPHONY SOCIETY, CABARET CHAIRS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS INVITE YOU TO come celebrate the centennial of the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age at Cabaret 2020. This annual signature event benefiting The Coastal Symphony of Georgia will be a Gatsby Gala that takes place in The Cloister Ballroom on Sea Island, Friday, January 24th. Don the festive attire of the era (tuxes optional) and join in the revelry at this intimate affair.
“Men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars.”
Cabaret Steering Committee (from left): Susan Garrett, Jan Carriker, Cabaret Chair Gail McCarty, Frances McCrary, Nancy Pandolfi, Janice Lamattina, Sue Cansler, JoAnn Frick. (Not pictured, Co-Chair Sharon Flores.)
THE EVENING WILL BEGIN AT 6:00 P.M. WITH A COCKTAIL RECEPTION AND SILENT AUCTION. This will allow guests to sip champagne while they mix and mingle and peruse the many items offered for bidding, including exquisite art and jewelry that Daisy would have thought was divine. After greetings are exchanged and libations are poured, a seated dinner will be served. (continues)
DECEMBER 2019

Cabaret Chair Gail McCarty and Coastal Symphony of Georgia President Michael Frick are ready to revive the Roaring Twenties for the glittering evening of festivities.
“The bar is in full swing, and floating rounds of cocktails permeate the garden outside, until the air is alive with chatter and laughter, and casual innuendo and introductions forgotten on the spot, and enthusiastic meetings between women who never knew each other’s names.” Silent Auction Committee Member Mary Hitt and President of The Symphony Society, John Harper, urge you to bid generously on the fabulous items offered at auction. Funds raised here allow the Symphony to continue to offer world-class musical performances under talented conductor and artistic director Michelle Merrill.
DECEMBER 2019
31
A Live Auction of unique experiences will be held with Keenan Carter and Dave Snyder acting as Auctioneers. One of the featured packages is a one-week stay in beautiful southern Tuscany. Enjoy the Tuscan Dream in a two-bedroom villa in the ancient hilltop town of Manciano. The Honorary Chair of this year’s event is local treasure and patron of the arts Mildred Huie Wilcox, a woman who is no stranger to opulent ballrooms and glamorous galas.

“The lights grow brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun, and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music, and the opera of voices pitches a key higher. Laughter is easier minute by minute, spilled with prodigality, tipped out at a cheerful word. The groups change more swiftly, swell with new arrivals, dissolve and form in the same breath ….”

The entertainment for the evening will be
jazz,
jazz,
jazz!
performed by the Jordan Gilman Septet. Not to be confused with the lovely ladies seen here, the septet of professional musicians and Symphony members was assembled as a group for this event due to their jazz talents. Jordan Gilman will provide vocals and play the saxophone, while Alexander Hernandez will take double-duty on clarinet and tenor saxophone. For the brass section, Greg Balut will be on trumpet and Diego Herrada adds trombone. Aaron Lehrian will tickle the keys on piano, while percussion is provided by Luis Ocasio, and Stan Piper picks up the bass line. ictims of domestic violence often feel like they have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and that there is no way they can escape from their abuser. Where can they go when home is no longer a safe place for them or their children? How can they step out the door to freedom, when they are shackled inside by fear? Even if they realize that it is more dangerous to stay, there is a sense 38

of hopelessness, as there is no clear pathway to independence. This was true decades ago and, to some extent, remains true today. Over 30 years ago, there was no worldwide web to search for safe avenues of escape. There was no social media or internet. These have proven to be powerful tools in exploring options when battling domestic violence and educating the general public of how prevalent domestic abuse is. But, more importantly to us locally, there was no organization that provided a safe, secure shelter in the Golden Isles. In 1982, due to the insight by several caring people, the first of many steps were taken to provide a safe place for battered women and their children to flee. That is when the Glynn Community Crisis Center came into being. Back then, domestic violence was not something that was discussed
in public (or anywhere else, for that matter). There was no safe way to quietly, secretly look for options to flee. According to Kay Hampton, who has been involved with Glynn Community Crisis Center since 1991, a lot of that silence still occurs. The perceived shame and embarrassment of choices made tend to keep the victim from seeking help. “There weren’t the communication tools available 30 or 40 years ago that there are today,” she added. “Now, many can research their options on the internet and social media.” In 1983, Amity House first opened its doors to provide shelter to those fleeing to escape their abuser. A 4-room shelter at the time, the offerings at Amity House were basic, but provided a safe haven. Since that time, the Glynn Community Crisis Center has grown into an organization that not only provides shelter to both female and male victims of
domestic violence, but also provides a wide range of services to victims who do not require emergency shelter. The GCCC website lists all the services it offers, including emergency shelter at Amity House, transitional housing program at Hope House, victim advocacy, support groups and counseling, legal assistance, financial assistance and budgeting and relocation assistance. The Safe Date program, an educational and prevention program that raises the students’ awareness of dating abuse, its causes and consequences, is available for teens through the area middle and high schools. Dottie Bromley, Executive Director of the Glynn Community Crisis Center feels that education is a critical component of what the they do.

abuse has expanded from being just physical to emotional, mental and financial. Common abusive tactics include physical violence, sexual violence, isolation, economic abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, reproductive coercion, and stalking. GCCC is currently developing a program on safe use of digital technology and the long-term ramifications of the digital world. Over the years, the Glynn Community Crisis Center has addressed barriers that exist for victims to ensure ongoing safety and financial security. Now, it is necessary to also address and educate about the positives and the negatives of the internet and social media. In response to the need to be more aware of how to safely use today’s technology, The Glynn Community Crisis Center website has a big red button that says ESCAPE. The ESCAPE button allows the computer user to quickly exit the site, if the abuser comes into the room. The widespread use of the internet and social media, particularly Facebook and Instagram, is changing the nature of domestic abuse. This is both good and bad. As important and beneficial as social media might be in researching safe havens and spreading the word about domestic abuse, it can also have hidden risks to victims. Although more options are now available to victims of abuse, more options to control and track are also avail-

able to the abuser. There are more than 200 apps and services that can be used by abusers, ranging from basic location tracking to gathering texts and secretly recording their target. Abusers can use social media to control, stalk, manipulate and harass their victim as a way to publicly embarrass and intimidate. In the social media age, when image and reputation are everything, perpetrators can devastate their partner or ex-partner psychologically, socially and financially, while remaining cloaked in
anonymity. Credit cards can be opened in the victim’s name, without their knowledge, with all charges becoming their responsibility, even possibly ruining their credit score. Where years ago, the imprisonment by the abuser was through physical isolation, now the abuser can remain in control. No matter where the victim may go, there is a potential virtual prison. phones cautiously, be aware of possible spyware on cell phones and computers, remove all GPS devices from vehicles, change email and other passwords frequently, and clear browser viewing history. Ultimately, addressing domestic violence against women and men must include not only the most recognized forms of abuse, but also the more abstract, such as various technology and social media usage ramifications across both public and private areas. It has been through community support that the Glynn Community Crisis Center has been able to expand its programs and reach in order to meet its client needs. “We have worked hard to build relationships in the
community, and our community partners are willing to work with us to see that our clients have the means and opportunity to move forward,” said Dottie. “We still have so much more work to do to raise awareness. The unfortunate events reported by the media over the last several years have had enormous impact,” she added. Kay, Charmaine and Dottie all agree community awareness and garnering their support is the main element of the Glynn Community Crisis Center’s success in expanding and providing the essential services to their domestic violence clients. The Glynn Community Crisis Center’s A Taste of Glynn will be held on January 19,
2020 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort. Along with the culinary tasting, there will be a Silent Auction, which will offer a variety of items ranging from vacations, jewelry and original art to gourmet delicacies. While enjoying the finest food in the region, attendees help to provide vital programs and shelter for those building a new life free from abuse and fear. Tax Tips By Ben P. Lee, CPA, CFE, CFF, CGMA, CGFM, CGFO
I
t is now that time of year to do your tax planning for your 2019 Business and Individual returns. It is very smart to set up an appointment as soon as you can before December 31, 2019. No one can help reduce your tax burden for 2019 after the end of the year!
Your first step should be to make an appointment with your CPA and get him all the information regarding your 2019 income and tax deductions to date. He can then prepare a tax projection for 2019 and this will give you the ability to do some strategy planning together to take advantage of the tax law to save you taxes. This article gives you some tips and ideas for planning and reducing your tax burden. It is not comprehensive of all the tax areas and tax planning tips and not intended to substitute for a visit to your CPA, but may be a helpful guide to some credits about which you might to be aware. BUSINESSES: Inventory Accounting The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) exempts certain taxpayers from the requirement to keep inventories. Specifically, taxpayers, other than tax shelters, meeting the $25 million gross receipts test of §448(c) are not required to account for inventories under §471, but rather may use a method of accounting for inventories that either 1) treats inventories as non-incidental materials and supplies, or 2) conforms to the taxpayer’s treatment of inventories on the taxpayer’s “Applicable Financial Statement” or if the taxpayer does not have an “Applicable Financial Statement,” the method of accounting used in the taxpayer’s books and records prepared in accordance with the taxpayer’s accounting procedures. ‘Consistent with prior and present law, a deduction is generally permitted for the cost 44
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
of non-incidental materials and supplies in the taxable year in which they are first used or are consumed in the taxpayer’s operations. See Treas. Reg. sec. 1.162-3(a)(1). As the provision allows a taxpayer to treat inventories as nonincidental materials and supplies, a taxpayer may also be able to elect to deduct such non-incidental materials and supplies in the taxable year the amount is paid under the de minimis safe harbor election of Treas. Reg. sec. 1.263(a)-1(f ). Under such election, a taxpayer with an applicable financial statement that has written accounting procedures in place that treat as an expense amounts paid for property costing less than a specified dollar amount may deduct amounts paid for non-incidental materials and supplies at the time of payment if the amount paid for the property does not exceed $5,000 per invoice. See Treas. Reg. sec. 1.263(a)-1(f )(1)(i)(C) and (ii)(C). If a taxpayer elects to apply the de minimis safe harbor, the taxpayer must apply such safe harbor to all materials and supplies that otherwise meet the requirements of Treas. Reg. sec. 1.263(a)-1(f ). Cash Balance Plan Develop a Cash Balance Plan stand alone or add as an element of your 401(k) and profit sharing plan. Reduce your business taxes and/ or personal taxes and increase your personal savings. A Cash Balance Plan can be a good retirement savings vehicle for owners of successful businesses with steady revenue. It is an IRS-qualified Defined Benefit retirement plan that can help businesses and owners realize more tax deductions and savings as much as 4x greater than a 401(k) plan. A Cash Balance Plan works best when combined with both a 401(k) and a Profit Sharing Plan to allow business owners and employees to save more toward retirement. Cash Balance Plans will typically allow for substantially higher contributions than 401(k) plans. These
higher contributions are tax deductible by the business, no matter the size of the business or number of owners. The Cash Balance Contribution is based on age and requires an actuarial computation. Unlike 401(k), which is a percentage of salaries, elective deferrals and have a small limit to the contributions. Business owners enjoy some flexibility under a Cash Balance Plan. The owner has some control over which employees they can contribute for and how much (subject to IRS non-discrimination rules). Consult with your CPA or retirement plan representative to discuss this option. INDIVIDUALS: Charitable Donations Tax deductible donations are contributions of money or goods to a tax-exempt organization such as a charity. Tax deductible donations can reduce taxable income. To claim tax deductible donations on your taxes, you must itemize on your tax return by filing Schedule A of IRS Form 1040. In general, you can deduct up to 50% of your adjusted gross income via charitable donations, but you may be limited to 20% or 30% depending on the type of contribution and the organization (contributions to certain private foundations, veterans organizations, fraternal societies, and cemetery organizations come with a lower limit, for instance). The limit applies to all donations you make throughout the year, no matter how many organizations to which you donate. Contributions that exceed the limit can often be deducted on your tax returns over the next five years, or until they’re gone, through a process called a carryover. Your charitable giving will only qualify for a tax deduction if it goes to a tax-exempt organization, as defined by section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Examples
of qualified institutions include religious organizations, Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, nonprofit educational agencies, museums, volunteer fire companies and organizations that maintain public parks. The IRS website has a list of all the qualifying organizations. Check it before you donate. Conservation Easements If you need a large donation deduction, you might want to consider the option of donating land for conservation easements. Land donations, particularly for conservation, can offer positive returns. In 2015, Congress enacted one of the most powerful conservation measures in decades: the enhanced federal tax incentive for conservation easement donations. In the late 1970s, Congress added section 170(h) allowing landowners to claim a tax deduction of conservation easements to a Qualified Land Trust. In 2006, Congress extended the deduction, and in 2015, Congress made the law enhanced and permanent. This bipartisan enhancement in the law was for the purpose of encouraging landowners to use this large tax deduction as an incentive to promote greater private funding for conservation. The law allows landowners, partnerships, and Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) to take a Charitable Donation Deduction for the value of the donated conservation easement. The taxpayer can
offset up to 50 percent (100 percent for farmers and ranchers) of their adjusted gross income as a charitable deduction. The remainder of the deduction can be carried over for 15 years, or until it is consumed, whichever is sooner. Coastal CPAs, LLC has many years of experience regarding conservation easements. We can give you further information if you’re interested. Tax Credits Be aware of tax credits you might be eligible for or can get qualified for before year end. The lists that follows is probably not all of the possible tax credits for Federal and State, but does list most of them. The Man Behind the Numbers 912-638-5161 • seaislandproperties.com
OVER THE YEARS, Elegant Island Living has met with Patrick Dunn
of Sea Island Properties in his position as the top producing agent in Glynn County to talk about real estate on St. Simons and Sea Island. Patrick has held that status since 2012 with more than $560 million in sales and pending contracts. His client list includes top PGA Tour players, major corporate CEOs, and former Congressmen, among numerous other buyers and sellers who have become friends. In our meetings with Patrick, we have discussed the health and status of the market and what practices are required to succeed in today’s real estate environment. But this year, we decided to get more personal by sharing a closer look at the man behind the numbers.
F
irst, a little history. Patrick grew up vacationing on Sea Island with his parents Mike and Ellen Dunn since 1979. In 1989, his family purchased a home and moved here full time. Patrick’s wife, Susan, and her family moved from Atlanta to Sea Island in 1989 also. The entire Dunn family is active in local organizations, at the St. Simons Community Church, and in the Sea Island and St. Simons Island communities. They are proud to call this home. Patrick became a licensed Georgia real estate agent in 2005. Until 2007, he worked with the Peachtree Group in Atlanta, primarily in land acquisition with a focus on obtaining tracts of land for high-end, second home residential communities. He joined the Sea Island Properties team in 2007 and has excelled at representing buyers and sellers in residential real estate transactions on Sea Island and St. Simons Island.
46
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
While Patrick’s successful numbers speak volumes, his impressive roster of clients and what they share about working with him say even more. We’ll let their words tell the story. Dick Williams, General Manager of the Cincinnati Reds, said, “I have had a long-standing personal friendship with Patrick. However, that was not the only reason I turned to him for advice when I began looking for a second home on Sea Island. He and his wife were both raised on Sea Island so he has a very unique perspective to offer on the subtle nuances of the various properties and locations that came up for sale during our search. He and I had numerous conversations about what would fit for our family and he was committed to making sure we found it.” He added, significantly, “The pleasant surprise was how he stayed in touch after the transaction and made sure we got connected to all the right professionals to begin working on our new house project. I am happy to recommend Patrick as a resource.”
Since we at EIL recall Patrick always stressing the importance of providing an amazing client experience that includes consistent communication and follow-up even after a real estate transaction is complete, the fact that he provided that type of service was no surprise at all. Exceeding clients’ expectations is how Patrick differentiates himself from the pack. Peter Millar Chairman and CEO Scott Mahoney echoes those sentiments, describing his family’s experience with Patrick as they searched for a second home on Sea Island as very enjoyable and productive. Mahoney said, “Patrick immediately understood our needs and intuitively pointed us in the right direction, answering all of our questions throughout the process. His professionalism, knowledge of the Sea Island real estate market, and his ability to build genuine relationships is unparalleled! Not only did he find exactly the home we want, but has continued to be a friend and valuable resource for many other needs. These are just a
few of many reasons why I would recommend Patrick to anyone looking on the island.” We’ll wrap it up with words from a man wellrespected not just here on the island, but in his profession, and around the world, our own former Ryder Cup Team Captain and PGA Tour legend, Davis Love III. Davis has known Patrick personally for many years and has worked with him on several real estate ventures. He describes Patrick as “the consummate professional who has the experience, expertise and market knowledge to represent the needs of his clients with great integrity and confidentiality.” He asserts, “It is no surprise to me that he has evolved into one of the most successful residential real estate sales associates in the country. He is dedicated and committed to listening and serving the needs of his clients. Therefore, he will continue to be recognized and respected as the top agent in our marketplace.” I think this gives us all a better picture of who Patrick is and why he continues to be the top producing agent in Glynn County. We’re not going to ask him to look into a crystal ball for the market this year, because we’re certain that he can create positive results for a buyer or seller, no matter the status of the market. He is passionate about his job and this community
and is dedicated to providing exceptional professional service. When asked for fun how he likes to celebrate closing a large transaction, he grins and says, “By moving on to the next one.”
Patrick Dunn’s office is located at Sea Island Properties, 351 Sea Island Road, St. Simons Island. He can be reached at 912.222.0142 or by email at patrickdunn@seasisland.com.

o you spilled a little wine on that cute new blouse you wore to yesterday’s GNO and that great jacket you picked up last year is ready to be worn now that it’s cooler, but it smells a little musty from sitting in the closet. You check their care labels and see “Dry Clean Only.” Now what? Michael Cannon of Cannon’s Coastal Cleaners says the best advice he can offer is to follow the directions on the labels! “Designer and fashionable clothing bear this care label which describes fabrics that may shrink, change colors or lose their shape if washed in water. In order to care for these garments the best way possible, it’s essential that you dry clean them.” He explains, “Dry cleaning is a cleaning process for clothing and textiles that uses a solvent rather than water. As a Sanitone Certified Master Dry Cleaner that uses state of the art dry cleaning and laundry equipment, the professionals at Cannon’s Coastal Cleaners are experienced in providing the best care possible for each one of your ‘Dry Clean Only’ and laundry garments.” He adds, “Customers will often think that by using an old wives’ tale cleaning tip or pre-treating a stain is helping. This can often be the worse thing to do. Blotting a stain to remove excess is fine, however, using remedies such as soda water, salt, or hair spray is only creating another stain for cleaners to remove. Some of the home remedies can actually set or make stains harder, and even impossible, to remove. Color loss may also occur due to
improper treatment. The best thing to do is to bring the garment in as soon as possible and explain exactly what the stain is so that it can be treated accordingly.” Coastal Cleaners was purchased by Eldridge and Bobbie Cannon in 1993, only a year after it opened. The Cannon family motto is “Service is our Business.” They pride themselves on upholding that with a full range of services, convenience, and quality customer service.
Michael Cannon says, “We are here to advise and assist customers with any and all needs for the care and cleaning of their garments.” In 2020, Michael will purchase and take over ownership of the family business. It should be a seamless transition, since the business is in his blood. Michael moved with his parents to St. Simons Island from Montgomery, Alabama in 1993, when they bought Coastal Cleaners. From the time he was 13 years old, he worked there every day after school and during summers through the time he attended college. Michael says he’s excited to take what they
have already built and grow it to a new level. He plans to expand services while continuing to provide unparalleled customer service. He’s well prepared, having learned under the tutelage of his father, Eldridge, and his mother, Bobbie, who he credits for instilling a strong work ethic in him. They were both born and raised in Bainbridge Georgia, where Eldridge grew up in the dry cleaning business. His father, Bill Cannon, owned and operated Cannon’s Cleaners, where Eldridge and his four siblings worked. Eldridge left the dry cleaning business to pursue a career as a corporate pilot and flew for 18 years before being grounded by a lay off. This is when he returned to the dry cleaning world by purchasing Coastal Cleaners and turning it into Cannon’s Coastal Cleaners. A hard worker and dedicated owner-operator, Eldridge devoted himself to turning around the dysfunctional business and grew it to all it is today with the help of Bobbie and his children, Michael, Johnathan, and Melissa. Eldridge is well respected in the industry and was the Vice President of the South Eastern Fabricare Association for three years. He was also a key note speaker at the International Clean Show in 2013 where he spoke about his beginnings, growth, and success, and what it takes to succeed. Michael praises his mother, who had been a registered nurse in Montgomery, and currently serves as its bookkeeper and secretary, as being the “glue” that has kept both the family and business together through the years. When you drop off that blouse and jacket for cleaning, it really does “take a village.” All three locations of Cannon’s Coastal Cleaners offer a drive-thru service for your convenience where the customer is met with a friendly face. The front counter clerks there excel in customer service. They wait on customers, receiving, identifying and assigning clothing to customers’ accounts using heat seals (barcodes), and return the clothing when completed. Cannon’s was the first dry cleaner in the Southeast to implement heat seals and other cutting-edge technology they have in their business. This enables them to be consistent, accurate, and accountable. Production assistants separate and expedite clothing to the correct presses according to the particular garment as well as which store it will be returned to. Cannon’s pressers use the most current and advanced pressing equipment in the industry to provide a professional finishing to all garments. Every garment
is inspected for stains, buttons, pressing quality, special requests or preferences to meet and exceed the customers’ expectations. Using an automated assembly system, the heat seals are scanned and combined with other completed garments to create a finished bundle. Each bundle is then bagged using an automated bagging machine that detects the length in order to not waste any plastic. Finally, the bundle is transported to the correct store where they are alphabetized and scanned to a specific location, ready for you to pick up. The Cannon family knows every part of that process is important in the steps needed to provide professional service that results in happy customers. Michael shared a story about the “old” days: only a few weeks after his parents bought the business, all of the pressers went to lunch and never came back. The Cannon family then worked to press and complete all the
work that had been promised to the customers regardless of the time and sacrifice. Michael assures us that this same type of business ethic continues today. “No matter what happens or who doesn’t show up, Cannon’s Coastal Cleaners keeps their word and will do whatever it takes to honor that.” They have been through times when few workers, unforeseen equipment problems, or other obstacles have forced them to work around the clock or take clothes to another cleaner Eldridge owns in Thomasville to complete the work promised to customers, but it gets done. Michael says, “We keep our word – always have and always will. Especially to our customers, who are the reason why our business is what it is today.” Michael says that the best advice his dad ever gave him was to reinvest in the company. Some dry cleaners are small, not-so-clean places that hand write everything and have (continues)

Donohue Foundation annual golf tournament held to further its mission of funding programs that support families dealing with pediatric cancer and the people who care for them. Now we are sharing exciting news about these two worlds coming together. The A.J. Donohue Foundation has announced, in addition to continuing support of the Foundations’ Nursing Scholars Program and Wolfson Children’s at Southeast Georgia Health System, its current efforts will be dedicated to initiating challenge grants for the renovation and improvements of the pediatric care facilities at Southeast Georgia Health System. This is the most ambitious project the Foundation has attempted in its 13 years of existence!
A
s explained by A.J. Donohue Foundation CFO John Donohue, “We have presented the Southeast Georgia Health System (SGHS) Foundation with a challenge: for every dollar they raise for building a new playroom and renovating the pediatric inpatient area, the A.J. Donohue Foundation will match it, up to $100,000.” Krista Robitz, Director of Development for SGHS Foundation says, 54
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
“We were ecstatic to be approached by John and the A.J. Donohue Foundation about launching this matching campaign as part of this major fundraising effort.” Their goal is to create a pleasant and cheerful environment that is comfortable and aesthetically pleasing to pediatric patients and their families. A key part of this initiative is to build a playroom replicating what Wolfson Children’s Hospital has done in their Jacksonville facilities. Play-
rooms allow children to take their minds off of medical treatment and procedures for a while and just be kids again. Comfortable furniture, TVs, gaming systems, books, toys, games, and puzzles in a colorful, fun environment will be available to pediatric patients and their families in the new in-patient area. Wolfson Children’s Hospital is where John’s nephew A.J. received 200+ days of care. (continues)
Before A.J. died, he was raising money to help improve the comfort of children’s family during their stays. It was in this spirit that Team A.J. became the Foundation that continues his legacy. The Foundation’s matching campaign for the pediatric playroom at SGHS is very clearly an extension of A.J.’s goals. John explains, “It fits right in with our mission. It’s important for us to stay local since everything began right here in Glynn County for A.J. It’s where he started selling his $2 decals, raising over $50K. We can reach a lot of families coming through these doors. And it’s not about capital improvements or new equipment, we simply want to provide a better atmosphere for the children receiving care here – not just cancer patients. The patient environment needs to be warm, and pleasant, with a component of fun to make them feel special and improve the entire hospital experience.” Robitz agreed, adding that Wolfson has been extremely supportive, offering design services and advice. “These designs are created and implemented with family in mind. We need people to understand that providing a playroom offers some fun and normalcy. That goes a long way in patient care and treatment. Environment is very important to the healing process. Not only does it help the patient, it alleviates stress on families.” We’ve all heard “laughter is the best medicine,” and there’s some truth in that! Creating a family-friendly environment and enhancing the patient experience for the child makes hospital visits less scary and helps reduce the 56

anxiety that comes with medical treatment and health concerns. John does say that what they’d ultimately like to see is the ability to get more pediatric cancer care and treatment here, closer to local patients, which is why the Foundation has also made capital contributions and has established a working partnership with facilities here. However, he stresses the fact that it’s essential not to overlook the needs of patients currently receiving care here. Now, during the construction and renovation of the current in-patient floors, is the ideal time to create a pleasant play area and family environment, instead of approaching it following completion as an afterthought.
Now is also the perfect time to donate, because with the matching challenge, you’ll double your gift! This maximizes every dollar you invest in the children and families of our community. You can donate online at wearethefoundation.org or call 912.466.3360. Another way to support Leap for Kids is to register to play in or sponsor the 13th annual A.J. Donohue Golf Tournament on February 29. Or, you can attend the Leap for Kids Gala Reception at the Jekyll Island Westin the preceding evening, where live music, great food, and a silent auction will be featured. Visit them online at ajdonohuefoundation.org for more information.
What’s Under Your Umbrella? Understanding Liability Insurance by C h r i s Te m p l e t o n , M o r r i s & Te m p l e t o n I n s u ra n ce
A
ccidents happen, and as a result, financial responsibilities sometimes follow. So it’s important to prepare for the unexpected. That’s where umbrella insurance comes in. It can help protect your home, savings, and even future earnings. If you are ever in a situation where you are being sued, your standard homeowners or auto insurance will help with some liability coverage, such as attorney’s fees. But umbrella insurance is oftentimes called excess liability insurance because it helps pay anything above and beyond. If you are sued for damages that exceed the liability limits of your homeowners or car insurance, an umbrella policy helps pay what you owe. For example, say you cause a car accident that left three people injured and major damages to their car. The car needs $25,000 in repairs, the treatment of injuries totals to another $300,000, and the driver is out of work for several weeks so they sue you for another $100,000 in lost earnings. Then you would be responsible for a total of $425,000 because of the crash. You already carry $350,000 in liability coverage with your car insurance policy, but that means you are 58
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
still responsible for paying the remaining $125,000. If you have an umbrella policy, then the difference is covered. Your umbrella policy gives you the added protection you need and peace of mind that you would be covered even in extreme or unexpected situations. It will also cover you for things such as libel and slander. If this made you stop and think, “Do I need an umbrella policy for myself and my assets?” Then a few things you want to consider are whether you own property, have a significant savings, own potentially dangerous items such as a pool
or a trampoline, or work in situations that increase your chances of a lawsuit. If any of those considerations apply to you, then this is your time to give Morris & Templeton Insurance a call. Most often the additional coverage is needed for individuals that own a lot of assets, own very expensive assets, or are at significant risk for being sued (such as a landlord). Umbrella policies typically offer at
least one million dollars in liability protection. Umbrella insurance is there to protect you from large liability claims. This coverage typically includes personal injury, property damage (but not your personal property), landlord liability, or injury. However, it will not cover instances such as criminal or intentional acts, business loss, or oral or written contract. Of course, you don’t go through life expecting anything bad to happen to you, but, unfortunately, sometimes it can and does. While
an umbrella policy isn’t required, this added protection is always nice to rely on should any misfortunate events occur. Make sure your assets are covered! Give Morris & Templeton Insurance a call today to help understand how you can benefit from an umbrella policy. Contact the office at 912.355.4549 or visit morristempleton.com.

AND THE WINNER IS Brunswick Actors Theatre presents And the Winner Is by Mitch Albom. A show critics have likened to It’s a Wonderful Life with a fresh, funny twist, telling the comic story of Tyler Johnes, a self-obsessed movie star, who is finally nominated for an Oscar, then dies the night before the awards. Outraged at his bad luck and determined to know if he wins (even though he’s dead), he bargains with a heavenly gatekeeper to return to earth for the big night. Along the way, he drags his agent, his acting rival, his bombshell girlfriend and his ex-wife into the journey, in a wildly twisting tale of Hollywood, the afterlife, and how we are judged. Saturdays, December 7, 14, & 21 at 8:00 p.m. Sundays, Dec 8, 15, & 22 at 3:00 p.m. (doors open 45 minutes prior to curtain). A 1940s Holiday Menu of Native American Foods
F
or the December 1940 meeting of the Cassina Garden Club on St. Simons Island, the organization’s president, Miss A. J. Postell, asked Vara Majette to present a lecture on Native American foods of Coastal Georgia. One of the first women attorneys in Georgia, Majette had moved to the island from Jesup in 1932, following the death of her husband. Fascinated by the island’s people and past, she became known as an expert in local history. For the Garden Club talk, Majette carefully researched her topic, writing to “any and every person whom I thought might have … material on the subject,” including the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Library of Congress. She received an abundance of information, and her talk covered both the plants and animals that
made up the Indian diet. Many of the plants she mentioned were familiar: corn, squash, and pumpkin. Others were unusual, such as smilax roots and berries, hearts of the palmetto plant, and fruit from the Spanish bayonet. She also described how live oak acorns were pounded and used as meal after being washed many times to remove bitterness. Majette reported that the variety of meats available “went down all the line of most creeping or crawling or swimming creatures.” These included alligator, rattlesnake, fish, deer, wild turkey, rabbit, and oysters. Among the crawling edibles was the grugru grub, a large worm that lived in the heart of the palmetto plant and could be roasted. In honor of the season, Majette concluded her lecture with a whimsical version of an “Early
American Christmas Dinner” menu, which showcased midcentury cooking styles using Native American foods. Included were toasted Yucca cakes, grugru grubs with wild crab apples pickled in hickory nut oil, roast wild turkey, crushed black walnuts spread with wild honey, and Yaupon brandy. Research for the Garden Club talk probably inspired Majette’s painting, Drying Meat, Fish and Other Food, shown here. She began painting at the age of 75, mainly in watercolor, and became known for scenes based on her extensive study of local history. A collection of Majette’s historical paintings was donated to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society by her daughter, Virginia. The picture of Majette shown here and the transcript of her lecture were given to the Society by the Cassina Garden Club.
