ARTTRENDS MOVES FORWARD WITH ANNIVERSARY RECEPTION
ArtTrends Gallery celebrates six years of showcasing fine original art on St. Simons Island with an opening reception of their new exhibition “Moving Forward” from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 29. See new works by Ella Cart, Dottie Clark, Trish Rugaber, Joyce Ledingham, Suzanne Clements, Susan Anderson, and Joan Hilliard, as well as two new artists to the gallery: clay sculptor Linda Bobinger and bird artist and expert Lydia Thompson. Social distancing will be observed for this event. “Moving Forward” will be on display April 27 through June 26. DARIEN BLESSING PROCEEDS WITHOUT FESTIVAL
Darien’s Blessing of the Fleet Boat Parade will be held on Sunday, April 18th at the Darien River Bridge and Waterfront at 2:00 p.m. As per annual tradition, the boats and their captains will be blessed for a safe and prosperous 2021 season. Darien’s Blessing of the Fleet is the largest on the East Coast and will be aired live on the Darien Telephone Company local channel and on Facebook. Due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the typical festival held on Friday & Saturday to accompany has been postponed until September 17-18. The September festival will celebrate the Bounty of the Fleet and feature all the live music, fireworks, kids activities, classic car show, arts & crafts, food vendors, and more that you love. The Island Players are bringing Dan Goggin’s divine comedy, Nunsense to the St. Simons Casino Theatre stage. BRUNSWICK MOTHER’S DAY WEEKEND BLESSING TRADITION CONTINUES
The 83rd Annual Brunswick Blessing of the Fleet will take place at Mary Ross Waterfront Park on Saturday, May 8, (the day before Mother’s Day) with fun for the whole family from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All-day events include arts & crafts and food vendors, axe throwing, children’s area, and education area (with UGA Marine Life Touch Tank). Scheduled during the day are The Miss Blessing of the Fleet Pageant, a shrimp-eating contest, the inaugural Southeast Georgia Shrimp Standoff, and the annual tug-of-war contest between the Brunswick City Police and Brunswick City Firefighters. There will be live music by Conni Laine, WharfRatz, and Bonnie Blue. The Blessing of the Fleet Boat Procession takes place at 2:00 p.m with waterfront viewing. RUN LIKE A GIRL
You’re invited to join Girls on the Run of the Golden Isles for a Blythe Island 5K Trail Run on May 1. GOTR is a non-profit after school program for girls in 3rd-8th grade that utilizes a 10-week curriculum to teach communication skills, emotional awareness, and development of conflict resolution skills. The program helps build confidence and self-esteem in a fun environment that utilizes running as a way to exercise and cope with stress. After a hiatus due to COVID19, GOTR after-school programs will be starting again in 2021, and they’re adding summer camp options this year as well! The annual 5K is typically a celebration of the season’s success, but it’s also a fundraiser to provide scholarships. Each season the organization provides financial assistance to over half the girls participating in the program. Come out on May 1 at 8:30 a.m. and run!
