PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Another Day in Paradise
B
eloved islander Rene Reyes used to greet locals and tourists alike with the phrase, “It’s another day in paradise!” He always had a smile on his face and an upbeat outlook on life. It was a great reminder not to take for granted the good life we live here: a healthy mix of home and work, and friends and fun. Unfortunately, the last few months we’ve had to stay in our homes and work there too, if we could work at all, not see friends and not have much fun. As we slowly move to get back to our “normal” lives, I thought I’d share some quotes that I’ve found to be helpful. Hopefully, they’ll remind you that your happiness is in your own hands. “Waste your money and you’re only out of money, but waste your time and you’ve lost a part of your life.”
– Michael LeBoeuf
“Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.”
– James Dean
“Wisdom doesn’t automatically come with old age. Nothing does – except wrinkles. It’s true,
“Trust that little voice in your head that says,
some wines improve with age. But only if the
‘Wouldn’t it be interesting if…’ And then do it.”
grapes were good in the first place.”
– Duane Michals
– Abigail Van Buren
And my personal favorite: “When things go wrong don’t go with them.”
– Elvis Presley
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do
“You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give.” – Winston Churchill
than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.
“I have never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as a cause for withdrawing from a friendship.”

hese kids, our Zoomers, just completed a school year that was different than any we, as Boomers and Gen Xers, have seen before now. One of virtual classrooms, digital
testing, and online social interaction. Spending time with members of the Class of 2020 as they head off to college in an uncertain time had us waxing nostalgic for simpler times. On these pages, you’ll see recent graduates from
Glynn Academy, Frederica Academy, and Brunswick High showing off current fashions from local retailers. Interspersed with these snapshots of modern day life are memories from school days in years gone by.

Old Skool
N
ew shoes were always an essential part of starting a new school year. I have distinct childhood memories of visiting a little shoe store in Massachusetts that had a “carousel” of horses you pedaled around a track while you waited for the salesperson to get the correct size shoe after they had measured your feet. And you couldn’t wait to show off your newfound footwear to your friends! Over the years, Mary Janes and Buster Browns evolved into Candies, Pappagallos, Doc Martens, and Timberlands. Keds and Converse are still out there with Tretorn, Nike, Reebok, Addidas and so many others on the casual and sports scene. Over the years, our tastes in shoes have ranged wildly, spanning everything from Old Skool checkered Vans to Air Jordans and docksiders to duck boots. Even mocs, clogs, and
24

ballet flats have had their moments. There’s nothing like a new school year to see current trends, styles, and hot new sellers. While Millennials and Gen X revived the popularity of the “Chucks” first introduced by Converse in 1932, and have successfully carried the All-Stars into Gen Y, Boomers carry fond memories of another old “gym shoe.” Believe it or not, those two tone lace-up oxfords known as saddle shoes began life as a sport shoe, and my what a history they have had! Sporting goods company, Spalding, introduced the “original saddle oxford” in 1906 as a gym shoe. The innovation of the shoe was that the overlaying saddle made the flexor area, where the most stress occurs, stronger. By the 1920s, saddles were typically worn to play sports like tennis, hockey, and badminton. They were a cheaper alternative to the
two-tone brogue spectators preferred for golf. The canvas shoes of the time, known as sneakers, weren’t considered durable enough for exercise. Acceptable as dress shoes, saddles became part of school uniforms, with their colors often matched to school colors. As saddle shoes became popularly adopted by youth, the new style soon met with broad condemnation by doctors, shoe clerks, grandmothers, and even clergy. Doom was predicted for girls’ feet (ironic, considering the popularity of high heels for women) because flat, broad-
toed shoes, they said, were bad for the arches. Spalding incorporated high quality rubber soling to improve traction and make the shoes more lightweight. When kids started to wear
saddles as street shoes, they discovered another problem: the dirt that accumulated on the soles with everyday wear tracked in and marked up gym floors. Eventually gym shoes with lighter rubber soles were introduced, leaving saddle shoes for mostly dress wear. Interestingly, during the Jazz Age, fans showed support for racial harmony and greater acceptance of black musicians by wearing the twotone footwear. During the Depression, saddles crossed over to everyday wear, and girls wore them throughout the physical culture craze of the late 30s. Throughout the war years, saddles were a common sight on swing dancing floors, but brown replaced the black leather dye which rationing made scarce. By the 50s, teens continued to wear saddle shoes, following in the fashion footsteps of celebrities like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Marilyn Monroe. From the 70s onwards, the fashion for saddle shoes dwindled, sales dropped off, and manufacturers discontinued production of the two tone classics. Over the years, when warehouse caches of saddles shoes have been discovered, they’ve been snapped up by entrepreneurs and are sold now as retro collectables. With the resurgence of the popularity of Grease, 50s sock hop themed parties, and retro fashion trends, don’t be too surprised if you see them around today.

Satchels to Backpacks W
hen it comes to carrying books to school, the truth is that Boomers and Gen X had it easier than Millennials and Zoomers. Often textbooks were supplied in school and didn’t need to go home at all. And for many years, students also were able to stow their belongings in lockers during the school day and overnight to keep from having to carry unnecessary books between classes and home. More and more schools have gotten rid of lockers entirely. Now we make wheeled backpacks and issue warnings about weightload of backpacks for kids. It’s a far cry from the times when our grandparents or their parents carried books to school using a simple strap – even if they had to walk ten miles through the snow uphill both ways. In the 1950s, single strap book bags, worn cross-body, were the standard school bags. Leather backpacks weren’t uncommon. The 1960s saw the emergence
were the predominant style in the 1980s and 90s. The introduction of novelty characters and smaller sizes made them popular even for the youngest students.
of soft leather briefcase style bags and leather bags with short handles, a style now seen in many modern purses. These satchels were all the rage in the 1960s-70s, and were sometimes made in a style to be worn on the back. Around 1969, the name of the game changed with the introduction of the JanSport Ski & Hike bag, which first became popular with University of Washington students and made its way to other college campuses. In 1982, L.L. Bean introduced the Book Pack, and it quickly became the company’s top selling item. From that time on, JanSport and L.L. Bean continued modifying and improving their backpack styles for student use. Nylon backpacks
While in the past couple decades, backpacks have continued to get bigger and more techsavvy to accommodate laptops, tablets, chargers, and cords, there’s been criticism too. Pediatricians and chiropractors recommend that students carry less than 15% of their body weight in a backpack; however, at nearly all grade levels from 1-12, the combined average weight of textbooks for History, Math, Science, and Reading/Language Arts exceeds this percentage. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, during the 2011-12 school year more than 13,700 students, aged 5 to 18, were treated for backpack-related injuries. An interesting development? There has been an increase in the use of tablets to replace textbooks. The 54% decrease in backpack-related injuries in 2016 is credited at least in part to that trend. It will be interesting to see what emerges following the virtual learning experience of 2020.

Cafeteria Cool While lunches have been available in school cafeterias for all generations, there are those who choose to bring their own lunches from home, at least on occasion.
T
oday, there are all sorts of insulated totes and mini soft coolers for kids and adults in colorful designs or decorated with favorite characters. Japanese-inspired bento boxes with their neat little compartments for a stylish lunch à la Molly Ringwald in Breakfast Club are also popular. But can anything ever top kids’ lunch boxes of the 1950s-1990s?
30
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
Industrial-style metal lunch boxes with matching vacuum bottles had been in use, mostly by factory workers, from about 1920 on, and whimsical children’s versions popped up in the mid-20s. In the 30s, popular brands started to jump in the market, and, in 1934, Mickey Mouse became the first character to appear on a lunch box. The problem with lunch boxes, however, was that they were very durable and long-lasting, so once a child had one, there was no need for another for quite some time. In 1950, lunch box manufacturer Aladdin came up with a brilliant idea to increase the demand for new lunch boxes by featuring popular television and radio characters. When they introduced a red lacquered box with a picture of Hopalong Cassidy, they sold 600,000 units the first year. Characters like Howdy Doody, the Lone Ranger and Barbie followed, and the trend for popular television and cartoon characters continued. Now, even if there was nothing wrong with their old lunch box, kids wanted a new lunch box every year to keep up with the newest characters! TV, cartoon characters, and superheroes weren’t the only lunch box stars; The Beatles became the first band immortalized on a lunch box in 1965, and four years later, Neil Armstrong’s lunar landing was celebrated with custom astronaut lunch boxes. While the simple rectangular boxes were initially made of tin and often had a matching thermos for beverages or soup, they transitioned to plastic in the mid-1980s.
Bologna again?
Georgia happens to be the site of the largest lunch box museum in the world. Rivermarket Antique Mall in Columbus is where you can find Allen Woodall, Jr.’s collection of more than 3,500 classic lunch boxes and original lunch box art. The amassed assortment of vintage and rare lunch boxes has been featured on Roadside America, The Food Network, and is recognized by the Smithsonian. If you’re feeling that back to school nostalgia, it might be worth a road trip!

Making Mistakes
nevitably learning includes making mistakes. People tried to correct mistakes they made while writing even before the eraser was invented. Using wax tablets allowed marks to be removed. To remove ink from parchment or papyrus, bits of rough stone like sandstone or pumice were often used. Another option, which sounds thoroughly disgusting, was using soft bread. That changed in 1770, when natural philosopher and theologian Joseph Priestly (the man who discovered oxygen) described “a substance excellently adapted to the purpose of wiping from paper the mark of black lead pencil.” The substance, initially called India gum, became known as rubber. Although Priestly discovered rubber’s erasing properties, it’s British engineer Edward Nairne who is generally credited with developing and marketing the first rubber eraser in Europe. Nairne inadvertently picked up a piece of rubber instead of breadcrumbs and accidentally discovered rubber’s erasing properties. It’s Priestly who gets credit for naming rubber, from the act of rubbing that one needed to perform to erase. The name ended up generally applying to the construction material of the erasers than to the erasers themselves. Unfortunately, these erasers crumbled easily, were sensitive to weather, and smelled bad. After 1839, when Charles Good-
year invented and patented vulcanization, a method of curing rubber to make it more durable, erasers made of this sturdier rubber then become a household item. The first patent for attaching an eraser to a pencil was issued in 1858 to Hyman Lipman of Philadelphia. It was later held to be invalid because it was merely the combination of two things, without a new use. Interestingly, pencils with handy built-in erasers on the tops are a largely American phenomenon. Pumice, made from volcanic ash, is added to pink pencil-toppers and Pink Pearls to add abrasiveness. Now many erasers are made with vinyl and shaped into novelty items.
secretaries and, later, to wholesalers, were kept secret. As her business grew and her son, Michael, got older, she paid the teen and his friends $1 an hour to work out of her garage, filling nail polish bottles with liquid and affixing labels on them by hand. Four years after coming up with the idea, Graham’s private company ownership slipped out to her employer and she was fired. This gave her the time to devote herself fully to the business and she applied for a patent, also securing clients like General Electric and IBM. Within 10 years, she opened an automated plant and, by 1975, the company made 25 million bottles of what became known as Liquid Paper per year. In 1979, she sold the company to the Gillette Corporation for $47.5 million, and sadly, died unexpectedly of a stroke six months later. Bette’s son, Michael, made a name for himself in the world as well, he was the hat-wearing member of The Monkees, the musical group spawned by a television show.
Correcting mistakes made with ink still remained a frustrating problem, especially for secretaries who made typos on typewriters that they could not fix. It was Bette Nesmith Graham who came to the rescue here. Graham, a divorced single mom working as a secretary and also making money with art and modeling, created a solution for those dreaded typed mistakes by tapping into her artistic background. She used fast-drying white tempera paint and a watercolor brush to obscure the typos.
Millennials and Zoomers have little concern with mistakes. Smartphones and word processing programs have autocorrect. Mistakes are corrected even before they’re sent. There’s the added layer of spell check and grammar check for writers. And, not only do pencils have erasers, there are pens with erasable ink. Such progress!
Nesmith Graham called her concoction “Mistake Out,” and continued to work on perfecting the formula. In order to keep her job, the sales of the correction fluid she made to other

o discussion of back to school essentials would be complete without touching on the evolution of writing from Baby Boomers through Generation Z. We won’t get into how writing began as ink scratched onto parchment with quills or learning letters on slates that each student hung around their neck. No. We all started out with Ticonderoga #2 pencils and Pink Pearl erasers, composition books, Crayola crayons, and a pencil case (maybe even one of those cool roll-top ones). Classrooms had pencil sharpeners affixed to the wall or the teacher’s desk and you had to get permission from the teacher to use it. It doubled as a fashion runway where you could show off those sweet new shoes or maybe a sassy new haircut in front of the class.
Pens were usually your standard BIC crystal ballpoints with blue or black ink. Red was reserved for your teachers. But if you showed up with one of those fancy 4-color pens (first introduced in France by BIC in 1970) that you could click between blue, black, red, and green, you took things to a whole new level of cool. You might also get that pen taken away for over-clicking! Felt tip pens and roller balls with smooth ink, and later, gel inks, were also available. Pens now have ink in a rainbow of colors and trendy metallic shades, but these are widely frowned upon by teachers for class work. Don’t forget your Sharpies and highlighters too! Notebook paper in standard wide and college rule hasn’t evolved much. Long gone are the practice books for cursive and spelling books.
Most schools no longer teach penmanship; after all, it’s not on a standardized test. Big, bulky three ring binders and loads of folders were replaced by Trapper Keeper organizers. Boring file folders used to take a creative hand to decorate, but now they’re printed with pictures of favorite movie, television, and cartoon characters, and there are notebooks to match. Black and white marbled composition books have not gone out of vogue and are still included on most middle and high school school supply lists. Boomers and Gen X teens knew the pain of timed typing tests

(The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.) and making sure there was enough correcting ribbon on the IBM Selectric to get through the dreaded ten-page essay. If not, we thanked God for Bette Nesmith Graham! By the time Gen X kids made it to college, essays and term papers were completed on a home PC or in the computer lab in the library and stored on a floppy disk and stowed in your backpack to go from place to place. If there wasn’t a printer free, you might have headed over to Kinko’s or another openall-night copy center to print out your master work and have the requisite copies made. Milennials and Zoomers, on the other hand, were practically born with a keyboard in hand. They learned typing skills without ever touching a typewriter, through video games and learning programs. Home computers and laptops have rendered computer labs obsolete and now everyone has their own printer, although we may use them more for photos than writing assignments. Email, DropBox, and
cloud storage makes it easy to submit a paper that never actually makes it to paper in the literal sense. Tablets and iPads continue this incredible technological evolution. Lightweight, easily portable, and user-friendly, tablets can store books and educational programs, while also acting as a writing/drawing device. You can write directly on the screen with a stylus to fill in worksheets, take notes, or draw. Programs turn handwriting into typed copy. When you factor in the camera and video capability, with programs like FaceTime, Skype, and Zoom, it’s clear how the tablet and laptops can be a full-featured classroom portal. In 2020, for many, that’s exactly what they have been.

ur gratitude to Slade Turner, Kathryn Sadowski and Pam Griner from Brunswick High School, John Pope from Frederica Academy, and Cindy Stephenson for assistance in rounding up models. We appreciate Tasteful Temptations for providing the food and drinks for the day. Jordan Sasser of Glynn County Recreation and Parks Dept. graciously secured us the room to use at the Casino and the much appreciated assistance of Canen Moore who went over and above as our go-to guy. Kendall Copelan pitched in a hand after a full day of work. Molly Duckworth who was our coronavirus procedure queen, making sure everyone had waivers signed, temperatures taken and logged, and keeping non-participants away. Laura Morse of Laura Angela Photography was a pro working through heat, humidity, impending storm, and sprinkling rain with a smile, even while pregnant! And last, but not least, a thank you to our vendors for trusting us with their wares, and to our models for sharing their time with us. We wish these incoming college freshmen all the best as they begin this new chapter of their life.

n the tumultuous world of 2020, every aspect of our daily lives, including travel, has undergone intense scrutiny. One result is a redefinition of the experience of commercial airline travel that considers not only the convenience and speed of flying, but the safety as well. As the closest airport to Travel + Leisure’s top choice in the 2020 World’s Best Islands in the Continental US, Brunswick Golden Isles Airport stands ready to answer the question of how to maintain our community’s world-class status while ensuring protection for passen-

gers and staff. Suddenly, the smaller size of the airport has become an attribute. The airport in Brunswick basks in the “Goldilocks zone;” large enough to offer comfort, space and style without the exposure of overlapping departures and crowds. “In the past, some travelers automatically made the decision to go to larger urban airports without checking out their hometown option,” noted Robert Burr, Executive Director of the Glynn County Airport Commission. “That’s changed now. People want to avoid the crowds and long lines of larger (continues on page 52)

he readers of Travel + Leisure have ranked the Golden Isles of Georgia number one in the Top Islands in the Continental U.S. category of the publication’s 2020 World’s Best Awards. Each year, Travel + Leisure, the largest travel media brand
in the U.S., with an audience of 6.7 million, invites its readers to share their thoughts on destinations, hotels, resorts, spas, airlines, and more in this annual survey. The ratings were based on the following characteristics: natural attractions/beaches, activities/sights, restaurants/food, people/friendliness, and value. Each year for the past five years, the Golden Isles has been listed as a top contender for the World’s Best Islands. This is the first year the area has been chosen as the number one island destination.
No one could be more pleased than the Golden Isles Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), the official destination marketing organization dedicated to promoting tourism in Golden Isles of Georgia. “The Golden Isles CVB is incredibly pleased and excited to share this announcement with our entire community, our visitors, and those who work diligently to contribute to the area’s success,” said Scott McQuade, presi-
dent and CEO of the Golden Isles CVB. “This award is so meaningful in the travel industry, and to achieve this number one ranking is an accomplishment we can all be very proud of.” This award comes at a much-needed time following the disruption and temporary restriction on travel earlier this year due to COVID-19. The CVB is confident this new accolade will introduce new visitors to the area
and will reinvigorate past visitors who may not have traveled to the area recently. “We take great pride in sharing the beauty, genuine hospitality and lure of the Golden Isles with those looking for a unique and authentic vacation destination,” said McQuade. “We hope the announcement of this major international award brings a boost of interest to the area, and we are always excited to welcome new visitors to this special place.”

airports. It’s very reassuring to come into our terminal where there is plenty of space to socially distance in comfort. Passengers realize it presents a lower risk to fly from a smaller airport.” “It’s a time consideration for our neighbors here in the Golden Isles, as well,” he added. “Flying from Brunswick eliminates that hourplus on the interstate just to get to the airport. Then parking is another matter. We still offer free parking for our customers, and that’s a valuable advantage.” The terminal is virtually touch-free for travelers. The airport has automatic entry doors and sensor-operated faucets in restrooms, as well as the ability to accept electronic boarding documents. A cleaning crew stands by at all times, ready to unobtrusively sanitize every surface throughout the day. Since the longest time spent in an airport is at the beginning of the journey, this level of over-the-top cleanliness is an asset. Even though it might be hidden behind a mask, the ever-present smile on the face of Senior Airport Courtesy Representative Charles Norman is still there. Winner of the Community Spirit Award from the Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau, “Mr. Charles” makes sure everyone arriving at the airport knows they are welcome, valuable guests. ity on all flights. All Delta aircraft utilize a filtration system that delivers cabin air quality at the same level as hospital operating rooms.
Families flying with young children appreciate the family-friendly design of the airport. Burr, a recent grandparent himself, enjoys seeing the excitement of young passengers and fully appreciates the relief on parents’ faces when they realize there is sufficient space to let them stretch their legs before they board the aircraft.
A state-of-the-art electrostatic fogging procedure used between flights wipes out viruses and bacteria. Before passengers are allowed to board the aircraft, a detailed inspection is done to ensure the cabin meets the airline’s high standards. If you thought your mom was strict about how you cleaned your room when you were a kid, imagine several highly critical professionals certifying every square inch of it multiple times a day. The cabin’s interior undergoes a detailed inspection before passengers are allowed to board. If anything is less than 100%, nobody gets on the plane until it is resolved. Period.
“It’s a fact that little kids are going to want to explore and move around,” he noted. “We’ve made allowances for that. Our terrace area lets kids watch the activity on the runway, have a snack without worrying about making a mess and wear themselves out a bit.” Health precautions aboard commercial flights have become headline topics in recent months. Although it is difficult to extract benefit from the pandemic’s effects on our world, the aviation industry has taken up the challenge to meet them head on. Delta Air Lines, which provides daily jet service for Brunswick Golden Isles Airport, has remained steadfast in their commitment to limiting cabin capac-
“As things evolve here in the Golden Isles as well as the rest of the world, we are eager to welcome visitors back and help our neighbors put their delayed travel plans into action,” Burr said. “It’s more than an economic issue for us. People get into the aviation business to help others expand their horizons, and here in particular, to extend the hospitality that is part of our local culture. It’s an essential part of our identity. It’s who we are.” flygcairports.com

KNOCK ON WOOD! Hopefully there is no “before” and we remain out of the paths of any named storms, but hurricane season has begun. Part of living in paradise in the Golden Isles means that summer and fall bring the risk of weather emergencies and evacuation. Remember to stay vigilant, and be prepared. On the accompanying pages, you’ll find some important local information and tips from Glynn County Emergency Management Agency, as well as some fun graphics with general hurricane facts and a helpful checklist we borrowed from the City of Palm Beach Gardens Hurricane Guide, with their permission.

WE MIGHT BE A LITTLE LATER THAN USUAL in turning our focus to hurricane preparedness, but past storms have arrived after August, and we’re not out of the clear until November 30. That means now is still a good time to make sure we’re ready for whatever might come our way. Glynn County Emergency Management recommends some steps for everyone to take, if you have not already.
✔ Make sure you know your evacuation zone. (This information is in the telephone directory or can be located at glynncounty.org/1305/Maps.)
✔ Make sure your house is in good repair, especially the roof and windows.
✔ Know the elevation of your property.
✔ Trim back any dead wood from trees.
✔ Learn the storm surge history and possibilities in your area. (You can
✔ Purchase a can of lime to sterilize garbage and refuse.
see surge maps at glynncounty.org/1305/Maps.)
✔ You also want to review your insurance policies to see if they include flood damage (homeowners does not).
✔ Purchase flood insurance from your agent, if necessary. ✔ Take an inventory of your personal property for insurance and/or tax deduction reasons and keep it in a safe place. If possible take pictures or video your belongings.
✔ Have materials prepared to board your windows and doors. If possible, have it cut to size and identified as to where it will be used beforehand.
✔ Decide on an evacuation destination (host home or storm-safe location) ahead of time and make sure everyone knows that destination.
✔ Have a point of contact (telephone number) away from the danger area where relatives can call to check on you, i.e., relative or friend.
✔ Make sure important papers, pictures and keepsakes are kept in a weatherproof box ready to move on short notice.
✔ Make sure you have a good portable radio (preferably a NOAA weather radio), several flashlights, spare batteries, and bulbs. Many weather radios are crank or solar powered and may also have flashlights or emergency lights and charging outlets for devices.
✔ For emergency weather information, tune your radio to 104.9 FM Glynn County’s Emergency Advisory Radio System or to Peach State Radio, Brunswick station 89.1 FM. Glynn County EMA issues info bulletins to all radio stations, cable services and Ch. 21 for our area.

WIND SPEEDS According to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, Atlantic and Eastern Pacific hurricanes are classified into five categories. The scale estimates potential property damage to the hurricane’s sustained wind speed.
74-95mph (119-153 km/h)
96-110mph (154-177 km/h)
111-129mph (178-208 km/h)
130-156mph (209-251 km/h)
157mph or higher (252 km/h or higher)
THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE
48
Category 1 74-95 mph
Very dangerous winds will produce some damage: Well-constructed frame homes could have damage to roof, vinyl siding and gutters. Large branches of trees will snap and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled. Extensive damage to power lines and poles likely will result in power outages that could last a few to several days.
Category 2 96-110 mph
Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage: Well-constructed frame homes could sustain major roof and siding damage. Many shallowly rooted trees will be snapped or uprooted and block numerous roads. Near-total power loss is expected with outages that could last from several days to weeks.
Category 3 111-129 mph
Devastating damage will occur: Well-built framed homes may incur major damages or removal of roof decking and gable ends. Many trees will be snapped or uprooted, blocking numerous roads. Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes.
Category 4 130-156 mph
(Major) Catastrophic damage will occur: Well-built framed homes can sustain severe damage with loss of most of the roof structure and/or some exterior walls. Most trees will be snapped, and power poles downed. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable for months.
Category 5 157 mph or higher
(Major) Catastrophic damage will occur: A high percentage of framed homes will be destroyed, with total roof failure and wall collapse. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Power outages will last for weeks to possibly months. Most of the area will be uninhabitable – for weeks or months.

HURRICANE WATCH VS. HURRICANE WARNING HURRICANE WATCH means conditions (sustained winds
of at least 74 mph) are possible in the area within 48 hours. HURRICANE WARNING means hurricane-force conditions
(sustained winds of at least 74 mph) are expected in the area in 36 hours or less.
HEAVY RAINS Rainfall amounts relate mostly to the speed, size and the geography of the area. Tropical cyclones can produce widespread, torrential rains in excess of 6 inches, that may result in deadly and destructive floods. This type of flooding can persist for several days after a storm has dissipated. It is important for residents to be safe when approaching water on a roadway. The phrase Turn Around Don’t Drown reminds drivers to assume flooded roadways are hazardous and uncrossable. It is better to be safe and turn around then to attempt crossing the flooded roadway and risk your own life and/or vehicle from drowning in the flood water.
STORM SURGE Storm surge is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tides. The rise in water level can cause extreme

EVACUATE? IF YOU MUST EVACUATE Make the decision to leave early. Do not wait too late when hotels and fuel along routes may be scarce. Move at a steady pace and ensure you leave enough time to get to where you will weather the storm. DO NOT take chances with your life by staying at home or waiting until it’s too late!
STAY?
• Notify your host home and family members that you are evacuating. • Coordinate an out-of-state point of contact with which all family members can check in.
IF YOU CAN STAY, SHELTER-IN-PLACE
• Bring along your pre-assembled evacuation kit (water, snacks, cash, medications and important items/documents such as your driver license, photo ID, proof of address, insurance policies, family photos, and a list of important contacts).
Self-evacuating is stressful and can cause more harm than good. It is also expensive. If you live in a structurally sound home and are not located in a mandatory evacuation zone, Shelter-In-Place in your pre-identified, stocked safe room and take the following precautions:
• Fill up your vehicle and bring extra gas, if possible (gas stations run out of fuel along evacuation routes). • Secure patio/yard furniture.
• Finish putting up shutters.
• Secure all doors and windows.
• Offer your home as shelter to friends or relatives who live in vulnerable areas or mobile homes.
• Have a plan for your pets if you are not taking them with you.
• Leave radio or TV on an emergency information station.
• Allow at least twice the usual travel time. Avoid flooded roads and beware of washed out bridges and canals.
• Do laundry.
• Go to your predetermined host home or other designated storm-safe location.
• Move vehicles into a garage or next to a building; avoid trees and utility poles. Freeze water jugs and fill ice chest. Turn refrigerator to coldest setting and lower A/C (turn circuit breakers off after power goes out).
• Notify your prearranged family contact when you arrive at your storm-safe location.
• Fully charge cell and rechargeable batteries. • Place flashlights and batteries throughout the house and keep one with you. After the storm, use candles safely.
Before you leave, take time to do the following:
• Secure all doors and windows. Double-check safe room and Disaster Supply Kit.
• Install hurricane shutters or pre-cut plywood on all windows. • Store awnings, folding furniture, trash cans and other loose outdoor objects.
Glynn County will make the official determination on evacuations during a hurricane threat, and will inform residents.
• Anchor the mobile/manufactured home with over-the-top or frame ties. • Inspect tie-downs and anchors annually.
Pet Safety
IF YOU MUST EVACUATE TO A SHELTER:
Have a plan for your pet to stay with friends or relatives who are not evacuating
RULE # 1: If it isn’t safe for you,
Consider a kennel or veterinarian’s office
it isn’t safe for your pet.
Check with your local animal shelters
If you evacuate, take your pet!
Storm shelters cannot accept pets due to health and safety regulations. *Registered service animals for people with disabilities are an exception.

My friends and I grew up barefoot on the beaches, riding motorbikes, fishing and more fishing. We all attended St. Simons Elementary School where I walked to school every day. My great-grandparents were of the original Waycross Colony that formed a neighborhood near the Village with their house right on the shore. Our very close knit community was safe and of a different era.
W
hile St. Simons Island will always be home to me and my wife, Mary-Bryan, as we love the small town atmosphere, the ocean, the people, the history and our businesses, we also love our other oasis, located in the open plains of Kansas. I’m an avid bird hunter and discovered this hunting paradise over a decade ago. We love our time there and the opportunity to share it with our family and
After receiving my Masters in Taxation from the University of Georgia, I began working with what was then known as one of the “Big Eight” accounting firms, Price Waterhouse. After a few years in public accounting, I knew that my calling was elsewhere and began working for a residential development company in Atlanta during the height of its fiscal boom. Having learned the business over the next few years, I knew that I was ready to leave the city, return to St. Simons and start my own real estate development company. My previous partner and I started a real estate company in 1992 that focused on residential real estate and residential development. Since that time, DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty has weathered all the economic storms over the years and we are stronger than ever. I’m proud that residential developments I developed are still current and growing. Our real estate office is a family of sorts. Maybe that sounds a bit corny, but it’s true. We have three great staff employees and about 30 agents. I’m very conscientious about the symmetry and flow between all agents and employees in our office. This is a major source of pride I have about my business. Some agents have been with me since the beginning and some are newer. The bottom line is that we all appreciate and respect one another.
friends. Our grown children, Sarah Parker Peyer and Will Peyer, and our two dogs love our time in Kansas. It is a mental retreat for us all. My grandfather taught me so much about the outdoors, farm life and being a “fix-it-man.” I learned how to diagnose problems and figure a way to fix them on my own. This is part of the allure of a Kansas farm – something is always broken!
In 2010, I affiliated with Sotheby’s International Realty believing that the luxury real estate markets on St. Simons and Sea Island were not fully satisfied and were lacking exposure to other markets. The national and international marketing sources that Sotheby’s offers are unparalleled. The Sotheby’s marketing tools are limitless – from website support to print advertisements and everything in between. We advertise in major publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times for high national visibility. Our 1,000+ offices worldwide refer home buyers and sellers to one another so the outreach is all encompassing. (continues)

“I’M VERY CONSCIENTIOUS ABOUT THE SYMMETRY AND FLOW BETWEEN ALL AGENTS AND EMPLOYEES IN OUR OFFICE. THIS IS A MAJOR SOURCE OF PRIDE I HAVE ABOUT MY BUSINESS. SOME AGENTS HAVE BEEN WITH ME SINCE FROM THE BEGINNING AND SOME ARE NEWER. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WE ALL APPRECIATE AND RESPECT ONE ANOTHER.”
Our sales agents are second to none. Each one is a great person in their own right, knowledgeable about our real estate market, and will always put their clients first. When I invite a new agent to join us, it has everything to do with the quality of their character and ability to blend in with our work family seamlessly, and very little to do with their anticipated production. For those reasons, we work more as a team encouraging one another, rather than as a group of individual real estate agents. At the end of the day, we all want to be proud of where we work and try to the best of our ability to conduct ourselves in such a way that our clients actively recommend us to their friends

In addition, Dr. Britt and Dr. Souther are committed to continuing education and furthering their knowledge in order to better serve their patients by training with The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Dr. Britt has been practicing in the Golden Isles for more than 24 years and considers this unique and beautiful area her home. A native Georgian and South Georgia girl at heart, her hometown is Baxley. She graduated from Appling County High School, Mercer University and the Medical College of Ga School of Dentistry. Her father owned the local Sears store before retiring and her mother is a recently retired Family Nurse Practioner. “I contribute my passion for interacting with people and patients from my mom, who doesn’t know a stranger,” she smiles. Dr. Britt has 14 year-old Malti-Chi named Wiley who she calls her fourlegged child and unique sidekick. “We have such a special bond that I cannot imagine life without her.” If you catch her at home, there’s a good chance Dr. Britt will be out working in her yard because she loves getting her hands in the dirt. If she’s inside, she might be indulging her interest in forensic dentistry by watching the ID channel or programs about forensics and cold cases. Dr. Britt’s professional niche is cosmetic and full mouth reconstruction with an emphasis on correcting a bad bite. She started her training in physiologic dentistry about 13 years ago at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies and has remained current with training in physiologic dentistry, but also cosmetic procedures and physiologic orthodontics. She became an Accredited Member of the
American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the leading organization in cosmetic dentistry, in 2011. Of her accreditation status, Dr. Britt states, “My mentor was Dr. Lloyd Darby III from Vidalia. He recently passed away but I have fond memories of him and of the time

Dr. Britt stresses the importance of taking care of your dental health because it affects your overall health. Dr. Souther explains that its important to pay attention to your body. She says, “Signs of distress are best treated early and proactively. The relationship with patients is of paramount importance to Dr. Britt. She exclaims, “I love my patients! I enjoy getting to know them and about their families on a personal level. I’m a hugger (until recently) and I have so many patients that appreciate that fact. I think treating people like you want to be treated is very important and my patients are like an extended family to me.” A good relationship fostered between members of the dental team is critical too. You’ll find numerous testimonials on the practice’s website praising the doctors and the treatment they received. One of Dr. Souther’s patients stated: “I recently had the best experience at Dentistry by Angela Britt … It started off with them knowing exactly who I was when coming into the office for my first visit. From there I experienced virtually no wait time (hooray). Dr. Souther gave me lots of attention asking about my needs and concerns and it was nice to know she has surgical experience with implants and could also take photos of my implant for a baseline coming into the office so we could confirm it stayed healthy as the implant ages. The office was very clean and my dental hygienist was thorough and knowledgeable. I can’t recommend Dr. Souther and staff enough, they are excellent!” Come experience exceptional dental care at Dentistry by Angela Britt. hat’s an Italian invitation to dine together, a wonderful way of bringing together family and friends. Some of my earliest memories of family and community were found squeezed in and around our dining table. I grew up in East Tennessee, spending countless summer days on my grandparents’ farm that has been in the family for over four generations. Mornings were started with waking up to biscuits made from scratch coupled with one of the finest country spreads. Days were spent topping tobacco, tending a large garden, putting up hay and managing vast livestock. It was a way of life for them. I was fortunate to grow up watching as family worked hard and a community banded together when someone was in need of a hand. At the end of a hard day or holidays, everyone came together to the table to share stories, laugh, and eat amazing food prepared by family from recipes handed down from generation to generation. All around the world, families and loved ones alike can tell nostalgic and sentimental stories of how food, family and love brought them together at the dinner table. Most of us can recall our elders
in the kitchen crafting a meal with tender care and sharing recipes that built the foundation of who they are and where their family’s roots were established. It makes us unique, but the same. Ameet shares similar stories of his family from India and how food and those who prepared it bought them all together. It is also the story that started this little Italian ristorante for Sal Cenicola over 12 years ago. The long line of rich heritage and the roots our ancestors established all bring us home to share a meal at the table. The food may nour-

ou’ve seen the t-shirts that say, “I’m on Island Time.” That’s more than just a slogan. St. Simons Island does indeed have its own pace. Life slows down. People have more time to stop and chat. Happy Hour isn’t limited to an hour by any means. We move 66

from moment to moment between glorious sunrises and breathtaking sunsets. As someone new to the island, this way of life may take some adjustment. Fortunately, there’s a wonderful resource for new residents. For more than 15 years, the Island Newcomers Club has been helping freshly minted islanders connect
with new friends and neighbors and with the larger Golden Isles community. The club’s numerous programs and activities are designed to introduce Newcomers to other Newcomers, to local businesses and services available in the area, and to the wide

The club sponsors a monthly Meet & Greet social event, held at different locations each month, and numerous other monthly activities. In addition to informational and recreational activities, the club has a long history of performing community outreach through volunteerism and charitable activities, including Adopt-a-Highway roadside clean-ups. For fun and games, join a club within the club for Bowling, Bridge, Golf, or Mahjong. For more educational experiences, there are book clubs and the Great Decisions social/international policy discussion group. If it’s food you love, there are Dine-In and Dine-Out groups, and Island Buddies are happy to introduce you to many of the Golden Isles’ activities like concerts at the lighthouse, festivals, and more. Newly instituted groups include Cycling and Gardening for those who love to get outside to enjoy nature and our beautiful surroundings. The Island Adventures programs hosted by the club are always something to look forward to! These excursions expose new residents to places and experiences in the Golden Isles that you might not otherwise have. It’s like having your own tour guide! Past adventures have included day trips to the Okefenokee Swamp to spot alligators to visiting to nearby barrier islands like Little St. Simons Island, Sapelo, or Cumberland, where the wild horses roam. There are opportunities to learn about some of the Golden Isles’ largest employers by touring the the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the Port of Brunswick. Or you can just enjoy the sunset on a dolphin cruise or see what the nets bring in on a trip about a working shrimp
boat. The I sland A dventures Team i s always looking for new and exciting experiences in the Golden Isles. “The b est f riends I h ave m ade h ere o n t he island, I have met through Newcomers,” says Club President, Gary Nikoukary. “I know without Newcomers, my circle of friends and activities enjoyed would be much less.” He continues, “I primarily joined Newcomers to ‘get out of the house’ and enjoy all the island has to offer with wonderful new friends.” It’s not uncommon to see former Island Newcomers Club members still spending time together years after their membership in the club has expired. It’s a wonderful way to forge friendships. The Island Newcomers Club is open to all new residents of St. Simons Island and Sea Island within two years after becoming full or parttime residents. Men and women of all ages, couples and singles, are welcome. Membership is available for three full years for new residents. The club year extends from January 1 through December 31. Most activities run all year with Meet & Greets generally taking the summer off. Enrollment is always open to new members at a current rate of $40/year per member. New members who join now will be credited with membership through December 2021. Visitors are welcome and may attend one meeting prior to joining. Visitors should contact Membership for event registration. Guest(s) of members are welcome to any club function provided there is space available following member sign-up. Members may not bring the same guest(s) to more than two events in a club year. If they’re having that much fun with the Newcomers, encourage them to join! BONNEAU ANSLEY, III Continuing a Family Legacy on Sea Island
by Julie Harris, Chief People Officer, Ansley Real Estate

The Ansley family’s deep roots in Atlanta date back to the development of Ansley Park and Ansley Golf Club in the early 1900s. The legacy continues today with Ansley Real Estate, representing proper-

have a home in Ocean Forest, while Bonneau Ansley III and his wife, Jen, are building their dream home on 50th Street, complete with a dock out to Village Creek. Renowned architect Keith Summerour was tapped for the design and build. Bonneau has always loved the North End of the island with its proximity to the Ocean Forest Club. When looking for a lot, he considered having access to the river a necessity and Jen wanted to see the sunset over the marsh.
new destination had emerged on the Georgia Coast called Sea Island. After exploring the island and renting homes in the summer, he discovered a “For Sale” sign on an empty beachfront lot in 1935 and purchased it for $4,500.00. The renowned architects Ivey and Crook drew up the plans and Bryanscot-bythe-Sea was built as Cottage 71 on 14th Street. Since that time, each generation has owned their own home on Sea Island. Currently Bonneau Ansley, Jr. and his wife, Sharon,
Bonneau III chose to begin his career on the Georgia coast that he so loves. After college, he and his new bride moved to Savannah where he sold property at the Ford Plantation. He later developed over 100 homes at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina. After a significant house fire, Bonneau and Jen moved back to Atlanta, just as the recession began. He sold homes there for seven years before starting his own brokerage. As Georgia’s number one Realtor (with his small team, as just announced in the Wall Street Journal – REAL Trends 2019 rankings), Bonneau is always striving for what is next and anticipating the future. Started only four and a half years ago, Ansley Real Estate now has 250 agents and has earned top awards with Inc. 5000, the Atlanta
Business Chronicle, and has been a Bulldog 100 award recipient for seven consecutive years. Bonneau and the entire Ansley company have made a giving partnership with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta a cornerstone of their community outreach and have donated more than $200,000 to date. All of this external success is built on a foundation of values, a firm belief in the culture of relationships and people first. Theses were the values Bonneau grew up with in Atlanta and Sea Island. When asked about his favorite thing to do, it is an easy answer: share experiences on Sea Island with his family. Eleven-year-old son, Beau, loves to fish and ride his bike all over the island. Daughter, Blakely, who is 15 years-old, competes nationally with her horses, and loves hanging out on the dock, tubing in the river, and playing pickle ball. Jen, Bonneau’s college sweetheart from The University of Georgia, says, “Sea Island is the perfect home away from home for the entire family.” Times change, but the love of life and family on Sea Island and St. Simons Island are eternal. You can find the Ansley Coastal Real Estate office at 301 Sea Island Road, Suite 28, St. Simons Island, or call 404.906.3161.

Are You Underinsured? Don’t Wait to Find Out! by C h r i s Te m p l e t o n , M o r r i s & Te m p l e t o n I n s u ra n ce
A
fter every natural disaster, too many people are faced with a harsh reality. They not only find their property and home destroyed, but they also discover that they might not have enough insurance to rebuild or fix the damage.
always be sure you have insurance to support that. Some homeowners also find themselves purchasing just enough protection to satisfy their mortgage lender, which isn’t always enough. Others confuse the real estate value of their home with what it would cost to rebuild it.
Did you know that two out of every three homeowners are underinsured by an average of 18%? That’s according to a survey by insurance services firm MSB. What exactly does that mean? If someone owns a $500,000 home, and they were underinsured by 18% when a disaster occurs, then they would find themselves $90,000 short in insurance coverage. Being underinsured could also mean losing your house if you get sued. Don’t be a statistic. Don’t wait for disaster to strike. Give Morris & Templeton Insurance a call to ensure that your home is properly covered.
Next, think about the contents inside your home. Generally speaking, most policies provide coverage for your personal possessions for 50 to 70 percent of the amount of insurance you have on the structure of your home. Take some time every year to take inventory of your personal items and ensure you have enough coverage. Your inventory report should detail everything you own and the estimated cost to replace each item if they are stolen or destroyed by a disaster.
When looking at your insurance policy, there are four important questions to ask yourself and your agent, in order to determine if you have adequate coverage. Do I have enough insurance to rebuild my home? Do I have enough insurance to replace everything inside my home? Am I covered for additional living expenses? Do I have enough to protect my assets? First and foremost, you should review your homeowners insurance policy every year. Over time, construction costs continue to rise, and it’s good to
Another important reminder is to make sure your insurance policy covers the extra costs of temporarily living, if you can’t live in your home due to disaster. For example, this could include hotels, restaurant meals, transportation, or rent to live somewhere else while your home is being rebuilt. It would not cover your mortgage, trips to the grocery store, or other regular living
expenses. If your standard coverage doesn’t seem to be enough, you can usually increase it for an additional premium. Finally, it’s always key to make sure you have enough liability protection. This covers you against lawsuits for injury or property damage you could cause to other people. It also pays for damage caused by pets. Liability insurance helps
cover both the cost of defending you in court and for the damages a court rules you must pay (up to the limitations of your policy). Being underinsured is a very common issue that many people aren’t aware exists until it’s too late. Take some time to assess your insurance coverage, or take the guesswork out of it and give Morris & Templeton Insurance a call to make sure you and your family are fully protected when the unexpected happens.

NONPROFIT NEWS PARTNERSHIP EXPANDS PROPERTY Fort Frederica National Monument’s boundaries have increased thanks to a nearly 15-year partnership with the St. Simons Land Trust. In 2007, the Land Trust purchased 20.852 acres of upland and marsh located off West Point Drive from Sea Island Company. At the time, the property contained 35 residential lot entitlements, with approximately half fronting the adjacent marsh and most visible from the public areas of the park, destroying an important view shed and the historical significance of the property. The Land Trust therefore acted quickly to purchase and hold the property until authority could be obtained and funding could be secured for the National Park Service to purchase it from the Land Trust. That finally happened when the John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation Management and Recreation Act was signed into law in
March 2019. Currently, Fort Frederica is developing nature trails with “wayside exhibits” and interpretive signage on the site. sslt.org
GLYNN VISUAL ARTS NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The GVA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Terri Evans has taken over the helm as Executive Director at Glynn Visual Arts. A seasoned professional who brings a wealth of experience in non-profit development, marketing and administration, Terri joined GVA as the Development Director in January of this year. Prior to that, she was the executive director of the Coastal Coalition for Children. Terri replaces Susan Ryles whose five-year tenure with Glynn Visual Arts has seen the organization grow and prosper as a key player in the cultural life of the Golden Isles community. “Susan Ryles has been an extraordinary executive director for Glynn Visual Arts and also a devoted champion for area artists and all visual arts in the community,” says Evans. “I’m grateful that she’s provided such a strong leadership foundation and also to the board of directors for their confidence.” glynnvisualarts.org
HOSPICE OF THE GOLDEN ISLES NAMES INTERIM CEO Susan de Cuba brings nearly 15 years of hospice and palliative experience and knowledge to Hospice of the Golden Isles (HGI). Tom Purdy, President, HGI Board of Directors said, “[Susan’] leadership experience with and passion for non-profit Hospice is a perfect fit for us as we continue to serve the Golden Isles community and search for a permanent CEO. Together with our HGI team, we know Susan will help us continue our outstanding track record of high-quality hospice care.” That track record includes being a HEALTHCAREfirst Hospice Honors recipient for the eighth consecutive year and the Elite designation for the fourth time in 2020. hospice.me

2020 LABOR DAY FESTIVAL The City of Brunswick in partnership with the Brunswick DDA is planning a big Labor Day Weekend celebration on Sunday, September 6. From 5:00 to 8:30 p.m., there will be fun with food trucks, crafts, and fireworks during this event on the Mary Ross Waterfront Park lawn. They’ll host the art contest, with voting for the official shrimp to be used for the 2021 New Year’s Eve Shrimp Drop, a return to a much-loved tradition. At 6 p.m. singer/songwriter Micah Bonn will perform a two-hour set for the second to last Rhythm on the River event for the year. At 8:10 p.m., the rescheduled 4th of July fireworks will begin. Come enjoy the festivities! For more information, visit discoverbrunswick.com. LITERARY GUILD WELCOMES AUTHOR JOHN CRIBB NYT best-selling author John Cribb will speak on “Lincoln’s Campaign and Election: 160 Years Ago” to the Literary Guild of St. Simons Island in Room 108 of the St. Simons Island Casino Building at 550 Beachview Dr. on September 22 at 10:30 am. The event is free for guild members and $10 for nonmembers. Cribb’s sweeping new work of historical fiction, “Old Abe” is the story of the last five years of Abraham Lincoln’s life, the most cataclysmic years of our nation’s history. A timely book during this election year, “Old Abe” portrays the great American leader who guided the country through, as Lincoln put it, a new birth of freedom. Every scene and character in this magnificent novel is based on actual events and shares little known, fascinating details that bring Abraham Lincoln, his family, and the conflicts of the Civil War to life. litguildssi.org
SHRIMP & GRITS FESTIVAL CANCELED Out of an interest for public health and safety in light of the current pandemic, the Jekyll Island Authority announced the cancellation of the 2020 Shrimp & Grits Festival. The decision was not made lightly and was based on many factors, including budgetary concerns and the uncertainly surrounding public events in the future. JIA plans for the festival to return on November 5-7, 2021. The Shrimp & Grits Festival, three times voted Best Festival in the Southeast (2012, 2017 & 2019) by the Southeast Festivals & Events Association, brings more than 45,000 people to Jekyll Island over a three-day weekend. The festival was set to mark its 15th anniversary this year. More than 200 artisans and Georgia Grown vendors participate each year, alongside numerous sponsors, and restaurant partners throughout the state who showcase their very own version of the Southern classic dish.

Historic Race Through St. Simons Sunshine
A
1950s Junior Chamber of Commerce scrapbook in the collection of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society reveals an interesting connection between the first annual Sunshine Festival on St. Simons Island and a significant event in the history of women’s aviation: the first women’s over-water International Air Race from Washington, D.C. to Havana, Cuba in 1955. Thirtysix airplanes entered the “capital to capital” event. More than 60 women aviators took off from Washington National Airport on June 10, after a rain delay. The race included a compulsory check-in at today’s St. Simons Island Airport, as well as Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was a happy coincidence that the women were scheduled to fly into St. Simons during an event that would become a community tradition, now associated with the Fourth of July. The 1955 Sunshine Festival was sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, or the Jaycees. In addition to acting as plane spotters, local
Jaycees organized hospitality and services for the aviators, some of whom stayed overnight. Among other items about the Festival, the scrapbook includes an August 11, 1955, letter of thanks from one of the pilots, who wrote, “We completely fell in love with your island and hope to be able to return in the future for a vacation when we would have more time to enjoy it fully.” The Air Race was sponsored by the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of women pilots established in 1929, with Amelia Earhart as the first president.
Named for the ninety-nine charter members, its purpose was to coordinate the interests and efforts of women in the aviation field, including service during times of war.
from factory to base. After the war, the Ninety-Nines continued to support women as professional pilots and aviation industry leaders, and today the organization has members throughout the world.
In 1941, with World War II threatening, the Ninety-Nines wrote to President Franklin Roosevelt offering to assist in the war effort. Ninety-Nines member Jacqueline Cochran became the first director of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), which drew heavily from NinetyNines membership to help train male pilots and to ferry aircraft
This month’s image is a photograph from the scrapbook showing the plane of Nancy Moore, chairman of the Washington, D.C. Ninety-Nines, during her stop here in June 1955. In front of the plane is local resident Ardelia Reese. The scrapbook was generously donated to the Society by Bill Strother, Jr., whose father was president of the organization that year.
