ne of my favorite movies with a “message” is Groundhog Day. It stars Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a cynical television weatherman covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He becomes trapped in a time loop that forces him to relive February 2 repeatedly. Since it was released in 1993, the film’s popularity has grown and many consider it to be one of the greatest comedy films of all time. “Groundhog Day” has even become part of our lexicon as a means to describe a monotonous, unpleasant, and repetitive situation. Well, it seems like life has been imitating art as we have been living somewhat of a real life Groundhog Day since March 2020. Our day to day lives have been upended for just about a year now. Wait a minute … maybe this all has something to do with Bill Murray doing that Groundhog Day Super Bowl Commercial for Jeep last February!

But there is light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. Phil Connors finally realized he can change for the better. If he can, why can’t we? As you enjoy our February issue, please take time to celebrate every day and reflect on all of the great people and places we have here on our beloved island. Hopefully, this Groundhog Day will be our “re-set” and the beginning of a wonderful year. Stay safe, don’t drive angry, and remember: I Got You Babe!

It’s time to celebrate! What’s the occasion? Life! It may be cliché, but if 2020 has taught us anything it is that each day truly is a gift. In these strange times of Zoom call holiday gatherings and drive-by birthday parades, we have also learned how to appreciate the everyday and to find something good in every day. So, in that spirit, we’re celebrating all month long. In case you need a reason, we’ve found a holiday, “national day,” or special occasion for each day. Now, let’s get festive!

six more weeks of winter will follow. If that does occur, our fuzzy prognosticator retreats into his den and goes back to sleep. If he doesn’t see his shadow, he stays outside to play and that signals that spring is just around the corner. The tradition of predicting the length of the remaining winter is intertwined with the Christian holiday, Candlemas. On Candlemas, the clergy blessed candles symbolizing the light of the world to give to the members of their congregation. Folklore about the weather on Candlemas Day shares that if

it “be fair and bright” that “Winter will have another fight.” But if “Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain, Winter won’t come again.” When this weather prediction tradition reached Germany, somehow a hedgehog became involved in the practice. When the Germans emigrated to the United States and settled in the hills of Pennsylvania, there were no hedgehogs to be found, so a groundhog became the weather predictor. T
he American Heart Association proclaimed February as
NATIONAL HEART MONTH and uses this month to promote awareness that anyone can be at risk for heart disease. Our increasingly sedentary lifestyles put us at
risk at a younger age, with obesity, high blood pressure, and smoking all increasing the risk factors. This is the month to concentrate on taking steps to decrease those risks. Get moving with daily exercise. Even walking the dog and taking the stairs instead of an elevator are an improvement if you can’t make it to a gym. Walking is one of the healthiest and safest activities you can do for yourself. It’s also important to remove stress from your life. In today’s world that might be a near impossible task, so try to find stress-relievers to counteract it. Long baths, massage sessions, and yoga are all great ways to combat stress. Quit smoking. Even if you’ve tried before and failed. Keep trying until it sticks! Eat more fruits and veggies. Reduce the amount of fast food and sugary drinks you consume. Even small changes help make a difference. If you haven’t talked to your doctor about heart health and your risk factors, take the opportunity to do that this month. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in women. The American Heart Association started the Go Red for Women campaign in 2004 to raise awareness about women’s heart health. NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY is observed
on the first Friday in February as part of their annual campaign to raise awareness. They estimate that heart disease and stroke kill one in every three women and 80% of these deaths may be preventable, according to data at goredforwomen.org. Wear red, on FEBRUARY 5, the brighter the better. If people compliment you on the color or ask you why you’ve got on the jaunty cherry-red scarf, be sure to explain why. Maybe it can help save a life. 36

It’s also common knowledge that Musgrove Retreat served as a getaway for President Jimmy Carter. Gratitude for the Givers
O
n FEBRUARY 19 dedicate some love to the people dedicated to caring
for the ones we love. NATIONAL CAREGIVERS DAY was founded by Providers
Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies in 2015 to honor health care professionals across the country providing long-term and hospice care. Caregivers provide vital services and support, often during long
and demanding days, to the patients who need it most and the families who love them. Surprise the caregivers in your life with a goody bag or a special basket of their favorite treats. Slip a restaurant or coffee shop gift card inside a note of thanks. If you’d like to see how you can help make the load lighter for the caregivers at our local hometown hospice, Hospice of the Golden Isles, consider volunteering or becoming a member of their Auxiliary. For more information, visit their website at hospice.me. Another type of caregiver that deserves a shout-out in February is our lady docs.
NATIONAL WOMEN PHYSICIANS DAY on FEBRUARY 3 honors the path that female doctors have paved throughout the years. The day is celebrated on birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States in 1849. She initiated the movement that helped women gain entry and equality in the field of medicine. Celebrate the day by binging on old seasons of Grey’s Anatomy to see those women at work!
FEBRUARY 14 isn’t just for lovers, it’s NATIONAL DONOR DAY too. Established in 1998, this day is to highlight the importance of the role that organ donors play in saving lives each year and to thank those who give. It’s estimated that more than 120,000 people in the United States are currently waiting for life-saving organ donation and approximately every two seconds there’s someone in the country who needs blood. Every type of donation, whether organs, tissue, marrow, blood, or platelets, is a gift of life. Honor the day by looking into becoming a donor at organdonor.gov. Even easier, find a nearby blood drive location by searching redcrossblood.org or oneblood.org and go donate, if you can. Not only do you get to feel good about helping others, but you also get a thank you gift for your donation and might even be able to register to win prizes. At the least, you’ll get cookies!

DRINK WINE DAY! (As if we really needed a special day
to do this!) Benjamin Franklin said, “Wine
makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.” If that isn’t reason enough, scientific research has revealed that there are also health benefits to drinking wine (in moderation, of course). Wine, especially white wine, is full of antioxidants that fight off harmful free radicals. It reduces the risk of many types of cancer. The resveratrol in red wine is particularly beneficial in fighting cancer cells, lowering cholesterol, and for its anti-aging properties. Wine has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. It’s known to boost immunity, increase bone density, and improve cognitive function as well. All in all, wine can make you healthier, happier, and help you to live longer. Cheers! In case you miss out on National Drink Wine Day, there are also other wine days to observe. There’s National Wine Day on May 25, as well as National Red Wine Day, National Moscato Day and National Rosé Day. For those who prefer a more sparkling experience, there’s National Prosecco Day, National Bubbly Day, and even National Mimosa Day. We also have a National Sangria Day to enjoy the fruity Spanish wine punch, and National Mulled Wine Day for a warm and spicy treat. And don’t forget National Wine and Cheese Day, because a perfect pairing should be celebrated too. We sure do love our wine!

Introducing your hosts: Established in 2017, Golden Isles Wedding Association (GIWA) is a trusted, local network of reputable wedding professionals that strives to continuously improve wedding quality and strength in the Golden Isles. Its mission is to grow the wedding industry in the Golden Isles by promoting the Golden Isles as a premier destination for nuptial celebrations and by advertising its members as the best resources for local weddings. Member meetings are held on a monthly basis and include educational and networking sessions, as well as spotlight venue tours that are open to the public.
Cedar Lodge on Honey Creek is an ideal venue for weddings, rehearsal dinners, parties, and corporate events. Additional amenities include a custom stone fireplace, cornhole, fire pits, and bridal suite equipped with a floor-toceiling mirror, private restroom, and wet bar. Sports Shorts Athletes who call St. Simons Island home have been making some waves in the sports scene lately. While sports reporting isn’t our forte, we thought we’d highlight a few noteworthy moments in case you missed them.
G
lynn Academy alumnus Jack Podlesny started the New Year out in stellar style for the Georgia Bulldogs. With only two seconds left in the game, “Hot Pod” kicked a career long 53-yard field goal that gave the trailing Dawgs a 22-21 lead over the Cincinnati Bearcats and led to their ultimate victory in the 2021 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Jack Frost might be a better nickname for the former GA soccer and football standout for the ice in his veins that it took to make that kick! The walk-on redshirt sophomore who had the daunting task of filling the shoes of Rodrigo Blankenship was 10/13 on field goals and 37/37 on PATs prior to the Peach Bowl. Podlesny was a 2020 semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, which goes annually to the nation’s top collegiate placekicker and was won by Blankenship in 2019. The Golden Isles community was bursting with pride to be able to claim this young man as one of our own. Way to go, Jack!

Turning to golf, local PGA TOUR player Harris English recently won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii with a birdie on the first hole in a playoff with Joaquin Niemann. Addressing the honor, Adam said, “This is the crown jewel of any award I have ever received! But, to me, it’s more than just an award. What Mr. Clemente stood for, and the way he lived his life on and off the field, goes beyond what any award could fully embody. Even being mentioned in the same sentence with him is an incredible honor. I feel very blessed and honored to receive the Clemente Award, and I will continue to try and live up to his standards as long as I live. And, the reason we feel led to help people is not for trophies or accolades of any kind … but I have to admit … this trophy is pretty awesome! Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this happen. It is truly a dream come true.”
was the third-round co-leader at 21-under, but was even par through 11 holes on the Plantation Course and had to chase down Niemann, who closed with a 64. Birdies on 5 of the last holes kept him in the hunt. English’s win nearly came on the final hole after bringing his second shot within 10 feet of the cup on the par-5 18th. He missed the eagle putt, but tapped in for birdie to close with a 4-under 69 for the day and 25 under for the tournament. Back on 18 for the playoff, he wrapped up the win with a 6-footer birdie. English also paired up with another St. Simons Island PGA TOUR golfer, Matt Kuchar, to become the first team to win the QBE Shootout at Tiburon Golf Club in Buena Vista three times, breaking several records they had previously set. Matt’s 13-year old son, Cameron, caddied for him at the shootout, then took up the clubs himself to play with Matt at the PNC Championship 2020 Father-Son Challenge at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Grande Lakes. While they led through Round 1, they didn’t ultimately take home the win, ending the tournament T-5 (ahead of Tiger and Charlie, in case you were wondering). They sure did play some fine golf and have a great time that was fun to watch. Can’t wait to see what 2021 holds for our hometown athletes, wherever they may play!

Know Before You Go

very spring I receive emails about upcoming wedding etiquette and Easter attire but another frequently requested item is a list of tips for the child who is about to leave the nest. Yes, they can eat a meal properly and say please and thank you. Parents have done a great job, but they always want to know what they are forgetting to remind their children of when they head off to college or a new job in the coming months after graduation. Venturing out on your own is exciting and also a big learning experience. So much of “etiquette” revolves around a set of rules and suggestions written out merely to help all of us get along. Defining “good” manners is not an attempt to make humans feel bad about what they do not know; these guidelines are actually set up to help us. The root of each of these suggestions really comes down to being kind. Here are some of my top reminders for the young people in your life: Respecting Roommates The old phrase “Your mother does not live here.” is now true. Pick up after yourself and go
80
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
the extra step. Set a few house rules for when you have guest over. If you are an early riser, be considerate of roommates that worked late or studied all evening. Traveling with Friends Some of the best memories in life will come from your journeys and you will find a group you enjoy being with on these adventures. Take into consideration things such as splitting the cost gas if you are traveling by car and being respectful of arriving on time for a shuttle if a large group is traveling together. Putting your Phone Down Cell phones will still be a big part of adult life, but you don’t need them visible when you are on a date, having lunch with friends, or enjoying a sporting event. Talk with those around you. Verbal communications skills are important in social and professional relationships. Practice, practice, practice. Communicating with Professors While the internet has made life as a student easier in many ways, it took out many face to face interactions. I always encourage students to meet professors face to face at least once a semester, if possible. Nothing takes the place of face to face conversation. Remember to proofread emails before you send them and be very clear, brief and kind. Read over it before you hit send. Address the professor appropriately. For example, “Dear Dr. Fleming.” Follow all communication guidelines given to you by the school/teacher.
Expressing Opinions Yes, we may need to keep many of our opinions to ourselves in certain situations. However, discuss polite ways to stand up for yourself and what you believe in and review how to end a discussion in a kind way. We all have opinions and being respectful of others is a part of life. Being a Good Guest Making new friends and visiting their families is another benefit of college life. Always arrive on time, speak to parents and family when you first arrive, bring a very small gift, go with the flow of your friend’s family, and keep your sleeping area tidy. When leaving to head back to school, ask how you can help clean the room you slept in. Can you pull the sheets off the bed for your host? Can you bring the dirty towels to the laundry? Most importantly, have FUN! Jennifer Daniel is a graduate of The Protocol School of Washington and she may be reached at Jennifer@polishedpeyton.com or visit her website at polishedpeyton.com.

The Heck with Resolutions By John Adams
I suspect that, like me, you have been properly preoccupied with implementing the many varied resolutions you made to yourself on New Year’s Day. My perennial favorite is weight loss. And I do, in fact, have good intentions. But on St. Simons Island, my best plans always seem to be thwarted. The problem here is the Georgia Shrimp Association. Ever since they started this Wild Georgia Shrimp (WGS) campaign to stamp out what amounts to imitation shrimp raised in ponds “somewhere else,” I have found myself unable to resist the sweet, succulent and delicious shrimp dishes available both at the store and on the plates of local restaurants. And it’s really not my fault. I am just as happy with a large platter of Wild Georgia Shrimp boiled in “fish boil” with cayenne and hot sauce added for a little kick as I am with “shrimp étouffée.” (Please don’t ask me to explain why that second word has those funny marks above the first and second E but not the third one. I don’t have a clue. In fact, I don’t even know what the word means, but I don’t like the sound of it.)
Then it stole my stomach. I ate enough of this delicious concoction to feed a small army, then, of course, had to take a nap, as it is a well-known fact that consuming Wild Georgia Shrimp causes an uncontrollable desire to nap. During my nap, I dreamed that I was visited by the Ghost of New Year’s Present, in the form of a jumbo Wild Georgia Shrimp. I asked him, “Why is Georgia shrimp so good?” He replied, “The natural food source for Wild Georgia Shrimp comes from the nutrients supplied by the clean, coastal, Spartina marshes and estuaries that define the Georgia coast. The area’s strong tides combined with natural filtration through Georgia’s expansive marshland give the shrimp a sweet succulent taste and a good firm texture
that can only be produced in the wild.” Then he jumped off the end of the St. Simons pier and swam away. So my weight loss resolution has once again fallen by the wayside. But I do have a new motto to carry me happily into 2021:
Friends don’t let friends eat pond-raised shrimp.
In any case, the boss whipped up a dish of the stuff I just mentioned and it stole my heart.

Your home is more than a building or an address. It’s where you experience life, connection, and growth. That is why our agents find what they do so rewarding! Each month we are going to take you into the home of one of our agents. See what they love and value most about their homes and where they live. What could be better than living steps from the beach and close to the best of what St. Simons Island offers? My neighborhood, Ocean Breeze offers just that. I have the best neighbors one of which has been my best friend for over twenty five years. Our neighborhood has a variety of homes from remodeled beach cottages from the 30’s and 40’s to newly constructed homes. There are always people outside, walking their dogs, working in the yard, walking to nearby restaurants, visiting neighbors, and having cookouts. The small town camaraderie is exactly what I love about St. Simons. I absolutely love where I live. I moved into my house this past summer after my youngest child, Payton went to college. In the short amount of time, I have been in this home I have really tried making it my own. Recently I replaced all the exterior shutters and re-landscaped my yard. I am thrilled with how it looks now. My favorite plant is my bird of paradise given to me by a neighbor. We have an outdoor courtyard with a fireplace where we spend most of our evenings. It’s one of my favorite spots. Throughout the years selling real estate I have really grown to love and appreciate interior design. I have a very eclectic design taste which leans towards the side of modern. Some of my most loved pieces are original mid century pieces, such as my Murano lamp and Pierangello Gallotti console. One of my favorite pieces of artwork is by Susan Hable out of Athens, Georgia which is my hometown. I also treasure my family photography by LA based photographer Trish Reda. All of these elements have really helped my house feel like a home. My favorite thing to do at home is to cook and spend time with my family and friends. I believe a home is meant to be lived in and shared and that is why I always want people to feel welcome. When I am not at home or working, I love walking our dogs to the beach which is just a few blocks away from my house. We also love walking to and dining at the nearby local restaurants and I frequent Pelicans Market. They have everything I ever need! St. Simons Island offers an unparalleled quality of life which makes my job as a realtor so rewarding. The Matchless Ethel Waters Visits SSI
B
orn in Pennsylvania in 1896, Ethel Waters overcame poverty and discrimination to achieve many firsts for African American women, including first to sing on the radio, first to star in her own television show, and first to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
After touring in vaudeville shows, Waters made her Broadway debut in 1927 and acted in her first film in 1929. She appeared at New York City’s Cotton Club with Duke Ellington in the 1930s and recorded with both Ellington and Benny Goodman. In 1939, she starred in Dorothy and Dubose Heyward’s acclaimed play Mamba’s Daughters, her first dramatic role. In 1949, Waters’ role in the film Pinky earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. For her performance in Carson McCullers’ play Member of the Wedding, she won the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Actress in 1950. She repeated the role in film and received another Oscar nomination.
Despite her many successes, Waters was in poor health and deeply in debt by the mid-1950s. Seeking spiritual renewal, she attended a Billy Graham Crusade at Madison Square Garden in 1957. The religious revival was a transformative experience, and for the remaining two decades of her life, Waters was a frequent soloist at Graham’s events. St. Simons Island author Eugenia Price, also a friend of Billy Graham, was a longtime fan of Ethel Waters. Price met Waters during one of the author’s West Coast speaking tours and wrote in her St. Simons memoir, “When I learned that the great Ethel Waters was to sing before I spoke, I became almost tongue-tied.” In 1971, Price’s friend and fellow author Joyce Blackburn suggested that she and Price work with Waters on an autobiography of the
performer’s later life. Waters’ best-selling first memoir, His Eye is on the Sparrow, had been written in 1951. After receiving Waters’ approval, the writers flew to Los Angeles and recorded hours of interviews at the performer’s home. Waters’ recollections were edited to produce the autobiography, To Me It’s Wonderful, published in 1972. This month’s image from the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s Eugenia Price Collection shows Ethel Waters with Price and Blackburn when she arrived at Malcolm McKinnon Airport on St. Simons in August 1971. For
several days, she stayed at their home “The Dodge” on the Frederica River, while reviewing the manuscript. Also shown is a photograph Waters inscribed “to Genie and Joyce.”
