PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Eudaimonia in the New Year

eudaimonic [yoo-di-mon-ik] adjective Pertaining or conducive to happiness.

T

he word eudaimonic refers to the type of happiness or well-being that stems from meaning and self-realization. It’s the feeling of deep contentment you get after volunteering at STAR Foundation or a humane society, as opposed to the quick hit of pleasure you get from eating chocolate cake (which I LOVE to do!) A dose of eudaimonic happiness lasts longer and tends to perpetuate itself. We’ve all heard the term “words to live by” and there is no shortage of inspirational life quotes. As we begin a new year with new resolutions, here are some good ones to help you get started on 2017: “Just know, when you truly want success, you’ll never give up on it. No matter how bad the situation may get”

CHEERS TO 2017!

“I don’t regret the things I’ve done, I regret the things I didn’t do when I had the chance.” “Forget all the reasons it won’t work and believe the one reason that it will.”

“Good things come to those who wait. Greater things come to those who get off their duff and do anything to make it happen.”

“Love what you have. Need what you want. Accept what you receive. Give what you can. Always remember, what goes around, comes around.” “The biggest failure you can have in life is making the mistake of never trying at all.” “Life has two rules: #1 Never quit. #2 Always remember rule #1.” The above quotes have a common theme for me personally. 2017 marks the beginning of Elegant Island Living’s 15th year. Each quote above has at one point or another inspired the EIL team to “work a little harder, stay up a little later, go a little farther” in our efforts to bring you, the reader, the very BEST local lifestyle publication. Thank you for following us for the past fourteen years. I was blessed to have grown up here and I’m equally blessed to have been able to come back and live and work in such an amazing place, surrounded by wonderful friends and family. Truly I am living an eudaimonic Elegant Island life. Here’s to a very happy 2017 for us all!

your space into your dream home. Stephanie Nieuwendijk-Bramble, Owner/Creative Director, says that they can help in a variety of ways. They can come in, look at what you have, and make recommendations on how you can change the room by moving furniture or bringing in new pieces and accessories. If you want to go a step further, she says, they can help you select paint colors, lighting, and floor coverings too. She says they can even guide you through a complete room remodel if you’re thinking

about changing the space entirely by knocking out a wall, or can create the look you desire from scratch with a new construction project. “We have been doing more this last year, customers would come in needing held and direction with their homes, whether it was a new home they were moving into or a renovation.” She adds, “The manager from my Highlands store has recently relocated to South Georgia, so is now working with Sharon and (continues)

“Walking into a space and seeing it for the first time allows me to view a project from a different point of view. It’s the ability to imagine what the space could look like from start to finish. What if we were to remove a wall, or reveal and open up a space with a vaulted ceiling? Perhaps we could add new flooring or simply

replace rugs, pick out new paint colors, add a few new pieces of furniture, or just change out the accessories? All and all for me it is the rearranging of a space with layers that will update a dated look to today.” This is how she recently approached the design of the newly opened store in Chamblee, and also how (continues)

WISHING YOU A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR

she works with clients who request her assistance with renovations, finish selections, new furniture, and creation of a final completed look.

By following six simple steps, Stephanie says anyone – yes, even you! – can develop their own dream home:

1. Know your boundaries with rugs. Furniture can go all on, all off, or front on (only the front feet of your seating pieces rest on the rug).

2

. Choose the star of the show. There should be that one piece to which your eye is drawn to when you first enter the room. That should be the focal point and the anchor which everything else complements.

3. Place accessories in odd numbers; threes and fives are more pleasing to the eye than even numbers.

4. Don’t rely solely on overhead lights! Layer your lighting with chandeliers, table lamps and other ambient lighting.

5. Stay away from overcrowding a room with too many pieces.

6. Hang pictures and artwork so they’re within anyone’s sight line (Hint: the average human eye level is 57 inches!). If you follow those steps, Stephanie says it’s simple to create the look you’ve always imagined for your dream home. However, if you still want a professional eye, you can contact Dutchmans for a little nudge in the right direction. They can help you design rooms to last a decade, not just for the latest trend. They believe in little investments like paint, new pillows and throws, lamps, and maybe a rug, to transform a look. They are also aware that

mixing florals and stripes doesn’t come easy to everyone and understand that proportion play may not be in your regular vocabulary. So if it’s a challenge for you to visualize your own space, Dutchman’s is happy to be your style guide of inspiration. Dutchmans is located at 312 Mallery St. on St. Simons Island. Stop in or call 912.634.2764. You can also shop online, learn more about Dutchmans and their products, and see rooms Stephanie has transformed at dutchmansdesigns.com.

Great Golf & Giving Back

The RSM Classic, PGA TOUR and Fed Ex Cup golf tournament is certainly known for high caliber play on the greens, however, this event is equally impressive for how much it gives back to the community and various charities in so many ways.

R

SM Classic week ended with an exciting playoff round of golf on a very chilly and unexpected Monday morning, but what some people don’t realize is that the tournament events began on a cold driving range the Monday before. That was the morning of the Birdies for the Brave Callaway Warriors Club Fitting. U.S. ARMY Sgt. First Class Joe LeCara and Lt. Jesse Cazaux, both combat wounded soldiers, were fitted in the Callaway trailer and then hit the Sea Island driving range to try clubs and have their swings analyzed. Cal-

laway representatives gave them tips and they also got to meet last year’s RSM Classic winner, Kevin Kisner, as well as other PGA Tour pros and visitors who came out to the range. The soldiers will each receive a set of custom-fitted golf clubs, a golf bag, and other equipment from Callaway Golf free of charge as part of the Birdies for the Brave program. The 2016 PGA TOUR season hosts Callaway Warrior Club Fittings at 15 tournaments across the nation, fitting 30 combat-injured warriors in a mission to aid in both the physical and psychological rehabilitation process, as well as to express gratitude for their service and sacrifice. RSM also gave back

to the military community this year by presenting a $10,000 check to Folds of Honor. Bill Gorman, Chief Operating Officers for RSM US LLP, said “I am pleased that we have been able to raise funds to support the families of those who have been injured or lost their lives in service to our country.” Another event that gives back during RSM Classic week is the annual Wiffle Ball Classic hosted by the PGA TOUR Wives. This fun Wiffle ball game pits the wives against their PGA TOUR pro golfer husbands on teams that include students from Altama Elementary School. The charity chosen by the PGA (continues)

TOUR Wives to benefit from the Wiffle Ball Classic is Blessings in a Backpack, and this year they were able to donate $35,000 to the Glynn Co. chapter. One of the highlights of the week was the Charity Putting Challenge. This event pairs PGA TOUR pros with Special Olympics athletes and members of Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia for a friendly putting competition. The 12-hole course is custom designed

by teaching pros at the Sea Island Golf Performance Center and has obstacles created from driftwood, shells, rocks and sand. If you want to restore your faith in humanity, spend a few hours at this event. There were holes-in-one, hugs, and high-fives. Celebrations and smiles were abundant and watching the teams work together and support each other is absolutely priceless. No matter who was named “champion” and took home the trophy that day, everyone who was there was a winner!

The local group has produced an annual festival since 1987 that includes local artists and has a different theme each year. This year, the theme was Big Bright Beautiful VSA World and was inspired by Shrek, The Musical. Grants from Hello GoodBuy and the Christ Church Frederica Episcopal Church Women, as well as contributions from Ron Rector, Brooke Sumerford, Ed and Lynn Turner, and supporters of the Shrek Ear fundraiser helped fund the VSA festival this year. So many others were valuable participants: Brunswick High School Art teacher Joan Nichols, who brought her miniature donkey Gussie (a big festival favorite!) as well as her art students; Debbie Dolivera, Tony Tennent and Brenda Hunt with St. Francis Xavier 8th Grade; Jody Bradford, Fred-

erica Academy, Honor Society; Glynn Academy Drama Teacher Josh Sinyard and his actors Luke Brown (Donkey), Kylie Knox (Fiona), and the fabulous dragon; Heather Heath and Kelly Hunter of Golden Isles Arts & Humanities and the Penguin Project, local artists Cathy Dart and Eda D’Onofrio; Selden Park staff members Mary Daniels and Willie Banfield. Coordinator Mardi Johnston hopes to spread the word about the event and invite the community and more local artists to participate in future festivals. It definitely takes a village! And how wonderful it is that our village loves the arts and its youth! Going Out – with a – Victory

t. Francis Xavier Crusaders said goodbye to their girls’ volleyball coach, Mike Tennent, after he led the school to seven Middle School Championships. The undefeated St. Francis Xavier Crusaders girls’ volleyball team finished the 2016 season by defeating the Glynn Middle Hurricanes to clinch the Middle School Championship. The victory this year by the girls’ volleyball team was somewhat bittersweet. The founder and biggest supporter of the team, Coach Mike Tennent, announced that he was retiring. Coach Tennent began working at St. Francis Xavier as a Physical Education teacher following his retirement from the National Park Service, where his last station was Fort Frederica. He also coached soccer and started the girls’ volleyball program in 2005. Coach Tennent retired from teaching after two years, but continued coaching the girls’ volleyball team as a volunteer. During his tenure at St. Francis, Coach Tennent successfully won a total of seven Glynn County Middle School Volleyball Championships. This year, the team also TOP: 2016 St. Francis Xavier Championship Team. ABOVE: Coach Mike Tennent.

received support from Lance Turpin as assistant coach and Gaby Soler-Jensen as a volunteer. Coach Tennent attributes much of his success to the widespread participation of the students. “I try to make it fun and I think we’ve been

successful.” Coach Tennent utilizes an A and B team approach, where the upperclassmen and more experienced girls generally play on the A team. However, he strives to get as much playing time for the B team girls as possible so that they can develop. Kelsey Ann Cabiness, one of this year’s Co-Captains noted the system helped her develop as a younger player and that many of the former starters, some who now play for the Glynn Academy Red Terror team, were her role models. For Coach Tennent, the fourth Glynn County championship was an emotional victory. While he looks forward to another retirement, and possibly a little more golf, he will miss all the girls. He hopes the girls, from each of the seasons, will carry forth their faith, the lessons they have learned, and the love of the game wherever life may lead.

ISLAND IMPRESSIONS BY FR. TOM PURDY, RECTOR OF CHRIST CHURCH

Begin Again. W And Again.

ell, it’s a new year and a new you. That is, if you are a New Year’s resolution person. And if you are, that means you’re also an optimist. About 75% of those who make resolutions will keep them … for the first week. It goes downhill quickly after that. If you’re older, you’re even less likely to keep a resolution. I’ll let you decide what older means, but either way, good luck! Most of us will still accidentally be

48

If only it were that easy. writing 2016 on our checks long after the resolutions have been broken. Even if you didn’t know the New Year was arriving because of the TV specials, or because the ghost of Dick Clark visited you in a dream, you’d know by the TV commercials. The fitness cartels come at us from all sides every January. The diet gurus flash “before” and “after” shots at every break. They know we’re in a weakened state. They know we ate too much between Thanksgiving and Christmas. They know how hopeful we feel as we watch Father Time lumber away and Baby New Year toddle in. If it seems like every other advertisement is for Jenny Craig or a gym, it’s because they are. Weight loss is the most popular pledge in the New Year, but we make, and consequently break, a whole host of other resolutions too. We might pledge to limit our gossip, until we just can’t sit on a particularly juicy bit of news. Perhaps we insist we will call our mother more often, with the oftrelated resolution to not let the accompanying criticism get under our skin. When the latter doesn’t work we abandon the former. Sometimes we promise ourselves we’ll start reading non-fiction books instead of those dystopian novels we love so much, although

some of those plot lines sound similar to what’s in the news lately. I think that we play this game because of the promise held by a new year. We literally get to turn the page and start over again in our planners, and we have a sense of how much we’d love to do that in real life too. For most of us, it’s not that we don’t like ourselves per se, it’s just that we have an idea of who we are that may or may not match reality. We’re not really as old as we look in that photo, are we? We’re not going to weigh his much forever – that’s why we keep all those clothes we can’t wear anymore! In those moments when we recognize the gap between our self perception and our reality we are sitting ducks for a free first month and squeeze bottle at Planet Fitness or the first week of free “chef inspired” food by the numbers. If only it were that easy. I’m not saying New Year’s resolutions are bad; I think anything that makes us healthier or smarter or nicer is worth pursuing. But I do think New Year’s resolutions are somewhat arbitrary. The more short-lived they are, the more they make us feel bad. It’s too easy to break a resolution. Most of us rarely give ourselves permission for failure. If we fail, we’re done. And once we fail, we

often lack the motivation to keep going. So how do we alter our behavior and change our ways when it is so easy to fail? St. Benedict (who I’ve mentioned before) had some words of wisdom along these lines a long time ago: “Always we begin again.” It was his way of acknowledging that we often fail. When it happens, we don’t beat ourselves up or fall into despair. Instead, we simply acknowledge that we need to begin again. I didn’t mean to eat the whole pizza; I’ll only eat half next time. I haven’t run in a month; I don’t need to run for miles, just a few minutes as a first step. I’ve let my prayer life slip away; I won’t be able to sit in meditation for thirty minutes every day, but I can talk to God right now. New Year’s resolutions are usually too grand and too fragile. So skip the New Year stuff and just determine what is important to you and decide to begin doing something different. You don’t need a new you; just be who you want to be. Tell yourself you’ll be successful, but also admit from the start that you’ll fail at some point, and commit to beginning again when you do. And if Dick Clark does visit you in a dream, remember that he’s the patron saint of beginning again, and again, and again. He might be trying to tell you something.

ith 2017 marking Elegant Island Living’s 15th year, we turn our thoughts to all the different features we’ve written, events we have covered, and the many people we have met who have become a part of EIL’s story. There are the subjects of our articles, our advertisers, photographers, models, and many more people with whom we work each issue, and, of course, we wouldn’t be here without our readers. Recently we spoke with reader Carolyn Hatala about her writing. Carolyn graduated from Glynn Academy and Brunswick College (now the College of Coastal Georgia). She retired for the Board of Education after a career in Special Education. 50

Carolyn wasn’t keen on telling us too much about herself, but she eagerly offered up stories about growing up on St. Simons Island. She mentioned going to the beach and dancing at the casino, lively picnics under the giant oak, and walking hand in hand with her friends on the wooden pier. She said, “I could tell you about the causeway’s old wooden bridges and when we all stopped and helped turtles cross the road safely. I could tell you about the scent of honeysuckles, wild azaleas, and the giant magnolias that greeted us when crossing onto the island. Of beach towels that filled with sand while white-haired boys played and tanskinned girls forgot about tomorrow.”

Carolyn was gracious enough to send EIL some of her island inspired poems to share. BREEZES

THRIVE I

f you’re like most people, you think today’s new Assisted Living and Memory Care communities are born in boardrooms. And in most cases, you’d be right. But there’s one that got its start right in an Assisted Living community. Tod Petty, was a 40-something Assisted Living Business Development Manager living in a 400 sq. ft. room in the community. For one year, he witnessed and experienced the best and worst senior living had to offer. He saw first-hand 56

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

D I F F E R E N C E how residents lived and how they were treated. Tod was struck by the lack of relevance that residents felt and it made an indelible impression on him. He saw the seniors had lost connection with friends and family, they were bored by unimaginative activities, and their lives were adrift without purpose. These observations fueled the rest of his professional accomplishments. Today, Tod is the President of Thrive Senior Living, which operates Thrive at Frederica. Beyond providing excellent care, Tod’s mission of

creating connected, active, and purposeful lives for residents drives the innovations at Thrive. Residents can stay connected to family and friends using social media and technologies like Skype. Tod replaced the ordinary activities of “Bingo and birthdays” with engaging interactive tools, such as It’s Never 2 Late software. This powerful interactive software allows seniors to create digital stories of their lives, explore the world, or stroll through the historic events they witnessed.

WE CARE ABOUT YOU!

IN2L has large icons making it simple to navigate and has hundreds of options for seniors, some of which are challenging games. Memory care offers a big challenge to Tod’s vision, but he has applied his thinking there as well. Typically, memory care units are scaled down versions of Tod Petty, president of Thrive Senior Living

assisted living. At Thrive at Frederica, residents never share rooms and shower facilities. Walk into Thrive’s memory care and you’ll find few differences from the rest of the community, because memory care residents enjoy the same luxury and privacy. The memory care staff only serve that unit

and are under the direction of a Memory Care Coordinator. The residents use the IN2L software, eat in a family-style dining room, and have their own safe courtyard. Tod knows the aging process can remove a person’s motivation to keep living a life of vitality, so Thrive at Frederica is a community in which those who want to enjoy time with other people in the same season of life, can do so in luxury. Residents have the opportunity to socialize over meals, and while that can happen anywhere, the Thrive dining experience provides unmatched choice and independence. “Assisted Living Like You’ve Never Seen Before,” like Thrive at Frederica, was also developed in a way you’ve never seen before – born in a real community instead of a

BUSINESS BUZZ

BLENDING BUSINESS AND LEISURE Rachel Berg, lifestyle architect, is bringing a new experiential offering to St. Simons Island that blends business and leisure. As a Corporate Leadership Development Consultant, Rachel spent years working with executives as they struggled with the 24/7 nature of business. When “leisure time” was suggested they calculated the cost and lost productivity and groaned. From her own life, Rachel knew that the minute she got her toes in the sand her head seemed to clear and the right path would emerge. It was her secret formula. Rachel began to speculate, what if her executives could combine business and leisure? If they could work with a business consultant while on “island time?” Could leisure be built into a business success scenario? The solution emerged as The Lifestyle Sandbox, a place to find “island time” and consulting services. Hundreds of volunteers from the community welcome visitors and media from all over to enjoy this world-class golf experience. From charity and pro-am events to an unexpected extra very chilly morning of play-off golf that resulted in an impressive win from Mackenzie Hughes, the action was non-stop! And the RSM Classic trophy was not the only hardware on display this week, we also saw Wesley Bryan accept his award as Web.com Tour Player of the Year, and the Ryder Cup made some appearances with tournament host, Davis Love III. There was even a special champagne toast event for Davis to celebrate his upcoming induction in to the World Golf Hall of Fame Class of 2017. MORE THAN 300 GUESTS WERE IN ATTENDANCE WHEN GEORGIA GOVERNOR NATHAN DEAL AND FIRST LADY SANDRA DEAL VISITED JEKYLL ISLAND to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony for Camp Jekyll. The new facility occupies the same site as the original Jekyll Island 4-H Center and now houses 12 new buildings, including a new state-of-the-art learning center with auditorium and classrooms named for the First Lady. Camp Jekyll is a JIA-owned property which will be operated by Georgia 4-H starting in February and will continue the tradition of teaching youth about the rich environmental life inhabiting the area. There will be a multitude of programs run by the Georgia 4-H staff and other camps hosted on the campus. Jones Hooks stated, “Camp Jekyll will now reach more than 13,000 children annually through environmental education and summer camp programs.” 70

Food for Thought: Remembering Everett’s Grocery Store

A

s we begin a New Year, it’s interesting to look back to a local January tradition. Many people have favorite wall calendars that they display year after year. On St. Simons Island in the 1940s, the calendar from Everett’s Grocery Store was probably a favorite among homemakers. Providing “staple and fancy groceries,” Everett’s was located at the corner of Mallery Street and Butler Avenue in the Village. The store was operated by Livingston W. Everett, known to everyone as Dutch. He and his wife Mary Gould lived near the St. Simons Lighthouse. Mary, a descendant of the builder

and keeper of the first lighthouse, was the island postmistress for many years and a valuable source of local information. By sharing her Gould family history with Eugenia Price, Mary became a source for the author’s book Beloved Invader and her two subsequent books in the St. Simons Trilogy. Everett’s “homemaker’s calendar” had a wealth of information for the American cook. Each month featured recipes–familiar favorites as well as regional dishes for those who were looking for new ideas. Southern recipes included Crab Soup Beaufort and Corn Bread Stuffing for Roast Chicken, while selections from the West included West

Coast Tuna Pie and Santa Clara Fruited Cream. Pennsylvania was represented by the recipe for “Snits and Knepp,” a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dish of ham and apple dumplings. The calendar also contained helpful information about canning pickles and jellies and running the home on a budget. This month’s images are the cover of the store’s 1946 calendar, donated by Camille Penders, and a detail from a postcard of the

Village, showing the grocery store where Roberta’s stands today. Since its founding in 1965, the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s archival collection has grown to over 15,000 historically important artifacts, documents and photographs.

Our monthly images on this page are from the vast archives of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. The Society’s mission includes the “administration, restoration and maintenance of historic facilities and resources … preserved as a living part of the historical and cultural foundations of our coastal community.” Society facilities include the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, and the Maritime Center (formerly the U.S. Coast Guard Station).
