The Gift of Praise

don’t think a day goes by that someone doesn’t come up to me and say something nice about Elegant Island Living. Getting positive feedback always gives us a feeling of pride and accomplishment. Ready or not, the holiday season is upon us. We know things are going to be different, but don’t sweat the small stuff – embrace it! From small gatherings to shopping small, we’re here to show how thinking small can have a big impact.

Small Ga therings

W

e’re in the home stretch of 2020. While this year has certainly presented its challenges, it has also helped us to adjust our focus. We have gained greater appreciation for the little things that we may have taken for granted before. Time with family and friends is now a more precious commodity. We may not be able to gather in large groups for holiday celebrations, but we can find ways to make the most of small gatherings. Use the good china for “date night” and Sunday family dinner. Dress the table up with candles, flowers, or homemade centerpieces.

Use dinner as an occasion to get members of your household together to interact beyond just eating a meal together. Let one family member plan the evening’s menu and take the lead in cooking (with kids getting help from the adults, of course). The other family members can act as sous chefs, helping with prep or making their assigned dish or course, as the head “chef ” for the evening decides. This is a fun way to experiment with new recipes or to pass on family traditions.

26

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING

When it comes to gatherings that include people from other households, we’re still being cautioned to take extra care to keep everyone safe and healthy. It’s recommended that even small gatherings right now take place outdoors. So, this might be the year to deep fry that turkey in the backyard! Other steps to take to minimize risk are to set up separate tables for each family household who will dine together and have plenty of socially distanced seating available. And, as opposed to single household only gatherings, with multihousehold guests, you’ll want to use disposable dinnerware, including

that we so enjoy at gatherings of families and friends, it’s recommended that for safety each household brings its own food and drinks, not to be shared. If meat is served straight from the grill or a freshly carved turkey, one person from each household should get the portions to serve at their table. Single serve condiments or pre-measured portions should be used and serving utensils should be wiped down after each use or only handled by one individual.

flatware, paper napkins, and paper towels. Keep alcohol-based hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes readily available. And while it’s the potluck style dishes

The following low risk activities are suggested for Thanksgiving: Having a small dinner with only people who live in your household. Preparing traditional family recipes for family and neighbors and delivering them in a way that doesn’t involve physical contact. Having a vir-

f you can’t be together for Thanksgiving with other family members or friends, you can certainly still share some face time via video calls. Another way to feel closer is to create a shared sensory experience. Curate a holiday playlist of music and make sure everyone listens to it that day. Have everyone make pumpkin bread from a shared recipe and eat it while you chat. Or, if you’re close, bake and drop off loaves to your loved ones. This recipe is a winner.

Easy Pumpkin Bread INGREDIENTS:

1 c. granulated sugar /2 c. light brown sugar

1

1-3/4 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda /4 tsp. salt

3

2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice /4 c. canned pumpkin puree

3

2 large eggs, beaten /2 c. vegetable or canola oil

1

/3 c. water

1

1 tsp. vanilla PREPARATION: Preheat oven to 350°, and spray a 9x5” loaf pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl, whisk together sugars, flour, baking soda, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. Make a hole in center of mixed ingredients and add all remaining ingredients: pumpkin, eggs, oil, water and vanilla. Stir together well, but don’t over-mix. Scrape batter into pan, and place in oven on center rack. Bake for 60 minutes, then test center of bread for doneness with a long toothpick. If toothpick comes out clean, the bread is done. If not, add another 5 minutes of baking time and test again. Make sure bread is fully done before you remove from oven or it will sink as it cools. Cool and enjoy! 28

he glow of lit candles, whether you choose scented or unscented, adds ambiance to any holiday table. If you’re feeling crafty and have a bit of time on your hands, add an extra special touch by

making your own candles for your centerpiece or as a host gift. You can even personalize them with a custom label or tag. Experiment and create your own family signature scent. Candles make nice Christmas presents too!

DIY Candles MATERIALS NEEDED:

About a dozen small glass jars. (5 oz. glass Oui yogurt jars work well) 5 lb. bag of soy wax (yields roughly 20 - 24 candles) Pre-made wicks (available in most craft stores) Box of non-toxic crayons to color the wax Essential oils for scent Wooden clothespins to hold wicks while wax sets. Glass measuring cup with handle (Use only for candle making, due to difficulty in cleaning for other use) 3-quart saucepan (Use only for candle making, due to difficulty in cleaning for other use) Candy thermometer that goes up to at least 200 degrees. DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare the jars. Center the wicks upright in the center of the jars using clothespins and then set them aside.

2. Pick out the color crayons you want to use (you can mix them) and cut small bits off of them to be used as coloring. A little bit goes a long way.

f Thanksgiving is a small family affair with only the people living with you, that means you don’t have to spend all day in the kitchen making ALL the side dishes. Plan to make just a few traditional favorites like the dressing, the sweet potato soufflé, and the green bean casserole. You can even make them the day before. With early prep and side dishes done, you can relax and enjoy with the ones you love once you throw the turkey in the oven. If watching a virtual parade or football doesn’t interest you, we suggest a viewing of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles for a chuckle or two. For pre-holiday feast snacking, prepare a cheese and charcuterie board. Load it up with an assortment of cheeses, cured meats, olives, nuts, dried fruit, crackers or bread, and any other tasty tidbits that strike your fancy. This allows for grazing with no extra dishes and limits trips to the refrigerator. If you don’t have the time, or the inclination, to make your own, contact Golden Isles Olive

Golden Isles Olive Oil can boost your game day or Thanksgiving spread with custom made snack trays and charcuterie boards. Call ahead to order and impress your guests.

Oil and Donna can let you know what she has prepared or can make a custom board to suit your taste. If you have a platter or board that you’d like to use for your gathering, bring it to her and she’ll fill it with what you want and can customize for any occasion. Donna also

serves a variety of boards at Golden Isles Olive Oil, so feel free to stop by and order one while you enjoy a glass of wine and some live music on the patio. They are now offering breakfast boards with waffles, fruit, and other brunch favorites on the weekends.

Game Day with the Small Fries

W

ith seating restricted at the stadium and tailgating opportunities limited for this year’s match-up between Georgia and Florida, many people will probably be staying home to watch the game. We know it will still be a party, but now it might mean incorporating kids into the mix. Here are some ideas to keep things fun for the small fries while the adults are hunkering down for the big Dawg game.

Aubrey and Riley Kennedy gear up for the big game.

Make a snack station just for the kids. It can be as easy as bowls or buckets with single-serve bags of chips, pretzels, mini cartons of goldfish, packs of crackers, cookies, and other individually wrapped treats. Fill another bucket or cooler with ice and small bottles of water, juice, sports drinks, or cans of soda. Have coloring pages and other activities readily available. Bingo is always popular if the kids are older and want to watch the game to find things listed on the squares of game cards you create (a Bulldog helmet, a missed field goal, a yellow flag, etc.). Pinterest has lots of printables if you need ideas or don’t want to make your own. Turn the page for some other game ideas.

BEFORE

During the pandemic,

home improvement projects seem to be booming. My backyard grass has been an issue for several years. I have re-sodded, soil tested, fertilized and even talked to the grass to no avail! I decided to do a permanent fix: a putting green and chipping area. I contacted my client and good friend Kenny Knox, a former PGA and Champions Tour player, and developer of Tour Greens putting turf. Kenny recommended Nate Clardy and his crew, Sea Pine Landscaping. They did an outstanding job. We now have a beautiful green low maintenance backyard to enjoy! – Ben Lee and Marie Feldman

This rustic wood table at Taylor House Interiors looks like it was made to host a seafood feast in a little cottage by the beach. Big on Flavor

S

eafood boils are a perfect example of small effort that yields great reward. A handful of simple ingredients are thrown into a big pot to cook and the result is a filling feast that’s always a favorite for coastal celebrations. Here in the Golden Isles, we use plenty of the sweet white Georgia shrimp pulled from these waters in our Low Country boil, along with smoked sausage, corn, and potatoes. Occasionally, crab is thrown into the mix. You’ll discover that it’s clams they boil in New England. Instead of the traditional

clambake where the mollusks are steamed over layers of seaweed, they throw the clams in a pot of water, a liberal pour of beer, the same basic ingredients we use here for our LCB, and plenty of Old Bay seasoning. Down the Chesapeake where the seasoning originated, it’s blue crabs that take center stage, and they’re usually steamed instead of boiled. In Maine, you’ll find lobster in the pot, while down in the Big Easy, it’s their smaller crawfish cousins boiled up with that spicy Cajun heat. The best seafood boils boast a combination of these ocean delicacies. You can find a few options on the menu at Spartina Grill in Darien.

cuisine’s tapas or Chinese dim sum, small plates are a way to showcase culinary creations that are innovative, beautifully presented, and made with high quality ingredients. The portions are similar to appetizer sizes and are often referred to as sharing plates. They’re ideal to nibble with drinks or to pass around a table and enjoy with friends. And the concept is quite popular

among diners. Small plate menus were ranked fourth in the top restaurant concepts category in the National Restaurant Association What’s Hot 2019 Culinary Forecast. The small plate trend allows diners to customize their dining experience by ordering based upon their level of hunger, their taste preferences, their desire to be adventurous, and any dietary limitations they might have. It also helps individuals who are trying to be health conscious or count calories to have smaller portions or mini versions of foods they love. If you’re hungry, you can always order a few plates to sample different flavors or simply have one as an appetizer before an entrée. Small plates can satisfy even the largest appetite. Make your next date a small plate sharing event. At Georgia Sea Grill, small plate dishes allow them to highlight their home-grown food sourcing from Potlikker Farm and Satilla Pond. GSG owner Zack Gowen decided the best way to assure that the freshest, healthiest seasonal flavors reach their diners’ tables was to grow their favorite ingredients here on their own sustainable farm. Potlikker Farm currently provides local produce for Executive Chef Tim Lensch to create GSG’s signature fresh flavors and they also sell seasonal offerings as a vendor at Halyard’s Farmer Fridays. Now with Satilla Pond, they’re combining the most modern aquaculture technology with Old World, sustainable farming traditions to provide locallygrown, organically-fed catfish to the Golden Isles. Whether it’s served or grown by GSG, you can rely on the same attention to detail and freshness that has made them a longstanding Golden Isles favorite. This same quality extends to their 3 Little Birds Catering endeavors, so for a truly memorable experience, work with Zack and Chef Tim on a small plates menu tailored to your own intimate gathering in the unparalleled setting of Village Creek Landing.

Shop Small

he best way you can act “small” and make a big impact is by shopping small. The phrase “shop small” is most often associated with Small Business Saturday, an annual shopping occasion birthed by American Express that takes place between Black Friday and Cyber Monday on the calendar and encourages

shoppers to support their local shops instead of big box stores and online retail giants. This national holiday, which was first celebrated in 2010, calls to attention the importance of shopping at the small businesses that serve as the backbone of the American economy and our local communities. The campaign has helped many shoppers to understand how

valuable they are to mom and pop stores, local makers and other small business. Basically, it’s a big deal for small businesses. And when our small businesses do well, our communities do too. This year, Small Business Saturday falls on November 28, and local businesses need our support now more than ever. In fact, 62% of U.S. small businesses reported that they need to see consumer spending return to

pre-coronavirus levels by the end of 2020 in order to stay in business, according to the Small Business Recovery Research conducted by American Express. We encourage you to not only shop small on that day, but throughout the entire holiday season. In fact, we sincerely hope that it’s a part of your daily life in the Golden Isles, because we have so many wonderful small businesses here. These businesses are the livelihood and life blood of our friends and neighbors.

They are champs at coming through for our community by doing things like donating to our fundraisers and sponsoring our kids’ teams, and now we have a concrete way to support them in return. It’s time for us to show our appreciation to the retailers and restaurants who have taken extra steps and gone above and beyond to accommodate safe shopping and dining by implementing curbside service, delivery, personal and virtual shopping experiences.

roceeds from the December 5 CASA Jingle All the Way 5K & 1 Mile Run benefit CASA Glynn (also serving Camden County) and the network of CASA volunteers who support Southeast Georgia children in foster care. CASA volunteers advocate for abused and neglected children who are in foster care because they are unable to live safely at home. They make sure the children move quickly through the system and are placed in a safe, permanent home. For many children, CASA volunteers may be the only constant adult presence they have during this process. Participating in the Jingle All the Way Run is a way to support CASA’s work and allow them to help others have a happy holiday. Further details about the event are available at casaglynn.org.

The 40th Annual Christmas Tour of HofwylBroadfield Plantation will be Saturday, December 5 from 10:00 a.m. to,4:00 p.m. This magical experience will demonstrate how Christmas

Santa and his island elves, members of the St. Simons Island Civinettes and the Glynn County Volunteer Fire Department, are making preparations for his highly-anticipated

Christmas Eve journey around St. Simons Island on the antique red fire truck Engine 32. This beloved island tradition has continued for more than 70 years, with adults and children alike flocking to catch a glimpse of Santa on his lighted truck, along with his entourage of Mrs. Claus and merry helpers. Santa will not be able to personally visit with children this year, but be sure to come out with your loved ones to wave as he passes by and spreads holiday cheer. The EIL elves will be posting information via our social media accounts, Facebook and Instagram, about Santa’s route and estimated times of travel on Christmas Eve, so don’t forget to follow us.

Jekyll Island’s magical holiday transformation into Holly Jolly Jekyll begins Friday, November 27 and ends on Sunday, January 3.

- H O L LY J O L LY J E K Y L L -

A

ll events and activities have been reimagined this year to ensure the health and well-being of visitors, to incorporate appropriate social distancing and safety protocols so families can still enjoy the spirit of the season. Full details for all events can be found at jekyllisland.com/holiday. A good way to begin is by taking in the merry sight of over half a million lights and some of the island’s best holiday displays from the comfort of your own vehicle by following the self-guided light tour map. Please follow traffic patterns and signs, remain in your vehicles while grabbing photographs of your favorite twinkling lights for your safety. If you’d rather sit back and relax on Jekyll’s jolliest trolley, hop on board a Holly Jolly Light Tour and view the lights from Beach Village to the Historic District on select nights. Trolley riders will enjoy festive holiday beverages, music and a one-of-a-kind tour souvenir. Don’t miss the holiday decorations at Jekyll Island Mini Golf ’s Peppermint

Land! You can play one or both of the 18-hole courses while surrounded by giant gum drops, peppermint sticks, gingerbread men and more. It will be open in the evenings, so you can play into the night under all of the lights! As always, free community events are the highlight of the season. On December 5, watch as Santa and friends make their way around the island in a variety of vehicles dressed in their holiday-best in the Holly Jolly Jekyll Parade! View the parade from special island-wide spectator viewing spots or sign-up to join in the fun. Participant prizes will be awarded in various categories by Santa’s helpers! Bring the family out to watch the night sky light up with free fireworks shows in celebration of the season on December 6 & 20. Kids can sit in the driver’s seat and explore several emergency vehicles (sirens will be silenced) and chat with emergency personnel from Jekyll Island Fire/EMS and Georgia State Patrol at the Holiday Big Truck Roundup on

December 12. Santa will make an appearance too! Then the big guy in the red suit will be taking a fire engine ride around Beach Village with his friends later that evening (December 12) and again on December 19, before free Drive-In Movie screenings of the original Rankin/Bass version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Restaurants will offer take-out dinner specials and you can pick up a free holiday mask souvenir with purchase at the retail shops. Then, park your vehicle and tune in to Jekyll’s private radio channel to watch this movie classic on the big screen. There are several other opportunities for families to bring their letters and wish lists and enjoy some time with Jolly Ol’ St. Nick at the Jekyll Island Convention Center. On November 28, December 12, 19 & 23, you can enjoy Breakfast with Santa, with a family-friendly breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon, plus hot chocolate with marshmallows from the hot chocolate bar (an elf favorite)! On November 29, December 6 & 20, there’s Cookie Decorating with Santa, where kids can express their creativity on cookies (each family receives 6) with all the icing and candies needed to make holiday magic. See the Jekyll Island website for details and reservations.

opping into Planters Exchange to see what’s new and exciting has been a St. Simons and Sea Island must-do for years. The shop first opened on Frederica Road in a cozy space next to Anderson Fine Art Gallery, shaded by a massive live oak and a distinct black awning. The shop was an extension of the personalities of owners Anne Whittle and Adgate Cole: curious, tasteful, and witty. The small store, filled with garden accents, home décor, casual fine jewelry, brightly colored oversized silk scarves, and unique gifts, and was a hit from the start. Customers quickly became regulars and always knew they’d find something distinctive. Over time, Planters Exchange grew, and with that, Anne and Adgate realized an opportunity to move to a larger storefront in Redfern Village. The additional space allowed (continues)

Their clientele enthusiastically followed them there, and along with the store, the number of customers grew as well. In fact, when Anne began to think about retiring, the store’s strong following was a key element in the decision by new owners, Robert and Delaine Haulbrook, to take up the store’s mantle, pledging to continue its reputation while adapting it to their own comparable style. Over the years, the Haulbrooks have enjoyed traveling to and living in wide-flung areas around the globe, wherever Robert’s career in the telecommunications industry took them. Delaine grew up north of St. Simons Island and her family had often vacationed here, so it was a goal of theirs to eventually retire on the island. After a number of international moves, and with their daughter Ansley reaching school age, they decided to make St. Simons their home in the U.S. Fast forward 15 years, and Robert began casting around for interesting businesses that he could tend to and grow. As it so often happens

here, Planters Exchange and Anne’s thoughts on retiring came up in casual conversations. Talks grew between the Haulbrooks and Anne, and her strong following with locals, part-time residents, and tourists, along with her clear direction of Planters Exchange, was a determining factor in Robert’s brave decision to enter the world of women’s fashion. As his interest in purchasing the store grew, he kept hearing women comment that Planters Exchange was their favorite store. Many further confided in him that not only was it their favorite store on the island, it was their favorite store on the entire East Coast! As any new owner might, Robert wanted to broaden the merchandise mix to appeal to and attract a wider audience. Fashion was relaxing into more deconstructed and casual profiles, but his customers were invested in looking well put together, and it was essential for them to continue to look stylishly relevant. They sought clothing that was classic but with a twist, designed using beautiful fabrics, texture and thoughtful details, which they found at Planters Exchange.

He also realized early on that an important part of the store’s success was due to the respect and trust in the women who worked there, all of whom stayed through the acquisition and eventual move to the current new location. Their advice on market buying trips and vision of the anticipated changes to the (continues)

store were invaluable in steering every detail through the transition period. Together with Robert, they worked as a team to add new apparel lines and sought an opportunity to expand with a larger store format with an entirely new look. Early this year, that opportunity presented itself, and Planters Exchange relocated to where NANCY had been on Market Street, giving Robert the space to open a men’s clothing department. Again, Robert and his staff listened carefully to customers’ suggestions for the new men’s collection, and were surprised that of the first three men asked, all requested a good selection of sport coats and a made-tomeasure service for coats, suits and tuxedos. As the demand for dress clothes reached a large enough level to support the new store, Robert reached out to Mark Landis, who’d previously owned a well-respected local men’s clothing store, and now currently represents the Coppley apparel line, which is available at Planters Exchange. Coppley offers as many as 400 fabric options, and with Landis’ expert custom fittings and advice, the result is an impeccably tailored garment that reflects current fashion, individual taste, and personal needs. The men’s collection offers a wide range of dress shirts, ties, belts and shoes with the majority of the clothing being more casual, selected for the

finer resort lifestyle. It also includes shirts, pants and shorts for both golf and fishing. Planters Exchange’s brands offer rapid replenishment, allowing the store access to a brand’s entire range of available colors, fabrics and sizes. This depth of inventory accessibility for the store helps resolve the frustrations of shopping online where a purchaser can’t touch the fabric or know if it fits correctly. For example, with men’s pants, a customer has 16 options from which to choose. Once the style and fit are selected, there are 100 different fabric and color options available, all of which combine for a true custom pant that can be delivered within a few days. Future plans include custom made-to-measure shirts for both men and women. This service will ensure Planters Exchange’s customers have not only a perfect fit and style, but combined with the fabric selections, allows them to have truly individualized fashion that they had a part in creating for themselves. These changes in retailing were quickly adopted by Planters Exchange and have created a vibrant shopping experience for their customers. Their expanded apparel selections for women, and

now for men, are more closely matched to what their customers are currently wearing and want for their wardrobes. For this year and beyond, this means a more casual and comfortable, yet still sleek and stylish, selection of apparel. The store is also benefiting from a change in how people shop. After months of mindless online shopping from often anonymous sites, or dashing in and out of large national chains, people are seeking a small boutique experience with professional, personalized levels of service offering suggestions, insights and assessments of what it takes to create an individualized fashion statement for their customers. Much like how Planters Exchange began almost 20 years ago, it’s still a favorite destination that continues to offer shopping inspiration that’s sought by the discerning buyer. Discover beautiful clothes perfect for the resort lifestyle for both women and men at Planters Exchange’s new location at 26 Market Street. Open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 912.638.9888. You can also shop online at PlantersExchange.com and follow them on Facebook at Planters Exchange and Instagram @plantersexchange.

How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways.

W

hen tasked with presenting my debut column for the magazine, I considered many topics that I hope to share in future months. But for today, I felt a need to establish my kinship with you. I am a proud American, born Southern by the Grace of God; yet despite having visited the Golden Isles for well over forty years now, I realize that I am still a relative newcomer. When I consider all that is St. Simons Island, I realize that there is much to love, so I set about listing here some top reasons with which you may identify:

Top Five Reasons I Love This Place 5. Horseshoe crabs. And alligators. And us. The horseshoe crab is a direct throwback to the time when living creatures first appeared on this planet. Mostly unchanged changed in 300 million years, they are not crabs at all, but closely related to spiders. About 150 million years ago, alligators appeared, looking like Jurassic flotillas. Homo Sapiens arrived a mere 200,000 or so years back. Seeing all of these species here today sort of puts things into proper perspective when I consider my relative importance in the grand scheme of things.

by John Adams

4. Hurricanes (and the weather in general). The weather pattern on St. Simons Island is as much controlled by the winds from Tallahassee as it is by the ocean breezes. Simply ideal much of the year, it provides a pleasant contrast to the asphalt jungle of metro Atlanta and calms the soul. I especially love the threat of the hurricane, when the Almighty clears his throat, and we all run for cover. More often than not, the storm turns slightly and heads straight for Nags Head. 3. Nice people. When all is said and done, we remember the people who enter our lives, and this island is chock full of really nice people. Many are retired military with an ingrained sense of right and wrong. Many are from other parts of the U.S., bringing an almost cosmopolitan flair to the mix. And perhaps, most importantly, many are members of The Greatest Generation, those born after WWI and before WWII. It’s been said that the hardships of life form our true character. Making the acquaintance of those who endured such hardships are another reason it’s a pleasure to visit the island. 2. The F. J. Torras Causeway One might think it strange that I’m including a paved road in the top reasons I love my adopt-

ed home. But every time I drive the roadway that connects US 17 to Kings Way, I am always reminded of lyrics from the Drifters classic hit, “Up On The Roof.” When I get to the first of the three bridges, anticipation kicks in and, literally, “all my cares just drift right into space.” I don’t know who wrote the words to that song, but they must have visited St. Simons. And finally … The main reason I think everyone wants to be on our beloved island is the fact that it is conveniently parked in the Atlantic Ocean, where solid land and sandy beach give way to the strange and wonderful saltwater world of dolphins and myriad creatures that navigate beneath its waves. Not unlike the horseshoe crab, our brains are hard-wired to be attracted to the primordial soup from which we emerged relatively few years ago. In future columns, I hope to explore a variety of other interesting topics. For today, it’s enough that I say “I love St. Simons Island.”

he most wonderful time of the year is almost here, which means holiday traditions and family gatherings are right around the corner too. As you get ready to plan your party, make sure you include insurance on your guest list. I think we can all agree that one of the most exciting things about the holidays is having your family and friends all under the same roof. But you’ll want to make sure you understand your insurance policy should the unexpected happen. What happens if Grandpa slips and falls or cousin Johnny throws a baseball through the window? At Morris & Templeton Insurance, we strive to give you peace of mind to enjoy your company to the fullest during the holidays. There are a few different scenarios to consider: What happens if a guest damages your valuables? Or if they cause harm to your home itself? What are you responsible for if an accident happens and a guest gets injured? Let’s start with the last situation. If something goes wrong at your party and a guest gets hurt on your property, it’s important to have liability coverage, because you are held liable for their injuries. In most cases, your insurance will help cover acci-

dents resulting from alcohol, a guest slipping or falling on your property, or someone getting sick from the food served. The more people you have in your home, the more potential liability. However, if a guest damages your property then they, not you, are held liable to fix the damage. Hopefully your guest will realize they are at fault and offer to cover the damages without making things unpleasant. But, worst case scenario, your homeowners insurance policy may cover things such as fire or smoke damage, vandalism, theft of items in your home, and broken windows. Creating a home inventory before entertaining a house full of guests is a good idea. It’s also important to remember that not all items in your home are covered, as many may be more valuable than what’s covered under your policy. That’s where a personal articles policy comes in and can help make sure you’re fully protected. But each policy is different, so make sure you review

the details of yours before hosting. Some policies only cover the house or structure, and not the items inside your home. Now the most important question arises: When do I use my policy? The best thing to do is call your agent before filing a claim. The answer can be complicated. If you use your homeowners’ policy to cover small damages, you may end up costing yourself in the long run. Your premiums can be affected

by the claims you file, which means activating your policy to cover damage caused by a guest could impact your future rates. Before the holiday rush begins, make sure to call Morris & Templeton Insurance. They’ll make sure you’re the holiday “hostess with the mostest!”

Stronger Together

O

n August 31, 2020, as a result of two years of work and discussions between two organizations committed to nonprofit hospice care, Hospice of the Golden Isles (HGI) became the first affiliate and one of the founding members of Alivia Care of Georgia. The Reverend Tom Purdy, President of the Board of Directors said, “Under the Alivia Care of Georgia umbrella, high-quality community-based not-for-profit hospice agencies throughout the state will be ‘Stronger Together, Stronger Than Ever.’” HGI will continue to operate and offer services to its local community as before, including operating its hospice houses on Glynco Parkway, but will also have the additional support of Alivia Care of Georgia and its resources. Susan Ponder-Stansel, a leader and advocate for nonprofit hospice care for over 35 years, and President and CEO of Alivia Care, Inc., heads Alivia Care of Georgia. “When I became involved in hospice in 1985, there were only a handful of for-profit hospices in the U.S. Now,

over 76% of hospices are for-profit and see hospice as solely a business opportunity instead of a mission-driven service committed to serving the community. The business practices of these for-profit hospices pose a real and substantial threat to nonprofit hospices that serve all who need care, including patients whose care is costly or who have no insurance. We founded Alivia Care of Georgia to create an organization where high-quality nonprofit hospices could join forces to share resources and work together to be able to compete with their forprofit counterparts.” Purdy joined Alivia Care of Georgia as one of the founding members of their Board of Directors. As a longstanding board member and current President of the HGI Board of Directors, his experience no doubt be beneficial to them. “Locally-focused communitybased hospices make a substantial contribution to the quality of life for the communities they serve,” says Ponder-Stansel. “Preserving and strengthening organizations driven by a common mission and commitment is the most important work we can do now. We look forward to developing our network of likeminded providers with the support of our first affiliate, Hospice of the Golden Isles.”

Stronger together means supporting, not changing, the mission of a successful quality-driven community treasure. The mission of HGI, your hometown hospice since 1980, remains to provide ‘The Best Care When It Matters Most,’ regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. For the last nine years, HGI has earned the Hospice Honors national designation and received premier designation status as “Elite” for four of those nine years, placing them in the top 2% of hospices nationwide for their commitment to quality. “I have always been proud to work with HGI, never more so than now. Our mission and our quality of care set us apart,” says Purdy. We really do offer an elite level of care for our patients and families when compared with our peers across the nation. We are so pleased to have found a partner in Alivia Care of Georgia who shares our commitment to the original hospice care mission that does not put profits ahead of patients. We’re also pleased that we are not only helping ourselves through this affiliation, but helping form a network that will benefit other Georgia nonprofit hospices as well.” For more information about HGI, call 912.265.4735 or visit Hospice.me.

HELP BUILD RUTH’S HOME Faithful Love, a faith-based nonprofit organization founded in 2017 to support adult survivors of sex trafficking in Glynn and surrounding counties, is responding to the need for a crisis residential safe home and beginning its property search. Ruth’s Home will be the only 30-day crisis residential safe home for adult sex trafficking survivors in the region. The fundamental goal of Ruth’s Home is to help place women in a long-term program specifically geared towards trauma-informed care and recovery. During the 30-day stay at Ruth’s Home, the women will have a safe environment where they can heal, reflect, and receive counseling before moving on to a long-term and transitional living program. Faithful Love is partnering with anti-sex trafficking ministries Out of Darkness and House of Cherith in Atlanta for the long-term steps. Donations are sought from the community to fund Ruth’s House and help end human trafficking. faithfullove.net

At

home with

Larry DeLaney Your home is more than a building or an address. It’s where you experience life, connection, and growth. That is why our agents find what they do so rewarding! Each month we are going to take you into the home of one of our agents. See what they love and value most about their homes and where they live. I live in The Point, a small neighborhood tucked behind St. Clair bordering Dunbar Creek. My wife Sandra and our four children, Matt, Wesley, Andrew and Bennett have lived in three different riverfront homes on the same street for over 17 years. We love living here! With all four of our college aged kids living and studying from home these past few months due to COVID it can get a little cozy. Having a boat really helped during social distancing. Designer Lori Cook has helped to keep us functional and comfortable while at home. Most of our fabrics are durable coastal sailcloth that blends well with our lifestyle. Throughout our home we have artwork displayed by local artist, Dan Goad. The art features wildlife and coastal influences that we truly treasure. Our family loves to cruise the waterways, fishing or our favorite, shark tooth hunting on Ballast Beach. At the end of each day, someone will yell, “SUNSET”. It is a special time for all of us to reflect and give thanks for all of Gods gifts and enjoy this special place we call home. Then it's time to eat! Our favorite is a traditional low country boil with fresh McIntosh shrimp. The kids have been busy this year catching all different kinds of fish but the fresh fried trout and flounder are moms' favorite. This is best served on our deck family style on my new table built by the kids! My favorite place at home is the dock. At the end of the day I can walk out and really relax. Love where you live has never been so true these last few months. Enjoying family time together has been a blessing and one I think the kids have really enjoyed. My hope is that all my clients and friends can only love where they are as much as my family does. We are so thankful to live in The Golden Isles with great people and so many things to do right outside our back door. Helping others find their perfect home so they can create and enjoy lasting memories is why I find what I do so rewarding. Welcome Home! Forgotten History of WWI: Brunswick’s Concrete Ship SS Atlantus

E

ach year on November 11, we commemorate the armistice signed in 1918 that ended World War I. The global conflict began in Europe in 1914, but the United States did not enter the war until April 6, 1917. Once President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany and its allies, he pushed to mobilize American industry. A major concern was the unrestricted German submarine warfare that was destroying merchant shipping essential to national defense. New ships were needed quickly, and the shipyards of Brunswick became part of the initiative to build them. Since steel was needed for military use, the United States

turned to reinforced concrete as an alternative hull material. On March 18, 1918, the North Carolina newspaper The Wilmington Dispatch announced that a shipbuilding company headquartered in Wilmington had begun building at “its new plant in Brunswick, Ga.” the first of ten 3,000-ton concrete merchant ships for the Emergency Fleet Corporation, created by the U.S. government. The article further stated that the estimated cost per ship was $375,000. In September 1918, there was more news about local industry when the American Shipbuilding Company of Brunswick was awarded a contract to install

all machinery and equipment in the concrete ship, which was nearing completion. This meant employment for mechanics, machinists, pipefitters, and other skilled workers, as noted in the company’s newsletter American Shipbuilding Co. News, dated September 26, 1918, and preserved in the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives. Two months later, however, the war ended, and this shipbuilding program was brought to an abrupt halt. Sources indicate that nationally only twelve concrete ships were completed. The one built in Brunswick, SS Atlantus, was was one of the most famous. Launched in December 1918, a month after

the war ended, the ship was used to transport troops home from Europe. Atlantus was then used for coastal trading until she was retired from service in 1920. In 1926, a Baltimore entrepreneur acquired the 250-foot ship and towed her to Cape May Point, New Jersey, to be part of a concrete wharf for a ferry service. Before the project was completed, however, a nor’easter tore the ship from its moorings, and it ran aground. A remnant of the wreck can still be seen off the Jersey shoreline at nearby Sunset Beach. This month’s image of SS Atlantus shortly after she ran aground is courtesy of the website concreteships.org.
