PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Make a List
N
ormally I use this space to write about the mundane experiences I have, but the other day I read a very interesting article and thought it might be useful to EIL readers. It was about something called “the 25/5 Rule.” Here’s the story behind the rule and how it can benefit you. According to the story, Mike Flint was Warren Buffett’s personal airplane pilot for a decade. Once, when Flint was discussing career priorities with his boss, Buffett walked him through a simple exercise. First, Buffett told Flint to make a list of his top 25 career goals. Then he directed Flint to circle the top five goals. At that point, Buffett advised Flint to remain focused on accomplishing goals 1 through 5 and to stay completely away from working on goals 6 through 25. What’s the lesson? It’s all about focus.

Let’s be realistic. You’re probably not going to accomplish 25 BIG things in your life. If you really focus long-term, you can reach three to five BIG goals, maybe. And the cause of your lack of focus is numbers 6 through 25. Those are other things you’re interested in, and are your biggest potential distractions. It’s easy to come up with five things you really want to do. But it’s even easier to get distracted from actually making progress on those 5 goals because you get caught up in the excitement, joy, or temporary pleasure of things that simply aren’t as important.
In the story, Buffett was advising on how to reach your biggest career or life goals. But you can also use this rule to help you with your daily, weekly, or monthly priorities. For example, every morning, you might make a list of 5 to 10 things you’d really like to accomplish for the day. Then, circle only the top task. Don’t work on any of the other tasks until you’ve knocked out the top priority. Do the same thing for the week. Identify 10 things you’d like to get done, but circle only the top two. Make those top tasks your ultimate priority, and don’t let the others get in the way. I just made my list for the week. I wrote down 10 things I want to accomplish this week. Out of my list of 10, unfortunately, I had to circle the 10th on my list rather than the 1st. Number 10 on my list was doing laundry. Well, I can’t do ANYTHING without clean underwear!

BUBBL WITH BENEFITS

t’s time to pop the cork! Taste of the Vine will be a sparkling affair this year. On Sunday, October 27, you’ll want to don your spiffiest cocktail attire and come out to The Boathouse at Frederica Golf Club on St. Simons Island to join this splendid celebration that benefits Coastal Coalition for Children. This annual event will take place from 6:00-8:30 p.m. so you can enjoy watching the sun set over the lake. There will be wine tasting and heavy hors d’oeuvres to please the palate. Local trio “3 of Us” will provide live music to add to the festive atmosphere. There will also be a silent auction with local, national, and international prizes, and a
50/50 raffle. New this year will be a live auction of some premium experiences and items you won’t want to miss! While last year’s event sold out and the venue changed to the Clubhouse to accommodate a larger crowd, this year, ticket sales are strictly limited and the event will not move from The Boathouse. That means you should be sure to get your tickets early to ensure you have seats and are part of the fun! Event Co-Chairs Michael Kaufman and Ken Jacobsen invite you to become a top sponsor to enjoy an exclusive special treat: a dockside tasting event featuring sparkling wines from the Schramsberg
vineyards followed by a cruise around the lake on one of Frederica’s beautiful vintage boats. The always charming Ryan McLoughlin, head sommelier at Sea Island, will be curating and leading the tasting. This would be a wonderful way for a local business to entertain top clients or reward valued employees. The tasting and cruise is offered exclusively to top sponsors (Chardonnay Level and above). Don’t despair if you aren’t a sponsor, however, Schramsberg will be providing all the wine for the main event and you’ll have plenty to taste! Schramsberg has quite an impressive history and reputation for wine-making. German immigrant Jacob Schram first made his home and started a winery on Diamond Mountain in the 19th century. Over one hundred years later, in 1965, Jack and Jamie Davies discovered the run-down winery on the mountainside above St. Helena. By all accounts, after being abandoned for years, the 19th century Victorian mansion presided over the tangled (continues)

remains of once stately gardens and underground cellars. The Davies welcomed a challenge and decided to bring Schramsberg back to life. They also set a lofty goal: to produce “America’s most prestigious, select and admired sparkling wine; chosen for special guests, special gifts, pampering one’s self and expressing one’s taste in unique products.” Through the decades, this spirit of innovation earned Schramsberg and the Davies worldwide praise and recognition. Schramsberg’s sparkling wines have been served at official State functions by every U.S. Presidential administration since Nixon. Schramsberg sparkling wines are produced from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes grown in a broad array of cool-climate North Coast vineyards located in Napa, Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin counties. The winemakers draw from more than 66 specific vineyard sites to create over 250 base wines annually. These wines are then artfully blended to create Schramsberg’s 12-14 distinctive sparkling wines each year. Preserving century-old traditions, most of Schramsberg’s viticultural and winemaking practices are carried out by hand: grapes are hand harvested, the wines are handcrafted, the
bottles are stacked and riddled by hand in their underground caves. The J. Schram, Schramsberg’s top Chardonnay offering, is even hand labeled. Unique among California sparkling wine houses, Schramsberg Vineyards ferments 25% of its juice in oak barrels to produce a richer, more luscious style. Schramsberg has also developed a library of reserve base wines that are barrel aged for up to 10 years. These wines provide additional refinement and complexity to the finished products. Schramsberg’s sparklers are made using méthode traditionelle, the labor-intensive and costly process whereby wine undergoes a secondary fermentation inside the bottle, creating bubbles. This occurs after a base wine is made using steel tanks or oak barrels to perform a primary fermentation. All Champagne—a term reserved for sparkling wines produced in the Champagne region of France—and most high-quality sparkling wines is made using méthode traditionelle. While you sip the bubbles and clink glasses with friends, it’s also important to remember the purpose of the party: supporting the programs of Coastal Coalition for Children, a local 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the well-being of babies and children in our community. By teaching parents and custodial grandparents better parenting skills, their mission is to “create safe and nurturing homes” for the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community. Keeping chil-
dren with their biological families and out of the foster care system is one of Coastal Coalition for Children’s primary goals and achievements. The Healthy Families home visitation program strives to provide a foundation for life-long healthy development by focusing on mother-child bonding, positive parenting, children’s social, emotional, and physical development, school readiness, and family self-sufficiency. The Grandparent Connection program supports grandparents who are raising their grandchildren and those children in their care. Coastal Coalition for Children support includes teaching “Parenting the Second Time Around” classes, providing summer day camp, tutoring, and therapy, as well as helping grandparents navigate procedural issues like establishing legal kinship. Coastal Coalition for Children currently has 25 employees and has expanded services to operate Healthy Families in Glynn, McIntosh, Brantley, Chatham and Liberty and the Grandparent Connection in Glynn and McIntosh. Please join Coastal Coalition for Children at what promises to be an evening to remember at The Boathouse at Frederica by becoming a sponsor (Who wouldn’t like a boat ride with bubbly?!) or purchasing tickets to the event. Tickets for the event are $125 per person. For more information about sponsorships, or to purchase tickets, please visit cc4children.org. Sip, sparkle, support! (continues)

The festivities will begin with live music by popular local band Suzy and the Bird Dogs. As you enter, you’ll be welcomed with the offer of a signature bourbon cocktail. Delicious local food will be provided by Marshside Grill, Porch, and The Crab Trap. If you have not had the pleasure of dining at these establishments prior to the Blue Jean Ball, you will be pleasantly surprised. Better yet, dine at these locations and thank them for joining the Blue Jean Ball. There will also be an open bar where you can gather with your friends and family and enjoy a refreshing beverage. Southern Eagle will have their own bar set up serving premium beer. As you make your way through the barn, you will see a variety of high-quality and exciting silent auction items. Some of this year’s items include excursions, jewelry by S. Carter Designs, a designer handbag from Sorella, and original artwork by Sally King Benedict. If a silent auction is too tame for you, there will be an entertaining live auction as well with auctioneer John Rothermel. One live auction item will be a custom piece of art created for the Humane Society by world-renowned artist Steve Penley. Penley has created projects for Fox News, Coca-Cola, and several U.S. Presidents. He has graciously provided HSSCG with an original work for the auction every year. Another sneak peek into the live auction reveals one-of-a-kind excursions including a scenic ski trip in the beautiful mountains of Telluride, Colorado with four nights lodging for two at the Inn at Lost Creek. While there, you can enjoy complimentary lift tickets or golfing if you prefer a more relaxing activity. For the equine enthusiasts and bourbon connoisseurs, offered up for bid will be a weekend package to Kentucky, the horse capital of the world. Enjoy a visit to the members-only exclusive Keeneland Club in Lexington and a private tour of Castle and Key Distillery. All Blue Jean Ball auction items have been generously donated by supporters of the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia. Heartfelt thanks to all of them. emcee Keenan Carter. If you have a competitive spirit, you'll want to purchase a glowing necklace when you arrive. Everyone with game necklaces will be asked to play. Participants will select either “heads” or “tails” by putting their hands on their head or their tail! The auctioneer flips a coin. Those participants whose choice matches the coin flip will get to continue playing; everyone else will lose a necklace. The game will continue until the last person is standing. This is always a spirited part of our evening. The Junior Board will have the necklaces for sale at check-in and all throughout the venue so you can join the excitement. As the evening moves along, put your dancing boots on and get ready to boogie the night away. DJ Weav (Dr. John Weaver) will spin the tunes as a perfect way to round out this sensational celebration. And if you’re having so much fun that you can’t remember all the details, no worries! Memories will be
captured by local photographers from The Darkroom on St. Simons Island. Proceeds from the Blue Jean Ball benefit the animals of the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, helping them to provide care, love, and medical attention to over a thousand animals a year. Animals like Georgia, a twoyear-old hound mix, brought to HSSCG in January of this year by a concerned citizen who was kind enough to pick her up. This precious girl had been abandoned, tied to a tree in the woods with her seven 6-week-old puppies. Georgia was emaciated and in very poor health. She suffered from malnutrition and the worst skin infection the medical department had ever seen. Although the puppies were quickly adopted, Georgia had multiple ongoing health issues. A news station in Jacksonville picked up her story and generated a lot of interest. One hound-loving family who read Georgia’s story decided she would be the perfect addition. After 5 months of intensive
medical care, she was able to be adopted. They drove hours to make her part of their family. Georgia and her two-legged pack are currently residing in the Sunshine State. HSSCG wants to continue making happy tales like Georgia’s possible. They are only able to do so with your support. The Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia is not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States; nor do they receive any governmental assistance. They are 100% funded by the kindness of this very special community and appreciate the support of Glynn County and other generous donors and volunteers. The Blue Jean Ball is the perfect opportunity for you to have a wonderful time with friends while helping animals in need. To purchase tickets to the Blue Jean Ball and get more details, visit hsscg.org/blue-jean-ball. If you can’t make it to our event and would like to donate, please visit hsscg.org/donate. (continues)

We are tired of what cancer takes from us. But we are so very hopeful for a future that sees effective medications that saves lives of those in our midst whom we cherish. To combat this deadly foe, for an incredible half century Glynn County women have been gathering annually to present a special event that benefits of the Glynn County Unit of the American Cancer Society. The first event was a luncheon/fashion show held at the Frederica Yacht Club with Mrs. James Gilbert, Sr. serving as chairwoman. What began as “Harriet’s

During the past five decades, thousands of women in our community have worked tirelessly as volunteers to raise upwards of $2 million for the American Cancer Society. From 1986 to 1994, our Victory Gala won the coveted President’s Diamond Award for best ACS event in the state. Because of this success, in 1992, the Glynn County ACS Unit sponsored a trip for a group of past chairwomen to Dallas, home of the prestigious Cattle Baron’s Ball. Nancy Wood and Jane Segerberg observed the Dallas organization at work and, using that group as inspiration, the past chairwomen of the Victory Gala came together to form the Glynn County’s Victory Board in 1994. There were 26 founding members and some continue to serve on the Board today. The group’s stated purpose remains: “to further the general goals of the American Cancer 30

wonderful group of women who selflessly support The American Cancer Society.” Tradition is an integral part of Victory. Members must serve a minimum of three years on the board and co-chair the special event within this time. The beginnings of life-long friendships are cultivated here. “Gala Girls” are often found on the volunteer lists of many other local charities. These women are leaders in their community and willingly give their time to this worthy cause. Spouses and children are also considered a part of the Victory family for sharing their wife or mom with the group. As one former chairwoman said, “In today’s fast-paced, high-tech world, we are hometown family.” Many past chairwomen continue to serve today. Those with over 30 years of continuous service include Mary Bishop, Louise Champion-Bledsoe, Sandra Brunson, Anne Futch, Claudia Malone, and Nancy Wood. Those with over 20 years are Dawn Hart, Rebecca Lott, Elizabeth Pipe, Jane Segerberg, Leslie Sutton, Ann Tuten, Ann Whelchel, and Ellen Woodside. Victory membership includes the second generation of several local families: Bishop, Brunson, and Champion, among others. Alexa Scott chaired Victory Gala in 2016, raising $179,387, and currently serves as Victory Board President. When asked why she participates, she answers, “I love having the opportunity to work with women throughout the community to help raise funds to find a cure to this terrible disease that has directly affected all of us.” This year’s Victory Board hopes to raise $45,000 in proceeds from the 50th Anniversary Golden Gala, so that they can provide 50% of those funds to address the transportation needs of patients being treated for cancer; and the remainder to fulfill the remaining services provided at the Southeast Georgia Health System’s Cancer Research Center. Last year in Glynn County, there were 760 patients that were eligible for treatment and cancer care services. 71% of requests received in Glynn County were for transportation. Services have 32

included providing or finding transportation not only within Glynn County, but all over the Southeast. This also included lodging at either HOPE Lodge or extended stay lodging. Even though these patients aren’t in Glynn County receiving treatment, they have traveled from Glynn County to other areas where their specific cancer was treated. A significant need is transportation and lodging for pediatric patients who are mainly seen in Jacksonville and Atlanta, because Glynn County does not have the resources to care for pediatric patients. Transportation is provided in several ways: volunteers driving locally, medical transports such as hospital vans, buses, etc. This can be from a patient’s home to their doctor’s office, chemo treatment or other medical services. It also includes out of town transportation. It is a vital service to deliver logistical support in addition to emotional support to local cancer patients. By providing transportation and lodging, we can help eliminate the financial barrier that prevents many patients from receiving adequate treatment. In honor of 50 years of local women’s hard work to raise money for cancer research and cancer patient outreach, the Victory Board will hold a Golden Gala on October 26th at Sea island’s Retreat Clubhouse and your attendance is requested. Cocktails and silent auction will start the evening at six o’clock, followed by an intimate seated dinner and a live auction, followed by live music and dancing with The Legacy Band from Savannah. Don your favorite black tie best for a glitzy Golden Gala with the setting of the gorgeous Retreat golf course as the backdrop. Bring a date, bring your wallet, and get ready for a beautiful evening of celebration of the Victory Board’s 50th Anniversary. We hope in 50 years, cancer research will not be necessary, but right now let’s honor the hard work of years past in hopes of a bright and healthy future! Wednesday, November 20 with free admission for Community Appreciation Day. There are some tournament related happenings off-site on Tuesday, November 19 to get you ready for the main event: At the Frederica Academy baseball field on St. Simons Island, PGA TOUR Wives will take on their pro golfer husbands in their annual fiercely competitive and fun game of Wiffle Ball. Gates open at 5:00 p.m., admission to the game is free and it’s always fun! Proceeds benefit Blessings in
a Backpack, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which provides food on the weekends to elementary school children who might otherwise go hungry. If you’d prefer a more refined evening, the St. Simons Island Rotary hosts the annual “Meet the Pros” cocktail party in the Mizner Ballroom at The Cloister on Sea Island at 5:00 p.m. Guests enjoy the chance to mix and mingle with top professional golfers over cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres. The informal press conference interviewing
the participating golfers and the always entertaining Q&A session that follows are highlights of the evening. Tickets for the Meet the RSM Pros event are $75 per person and include one free good-any-one-day ticket to the golf tournament. Proceeds from the event will benefit more than a dozen children’s charities in Glynn County. For more details, visit ssirotary.org. On Wednesday, November 20, tournament gates open at approximately 7:00 a.m. Take advantage of the free admission on Community Day and come watch the Yamaha ProAm Event which will be held on Seaside and Plantation Courses. Featuring PGA TOUR pros, Special Olympics athletes, and Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Georgia participants, the Charity Putting Challenge will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Putting Course near the Golf Performance Center. We love watching the high-fives, big smiles, cheering, and camaraderie between PGA TOUR pro “coaches” and their teams during this event that benefits great causes. At the PGA Tour’s last annual meeting, The RSM Classic was named Best Use Of Players for the way they get players involved tournament week with
the Putting Challenge, Wiffle Ball game, and First Tee caddy program. Rounds One and Two of tournament play will take place on Thursday and Friday, November 21-22 on both Seaside and Plantation courses. Gates open at approximately 9:00 a.m. and tee times will be announced. On Saturday, November 23, play shifts exclusively to the Seaside course for Round Three. It’s Military Appreciation Day as well, so all military service men and women, retirees, and veterans are encouraged to come out and enjoy the day at The RSM Classic. To take advantage of the special ticket pricing for active service members and veterans, visit The RSM Classic website and complete the military verification. All fans attending The RSM Classic on Saturday can also help raise valuable funds for The Folds of Honor Foundation while testing their golf skills and possibly winning $1 Million by participating in The Folds of Honor Million Dollar Challenge, presented by Bridgestone. Participants will compete in a “Closest to the Pin” contest with a select number of finalists qualifying for a one-shot Challenge Round immediately following the third round of The RSM Classic. The finalist who hits their shot closest to the pin will win a Grand Prize Package and a Hole-in-One is worth $1 Million. C’mon and take a swing!
On Saturday night, November 23, Country singer and Georgia native Cole Swindell will be returning by popular demand to take center stage at The RSM Classic Concert sponsored by Southeast Georgia Health System. Tickets for the concert are $40 or $30 for youth ages 17 and under. Combination tickets that include a Saturday grounds ticket for the golf tournament and the concert are available for $50. On Sunday, November 24, the tournament’s final round of play will take place on the Seaside Course. Gates open at approximately 9:00 a.m. Enjoy the beauty of the grounds and walk with the golfers or grab a good seat to see the remaining golfers finish the day. A Butterfly’s Vegas Reunion
ugust was a special time for Christina Godwin, owner of Christina’s Dance World on St. Simons Island. She enjoyed spending a long weekend at the Mirage Hotel for her 20 year reunion with the famous German-American illusionists Siegfried and Roy and 150 of their cast and crew members that she calls family. The gathering in Las Vegas was filled with sparks of joy, shared stories that evoked much laughter, and nostalgic memories that prompted loving tears over and through each cast member. Like a golden thread weaving everyone back together, this reunion spoke volumes about their time with the show: that it was indeed a very unique and privileged experience.
Christina says it was breathtaking and surreal when Siegfried and Roy appeared in “The Secret Garden” at the Mirage hotel. This is where you can find Siegfried most days, shaking hands of guests and fans of this gracious man. They made a date with the alumnus of The Siegfried and Roy Show, delivering a tearful and heartfelt speech. Siegfried told the assembled guests, “I

We are excited to see you all here today with such happy faces and because of you the Siegfried and Roy show lives on.” Christina shares that Siegfried then approached and greeted her by saying, “My little butterfly!” She says he was extremely happy to see her and remembered their bond with him as her mentor and her the “graceful and social butterfly.” Siegfried and Roy had the most successful and highest grossing show in Las Vegas for 40 years. Christina was a lead dancer and an
The lifestyle of a dedicated showgirl was hard work, Christina recalls. It was enjoyable and thrilling, but to be successful, it took talent, skill and a strong work ethic. Christina says, “Being in The Siegfried and Roy Show required the same training and discipline you’d receive by attending The Citadel military college in Charleston!” Thankful for the lifestyle, education and memories from her years of experience in professional showbiz, Christina will always have these qualities instilled her heart. She also shares them in her style of teaching in classes at Christina’s Dance World, the local dance studio she established after returning home from Las Vegas in 1999. That is where Roy’s little butterfly spread her wings.

Protecting Your Dream Home: COASTAL INSURANCE CONSIDERATIONS by C h r i s Te m p l e t o n , M o r r i s & Te m p l e t o n I n s u ra n ce
O
wning a home on the coast is a dream for many. Between the views, easy access to the water or beach, and the beautiful space to gather with family and friends, it’s an exciting and relaxing lifestyle to live. However, hurricane season can quickly turn that dream into a nightmare if you’re not prepared. To prepare, full-time residents or vacation homeowners should invest in home insurance. The inherent risk of coastal living makes coastal home insurance a bit more expensive than homes inland, but it’s worth every penny. Coastal home insurance rates have risen in recent years because the severity of recent storms have forced insurance companies to settle a greater number of customer claims. Unfortunately, these increased operating costs are passed on to the customer. Coastal homeowners should find a reliable agent who is willing to take the risk and understands what it means to live on the coast. A knowledgeable agent can tell you the exposures and coverages needed for your home to include: flood, wind, occupancy, replacement cost, and availability of markets. A standard home insurance policy will typically cover damage or loss

of personal possessions due to theft, fire, or other calamities; but that’s not all you have to consider when living on the coast. Think about wind damage from a hurricane. Think about the rising waters and rough surf. If there’s a chance your home could flood, don’t think twice about buying the maximum flood insurance. The federal government is the only insurer to offer this coverage (through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). It allows you to purchase up to $250,000 in flood insurance for the building itself and an additional $100,000 for personal property coverage. Every home insurance policy is different. Study your deductibles, and make sure you have an agent who knows what is best for you and your home. Most homeowners insurance policy deductibles are between $500 to $1,000. However, hurricane deductibles are calculated differently. They are taken as a percentage of the insured value of the house, only apply to damage caused by a hurricane, and usually range from 1 percent to 5 percent. For example, if your home is insured for $500,000
with a 2 percent hurricane deductible then you would have to pay the first $10,000 of repairs needed to the home (if a hurricane caused the damage). Your insurance agent should clearly outline all of these deductibles, breakdown the procedures in obtaining a policy, and then set expectations for you, if a natural disaster were to hit. ight here in our backyard on St.
Simons Island, we have an impressive group of world class athletes you
might not know about. We’re not talking
about the slew of successful PGA Tour pros who call this home, nor our favorite MLB ace, nor even the football standouts making their way on college and NFL gridirons this season. Many of these athletes are just kids carrying backpacks on their way to school every day and who greet you in their jobs at local restaurants and businesses. is at The Brick martial arts studio putting in hours of training in the sport they love. They are part of the GIMAA Elite Competition Team led by head coach and The Brick owner, Joey Harrison. 21 of Harrison’s students have made the US Martial Arts Team and are currently training as Team Georgia for the TAFISA World Martial Arts Games in London this month. This is an amazing accomplishment for this little school that began nearly a decade ago. Team members have been pulling in trophies and awards across the board. Jamie Brown recently won the Underbelt Grand Champion title at the 2019 U.S. Open recently in Orlando, FL. In Augusta, GA, Maggie Jenkins was named Grand Champion in traditional weapons kata, and earned the event’s title of Overall Underbelt Grand Champion and $500 cash for her skills. These are some fiercely talented young ladies—and the young men are equally as impressive. Just a look at the trophies and awards at The Brick will give you an idea

of how successful the work of these team members has been. Their dedication, sportsmanship, competitive spirit, and camaraderie is exemplary. We will be well represented across the pond! An estimated 500 Martial Arts Athletes of various ages and skill levels, representing up to 20 different nations will gather at the Egham Leisure Centre, London, to compete for a chance to become a WMAGC World Games Champion on October 24th. The US Martial Arts Team is a member of The Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA) and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and adheres to the “sport for all” model by filling its roster with children and adults, male and female. The US Martial Arts Team is organized as a 501(c) 3 charity and operates from the generous donations of its fans, family, and friends as well as the support it receives from its sponsors. They currently have a GoFundMe Page USMATEAMGA to help raise funds to help with their expenses to compete in TAFISA World Martial Arts Games in London in October. Their recent Burritos & Bingo was a big success and they are extremely appreciative of the community support for that event and continued efforts to assist them in their journey. But garage doors definitely aren’t all they do! In addition to providing commercial and residential garage doors and electric openers for your home or business, Overhead Door Company of Brunswick
specializes in the sales and installation of residential and commercial custom replacement Provia fiberglass and steel entry doors, French doors, patio doors, sliding barn doors, and specialty storm doors. If you have dogs and cats that like to come and go as they please, their Plexidor pet doors are a perfect solution. To take a closer look at the fine craftsmanship of the products Overhead Door sells, visit the 2,000 square-foot showroom at 214 Rose Drive in Brunswick that they completed
earlier this year. It’s a must-see for anyone looking for a higher quality replacement door. After our recent brush with Dorian, there’s something else Overhead Door Company of Brunswick offers that you may want to consider: residential and commercial rolling hurricane shutters. They are an excellent way to protect your investment in your home or business property by minimizing storm damage to the building and the contents therein. Ask about the Nautilus Shutter System and find out how Overhead Door Company can make hurricane season a little less scary. All of the doors carried by Overhead Door Company can be purchased directly from their expert sales team, and they also service most makes and models of garage doors and openers. They can keep you on track, so to speak, with a simple garage door service call. This includes
inspection, lubrication, and any necessary adjustments to tracks, hinges, rollers, cables, door balance and alignment, springs, motors, and photo eyes. They’ll even help program remote controls and are happy to give out free battery replacements to anyone needing a new battery who comes by the showroom! It’s not just high quality products that set Overhead Door Company of Brunswick apart from all the rest; their customer service is truly second to none. The prompt, reliable, professional service provided by Overhead Door Company’s experienced service technicians is so special that it has earned the name +LOVE™. You’ll never want to shop anywhere
The Walkers have set a standard and expectation of excellence and require that all Overhead Door Company of Brunswick employees meet those standards. This includes passing drug tests and a vigorous background check. They know it’s important that you can always feel safe with their employees in your home or place of business. With over 75 years of combined experience, the members of the Overhead Door Company of Brunswick staff have numerous IDEA certifications, including Residential Technician Certification, and IDEA Sanctioned Trainer Certification. They are also continually striving to improve their knowledge and skills through ongoing training to better serve their valued customers. In their 25 years, Overhead Door Company of Brunswick has earned the coveted Eagle Award from Overhead Door Corporation six times. We have had no problems, and if we do, I have confidence the company will stand behind their products. If you need a door, they are the only ones to call!” It is the long-term relationships the Walkers have established and maintained with their customers over the past 25 years that they consider their most important achievement. A quarter century in business speaks volumes about those relationships and the success of the company. Gene, Susan, and other members of the Overhead Door team are familiar faces at local events and fundraisers and are active in the community. “We’ve built some great relationships over the years and hope we’ve been able to give back to this community a little of what they’ve given us,” says Susan. We’ll just have to wait and see what they’re going to accomplish in the next 25 years! The Women Who Helped Shape the Island’s Economy
A
scrapbook donated to the Coastal Georgia Historical Society in 1991 documents the activities of the former St. Simons Women’s Club and provides a snapshot of island life during the 1950s, before tourism became a booming industry. According to a report included in the scrapbook, club members had identified a growing need to attract visitors throughout the year to provide a more stable economy for area residents. The report noted that “St. Simons has remained for fifty years more a summer beach resort with only a three months’ business.” In 1953, the Club established an “adult center” in the Village, open year round, to welcome visitors. The Center was
adjacent to the Golden Isles Hotel, which was located on the west side of Mallery Street near the pier. In addition to providing a handicraft shop, lending library, and restroom facility for visitors, the Center hosted weekly activities enjoyed by the community, such as bingo, bridge lessons, and sewing workshops. The Center also had a television set for public use and by 1956 boasted two air conditioning units.
clinics, water skiing lessons, and a children’s choir. Visitor services that were pioneered by the Club are now managed and funded by Glynn County and the Golden Isles Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Over the next few years, the Club took over additional space in the hotel buildings and also sponsored numerous recreational activities at other island locations. These included youth programs such as weekly dances, tennis
This month’s images feature the Center’s shop, where handcrafted items from Georgia were sold, and a view of the west side of Mallery Street. The St. Simons Women’s Club was located in the building on the left.
