ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
he word community comes from the Latin word “civitas.” St. Simons Island is the community and common bond that all Elegant Island Living readers share. It is a special place that many of us call home, and countless others come to visit on an annual basis with the hope of eventually calling it home. There is a local saying that everyone in Atlanta and Macon wants to retire on St. Simons! Most folks would say it would be impossible to fit all of Atlanta and Macon on St. Simons Island, but geographically speaking, St. Simons Island is basically the same size the island of Manhattan: about 3 miles wide by 10 miles long. So the next time you hear someone say the island is too crowded, remember, it could be worse! I grew up on St. Simons and have lived in New York City. And while I love visiting the big city, there is nothing like the feeling of crossing over the Frederica Bridge onto the island. And I am sure that each one of you know and appreciate that feeling as well. I want to say a special thank you to all the advertisers who have supported EIL during the last fifteen years. Without our advertisers, there would be no EIL. So, please frequent the stores, restaurants, and businesses you see in EIL. Or better yet, do like my mom does: walk into a store with a copy of EIL and show the store owner their ad and say, “I came in because
I saw your ad in EIL!” I know 99% of them probably roll their eyes because they KNOW she’s my mom! It has a been an honor and a privilege for our “team” to have been welcomed in your homes each month for the past fifteen years. We sincerely hope you will invite us back for the next fifteen!

On the Cover: It’s Elegant Island Living’s 15th year in publication! What better way to commemorate this Crystal Anniversary than with a fun interactive cover that opens to display a photo of the crystalline beehive of the Fresnel lens atop the St. Simons Island Lighthouse. We recreated the photo of our island’s iconic structure using pictures we’ve taken of YOU, the members of our community, over the past 15 years. ATER ARTIUM NECESSITAS by David Butler
Necessity is the mother of invention is an axiom we have all heard. It is an English saying that means, essentially, that the primary driving force behind most new inventions is a need. In my case with Elegant Island Living, it was the need to eat and pay rent. I was sitting at a table at Brogen’s North, having just been fired from my job as the sales/production person for The Real Estate Book local franchise. The owner of the local franchise lived in Jacksonville and, unbeknownst to me, had sold the franchise to someone else. The new owner had driven up from Ponte Vedra to introduce himself and tell (continues) 20

me my services would no longer be needed. It was only the second time in my life I had been fired. The first time was on a made-fortelevision movie set, where I was a stand-in for one of the main actors in the movie. That basically meant that I would stand in a certain spot so the lighting people could set the lights. Once the lighting was set, the “real” actor would come in and they would shoot the scene. Long story short, I got tired of standing. I had watched the “real” actor all day and felt I was a better actor than he was. Similarly, as I sat there in Brogen’s North, I decided that I could create a better magazine for St. Simons Island than The Real Estate Book. I never planned on being a magazine publisher. In fact, from the time I was about nine years old, I wanted to be a sports broadcaster. I used to love watching Wide World of Sports. You remember the dramatic introduction: “Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport … the thrill of victory … and the agony of defeat … the human drama of athletic completion … This is ABC’s Wide World of Sports!” I wanted to be Jim Lampley, covering cliff diving in Acapulco or Chris Schenkel covering the Olympics! I went to the University of Georgia and majored in Journalism. My senior year I did an internship with CNN Sports and quickly realized I wasn’t cut out for the sports broadcasting business. My first exposure to the magazine business was when I went to work for McGrawHill, selling advertising for a trade magazine called Textile World. If any of you ever suffer from insomnia I would suggest buying a subscription to Textile World magazine. It will put you to sleep in five minutes or less, I promise. Elegant Island Homes & Communities premiered in August of 2002. It was strictly a real estate magazine featuring properties for sale with a value of $750,000 or more. I was very fortunate to have the initial support of local realtors like Freddy Stroud, Pat Cooper, Dee Wright, Klickie Aiken and Phoebe Hoaster, to name 22
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
just a few. The magazine was 24 pages and came out every two months. In 2004, I decided to convert the magazine to more of a lifestyle magazine while keeping the real estate as an integral part. I changed the name to Elegant Island Living and started publishing an issue every month rather than bi-monthly. From the very beginning, I wanted Elegant Island Living to be a publication that locals would want to leave on their coffee table and visitors would want to take home with them. That is exactly what happens today, because we have an amazing staff! Beth Rowen is our Art Director. She is the look and feel of the magazine. Her artistic vision drives the magazine. She is the Leonardo da Vinci of EIL. “It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” ~ Leonardo da Vinci Terry McCarthy is our Production Manager. She is the glue that holds the magazine together. From coming up with feature article ideas to implementing fashion shoots, handling ad copy layouts and helping the sales staff, Terry does the work of any three people on a big city magazine staff. She is also the closest thing I have to a wife. She keeps me in line, nags me when I’m not doing my job, tells me when I’m wrong, and is my biggest supporter (other than my mom, of course).
Terry is the Wizard of Oz of EIL. “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!” ~Spoken by The Wizard of Oz, played by Frank Morgan, in the film The Wizard of Oz.
Kathi Williams is our Editorial and Social Media Director. In addition to writing and editing copy for the magazine, she keeps EIL relevant in this digital age. I don’t have a 13 year-old son or daughter who knows how to tweet, Snapchat, Instagram, or even post on Facebook, I have something better: I have Kathi! She does an amazing job posting information about community events, advertiser sales and products, late breaking news, etc. She also creates the EIL Insider newsletter that is chock full of great information every week. If you haven’t subscribed, go to elegantislandliving.net and sign up today! Kathi created the I’m With the Band section that thousands of EIL readers go to to find out where the best music is being played over the weekend. As the Social Media Director, Kathi attends numerous events to take photos to share on social media and helps round up people for the pictures that go in our Social Scene pages. Maybe Kathi is such a whiz at social media, because she DOES have a teenager and has to stay a step ahead! Kathi is the Arianna Huffington of EIL. “Don’t just climb the ladder of success - a ladder that leads, after all, to higher and higher levels of stress and burnout -but chart a new path to success, remaking it in a way that includes not just the conventional metrics
of money and power, but a third metric that includes well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving, so that the goal is not just to succeed but to thrive.” ~ Arianna Huffington Yolanda O’Hern is our Senior Account Manager. She sells the advertising that allows us to be able to publish the magazine. EIL is a free community publication (with the exception of the paid mail subscription service that began this year) that is supported through advertising revenue. Yolanda works with dozens of small business owners to help them get their message out to the thousands of EIL readers each month. She is fiercely loyal to her advertisers and is the hardest working woman in sales that I have ever met. When I first met with Yolanda a few years back, I told her I was looking for part-time sales help. There’s nothing part-time about Yolanda! Yolanda is the Thomas Watson of EIL. “Nothing happens until someone sells something” ~Thomas Watson, IBM Molly Duckworth handles Regional Media Sales. Molly was enjoying retirement from her position doing ad sales at the local paper until that fateful day I was in Duckworth Tire, getting new tires. I told her husband, Bill, for her to come out of retirement and to help me sell ads for EIL. Molly has years of marketing experience and loves helping folks get their message out. She is also as big a dog lover as I am and has a Chihuahua who may be the coolest dog on the island: Maxwell Smart, a.k.a. Max. Molly is the Cesar Millan of EIL. “People say I train dogs, but in many ways I train people.” ~Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan Julie Andrew is not only a Marketing Consultant for EIL, she is also an accomplished
photographer who is our go-to gal for all social functions. She and Kathi Williams call to mind Batman and Robin as the Dynamic Duo of EIL. Julie is the best multitasker we have. Whatever the situation, from selling an ad, to taking photos, to helping produce fashion shoots, and covering multiple social events in a night, Julie gets it done. Julie is the Batman of EIL. “Remember to always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Then always be Batman” ~ Unknown
Pam Ingram is the newest member of the EIL family. She just recently came on board as a Marketing Consultant. After years of ad sales in Atlanta, Pam and her husband, Neil, retired here and made the mistake of moving in next door to me. They have become grandparents to my dogs – who are spoiled. And then there's Todd Baker. He is “that guy” when it comes to all things Real Estate, and it’s nice to know that the advertisers who helped start EIL are in his capable hands. Which brings us to me, your humble correspondent. Just as I have said on numerous occasions that I am no actor and have over twenty performances with the Island Players to prove it, I am also no writer. My job description with EIL would be Chief Cook and Bottle Washer or Jack of All Trades, Master of None. My ONE job every month is to come up with a publisher’s letter. It is a task I dread. For some reason, I am unable to sit down at my computer and write (well, type) anything for the magazine unless I am under a fast approaching deadline. Case in point, it is now 12:58 a.m.
and THIS article is due to the Wizard of Oz, a.k.a. Terry by 9:00 a.m. I have had this assignment for well over two weeks, yet somehow, I could not come up with the inspiration to tickle the keyboard and come up with something worthy of your time. The same goes with my publisher’s letter each month. The process of coming up with those 350 words each issue goes like this: After getting 3-4 threatening texts from the Wizard of Oz that my publisher’s letter is “due today by 3:00 p.m.,” I reluctantly head toward my computer. I start out by opening up Microsoft Word and staring at a blank white “sheet.” After five minutes or so of no inspiration, I walk to the fridge and open it, knowing that since I eat out EVERY meal, there is nothing IN the fridge. I close it and go back to the computer. Eventually a subject will pop in my mind. It’s usually not what ends up in the magazine, but it gets my fingers tapping on the keyboard. Sometimes I can knock out a publisher’s letter in twenty minutes. Other times I sit there for what seems like hours and … nothing. I am the Steven Wright of EIL. “I’m writing a book. I’ve got the page numbers done.” “I was trying to daydream, but my mind kept wandering.” And my favorite: “I saw a sign at a gas station. It said, ‘Help wanted.’ There was another sign below it that said, ‘Self Service.’ So I hired myself. Then I made myself the boss. I gave myself a raise. I paid myself. Then I quit.” ~Stephen Wright
Thank you, dear readers, for allowing us to come into your homes each month for the past 15 years to share with you our love for this little piece of Elegant Island Living we call St. Simons Island. For this special anniversary issue, we look to the community and back through our pages to share how EIL has been telling your stories and reaching readers like yourself. For us, that’s what it is and always has been all about – COMMUNITY. (15 Years of Elegant Island Living continues)

iving WHAT NEVER FAILS TO AMAZE,
year after year, is the generosity of people in the Golden Isles. From the sheer number of not-for-profit and charitable organizations with their myriad of worthy causes to the donations made by local businesses and individuals to support fundraisers and benefit the community. Every month EIL writes about, profiles, or promotes events for not-for-profit/ charitable organizations, churches, and schools. We are dedicated to telling their stories, and every word and photograph on every page is created at no cost to the organization. This is our way of giving back to the community. On the following pages you’ll find photos and excerpts from just some of the many stories about the annual events and organizations we’ve covered over the past 15 years. December 2016 A Shuckin Good Time The Annual St. Simons Land Trust Oyster Roast here is nothing better than a good oyster roast with friends and neighbors in a gorgeous marshside setting under a canopy of branches dripping with Spanish moss. Unless it’s being at an oyster roast that benefits a great cause, like protecting and preserving more settings like that around the island. That’s exactly what the St. Simons Land Trust Oyster Roast is all about. (continues)

April 2014 Anchors Away Reelin’ in the Cure American Cancer Society Victory Board Fundraiser Just like fishing, a lone casual outing won’t always get you the trophy you want to land. You need to spend some time on the waters to reel in the big fish. In the same way, the Victory Board is asking you to wade in and join them in the year-long ACS fundraising campaign that continues this month with Reelin’ in a Cure, the popular tripletail fishing tournament and band party, and will wrap up in December with the annual Victory Gala. “Everyone has a Big Fish Moment. Mine was several years ago at the Rich Products Redbone Celebrity Classic with a 40+inch Redfish. Despite having caught only one fish in two days, I still received the “Biggest Fish” Award. I think it was beginner’s luck and a great captain.”
This year we are introducing an additional medical fund, The Hugh Nunnally Medical Fund, to garner even more support for HSSCG’s medical needs. Hugh Nunnally graciously reached out to HSSCG as the community philanthropist he is known to be, and provided substantial support for the animals in HSSCG’s care. In addition to helping HSSCG, he’s known to be a community hero, having made significant contributions to Southeast Georgia Health Systems and College of Coastal Georgia, just to name a few. April 2014 Of Hats & Horses Frederica Academy’s Annual Derby Day Fundraiser It’s time to bring out the grandeur and style of the old South with some contemporary flair. Derby Day returns to the Sea Island Retreat Clubhouse on St. Simons Island. But for the Derby fashionista, the eternal question is which comes first? The hat or the dress? This is a continued topic of debate. Many advise getting the outfit first so you can design your hat to match the outfit. However, there is another school of thought that holds that the hat is the centerpiece and should be purchased or designed as so, and the outfit should be chosen to complement the hat.

THE POWER OF September & October 2015
February 2014 A Love that Lives On ECW Christ Church Frederica Tour of Homes Anson, Jr. fell in love with his first cousin, Ellen Ada Phelps Dodge, and despite some misgivings by the family, married her in 1880 when he was 20 years-old. In the tradition of the wealthy, they traveled around the world on their honeymoon—a trip that would take more than 3 years, but ended in tragedy. Ellen ate contaminated fruit while in India and died of cholera. Anson, Jr. promised her on her deathbed that he would never leave her side. He had her body embalmed, placed in a metal coffin, then in an ebony casket and returned with her to St. Simons Island. Upon his return, Dodge dedicated his life to Christ, becoming an Episcopal priest, and rebuilt the church on the island as a memorial to his deceased wife. The church was built in the form of an inverted ship’s hull to denote a “ship of faith,” and when it was completed in 1884, Ellen’s casket was stored in a lead vault under the altar where Dodge preached so that he could keep his promise to never leave her side.
The Power of Pink: BigWigs Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia Elegant Island Living was proud to partner with Susan G. Komen Coastal Georgia for the BigWig Brigade to raise funds for breast cancer prevention. “I said yes specifically for Claire Moody, a friend who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. I am also doing this in support of the many other women who are battling breast cancer. And, of course, there’s Julie. It was Julie Grimm who called me about this. Julie was in treatment for her breast cancer at the hospital when I was there, and she was my introduction to Komen. I think she’s amazing and I would do anything for her.” – Susan Bates, Owner of Tipsy McSway’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill in Historic Downtown Brunswick
April 2016 The Gift of Arbor Golden Isles Fund for Trees Luckily, Sandy Turbidy cares a whole awful lot and had a dream as well. The GIFT tree foundation is the embodiment of Sandy’s longstanding dream. Established in November 2015, GIFT is a component fund of the Communities of Coastal Georgia Foundation with a mission to provide for the preservation of the tree canopy in Glynn County through the planting and replacement of trees, education, and advocacy. April 2014 Excitement is Building Habitat for Humanity Yes, excitement is building, and building is exciting at Habitat for Humanity of Glynn County. Already this year (2014) with the great support of volunteers, HFH has built its 76th home in Glynn County. In fact, through a special blitz build, it was built in only a week. (continues)

October 2016 Reaching for the Stars STAR Foundation In 1996, Ellen, along with Katie and brother-in-law Wally Orrel, who Ellen considers her mentor, approached Don McGlamory, Director of the City of Brunswick Housing Authority, with a proposal to offer computer training to the residents of public housing – to enable them to qualify for higher paying jobs. Mr. McGlamory agreed to the plan on a trial basis and in January of 1997 the first students were enrolled, and STAR Foundation was born. The organization also acquired 501(c)(3) non-profit status the same year.
April 2009 Cassina Garden Club Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk The Garden Walk celebrates the horticultural beauty of the coastal area while offering an opportunity for visitors to explore and enjoy a select group of the Islands’ most beautiful gardens. With locations from ocean to marsh and river to lagoon and growing conditions of bright sun to dappled shade, the spotlighted gardens offer a huge variety of ideas for gardeners all across the Coastal South. Docents will be in each garden to highlight unusual plant materials and garden art. Several gardens will feature performances by musicians and local artists painting the landscape.

October 2008 A World of Caring in the Golden Isles Several non-profits It’s once again the time of year when residents of the Golden Isles open their hearts and wallets in support of not-for-profit agencies and fundraising events in a spirit of community generosity. In addition to acknowledging the work of charitable initiatives with direct monetary donations, we can also plan our social calendars around some of the innovative benefits, planned by invaluable volunteers in a true spirit of dedication and hard work. December 2014 A Heart for the Hungry Lord of Life Lutheran Church Manna House Fundraiser Lord of Life Lutheran church has been hosting the Have a Heart for Manna House dinner dance for almost a decade. The annual dinner dance and silent auction event is the largest fundraising effort on behalf of Manna House, the only daily soup kitchen in Glynn Country. Located in the heart of Brunswick on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Manna House provides over 150 free lunches for people in need each day, Sunday through Saturday. Grand Slam February 2015
October 2015, October & November 2016
In 2015, Davis Love III and his wife, Robin, were thrilled to present nearly a million dollars to local charities, representing moneys raised by The McGladrey (now RSM) Classic, a PGA Tour event hosted by Love and played at Sea Island’s Seaside golf course, and the Birdies for Love program.
It’s been a fantastic time for our local golfers too. We were there to celebrate when Davis Love III garnered his 21st career victory at the Wyndham Cup and Zach Johnson brought back the Claret Jug from his win at the 2015 British Open. We were thrilled when Davis was named US Team Captain for the Ryder Cup in both 2012 and 2016. When he and fellow Ryder Cup team member and St. Simons resident Matt Kuchar brought that cup home following the win at Hazeltine, we were even more excited! Just a month earlier, we greeted Matt at the airport when he returned from the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with his bronze medal.
January 2016 Perhaps one of the most exciting sports accomplishments for our publisher was the run for the 2015 GHSA State Championship by the Glynn Academy Red Terrors. As a former quarterback for the team, he made sure we were on top of every playoff game and cheering for those boys in red when they got to Atlanta. Though they didn’t secure the title, they were champs in our book!
January 2016 Not to be outdone, island ladies made some big strides in the sports world too. St. Simons Island’s very own Morgan Brian was a member of the 2015 World Cup winning US Women’s National Team, which earned her a Sports Illustrated cover and an SSI homecoming parade. In November 2015, Diana Murphy was named President of the United State Golf Association, only the second woman to hold this title. (continues)

February 2015 The Crab Trap: 40 Years Strong Once described as a “fine, little eatery” in the August 1979 edition of Brown’s Guide to Georgia, The Crab Trap is now a longstanding island staple known for tasty seafood, great staff and service, as well as the lingering casual island atmosphere that made it an immediate hit when it opened. June 2014 More Personal than Wild Observing Wild & Personal Boutique’s 15th anniversary, owner Christine Proffitt said, “I feel blessed because I’ve been able to maintain, when other people have come and gone. I am thankful for my terrific helpers, all of my regular customers, and to community partners like Elegant Island Living.” April 2008 & June 2015 A.W. Jones Heritage Celebrations In April 2008, we heralded the opening of the A.W. Jones Heritage Center as a landmark achievement by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. And in June 2015, we paid tribute to that organization which began in 1965 as a small group of local residents with a passion for preservation, and 50 years later holds ownership of the St. Simons Lighthouse and the A.W. Jones Heritage Center and is custodian of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Dwelling and the Historic Coast Guard Station.
April 2009 Keys for the Cure Five Grands Twenty Hands, which took place at Wesley United Methodist Church, raised $43,000 with their performances, benefitting Relay for Life. (15 Years of EIL continues)

As a volunteer board president, as a volunteer at events, and by giving us coverage in EIL and through social media posts. David has been known to take in dogs that are not adoptable. He is always there, with a big smile, ready to help. David is and has always been an important person in this community; he is so big-hearted and supports not only our local humane society, but so many other noteworthy organizations in Glynn County.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
h, the places we’ve been! From iconic locales to vanishing hideaways, we’ve shared so many stories about the places and spaces that make up our island home. In 2012, we talked about the Coastal Historical Society’s campaign to restore
THE KEEPER’S DWELLING
at the St. Simons Lighthouse.
They later won an award for that restoration project. Fred Griffith updated progress on the restoration of
INDIAN MOUND COTTAGE on Jekyll Island. He also shared its history as part of the millionaires’ playground and his own childhood memories of it. Fred also wrote about the storied St. Simons Island restaurant and bar EMMALINE
& HESSIE. Ahhh, the memories … We learned about the heydays of Jekyll Island’s AQUARAMA. The Aquarama was demolished in 2010 and replaced by the new Jekyll Island Convention Center. Cameron Wicker introduced us to CABIN BLUFF,
the 24,000-acre sportsman’s paradise that was once Howard Coffin’s private retreat on the banks of the Cumberland River. Photos captured the echoes of by-gone days at
ALFONZA’S OLDE
PLANTATION SUPPER CLUB. That beloved island restuarant celebrated its last evening open on New Year’s Eve 1999. Bill Jones III escorted us around BROADFIELD, a place he likes to call God’s country. Sea Island’s 5,800 acre sporting property in Camden County was carved from the grounds of one of the South’s earliest hunting clubs. According to the February 2014 Hideaway Report,
LITTLE ST. SIMONS ISLAND offers an exceptional experience of pristine nature, made all the more enjoyable by a terrific staff and the comfortable accommodations.” That sums it up perfectly! The BRUNSWICK-GOLDEN
ISLES AIRPORT served an important role in World
War II as Naval Air Station Glynco. It was home base for the Airship Squadron 15 blimps that were used to escort ship convoys reshaped the city and country’s future.
GLYNN ACADEMY alumnus Mason
Stewart shared the history of his alma mater’s hallowed halls and recollections of some of his many fellow alumni. Up the road in Darien, we stopped in to see the lost art of printing on the manual press carried on at
ASHANTILLY CENTER. Once the winter home of planter Thomas Spalding and later the birthplace of Bill Haynes’ Ashantilly Press, that legacy is proudly carried on. (continues)

n 2008, we were there when revered educator and mentor HERMAN
HUDSON was inducted
into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame. Coach Hudson retired from Glynn Academy after 28 years coaching football, basketball, and golf. EIL Intern Riley Benefield interviewed her grandfather DEWEY
BENEFIELD about life on St. Simons Island since his move here in 1958. Benefield was one of the founders of Frederica Academy and Atlantic National Bank, and worked at Sea Island Co. for almost 40 years. We cheered on TEAM
HAMPTON as we learned about Sandy and Bob Dunlap’s work training
their spaniel Hampton in pursuit of a Master Hunting title and that blaze orange ribbon. Cameron Wicker gave us some insight into the relationship between once teacher and student and now Hodnett-Cooper co-workers
PAT COOPER
created by GOGO
and
MISSY NEU.
We looked at the naturally exotic beauty
FERGUSON and her daughter HANNAH SAYRE-THOMAS.
These lovely ladies carry on the Carnegie legacy, living on Cumberland Island, and creating jewelry and other art inspired by the nature that surrounds them. EIL’s own Yolanda O’Hern shared her amazing story about meeting
THE BEATLES
– not just once, but TWICE! In October
2014, we marked the end of an era with the closing of Left Bank Art Gallery and celebrated its owner,
MILDRED HUIE WILCOX, and the immense contributions she has made to the Golden Isles art community. Valerie Hepburn spotlighted ORION AND
SHIRLEY DOUGLASS
for the judge’s commitment to preserving African-American heritage and the couple’s philanthropic works in the community.
BILL JONES III and the undeniable legacy of the Jones family who acted as
stewards of the Golden Isles for nearly a century, were highlighted in October 2015. It’s not just the beauty of our surroundings that make this place so special, it’s all the people who make up this community too! (continues)

e are a community of world travelers. From day-trips to nearby barrier islands and coastal towns to cross-country jaunts to vineyards and mountain trails, we have shared many stories of stateside getaways. Our travels have not stopped there, however, we have been able to virtually venture to exotic locations like the African plains, the Amazon jungle, both brightly lit cities and more serene country towns of Europe and beyond. We thank all of our intrepid travelers for taking us along on these adventures.

e boldly proclaim on our cover and in our social media that EIL produces content reflecting the St. Simons Island and Sea Island lifestyle. It takes a community to make that happen. Every printed story and image got there because someone in the community did something. We have made it our job to tell those stories and, fortunately, we have a whole lot of help doing that. We would like to give everyone involved a warm shout out. (continues)

In Fond Memory During this decade and a half of producing EIL, we have had to say goodbye to some beloved contributors, valued community members, advertisers who were also friends, and other members of the EIL extended family. We won’t list those we have lost for fear of inadvertently missing a name, but we do want to say that they each left their mark on us and we will always remember them.
A Heartfelt Thanks Throughout this issue and on the cover, you’ve seen photo mosaics made up of smaller pictures. Those were created from the many thousands of Social Scene photos we’ve taken over the years. Pictures of YOU, your families, friends, and colleagues. Look closely to see who you recognize! Just like your images combine in those mosaics to make a bigger, beautiful picture, you, as a part of this community, have always been our bigger picture and the focus of this magazine. Thank you for being part of these past 15 years. It’s our honor and pleasure to represent you. 94

he genuine Southern hospitality and luxurious experiences that Sea Island has been delivering for nearly a century are extended in a unique way through the Southern Grown Festival. In this third year of the three-day festival, events celebrating the food, spirits, music and culture of the South will be celebrated on Labor Day weekend, September 1-3. One of the highlights of the festival will be Friday evening’s Garden & Gun kick-off dinner with James Beard Award-winning chef, Mike Lata from FIG and The Ordinary in Charleston. At last year’s festival, Lata opened festivities with the Garden & Gun Dinner and Show with Chefs Jonathan Jerusalmy and Nico Romo and presented a class on extraordinary oysters as part of the Southern Grown University. This year Lata’s cuisine and the
music of the Steep Canyon Rangers will share top billing on Rainbow Island. Lata has been described as a hands-on, self-taught chef who values simplicity and understatement. A native New Englander, he spent time in Boston, New Orleans, Atlanta, and France before moving to Charleston in 1998 and opening FIG there with partner Adam Nemirow in 2003. Considered a key player in Charleston’s culinary rebirth, Lata won the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Southeast in 2009, after nominations the two previous years. In 2015, his protégé at FIG, Jason Stanhope, won the same award. FIG has also been nominated for Outstanding Wine Program by the James Beard Foundation in 2014, 2015, and 2016. FIG is widely recognized as one of the best restaurants in Charleston. (continues) Chef Mike Lata

FIG was named an Eater Hall of Fame restaurant. Bill Addison said in his review: “Only one meal in Charleston? Make it Mike Lata and Jason Stanhope’s paragon [FIG], which takes its cues from the Lowcountry’s abundant waters.” Lata and Nemirow opened The Ordinary in 2012. This oyster hall housed in a 1920s bank also garners rave reviews. It was nominated as a Best New Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation in 2013. Chef Lata is a champion of local farmers, fishermen, and purveryors and is an active member of the Southern Foodways Alliance. The evening’s festivities in the gorgeous rustic marshfront setting at Rainbow Island continue with a performance by the GRAMMY® Award-winning Steep Canyon Rangers from Asheville, North Carolina. This night of Americana overlooking the Black Banks River, presented by Garden & Gun, will be pure magic. The kick-off dinner and concert is included for SoGro All Access Pass holders. À la carte tickets for the event can be purchased for $175 per person (includes all libations). On Saturday, guests can spend the day at the Southern Grown Marketplace & Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) right at Sea Island. The Marketplace and Exposition is a
celebration of wildlife and nature through fine art, conservation seminars, sporting presentations, and the fantastic food and drink that is the hallmark of the entire weekend. With numerous artists and exhibitors on-site, guests can mix and mingle with dozens of unique Southern artisans and purveyors. Festival goers can also participate in an array of demonstrations and lectures, such as mixology lessons with award-winning bartenders, exciting falconry experiences with experts from Broadfield, Sea Island’s 5,800-acre Sporting Club and Lodge, and a bird dog training exhibition by Broadfield Bird Dog Trainer Wes Schlosser, as well as tips and tricks from Broadfield Garden Manager Sean Rakoczy. he College of Coastal Georgia named veteran University of Georgia administrator Meg Amstutz as interim president when Greg Aloia announced his retirement in June. “Meg brings a great depth of experience in both academics and administration in public higher education,” said University of Georgia Chancellor Steve Wrigley in a press release announcing the appointment. That was no overstatement. Meg was serving as associate provost for academic programs at UGA and
has worked in the office of the President for 16 years, as assistant to the president for 10 years and chief of staff for six years. She was kind enough to take some time to meet with us as she starts preparing for the upcoming school year and to share her vision for the Mariners. master’s and Ph.D. degrees in English and American Literature at Washington University in St. Louis. She served in various administrative roles at the Missouri Humanities Council prior to her tenure at University of Georgia. When the opportunity arose for her to return to the South in a position at UGA, she says she jumped on it eagerly.
she explains that she came from institutions that were more research focused, whereas here the focus is on student instruction and success. The emphasis at CCGA is to create a supportive environment for students. Faculty development is centered on providing faculty who aren’t just there putting in time on a job, but who feel invested in the students.
Meg was familiar with Brunswick and the Golden Isles from coming here for conferences. Her first visit was eight years ago and she recalls being struck by the beauty of it here. When she returned four years ago, she was amazed to see the growth that had taken place at the college and the new residence halls. She says the community should be very proud of their planning and providing space for the college to grow and expand to meet their needs and create such a beautiful campus.
Meg says the biggest challenge is fundraising, finding private support for scholarships, capital improvements, sports programs. Meg says, it’s
Meg is impressed to see the college striving to serve the community by providing majors that meet the needs of the area. She is also pleased to see strong community support for the college. She says, “There is such great energy and possibility!” And when we talk about possibility, Meg says the college is focused on growing enrollment that’s manageable. She says that CCGA is on a good trajectory for slow, steady growth. Two percent growth per year is the magic number for manageable growth and that’s where they’d like to see CCGA. When we asked Meg how her new role at CCGA is different from her prior positions,

Meg invites everyone to come out to the campus to visit, to attend Mariners sporting events, and any cultural programs offered. She wants the community to get familiar with this fantastic higher learning institution right here in our backyard and remember not to overlook CCGA as a viable college choice in Georgia. Not only is it easily accessible, the college has been nationally identified as one of the Best Values in Education by the US Department of Education and was recently ranked #7 in the list of Top Public
