PUBLISHER’S LETTER
T
hanksgiving is unquestionably a time to reflect on things we are thankful for. But being thankful is not just for this November holiday. We should
always take the time to look around us and be thankful for all the great things in our lives, no matter how small or trivial they may seem. Before getting into what there is to be thankful for, there’s a big reason to express your thanks: it’s good for you. Studies have shown that regular expressions of gratitude can decrease blood pressure, reduce anxiety and depression, and even help you sleep better. An excellent way to show gratitude during this holiday season is to pay it forward.
With that in mind, I’ve come up with 10 random and easy pay it forward ideas and I’d like to encourage EIL readers to take up this challenge for the month of November.
1. Let that car merge on to Frederica Road in front of you. 2. Return shopping carts for people at the grocery store. 3. Donate old blankets and towels to Glynn County Animal Services or the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia.
4. Say hello to the person next to you in line at the Post Office. 5. Smile at 5 strangers each day. 6. Buy coffee for the person behind you in line at your favorite coffee shop. 7. Pick up one piece of trash you see on the ground daily. 8. Let someone with only a few items go before you in the check-out lane. 9. Send a positive text message to someone different each day. 10. Leave a kind server a big tip. These pay it forward opportunities cost very little or nothing, don’t take much time, and could make someone’s entire day. Don’t just think about it, DO IT! The Elegant Island Living family wishes you and your family a
Happy Thanksgiving!

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
I
n the Golden Isles, we’re surrounded by the lush natural splendor of the maritime forest, open blue skies, and a vast expanse of the ocean. Maybe this combination is what makes it an idyllic place for dreamers. It calls to artistic and adventurous spirits, drawing painters and poets,
storytellers and singers, athletes and entrepreneurs. This place and this community have shaped individuals who boldly make their mark out in the world. Here in this unique and special environment, seeds of dreams are planted, nurtured, and allowed to flourish. In these pages, we celebrate dreams, those who are making theirs come true, and this beautiful place that inspires them.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
THE RSM CLASSIC, AN OFFICIAL PGA TOUR EVENT HOSTED BY THE DAVIS LOVE FOUNDATION, OFFERS PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO REALIZE THEIR DREAMS AT SEA ISLAND GOLF CLUB ON ST. SIMONS ISLAND AS PART OF THE FED EX FALL SERIES, BUT IT ALSO MAKES DREAMS COME TRUE FOR MANY OTHERS. With more than 1,200 volunteers participating, numerous corporate partners and sponsors, and relationships with several community non-profit organizations, the tournament’s positive effects last far longer than the week of golf that is played here. This much-anticipated event returns the week of November 13-19, and it promises to be another year of exciting competition on the course and the unrivaled Southern hospitality for which little island is known. RSM Classic Tournament Director Todd Thompson says, “We spend all year planning a memorable experience for players, their families, caddies, our partners, volunteers, media, and the spectators who visit us from across the country and around the globe. Our team is so excited to welcome everyone to the Golden Isles and Sea Island Resort so they can experience great golf and the warm Southern hospitality of our area. We are so fortunate to make our home in this amazing community that has embraced The RSM Classic and all those who come here.” Year after year volunteers and spectators return to enjoy the intimate environment of the tournament. Volunteer Terry Britt shares her enthusiasm about the event. “I live at Carolina Beach in North Carolina and love coming to volunteer at The RSM Classic. I’ve volunteered at many tournaments including the Wells Fargo Championship and several of the majors. Each one provides a unique experience, but The RSM Classic is very special to me. I love the community and my volunteer role. I work early mornings delivering pairing sheets and other materials to hospitality venues and information centers. Then, in the afternoon, I have the privilege of driving a cart for a PGA TOUR Radio announcer while he follows some of the most exciting on-course action. It’s an experience like no other. I LOVE it!” Established in 2005 by professional golfer Davis Love, III, the ambitious mission of the Davis Love Foundation is to help build a better future for children and their families who are at risk of poor educational, economic, social and health outcomes. They support both national and community-based programs that focus on children and

STEM, Money Matters and Project Learn. It has also helped us with some facility improvements where our staff and volunteers inspire and enable youth from all backgrounds, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, caring adults.” RSM Managing Partner and CEO Brian Becker emphasizes that’s what it’s all about. “I’ve been with RSM for more than 30 years and have been a big supporter of The RSM Classic since its inception in 2010. As we continue this cherished tradition, I look forward to joining our friends from the Davis Love Foundation, Sea Island Resort and our 1,200+ volunteers who give back to communities nationwide while building lasting relationships and memories. Giving back is what keeps bringing us back. The RSM Classic, centered on our core value of stewardship, gives back to the community playing an integral role in the tournament’s tradition.” Another opportunity to give back within the community linked to The RSM Classic is the Meet the RSM Pros event presented by the St. Simons Island Rotary Club. Now in its 12th year, Meet the RSM Pros will be held November 10, the Friday immediately preceding tournament week from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Golden Isles Green on the tournament grounds at families in need through

I made it to the Ryder Cup! It’s pretty amazing to have three people from St. Simons Island representing the U.S.: Team Captain Zach Johnson, Vice-Captain Davis Love III, and Team Member Brian Harman!
Met a very nice family, Kirsty, Erin, and Ian Stoddart, on the shuttle bus and ended up hanging out with them all day. Iain is the agent for Robert MacIntyre, one of the European golfers. We had a great time drinking Moscow mules & enjoying delicious food.

I always love running in to Capers Childs and Abby Jane Johnson, being in Rome just made it extra special!
My first bowl of pasta in Italy was penne with chicken in a pesto sauce and it was delicious!
I couldn’t be in Rome without visiting Vatican City! This is just before a tour of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica. It was ver y interesting to learn that Vatican City is the smallest country in the world. It covers just over 100 acres and is located entirely in the city of Rome.
The artwork in the Sistine Chapel was absolutely breathtaking! No photography is allowed inside, so I had to settle for a picture taken in the hallway leading up to it. One of my favorite things in the Vatican Museum was the Pietà, the famous marble representation of Mary and Jesus at his tomb sculpted by Michangelo in 1489. 32

The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheater. Construction of the Colosseum began sometime between C.E. 70 and 72 under the emperor Vespasian. The inside view of the colosseum gives you a better idea of its massive size. I still can't believe how big it is and that it was built without the use of man-made machinery.
I ran into more great friend s from the island: Alfred and Riley Sams, Patrick and Susan Dunn, and Campbell and Ann Williams, wh o were also staying at the Villa Hotel Pam phili with their children. Th ey invited me to accompany them to dinner at Emma, a wonderful restau ran t in downtown Rome. After dinner, we wa lked around found a place wit h de licious gelato. GLORY Beyond the Game
W
hen considering the big dreams that were planted as seeds in the Golden Isles, it would be impossible to overlook the amazing baseball career of Glynn Academy alumnus Adam
Wainwright. The feet of his long and lanky 6’7” frame have been placed firmly in his hometown of St. Simons Island and St. Louis, Missouri with his former team, the Cardinals, and have made quite an impression. Although Adam’s recent retirement is well-known, he’s still quite busy in the post-season and is working in the broadcast booth for FOX Sports coverage of the MLB playoffs at the time of writing, so we reached out to his mother, Nancy, to share a look back at his years playing ball. She graciously sent us loads of photos that include the days he was learning from his older brother Trey with the pitching mound and net they built in the backyard through school and community traveling teams all up to the family’s experience at the retirement ceremony held by the Cardinals before Adam’s final game with the team on October 1.
34
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
That ceremony capped a remarkable run of 18 MLB seasons, all played with the St. Louis Cardinals, for the man we affectionately call Waino or Uncle Charlie. The last two seasons have been particularly memorable. On May 15, 2022, Adam and catcher Yadier Molina recorded their 203rd win together, making them the most successful battery in MLB history. On September 14, 2022, Yadi and Adam made history again by playing their 325th game together, the most of any MLB battery, in the final year of Molina’s career. Earlier this year, Adam represented the United States in the World Baseball Classic and announced that this would be his last season with the MLB. He celebrated his 200th win in the final game he pitched for the Cardinals on September 18, only weeks before the retirement ceremony. Adam’s career has unquestionably been a resounding success. From the very beginning, it was certainly lucrative, as his initial contract when he signed with the Atlanta Braves right out of high school as the 29th pick overall in the first round of the 2000 amateur draft included a $1.25 million bonus. It was after the Braves traded Adam to the St. Louis Cardinals and he made his MLB debut in 2005 that his career really took off. If you want to measure in terms of gold, point to the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards he received in 2009 and 2013. If you want to look at silver, there’s the Silver Slugger Award he earned in 2017 as the National League’s top-hitting pitcher. If jewelry is what you go by, Adam has two World Series rings. One of these for his unforgettable pitching in 2006 when he struck out the NY Mets’ Roberto Clemente in Game 7 to earn the Cards their berth in World Series followed by their Game 5 win over the Detroit Tigers when Waino struck out Brandon Inge. While he didn’t pitch a single game of the 2011 World Series, having missed the season due to Tommy John surgery, he was still valuable to the team as a spiritual leader. Anyone who knows Adam knows that he serves as a spiritual leader every day, whether on the field or in the fields, on the bench or in a pew, at home and away— wherever those places might be. That’s what earned him another impressive piece of hardware in 2020: the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award which is bestowed annually to the MLB player who “best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.” At the time he was announced as the recipient, Adam called it “the greatest honor of my entire
career.” He was recognized in large part for the work that Big League Impact, the charity he founded in 2013 has been doing to provide basic resources, including food, clean water, medical care, and shelter, to those in need around the globe. Big League Impact and Adam, personally, have worked with Water Missions International and helped build the Ferrier Village Secondary School in Haiti, as well as supported many charitable, athletic, and educational causes in the St. Louis and Golden Isles communities. From acting as a role model for younger players to funding baseball fields to providing food and educational partnerships for students through farming, Adam is the very embodiment of values honored by the Roberto Clemente Award. Those values are at the very heart of what’s most important to Adam and the Wainwright family. It’s something Adam references in his many autographs: Bible verse Acts 20:24. He has paraphrased that scripture and summarized it as “his purpose” in many interviews over the years, saying, "My life means nothing to me unless I carry out the work given to me by God, the work of telling others the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ and God's mighty kindness and love." An active member and advocate of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Adam openly and unapologetically gives all the glory to God and expresses his gratitude for the unwavering support of his family. With the same fervor he has in the broadcast booth or in his always entertaining interviews, he shares his faith with others by speaking at churches, leading Bible studies, and through other opportunities to address Christian conferences and

community organizations. While Adam’s stats and career achievements on the diamond as an MLB pitcher and player are remarkable, there is a larger picture for him and much more he’d like to do to make the world a better place for all. Adam’s devotion to his family is equally strong. Mother Nancy and brother Trey are still right by his side as they have been since those early days when he dreamed of playing for the Braves. He and his high school sweetheart, Jenny Curry, married in 2004 and have added daughters Baylie Grace, Addison Morgan, Macy James, and Sadee Faith and son Caleb Adam to the brood since then. If you follow Uncle Charlie’s Twitter account or happen to be in the neighborhood where they’re trick-or-treating, you might have seen the family fantastic Halloween costumes they wear each year. Past themes have included Star Wars, Peter Pan, the Avengers, and Toy Story, so it’s anyone’s guess what’s next. What we really want to see is whether the newest Wainwright family member: Louie, the Lagotto Romagnolo puppy that the team gave to Adam during his retirement ceremony, gets in on the act! Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, and even if you root for the Braves, Cubs, or Yankees instead of the Cardinals, it’s been easy to be a fan of #50 for all he does and all he is. This community is so lucky to be a place that the Wainwrights call home and to have been the starting point on the path of his success, however it is measured. Thank you, Adam, for giving us a glimpse inside the world of baseball dreams come true and for encouraging big dreams in others.

Although we’re still in the midst of a festive fall enjoying oyster roasts, football, time with family, and Thanksgiving celebrations, soon our dreams will turn to those visions of sugarplums that signal Christmas is on its way. Here at EIL, we’re already looking forward to a holiday season that’s merry and bright!
O
nce the turkey dinner leftovers are put away (or maybe even before) on Thanksgiving night, the switch is flipped to turn on the Christmas lights at Spencer’s Christmas House signaling brighter than a bat signal the beginning of the holidays on St. Simons Island. Wally Spencer was a WWII veteran and much-loved member of our community. He and
his wife Urania put their home at 144 Shore Rush Drive on the map with over-the-top light displays and a colossal Christmas village. Although Wally passed away in 2020, the tradition has been continued by his family to keep his memory and spirit alive and the display remains lit nightly through Christmas. The 4th Annual Food Drive held in Wally’s honor as part of this community event will take place December 15-16 with brass choir, Kona Ice truck and appearances by Santa and the Grinch.

Enjoy a delicious buffet of morning treats during Breakfast with Santa at Oaks on the River in Darien, Saturday, December 9, from 8:00-11:00 a.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to get some photos with Ol’ St. Nick. For more information and to make reservations, visit oaksontheriverresort.com. One of our favorite and uniquely coastal traditions happens on Saturday, December 9 when Santa Arrives by Boat at the Pier on St. Simons Island. That rotund fella in the red suit gets dropped off by a harbor pilot boat for a quick visit to pose for pictures and jot down some notes on his naughty/nice list before heading back to the North Pole to pack up the sleigh for his big night. Exact time of arrival will depend on tides and weather, but it’s usually around 2:30 p.m. Southeast Georgia Health System will offer a Sensory Santa experience for children with special needs on Monday, December 11 and Tuesday, December 12 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. These are free, 15-minute private meetings with Santa in a “sensory friendly” environment at First United Methodist in Brunswick. There are no crowds, loud noises, or bright lights and no professional photographer is present, but parents are welcome to take photos. Reservations are required. The King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort’s Teddy Bear Tea from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 17 has become an annual tradition. Children are invited to attend a special holiday tea party and story time with Santa Claus. Upon arrival, each child receives a plush stuffed animal to keep as their own. This ticketed event features an assortment of festive treats and refreshments. Purchase tickets via Eventbrite, seating is limited. On Christmas Eve, Santa will continue the wonderful 70+ year tradition of riding around St. Simons Island on the festively lit, bright red antique fire truck known as Engine 32, accompanied by an escort of island elves (members of the St. Simons Civinettes and the Glynn County Volunteer Fire Department). We’ll give you more details and share the route in next month’s issue.

Presents & Prayer Operation Christmas Child, a ministry supported by the non-denominational Christian organization Samaritan’s Purse, celebrates 30 years of sharing the Good News with the distribution of over 209 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 170 countries and territories through the OCC ministry. Each and every shoebox gift demonstrates God’s love in a real way to children in need around the world. National Collection Week is November 13-20 this year and Lord of Life Lutheran Church on St. Simons Island is once again serving as a Central Drop-off. (CenterPoint Church in Brunswick is also a drop-off location.) Volunteers from the community are welcome during National Collection Week to count and pack shoeboxes. If you’d like to assist, please call Lord of Life at 912.638.4673. The church will be open for anyone to drop off shoeboxes during the following hours: Monday, November 13 - Wednesday, November 15 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m.; Thursday, November 16 and Friday, November. 17 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19 from 12 noon-3:00 p.m.; and Monday, November 20 from 9:3011:30 a.m. and 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Please participate by packing a shoebox from your closet or pick one up at the church to fill with items designated for a girl or boy, ages 2-4, ages 5-9 or ages 10-14. Examples include hairbrushes and hair accessories, soap and washcloths, toothbrushes (no toothpaste), toys, games, puzzles, books, stuffed animals, jump ropes, balls, flip-flops or shoes, pencils and notebook paper, markers or crayons, socks, hats, pajamas, shirts, etc. Basically, anything—except candy—that you can fit in a shoebox which would be useful and welcome to a child in need is acceptable. The most important thing you can add to a shoebox is prayer. You can also order items in bulk online and have them delivered directly to Lord of Life Lutheran Church (2801 Frederica Road, Saint Simons Island, GA 31522). If you do this, notify the church after placing your order by sending an email with order information to melongssi@gmail.com. Another alternative is to build a shoebox online at samaritanspurse.org/occ.

Kansas City is a city with 2.5-3 million people, and did I ever stir up a hornet’s nest simply by suggesting that customers shop and compare! After 10 years of enormous growth, I moved to a superstore at the busiest intersection in the state of Kansas. One of my favorite stories is that three brothers who owned a chain of jewelry stores came into my store together to let me know they were moving in across the street and planned to put me out of business. I replied with a laugh, “No, you are going out of business! I sell a necklace for $399, and your price is $1499 from the same Italian vendor. Who in their right mind would pay your markups?” They responded, “We have a lifetime warranty.” I pointed out that no such warranty could exist since the factory selling that necklace

FOU NDATION FOCUS
Intensity & High-Stake Consequences
I
n 2010, the Davis Love Foundation partnered with the PGA TOUR to become the Host Organization of The RSM Classic. Since that time, the tournament has raised and distributed more than $35 million to charities. That tradition continues this month with the 14th playing of The RSM Classic. There’s much anticipation and high-stake consequences surrounding the event due to changes in the structure of the TOUR schedule and the announcement of the FedExCup Fall. These changes have also generated some questions. Here are some of the answers.
What is the FedExCup Fall? The FedExCup Fall features seven tournaments that will finalize the top 125 players who will secure their PGA TOUR cards for 2024 as well as those who will have special playing opportunities. This makes these events, especially The RSM Classic, incredibly important.
Who can participate in FedExCup Fall Events? Eligibility for these events is the same as the FedExCup Regular Season. At The RSM Classic, the top 156 committing players from the Priority Ranking are eligible to compete.
Why would players in different categories commit to FedExCup Fall Events? • Players ranking 1-30: chance to win and accumulate Official World Golf Ranking points • Players ranking 31-50: (above) and with a win, earn a two-year PGA TOUR exemption and spots in the Masters Tournament and PGA Championship • Players ranking 51-70: (above) and exemptions to three Signature Events in 2024: The Sentry (with a win) and two others by finishing Nos. 51-60 in the FedExCup standings (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Genesis Invitational) • Players ranking 71-125: (above) and fighting to stay in the top 125 • Players ranking 126 and beyond: (above) and working to move into top 125 * PGA TOUR Signature Events are limited-field events offering increased purses and FedExCup points.
What benefits will winners of FedExCup Fall events receive? • 2-year exemption on PGA TOUR • 500 FedExCup points • Official World Golf Ranking points • Spots in The Sentry, THE PLAYERS Championship, the Masters Tournament and the PGA Championship
Why is The RSM Classic Important? The RSM Classic provides players with one final attempt to keep or gain status on the PGA TOUR. Come experience the drama and watch the future unfold. Tickets are available at RSMClassic.com. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. @TheRSMClassic; #RSMGivesBack #RSMClassic. In its first thirteen years, The RSM Classic, hosted by Davis Love III, has raised more than $35 million to support local and national charities. The 2023 PGA TOUR event is November 13-19 at Sea Island Golf Club. For partnership information, regardless of the size of your business, contact John McKenzie, Director of Sales, at jmckenzie@dlovefoundation.com or visit rsmclassic.com.

Cottage 342, W. Seventeenth Street, Sea Island Occupying most of the 17th Street block, this prized and revered property extends from Sea Island Drive all the way to the marsh. For families who enjoy staying together and being close to one another, Lune de Miel (Cottage 342) is lovingly placed on the land with the precision of an artist, an apt metaphor given the materials, furnishings and appointments dating from the 17th century. The enchanting grounds contain a moated gazebo with Louis XIII French limestone mantel (circa 1672), alfresco grill, pergola, 3 pools, bath house with laundry room, basketball court, chess court, Dovecote (circa 16th-17th century), circular fire pit, putting green, chipping tee box, Bocce Ball court, shuffleboard and long northwesterly marsh vistas. Twelve bedrooms (9 with fireplaces), each with their own personality, 17 fireplaces, an Irish pub with 17th century Roman carved black slate fireplace. The English Victorian pine front bar has the original mahogany counter top (circa 1849) from a tavern in Birmingham, England. The back bar is from Fritzingers Hotel in Coopersburg, PA (circa 1883). Walk-in cooler. The Game Room/Parlor has an 1886 Brunswick “Jewel” pool table and a Rock-ola maple and hardwood shuffleboard table. Adding to the authenticity of the home’s appointments, a 19th century bronze and ormolu French chandelier adorns the brick lined Wine Cellar. A solid European red oak and hand forged iron door (circa 1850) leads to the Theatre with rare Italian barrel-vaulted ceiling (circa 17th century). The family room limestone fireplace (circa 1600-1750) is from the Chateau Fountain in Sologne, France and belonged to the family of the wife of former French President Jacques Chirac. Indeed, this is a grand residence yet with a warm, comfortable loving ambience. Lune de Miel is the sequel of a couple’s spark of beautiful love where lasting memories were made. $17,995,000

efore the turn of the twentieth century, Brunswick and the Golden Isles began to attract tourists, who traveled long distances by train and by steamboat to reach coastal Georgia. As business picked up, large-scale lodging establishments dotted Glynn County’s landscape: Jekyll Island’s eponymous club welcomed the world’s wealthy, the Hotel St. Simons provided guests easy access to the beach, and Brunswick’s Oglethorpe Hotel was a point of pride for both residents and visitors alike. Improved roads and popularity of automobile travel brought about a whole new era in America’s—and coastal Georgia’s— tourism landscape. In the 1910s, as intrepid tourists began to set out on cross-country car journeys, they sometimes found themselves between towns and without a place to stay for the night. Some simply camped by the side of the road, and enterprising locals soon took notice, setting up “tourist camps” meant to cater to the passerby’s sense of convenience. Nationally-organized highways, like the Dixie Highway and Quebec-Miami Highway, ran through Glynn County in the late 1910s and 1920s, providing tourist camps with a steady stream of business. The introduction of numbered highways like U.S. 17 and U.S. 25, along with the post-World War II economic and baby boom, brought even more tourists flooding to the Golden Isles. By now, many of them desired more amenities than a roadside campsite could provide, and once again, resourceful locals took up the challenge. Along any well-traveled tourist thoroughfare, especially the highways, businesses originally called “tourist courts” or “motor hotels” provided tired travelers with private lodging, on-site restaurants, and a much-needed dose of air conditioning. For convenience, some businesses even shortened their names—and “motor hotels” became known as “motels. In the motel’s mid-century heyday, examples up and down U.S. 17 leading into Brunswick included the Oleander Court and Seabreeze Motor Court, seen here on postcards likely sold at the respective businesses. The causeways brought motel-ready tourists to St. Simons and Jekyll islands, too. Pictured here are the Sailfish Motel “By the Sea” on St. Simons and the Jekyll Estates Motel.
