Editor’s Letter My dearest Elegant brides, You’re about to enter the wonderful (and challenging) world of planning a wedding and we are here to provide you with all the necessary tools and inspiration to make it happen. While choosing a dress, picking out flowers and tasting cakes might rank high on your arduous list of things to do, nothing (arguably) compares to selecting the venue. For this reason, we want to get you excited about where to host your wedding as much as picking out a theme or customizing invitations with our “Spectacular Settings” issue. Dream of welcoming guests to a rustic vineyard, romantic forest or urban skyscraper? Let us take you there with our stunning selection of style shoots. As you flip through the pages of this Elegant Wedding Magazine, you will be provided with unconventional spaces filled with character as shown in our “Salvador Nights” (p. 76), “Woodland Escape” (p. 152) and “Garden Glam” (p.52) editorials among others. As you embark on this beautiful journey, we invite you to find the very best inspiration and vendors Toronto has to offer for the biggest day of your life.

Wedding Gown Trends Twice a year, New York Bridal Fashion Week attracts the best designers in the industry. While they all bring their own flavour to the runway, here are some of the main trends for this year. by Karine Robidas

24

Jumpsuits

Minimalistic

Made of feminine lace or directly inspired by the gentlemen’s wardrobe, jumpsuits are everywhere this season. Choose a plunging neckline for a sexy effect and pair it with a regal cape for the “wow” factor.

Call it the “Meghan Markle Effect,” minimalistic gowns are in full bloom this season. Choose an A-line skirt with spaghetti straps for that ‘90s touch, long sleeves for a sleek look or ornate it up with an oversized bow to add a whimsical touch.

Metallic & Heavy Appliqués

Lavender

Once again this season, flower appliqués are taking over the bridal industry. While most were white on white in previous years, this time it is all about metallic. Gold, bronze or silver, it’s time to let it shine!

Lavender is one of the numerous pastel colours that made its way to the catwalk. Perfect for an edgy but still appropriate look, pastel dresses are here to stay.

Capes

Collars

Worn over a ball gown for a dramatically regal effect or trailing behind a jumpsuit for a modern twist, capes are a great option for brides who don’t want to wear a veil but still want to make a grand entrance.

While plunging necklines are still very present, high necklines bring a refreshing twist to the bridal industry. Choose a sophisticated lace or a sheer material to delicately showcase your collarbone.

Flower Girl Guide by Christina Rowan Including one (or several) adorable flower girls in your bridal party will no doubt put a smile on everyone’s face during the ceremony. Whether it’s your niece, a friend’s child or your own daughter, chances are the little darling will be thrilled to accept the acclaimed position. To prepare your sweetheart for the big day, here are a few tips to make sure she feels pretty, relaxed but more importantly, excited to take on the task.

Buy the Dress

Perhaps the most motivating part of being assigned a flower girl is getting the chance to try on dresses. Let’s face it, the moment she slips one on she feels like a princess. It’s up to you to decide if you want the dress to remain white or reflect a colour associated with your theme. Either way, what matters most is she can walk and sit in it comfortably.

Accessorize

Want to give your flower girls an accessory they’ll adore? Fashion your mini-me with a flower crown or bouquet similar to your existing arrangements. Better yet, give your flower girl a basket or cone containing petals she can toss on her way down the aisle. Not a fan of flowers? Simply accent her dress with a silk ribbon sash and hand her a fancy wand she can carry so she isn’t empty-handed.

Assign her Duties

Without making your flower girl too nervous, make sure you take her aside before the wedding letting her know what she has to do. Present her with a children’s book about flower girls to get her eager for the role and spend some time rehearsing. If you have more than one, have them meet beforehand so they’re familiar with each other. Once the groomsmen and bridesmaids have taken their place at the altar, it’s their time to shine. Assign one of your maids to look after her and tell them where to sit once their job is complete. At the end of the day you want her to be happy!

Kristin & Brett June 8, 2018

How They Met | Brett and Kristin (both lawyers), met working at the same firm; however didn’t get to interact much since they were situated in different departments. What ultimately brought them together was frequent run-ins at the gym on the rowing machine—both rowed varsity in university at different times for different schools. While most people using the rowing machine would hop on and off after five minutes, Brett and Kristin would use it for 20 or 30 minutes. Eventually the two coordinated their workouts and trained together. After about a month, Brett asked Kristin to grab a drink with him after work. From that first date, both knew there was something special.

The Bride Says…

“You will understandably want everything to be perfect on your wedding day, but recognize that if things aren’t exactly as planned, that’s OK. In the end, what you remember more than anything else is the way you felt that day. Focus on the joy you feel about getting married and being surrounded by your family and friends.”

The Ceremony | Having a meaningful ceremony was important to Brett and Kristin. Together they decided to write their own vows and incorporate what is considered a ring-warming ceremony whereby the wedding bands are passed from guest to guest as a way of sending wishes to the couple. The service took place outdoors under a beautiful draped arbour framed with white roses and greenery.

The Reception & Decor | Once the ceremony was completed, guests were treated inside the reception (held at the same venue) to an antipasto plate followed by pasta and an entrĂŠe selected the day of the wedding. Brett and Kristin wanted their theme to reflect classic, whimsical, romance so family-style tables were fixed with white linens, crawling vines and simplistic jar centrepieces filled with white blooms. The result was a refreshing indoor/outdoor scene that perfectly complemented the space. Amy Cheshire Photography captured the whole day exquisitely.

How They Met | Anthony and Shannon met in January of 2009 through mutual friends when neither was looking or expecting to be in a relationship. What went from hanging out as friends quickly became a case of true, long-lasting love that seemed meant to be from the beginning. Eight years later, when Shannon took Anthony to New York City to celebrate his 30th birthday, he caught her completely off guard and proposed in front of the Saks Fifth Avenue Christmas window.

ELEGANT EDDING.CA 45

The Bride Says…

“I believe in true love and love everlasting. I was often asked why I was waiting so long to get married. My answer would always be the same. Why would I leave someone I love unconditionally just because they weren’t ready yet, in hopes of finding that kind of love again? The moral of the story is always follow your heart. In the words of Cinderella, ‘A dream is a wish your heart makes’.”

photography:

46

Quarum Photo + Video | Quarum.com

The Ceremony | By far, the ceremony was what bride Shannon looked forward to the most. After waiting 10 years to marry the love of her love, she finally got to meet him at the altar and say, “I do.” During the traditional Catholic ceremony when she walked down the aisle to “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri on piano, everyone could truly feel the love. The Reception | With a one-of-a-kind theme and almost 600 guests in attendance, Anthony and Shannon’s reception was nothing short of spectacular. Planned by Michelle Garber of Fab Fête Event Planning Boutique, the celebration began with an antipasto bar for cocktail hour that included a variety of scrumptious canapés: oysters, king crab and lamb chops among others. Once the reception commenced, photography:

guests indulged in a four-course meal and later were treated to a cheesecake and exotic fruit bar in addition to a gelato cart. The Decor | Anthony and Shannon were in complete awe when they saw their decor provided by R5 Event Design for the first time. Walls were covered from head to toe in black draping; centrepieces ranged from wisteria, cherry blossom and orchid arrangements; and the breathtaking head table backdrop featured over 500 candles. The only way the bride could describe it was “a dark and magical evening!” In the midst of all the beauty was a white and gold dance floor for a breath of fresh air, alongside fluffy white clouds suspended above the newlywed’s sweetheart table. Quarum Photo + Video elegantly captured the essence of the entire dreamlike occasion.

12-Month Wedding Planning Guide

You’ve said, “yes” to the love of your life and now you’re overwhelmed at the thought of how much there is to plan. Where will I hold the ceremony? How many people should I invite? Where will I get my dress? Planning a wedding takes time, organization and most of all patience, which is why we’ve come up with a 12-month guide to help you plan your nuptials stress-free! by Christina Rowan

10-12 Months Before 2-3 Months Before Announce your engagement: Let your family and friends in on the excitement by having a professional photo session done, personal website made or picture of your shiny new ring shared on social media. Set a date: Think about which season you would prefer, what range of dates would work well for you and then start scouting venues for availability. Develop a budget: Sit down with your new fiancé and prioritize which elements of your wedding will receive more attention. You may not be able to work out every detail at once, but you can at least lay down the foundation. Compile your guest list: Take your venues and budget into consideration when picking those you would like to attend. Do you want an intimate ceremony with less people and then a party reception to follow?

7-9

Months Before

Shop for your dress: Hit up the best bridal boutiques in the city for the perfect dress to say, “yes” to. Try on as many as you need to until you have the “Aha!” moment. Don’t step outside your budget! Pick a theme: Flip through the pages of Elegant Wedding magazine and start selecting colour palettes, flowers and decor you would like to centre your wedding theme around. Hire vendors: Do your research and recruit the best wedding planner, photographer, florist, musician and caterer. Here you will have to decide which professional ranks highest to lowest on your budget plan. Form your wedding party: It’s your turn to propose to your bridesmaids and groomsmen. Show them how much you appreciate their friendship by asking them to stand alongside you from the start of your wedding to the very end. The sooner you ask, the better. Create a gift registry: Make it easy for your guests to choose a wedding gift by signing up for one or two bridal registries. Keep the price range open so guests have the option to splurge or save.

4-6 Months Before

Pick a cake: Stimulate your sweet tooth by going for a tasting with your fiancé. The colours, flavours and design choices truly are endless! Order invitations: Customize your own crest or select a signature suite that will hint at the theme you’ve selected. Your guests won’t be able to say no. Plan your honeymoon: Spend the following weeks together as a married couple on a breathtaking beach, in a villa secluded from the world or backpacking through Europe. Reserve, reserve! Book officiant: Whether you’re getting married in a church or at a hall, you’ll need someone to lead the procession. Research a few officiants before you commit to one by reading reviews online and meeting in person. Reserve for rehearsal dinner: Find a location where your family, close friends and wedding party will gather for the night before the big day. Here you can hand out your gifts to your bridesmaids and groomsmen.

50

Save the date: You want people to witness your nuptials don’t you? Make it official with your guests by sending out the beautiful invitations you’ve ordered/ created. Book makeup and hair: Trial different beauty looks with a hairdresser and makeup artist. Make a day of it and secure the look you want for the big day. Order wedding rings: Accompany your new sparkling engagement ring with a wedding band that matches your partners. This will give you time for resizing and engraving. Get favours: As a way of saying thank you to all the guests who attend, prepare a little something for them to go home with.

1Month Before

Solidify seating plan: Call guests who haven’t RSVP’d, make cuts and create a final headcount for the caterer and venue. Call your vendors: Call your photographer, caterer, florist and baker to confirm everything is a go. Any last minute requests will need to be made now. Order rentals: Refer to your venue, guest list and desired theme before renting chairs, tables, lighting and any necessary decor for the ceremony and reception. Get a marriage license: Since the process can take a few days, give yourself enough time to gather the appropriate documents before heading to city hall for the marriage license. Write vows: Channel your inner Shakespeare and jot down the best things about your partner. What comes from the heart is undeniable. There won’t be a dry eye in the place. Pick up your dress: Go for a final fitting, make sure any alterations came out just as they should and keep that dress on lockdown. No liquids allowed within 10 feet!

How They Met | Once upon a time (six years ago) an Englishman named Alex married a Canadian named Tanya. At their wedding, Tanya’s cousin Megan (Canadian) met Alex’s brother James (English). At their wedding, Megan’s cousin Brittney met Mark (the last single Englishman) and they fell in love the minute they met.

The Bride Says… “I never understood couples I’ve worked with before who said their wedding day was over so quickly until I had my own. When you’re in the craziness, the day honestly whips by and when it’s all over you’re a little sad. Make sure you take a moment to appreciate the day with each other. Go for a walk alone, have a private conversation at your seats, something to stop and soak up how special everything is.”

The Ceremony | Brittney and Mark wanted something natural for their ceremony. Since Mark loves apple orchards and one of their favourite places is Langdon Hall, they decided to get married right in front of the apple tree where they’ve shared so many memories. The wedding was kept fairly small (88 guests attended) to ensure an intimate gathering and cocktail hour took place before the ceremony so that everyone could celebrate prior to sitting down. The Reception | With an intimate dinner party in mind for the reception, Brittney and Mark selected long tables and hundreds of candles to make the space feel cosy and romantic. Guests raved over the food and all the favours were personalized to each attendee: a mini bottle of alcohol and cannabis chocolate bar.

The Decor | As the owner and lead planner of Inspire Event Rental & Design, Brittney drew inspiration from her and her new hubby’s personal lives for the overall decor scheme. Both big fans of Ted Baker (most of the groom’s closet consists of pants, shirts, suits and socks from the beloved English brand), the couple opted to include as many Ted Baker-inspired floral patterns as possible. From the bridesmaid’s attire to the flower girl dresses, table runners and place cards, all reflected floral print. The flower arrangements especially were built and styled just like a wild Ted Baker floral print. To honour the place they first met, Brittney and Mark also included black pottery, hand-painted skulls and other items from Oaxaca, Mexico.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER

How They Met | Shenette and Jimmy met in spring of 2012. She was doing her daily coffee run to Starbucks and he was working construction on the building. What started out as routine run-ins everyday quickly became shared glances and smiles here and there. One week later, Shenette and Jimmy ran into each other again, this time at a friend’s BBQ. According to their mutual friend, Jimmy was dying to talk to the girl he kept seeing at the coffee shop. That day they were finally introduced. After three years of dating, on September 12, 2015, Jimmy took Shenette out to one of their favourite restaurants by the beach. They went for their usual walk along the water afterwards and sat on a blanket on the sand where Jimmy had hidden the ring box earlier. To ensure it was kept safe, some of his friends kept watch close by so that by the time they got there, he could dig the ring out and ask Shenette to marry him. She burst into tears and happily said “yes.”

The Ceremony | Both Shenette and Jimmy’s cultures were honoured in the fairytale ceremony that took place at the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Greek traditions (for the groom) such as the crowning ritual and ceremonial walk were incorporated, as well as Filipino traditions (for the bride) such as primary and secondary sponsors called upon to participate in the veil, cord and candle lighting rituals. To make the aisle look as whimsical as possible, 20 gorgeous pink cherry blossom trees were used to decorate the space alongside fresh florals from Royal Orchid Florist. Everyone was in awe at how breathtaking it was. After the ceremony, the newlyweds released 37 white doves and took off in a white horse and carriage.

ELEGANT EDDING.CA 69

The Gifts | Since Shenette truly wanted to have an over the top Cinderella wedding, not one detail was missed. When it came to the gifts, it was important that all 170 guests left with something special: each received a Vera Wang digital frame. During the reception, to entice all the men and women to take part in the garter and bouquet toss, the couple announced that two 32GB Apple iPad’s would be given away to the winners. Later in the evening, various Swarovski figurines were also awarded at random by raffle. As for Shenette and Jimmy’s entourage consisting of 37 people, each was given a gift as well. Groomsmen received Remy Martin XO Excellence Cognac with two Waterford crystal glasses; male primary sponsors received Cristal Brut Vintage Champagne 2009; and male secondary sponsors received Remy Martin 1738 Accord Royal Cognac with two Waterford crystal glasses. Finally, all the women in the entourage received a fullsize Royal Doulton figurine signed by Michael Doulton. flowers:

“The colour palette consisted of coral, pink and gold and directly inspired every impeccable floral arrangement created by Royal Orchid Florist.”

The Decor | The theme that Shenette wanted to achieve with her decor was “modern fairytale.” The colour palette consisted of coral, pink and gold and directly inspired every impeccable fresh floral arrangement created by Royal Orchid Florist. The moment guests walked into the reception at The Ritz-Carlton Toronto they were greeted by a custom 12-foot tall floral fountain (placed in the middle of the name card table) and given a mini bouquet of flowers. Lavish pink linens covered every table, paper flowers were incorporated on almost every chair and tables featured tall round centrepieces on gold stands. At the bride and groom’s head table, a mass of pink floral arches ran the entire length for a show-stopping textured backdrop. flowers:

To guarantee every guest was in awe upon arrival, two lion ice sculptures were placed at the doors. However, those weren’t the only ice sculptures included. In fact a total of 21 ice sculptures were placed throughout the room: 10 swan-shaped ice sculptures along the entrance aisle; two swan-shaped sculptures at the dessert table; and a 24-foot custom “U” shaped ice bar topped with four ice vases, a heart-shaped ice sculpture with two sitting doves and a custom lion luge ice sculpture where guests had the luxury of having their drinks poured through the lion. There to cap the night off in style were 12 Brazilian samba dancers for entertainment. It all added up to the most miraculous evening Shenette could have ever dreamed of.

How They Met | A shopping mall love story unfolded as Marianna and Andre met while working their part-time jobs. Marianna worked at a Greek fast-food restaurant, while Andre worked at a skate shop. As if by fate and fervour, Andre’s hunger pangs carried him to the food court and into the arms of love; he went for the Gyro wraps and kept going back for the girl. Eventually the two realized they went to the same university and even had mutual friends, allowing them the opportunity to grow their relationship. The Ceremony | The couple decided to honour their grandparents by marrying in a Greek Orthodox Church with close family, friends and a massive 16person wedding party. Interestingly enough, the church was unfinished and under construction, which Marianna felt was a great metaphor for marriage itself. Things are always changing, growing, “under construction,” and the best way to move forward is to always communicate and experience life together as a family and community. linens, rentals & decor: Creations by Gitta | CreationsbyGitta.ca

ELEGANT EDDING.CA 75

The Reception | Andre and Marianna can summarize their reception in three words: delicious, heartwarming and entertaining. Delectable food was had (the main course consisted of filet mignon and Cornish hen); a tremendous amount of love was felt all around by family and friends; and the night closed with an incredible party on the dance floor. Thanks to Little Blue Lemon, the entire celebration was captured beautifully and will be treasured for years to come.

The Decor | An eclectic decor scheme mixing old with new was selected to bring Andre and Marianna’s industrial theme to life. Bold burgundy florals were paired with delicate greenery for the centrepieces and bouquets. Meanwhile Creations by Gitta provided linens, rentals and decor to push the industrial theme with metallic lanterns and a head table backdrop designed with hanging Edison light bulbs. The bride also contributed certain components such as invitation calligraphy and the seating chart. In the end, the newlyweds could not have imagined a more breathtaking setup.

How They Met | Vaughan and Alysha met over Christmas holidays back in 2014 through an online dating site called OkCupid.com. Vaughan was away visiting family in Nova Scotia and Alysha was at a family’s house near Toronto. Turned out they lived two blocks away from each other. The Ceremony | Simple, elegant and quick was how Vaughan and Alysha wanted their intimate outdoor ceremony. White draping was hung from a large tree to frame the altar, meanwhile wine barrels topped with flowers decorated the start of the aisle. To keep things personal, the couple

wrote their own vows and exited down the aisle to DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win” to kick off the start of a great party. The Reception | For the reception, Vaughan and Alysha wanted guests to have a memorable experience that included amazing food, drinks and lots of laughter. Cold vodka shots were taken while chanting “Sto Lat!” (Polish for cheers) to honour the groom’s Polish heritage, and plenty of bubbles were included in the theme to honour the bride’s Italian heritage. Several members of the bridal party shared hilarious stories for the speeches. es.

The Decor | The goal of Vaughan and Alysha’s decor was to reflect the natural beauty of the vineyard setting. The reception took place under a tent lined with twinkling lights, which at night turned into a magical retreat for the couple’s first dance. Along the family-style tables where guests were seated, centrepieces consisted of crawling greenery and mason jars filled with white flowers. Westend Studio captured every moment with ease.

Tanya & James VOYAGE TO BURG UNDY

Jason Richard Photography | JasonRichard.ca | 289-923-2526

How They Met | Tanya and James met in spring of 2009 on a camping trip with mutual work colleagues—both worked at Sport Chek/Atmosphere at the time. Their love blossomed under the stars and continued to grow that weekend forward. In June 2017, James proposed to Tanya on a vineyard in Burgundy, France. The Ceremony | With a love for the outdoors, Tanya and James wanted their ceremony to have a spectacular view that was close enough to the city to ensure all guests could attend (especially James’ 94-year-old

grandparents). Family friends played live music on the piano and flute and a close friend officiated. The ceremony was short and sweet, just as they wanted. The Reception | To fully enjoy and celebrate their wedding with guests, Tanya and James chose to have a later ceremony followed by cocktail hour on the beautiful outdoor patio overlooking the ravine. Multiple fire pits lit the terrace for dancing and mingling while the pianist and flutist continued to play music in the background.

ELEGANT EDDING.CA 95

The Decor | The goal for Tanya and James’ decor scheme was to include as many nods to their engagement in Burgundy, France, as possible. Wine bottles were used for table numbers; favours were personalized wine corks; and the designated burgundy colour palette influenced the bridesmaid’s dresses, invitations, groomsmen ties and pocket squares. As for the centrepieces, simple white roses were combined with floating candles. Jason Richard Photography captured every moment beautifully.

How They Met | Daniel and Sofia first met at a high school party. Although the two attended different schools growing up, they had friends in common. Years after meeting, during the summer of 2011, their love story took off when they ended up as teammates on a recreational beach volleyball team. Daniel’s on-the-court skills impressed Sofia so much she couldn’t help but develop a crush. Over the summer the two grew quite close thanks to mutual friends who spent almost every weekend together. Later that year when a visit to a friend’s cottage was planned, Daniel and Sofia solidified their bond by talking, laughing and flirting well into the early morning hours. That night, both realized they wanted to be much more than friends.

The Ceremony | The St. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church, where Sofia grew up attending every Sunday in her youth, was where she and Daniel decided to host their ceremony. Since the church not only held a special place in Sofia’s heart but Daniel’s as well (the two attended mass together shortly after becoming a couple), they immediately gravitated towards it after getting engaged as an appropriate place to exchange their vows. The ceremony was simple, intimate and included close family and friends. To this day, Daniel and Sofia consider the moment their eyes met at opposite ends of the aisle one of their most cherished memories.

ELEGANT EDDING.CA 101

The Reception | Sofia and Daniel fell in love with Château Le Parc the moment they first visited. Not only were staff members very accommodating and willing to work with the couple, they helped turn their vision into reality. Cocktail hour took place inside the exquisite courtyard with a variety of sparkling drinks and hors d’oeuvres, while lush greenery and cherry blossoms decorated the space. Sofia and Daniel’s Italian heritage inspired the menu; music consisted of live performers mixing classic and contemporary tunes; and late night serving stations (including a Popsicle bar) were introduced after hours for guests to feast on.

The Decor | When the hall doors opened to the reception, guests flowed into a candlelit dining area filled with oversized white flowers and greenery by Creations by Gitta Event Design & Floral Decor. The stage and dance floor were selected in white to ground the space and create welcoming focal points, while all floral arrangements consisted of an assortment of large seasonal flowers in various shades of white for dimension and texture. To fill the setting with light, Sofia and Daniel opted to place hundreds of candles and fixtures at alternating heights throughout. One of the highlights of the room was the couple’s head table, which featured a rich white floral runner across the table and onto the floor, a canopy of white flowers above and floating candles. Thanks to the bride’s sister Anna (lead planner at Anna Lacivita Designs) every detail was considered and the vision was executed perfectly.

The Bride Says… “When people say your wedding day is going to be the best day of your life, they’re not lying. But as amazing as it is, it goes by so fast! Make sure you steal a few moments throughout your special day, when it is just the two of you…be present and keep your focus on each other, especially when you’re walking down the aisle! Look at your partner and nowhere else and I promise, it will be a moment that you will never forget. Most importantly, remember that it’s just one day-don’t sweat the small stuff and have fun! The best is yet to come!”

Colleen & James September 30, 2016

How They Met | James and Colleen met at a local pub during the summer of 2010. For Colleen it was just another night out after work where she, her maid of honour and a few of her coworkers decided to stop in for a drink. James was the only one who she hadn’t met, and although he was sitting at the complete opposite end of the bar, she was immediately drawn to him. Shortly after, Colleen’s maid of honour set them up on a date, which resulted in a concert on Toronto Island that Colleen had tickets for. Years later, she found out James never really liked the band. He simply went to be with her.

The Bride Says…

“Don’t ever let anything–big or small–come in the way of your happiness on the day of your wedding. I know every bride has probably heard this many times before, but I can’t stress it enough. This day that you’ve dreamed of and worked hard for will come to an end in the blink of an eye. You and your other

The Ceremony | A deep appreciation for the romanticism of nature is what ultimately influenced the whimsical atmosphere of James and Colleen’s wedding. The ceremony took place in a private outdoor space, which was made perfect with string lights and large planters full of greenery already at the venue. However, to incorporate a personal touch, James’ father hand-crafted a beautiful arbour which posed as the focal point of the altar. The Reception | James and Colleen were absolutely stunned by the botanical dream that was created for their reception. To enhance the natural charm of the venue, hanging floral structures and candles were designed above tables, ultimately achieving the whimsical, forest feel they were looking for. Coupled with

great food and an incredible DJ, the night was everything the couple could have asked for and more. The Decor | Smokey tones such as sage and heather purple were combined with romantic hints of blush for the decor. In keeping with the couple’s love of nature and all things green, emphasis was placed on greenery for the florals. A number of DIY elements were also added such as crepe paper anemones for the place cards and menus. Zsuzsi Pal Photography exceeded their expectations in capturing every beautiful moment of the day.

How They Met | Steve and Cindy met online through eHarmony. At the time, both had never tried a dating website and were uncertain it would work. However, once Steve and Cindy saw each other’s preferences and interests through their profiles, they felt they knew one another before ever even engaging in conversation. Since that first interaction, their life together has been a fairytale and they couldn’t be happier they decided to give online dating a try.

The Bride Says…

“The day will fly by, enjoy and embrace every moment of it. It’s going to be one of the best days in your life.”

The Ceremony | The couple hosted a traditional western ceremony overlooking the water for their small and intimate wedding of 80 guests. With tall glass windows stretching from the floor to the ceiling in the venue and breathtaking views of Lake Ontario, the couple saw no better place to exchange their vows. The most memorable moment for Cindy was walking down the aisle to “Beautiful in White” by Westlife, looking into the eyes of her future husband, surrounded by loved ones. The Reception | The space where the ceremony took place was transformed into a warm and welcoming setting for the reception. During cocktail hour, a string quartet played instrumental versions of popular pop songs, and later at the reception, music was switched to jazz. For the main entrée, guests chose between beef tender-

loin, chicken supreme, Arctic char and a market-inspired vegetarian meal. Once the dance floor opened up, a variety of pop songs ranging from K-Pop to old school songs played. The Decor | Steve and Cindy wanted to have an elegant and romantic theme for their wedding. Blush and white floral arrangements combined hydrangea, roses, stock flowers and textured greenery for centrepieces on guest tables and the gorgeous garland on the head table. Meanwhile for the decor, gold mercury votive candleholders were accented by floating candles. Motion D Photography captured every dreamy detail exquisitely.

The Bride Says…

“I had a great team of vendors and this day went smoothly because of them!”

The Ceremony | In honour of the bride and groom’s heritage, traditional Filipino customs took place at the ceremony involving secondary sponsors assigned to each of the following roles: bible, veil, cord and coins. Also in the ceremony were principal sponsors (considered godparents) who were given the opportunity to walk into the ceremony and later sign the document witnessing the marriage. The Reception | When it came to the reception held at Crystal Fountain Event Venue, it was important to Kane and Jamie that guests were entertained the entire night. A live guitarist played and sang for the first dance; a fun photo booth was set up; and guests took part in the traditional Filipino money dance where everybody pins money on the newlyweds while dancing. Later in the evening, the

groom surprised the bride by singing to her and the bride surprised everyone by changing into a second dress. The Decor | Lisa K Events designed exactly the clean and monochromatic theme Jamie and Kane were looking for. Guest tables consisted of tall white cherry blossom centrepieces atop gold vases, while the couple’s sweetheart table featured a mass drapery backdrop with lilac flowers and gold candlesticks. To influence the decor with more gold details, guests referred to a giant gold frame seating chart to take their seats and the newlyweds cut into a gorgeous five-tier wedding cake embossed with gold.

Vanessa & Nick July 28, 2018

How They Met | Nick and Vanessa attended the same high school together in 2010 but only crossed paths in college the following year. They became friends and soon after realized they shared a special connection worthy of a serious relationship. The two went on to date for six years before Nick took Vanessa out to dinner and proposed after a romantic helicopter ride around Toronto.

“With all the preparations leading up to this special day, it is important to acknowledge the experience along the way! What’s meant to be will be and you shouldn’t stress over the little things, it will turn out to be your perfect day no matter what.”

The Ceremony | The couple decided to say, “I do” in front of family and friends at Vanessa’s childhood church. During the Roman Catholic mass that took place, a live singer as well as instrumentalists playing the piano and violin provided music. One of the most memorable moments for the bride and groom during the ceremony was when their mothers took part in the tradition of lighting unity candles. The Reception | Nick and Vanessa hosted a lively Assyrian (groom) and Italian (bride) reception to 360 guests. Once they entered the hall, all of the guests lined up and created a circle around them dancing in traditional fashion while drummers lead the line. Everyone indulged in delicious food from start to

finish with an antipasto bar, five-course meal and midnight table comprised of traditional desserts and Italian pastries. The Decor | The atmosphere that RL Designs Inc. created for Nick and Vanessa’s reception was a magical fairytale. White and blush florals filled the candlelit room with fragrance and beauty, while crystal candelabra, silver tableware and sequin tablecloths added a touch of sparkle. At the couple’s head table, a breathtaking backdrop consisted of blush draping and three white wainscot panels decorated with orchids, hydrangeas and roses. At the centre of the room to ground it all was a personalized dance floor monogrammed with the couple’s names.

Stacie & Izzy Ju ly 2 6 , 2 0 1 8

How They Met | Izzy and Stacie went to the same high school but never spoke a word to each other. Four years later, they met officially at a New Year’s party. They kept in touch by writing letters (that’s right, hand-written letters!), fell in love in the process, and have been together ever since.

The Bride Says…

“You can spend one year planning ‘the perfect day,’ but none of it matters when you look at your loved one when you say ‘I do.’ In that moment the world disappears, everything fades into the background. You cannot see, you cannot hear, all you do is feel.”

The Ceremony | With Izzy and Stacie both hopeful romantics, the ceremony was the most important part. To emphasize their love for each other, they used the unlimited power of nature as their inspiration. Hanging flowers and vines throughout the chuppah posed as the crucial design feature when they said their vows. The ceremony set the mood and theme for the rest of the wedding, transporting guests into an enchanted garden of romance and timeless elegance. The Reception | Elaborating on the theme of enchantment, the reception was planned to be intimate but full of fun. With music selected as an essential facet of the wedding, Izzy and Stacie had a nine-person band and a DJ to ensure that

music was playing at all times. Guests enjoyed fresh cuisine with notes of summer to reflect the season, and when the first dance took place outside, everyone held a sparkler. Ever After Photographers captured the entire day seamlessly. The Decor | The designated colour palette for Izzy and Stacie’s reception decor was green, cream, ivory and gold. Tables consisted of distressed wood harvest tables (family-style), ornate cream-coloured lace runners with chargers and stemware featuring gold detailing. As for the florals, plenty of centrepieces lined the tables alongside candles, while hanging installations were draped over tables incorporating the same vines and orchids seen in the chuppah for the ceremony.

Kaitlyn & Philip August 26, 2017

The Cerermony | Short and sweet is exactly the kind of ceremony Kaitlyn and Philip wanted. To make things personal, each decided to write their own vows, which were later read by a longtime family friend. Grand draping intertwined with greenery decorated the altar, meanwhile candlelight and string lighting created a truly dreamy atmosphere for everyone in attendance.

The Bride Says…

“Don’t worry the day of. What will be will be. Just remember what the day is about: You marrying the love of your life and not the small little details. Enjoy every moment and make sure to take time to step back both as husband and wife and look around. You did it. Everyone is here for you two.”

The Reception | Once the ceremony was complete, the venue was transformed into a beautiful rustic setting for the reception. The couple decided to play off wood elements found inside by including a wooden frame seating chart, lanterns scattered throughout and plenty of greenery and blush hues for the florals. In the end, Kaitlyn and Philip were ecstatic with the way Nova Markina Photography captured their whimsical yet simplistic wedding.

Shannon & Michael A MEDIEVAL FANTASY

146

photography:

MPSG Weddings | MPSGWeddings.com | 647-692-6774

How They Met | Shannon and Michael met at an event almost a decade ago. The moment they saw each other from across the room, they attracted like magnets. Once Michael had found out Shannon’s name, he went over to introduce himself. Suffice it to say, they didn’t separate the rest of the evening. He touched her hand several times to make his feelings known, and when Shannon got ready to leave, he stopped her at the door. She ended up leaving without giving him her number, however he found her online and two weeks later she agreed to go on a date. The Ceremony | Standing in front of each other at the altar, Shannon and Michael felt as though they had crossed both the start and finish line. Together they’ve been through life-altering events that can tear a couple apart, so finally getting to share their love with each other in front of witnesses made all the hard times worth it. Their daughter Avrael (eight) was the flower girl, their son, Caven (two and a half), was the ring bearer (he wore a sign that said, “Daddy, here comes Mommy”) and to honour their Christian faith, the groom made the ceremony cross. The moment the kids turned the corner to walk down the aisle, Michael wept knowing that his bride would be next.

ELEGANT EDDING.CA 147

The Bride Says…

“Breathe. It’s about love and love is more powerful than anything negative. Leave the stress in the bridal suite or before you get there if you can! Enjoy the pre-wedding moments with your bridesmaids and your parents (and kids if you have them)! If you are really nervous, write your husband-to-be a note with how you are feeling. It might just be the thing that reminds you of the celebration to come.”

The Reception | The medieval-inspired architecture and European

balconies of Shannon and Michael’s reception venue provided the perfect backdrop for their Lord of the Rings theme. Shannon’s older cousin Adrian (who flew in from Vancouver to be the MC) serenaded them during dinner; guests had to either kiss or sing to get the newlyweds to kiss; and the children prepared adorable speeches. Of the whole reception, Shannon’s favourite moment was when Michael did the garter dance (he has moves!) and Michael’s favourite moment was enjoying a huge slice of Hobbit-inspired hazelnut-chocolate cake with his new bride. photography & videography: MPSG Weddings | MPSGWeddings.com

148

The Decor | Michael (a carpenter) and Shannon (a fantasy nerd) created a beautiful combination of their favourite things for their decor scheme. Candles lit up the stone archways; lush greens with hints of wisteria surrounded the space; and each table was named after a Lord of the Rings location (i.e. Lothlórien). To top off the whole look, the couple sat in what they like to call “king chairs” at their head table. MPSG Weddings captured every extraordinary moment.

Sanaz & Wael A TO UCH OF LUXURY

How They Met | Sanaz first heard about Wael through a mutual friend who thought the two would make a great match. At the time, Sanaz was living and studying in Toronto and Wael was doing the same in Ottawa. One night in Toronto, when Sanaz went to a concert with friends, she saw a man in line at the entrance that looked oddly familiar—Wael’s fraternal twin brother. Sanaz instantly recognized him and later that evening called her friend to follow up on his brother Wael. Turns out, Wael had moved back to Toronto for the remainder of his studies and was single. Within a week, her friend set them up on a semi-blind date and the rest is history. The Ceremony | The ornate Sovereign Ballroom at The Omni King Edward Hotel served as the ideal spot for Wael and Sanaz to host their traditional Persian ceremony. Beauty and romance filled the room with lush blush flowers, white orchids and textured greenery from San Remo Florist alongside a gorgeous candlelit sofreh aghd. Soft jazz music played while guests took their seats and when Sanaz walked down the aisle, one of her favourite songs “Mia & Sebastian’s Theme” from the major motion picture La La Land played. The ceremony took place in both English and Arabic (with some Farsi) and was officiated by two of the bride and groom’s closest and oldest friends. flowers

The Reception | With the help of traditional Egyptian Zaffa dancers and drummers, Wael and Sanaz made an outstanding entrance to their reception. Everyone made their way to the centre of the room, surrounded the newlyweds and danced before taking their seats for dinner. Throughout the evening, other performances took place for entertainment such as a live violinist, bongo player and belly dancer.

152

The Decor | Wael and Sanaz’s reception inside The Omni King Edward Hotel’s newly renovated Crystal Ballroom was a magnificent sight to behold. Alongside plenty of crystal candelabra and candles incorporated to make the room sparkle and shine more than it already did, San Remo Florist provided a plethora of flowers to decorate each table and corner. Centrepieces varied between tall and low arrangements that mixed blush peonies, whimsical greenery and gold vases, while local grown orchids were also added to the tablescapes for a touch of luxury. In the middle of the room, a white and gold monogrammed dance floor grounded the theme.

Boho Blooms A bride’s bouquet is perhaps the most essential accessory she carries with her on her wedding day. Like a splash of colour on a blank canvas, the bouquet artfully showcases the personality of a bride. As she walks down the aisle, waltzes into the reception and poses for photos, there the bouquet will be. For the traditional bride, a monochromatic posy or nosegay bouquet will do just fine. But for the boho bride determined to march to the beat of her own drum, expect a colourful display of wild life. When it comes to shape, think outside the box. Take your pick from either an arm sheaf, a crescent or cascading bouquet – each offers a unique way of being carried. Next, couple unlikely combinations of flowers: proteas with thistles, anemones with hydrangeas or tulips with air plants. If it feels as though you’ve just blindly picked out flowers from a garden and put them together, you’re on the right track. Perfection isn’t what makes a boho bouquet beautiful – unpredictability and asymmetry is. If you’d like to maintain a certain level of balance, coordinate the flowers of your bouquet with the current season as well as the designated colour palette of your wedding. Not only will the spontaneity of your bouquet add character to your overall look, it will hint at the charm of leading a carefree boho lifestyle.
