Curriculum Vitae I take pride in my interpersonal skills and enjoy being part of a team. I am punctual, honest, hard-working and always bring a smile to work. I am a fast learner, and I am often trying to broaden and improve my skills in architecture and any other aspect of my life. My architectural interest includes using design across a wide range and as a powerful tool in overcoming societal issues, challenging norms, and improving quality of life and user experience by examining the social, physical, and cognitive relationships between humans and design. I believe in architecture, research, and design thinking to effect good in the world. I will continue to work, learn, and immerse myself in the field to create the best of my ability.

Interests

Achievements

One of my main interests is physical activity; I try to stay active by going to the gym or walking. It helps me release stress and be active at all times.

Group Representative + Yearbook designer (Sept 2018 – Mar 2019) During Year 5, I was a Design Studio representative; I communicated any issues students had with the tutors or the year director. I also designed the yearbook layout that will be used for the following years, and I collated the projects from all 5th-year students.

I like photography. It is one of my passions, and Group Representative + media organiser (Sept 2020 – May 2021) when I have time, I like to go out and take pic- On my elective in my 4th year of architecture, I took the role of social media organizer. In this role, I needed to organize all social media (such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube with the help of my colleagues. tures of nature and cities. I am also really interested in sustainability and During this role, I also designed a website for the class, in which it showed all the updates of the weekly meetmental health. My 5th-year Design Thesis and ing and all the information for the forums organized.

Written Thesis focused on improving people’s Event Organizer (Nov 2014 – Jan 2015) mental health in Glasgow by implementing During my last year of school, my class and I needed to organise a fundraising race. My job was to talk to several companies and get sponsorships such as water, food and infrastructure. green spaces and the circular economy.

Work experience July 2021 - Present Recipro__city x AfterThePandemic Recipro__city is a collaborative design group created by other 9 Strathclyde Architecture Graduate students and me. We are currently working during our free time with After The Pandemic on a project for COP26 in November. We are all assisting as Part II in designing several sustainable and reusable pavilions. Other projects will be developed in the future. I also arrange the social media platforms @recipro__city (Instagram and Twitter). August 2019 - September 2020 Part 1 Architectural Assistant at Cormack Gracie Architects, Paisley My role as a Part 1 consisted of developing architectural drawings and construction details for different projects, such as housing associations, private housing, and retail, mainly located in Scotland. As well, I was able to have contact with engineers and discuss details on such projects. I attended meetings with clients and contractors, which helped me have a better understanding of the projects. Finally, I learned a lot about building regulations, planning regulations, Glasgow housing standards, etc. As I submitted Building Warrant Applications and Planning Applications for several projects. I attended a few site visits, and in the office, I was responding to calls, sending the correspondent letters to Building Control or Planning Control. During my role as a Part 1, I developed different skills due to the different tasks I was able to do. 2017- 2019 Graphic Designer at the Strathclyde Law Review I was working for the Strathclyde Law Review. My job was to organize the layout of the printed version, meaning I need to design the way it looks and make it aesthetically pleasing. I worked with a group of 20 people, and we needed to collaborate to make the best. Working in this position taught me how to work with a big team with people with different roles. Summer 2017 & Summer 2018 Art & Design Teacher I worked two summers at a small school of art, helping children and some young adults develop their drawing skills. I mainly taught them how to draw the basics of an object (plan, elevations and perspectives) and how to draw a building from a magazine, following the proportions and the points of perspective.

WRITTEN THESIS: WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF GREEN SPACES ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF STUDENTS IN HALLS OF RESIDENCE DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN? Mental health issues are common amongst many people around the world, and since the COVID-19 Pandemic started, mental health has been worse for everyone. Lockdowns and restrictions are the norm , and many people were not able to meet others due to the spread of the virus. This has made students daily life much more difficult than before, making lots of them completely isolated in the student accommodations or halls of residence. Student life was shut down entirely, and many other students who stayed in Glasgow did not have opportunities to socialise with others. Most Universities in Glasgow are located in the city centre, so that is why most of the Halls of residence are in dense urban areas and many of them without any views of green spaces or a green features. It is necessary to consider ways to improve students mental health during difficult times, and green spaces can be a solution. Many studies have been done during the past years regarding the relationship between mental health and green or blue spaces. These studies conclude on how green spaces are beneficial and help improve the mental health of those using them. This proven hypothesis has been studied and analysed regarding students living in halls of residence in Glasgow. This Thesis research study focuses on the mental health of students living in Glasgow student accommodations during COVID-19 lockdowns and how green spaces can be beneficial in improving their mental health.

DESIGN THESIS: GROWING POSSILPARK

As my 5th year design project I tackled mental health in one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in Glasgow, Possilpark. Gardening is a great way to improve mental health, and so its Coffee. Coffee has a mood boosting effect as well as a social aspect. That’s why on my project I focus on growing coffee beans, as a way of bringing people together, help improve mental health and at the same time bring back the community economy Possilpark had. This and other spaces to develop skills are designed to create a circular economy in the neighbourhood. Growing Possilpark has been designed to help the local economy and the mental health of the residents to become a stronger and more prosperous community. The spaces will help develop and create skill as well as connecting with others while in a nature environment. Buildings, green spaces and routes have been introduced around the area to achieve this.

GREENING

DEVELOP

There are several ways of improving mental health. Gardening is one of them. It has several benefits such as stress relief, immunity booster, bacteria friendly and helps have a healthy diet as well as a healthy physical and mental lifestyle. Caffeine found in teas and coffee has also benefits in our mental health. It has a mood-boosting effect that helps to relieve and or protect against depression.

IMAGE 2

The first stage is the implementation of the circular economy. On the 23rd of April, Glasgow became the first city in Uk to sign the circular cities declaration. By implementing a circular economy it will boost the community as well as its expenses locally.

The site is right next to Saracen Street, the high street of Possilpark. The diagram above shows the sun path as well as the materials and the pedestrianise streets. The site is near the Possilpark gealth centre and the Community centre of NG Homes. The site was chosen because is near the main street as weell as in the centre of Possilpark.

IMAGE 3

10

IMAGE 4

In the past Possilpark was full of jobs. People living in Possilpark would work there and spend their money too. Nowadays, there are no jobs. That means people won’t spend money, specially in the community, so we get back to not having jobs. In Possilpark there is another big problem, drugs. As shown on the diagram, If people don’t have jobs, they have spare free time for a long period of time. This means most of them get into drugs, making it difficult to get back into the society and find a job. Getting into drugs also means that the money they have will be spent on it, then the quality of life will be lower.

IMAGE 5

IMAGE 6

IMAGE 7

The cycle could be broken by implamenting gardening into the community. After helping improve the cycle, there is another cycle that is created. On this one, there are jobs, money to spend in the community, free time and leisure. Jobs, money and expenses go together; once one of them is not achieved, the other follow. Leisure and health are found in the community

The use of nature to develop and create skills is one of the most important pillars of Growing Possilpark. Along with this, using leisure and connecting with people to create job opportunities is what the design achieves. Creating spaces in which there is an interaction with people and nature but using it as a part of people’s daily life. ELENA BENITEZ ESPINO | PART II PORTFOLIO | 2021

BIG-SCALE INTERVENTION On the proposed masterplan, there will be parks and community gardens in a radio of 15 mins. Possilpark was and still is an industrial neighbourhood, making this green spaces a big part on the strategy. The different sites will be connected. All these connections will be pedestrianised, green and with bike lanes.

All these connections will be pedestrianised, green and with bike lanes.

SARACEN STREET Saracen street was the busiest street in Possilpark, but nowadays is full of carS and unused shops. With Growing Possilpark, the busy car streets will be transformed in more pedestrianise spaces with a bus lane and cycle lanes.

IMAGE 10

Saracen street needs to be transformed into a more pedestrianise street. New shops will help boost the economy of Possilpark with the implementation of the circular economy, and at the same time it will create a more sustainable neighbourhood. This improvements will attract more people due to the retail and the new green spaces added throughout Possilpark.

IMAGE 11

13

MEDIUM-SCALE INTERVENTION The site is located next to Saracen Street and it is divided into two separate spaces. All the streets around will be pedestrianise making them a connection between the building and the Main Street. At the same time, the building will be associated to the health centre near it, so Growing Possilpark can be used as a green therapy treatment for patients.

IMAGE 12

The building consists of different spaces. The most predominant one is the greenhouse in which the coffee beans will be planted. This space contains a ramp that goes all around the space to create an experience to he public. This space is connected to the processing space which is also connected to the main building. It contains a tower to bring back the industrial features Possilpark had. IMAGE 13

The greenhouse will be a landmark in possilpark. The tower would be seen from any place in Possilpark bringing the site as the centre of the neighbourhood.

14

IMAGE 14

The building has different spaces that will be used by the community. These spaces would be booked and arrange so everyone can use them. Several spaces are designed to bring people together, like the skill sharing space, where theteacher becomes the student and the student the teacher.

The building represents what Possilpark was and what it can be. Possilpark was an industrial neighbourhood with lots of jobs and a community economy. The community spirit is still present in Possilpark. People living in the neighbourhood feel part of a community, and that’s why Growing Possilpark will be an important landmark in the community of Possilpark.

IMAGE 16

IMAGE 17

Senses play a big part on mental health. The building has different visual features to make the experience different but also help improve the mental health. Around all the spaces, there is a focus on smells as well as visual and touch. People can create and use their imagination in most of the spaces. For example painting, pottery and or woodworking. Making this last really important in the development of the community led spaces around possilpark.

SMALL-SCALE INTERVENTIONS Possil-Coffee is the new branded coffee made in Possilpark. This and many other things made in Growing Possilpark will boost the economy. Coffee not only helps mental health because on the caffeine in it. Possil-Coffee also helps because of the social aspect of it.

IMAGE 27 IMAGE 28

Around Saracen street and other places in Possilpark, the small intervention will be used, creating spaces for people to connect with nature and also to connect with other people. These seatings will be implemented around Possilpark to provide a greener neighbourhood.

GANGS IN GOVAN: RESEARCH, MASTERPLAN AND MAIN SPACE The first part of the project concerns both the identification of, and brief formation for, a selected building typology which you as an architect consider essential for a representation of the people of Govan (an historical burgh, and now district), located to the west of the City of Glasgow. This is to be formulated in conjunction with the strategic design(s) of the main voluminous space (Primary Space) within the building and one’s approach(es) to and from it. This typology should be selected from one of the 4 strategic silos mentioned above (City, Society, Technology and Environment) which are currently identified as the main areas of research within the Department of Architecture. This project will serve to challenge you in strategic project identification, brief formation, and conclusively the manifestation of that research into a fully designed piece of urban architecture.

RESEARCH

Govan and Glasgow City

IMAGE 30

Before deciding what can benefit Govan, I decided to do some interviews to people that live there. This helped to have an idea of the main problems in the area.

Kids are a concern Kids are a concern because of not having anything to do after school. Some of the kids join gangs. The streets decide which gang they belong to. Lots of kids grow up in tough areas and don’t end up fighting in the streets. Govan is one example, there have been gangs for over 70 years. Nowadays, more than 10 are crammed into a three mile radius.

WHY MMA ?

Gang members express through aggression, gym musculature, physical dominance and violence. For them, fighting provides achievements with no financial costs. These ‘masculine’ traits for lads in the schemes were sources of esteem and recognition. MMA offers the adrenaline gang members look for, but in a controlled environment. One of MMA and Martial Arts’ achievements is fighting modalities by having the mind completely blank so there is a better concentration with the mind-bodyspirit connection. Through daily practice with a partner, you master not only technique, but develop a spirit of satisfaction and enjoyment. This fosters a relaxed natural attitude with is very beneficial to the students who wishes to go beyond just the physical aspects of the martial arts. Mutual respect is very important for each other. This is because it is practiced with another being thrown or exchanging technique so you need thoughtfulness for each other. It requires a great dedication to practice every day. This dedication builds a discipline strength and mental toughness. Training with an opponent develops speed, power, and timing, and will expose any weakness in technique.

This design aims to take gang violence from the streets and create a save and disciplined space to do so. 22

MASTERPLAN The masterplan identifies problems in Govan that could be considered redemption to crime. All the buildings involved in the masterplan have taken a similar approach in that all the buildings are attempting to alleviate these problems rather than punishing. All buildings take the users through a process and each building will focus on helping a different generational group and help a whole community.

Sites taken to develop in the masterplan

Our aim is to connect all the buildings by creating a road that will help regenerate govan and, as mentioned before, prevent the crime Govan has. We created this curved road with different point of accesses.

The street needed to be regenerated, we accomplished that by adding new uses to the building there and/or adding new ones. The main street has really tall buildings used for retail and restaurants, cafes… so there is a new ‘high street in Govan where people can get everything they need and help with the tourism. There is also a plaza in the north, around the current church. We created a wall on the left of the plaza and several retail building on the right. These create the shape of the plaza.

The sites ‘developed’ for our buildings have different views. The site right next to the plaza has a view to the river, he triangular shape one has a view to a garden and also river and the one on the south of the street has a view of a few gardens.

After the creation of the road and the plaza we realised there was a need of connecting Govan to Glasgow City Centre and Partick because there is no connection with the other side of the river Clyde for a few kilometers. We connected Govan to the Transport Museum and Partick and Partick to the Transport Museum too.

THE SITE The site was chosen because of the location on the new masterplan. It is located on a ‘neutral’ zone for the gangs in Govan. The main entrance is located on the new High Street and there are three adjacent green spaces next to the space.

AN UNDER-GRADUATE DESIGN THESIS: A SOCIAL ART COMMUNITY CENTRE This project explores the theme of ‘Performance’ and ‘the City’, it is proposed that it will take the form of a Thesis project similar to that which will conclude the post-graduate degree. Taking the results of your research as a starting point, you are required to develop a suitable built response to the issues raised. The specific brief for your design will be a direct response to your unit Manifesto. However, the programme shall be for an institution to satisfy man’s need to play and will contain at least one large performance space designed to accommodate an audience of between 100-200 people. The building provides a venue for public performance in a predetermined and specific controlled environment. It will demonstrate your ability to handle a complexity of user groups. Spectators, performers, administrative/technical staff and those who come to practice/learn all have differing requirements. Complex sequences of circulation willrequire to be resolved in your design. As a public facility, it is expected that your design will be located within and relate to a designed public space, either as part of a unit or an individual urban design strategy. The ‘image’ of your design should reflects its purpose, and be contextually appropriate in its specific and designed urban environment.
