Based on our track record of patient advocacy, local EMS like Hatzolah know to make us the “Second Call” when dealing with patients who have no local relatives or next of kin. This ensures that all decisions will be made with the full knowledge and approval of the patient.

This “Case Management” division was launched with the “alone & elderly” e.g.; Holocaust Survivors in mind. Aside from English, they are fluent in Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian and more importantly, patient’s rights.

Regardless if it’s monitoring an entire case history or simply stepping in until a family member is located, We Are Family ensures that this very special group will receive the care and compassion they deserve.

Ten years ago hospitals and medical providers had only just begun implementing the now ubiquitous bacterial scrubs. The fact that this practice wasn’t yet in place in area hospitals confused and concerned a number of local residents who were dealing with hospitalized family members whose stays had to be extended due to illnesses they acquired after being admitted.

After assembling the data to understand why other facilities WERE aggressively going “germ free,” this group contacted the department heads with “jurisdiction” over this, and presented them with their findings—as well as the challenge to explain why their facilities were one of the few still ignoring it.

More than an impetus it was also an EPIPHANY as this group realized that despite the numerous healthcare-centric “CHESED” organizations, few if any addressed accountability and patient advocacyand how these elements could affect even the simplest procedures and shortest stays.

WHILE THIS tenacity WAS IRONICALLY TOO LATE TO HELP THE HOSPITALIZED INDIVIDUALS THAT inspired IT, IT STILL BECAME THE catalyst WHICH CAUSED A NUMBER OF WELL-REGARDED NY HOSPITALS TO FAST-TRACK UPDATED germ free POLICIES.

Soon these individuals began advising friends and associates who were in similar positions. Word spread that there was finally a “healthcare-related” Chesed organization focused on enabling and empowering people so they could help themselves and ultimately others. As this group grew, they saw firsthand the truth behind the expression “there’s strength in numbers” –-as the more people they represented, the faster the results.

As this kind of comprehensive approach has become synonymous with The Vaad, it’s not surprising requests for the Friends That Care course arrive daily from through out the US & Europe .

Based on a recent Consumer Reports study of 81 NY area hospitals, 1 out of 4 patients will contract a potentially fatal yet unrelated infection or illness. While this study galvanized numerous groups to react, THE VAAD was virtually the only organization to promote a proactive and preventive program. The aptly named Friends That Care is just that—a group of volunteers who will ‘train’ both hospital patients and their family members/caregivers, on how to “survive” a hospital stay as well as rehab, etc. THE VAAD formed Friends Who Care in memory of Chana Spitzer--a woman who died from complications unrelated to the relatively treatable ailment she was admitted for

In less time than it takes to break for lunch, Friends That Care’s “course” provides an “admitting to discharge” perspective regarding what to look out for, what to avoid, what to insist on –and most important why. From pharmaceuticals to primary physicians, infection prevention to insights on communicating with staff, the Friends That Care course helps ensure a stay is as uneventful as possible. Those who’ve completed it, call it “the best-kept secret in healthcare.” Based on changes to the healthcare system, it will become even more important in helping patients understand a landscape that has now often puts the provider ahead of the patient.

This did not deter them as they understood that all healthcare providers ultimately want the best for their patients as
