legendary company from the start, Sintor Trucks was founded from the pursuit of the perfect balance of performance and style in a diesel powered truck. The founders of Sintor have deep roots in the automotive industry and have always felt a void in the luxury truck market. Sintor started as a concept to wow both the truck community and the supercar community. Their mission was to build the world’s first Supertruck. One of the essential steps in any project is the foundation. The Ford SuperDuty was the ideal platform to build the first Sintor. The 6.7L Powerstroke engine is extremely reliable and has the torque to pull up to 30,000 pounds. A carbon fiber hood scoop and grille complete the aggressive look that everyone desires in a SuperTruck. Why Carbon Fiber? When Carbon Fiber is mixed with the correct epoxy resins, it is many times stronger than metal. Not only is Carbon Fiber stronger than metal and fiberglass, it’s also incredibly light. This is why manufacturers of everything from airplanes to boats are embracing carbon fiber over metal or fiberglass alternatives. Elevated asked Brian George, the Founder fo Sintor Trucks, a few questions to dive deeper into what it mean to build and buy a Sintor Truck. Elevated: What defines a Sintor Truck? Brian George: The massive 46” tires mixed with Ford Raptor styling utilizing our carbon fiber fenders. When we set out to build a Sintor not only did it have to look like a show piece it had to perform too. We drive our stuff and we drive them hard. We wanted Sintor to do well on all elements of on and off road.

What is the process of building a Sintor from a Ford Super Duty truck? We take a stock F250,350 0r 450 strip it down to the cab, engine, trans and frame, then build it back from there. Virtually every piece of the axles and suspension is either replaced or modified. Bigger brakes, coil over conversion, regearing, widened rear axles, etc. From the suspension we move on to the body. To make the truck more proportioned and to fit that “Raptor” theme, the headlights are pushed out about 6”. This requires a whole new sub frame to be fabricated and installed. Once all the framework has been done the truck is sent off to body and paint. Most builds are a factory paint match but we can and have done full body color changes. Once it comes back from the body and paint all the fun stuff gets installed, wheels, tires, lights, bumpers etc. Once everything is installed and our safety inspections are complete, the truck gets road tested and then delivered to the customer. The entire build process takes about 90 days depending on options.

Tell us about the suspension on a Sintor Truck. In addition to every Sintor using a F450 front axle, our Sintor suspension uses Fox Coil Over shocks (Kings are optional). The front end comes standard with 2.5 Coil Over Shocks and 2.5 bypass shocks are on all 4 corners. In the rear, we use a soft rate leaf spring setup giving you a substantially smoother ride and if you match that with our optional long travel airbags, it will maintain close to factory towing specs. What has been one of your favorite builds? We get asked this a lot. I always say….the next one. We love creating, building and pushing the envelope on every build the wilder and more outside the box the better. What are some future projects you’re excited about? Two specifically come to mind. We are in the process of developing an Overland Sintor build. The second would be a build a previous customer has commissioned us to build. his book’s title, Ultimate Collector Cars by Taschen, sums up in just three simple words pretty much what it is all about. As a carefully curated anthology of one hundred of the most exquisite, remarkable and coveted collector cars of all time, it spans the whole history of the modern automobile. These motoring icons — from the world’s very first performance cars of the early 1900s to today’s ultraadvanced hypercars — represent the apotheosis of automotive engineering and design. Even in their own times these exemplars of automotive art, which so skillfully balanced state-of-the-art technology with boundarypushing aesthetics, were seen as super-special and today knowledgeable collectors continue to hanker after them for their exceptional power, beauty and rarity. Many of the cars included in this work are legendary for their especially pioneering designs such as the Mercedes-Simplex 40 hp, the Jaguar D-Type, the Maserati Tipo 61 “Birdcage”, the Lamborghini Miura and the McLaren F1. Others, like the Bugatti Type 35, the Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B MM, the Ferrari 250 GTO, the Ford GT40 MK II or the Maserati MC12, are not only celebrated for the exquisite design and engineering that they embody, but also for their landmark victories at famous races, notably the Targa Florio, the Mille Miglia, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 12 Hours of Sebring, or the FIA GT World Championship Series and, thereby, their tangible association with some of the most famous drivers of their day, such as Sir Henry “Tim” Birkin, Tazio Nuvolari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss and Phil Hill. Without exception, all the cars are closely linked to the world’s most celebrated designers and constructors, including Wilhelm Maybach, Enzo Ferrari, Battista “Pinin” Farina, Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche and Carroll Shelby.

With the aim of bringing together the best of the best, all the leading salerooms, automotive museums and manufacturers’ collections as well as top-level dealers’ former and current inventories have been scoured for the most magnificent examples in order to present within the pages of this volume what we believe to be the definitive selection of ultimate collector cars. Only the most prized variants of each chosen model have been selected, so you will find, for instance, not just any Jaguar XK-SS but instead the magnificent example that was once owned by Steve McQueen that now resides in the Petersen Automotive Museum.

Another example is the Lamborghini Miura, for which we are featuring a peerless specimen, one of only four original factory-built P400 SVJ variants. All of these remarkable cars are presented here with beautiful imagery by some of the world’s leading automotive photographers, and accompanied by the fascinating backstories of their design, development, specification, and in many cases provenance. Another common thread that ties our selection together is the fact that the vast majority of the cars that have made the final cut are either former racers with documented race histories or competitionderived models.

This is for the simple reason that motorsports have always propelled advancements in cuttingedge automotive design and engineering, and will no doubt continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Above all, the outstanding cars shown over the coming pages are physical realizations of the enduring relationship between man and machine, which in the case of such superlative models provides a unique interface that not only quickens the heart but piques all the senses, too. Yet more than this, these one hundred rare beasts also represent lifetimes of toil in the pursuit of motoring perfection. It is as though the blood, sweat and tears shed by their creators in their singleminded quest for ever-greater performance have been alchemically wrought into sublimely beautiful yet purposeful forms. The resultant masterpieces are probably as close to art as any functional object can get, for they are exquisite expressions of design and engineering conducted at the highest levels. They are the masterworks of genius engineers, gifted design maestros and passionate, supremely skilled craftsmen for whom automotive excellence is everything — the alpha and the omega of their very existence. These are the individuals who tirelessly live and breathe, day in and day out, the creation of cars that push the outer limits of existing technology in their pursuit of ever more thrilling handling and high-speed velocity. As the legendary “car guy” Jay Leno has rightly observed, “Any car can be a collector car, if you collect it.” 1 The examples featured here, however, represent the very zenith of the carcollecting world, insofar as the availability of imagery has allowed. Yes, there might be some other, possibly even better, exemplars out there, but invariably their ownership is either shrouded in secrecy or they are locked away in inaccessible collections whose owners are reluctant to share their imagery, or even knowledge of their existence, with the public. The selected cars are, therefore, to the best of our efforts, the paramount examples that are available to be shown. In fact, the numerous image sources we have depended on for this book have been outstandingly generous and in certain cases have even specially commissioned new photography for us. The resulting assemblage of stunning collector cars has been ordered chronologically to purposefully demonstrate not only the incredible historical evolution in form and function that has taken place over the last one hundred and twenty years, but also to show that automotive design throughout its relatively short history has been an incredible expression of each era’s zeitgeist.

As Leslie Kendall, the curator of the Petersen Automotive Museum, notes, “During periods of creative endeavor, humankind has found it irresistible to bestow on ordinary objects an artistic overlay that elevates them far above their original utilitarian purposes ... Civilized cultures always seem to have known the essential distinction between ‘getting there’ and ‘arriving’.”² And for sure, the cars found in this book are as far removed from the utilitarian “people’s car” as you can possibly get. In fact, they must be considered the auto world’s equivalent of Rembrandts, Van Goghs and Picassos. Whatever the future may bring, however, it is highly likely there will remain a limited recreational demand for both “old” and “new” ultimate collector cars, because, let’s face it, none of the examples shown over the following pages is used as a daily runabout — they are far too valuable for that. If the truth be told, very few get out that much at all, and even fewer are raced on a regular basis, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t see more light of day. In fact, it is that potentiality that makes them all the more alluring. While such fantastically valuable cars more often than not function as, or are, museum exhibits, the latent possibility they present of high-octane drivability is still utterly enthralling. The ultimate collector car has throughout its short but glorious history always been a potent symbol of mankind’s relentless quest to find a better way of doing things with the technologies and materials at hand, while also being a vital medium for artistic expression. But more than this, these “immortals” are also the physical testimony of the enduring passion such beautiful and powerful machines can induce, whether you actually own one or not. The reason for this is, when you get right down to it, ultimate collector cars have always been a totally captivating elixir of status, power, beauty and speed that conjure up the freedom of the open road as well as enticing visions of epic touring adventures and thrilling on-track shenanigans, with often a pinch of wistful nostalgia peppered in for good measure. he history of Charlotte, North Carolina dates back to colonial times. It was first incorporated during the Revolutionary War and promptly named after England’s King George III’s wife. The client envisioned the car as a ‘land jet’, bringing the serene exclusivity of private air travel to the road. The car’s striking two-tone exterior matches the characteristic green and cream glazes of antique Japanese Oribe ware, of which Maezawa-san is a prominent collector. The upper part is finished in Oribe Green, a fully Bespoke color created exclusively for the client; in an unusual move, Rolls-Royce has made the paint available for use on the client’s private jet the Phantom will be paired with. Developed over many months by specialists in the Surface Finish Center at Goodwood, it perfectly captures the lustrous, deep-green glaze that characterizes these 16th century ceramics. The effect is beautifully completed by the cream-white lower section. Dominik Severino: So the first thing I would like to ask is, what was the build that was the most inspiring to you, or the build that changed the way you go about doing what you do, and why? Aaron Richardet: Well starting back in ‘08 or ‘09, we were at the bottom working our way up, learning through the curves. And one of the most important things that I try to center my business on is customer satisfaction. So with any of the projects that I am working on now, I don’t want to make excuses for, or apologize for anything. Which is tough because I always strive for perfection,

and even new cars have issues. So at some point you have to make changes. We want the customer to love the way it looks, the way it drives, and the way it feels, and we want to custom tailor it to them. And with that said, we want to have duplications, so that if something does go wrong, we can fix it and ensure customer satisfaction. You can’t do that with restoring old trucks like we used to. That’s why now our builds have gone from old cars being restored to brand new builds with brand new parts. So let’s say I see Osprey in a magazine, or online, and I am immediately intrigued. I contact you, then what happens? Usually we just talk. 95% of the time, these are not people’s primary cars, but cars for a second or third home. And I have to know what the need, and design for the vehicle is. So we’ll just start talking like two buddies, and figure out how you are going to use it.

We do a lot of luxurious builds for The Hamptons, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Orange County, places like that, but we also send a lot of our products to the upper midwest for fly fishing vehicles. And when we do those, we change up the interior. It’s not as glamorous because they’ll want to put the dog, fishing poles and tackle in the car, and hose it out at the end of the day. So we just have a long conversation. People come to me with ideas and they either work or they don’t. And if they don’t, we want to keep the customer as happy as possible, so we’ll always suggest the option that guarantees the most functionality, and durability. I’m curious about the artistry behind your product. I’m sure that sometimes customers will come in and bring new ideas to your attention, and inspire you with something that you haven’t thought of. All the time. Maybe someone will see something they like such as a custom Sprinter, and they’ll ask for teak floors, and that wasn’t something that we came up with on our own. A customer back in 2012 suggested that, and eight or nine years ago we were doing that before anybody. Right now, we’re doing a truck for a distillery in Kentucky, and we’re putting all of their

custom logos on it. They’ll keep it around the distillery for a while, and then it’ll go up to Montana to be their fly fishing vehicle. You mentioned that a lot of your business comes from places like Nantucket and Orange County. What is it about those areas where you see a high concentration of customers? The reason being is that we build a lot of Defenders, and Defenders are very versatile vehicles. Every outdoor lifestyle person knows all about them, and that type of buyer is always looking, and they’re always thinking about it. Now that Landrover is also really advertising their new line of Defenders, it is reinvigorating people who wanted one, for example when they got out of college but couldn’t afford it. They’ll see the new Defender, and they aren’t the same as the older ones. That’s how they’ll come across us. And at the end of the day, they’re about the same price as some of your high class sports cars, but if you pull up in one of those, vs. pulling up in an Osprey Defender, you’ll be treated a very different way. A lot of our buyers like that aspect of it. They can have a really nice car to add to their collection and functionally use whether they’re down in Alabama at their duck hunting place, Texas, or somewhere like Orange County.

What is a build that you are currently working on that really has you inspired? Well, the one that comes to mind isn’t a build, it’s a restoration. It’s for a really nice guy up in New York. He bought a car back in California and didn’t get what he thought he was getting. So he contacted me, and I was up in New York so I went to pick up his car and meet face to face, which I usually don’t do; I usually meet the customers face to face when I drop off their vehicles. And he kind of held off on a couple of things as he wanted to save a couple grand. So his wife reached out to me later without him knowing and said, “Listen I know that he really wants this color, so how much extra is it?” His car is going to be delivered next week, and he has no idea that it is going to be blue, because his wife is doing that as a gift. I can’t wait to see the look on his face once I back it out of the trailer. That’s an amazing story, and I’m sure he’s going to be blown away. Do you get a lot of significant others ordering vehicles as gifts? Very often, yes. We have about eighteen projects active in the shop right now, and three of them are gifts. You have eighteen active projects right now?! Yes, eighteen active projects. We break all of our stuff down into crews and teams. We have three massive rooms in our building. One for things like the engine, axles, the frame, all the plumbing and that sort of stuff. Then a room where we work on the body, and then it comes to the room where we do the final finish and any last touches. The most important thing to know is that every one of my customers gets my direct phone number. I’m always here for them seven days a week. We stand behind our product, and we look to build a long term relationship with our customers. That’s why I personally deliver almost all of the projects so that we get to meet in the end eye to eye. I love repeat business, and referrals are the easiest sells of all. That’s what has helped our business grow so much.

amborghini Squadra Corse presents the SC20, a unique specimen of an open-top track car typeapproved for road use. The SC20 is the second one-off engineered by the motorsport department and designed by Centro Stile in Sant’Agata Bolognese: the car was created following the customer’s wishes, who was involved in the project from the very first drawings by Lamborghini’s designers. The common goal was to build a unique vehicle, extreme in its design and performance, and able to combine aerodynamic solutions taken from racing Lamborghinis incorporating unprecedented lines and exclusive details. “Two years after the SC18 Alston, the SC20 was a new, intriguing challenge. The chief sources of inspiration were the Diablo VT Roadster, Aventador J, Veneno Roadster and Concept S, and the result is a dramatic combination of creativity and racing attitude,” commented Mitja Borkert, Head of Design Lamborghini Centro Stile. The carbon fiber body was polished and slicked down by hand by the Lamborghini aerodynamic engineers to deliver optimal airflow for both performance and the cockpit’s occupants, ensuring comfortable openair driving even at high speeds. The pronounced front splitter is framed by two fins and the air intakes on the front hood are inspired by those of the Huracán GT3 EVO, while the sculpted body sides reflect the solutions adopted on the Essenza SCV12. The muscular rear is topped by a large carbon fiber wing that can be set in three different positions: Low, Medium and High Load.

The SC20 features exclusive details starting from the body colors on a Bianco Fu (white) base, created for the customer, on which the Blu Cepheus (blue) livery stands out. The same shade is found in the interior, alternating with Nero Cosmus (black) and Bianco Leda (white). The most significant element of the passenger compartment is the visible carbon fiber used for the dashboard cover, rear wall, door panels, center console and steering wheel trim, in addition to the monocoque. Carbon fiber is also used for the shells of the seats upholstered in Alcantara and leather. The door handles on the other hand, are machined from solid aluminum. Lastly, the air vents are created using 3D printing technology at the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory. Maurizio Reggiani, Chief Technical Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, stated, “The SC20 is a combination of sophisticated engineering, Italian craftsmanship, sportiness and advanced design. It is also an example of applying our V12 engine and carbon fiber to a radical opentop vehicle that unmistakably carries the Lamborghini DNA.”

Featuring a hybrid aluminium and carbon fibre chassis and carbon fibre panels, the Panther’s 5.2-litre, V10 engine produces 650hp and 600Nm of torque that propel the car from 0-100kmh in a mind-concentrating 3.1 seconds and then on to a top speed of 325kmh. Last year, ARES announced its first wholly designed supercar – the ARES S1 Project. The self-imposed challenge was to create a car that combined the design of a hypercar, the performance of a supercar and the accessibility of a sports car. The S1’s mesmerising exterior was created by the company’s Centro Stile department. Constructed from hand-crafted carbon fibre body panels, the car’s dramatic low-profile silhouette, curvaceous wheel arches, low front splitter and forward-sitting cockpit give the car an aggressive but flowing stance, while producing maximum downforce and minimum aerodynamic resistance.

Its sleek design and performance are enhanced by its dynamic rear spoiler and the eye-catching exhaust exiting the bonnet – leaving the rear extractor free and clean. And, at its heart, it is powered by a naturally aspirated V8 powerplant. With a maximum of 8,800rpm, the car’s powerful acceleration will produce an anticipated 0 -100kmh in 2.7s. Order books for this astonishing car are already open. Jojo Anavim New York City based artist Jojo Anavim has established his body of work stemming from a background in graphic design and brand development. Previously a creative consultant for brands such as W Hotels, and Universal Music Group, Anavim crossed over fulltime to fine art in 2013. His work continually employs bold color palettes, acrylic paint, oil stick, collage scraps, found items and advertisements Anavim has been collecting since his childhood. He is known for elevating the mundane by transforming everyday items into objects of transcendence. The paintings oscillate freely between playful and subversive. Triggered by his fascination with a child-like consciousness, Anavim challenges the viewer to not only see something beautiful, but feel something as well. As a child (until age 15) Anavim enrolled in art classes taught by Disney animator Al Baruch, creator of the legendary characters Captain Hook and Mighty Mouse. Anavim credits Baruch with instilling a creative confidence that led him to embrace art as more than

orsche is celebrating the 25th birthday of its roadster family with an anniversary model: the Boxster 25 years. The limited edition is restricted to 1,250 units worldwide and is based on the GTS 4.0 model (718 Boxster GTS 4.0: Fuel consumption combined 10.8 - 9.6 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 246 - 219 g/km), which is powered by a 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine with 294 kW (400 PS). It makes reference to numerous design features of the Boxster concept car that heralded the success story of the open-top two-seater at the 1993 Detroit Motor Show. The production version was launched in 1996 with hardly any changes in its visual appearance and is now in its fourth generation after production of more than 357,000 units.One of the most striking features of the special

model is the reinterpreted colour Neodyme, a copperlike shimmering brown, which provided an exciting contrast to the basic GT Silver Metallic color on the pioneering 1993 showpiece. In the special edition, it is used on the front apron, the side air intakes with mono bar as well as for the lettering and the two-tone 20-inch alloy wheels. Porsche is offering the Boxster 25 years in GT Silver Metallic although Deep Black Metallic and Carrara White Metallic are also available. Another striking element can be found on the fuel filler cap, which is enhanced by Porsche script from the Exclusive Design range. This shines in an aluminium look as do the high-gloss tailpipes of the sports exhaust system while the windscreen surround is finished in contrasting Black.

he Centodieci evokes automotive history: the unique project is a tribute to the legendary EB 110. This few-off project comprises production of just ten vehicles for an exclusive clientele. The next phase is about to start for the hyper sports car with a W16 engine and 1,600 PS: the first prototype for series development is currently being assembled. The design of the Centodieci with its flat front, low-slung front spoiler and three-part air intakes reinterpret the shape of the most famous super sports car of the 1990s. The EB 110 was a key milestone on the road to the revival of the Bugatti brand in 1998 at Bugatti’s historic headquarters in Molsheim, ultimately resulting in the first hyper sports car of the modern era – the Veyron.The Centodieci is Bugatti’s way of paying its respects to the Italian entrepreneur Romano Artioli and architect Giampaolo Benedini, the men who created the EB 110 some 30 years ago. “The challenge for us was not to get caught up in the design of the legendary EB 110 itself and avoid focusing solely on a retrospective approach. Our aim was to create a modern interpretation of the shape and technology of that time: but at the same time, we didn’t want to lose the charm and character of the EB 110. After all, the super sports car is still fascinating today with its distinctive design and technology,” says Achim Anscheidt, Design Director at Bugatti. The biggest challenge: to transform the very flat, wedgeshaped and graphically virtually two-dimensional body of the EB 110 into a modern, three-dimensional sculpture to project the fascination of the super sports cars of that time into the modern age.
