Labor Day weekend is expected to bring in over $240 million in national retail cannabis sales, according to Akerna, developer of seed-tosale software technology MJ Platform. To give you a historical financial perspective, Friday, September 3rd is expected to be the second-highest cannabis retail sales day in 2021, with a predicted $90 million in sales. This would make it the second-highest sales day of 2021, falling after 4/20, the unofficial cannabis consumption holiday. These kind of gargantuan numbers lead one to believe that America really likes its weed. I’m sure living in a pandemic has played no small role in people flocking to cannabis for both its anxiety-reducing and sleep-inducing qualities. I, for one, have turned many people on to the healing powers of cannabinoids that include not only THC, but also CBD, CBN, and CBG. As cannabis becomes more understood by the mainstream public, especially with 34 states now having some form of legal cannabis, the plant’s healing properties are becoming more and more acceptable. Even PBS is on board. Later this month PBS’s vaunted science series, NOVA, will be premiering The Cannabis Question, a new film exploring our relationship with cannabis, uncovering what scientists have discovered about the plant’s effects on the body and brain, including its potential risks and medicinal benefits, and the demonization and criminalization that has disproportionately harmed communities of color over several decades. “A majority of Americans now live in states where cannabis is legal. As more people make their own choices about cannabis use, this film explores what scientists have learned so far about the

potential benefits and risks” said NOVA CoExecutive Producer Julia Cort. “We hope The Cannabis Question will inspire people to join the national conversation about cannabis—informed by the science, and also by the story of how the plant has been weaponized against marginalized communities, causing irreparable harm.” For those who are interested in finding out about the science behind cannabis, NOVA is doing a deep dive. “The Cannabis Question is one of the first documentaries to closely examine the latest scientific research on our body’s endocannabinoid system and how cannabis engages it,” said the film’s writer, producer, and director Sarah Holt. “I hope viewers will come away with an understanding of why this is one of the most important regulatory systems in our body—and anytime you use cannabis, you are engaging with it.” The Cannabis Question premieres Wednesday, September 29 at 6 p.m. PST on PBS and will also be available for streaming online at pbs.org/nova and via the PBS video app. Knowledge is power, wisdom is liberation,

The pipe’s inspiration is drawn from the 1998 cult classic Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas that starred actors Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro as Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, respectively. The adventure comedy-drama was adapted from writer Hunter S. Thompson's 1971 novel of the same name. The movie details the duo's journey in Thompson’s red Chevrolet Caprice convertible nicknamed the Great Red Shark through Las Vegas as their initial journalistic intentions devolve into an exploration of the city under the influence of psychoactive substances. “It's an honor to carry such a symbolic piece at Jardín and to see the history behind the 1960s story of Fear and Loathing and compare it to where we are today with the legalization of cannabis,” said Semii Gebreyonas, Director of Marketing at Jardín. Boasting an intricate design made from 100% flameworked glass, the piece sits 24” long, weighs almost 16 pounds, and took about 2,500 man hours to create as a collaboration between six individual artists that included Carlos Ali, Hoobs, Carsten, Rocko, Malaquias and Coyle. The glass rig is currently on display at Jardín, located at 2900 E. Desert Inn Road.

You can go the outdoor route and take in Life is Beautiful on stages throughout Downtown Las Vegas or you can hit the iHeartRadio Music Festival that will be taking place inside T-Mobile Arena on the Strip. No matter which way you like to experience music or who you prefer to listen to, one thing is certain, you will need to plan accordingly when it comes to the necessary joy-inducing festival accompaniments. The Spirit of Hope

A MAGICAL INGREDIENT THAT LIVES INSIDE ALL OF US By Deborah L Costella

he was a gift. One of several elegantly wrapped to please and entice. Her image has been depicted as that of a slender woman, waves of chestnut hair cascading down her shoulders, a plaited crown atop her head. Her skin, a glistening porcelain white like the mists that spray heavenward from the crests of ocean waves. Yards of shimmering blue and gold fabric barely conceal her curvaceous figure beneath. Though artists have painted her through their own perceptions, each show her arms tenderly wrapped around a bountiful bouquet of flowers or a cornucopia of seasonal harvest. With a Mona Lisa-like smile set upon her unburdened face, she was known as Elpis, the Spirit of Hope.

As the story goes, it was the titan Prometheus who was tasked with the job of creating humanity. However, his creations were left in the dark without heat, completely dependent upon the gods, who treated them badly. This caused sorrow and dismay for Prometheus, who voiced his concerns to the other gods. His pleas to give humanity more in the way of basic needs and comfort were ignored. Taking matters into his own hands, Prometheus dipped a reed into the sun bringing fire to humans. Enabling them to warm themselves, cook their food, and create light when darkness fell. Now, they were no longer subject solely to the will and whims of the gods.

I found myself hoping my dad, a uniformed police officer, wouldn’t catch me marching at the same anti-war rallies he was working. It was during that Make Love Not War era that I, along with thousands of others, hoped for the legalization of marijuana. Was I suffering when I hoped for those things? No, but many others were. Certainly, I’ve had my share of difficulties, scares and bad times, calling upon hope to lift me up and assist in seeing an event through to a positive and satisfactory conclusion. But the matters I’ve pinned my hopes on pale in comparison to stories I’m told, read or see on the news. I don’t like to see others suffer. Worse, it pains me even more to see the current vastness of poverty, violence, and discord chiseling away at hope. But what can I, a sixty-something-year-old chef, do? I suppose, if you feel hunger, I can cook for you. Or better, if you don’t know how to cook, I can teach you. If you are in physical pain, I can infuse my food with nature’s medicine and provide you with some relief. But is that enough to bring about hope? Did the meals I prepared for a couple, who had endured serious physical injuries rendering them unable to cook for themselves, heal them? I can’t say for certain. But I can say the energy and healing intentions, along with the cannabis I infused into each dish, gave them a glimmer of hope as they consumed and savored my medicinally crafted meals. The cooking classes I taught to the young residents of a homeless facility didn’t provide them with shelter or beds. Yet, I know every one of those young men and women learned how to “make something out of nothing.” Discovering they possessed the capability to create unique and healthy ways of nourishing themselves in whatever living circumstances they may encounter. Yes, I can say my cooking classes have inspired hope. Do the edibles I prepare for those living with chronic pain, insomnia, PTSD or even terminal illness offer any real cures? No, though I can say without hesitation, the care I take and the thoughts I conjure while preparing those edibles, along with the cannabis, provide real relief. I’ve seen grimaced expressions, furrowed brows, and long creased foreheads dissipate. Replaced with hope. Recalling how Pandora clamped down the lid of her jar, I realize it isn’t just my infused foods that bring hope to those I cook for. Her story shows us, that Elpis, rather hope, remains within. We are the clay pithos. The misery, sorrows, and illnesses Pandora released can never again be pushed back down into the jar. For each of us is sure to experience nearly all of them during our lifetime. Yet, I believe, new beginnings, perspectives, and ideas emerge from those bits and pieces of darkness that sometimes cloud the skies of our hearts and minds because Elpis remains inside. And that maybe, just maybe, good food infused with good medicine can indeed ignite the hope within.

This angered the gods, most of all Zeus. It was decided Prometheus needed to be punished. Thus, he was chained to a rock in the middle of the ocean where a giant eagle swooped down and tore at his liver every day. His liver regenerated overnight but the eagle returned the next morning, and every morning after, lacerating at his liver again and again. The enraged gods didn’t stop there. They further tortured Prometheus by seeking out his brother, Epimetheus, who, unfortunately, wasn’t as intelligent or astute as his elder brother. Easily swayed and influenced, he ignored his brother’s warnings about accepting gifts from the gods. Instead, Epimetheus eagerly received one of the greatest gifts fashioned by the powerful creators, Pandora, the first human woman. It was Zeus who presented Pandora to Epimetheus to serve as his wife. Pandora means “all-gifted” and she was. Each god had given her a great attribute. Aphrodite bestowed beauty upon her. Hermes made her bold and clever. Athena instilled in her knowledge, and Zeus, her most pronounced gift, an insatiable sense of curiosity. All traits the simple-minded Epimetheus would find irresistible. Just days before the wedding, Zeus appeared with a gift for the bride—a large pithos or jar made of clay adorned with ornately painted images and scrolls. A tight-fitting lid secured the contents. Zeus firmly instructed Pandora to never open the closed container. However, this “gift” was given with deception and malice as part of Prometheus’ punishment. Knowing full well Pandora would open the pithos, Zeus had stored inside the Spirits: Oizys (misery), Kakoi (evils), Nosoi (sickness and pandemics), Lugra (distress and annoyance), the three Fates (death, strife and pain), and finally Elpis, the spirit of hope. On her wedding day Pandora succumbed to curiosity and opened the jar, unleashing the maladies within. Terrified and realizing her error, she quickly slammed down the lid just as Elpis was about to fly out. Hope remained inside. But why was Elpis placed in the jar? Why include an uplifting spirit among such powerful and malevolent dispositions? In part, this can be explained by the ancient Greeks’ association of suffering with hope. They believed that suffering could be transformed into hope. That only through suffering does hope emerge. Our modern-day definition of hope is far different. We describe hope as “a feeling of expectation or desire for a certain outcome or object.” Hope is no longer conjoined with suffering, as anyone, of any age, has the capability to call upon Elpis. As a child, I used to hope for things like a new bike or pair of skates. As I matured, so did my hopes. Like hoping my mother wouldn’t hear me come in after curfew. Years later, I desperately hoped my husband, a Navy Seal in the Vietnam War, would come home in one piece. Concurrently,

INGREDIENTS 1-2 Tbsp. canna-butter 1 cup plain Greek yogurt + 4 Tbsp. for garnish 2/3 cup canna-olive oil + 1 Tbsp. 1 tsp. vanilla or almond extract 2/3 cup honey 1 Tbsp. fresh thyme + some for garnish zest of 1 lemon 3 eggs 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp. baking powder

Use 1 Tbsp. canna-oil to grease 9” springform or cake pan. Line pan with parchment paper, then grease paper with canna-butter. In large mixing bowl, whisk together yogurt, 2/3 cup oil, extract, honey, thyme, and lemon zest. Add eggs, one at a time, whisking between additions. Sift in flour, baking powder and soda, and salt, then stir, using wooden spoon until batter is nearly smooth, with minimal lumps. Don’t over mix. Allow batter to set for 1-2 minutes. Scrape batter into prepared pan. Bake 40-45 minutes or until top is golden brown and inserted pick comes out clean. Transfer cake, in pan, onto cooling rack for 7-10 minutes. Remove from pan and allow to cool another 5-7 minutes. Meanwhile, rinse and/or slice choice of berries. Serve cake while still warm, with remaining yogurt and prepared fruit. Scatter top with remaining thyme leaves.

Tree of Life dispensaries donate 70% of profits to local charities Giving back is not new to the Jameson family. It is seemingly seeded in their DNA. For their most recent charitable endeavor, the Jamesons have invested in Nevada’s newest industry. Using the unique business strategy of ‘cannabis with a cause,’ the Jamesons, through their Tree of Life dispensaries, have drawn inspiration from their benevolent roots to grow their latest venture. “At Tree of Life dispensaries, we believe that community is everything and that everyone has an important part to play in creating, uplifting, and giving back to our collective home,” MJ Jameson, marketing and public relations director for Tree of Life dispensaries, explains. When Tree of Life founders and majority owners, the Jameson family moved to the Las Vegas Valley almost 35 years ago, they came with the intention to create a home for their new family as well as establish deep roots in their new community. “Drs. Gard and Florence Jameson helped establish and champion many of the city’s and state’s most important charitable organizations,” explained MJ Jameson. Dr. Gard Jameson is a retired CPA/Certified Financial Planner and professor of philosophy at UNLV. Dr. Florence Jameson is a practicing OB/GYN. The family’s most well-known charitable endeavor is Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada (VMSN). Founded by the Jamesons in 2010, VMSN operates two free clinics in Southern Nevada for adults who lack access to health care, including the working uninsured. Other non-profits supported by the family include Nevada Community Foundation, Children’s Advocacy Alliance, and the Center for Spirituality in Healthcare, among others. When the Jameson children, MJ and Julia, became advocates of cannabis and wanted to join the cannabis industry, the family decided entering the dispensary business could be just another way of giving back to their community. “Our promise at Tree of Life dispensaries is to give 70 percent of our profits back to our community,” MJ Jameson explains. “The Jameson family is proud to give all the profits from their 70 percent majority ownership to outstanding local Nevada charities and community organizations.”

Closing the Circle Top Notch THC’s Kema Ogden endeavors to bring health, fitness, and mental wellness together using a $3.2 million federal grant awarded to non-profit clinic Community Outreach Medical Center by Beth Schwartz

as Vegan Kema Ogden has built her life around taking care of people. “A big passion of mine is the community,” she explains. “I was involved in community service and advocacy work even through college. So, when I had an opportunity to start doing programs in my gym for health and wellness education, I did that and started bringing kids in to focus on the full circle of health, mental wellness, as well as physical health. And that's how it started.” Now at 45 years old Ogden juggles three entities that fit together serendipitously to achieve one common goal: making the Southern Nevada community a better place while providing the underserved with a helping hand. Those in the cannabis world know her as one of the owners of Top Notch The Health Center (THC), a dispensary located on Stephanie Street in Las Vegas. She is also co-founder of Ogden Family Foundation, a Las Vegas 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2008 that provides, among other programs, an After School Enrichment Program called the Ogden Club and a Youth Football Camp to expose and reinforce basic football fundamentals and provide health and wellness education. Finally, Ogden is Executive Director of Community Outreach Medical Center (COMC), a nonprofit clinic founded in 2005 which provides comprehensive healthcare services through an integrated care model. Of the three, it's this last entity that has found its services most crucial in a semi post-COVID pandemic world. In February COMC was awarded a $3.2 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to become a Certified Community Behavioral Health Center and a fully integrated care clinic. “Our focus is to be one of the few certified clinical behavioral health centers with a physical health

component. So, the goal of the city is to really bring in integrated care because mental health is a big issue right now with COVID. This need was an urgent grant situation, and we were one of the recipients,” explains Ogden. “We are now developing a large behavioral health and substance abuse program along with our clinical program so that the Ogden Family Foundation is able to support the clinic by helping to provide physical health services as well as a partnership. My goal was to just bring these things together into the community where we really focus on fitness, wellness, and create a full circle of health together.” Top Notch THC is also a key piece of Ogden’s big-picture puzzle to provide wellness support to the Southern Nevada community. “We sponsor a lot of education pieces, specifically around cannabis education and helping patients that are in need get those holistic options as well, especially with the substance abuse grant now coming into play. Because as we know cannabis is more of an exit drug so, it really comes together in all areas of support between the different organizations that I'm involved in and getting everybody involved in community service and community work and giving back. That's been our formula from the beginning of Top Notch—taking care of people because they'll take care of us and they have come to support us, they shop at our store, they follow us and what we do, and I think they trust us to know that we're looking out for their best interest as opposed to just out there trying to make money.” When Ogden made the decision to apply for a medical marijuana dispensary license in 2014 it was as an extension of what she was already doing. “I felt like it was a no-brainer transition. I owned a gym so was in health and wellness. I had a nonprofit doing service in the community and health and

Curaleaf + Veterans Cannabis Project

Veterans Cannabis Project (VCP) advocates for unrestricted access of medical cannabis for veterans. In 2019, Curaleaf launched a nationwide initiative with VCP to bring additional visibility to this issue and help millions of veterans dealing with chronic pain and other conditions have better access to quality medical cannabis. America’s prolonged military conflicts over the past two decades have exposed an aging and ineffective health care system, ill-prepared for the type and severity of the latest round of war-related injuries. Upwards of 20 percent of the 2.7 million Iraq and Afghanistan veterans will experience post-traumatic stress or depression, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA is not equipped to effectively treat the complexity of every veteran’s mental and physical wounds, leaving former service members to cope with limited and inadequate treatment options. Veterans are often placated with “cocktails” of prescription drugs, including powerful and addictive opiates. The current arrangement is not meeting veterans’ healthcare needs. Cannabis is a proven, safe and common-sense personal health management option, free of the devastating side effects of opiate-based drugs. Finding that medicinal cannabis to be an incredibly effective tool for veterans challenged with managing the symptoms of their wounds, Curaleaf has donated proceeds from cannabis sales to VCP.

Jardín + Buried Alive In honor of Juneteenth earlier this summer Jardín Premium Cannabis Dispensary partnered with Buried Alive project to

help raise awareness surrounding people of color serving draconian sentences due to outdated federal drug laws. “We are seeking to challenge the inequity and change the way the US criminalizes minor drug use and possession, which ensnares far too many people, disproportionately minorities, in the criminal justice system. We are proud to lend our support to the Buried Alive project on their daily fight for freedom,” said Semii Gebreyonas, Jardín’s Director of Marketing. Jardín donated a portion of the proceeds it raised on June 19th to the Buried Alive Project to assist with litigation fees for people of color who have been directly impacted by the criminal legal system. To this point, Buried Alive has assisted over 50 individuals who were facing life sentences with no parole. This initiative is important to Jardín because “we built a foundation of respect, equality and opportunity for both our employees and our community therefore the history of the cannabis industry does not go unnoticed where we recognize that the criminal justice system has failed to progress alongside the sweeping nationwide reform of cannabis laws,” Gebreyonas said.

GTI’s Dogwalkers + animal rescue organizations

Cannabis consumer packaged goods company Green Thumb Industries’ Dogwalkers cannabis brand donated more than $34,000 to five animal rescue organizations earlier this year, including the Las Vegas NSPCA. The donations were made as part of the Bailey Legacy Fund, named in honor of Bailey Buffett Kovler, the beloved dog of Green Thumb (GTI) founder/CEO Ben Kovler and his family. Bailey, who served as the inspiration and face of the Dogwalkers brand, passed away in October 2020 but lives on through the brand she inspired.

“Dogwalkers is proud to provide annual financial support to five incredible animal shelter partners,” said Green Thumb Brand Manager David Bleicher. “For Dogwalkers, a brand that was inspired by the companionship of Ben’s own special pup Bailey, it is only fitting that we created the Bailey Legacy Fund to support nonprofits dedicated to bettering the lives of animals. As part of the SAMHSA grant, COMC must service nine core areas, which includes: crisis mental health; screening, assessment and diagnosis; patient-centered treatment planning; outpatient mental health and substance-use; outpatient clinic primary care screening and monitoring; targeted case management; psychiatric rehabilitation; peer support, counseling and family support, and intensive mental health care for those serving in the military and veterans. “We have such big needs here in Nevada—mental health is a huge issue right now, and nationally, substance abuse, the homeless population as well. Our end goal is to just really help make a dent in what you're seeing and try to reverse some of the issues that are going on with homelessness, and the support and resources that are needed to get people off the streets or get their mental health right or get them access to resources so that people can be more sustainable themselves,” Ogden says. “So, I really hope to see that we can get more help into the community to get people off the street, get people the mental health services that they need, and just keep growing this so that Nevada can really be a safe place for people to live and feel healthy.” Although an ambitious goal to achieve, Ogden has all the right pieces in place now to complete the circle her family started.

As the founder of Ink Ribbon Foundation, Maddi endeavors to gift those who have had mastectomies in the Las Vegas area with either mastectomy scar cover-up tattoos or 3-D areola restorative tattoos. A breast cancer survivor herself, Maddi received a lotus tattoo to cover her mastectomy scars which was an experience that has helped her heal from the inside out. “The emotional scars left behind from cancer can sometimes be overwhelming. After I received my tattoos, not only did I break down and cry, but also felt a sense of relief. Like a great weight was lifted from me and I could finally look in mirror again with a smile on my face. The devastating effects of cancer do not have to haunt you for the rest of your life. You can take back control of your body and your mindset and move forward with confidence,” explained Maddi, who founded Ink Ribbon in 2017. Elevating the Conversation with Shanel Lindsay, attorney, inventor, and founder of Equitable Opportunities Now

hanel Lindsay is a multifaceted cannabis leader who is a mother, Boston-based attorney, cannabis activist, inventor/entrepreneur, and prominent voice for equity in the industry. As an attorney, she worked with a group of lawyers in 2015 to draft a ballot initiative to legalize marijuana in Massachusetts. As an entrepreneur, Lindsay invented Ardent FX, the “easy bake oven” of cannabis. As a dynamic leader, she founded Equitable Opportunities Now, a non-profit that has successfully fought for equitable cannabis policies for Black and Brown people disproportionately harmed by prohibition.

How did you get involved in the cannabis industry? I was kind of thrust into becoming involved in the legal side of cannabis when I was arrested {for possession of trace amounts of cannabis} as a young lawyer. It was an unintentional entrance into the space. That was in 2009 but it wasn't until 2012 that I really made the official decision to venture into the cannabis legal space with my background. And that was when medical marijuana came to Massachusetts, and we were beginning to implement the regulations. That's when I started to be more involved on the regulatory side and finding my place in all of it. What is the mission of Equitable Opportunities Now? EON is a grassroots organization of equity activists in the cannabis space that were from traditional areas—organizers around housing, criminal justice and academics in Massachusetts—just a really strong group of activists from Black and Brown business that really came together to start EON. Obviously it's a play on words, we've been waiting eons for equitable opportunities. All of the folks in EON either own an ancillary business or own a licensed equity business. We use our expertise to advocate for equitable policies to provide technical assistance. I am personally mentoring six equity applicants right now in all stages, whether that's reviewing their legal documents, going over business plans, helping people make pitch decks, etc. We're using our expertise to educate, help and uplift all of the equity entrepreneurs in the space. What EON accomplishment has made you proudest? Fighting for the implementation of equitable policy in Massachusetts. Exclusivity is really important. When I say exclusivity in Massachusetts that means a certain time period for equity applicants to be the only ones to be getting licenses. Just last year, we won that for delivery. So, for the first three years for delivery licenses, the only folks that can get those licenses are economic empowerment, social equity, and small micro businesses. So, creating an equitable landscape for Black and Brown businesses and small

businesses because that is who gets completely stomped out when you see these big corporate entities come in. What is EON’s end goal? To support and advocate for a flourishing, engaged and healthy equity community. The next step is laying the groundwork of the law. But now it's about the regulations and can people actually make it through. Do these equity businesses have the knowledge and network and support that they need in order to be competitive? And how do we as members of the board of EON continue to use the knowledge and expertise that we have to give back and continue to grow that. So I think it's kind of a combination between continuing to advocate and support, and to grow the equity community. Will there be true equity for Black and Brown people in the cannabis industry in your lifetime? I don't think that is a foregone conclusion. To make this industry truly equitable, you would need to scrap it and start all over, which is not happening. But do I think that we will see meaningful ownership and participation? Only if we continue to fight tooth and nail, and only if we are successful at getting real equitable policies at the federal level. That is still a huge question mark whether or not that's going to happen. In my opinion, that's going to dictate whether or not we're going to see anything coming close to the equity we think we're going to achieve. What is the biggest challenge facing the cannabis industry right now? Are the authentic voices in this industry going to rise to the top or are they going to be snuffed out because of corporate interests? What is our character as an industry going to look like at the end of the day? As a brand-new industry, we have the chance to sort of mold the character.
