FOOD AND DRINK

FOOD

In France, food and drinks are always top of mind. Hibou tailors experiences to satisfy various tastes. Whether after local Savoie food or a globally inspired menu, our chef gives you reason to return. We source as much fresh produce locally as possible – your breakfast yogurts and milk come from the independent dairy farm just 100m away. And if you’re a cheese-lover, you’re in the right place. You’ll be spoiled for choice between Beaufort, Tomme de Savoie, fresh goat’s cheese, the list goes on…

DRINK

Here, eating without drinking is faux pas. Whatever your tipple, we’ll mix it—from rare wine cepage to typical and homemade Génépi. Made with a local flower which grows between an altitude of 2500m and 3200m in certain parts of the European Alps, Génépi is a ‘digestif’ which is commonly enjoyed after a meal. It has a lovely flavour of herbs and it is a strong alcohol.

France has wines of every style and quality level coming from hunderds of unique appellations across the country. With French winemakers having spent centuries cultivating the grapevine and giving attention to the minute differences between wines made from the various vineyards, its no surprise that France holds the reputation of being on the top wine producers in the world. Allow our resident wine experts take you on a journey of varietals at your next meal.

All house alcohol is included in your stay at Chalet Hibou. We have an excellent selection of craft brews and spirits, and all of your traditional favorites at the Chalet bar. There is also a reserve list available for purchase.

ABOUT LE MIROIR

14

A BRIEF HISTORY

Characterized by its sweeping Alpine views, authentic French culture, and historic architectural charm, Sainte Foy Tarentaise is a region that has stayed true to its roots and is seemingly unspoiled by the modern world. With settlers dating back to the 5th millennial B.C. era, the area got its name when it was evangelized by Jaques de Tarentaise in the 5th century. Few locations have such vast and contrasting ranges in altitudes with the lowest point sitting at 890 meters and the highest point, the La Grande Sassière, reaching up to 3,746 meters.

Sprawling over 11,000 hectares and straddling both France and Italy, the Tarentaise Valley and its many hamlets has always offered an amazing array of ski opportunities. The area has been described as one of the birthplaces of skiing and is home to the almost century old ski club formally called, “Union Sportive La Tarine”.

Farming and pastoralism have always been present in the region. Cows and sheep roamed the valley floors, and local cheeses like Beaufort and Tome were made from the valley’s resources. Persillé, a raw goat’s milk cheese and a local favorite, first

appeared in the 18th century and is still created today using the original process.

Le Miroir, a charming village located in the Tarentaise Valley, is distinguished by its pillar houses. With the earliest existence documented as far back as 1633, these historic dwellings were crafted by the Piedmontese masons with the help of the local landowners using locally sourced wood and stone. Builders carefully designed these structures using large pillars and wide roof overhangs to create well vented, covered areas where farmers could store hay and wood, as well as find protection from the elements themselves.

Today, the traditional ways of the past are still prevalent in the region. Cows, sheep, and goats can be seen grazing quietly throughout the mountain pastures, and column houses and sweet chapels dot the village landscape. Restaurants and bars now fill the towns, and tourism is becoming one of the main contributors to the valley’s economy as people flock to the area to enjoy the rich natural beauty, the authentic culture, and the endless amounts of outdoor adventures.

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

Tucked high up in the tiny village of Le Miroir, Chalet Hibou is nestled between the rugged peaks of the French Alps. On and off-piste trails wind past centuries-old churches and snow capped mountains. The weather in the region can change quickly and temperatures vary based on time of day and placement of the sun. You can expect to experience the high-altitude chill both in the morning and evening hours. Crisp mornings give way to abundant sunshine and warmer afternoon temperatures. NEED TO KNOW

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

As a member of the European Union, France uses the Euro as its sole form of currency. The US Dollar is not accepted in France.

CASH AND CREDIT CARDS

We suggest you take some cash in the form of Euros to France for taxis, tips, and other items if you will be spending any time in the country before or after your Chalet Hibou experience. It is also recommended that you notify your credit card companies that you will be traveling internationally.

Visa and Mastercard are usually accepted at restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions in France. Smaller shops and markets in the country sometimes only take cash. Tips and gratuities are usually only taken in cash.

LOCAL LANGUAGE

The official language of France is French.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

For visitors, entry requirements differ slightly depending on place of birth, length of stay and what items accompany the traveler. All persons entering France must travel with a passport that is three months or more from expiration beyond their planned date of departure from the Schengen Area. Travelers should also have in their possession a return or onward journey ticket, and proof of funds to support the traveler during their visit. Tourist visas are not required for stays under 90 days.

CELL SERVICES

Check with your cell phone provider before your trip to see if they provide international service in France. Some companies have inexpensive travel plans that will give you full cell phone service while traveling internationally, but you have to sign up before you leave.

24

ELECTRICAL

CURRENT

Electrical outlets in France and at Chalet Hibou deliver power at 220-240 volts. This is much stronger than most North American sockets, which typically deliver 110-120 volts. Plugging a North American device into an outlet in France could result in damage to the item or start a fire. While North American outlets typically use type A or B plugs, outlets in France require type E. We recommend bringing a power adapter for type E sockets to avoid any problems with powering your devices.

CHECK IN TIME

Check-in time is 3 pm and check out time is 10 am at Chalet Hibou. We will do our best to accommodate early arrivals or late departures, but we will not know if this will be possible until close to the date of your stay. Please communicate with the Experience Team to coordinate early or late check-ins and check-outs.

GRATUITIES AND TIPPING

Eleven does not impose mandatory gratuities. Tipping the guides and staff is optional, but if you decide you would like to, you will have the opportunity to leave gratuity in the form of cash or add it to your final invoice at the end of your stay.

GENERAL TIPPING STANDARDS Tipping is more of a gesture than an obligation in France. While tipping is not always expected, it is greatly appreciated. Servers often receive from €1 to €3 at a casual cafe to 5 percent of the bill at a higher-end establishment. Bartenders should receive a few Euro per round, depending on the amount of drinks ordered, while tour guides typically receive 15% of the overall bill as a gratuity.

PAYMENT AND CANCELLATION POLICY

Please refer to our website for updated information regarding our deposit and cancellation policy: https:// elevenexperience.com/cancellation-policies

TRIP INSURANCE

WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND the purchase of trip cancellation insurance. The Eleven team can help you arrange trip cancellation insurance with Global Rescue. Please ask your sales representative for more information.

LOCAL TIMEZONE

Le Miroir adheres to the Central European Summer Time (CEST) zone.

COVID-19 UPDATE

The safety of our guests and team members is our number one concern. For information on steps we are taking to protect the health and safety of our guests and employees, please visit our COVID-19 Update Page: https://elevenexperience.com/COVID-19-Update/
