Ranked! The Premier League’s 11 best deadline day deals EVER We all love a good deadline day saga. Clubs spending ludicrous sums of cash on players they’ve never heard of, fax machines mysteriously breaking down and windows rolling up and down in an endless loop of car-based interviews.

Not even all of this trolley dashing turns out to be bad. As these brilliant deadline day signings prove...

11. Asmir Begovic: Portsmouth to Stoke, 2010 (£3m) After a handful of Premier League appearances for Portsmouth and string of loan spells in England’s lower leagues, the Bosnian signed for Stoke in the 2010 January transfer window and grew in stature from there. While he conceded five goals against Chelsea on debut two months after signing, Begovic improved and eventually established himself as one of the best young goalkeepers in the league. In November 2013 he also set a Guinness World Record for the longest goal scored, getting on the scoresheet from almost the full length of the pitch against Southampton. In five-and-a-half seasons at Stoke, Begovic made 173 appearances and kept 50 clean sheets, before departing for Chelsea in summer 2015.

10 | EK MAG | ISSUE 11, January 2021

10. Lucas Moura – PSG to Tottenham, 2018 (£23m) Getting a 25-year-old Brazil international with bags of top-level experience for less than £25m? An absolute masterstroke from Daniel Levy & Co., who never would have envisaged the impact Lucas would later make in helping Spurs to the 2019 Champions League Final. For a year-and-a-half he was Tottenham’s only signing, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side did just fine without additional recruits to make the Madrid showpiece against all odds. It was Lucas’s stunning hat-trick against Ajax in the semi-finals second leg that got Spurs there in the first place; the most most remarkable contribution of an otherwise solid career in north London backing up Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Ranked! The Premier League’s 11 best deadline day deals EVER

9. Jermain Defoe – West Ham to Tottenham, 2004 (£7m, part exchange) Defoe enjoyed two stints at White Hart Lane, with a spell with Portsmouth sandwiched in between. In his first (a deal where Bobby Zamora went the other way), the English striker made 177 appearances and scored 64 times, and was named the Spurs’ player of the year for 2004 having only joined in January of that season. Tottenham at that time were still considered a mid-table club, but with the help of Defoe’s contributions they eventually started to knock on the door for qualification into Europe.

8. Marouane Fellaini: Standard Liege to Everton, 2008 (£15m) Fellaini made an instant impact in England after joining Everton in September 2008 – not because of his unique hairstyle or flailing elbows, but thanks to his ability to cause chaos inside opposition boxes bombing forward from midfield. He was named the club’s young player of the year in his debut campaign and gradually established himself at Premier League level under David Moyes’s tutelage. In five years in the blue half of Merseyside, he made 177 appearances and scored 33 times.

7. Robbie Keane: Leeds to Tottenham, 2002 (£7m) It’s fair to say that Leeds probably should have asked a bigger fee from Tottenham for Keane. At just £7m, the Irish striker was an absolute steal – not least as he’d cost Coventry £6m in 1999, Inter Milan £13m a season later, and then Leeds £12m in May 2001. Keane spent nine years at White Hart Lane over two spells between 2002 and 2011, broken up by a six-month stint with Liverpool (from which Spurs received £19m), plus loans at Celtic and West Ham. In 303 appearances he scored 122 goals – enough for him to rank among the top 10 goalscorers in Spurs history... until Harry Kane came along. That he was named Spurs’ player of the season three times – including in his debut campaign – outlines the Irishman’s

It wasn’t a surprise, then, when Moyes brought him to Old Trafford via another deadline-day signing in 2013. That time it cost him almost £28m, though – and the wrath of Manchester United fans. Not least as his £23m release clause had expired at the end of July. ISSUE 11, January 2021 | EK MAG | 11

up William Gallas as part of the deal, but what Cole helped the club achieve more than proved his worth.

6. Carlos Tevez & Javier Mascherano: Corinthians to West Ham, 2006 (Undisc.)

In eight years at Stamford Bridge, the ex-England international won as many major honours, including one Premier League crown, four FA Cups and the 2012 Champions League – Chelsea’s first ever triumph in the competition. In total, he made 338 appearances and scored seven times.

Jaws dropped when West Ham signed the Argentine duo, who arrived at Upton Park with pedigree and promise. Mascherano, then 22, struggled to establish himself (famously falling behind Hayden Mullins in the pecking order) and left on loan to Liverpool in January 2007 – although he netted West Ham a huge £18.5m when the move was made permanent at the end of that season. Tevez, on the other hand, almost singlehandedly saved the Hammers from relegation. With 10 games to go and the east Londoners languishing in the bottom

4. Hugo Lloris: Lyon to Tottenham, 2012 (£8m)

three, he scored seven times – including the all-important winner against Manchester United at Old Trafford on the final day of the season – to help West Ham claim seven victories and finish three points above the drop zone.

5. Ashley Cole: Arsenal to Chelsea, 2006 (£5m) Cole can be considered one of the greatest bargains in Chelsea’s history, having moved to Stamford Bridge for just £5m. Granted, the Blues had to give 12 | EK MAG | ISSUE 11, January 2021

Lloris was once touted as a potential rival to Manuel Neuer as the best goalkeeper in the world, so it was surprising when Tottenham managed to sign him for a relatively cheap £8m in 2012. Since then, the French goalkeeper has become captain of both club and country, leading from the back with command and consistency – as he demonstrated during France’s victorious World Cup campaign. At 31, time is still on his side too – and Spurs can only stand to benefit further.

Ranked! The Premier League’s 11 best deadline day deals EVER

3. Claude Makelele: Real Madrid to Chelsea, 2003 (£16m) Makelele was often referred to as the most important player within a Real Madrid team filled with Galacticos, to the point that even the usually-reserved Zinedine Zidane aired his disgruntlement when his compatriot was sold to Chelsea in 2003. In total, he made 217 appearances for the Blues and became an essential element of Jose Mourinho’s dominant team that claimed back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006 – so much that a position on the pitch was named in his honour. In his final season in London, he helped guide Chelsea (then under Avram Grant) into their first ever Champions League final... where they lost on penalties to Manchester United.

earned cult hero status, helping Liverpool fans move on swiftly from Fernando Torres. While he couldn’t quite guide the Reds to the title – they fell just short in Suarez’s last season of 2013/14 – he did help them win the League Cup in 2012 and earned a host of individual honours, including Liverpool Player of the Season twice and the PFA Player of the Year in 2014. His eventual transfer to Barcelona also netted Liverpool a hefty profit in the region of £42m.

1. Wayne Rooney: Everton to Man United, 2004 (£20m) The images of Rooney as a teenage tyro are long faded, but for a decade he was essential to Manchester United’s cause as they dominated the Premier League and triumphed on the continent.

2. Luis Suarez: Ajax to Liverpool, 2010 (£22.8m) Forget the controversies for a second: Suarez’s signing was one of the greatest deals in Liverpool’s history, at a time when they were making many bad ones. In four seasons on Merseyside, the Uruguayan scored 82 goals in 133 appearances and

By the time of his return to first club Everton in 2017, Rooney had 253 goals at Old Trafford – making him the club’s all time record goalscorer – and 11 major honours to his name. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year three times, was the PFA Player’s Player of the Year in 2009/10, PFA Fans’ Player of the Year twice and the PFA Young Player of the Year twice. A bona fide Stretford legend. source

Why is Ozil wearing No. 67 at Fenerbahce? The former Arsenal midfielder had an unusual shirt choice at his new club, but there is a connection to his family’s history Mesut Ozil’s long-awaited Arsenal departure finally was confirmed on Sunday, with the now-former Gunners star making the move to Turkey to join boyhood club Fenerbahce. Having been excluded from Arsenal’s Premier League squad, Ozil and the Gunners agreed to terminate the midfielder’s £350,000-a-week contract six months early, paving the way for his move to Turkey. As he left the Emirates, Ozil said he would be a “Gunner for life”, adding that it was not a permanent goodbye to what he called “a club of class and prestige”.

Now, though, Ozil has joined a club he has supported for years, Fenerbahce, taking a pay cut to do so. Ozil is set to earn €3 million (£2.5m/$3.5m) a year at Fenerbahce after being paid an annual salary of €16m (£14m/$19m) at Arsenal. His salary sacrifice paved the way to a club close to his heart, and Ozil says he is embracing the pressure that comes with playing for that club. “There is always pressure on a football player. I always played in big clubs, and there was always pressure,” he said at his unveiling. “Fenerbahce is also a big club and I know there will be pressure here. This is a club I love very much. I will do my best. I hope everything will be fine.” 14 | EK MAG | ISSUE 11, January 2021

Why is Ozil wearing No. 67 at Fenerbahce? At Wednesday’s unveiling, Ozil revealed a new shirt number, 67, having previously been Arsenal’s No. 10. The No. 67 shirt is certainly far from a traditional choice, but it was one made due to a personal connection for Ozil. Why did Ozil choose the No. 67 shirt? Ozil’s fondness for the number appears to stem from the first two digits of the postal code of his family’s hometown of Zonguldak in Turkey. The 32-year-old midfielder was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany and is a thirdgeneration Turkish-German. As a result of his upbringing, Ozil grew up supporting Fenerbahce, while his boyhood hero was the club’s legendary forward Ridvan Dilmen. Ozil’s family hails from Hışıroğlu, a village in the district that has the postal code 67802. And, despite more traditional numbers like 19, 21, 22, 23 and 24 being available,

source: goal.com

Ozil appears to have paid tribute to his family’s home via his shirt number. Prior to taking the shirt, Ozil hinted that he could claim 67 as his own with a tweet. The number isn’t the highest one in the squad, though, with No. 71 Ismail Yuksek, No. 77 Gokhan Gonul, No. 88 Caner Erkin and No. 99 Kemal Ademi all having higher shirt numbers.

The 10 most improved players in the Premier League this season At the midway point of the 2020-21 campaign, we’re reviewing the players who have made the biggest improvements over the last few months. To qualify, the players must have made at least 10 appearances both this season and last season.

10) Mason Mount, Chelsea Mason Mount had good reason to feel aggrieved when he was dropped by Thomas Tuchel for the new manager’s first game in charge of Chelsea. Mount has been the team’s standout performer this season. A change in system led to him being benched for the goalless draw against Wolves but its Mount’s tactical flexibility that has been most impressive of late. He has excelled in a deeper role, with his tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes more than doubling this season. He is also creating more chances for teammates. Rating: 7.37 up 0.46 on last season

9) Solly March, Brighton Solly March is another player whose adaptability has been a real asset for his club this season. He has performed admirably, whether at a wing-back or further forward. Having played a bitpart role for Brighton last season, the 26-year-old has now become a mainstay, scoring twice and improving in and out of possession. His averages for tackles (2.5), key passes (1.4) and dribbles (2.5) per 90 minutes have all improved dramatically, with the latter almost double what he managed last season. Rating: 7.07, up 0.48 on last season

16 | EK MAG | ISSUE 11, January 2021

The 10 most improved players in the Premier League this season

8) Che Adams, Southampton Having taken time to settle on the south coast, Che Adams has more than convinced Ralph Hasenhüttl that he deserves to be playing for Southampton. He flourished in a front two at Birmingham City and his link-up play has been just as pivotal at Southampton this season. His tally of four league goals may seem modest, but he has already equalled his total from last season – and his four assists this season is double what he managed in his debut campaign. His pressing has improved and he is setting up more chances for teammates. Rating: 6.94, up 0.48 on last season

7) Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur It may seem odd to see a player of Harry Kane’s calibre in a most improved countdown, but his output in the final third has rocketed this season after a somewhat modest campaign by his standards last time out. His tally of 12 goals is not extraordinary for Kane, but his total of 11 league assists certainly is given that he managed just two last season. His partnership with Son Heung-Min has been irresistible. Not only is he setting up more goals, but he is also picking up goalscoring positions more frequently, averaging 3.7 shots per 90 minutes this season compared to just 2.8 in 2019-20. Rating: 7.83, up 0.50 on last season

6) Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Everton Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a blistering start to the campaign, scoring seven goals in his first five league games. He has not scored in the league since before Christmas but, even still, his tally of 11 league goals is just two short of what he produced in the entirety of last season. His hold-up play has also developed; having completed just 64% of his passes last season, Calvert-Lewin has found a teammate with 72.3% of his passes this time around, which is a substantial improvement. Rating: 7.37, up 0.50 on last season ISSUE 11, January 2021 | EK MAG | 17

The 10 most improved players in the Premier League this season

5) Oriol Romeu, Southampton Oriol Romeu may not get the headlines but he has played a vital role alongside James Ward-Prowse in the Southampton midfield. His recent injury has allowed summer signing Ibrahima Diallo to stake his claim for a starting place but it will be difficult for Hasenhüttl to leave out a fully fit Romeu. He ranks second for tackles in the league this season (3.6 per 90 minutes) and has even chipped in with a goal and an assist – the latter being the first of his professional career! Rating: 7.08, up 0.53 on last season

3) Jack Grealish, Aston Villa

4) John Stones, Manchester City John Stones is a real candidate for the surprise package of the season. When Manchester City spent more than £100m on new centre-backs Nathan Aké and Rúben Dias last summer, it looked as if Stones would be leaving the club. Instead he has taken the place of Aymeric Laporte – one of the best defenders in the league in recent times – and formed a sensational partnership with Dias. Stones’ stunning pass accuracy of 93.8% is top of the league, but he knew he was a great passer of the ball. The key difference this season is that he has eradicated the errors that once plagued his game. On top of that, he has scored two goals and been an integral part of a defence that has conceded just two goals in his 11 league appearances. Rating: 7.21, up 0.53 on last season 18 | EK MAG | ISSUE 11, January 2021

Jack Grealish was good last season, but his performances this time around have gone to a new level entirely. He has had a direct hand in 14 goals so far this season (scoring six and setting up eight more); that’s as many as he achieved in the whole of last season. He is taking more shots, creating more chances and completing more dribbles than last season and he continues to be the most fouled player in the division by a country mile. His rating of 7.86 makes him the best performer in the Premier League this season, having ranked 20th last time around. Rating: 7.86, up 0.64 on last season

The 10 most improved players in the Premier League this season

2) Ilkay Gündogan, Manchester City When Pep Guardiola said last year that Ilkay Gündogan could potentially play up front in the absence of Sergio Agüero, it did not seem like a serious option. However, his current form suggests Guardiola was on to something. The midfielder has scored seven goals in his last eight league appearances, having scored just two in total last season. The quality of his finishing has been superb too, matched with moments of skill we had never really seen from him before either. He is completing twice as many dribbles this season compared to last season. Rating: 7.36, up 0.65 on last season

1) Pedro Neto, Wolves Having understandably taken some time to find his feet in England, Pedro Neto has been the one shining light in a dismal season for Wolves. The 20-year-old improved as his debut campaign wore on but he has stepped up another level recently, which was essential given the departure of Diogo Jota and absence

source: theguardian.com

of Raúl Jiménez. He has scored four goals and laid on three assists, but those numbers do not tell the whole story. His workrate and teamwork have been exceptional, averaging 1.4 interceptions (up from 0.6), 2.1 key passes (up from 1.4) and a brilliant 88.1% pass accuracy. Rating: 7.14, up 0.69 on last season
