EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome

I don’t know about you, but I love a bargain! And even more so if it looks like it cost a fortune. So when I saw our Luxe vs Less decorating feature (p40), I had to stop myself reaching for my purse and snapping everything up! We are always on the hunt for budgetfriendly ideas and this issue we also show you affordable ways to bring the Serene Summer trend (p22) into your home; how to get a taste of the good life and cut your bills (p106); and lots of tricks to save money in the garden – from our Smarter Shopper guide (p15) to thrifty upcycling projects (p64). For more outdoors inspiration, turn to our three beautiful garden room makeovers (I am particularly jealous of Maya Sen’s colourful, multipurpose space) from page 28. And on page 44 we show you how to take the indoors out, and create an outdoor living area – it’s easier than you might think, and the perfect place to relax with your favourite magazine… If you’re planning a staycation this summer and camping’s on the cards, then don’t miss our Buyer’s Guide (p110) – we’ll make sure you’ve got everything you need. And you might also want to sew our roll-up picnic blanket (p66), which will come in handy for lunches away from the campsite.

@casa_de_modelei Boasting a whopping 90 plants, Leila and Fleur’s home is a botanical paradise. Lovers of pastel colours and mid-century furniture, the couple achieve a harmonious blend of old and new. Plus, their space is rented – just goes to show what you can achieve when you pour your heart into it!

Wren Kitchens created a calming space for our busy family lifestyle ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Leila and Carl Eldred wanted a functional, open-plan kitchen that could bring the whole family together, including their two young boys and pet dog The family instantly fell in love with the light-toned and functional Country Ermine kitchen in Pebble when they visited Wren’s showroom

he kitchen today serves more purpose than simply somewhere to cook and eat – it’s now a multifunctional space in the centre of the home, in which family and friends can spend quality time together. Expert designers at Wren Kitchens understand that everyone’s lifestyle is different, so their kitchens need to function differently, too. No matter the size or layout of your kitchen, Wren will work closely with you to create a tailor-made design that suits your lifestyle. busy lifestyle at home with their two young boys and pet Rottweiler, Harlow, so a space that was calming and could bring the whole family together was top priority when it came to updating their kitchen. e previous space was dimly lit and narrow with a separate dining room, so when they walked into their local Wren Kitchens showroom in Royal Tunbridge Wells they were on the lookout for a bright kitchen with a functional open-plan layout. ‘We had a look around all the different kitchens in the showroom and fell in love with the Country Ermine kitchen straight away,’ says Leila.

‘It even had a pet bed feature – I didn’t know I wanted one before’, she smiles. ‘It’s such a good idea! Now Harlow can enjoy his very own space, safely tucked away when I’m cooking.’

STEP TWO Leila knew she wanted a large

kitchen sink in the island as a focal point so she could oversee the kitchen, rather than having her back turned. e couple also decided to get all new appliances through Wren. ‘We’re so happy with what we chose,’ says Leila. ‘We’ve got a dishwasher, which comes in really handy with having two kids, and the wine cooler is great for us when entertaining – we love having people over now,’ she adds.

Maximise the social aspect of the kitchen like Leila has, with a central island that features a sink, breakfast bar and wine cooler A pet bed is a handy feature for this busy family kitchen; Harlow now has a neat, tucked away spot in the heart of the home and it provides useful storage for her toys and bowl

another standout to Leila. ‘It was absolutely fantastic – Wren bought everything in for me, placed it where I wanted it and checked it all off,’ explains Leila. Now, the spacious kitchen is the most used room in the Eldreds’ home, where they can eat all their meals together and entertain family and friends on a regular basis. During summer, they can open the bi-fold doors and enjoy spending quality time all together. ‘e kitchen’s really become the heart of our home now there’s so much room for both of us, the kids and Harlow – it’s perfect.’

GARAGE GLAM

I love receiving your magazine each month and seeing everyone’s renovations. Our garage was leaking and needed a new roof, so we decided to completely change it to give our family a chilled area for reading and relaxing. It now gets used daily! Georgina Gill, by email

Letter mofonththe

Hallway heaven I was inspired by your ‘DIY Updates for

Weekend Decorating’ to add a radiator cover in my hallway. My partner is in the military and often away, so I like to keep busy until he returns. I purchased the MADE.com pendant light a while ago and felt the plain walls and outdated radiator didn’t do it justice. Due to the radiator’s size, I did go slightly over my £250 budget. However, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed dressing it and the prints on the wall make me smile. It’s wonderful to see what can be achieved in such a short time! Elizabeth Edwards, by email

Revamp my fire

I love your magazine – it inspired me to transform my fireplace! I made the candle holders with cement and spray paint. I also made the heart decoration out of twigs and reused an old basket for wood storage. My room looks so fresh now and I’ve saved money in the process by upcycling. Stacy Chapman, by email Your Home says: Stacy, your fireplace looks gorgeous! We love the silver accents, especially your homemade candle holders.

Sep up

While sorting out my dad’s shed l came across my grandad’s old stepladder and some of my dad’s old ceramic plant pots. Using some paint I already had in my cupboard, plant stand for the garden. This is the result; I know my dad would have loved the stand as he was a keen gardener, and it brings back lovely memories when I look at it. Sarah Swift, by email Your Home says: This is such a charming use of your grandad’s stepladder, Sarah. It brings such a lovely burst of colour to your garden, and we love the addition of the cheery birdhouse at the top.

Freshen up your home with our handy tips and tricks

HOW TO... make your house a poen-fr zone Hay fever can be a real nuisance during the warmer months. If you’re a sufferer, follow our top tips to keep your home free of pollen and other airborne allergens…

Buy it once

in a breeze, we’d recommend that you keep your windows and doors closed as much as possible during hay fever season. If you really need to open them, avoid the morning and evening as this is when the pollen count is highest. Instead, you could invest in an air conditioner. Max Wiseberg, Airborne Allergens Expert at HayMax, recommends choosing one ‘with a HEPA filter to capture the pollen particles, cool and circulate the air.’

If you’re a regular baker or like to host weekend brunches, you butter get your hands on this. The Fiori Green Leaf ceramic butter dish, £19.50 from Oliver Bonas, delivers on both the style and practicality fronts. The ceramic dish is adorned with delicate leaf details and an opulent gold-toned handle. It’s sure to last a lifetime – just be careful no one knocks it off the side!

• Put your vacuum into overdrive; a daily blitz of

the house will make a big difference. Make sure to focus on beds and fabrics where allergens quickly build up, and dust surfaces with a damp cloth so that you don’t cast pollen back into the air.

• Avoid hanging your laundry to dry outside.

Although hanging it inside on a clothes airer is less convenient, it’ll ensure that minimal pollen gets onto your clothes. It’s also wise to remove your clothes and have a quick wash as soon as you arrive home to prevent any allergens transferring to your sofa or bed.

To deep clean your oven without using harsh chemicals, combine 6 tbsp bicarbonate of soda with 1 tbsp washing-up liquid and as much water as is needed to make a smooth paste. Once well combined, apply a thin layer to your oven’s surfaces and leave to work its magic overnight. In the morning, scrub the paste off, focusing on those more stubborn areas. Spray with white vinegar and scrub again to cut through any grease, then rinse and wipe clean with a cloth.

Things we considered: Did it toast evenly? Is it well designed? Any special functions?

Swan Nordic two-slice toaster in Blue, £40, AO.com This is a toaster you’ll want to put in prime position on your worktop! With its simple Scandi style, blue hue (also available in Green, Grey and White) and the fact that it toasts wonderfully, it’s a real winner. It has six timer settings and the usual defrost function, but we particularly love its ‘reheat’ setting – very handy for forgotten slices – and its satisfying push-release crumb tray, which is easy to empty to keep the toaster clean.

8/10

Two-slice toaster in Vintage Rose, £60, Cuisinart The kitchen embodiment of ‘pretty in pink’, this toaster is definitely the most stylish of the bunch. Combining gleaming stainless steel with a metallic rose shade, this toaster not only looks the part, but performs well, too. Its extra deep toasting slots ensure that bread toasts evenly in less than two minutes. It even has bagel and defrost functions, the latter of which is ideal for those who live on their own and don’t manage to get through a whole loaf of bread!

9/10

Verve Black toaster, £39.99, Morphy Richards Both sleek and functional, the Verve toaster boasts four toasting slots so is ideal for busy mornings when all the family need to get out the door quickly. The removable crumb tray facilitates easy cleaning, and the variable browning control ensures that you can toast to your desired level of golden. As with lots of toasters, it failed to toast the very top part of our bread slices, but it is a practical and affordable option that’s perfect for growing families.

7/10

Breville Flow collection fourslice toaster, £33, AO.com This stylish, four-slice toaster is great for a family’s toasting needs. There are nine browning levels for you to choose from – to get your toast just how you like it! With variable width slots for different bread sizes and crumpets, the toaster did struggle to fit sliced bagels. Light-up buttons make this easy to use, and the extra lift is handy when toasting farmhouse bread. We liked its ribbed design and it’s a great budget option.

Gardening is a great way to get out in the sunshine and add colour to your outdoor area, and it needn’t be an expensive hobby – enjoy a flourishing garden on a budget with these easy ideas that’ll do good for the environment, too. Repurpose boxes and containers. Rather than buying seed trays and pots, use recycled packaging instead. ‘Toilet roll tubes are biodegradable and can be used as a container for seedlings,’ says Gena Lorainne, Gardening Expert at Fantastic Services. ‘And cardboard can even be used instead of weed killer. Trim the grass to the ground level, lay down the cardboard and soak well with a hose. Cover with rocks and, after a few months, there will be no weeds in that area.’ Recycle your grass clippings. After mowing the lawn, don’t bin the clippings – instead, leave them on the lawn, use them for composting, or even add a layer to flowerpots to help keep roots cool and preserve moisture. ‘Grass clippings can hold up to 30 per cent of your lawn’s required nutrients. They’ll release water and nutrients back into the soil, provide shade, and FOR slow the formation of thatch,’ says Scott Hawthorne, MORE MONEYManaging Director at skipsandbins.com. Pensions

The world of pensions can seem daunting but it makes sense to pay into one now so that you can reap the rewards later on

MAKE SURE... you

chse the best pension for you

Pensions are long-term savings plans that you pay into now so that you have money when you retire. As well as the state pension, which is currently up to £179.60 a week, you can also pay into a work pension or take out a personal policy or do both…

Frequently asked questions. . When can I claim my pension? You can usually start taking money from your pension at 55, well before you receive the state pension at 66 (as of April 2021). You will be able to draw a tax-free sum, but schemes vary so do check. Taking some money out at 55 allows you to top up a salary, work fewer hours or retire early.

How much should I be paying in?

The advice from Money Saving Expert is to take the age you start your pension and halve it – then put this as a percentage of your pre-tax salary into a pension every year until you retire. So a 32-year-old should be saving 16 per cent of their wages every month.

allow you to transfer your pension pot to another plan, so there’s no need to worry if you change employers. Just check to see if there’s a transfer fee.

Can I take my pension at 55 and still work? Yes, there is no set

retirement age anymore so you can carry on working and access any private pensions. You can also draw your state pension from 66 and continue to work.

If you do one thing..

Revolutionary technology can help cut the carbon footprint of our homes. Take control of your energy bills with a smart meter

W

ithin the past year or so, many of us have had the time to take a second look at our homes, or indeed a third and fourth. Previously, five-day working weeks, office commutes, the school run and the hustle and bustle of everyday life took up lots of time and energy. With life now more centred around the home, we can devote more of our time to tweaking and elevating our interiors. When you do manage to turn your attention to sprucing up your pad, the options today are limitless. Thanks to clever innovations, you can visualise paint colours, pieces of furniture and other items in your home before you’ve bought them. There are so many switches you can make to improve your home’s look and feel, but how about its carbon footprint? Getting a smart meter installed could not only help you cut down on your domestic energy waste, but also take control of your gas and electricity bills and start to save money. Want to know how? Read on to find out more.

The future is smart

Designing the future When it comes to planning out our

home spaces, the age-old issue has always been the inability to see the size of an object in situ before we buy it. Let’s say you’re finally treating yourself to a brand-new sofa for the living room. You can get the tape measure out and compare against the product specifications all you want, but there’s simply no substitute for seeing exactly how the shape, colour and texture of it interacts with the rest of the space – until now. Today, many interior and furniture retailers offer CAD (computer-aided design) technology, which allows you to see exactly what a piece will look like in your chosen room. Some have apps that allow you to plot out the exact measurements and shape of your room and create your dream space, swapping out accessories and pieces of furniture until you get the perfect look. Many more paint suppliers have online features that will allow you to take a picture of your room and virtually paint the walls with your chosen colour. It’s staggering how far home innovation has come in such a short space of time.

Modern technology has truly opened up a whole new world of possibilities for decorating our homes. But what about the way they run? That’s where smart meters come in. When you get one installed by your energy supplier, its handy in-home display – a handheld digital device that sits in your home – will show you in nearreal time how much energy you’re using, as well as how much it’s costing you. So when you start making changes around the home, you’ll start to see the benefits with your own eyes. For example, choosing an A+++ fridge freezer over an A+ unit will save you about £190 in energy bills over the 17-year lifetime of the product. By getting a smart meter, you’ll be joining the millions of people across Britain who are doing their bit to reduce energy waste on a national scale. And that all adds up to an energy system that’s better at coping with the demands of the 21st century, while also making the best and most efficient use of renewable energy sources like wind and solar power.

If every UK household took action on energy efficiency now, we could save up to

54 million tonnes of CO2

TREND ALERT…

Keep your cool by decorating your home with relaxing natural tones and textures, plus the latest subtle nods to the season

e may like to welcome the heat and sunshine outdoors during the summer, but our interiors are often the place we want to retreat to and cool down at this time of year. As well as more practical additions such as shuttered windows and fans dotted about the place, our home décor can also help to create a calm haven indoors when we need it. Palm-prints and coastal motifs will make your space feel in-season, but pair with pale, earthy shades for a more refined look. ‘Bringing a sense of peace, soft tones such as plaster pink, sun-baked terracotta and olive green have a restful effect that will add an elegant and comforting touch to bedrooms and dining areas,’ explains Kathryn Lloyd, Crown Paints Colour Consultant. ‘While an individual shade might look too overpowering for a soothing scheme, incorporating a few tones can work surprisingly well at balancing the overall look. Whether opting for neutrals or muted contrasting shades, combining two or three different colours will maintain the calm while adding charm to the room.’ ink about the materials you bring into your serene scheme, too. Textured designs like macramé not only provide a relaxed, boho style but also help to create a cosy space. Use aromas to bring everything together – look out for fresh and calming notes of eucalyptus and mint, or even ocean scents, and allow your mind to escape to a relaxing place. GARDEN ROOM MAKEOVER

‘I mixed tropical and art deco for a luxe look’ Becky Weaver combined upcycled furniture, tropical accessories and a bold colour palette to brighten up her basic, neutral conservatory

W

hen looking to move at the end of 2020, Becky Weaver knew she wanted somewhere bigger than her previous home. Although not her usual type of property, she took a chance on seeing this relatively new build and was taken aback by how much she liked it. ‘I loved the house as soon as I viewed it, which took me by surprise as I’d always lived in older properties, and this had a neat, clean, tidy finish,’ she explains. ‘I was totally blown away by the space and amount of light and fell in love with the conservatory, which really sold it for me.’ e basics were all there, but it was in need of some colour and character.

creativity to make the most of the space. ‘Because we were in and out of lockdown, I really wanted to make the conservatory area work for me. I knew I’d be able to spend time in there chilling out as the weather was so awful at that time and I wouldn’t be spending as much time in the garden,’ says Becky.

WHAT WAS UPDATED? I redecorated my conservatory, which is part of an open-plan kitchen. During the lockdowns and working from home, I realised I wanted to have a conservatory that I could just chill in. WHY THE CHANGE? It was immaculate when I moved in, but the space was very neutral, with lots of beige and pale green. I wanted to add lots of colour and personality without spending too much of my budget. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? I have done it gradually, adding new upcycles and high street buys to it over the last six months. TOTAL COST 28

Compact seating is a must for a petite space. Patterned cushions add colour and texture and can be changed each season

With this is mind, she drew on her love of colour and pattern to bring the room to life. e budget was tight as she’d just moved in, so she couldn’t replace the floor tiles, especially as they flowed through to kitchen. ankfully, though, the room just needed a good clean before she could start painting. ‘I had some fabulous wall art that inspired my colour scheme, and I really wanted to add pops of black and gold to give it a decadent

of old furniture and a bit of a bargain hunter online. I enjoy upcycling to give pieces a new lease of life. I always wonder what the back story to each piece was before it came to me and how it was originally used,’ says Becky. She bought the sideboard from eBay a few years ago. It was a chipped grey colour but, at £10, was an absolute bargain, and she knew she could transform it into a statement piece. August 2021

wanted to use in her scheme straight away, but took some time to choose the right shades. She spent many hours trawling through magazines, Instagram and decorating shops to find the tones she wanted. ‘For the feature wall, I tested several paints to see how the light in the room changed the colour during the day, which I’d recommend doing as it can really make a difference,’ says Becky. She opted for a Valspar paint in Petal Grove – a warm pink which, when the sun shines, really lights up. ‘I wanted to keep the garden room feeling bright so painted the other walls in white, which makes the feature wall stand out even more.’ She had the floor cleaned and the glass was checked and cleaned professionally. Now all she needed to do was to start adding furniture.

By wallpapering the back of this cabinet Becky has added an extra hit of pattern. ‘It really adds to the tropical feel, and my parrot candleholders look right at home,’ she says

Becky has given these second-hand units a glam new lease of life with a lick of paint, wallpaper offcuts and gold handles

STEP FOUR With the painting and ‘I decided to take the top part off and paint the unit. I sanded the paintwork down to get rid of any chipped paint, used sugar soap to wipe it clean and then used a Johnstone’s mixed shade of green in acrylic eggshell, which matches the colour of my kitchen units that I’d already painted and really makes the room flow,’ explains Becky. e savvy upcycling didn’t stop there, with a gifted drinks cabinet next on the list. Becky sanded the wood, added palm-print wallpaper to the inside of the unit and painted the rest with black interior wood paint. ‘I painted the trims gold for a luxurious touch. I usually use Frog tape when masking areas, but this time I ran out and used masking tape instead. is caused the paint to leak onto the glass, which I had to remove, but I’m over the moon with how well it worked,’ says Becky.

furniture sorted, Becky turned her attention to the rest of the room. She was looking to create a sociable, ‘outside-in’ feel, as the room leads into the garden. ‘I wanted this to be the main social area of the house and a place to spend time in all year round. Adding the sofa and drinks cabinet and making a breakfast bar with a tall console unit creates a real hub for entertaining,’ she says. e MADE.com sofa adds a punch of yellow under the window. Becky has piled it high with tropical cushions from Dunelm and a throw from Next, which complement the fun jungle-themed rug that she found at Argos. Introducing the cane table and magazine rack adds contrasting texture, with plants finishing off the tropical feel. ‘I can’t believe that just a few coats of paint and some upcycling projects have given me a space that I can use, whatever the season. Even with the bright colours I can still come in here and totally relax,’ smiles Becky.

However, with £1,000 already allocated to repairs, Claire realised she’d have to get creative when it came to the décor.

However, to save money, she then took on the painstaking work of sanding and painting all the metal windows and doors herself. ‘is allowed us to pay the builder to lay a new damp course and concrete floor, although we did still end up going over budget, as both the floor and roof cost £1,330,’ recalls Claire. Luckily, the room already had electrics and, having had the wiring certified as safe, the couple decided to insulate and plasterboard the walls themselves. ‘It wasn’t an easy job, especially the ceiling, but did help safeguard my dwindling decorating fund,’ explains Claire.

To make the most of the natural light, Claire painted the entire room off-white, chose doors in a soft blue-green, and put down practical laminate flooring. ‘We also intend to buy some portable heaters later in the year, to keep the room warm in winter,’ says Claire.

STEP THREE When it came to storage,

GARDEN ROOM MAKEOVER

‘We love our multifunctional family space’

After months debating whether to extend her house, Maya Sen decided to invest in a multi-use garden room instead and filled it with bright colours

M

aya Sen desperately wanted to add extra space to their Barnes home. ‘We’ve been talking about extending our home for so long, but it meant sacrificing our patio area where we sit and have barbecues,’ says Maya. A new idea was seeded when she visited a friend who had recently built a garden room. ‘It made us think about whether this would make a better

BEFORE

STEP INSIDE..

WHO LIVES HERE? I’m Maya Sen, 54, a local government advisor, and I live in a 1930s four-bedroom house in Barnes, south-west London, with my husband, James, 55, our two sons, Edward, 14, and Lucas, 12, and our dog, Alfie, a miniature schnauzer. WHAT WAS UPDATED? We added a multipurpose room to an unused space at the bottom of our garden. WHY THE CHANGE? We needed extra living space but didn’t want to lose our patio by building an extension onto the house, so adding a garden room was the ideal solution. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? The build took five weeks in total, then we spent another couple of weeks decorating and finishing the space. TOTAL COST

alternative.’ e room had to fulfil three functions, though: Maya wanted space for her husband to work from home, as well as somewhere the boys can hang out with their friends, and a cosy bedroom for her mother when she comes to visit.

STEP ONE Maya found London Garden Rooms, who went through the different

GARDEN ROOM MAKEOVER options and provided lots of ideas for how to make the most out of the space. Maya explained that they wanted the room to be big enough for a desk area, a sofa bed, and for it to also have a small kitchenette and a shower room. ey drew up plans and drawings and were able to start visualising the space; the whole building process ran smoothly without any hiccups at all – until lockdown was announced. Fortunately, though, most of the work had been completed by then. ‘e blinds for the windows were delayed a few months, but that wasn’t the end of the world. We were so lucky with the builders. ey managed to complete the kitchen area and lay the floor just in time,’ explains Maya.

Stock up on plenty of cushions, throws, pouffes and footstools so you’ll have lots of seating options when friends pop round

STEP TWO e flooring had to be practical and easy to wipe clean, particularly as they have a dog. Maya opted for an engineered wood in oak that fills the space with warm, honey tones. ‘I wanted the room to look cosy and welcoming and knew a wooden floor

The kitchen may be small, but it has everything Maya needs as she’s been savvy with the compact space, even squeezing in a built-in microwave and a hob Maya chose bi-fold doors that she can open out to make the garden feel like part of the space in summer

STEP THREE Next, Maya needed to tick

off a workspace for James. ey brought in an old desk from the spare room in the house to create a workstation on the other side of the space, away from the living area. Maya didn’t want heavy furniture, so the clear glass desk was perfect as it feels less obtrusive in the open-plan space and fits in seamlessly. Plus, it meant she didn’t have to use any of her budget on buying a new desk. ‘It’s such a peaceful August 2021

would make the room feel really homely.’ She went for a smart, compact kitchen, fitted on the right-hand side to ensure it doesn’t intrude on the rest of the space. ‘It has everything you need to cook a proper meal, which is so convenient and means we don’t have to keep running back and forth from the house to fetch food,’ enthuses Maya. It has plenty of storage cupboards, a fridge freezer, and even a two-ring induction hob.

KITCHEN PROBLEM ROOM

P

INSIDER INFO WHO LIVES HERE?

Flo Cooper, 26, and her partner, Phil Coe, 28. Together they run an interior design and build service called FloCoe. They built their contemporary timber-frame, two-bedroom home in 2017 on the site of an old agricultural shed in Phil’s parents’ garden.

WHAT DID YOU WANT FROM YOUR KITCHEN?

We wanted the kitchen to have its own identity, yet still be part of the open-plan living area on the ground floor. It had to be modern and minimal to match the rest of the space, while at the same time be imaginative and stylish.

HOW DID YOU MEET THE CHALLENGES?

We built a walk-in pantry and floor-toceiling wall cupboards to hide the clutter and then painted these units matt pink for visual impact. We added an island, containing the hob, which faces into the room so that we didn’t lose any of the social elements of open-plan living. notruB divaD sotohP noxiD rehtaeH erutaeF

hil Coe was just 23 when he built the house he lives in with his partner, Flo, on the site of an old farm building near York. Using his skills as a joiner, and with the help of family and friends, he spent countless hours doing almost everything himself, from digging foundations, building the timber frame complete with larch-clad walls and roof, to creating the windows, laying floors and installing bi-fold doors. ‘My idea was to cram in as much as possible into the space, but the architect, Ric Blenkharn, showed me that by taking the main living area into the roof space, creating a mezzanine, and altering the size and shape of the windows, I could build something really fresh and contemporary,’ explains Phil. However, the biggest challenge was figuring out how to create a practical kitchen

that worked with the open-plan setting but still retained its own identity. The couple were also restricted by a very small budget. Fortunately, Flo’s eye for interior design and her ability to think outside of the box helped them to develop a kitchen that would be both homely and modern. She used clever, functional design ideas to create plenty of storage and workspace and minimise clutter. ‘We decided to create a separate utility that doubles as a pantry,’ says Flo. ‘That left us with a wall for cupboards and a sink area, as well as an island looking into the living area for cooking and socialising.’ Once they had agreed the design, Phil spent his evenings and weekends making the units and fitting worktops, while Flo focused on sourcing everything for the scheme. ‘Creating our own perfect kitchen

The whole experience became a seamless delight and reinforces the notion that the kitchen can really be the heart of the home when designed for your specific needs.’ ‘Our first time using the kitchen was fantastic,’ adds Flo. ‘For two years Phil spent every spare minute on the house, starting

early in the morning and often working late into the evening. It was a significant turning point when we could actually cook our first meal and know we’d finally got our house to look like home.’ LIGHT UP YOUR LIFE One of their few luxury purchases was a trio of Tala lights over the island. Old preserving jars have so much potential, so don’t throw them away once you’ve finished the last morsel of jam. Turn them into one of these three gorgeous makes, instead… LAVENDER CANDLES

SHOPPING LIST

✔ Three jars of various sizes ✔ Microwavable measuring jug ✔ Glue dot ✔ Large pre-waxed candle wicks ✔ Soya wax flakes, around 500g ✔ Dried lavender on the stalk ✔ Lavender fragrance oil, optional ✔ Twine

1

Wash your jars thoroughly, then fill each one with water to the point where you want your wax to sit. Pour the water into the measuring jug and then make a note of the level. Let your jug and jars dry completely. Use a glue dot to stick your wick into the centre of each jar. Place some soy wax flakes into a measuring jug and melt in a microwave. Add flakes until you have reached the same volume as the water level noted in the previous step. Remove the flowers from most of the stalks, reserving a few for later, and then add a handful per candle to the wax along with a generous dash of fragrance oil, if using. Stir as it cools until the wax thickens enough that the dried flowers are suspended in the liquid. Pour wax into the jar around the wick. Allow the candle to set then decorate with twine and a few sprigs of lavender.

Add two leaf shapes in green and then paint the remaining jar in blue. Allow to dry for 24 hours. Add a second coat of paint to all the elements but this time add some darker and lighter shades of paint for depth. Allow to dry completely before adding brown dots to the centre of the flowers and use dark green to add veins to the leaves and some sprigs of leaves in the gaps around the design. Dry for 24 hours. Cover the entire outside and base of the jar in dishwasher-safe Mod Podge to make it water-resistant. Allow to dry fully. Fill jar with liquid soap and screw on the dispenser lid.

Glue a small section of the map onto card and allow to dry. Use the inner flat part of the lid to draw a circle onto the back of the card. Cut out a 0.8 x 4cm rectangle from the centre of the circle using a craft knife and cutting board and then cut out the circle. Cut off any border from the map and trim so that the map measures 14 x 30cm. Snip 2cm slits into the top and bottom edges at 1cm intervals. Dilute the PVA glue until it reaches a single cream consistency. Paint the jar generously with diluted glue then stick the map in place. Apply more glue to the outside, pressing the map to the jar with a paintbrush. The map should overlap along the curves where you placed the slits. Allow to dry fully. Place the card circle on top of the jar then screw on the outer rim part of the lid. Make a label from card using scissors and a hole punch. Write on your message then tie to the jar with twine, to finish.

Pallet planter

Repurpose a pallet and you have a bargain mini, bespoke vertical garden. After washing it down and painting it, wedge suitably sized plants in their existing containers between the slats. A mix of spare bedding plugs, leafy herbs and young salad plants makes a pretty and productive high-summer combo.

HOW TO MAKE IT We spray-painted our

pallet blue, but if you come by a pallet that’s already blue it should generally be returned*. Check markings on the pallet for treatment information, for example MB means methyl bromide, which is toxic to humans. Keep your plants healthy by cropping and deadheading often until first frosts. Water daily, or use drought-resistant plants.

*Avoid using ready-painted blue pallets. These are owned by the firm CHEP and can’t be legally traded

Eco idea

If you’re trying to make your garden more ecofriendly, go for low-VOC spray paint. Alternatively, try sanding the wood and applying a clear wood stain for a natural look.

Guttering gallery

Underwhelming modern guttering can be transformed with vinyl dye or paint, so if you have some spare lengths, it’s worth buying the extra stops or brackets required to make these nifty wall planters.

HOW TO MAKE IT Cut your guttering to

your desired length and dye or paint to the chosen colour. Treat stops and brackets to match and, once dry, secure in place. Fill with compost and add shallow-rooted plants, such as sedums and trailing ivy, which will grow happily. You could also sow herbs such as parsley, chives or thyme. Keep well watered, especially if under the shelter of an overhanging roof.

1

Cut the striped fabric to measure 150 x 150cm, and then repeat for both the waterproof fabric and the wadding. Lay the waterproof fabric right side (RS) up on a flat surface. Place the striped fabric RS down on top, then place the wadding on top of that. Pin or clip the three layers together all the way around. Sew all the way around the edge with a 2cm seam allowance, but leave a 50cm gap unstitched on one side for turning the blanket RS out in the next step. Pull the picnic blanket through the 50cm gap so the right sides are facing out. Use a knitting needle, or your fingers, to push the corners out into crisp points and press with an iron. Turn the unsewn edges of the turning gap in towards the wrong side (WS) by 2cm, pin together, then slip stitch closed by hand. Sew a line of topstitching on your sewing machine all the way around the blanket, 2cm in from the edge, to neaten. Roll up your picnic blanket and hold it in place with a length of string. Measure the circumference of the rolled-up blanket with a tape measure. Ours measured 70cm. Add 6cm to this measurement for the straps. Cut two 76cm strips of webbing for the straps and one 39cm strip of webbing for the handle.

Form each 76cm length of webbing into a loop with a 6cm overlap. Place them approximately 27cm apart on your work surface with the overlaps facing up. Turn each end of the webbing for the handle under by 6cm and place it on top of the loops, directly over the point where the loop ends overlap. Pin into place.

Sew a line of stitching in a square shape, 5mm in from the edges of the webbing, to join the loops and handle together. Stitch two straight lines in a cross formation across each square for added strength. Slide the carrying loops over each end of the rolled-up picnic blanket, to finish.

As our work and home lives continue to blend, a room divider is an affordable way to zone your space – follow this guide to find out how to make your own!

W

ith working from home now the new norm, many of us have set up office in communal spaces, such as the dining room. A designated office room is very much a luxury, so make the most of the space you do have with a Scandi-style room divider. It’ll allow you to easily separate work from home life, while also providing handy storage space. Even if you don’t work from home, it’s a simple way to divide up larger open-plan rooms without obstructing light or making the space feel small. While room dividers are quite readily available now, they can be rather pricey so making your own is the way to go. You can be as creative as you like – try decorating with some wood paint in pretty pastel hues!

1

Mark out the peg holes on each sheet using a measuring tape, pencil and a straight edge. From the top, mark four holes 75mm apart horizontally. Using the same spacing, mark 14 holes vertically down from the top of the sheet.

3

7

68

2

Lay one sheet on the workbench and clamp it down. If using a flat surface, position on a scrap piece of board. Using the 3mm drill bit, drill each hole all the way through to create the 4 x 14 grid pattern. Repeat steps 1 and 2 on the other two sheets. Fit your drill with a 16mm drill bit. In each pilot hole location, drill each hole half the way through. Once complete, flip the board over and repeat on the other side. This prevents the grain from splitting and gives a clean finish to the peg hole. Repeat for all three sheets. Using the tape and pencil, mark 100mm lengths on the dowel and cut into pegs using a saw. Cut as many as you like – two will be needed for each shelf and any extra pegs can be used for hanging bags or plants from. Lightly sand all the surfaces. If curved corners are preferred, sand these for a little longer. Before the next step, it’s important to brush off any excess sawdust so it’s dust-free. Brush a layer of clear varnish across all the drilled sheets of pegboard, shelves and

dowel pegs. Again, use the bench and clamps for stability. Leave to completely dry. To prepare the pegboard sheets for painting, apply masking tape to the top and bottom of the sheet, leaving the edges exposed. Do the same with the shelves. Gently apply wood paint to all edges and leave to dry. You can also paint the ends of the pegs if you wish. To attach the hinges, lay two of the pegboard sheets on their side, back-toback. Measure 100mm from both ends and lay one of the hinges central, opened flat with the hinge facing upwards. Screw in the small screws (these should be supplied with the hinge) with an electric screwdriver. Repeat this process for the opposite hinge. Then, flip the sheets so the installed hinges are face-down. Lay the third sheet on its side, back-to-back with the two already joined. Again, measure 100mm from both ends and attach the hinges to the centre of the sheets. Stand the completed pegboard up, push the pegs in and place the shelves on top of the pegs at your chosen heights.

Q A

My garage doors are in need of a refresh. What type of paint should I use and how should I prep the doors before? Anita Stanley, Bedford Will Thompson, Head of Marketing at Valspar, says…… Painting your garage door is a great way to neaten up the outside of your home and experiment with bold colours, like Valspar’s Aqua Mosaic (a mid teal) and English Primrose (a soft ochre). Before starting, make sure you pick a warm, dry day for the task – you don’t want your hard work to go to waste! To ensure the surface is smooth, use a flat scraper to remove any flaking or bubbling paint. Then, go over the door with 180 grit sandpaper. My kitchen floor is in need of a refresh. Can vinyl be laid over existing flooring, and what prep is needed? Susan Tang, Bath Matthew Brook, National Sales Manager at Moduleo, says… The best option for laying new vinyl over existing flooring is luxury vinyl tiles or planks with integrated underlay. They offer huge benefits for those looking to renovate their kitchen or other rooms around the home. For example, our engineered vinyl flooring collection, Moduleo LayRed, is perfect for uneven floors and can be used straight over existing flooring, including tiles or underfloor heating. The integrated underlay makes it simple for anyone to lay the floor without too much fuss. Each Moduleo LayRed design comes with an enhanced protective layer, so it’s resistant to scratches and stains. The engineered vinyl flooring can bridge gaps and slight unevenness in the subfloor. Minimal prep is required as the range uses clickable technology, removing the need for adhesive and instead using a Moduleo LayRed in Mountain practical tooth-groove connection. Moira Carlisle, Leeds Whether you need a clever home office, a fancy boot room cupboard or even a cosy Eleanor Paynter, Designer at Hammonds, says… Using the wasted area underneath your staircase for extra storage or a small office is a quick and smart way to maximise space in your house. Staircases are often the most neglected part of your home, yet they have heaps of potential for creating even more space. It’s time to swap those dusty old shoes for something more magical. Make working from home more peaceful by creating a functional under-stairs nook that’s conveniently tucked away. You can keep your desk clutter-free with Hammonds’ handy fitted shelves and storage that optimise space. Alternatively, you could make a cosy reading nook with fitted furniture and soft furnishings. Leigh Barnes, Retail Sales Manager at Jacksons Fencing, says… Solid fencing is naturally the best for privacy, but if you’re worried about it feeling imposing, we would recommend combining any solid fence panel with a trellis or fence topper. This will allow you to strike the perfect balance between privacy and creating a welcoming space with natural light. Our Canterbury Combi fence panels are a hybrid of both Venetian and tongue and groove, giving the best ready-made solution to this common concern. Alternatively, you could opt for a hit and miss style fence. With pales on both sides of the fence in an alternating pattern, it creates a semi-solid design that can only be seen through when looking at specific angles, while still letting light and air through. Opting for timber will also help to create a less imposing boundary as its natural appearance will blend into the surroundings and complement planting. If you’re painting your fence, opt for lighter colours that allow light to reflect and create a brighter space.

COLOURFUL COTTAGE

‘My kids have picked up my love for DIY!’

A

Abby Bray and her fiancé, Chris, have filled their Leicester period cottage with vintage finds and heritage shades, plus plenty of fun details for their children

fter her daughter was born, Abby and her fiancé, Chris, started househunting as they needed more space for their growing family, and knew exactly where they wanted to live. ‘We have always lived in the Leicestershire area and know lots of the little villages inside out,’ explains Abby. ‘We had outgrown our old home and needed somewhere bigger with living space. So, in July 2019 we moved into this period cottage.’ It dates back to the 1820s, and the back of the property was once used as horse stables before being converted into rooms for the cottage. ‘e gardens used to be an apple orchard many years ago and we still have some fruit trees in the garden,’ she says. By making the move, the family gained a playroom, a larger kitchen, a separate living room and dining room, as well as a generous garden. ‘is house has a lovely history with lots of character, and we fell in love with the higgledy-piggledy layout,’ says Abby. Although they were charmed by its quirky feel, the cottage’s décor was dreary and lacking in imagination. After years of being rented out, the cottage had been painted After lots of hard work, the once-drab interior of Abby and Chris’ cottage now matches the charm of its exterior

Abby wasn’t a fan of the existing tiles, but once she painted the units in Railings by Farrow & Ball, she fell in love with the chequerboard effect

REAL HOME To help zone this multi-use space, Abby made a play area for Evie and Ollie with a spotty feature wall, colourful prints of children’s films and mustard tassel bunting

top-to-bottom in magnolia, with lots of dark wooden features, which left the house feeling gloomy. e garden was in dire need of a makeover, too. In the first few months, Abby concentrated her energy on decorating her children’s rooms. ‘I wanted them to feel settled in their new home, so I gave both of their rooms makeovers,’ she says. Large, fitted wardrobes, a built-in desk and shelving was ripped out to make the rooms feel spacious, and the walls were painted white. Abby added pattern and colour, wallpapering Olly’s room and painting pink scalloped walls in Evie’s bedroom. Although Evie is only two years old, she has strong opinions on the look of her room. ‘She helped me choose the colours and had a say on some of the accessories. She knows what she likes!’ explains Abby. ‘e kids love getting involved, watching me put up shelves and passing me a paintbrush. I think they’ve inherited my love of decorating, which is great as Chris isn’t a fan of DIY!’ Over time, Abby turned her attention to the rest of her house, choosing a palette of heritage shades for the main living spaces. ‘I’m a huge fan of Farrow & Ball paints,’ she says. ‘I find the colours work in harmony 78

Although it’s not ideal to ping-pong between rooms, it does mean I can add to each space over time with wallpaper, a dado rail or paint as I decide on the overall look of the house.’ With the help of her mum, Abby also wallpapered the living room and put up decals in the playroom. She wanted the spaces to reflect how the family use them, both in terms of practicality and style. ‘During the daytime we hang out in the kitchen and playroom, as the French doors lead out onto the garden,’ she says. ‘en, at night, once the kids have gone to bed, Chris and I snuggle up in the living room, which has been decorated with a more grown-up feel.’ One of the biggest projects that Abby undertook this past year was painting the kitchen cabinets by hand. Previously, they had a warm, wooden finish that clashed with the

black-and-white tiles. Using Farrow & Ball’s Railings, she painted the cabinets herself. ‘At first, I didn’t like the tiling, but once I upcycled the cabinets, I fell in love with the chequerboard effect. It now looks like a designer kitchen, but the transformation cost next to nothing,’ says Abby. Once the interior was brightened, they turned their attention to the overgrown garden. A landscape gardener replaced the wonky patio slabs and cut back the overgrown bushes and weeds. ‘Overall, we spent about £6,000 renovating our outdoor space, but it was worth it because we live out there in the summer. It feels so much bigger now as well,’ explains Abby. Being savvy with their remaining budget, Chris and Abby then built the shed and playhouse themselves. ‘We were all hands on deck to get this house done and dusted!’ she says. After two years of solid decorating, Abby and Chris are now planning on moving to a nearby village that Chris grew up in. ‘We love this house dearly but now is the best time to move for the children’s A Farrow & Ball Dix Blue feature schooling. SCANDI NEW-BUILD

‘I wanted our first home to be a serene space’

W

Yooni Cho has recreated the atmosphere of her beloved Stockholm in Kent with earthy tones, natural materials and a lot of creativity

hen Yooni Cho and her then fiancé, Khai, found their first family home, a new-build in Kent, they were looking for a retreat away from the noise of London. ‘I’m originally from Sweden,’ says Yooni, ‘and, although I’ve spent most of my life in Stockholm, another vibrant city, I’m used to a much calmer and more nature-based way of life than I found

in London. I really missed that about home when I moved here.’ So, when the couple were visiting wedding venues just outside of the capital, they threw house-hunting into the mix, too. Even though they ended up getting married in a French château (whose vintage, country feel heavily influenced Yooni’s colour palette in their new home as well), they fell in love with the Ebbsfleet Garden City area of

Kent. ‘We actually booked the wedding venue on the same day we viewed David Wilson’s Layton show home,’ says Yooni. ‘e sales rep told us they had another option, which had the same open layout with an added sunroom. We were sold and just thought, let’s go for it!’ Yooni was after a blank canvas that wouldn’t need costly structural work before they could move in, ‘plus it’s only a 12-minute

train journey to St Pancras, and it’s very family-orientated here,’ she says. Now the couple have a one-year-old boy, Leo, it fits their lifestyle perfectly. at was two years ago, and, perhaps unsurprisingly with a small child in the picture, Yooni and Khai are only just completing the majority of the decorating, which they’ve done themselves. ‘Our son’s nursery was our first ever DIY project together! I must admit it was quite frightening at first as neither of us are typical DIYers,’ she says. ‘We started by choosing a gender-neutral colour as we didn’t know whether it was a boy or a girl at the time. I always had in mind that if it was a boy, I would style the room with cooler shades like the mint green canopy, teal garlands and navy-coloured artworks.’ Yooni recommends taking your time with your home styling. ‘You’ve got to get to know how you’re going to live in a space before you do too much to it. It made sense to get all our big pieces of furniture in first and work around them.’ Yooni made mood boards based around key items for each room and went from there, referencing her favourite homes on Instagram for inspiration, and sharing her own ideas @houseofyooni. ‘I love snooping around other people’s homes,’ she laughs.

‘ere are so many talented and creative homeowners out there and I especially love looking at Scandinavian properties.’ It’s no surprise that Yooni is all about Scandi style, with a penchant for earthy, natural tones and simple yet practical design solutions. In most of the rooms, she has added natural features such as dried flowers and wooden elements to create ‘a serene atmosphere, like the feeling you get when you walk down a country road during long summer nights,’ she says. Among the Swedish elements, such as the crystal decanters and candle holders she was given by her mum and grandma, much of Yooni’s own artwork is on the walls as well. ‘I’ve always been into the arts, and in Sweden all of our studies at school encourage us to be very creative – maybe that’s why good design is so prominent in Nordic countries,’ says Yooni, who started painting when she was pregnant and now takes commissions, mostly through her large Instagram following. Yooni also loves flower arranging and her beautiful pampas flower sculptures make striking additions to prominent walls. ‘Usually, you see more sculptural pieces like this at weddings and big events,’ says Yooni,

‘but I knew I really wanted that kind of look in our home. ey create soft yet eye-catching ornaments and I love how unusual it is to just have one flower cloud over a sideboard like this.’ e wreath in the kitchen is one of Yooni’s designs too, based on a recycled rose garland bought for the couple’s wedding décor. ‘I like the dainty vibe without using feminine tones in the house – I don’t want it to be too girly-looking,’ she explains. Wall panelling has also added more character. Yooni put up square formation panels on the nursery and bedroom walls and added a whole section of wooden battens in the office, painted with lime wash for added texture and warmth. ‘It made the panelling look more vintage, which added even more personality to the feature walls,’ says Yooni. ‘e same goes for the wallpapers – I chose the weathered brush stroke look as I wanted a touch of vintage as well as a modern feel to this house.’ Yooni admits that there’s one last room to decorate, for now the proverbial dumping ground all young families need. However, the work she’s done so far all comes together to create a smart, cohesive sanctuary – quite a feat with a baby in residence!

Inspired by the seaside and nature, art teacher Jess Jones has transformed a dated 1950s bungalow into a family living space filled with quirky murals and creative details

J

ess and Sam Jones bought their 1950s bungalow in the small Oxfordshire village of Cassington eight years ago, as they liked the plot and saw the potential for it to be a wonderful family home – once they worked their creative magic on its lessthan-perfect interior. ‘We loved the area, which was near good schools, and with two toddlers and another on the way this was really important to us,’ Jess says. ‘e house was very dated when we bought it, though, as nothing had been changed since it was built by the previous owners in the 1950s. It came complete with a free-standing retro kitchen, beige wood chip and flocked wallpaper, Artex ceilings and patterned carpets – it was really quite grim!’ she adds. Originally a two-bedroom property, they started to make plans to renovate soon after moving in. ‘We couldn’t wait to strip out the old kitchen, bathroom, carpets and wallpaper, but we also wanted to create an open-plan living, cooking and dining space. We initially thought we would just knock through the original bedroom, kitchen and bathroom walls at the back and then extend out to create bedrooms and a bathroom, but a structural engineer friend said that there was so much

It was once this building work was completed that Jess began on her colour journey in their home. ‘We chose blue geometric tiles for the dining room, and this started the ball rolling,’ she says. I’ve always loved the Impressionists, such as Monet.’ When her children were little, she didn’t have time for creating art at home. ‘But now I have a bit more ‘me’ time and I can get out my paints and brushes, often with the kids joining in,’ she says. ‘My inspiration comes from our holidays in Cornwall and Wales. I love blues, greens, yellows and pops of colour. Being land-locked in Oxfordshire, we wanted a coastal feel in our home that we could enjoy all year round – I think we’ve achieved that.’ Next on the couple’s to-do list are the family bathroom and their son’s bedroom. ‘At the moment they are still fairly basic from the original renovation, but I’ve got lots of colourful ideas for them that will come into fruition soon, hopefully!’ Jess says.

‘My inspiration comes from our holidays in Cornwall and Wales. I love blues, greens, yellows and pops of colour.’

For a fruity summer salad, halve 2 nectarines and remove the stones. Whisk together 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar and 2 tbsp olive oil in a bowl. Add the nectarines and leave to marinate for 30 minutes. Grill for 2-3 minutes on each side, reserving the dressing. Put 60g rocket in a large bowl and drizzle over the dressing. Toast 2 tbsp pine nuts in a dry pan. Scatter over the salad. Cut the nectarines into thin slices and add to the salad. Crumble over 50g goat’s cheese and serve. To make a light dessert, preheat the oven to 190°C. Put 4 halved and pitted nectarines in a bowl with 125g soft brown sugar, 4 tbsp maple syrup and ½ tsp cinnamon. Mix well then place in an ovenproof dish, drizzling over any leftover syrup. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes, then serve straight away with vanilla ice cream. Bake a show-stopping tart by first preheating the oven to 200°C. On a floured surface, roll out 1 sheet of puff pastry to a 9 x 12-inch rectangle. Slice 3 nectarines and lay them on top of the puff pastry, leaving a ½ inch border around the edge. Brush with 2 tbsp melted butter and sprinkle over 2 tbsp sugar and ¼ tsp cinnamon. Bake for 25 minutes until golden.

Bring elements of self-sufficiency into your home and garden to help conserve resources while saving money at the same time

I

n an age where we know how important it is to live more sustainably, taking care to choose and buy products for the home that help to conserve energy and water, there are always further steps that can be taken. For most of us it’s not practical to go the whole way with a smallholding, but there are different elements that can be introduced in order to help you become more self-reliant. If you can produce some of your own food, electricity and even water, you will not only be helping the planet by conserving its valuable resources but you can also save money, too.

INSTALL SOLAR PANELS

Generate your own electricity by installing solar panels on the roof. With prices starting at around £4,800, the most popular are panel systems but you can also find solar tiles, which cost twice as much. You shouldn’t need planning permission to install either, but check with your local council before you go ahead, just in case. A roof area of 10-20 sq m can provide up to 45 per cent of a property’s electricity needs. It should be south-facing, unshaded and at a pitch angle of 30º or 40º according to the Energy Saving Trust. Solar panels generate power even on cloudy days, and you’ll need to use their energy during the day, so get things like your washing done during this time. In the evening, you’ll be back to using energy from your supplier so you’ll still need to pay bills, but they should be a lot lower.

HOME IMPROVEMENT Turn kitchen waste including meat, fish and dairy products into nutrient-rich fertiliser or compost with Hozelock’s Bokashi composter, £54.99 Reduce house bills with solar energy that creates your own electricity – the more energy you produce from the solar panels the less you’ll need from your supplier, increasing self-sufficiency

Even the smallest of gardens can be used for growing your own vegetables and salad leaves

GROW YOUR OWN VEGGIES

MAKE YOUR OWN COMPOST

Creating your own compost gets rid of kitchen scraps and provides you with natural, organic fertiliser that can be used on your vegetable patch in about two to three weeks. By popping things like banana peel, coffee grounds, plastic-free teabags, apple cores, potato peelings and eggshells into a composter on the work surface or under the sink, you can reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill. It’s easy to make your own compost bin using a basic plastic container but you can buy ready-made airtight designs in stainless steel or bamboo too, which will look more attractive if it’s going to be on show. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you can also think bigger and start a compost heap outdoors, incorporating your garden waste and lawn cuttings, too.

RAISE ANIMALS

Chickens, bees or goats will supply you with eggs, honey, milk and cheese and you might not need as much space as you think. Hens will need a coop to sleep safely at night and lay their eggs. They’ll also need a fenced-off area or a run in a spot that drains well. For bees you’ll need a beehive, which you can install in a residential area – though the more space the better so they have access to a range of flowers. Goats are sociable, so you’ll need at least two, and they will need a quarter of an acre of fenced-off land. You’ll also want somewhere dry and ventilated for them to shelter in. Before you bring your livestock home, check there are no restrictions on your deeds or lease, ask the council if it’s ok and let close neighbours know. August 2021

By creating your own veg patch you can harvest all sorts of goodness. You don’t need a lot of space or skill; things like herbs and tomato plants can even be grown in pots on the window sill. Use this fresh produce alongside shop-bought food, and turn it into pickles and chutneys to make your produce last longer. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to start. Choose a sunny spot, give it a good digging over to break up the soil and get rid of weeds and stones. Add compost or soil conditioner then plant away. Space out evenly and add poles for climbers like beans. Some seedlings should be started off indoors, so check before planting. You can section off the patch with reclaimed railway sleepers or planks of timber, or create a raised bed for root vegetables.

‘Making your own natural solutions is a great way to garden in an environmentally friendly way. It will not only help your garden to flourish allyear-round but making your own fertiliser or compost can also reduce your household food waste. The Bokashi Composter from Hozelock allows you to turn all kitchen waste into a nutrient-rich fertiliser or a base for first-grade compost with just one piece of equipment.’

CREATE A COLD STORE

Ideal when you are growing your own fruit and vegetables, a cold store or root cellar is basically a pantry or larder, usually walk-in, that keeps food cool and easily accessible. If you have a basement then it’s a great way to enhance your self-sufficiency but you can also create a cold store in a porch, utility room or cupboard under the stairs. Anywhere cool and dry will keep most vegetables for a couple of months, if it has good air circulation and ventilation. In the kitchen, turn a walk-in cupboard into a cold store by adding shelving for dried ingredients in glass jars and base units with pull-out wooden slatted or wicker baskets that allow fresh produce to breathe. Install a marble worktop for a cool surface and you have natural refrigeration with plenty of storage. 108

COLLECT RAINWATER

Try to reuse and recycle it wherever possible. Gardeners should aim to use their mains water as little as possible when watering vegetable patches, plants, flowers and even the lawn in really dry seasons. Using stored rainwater or grey water lowers your carbon emissions, cuts down on your water bills and is better for your plants as it has a lower pH. Use water butts to collect water from downpipes on the roof, the garage, shed or greenhouse. To store more water, swap the butt for a large volume rainwater tank. There are space-saving vertical designs, horizontal models and various sizes to store everything from 150 to 30,000 litres! These one-piece tanks are easy to install and you can re-purpose the water for the garden as well as cleaning tasks.

Living a more sustainable life has made us healthier and haier Liz Zorab lives an almost self-sufficient life in Monmouthshire Liz says she now enjoys a much more varied diet and feels healthier and happier as a result

Becoming a full-time gardener and homesteader meant a huge lifestyle change for Liz Zorab when she gave up her job to move to rural Wales. Prompted by a health crisis, Liz and her husband, who everyone calls Mr. J, were forced to re-evaluate the way they live. ‘I needed to do something to work around how well I felt,’ explains Liz. ‘I thought, if I could grow and raise as much of our food as possible, I could contribute to the family income and work at my own pace.’ The house the couple purchased in 2015 needed little or no work, whereas Liz started her vegetable garden by planting basic salad ingredients in raised beds, leaving pathways between them wide enough to take a wheelchair should she ever need one

the 0.8 acre plot was another story. ‘The soil was lifeless, so the first thing I did was build a compost heap,’ explains Liz, who has always loved gardening so had a head start when it came to cultivating her now established fruit and vegetable patch. Raised beds came next and Liz started growing ‘a few things I knew, in one bed at a time. I was feeling my way so I just grew basic salad stuff and a few potatoes at first, then moved on to carrots and cabbages and lots more. In the first year, I created 10 beds, using as much homemade compost as possible and now we are virtually self-sufficient, with around 85 per cent of our food and drink coming from our own garden.’ Sustainable living also extends to other areas, such as energy. ‘Our solar panels were already in place, so we have no power bills as all our costs are covered by the feed-in tariff,’ adds Liz. Recycling is important for the couple,

too. ‘We use locally sourced materials wherever possible such as pallets to create fencing and wood chips from a local tree surgeon for pathways and composting. And, of course, a handy bucket in the kitchen ensures all fruit and vegetable scraps are returned to the compost heap.’ Liz and Mr. J also keep bees and while they originally raised chickens, now rear ducks for both eggs and meat. They also help control the snail and slug population when allowed to roam among the vegetable beds, eliminating the need for slug pellets. ‘It’s certainly a lot of work,’ reveals Liz, ‘but I’m convinced that the fresh air and exercise and the unadulterated food we eat have all played a part in improving our health and wellbeing.’ Liz recounts her experience in her book, Grounded – A Gardener’s Journey to Abundance and Self-Sufficiency, available from bytherfarm.com/books.

Liz’s smallholding provides most of the food she and her husband need, providing them with a diet of healthy home-grown produce for tasty home-cooked meals

8 OF THE BEST:

camping essentials

Get ready for a trip in the great outdoors with these must-have items for all eventualities

W

ith staycations being the best way to catch a break this summer, camping is on the cards for seasoned campers and newbies alike. But before you begin packing up everything bar the kitchen sink, it’s worth assessing what you really need for a few days sleeping under the stars. Top of the list should be a tent, but what type comes down to who will be spending time in it. ‘We often get feedback from customers that wish they’d bought bigger,’ says Paul Trepte, Managing Director of independent outdoor retailer Trekitt. ‘I’d recommend getting a tent with a porch as a good halfway house – you get a larger footprint for less weight,’ he adds. Somewhere comfortable to rest your head should be a high priority too, as you don’t want a poor night’s sleep hindering your trip. ‘Sleeping bags have comfort and season ratings, and while this may seem like jargon it’s actually really important information,’ explains David Scotland, owner of Outdoor World Direct. ‘A one-season sleeping bag will only be suitable for warm summer nights, whereas a three-four

season sleeping bag is thicker and better suited to year-round camping but perhaps too thick for hot summer nights. Each sleeping bag has a comfort rating or suggested usage, which will include two temperatures such as -2°C to 18°C. at means checking that the forecasted temperatures of your trip don’t fall outside of that temperature range.’ Other essential buys are comfortable chairs, something to cook on – such as a gas stove or a compact barbecue – as well as some cooking utensils and picnicware. Portable lighting will also come in handy when the sun goes down. Most other items, however, are considered more of a luxury. e best course of action is to write a checklist before you go so you don’t forget anything or end up over-packing in a lastminute panic. ‘Even experienced campers forget the less obvious items,’ says David. ‘If you do forget something like a mallet, try not to sweat it and don’t be afraid to ask fellow campers. We’re typically a friendly bunch and often more than happy to help out others and impart our wisdom on those with less experience.’

Tents come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so make sure you buy something that suits your specific or future needs

provides more space inside, though the poles are less flexible the larger the tent.

Now’s the ideal time to make your garden holiday-proof if you are planning on taking a break

ith warmer weather, longer sunny evenings and children off school, August is the month many of us choose to recharge the batteries, either at home or away, if we can. It’s also the month for lazy picnics in the garden with friends and family and if you have tended any homegrown produce, it’s the season to pick, eat and share gluts of the harvest.

By this stage of the year, you may have invested a great deal of time and effort into making your garden look beautiful, so it would be a shame to let it all perish from lack of watering in your absence. ere are many automatic watering systems on the market but one of the easiest to use is Gardena’s AquaBloom as it’s solar-powered and doesn’t require a tap, so no need for any outdoor

Gold, silver and bronze plants

Award your garden with plants that lend their glittering radiance to beds, borders and containers, as these winning tones provide the perfect backdrop for colourful flowering plants.

1.

Gold: Humulus lupulus ‘Aureus’ Golden Hops

Grow this vigorous climber over an arch or pergola where you will be able to appreciate its strings of aromatic hops in late summer, which can also be used in dried flower arrangements. Cut the plant back hard in spring.

2.Gold: Philadelphus coronarius ‘Aureus’

The foliage of this stunning, hardy, deciduous shrub is at its most golden in early spring. It is often referred to as mock orange since it produces an abundance of citrus-scented clusters of white blooms in early summer.

4.

Silver: Eryngium giganteum ‘Silver Ghost’

Flowering during July and August, this shimmering biennial self-seeds freely in well-drained soil in full sunlight. An architectural plant that carries silver, spiky flowers that are beloved by flower arrangers for their longevity in displays. Propagate by taking root cuttings in winter.

5.Bronze: Phormium

Pair a bronze-coloured Phormium with a matching coloured pot to enhance its metallic charm. Phormiums make great bed fellows with containers and need very little maintenance other than watering, feeding and removing any dead leaves in spring.

6.Bronze: Heuchera ‘Marmalade’

An ideal front of the border plant for all-year interest. While it does produce tall wands of delicate flowers, it is more often grown for its bronze, ruffled foliage.

Boutique SPEAK

SHOP OF THE MONTH

We get to know Louise Chidgey, founder of food and interiors shop Brassica Mercantile Describe a typical day

What led you to set up shop?

What is your favourite design style?

We love tablescaping! I love aerned tablecloths, which I pair with napkins and bright candles

First up is the school run, driving through the beautiful countryside and gathering my thoughts for the day. Once I get to work, it’s non-stop. My husband makes all the Brassica Made food for the shop, and most of my day is spent chatting to customers, ordering stock and working with my assistant, Alice. I work in the restaurant some evenings, but with a nine-year-old at home, I limit my nightshifts! While I don’t have a favourite, I am drawn to colour and pattern, but very discerning when it comes to mixing prints. I love colour blocking! Our shop was repainted recently and I chose an edited palette for the look.

Ever since I left university, I knew I would have a shop. I worked for Sir Terence Conran at The Conran Shop for years. I wanted to combine my love of food and design and was very lucky to meet my husband who owned the Canteen restaurant chain in London.

What can we find in the shop?

A mix of homewares, books, food and wine – anything for an entertaining space! We sell the splatterware we use in the restaurant, too. Where do you find inspiration? Mainly from my travel – my most recent inspiration trips were to France, Spain, Italy and Morocco, but I’m also inspired by exhibitions, films, books and Instagram.

Tell us your top table styling tips...

We love tablescaping! I love patterned tablecloths, especially our range from Nathalie Lété. Pair them with plain-coloured napkins and bright candles; I’m a big fan of colour.

What’s next for Brassica Mercantile?

My husband and I are keen to move into the accommodation sector so we’re constantly on the lookout for the perfect property. 5, The Square, Beaminster, Dorset DT8 3AX; brassicamercantile.co.uk
