Deceuninck - Our House Winter 2018

Welcome Winter 2018

A Note from Filip Geeraert

A

s an industry, we stand at a time poised for change.

At a time in our society when attitudes are shifting and norms are being thrust to the side, the fenestration, housing and construction industries reflect this evolution and, in many ways, have taken an active role. Deceuninck North America has never been shy when it comes to adapting to new technologies, new processes, new trends.

After all, innovation is in our DNA.

The new year always represents an opportunity for a fresh start, but I see it as more than that for us. This is our chance to build off what we’ve contributed to the industry, what has already taken many years to established. But it’s also our chance to approach our growth with a refreshed attitude – one poised to spearhead the meaningful change I know we are capable of spurring within our industry. Sincerely,

But in 2018, I’m confident in saying that Deceuninck is going to do more than adapt. We’re leading the charge. In this edition of Our House – the first of the year – we take a look at some of those changes and explore how Deceuninck plays a part. We reflect on ways we’ve grown in 2017, and take a look at the innovations we introduced for the first time. We even examine some of the industry trends we noticed at the National Association of Home Builders International Builders’ Show to make a prediction for what we expect to see emerge in the next year.

Filip Geeraert President and CEO

LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARD Deceuninck Records Strong Growth in 2017

D

eceuninck North America’s 2017 was one of strong business growth, continued investment in operations, and the roll out of innovative products.

The company experienced strong sales growth in 2017 with a double-digit increase of 11 percent and sales of almost $150 million in 2017. A significant contributor to that was a 17 percent growth in window and door system sales. To accommodate its growth, Deceuninck is continuing to invest in capital and equipment improvements as well as building its workforce. At its Monroe, Ohio facility Deceuninck upgraded multiple extrusion lines, increased extrusion capacity and added 250,000 square feet of warehouse space. In 2017, Deceuninck’s new product offerings demonstrated its commitment to innovation, design and sustainability.

• The company launched the Revolution XL™ Tilt &

Turn window and door system. The system achieves the best of both worlds: a European-style product designed for high-performance U.S. applications. Revolution XL delivers a full suite of products – windows, a lift/slide door and a terrace door – suitable for the remodeling, replacement or new construction markets. With flexible design and a range of colors and finishes available, it is possible to achieve a similar appearance as aluminium with superior thermal performance.

2

XTREME FIBERGLASS

• Deceuninck North America expanded its use

of Rovex® Xtreme Fiberglass (XF), an advanced material technology that sets a new standard for extreme performance applications, to create next-generation commercial pressure plate applications. Rovex XF has a metal-like stiffness and strength, is highly resistant to fatigue failure and has extremely low thermal conductivity. Custom designs are available to meet the needs of unique curtain wall systems.

• The same technology that made Innergy®

reinforcements so successful is now available for window mullions. Designed to fit a range of standard Deceuninck window systems, the mullions can be used in multiple configurations, including twins and transoms. The technology also provides increased condensation resistance due to the improved thermal performance of Rovex XF.

NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK Deceuninck Forecasts 2018 Trends

I

n early January, representatives from Deceuninck attended the National Association of Home Builders International Builders’ Show in Orlando. The event gives industry leaders an early glimpse at the housing trends to come in the following months, with the industry’s top window and door manufacturers and fenestration suppliers in attendance. Based on buzz and products exhibited at the show, here are a few trends we predict will be bigger than ever in 2018.

BIGGER WINDOWS AND PATIO DOORS In 2018, it’s all about light. Homeowners are seeking more ways to create expansive views and let natural light into their homes, and they’re doing so through large windows and doors that transition seamlessly from the outdoors to inside their homes.

STYLE OPTIONS

More homeowners are thinking like design professionals these days, and that means there’s more demand for style options. From fancy finishes to luxurious colors, fabricators are investing in more styles and hues than ever.

DECORATIVE GLASS Whether for privacy purposes or for a touch of texture in their interior design, homeowners are gravitating toward glass that goes beyond the traditional. Decorative glass gives homeowners an edge that sets their home apart as they lean into new styles.

Job Growth ➜ Company Growth Deceuninck North America Receives Tax Credit

T

he Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved a plan to provide approximately $400,000 in tax credits over seven years to Deceuninck North America for a job creation program at the company’s Monroe, Ohio headquarters. As part of the program, Deceuninck North America will continue its ongoing investments in capital and equipment improvements at the Monroe facility. In 2017, the company added 250,000 squarefeet of warehouse space to its existing 350,000 square-feet in Monroe. These improvements will enable Deceuninck North America to continue to support customers as they grow. The Regional Economic Development Initiative (REDI) Cincinnati was instrumental in coordinating the assistance.

As Deceuninck North America bolsters our workforce and manufacturing capabilities, we are grateful to the state of Ohio and REDI Cincinnati for their support,

said Filip Geeraert, president and CEO, Deceuninck North America. “Our employees are the backbone of our success and the source of the company’s restless spirit of innovation.”

An Open & Shut Case for Performance

Form. Function. And Full of Features.

Revolution XL™ is a high-performance window and door system that achieves the best of both worlds: a European-style product with the ability to retrofit for U.S. applications.

Tilt-in, in-swing windows. The top of the sash tilts in for secure, indirect ventilation, and swings in for added access.

Revolution XL is an architect’s dream. Form and function are integrally balanced to create a triumph of high-tech engineering. Using computer modeling to optimize structural integrity, thermal performance, and functional durability.

Ideally suited for commercial applications, Revolution XL delivers a full suite of products with flexible design and a range of colors and finishes available, achieving a similar appearance as aluminum with superior thermal performance. This system provides acoustic excellence for installations where optimum acoustic performance is required, and is designed for impact rated coastal applications. The bronze exterior color was selected with a white interior over the one-color aluminum extrusion. This was a better blending of the building’s existing aesthetics, and the Revolution window was more cost-competitive than similar aluminum options.

Reaching a New Generation of Manufacturing Workers

T

he Manufacturing Institute forecasts that by 2025 nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will likely need to be filled, and the skills gap is expected to result in 2 million of those jobs going unfilled. As a manufacturing company, Deceuninck North America is aware of the need to ensure that as we move forward we have employees who will enable the company to be competitive, innovative and support our continued growth – and that includes recruiting and cultivating the next generation workforce. Deceuninck is involved in a range of activities that will help support these efforts. For a number of years, Deceuninck has worked in partnership with Cincinnati State College, providing a combination of online study with hands-on experience to teach skills that can directly translate to Deceuninck’s specialized work.

At the high school level, Deceuninck recently collaborated with the Chamber of Commerce serving Middletown, Monroe and Trenton, Ohio and celebrated Manufacturing Month with a series of educational student tours.

Within the industry, Deceuninck is fostering future leaders within the fenestration industry through its annual Future Fabricators workshop. Each year, the company welcomes current and future leaders of more than a dozen fabricator companies from Ohio, West Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Florida and Pennsylvania. The job fair that was held last summer showed how the use of traditional public relations and social media channels can reach a younger demographic – Deceuninck is excited to continue to pursue new and innovative ways to reach the next generation workforce.

PATIO DOORS CASE STUDY: Silver Laminate Project, Sioux Falls This former single-family neighborhood in Sioux Falls had become dilapidated. Signature Companies purchased land to build oneand two-bedroom townhomes, each including a garage and rooftop patios overlooking the downtown area of the city. The company built the first of four buildings using commercial aluminum windows, yet sought to complete the remaining buildings using silver laminated vinyl – Deceuninck’s eos and 620 systems – for their quality, appearance, durability and lower cost. The buildings became a source of revitalization in the neighborhood – with windows and patio doors nearly identical to the original aluminum building.

Recruit Workers, Manufacturers Go to Parents’ Nights

Job creation tax credits also paved the way for Deceuninck North America’s $27 million expansion, which will allow it to create 85 fulltime positions and retain 480 jobs, generating $4.5 million in new annual payroll and retaining $22.5 million in existing payroll...

In Story County, Iowa, where the unemployment rate is 1.4%, Kreg Enterprises Inc. held its first “Parents’ Night” earlier this year to tout careers in toolmaking. Toyota Motor Corp.’s manufacturing plant in Indiana held its first “Parents’ Night Out” in October and plans events for January and March. In Monroe, Ohio, building-materials maker Deceuninck North America this year began hosting parent events on evenings and weekends. The recruiting tactic aims to persuade today’s highly involved moms and dads that manufacturing work can lead to satisfying—and lucrative— careers for their children with the added benefit of keeping them nearby. It also reflects the strain low unemployment has put on manufacturers that have 400,000 open positions, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics...

Barclaycard is continuing its job growth with the renovation and opening of its third floor at Vora Technology Park. There’s just over 400 people employed by the Hamilton company now on the fourth and third floor. The new floor has room to add an additional 360 jobs.
