Editor's Letter The present pandemic is an abrupt specter in our daily lives, it may never be eliminated completely for anyone who lived through this year. Unless the much awaited vaccine will surface to vanish the anxiety to all of us. Struggles as it seems and survival is a challenge, each and every one must face the reality that life must go on, no matter what it is and we need to be thankful that we are alive and healthy. The sudden changes to everyone lives cannot only be seen how we live but also how we look. For instance, the “MUST WEAR A MASK” is no exception, even the Queen of England. It became fashionable and more comfortable to look. “A MASK IS A TREND” pp22. For us, endurance is what we believe in, for as long as the passion is burning to its peak, we keep moving, in much the same way that everyone feeling like everyone else. This is what we are….this what we live.

Fabergé Celebrates July’s Birthstone: Ruby R

ubies have an almost otherworldly quality that has captivated and delighted humanity throughout the ages. July’s birthstone has been featured in Fabergé’s collections for over a century. The colour of love and passion, rubies are as rare as they are regal. In ancient Sanskrit, this gemstone was called ratnaraj, which translates as ‘king of precious gemstones’. The colour spectrum of remarkable rubies varies from brownish-red to orangey-red to purplish-red to pinkish-red. Neither too dark nor too light, and evenly distributed throughout the gemstone, these hues are celebrated in all their glory within Fabergé’s collections of jewellery, timepieces and objects d’art. Fabergé was strongly attracted to these rare and majestic gemstones right from the beginning, with prominent creations dating back to 1893 (above, Moscow Branch Catalogue) signalling the start of the Maison’s love affair with rubies. The first Imperial Easter Egg – The Hen Egg – featured rubies set as the chicken’s eyes. Inside the hen there were also two ruby surprises, the first of which was a diamond version of the Imperial Crown with a tiny suspended ruby pendant (image below). Today, Fabergé continues to champion ‘a life in colour’ with its contemporary jewellery creations featuring a kaleidoscope of coloured gemstones, including an abundance of rubies.

The Mosaic Ruby Pendant is an example of Fabergé’s ability to paint with these special gemstones. Unexpected routine came out without consent and changed all our lives. Suddenly this pandemic appeared and fear starts to creep in. Fear of uncertainty, the vagueness of what will happen next, a threat to our lives, and our world or worse death. Our life stopped and we were unable to move forward. In the beginning, I felt that it was the end of the line, and we will not get over it. However, now that fear is ever-present, I have realized that we were missing many things and we had no time to enjoy life as it is. Therefore, I chose to vent it by working out, preparing healthy meals, spending quality time with my son, connecting with long lost friends, expressing how much I value my family and loved ones. I turned it into a positive vision, and start becoming optimistic. The virus has taught me that we are interconnected, that my actions do not only affect myself, but it also affects the people around me. In addition, not just the people but also the ecosystem. So more and more I learned that we are all in this TOGETHER. I realized that everyone is playing a role. And this is a perfect time to take action, to step up and do things collectively. Whether thru inspiring, encouraging, being of service, or helping. So I am doing my part in my own little way, like sending positive vibes, being extra nice, and showing extra grace. Everybody has something to share to make the situation lighter whether you are staying at home or staying at the hospital. I cannot change the past but I can do something for the future through focusing on the present. There is a saying that “As the night grew darker and darker, the dawn is getting closer and closer�. I claim and believe we are close to overcoming this pandemic. Lastly, Covid-19 along with precautionary distancing taught me to value every person in my life, to appreciate every hug and support, take every chance to see my beloved ones, or to take actions with my plans. You will never know. Life is unpredictable and can change in just one snap of a finger. Stay safe

Mall of Qatar reopens with gradual number of stores in Phase I

The Nation’s Mall Welcomes its vistors with full precaustions in place

I

n light of the recent decisions taken by The Supreme Committee for Crisis Management regarding the gradual lift of COVID-19 restrictions, Mall of Qatar welcomed visitors and staff to its facilities as it re-opened more than 100 stores in the first phase. The management of the Mall assures the public that all the necessary measures have been taken based on the Health and Safety Laws and the relevant instructions from the Government. The safety of its staff, tenants, and shoppers are of utmost importance for the Mall of Qatar. So in addition to the appropriate measures, extra procedures have been implemented to ensure a smooth and comfortable return to its premises. Emile Sarkis, General Manager, Mall of Qatar, said: “We are pleased to resume operations and happy to welcome visitors again to our Mall to offer them a safe and convenient shopping experience. Mall of Qatar is taking all the necessary precautions that guarantee the safety and health of our staff and shoppers alike. With its slogan “Welcome Back, We Missed You”, Mall of Qatar has already started an awareness campaign on its social media platforms that educates shoppers on the best way to follow safe shopping. Instructions are installed at the entrances and throughout the Mall to remind the public about the distances that must be observed and to sanitize their hands regularly. Throughout the mall corridor and hallways, hand sanitation stations are also installed. The Mall of Qatar urges all visitors to follow the instructions at the entrances and assures the public that the safety and health of visitors, employees, and tenants remain their top priority.

Covid-19 t o a c c e l e r at e shifts in higher e d u c at i o n By: Dr. Ali Malik, QFBA-Northumbria University

I

n the backdrop of recent health pandemic, the social and conventional media has been contemplating the emergence of new world order and the likely shift of power from West to East. Will this affect higher education too? Is West Europe and USA going to lose its long-held supremacy in higher education? The geopolitical shifts in higher education has in fact been an area of interest and discussion over the last few years. With UNESCO’s estimates of over 594 million enrolment by 2040, the landscape of this sector warrants serious attention. The regions of South, East and West Asia have experienced the highest growth in higher education enrolment over the last ten years and remain strong favourite to continue the momentum over the next ten years as well. The two third population in this region is likely to live in urban areas by 2050, and this unprecedented scale of urbanization is just one of the many reasons for continued growth in higher education enrolment. China continues to grow in influence not only in trade and commerce but also in higher education. China is very much the reason why East Asia is forecasted to be responsible for around 40% of total higher education enrolment by 2040. The Arab states will also emerge as a significant sector with over 23 million estimated enrolment by 2040. After the 2008 financial crisis, the Europe particularly UK and USA followed what have been labelled as anti-immigration policies. The student visa restrictions, fee hikes and abolition of post study work visa opportunities discouraged students from South and East Asia and countries like Australia, New Zealand and Canada emerged as popular alternative destinations to students from these regions. Where USA and UK keep a strangle hold on the top ten positions, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings have been throwing signals of late of likely change and shift in power. There have been significant movement beneath the top ten positions, and many institutions form China, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and India have barged into top 200 rankings. With growing trade and commerce dominance and the likelihood of money staying in Asia, the Asian higher education institutions are likely to attract massive investment necessary to build top class globally competitive universities. The European and American universities realized the shift a long ago and adopted a ‘reach out’ strategy by establishing campuses and pathway options in Asia. The presence of several European and North American universities in Qatar is an obvious example to support this view. The recent health pandemic interrupted the learning and teaching provision across the world and universities had to abruptly shift to online provisions. Some universities including Cambridge and Oxford have already announced to stay online for the 2021 academic year. The technology, particularly digital disruption, is seen by many as the way forward for affordable, flexible and quality higher education in the future. The UNESCO published a report in April 2020 on Covid-19 and higher education. Where the report has been skeptical of what will be the long-term scenario, it does see the need to gear up digitization, hybrid and ubiquitous learning. This is where Asian universities can compete with the American and European universities. The pandemic led financial crisis erodes income for millions of middle class families and is likely to have a significant effect on student mobility over the next five years and beyond. The health security will also be a major factor in decision making in this regard. It will be inappropriate to come to a firm conclusion, but it seems that ‘stay east, young man’ appears to be the short term scenario and this can lead to a rapid transformation in Asian higher education institutions. It is also highly likely for European and North American universities to accelerate strategies and reach out provisions to head across the continent to Asia.

couple of months ago, a medical mask was nothing more than a doctor’s attribute and today it is an obligatory part of any outfit even of the Queen of England. “You have to wear”: – said government, “We will create”: – responded ART. - This is how a trend was born. Fashion of the 21st century is most of the time - reaction or reflection of current events. Now, on TV screens and in the Instagram feed, there is one topic - COVID-19 and protection from this universal pandemic. The mask covers most of the face, leaving only eyes and forehead in sight. Such thing not new to Muslim women who wear niqab, interesting that the rest of us also already got used to the new accessory. Whether you want it or not, clothes still give out your attitude to the world and character traits. Proofy on this field can “read” a lot about you in appearance even before you open your mouth to tell about yourself. According to my observations in the city streets and in social networks, I would single out several types of masks as a way of self-expression:

DESIGN

The same mid-rear V8 two-seater architecture was also adopted for Ferrari’s first supercars, not least the 1984 GTO and 1987 F40, which have achieved iconic status amongst enthusiasts.

Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new exterior design language. From the very earliest stages of the design process, the work focused on two goals simultaneously: designing a stylistic tribute to the Ferrari V8 engine, inspired by the most iconic mid-rear-engined V8 sports cars in Ferrari history, and giving the car a strong personality of its own through an even sportier design clearly inspired by the car’s advanced aerodynamics. A lot of attention was paid to ensuring that the Maranello marque’s signature styling elements were respected even while seamlessly

The front of the car is characterised by the S-Duct around which the entire front end has been redesigned to highlight the extensive aerodynamic modifications made to this area of the car. The clearest example is new, more compact, horizontal LED headlights. Thanks to its more compact size, the classic L-shape is created not by the continuation of the headlights but by an aerodynamic intake. The front is completed by side aerodynamic intakes which are integrated into the shape of the bumper and feature two aerodynamic side splitters in black which create a visual link rearwards behind the wheel and onto the exterior sill covers.

INTERIOR The cockpit retains the classic, driver-oriented look typical of Ferrari’s mid-rear-engined berlinettas. Every element of the dash, door panels and tunnel has been completely redesigned specifically for the car. The F8 Tributo also boasts a new generation steering wheel and steering wheelmounted controls as well as new styling on the standard seats. New round air vents are set in beautifully sculpted aluminium surrounds (also available in optional carbonfibre) which cleverly underscore the dash structure. To emphasis the lightness of the whole assembly, the dash now incorporates an aluminium sail panel supporting the central satellite and continuing into the dash itself. Also to create a sense of visual lightness, a sliver of carbon fibre divides the upper and lower parts, streamlining the whole look. This section also incorporates the optional 7� touchscreen passenger-side display which provides an extra sporting touch. The dash is completed by the classic instrument cluster with its central rev-counter and the new-generation steering wheel and commands. The tunnel is clearly separated from the dash and set beneath it, once again to enhance the sensation of lightness that the car exudes. It features a new bridge, a prominent sculptural creation that seems to float and thus further streamlines the cabin.

The company has launched the highest standards of vehicles’ sanitization service to secure the ultimate levels of car hygiene from inside and outside, including AC systems. NEW STUDY EXPLORES THE WORLD’S NEW-FOUND LOVE OF RUNNING A

new study investigating running behaviours and mental health during lockdown including 14,000 people globally, reveals more people are running for mental benefits. • More than a third of regular exercisers are exercising more now than they were before lockdown. • 81% of runners say running helps to clear their mind and 79% say exercise is currently helping them feel more sane and more in control. • 73% of runner want to keep running as much as they are now after the pandemic ends. [9 JUNE 2020] – Amidst the confinement and isolation of lockdown, the world has fallen in love with running – that is according to a new study by ASICS. More importantly, the research shows nearly three quarters of runners plan to stick with their new exercise routine, The study of 14,000 regular exercisers across 12 countries, found that more than a third (36%) are more active exercising more now than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic began – despite most sports being brought to a standstill by social distancing measures. Meanwhile, figures from fitness-tracking app, Runkeeper, show that runners of every level are clocking up more strides, more often. During April 2020, the app saw a 252% rise in registrations globally and a 44% increase in monthly active users compared to the same time last year. It also reported a 62% spike globally in people heading out for a weekly run.

Running and feeling free

Yet the ASICS study also reveals that, for the majority of people, this activity surge is down to more than just physical health. Twothirds (67%) say exercise helps them cope mentally when faced with challenging situations like the one we are in now, while eight in ten (78%) runners say that being active is making them feel saner and more in control. A similar number (81%) say running is playing a key role in helping them clear their mind. Linda van Aken, VP Running, ASICS EMEA says: “Despite the lockdown and social distancing measures, exercise and running in particular have become central to many people’s daily lives. Our study’s findings prove that a run is much more than just a run, especially in times of crisis. It’s a way for people to put aside the mental pressures and challenges of this pandemic and feel free.” Dr Brendon Stubbs, one of the world’s most influential exercise & mental health researchers, based at King’s College London says: “As

one of the first multi-country studies, the results demonstrate that during lockdown, running has become a lifeline for many people to boost their physical and mental wellbeing. These findings support previous evidence which has demonstrated that regular exercise is effective to prevent and treat mental health conditions. Overall, the study by ASICS reinforces what we instinctively know: physical activity makes us feel better and never has there been a more important time to become active and experience the mental health benefits from movement.’’

Running past COVID-19

Furthermore, runners across the board are keen to keep their active habits going when this crisis is over. Nearly three-quarters of runners (73%) say they want to continue running as much as they are now after the Covid-19 pandemic comes to an end while seven in ten (70%) people who exercise regularly are determined to hang on to the important role sport and movement is currently playing in their lives. Perhaps most encouragingly, among those who only took up running after the COVID-19 crisis started, nearly two thirds (62%) say they plan on sticking with it in future.
