Battle for the Barrons’ ex-Assembly seat begins By ARIAMA C. LONG Amsterdam News Staff, Report for America Corps Member The special election for Assembly District 60 is in full swing as early voting kicked off this past Saturday. The seat was previously held by Assemblymember Charles Barron, who was just elected to City Council District 42. Candidates vying to replace him include Democrat Nikki Lucas, Working Families Party Keron Alleyne, and Republican Marvin J. King. Assembly District 60 encompasses the East New York, Starrett City, and parts of Brownsville neighborhoods in Brooklyn, and is primarily Black and Brown communities. Barron has held the State Assembly

and overlapping City Council seat off and on again over the course of the last 15 years with his wife, who also ran for and won the same seats at different times. However, as Barron was elected to city council for the 5th time in 2021, former Assemblymember and Councilmember Inez Barron decided last year that she would not be running for Assembly again. Her decision to retire leaves a gap in their stronghold on the districts and the opportunity for a new face in the office. She indicated in a public announcement last October that she and her husband would like that face to be long-time colleague and community organizer Keron Alleyne. Alleyne interned and worked for See ELECTION on page 22

Special election in Assembly District 60: Keron Alleyne By ARIAMA C. LONG Amsterdam News Staff, Report for America Corps Member East New York native Keron Alleyne is one of the main candidates running in the special election for State Assembly District 60, covering East New York, Starrett City, Brownsville, and Canarsie. Alleyne was part of Community Board 5 and served as Democratic male district leader for the 60th Assembly District. He also worked for former State Assemblymember and City Council member Charles Barron. Barron said that Alleyne is the best candidate for the district because he’s a family man, organizer, and a leader. “He did things like help senior citizens when they had snow in front of

their homes,” said Alleyne. “He’s a wonderful person and we’re very optimistic that Keron is going to be the next assembly member. We believe that he can win, and we’re in it to win it.” In terms of competition from fellow candidate Nikki Lucas, Alleyne said that his organizing work and community track records stand alone. He said he’s unconcerned about the “political machine.” He is running on the Working Families Party (WFP) line and has also been endorsed by State Sen. Jabari Brisport, Assemblymember Phara Souffrant Forrest, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher, Tenants PAC, New York Community for Change, and others. “We’re going to run an honorable See KERON on page 22

Special election in Assembly District 60: Nikki Lucas By ARIAMA C. LONG Amsterdam News Staff, Report for America Corps Member Community Activist Nikki Lucas is the Democratic nominee running in the special election for State Assembly District 60, covering East New York, Starrett City, Brownsville, and Canarsie. Last year, Lucas ran in a heated race for City Council in District 42 against pillar of the community Charles Barron and lost. She’s since made the pivot to running for Barron’s now empty state assembly seat. “I can go on and on about the issues that still exist and we have not seen legislation really authored out of this district for a district that has so many issues,” said Lucas about why she’s

running. “We should see more legislation and more protections put in place as well as resources and funding put into this area, and we just haven’t seen it. It would be criminal not to pursue being able to make a bigger change.” In a county committee meeting in Starrett City in January, Lucas was selected as the Democratic nominee for the special election. The Brooklyn Paper reported that the “weighted” vote of the committee members had Lucas winning with 13,882.5 votes over her competition from Working Families Party Keron Alleyne, who had 1,953.75 votes. Lucas said she earned the support of the community and residents who make up the committee and was happy to have it. See LUCAS on page 22

Brooklyn street being named after community organizer Nicholas Heyward Sr. A street renaming ceremony is being held on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. at Baltic and Hoyt streets in Brooklyn in honor of late community organizer Nicholas Heyward Sr., the father of young police shooting victim Nicholas Heyward Jr. The event is being organized by Heyward’s wife, Donna. In 1994, Nicholas Jr., who was 13, was playing with his friends with a toy gun in the stairwell of a Brooklyn NYCHA housing complex. He was fatally shot by a housing police officer who thought the toy gun was real. The officer involved, Brian George, was not charged as the case was not brought before a grand jury. After his son’s death, Nicholas Sr. dedicated his life to activism and community organizing. He led several protests against police brutality.

Family of Delrawn Small demands firing of NYPD Officer Wayne Isaacs following meeting with CCRB Victoria Davis and Victor Dempsey, siblings of Delrawn Small, Communities United for Police Reform, and the Justice Committee are demanding that NYPD Officer Wayne Isaacs, who killed Small in 2016, be fired. The group met with the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) regarding the case. Isaacs killed Small on July 4, 2016, in front of his 4-month-old baby, step daughter, and girlfriend. Surveillance video showed that Isaacs was in his car on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn when he rolled down the window and shot Delrawn, who was unarmed, within seconds and left him dying on the pavement while Isaacs called 911 for himself, falsely reporting an assault, but not the fact that he had just shot Small. The CCRB substantiated disciplinary charges against Isaacs in October of 2020. Despite two other notorious police killings happening days prior to Small’s killing—Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota, in which both officers are no longer with their respective departments— Isaacs remains on the NYPD’s payroll five and half years later. The NYPD waited months to serve charges on Isaacs and have yet to schedule a disciplinary hearing. This month, New York State Supreme Court Judge Verna L. Saunders dismissed NYPD Officer Wayne’s Isaacs’ Article 78 lawsuit, his baseless attempt to block his discipline trial.

Is he serious? De Blasio explores congressional run By STEPHON JOHNSON Amsterdam News Staff A little over a month past his two terms as mayor, Bill de Blasio wants to stay in your face…as a congressman. Perhaps? According to a recent report from the New York Post, the currently jobless de Blasio plans on forming an exploratory committee eyeing a run for congress. He would be challenging fellow Democrat Max Rose, who served one term as congressman in the 11th Congressional District, and current seat holder Republican Nicole Malliotakis (who beat Rose in the 2020 election). It’s something that political consultant Basil Smikle sees as a time-wasting effort. “It’s unlikely that a former mayor of New York City can be elected to any other office,” stated Smikle. “It’s rare that’s happened in the entire history of the city. But the redrawn lines might favor him as a candidate now more so than they ever did.” Smikle is referencing the recently redrawn district lines that were approved by the Democrat-

dominated state government. In southern Brooklyn particularly, the new lines swap out swing areas with liberal-leaning ones. Malliotakis’ district has historically covered all of Staten Island and small parts of Brooklyn. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has already gone on the offensive, tying Malliotakis to former president Donald Trump, whose presence looms over the Republican Party. With Malliotakis spokesperson Rob Ryan referring to the redrawn lines as an attempt by the state government to “steal” her seat, Democrats wasted no time firing back bringing up the Jan. 6 insurrection. “New Yorkers deserve to know whether Nicole Malliotakis will stand with law enforcement as they continue to investigate and prosecute violent insurrectionists, or whether she stands with the lawless ex-president and his promise of pardons,” said DCCC Spokesperson Abel Iraola in a statement. “Malliotakis is not just out of touch with New Yorkers, she’s downright dangerous—and See DE BLASIO on page 26

Time for Biden to boast his achievements, some say By HERB BOYD Special to the AmNews To say that President Biden is burdened with a heavy agenda of pressing issues is a gross understatement. But, as many of his constituents suggest, he can point to a number of positive developments from his administration. And at the top of that list is the report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics last week indicating the U.S. economy added 467,000 in January, several ticks above what had been forecast. Rather than reacting to the doom and gloom put forth by the opposition, and even from some of his devoted followers, Biden has a number of successes that he should begin touting as the midterm elections loom ever larger on the political horizon. Meaningful, too, is the considerable drop in COVID-19 cases, where according to Johns Hopkins University, hospitalizations are down 16%. Even so, the death rate remains high but that too may soon decrease. Members of his administration are requesting that he also

not shy away from his promise to appoint an African American woman to the Supreme Court. He is getting some pushback on this promise, one he made during his campaign and that was instrumental in bringing him the margin of victory. Drumming on these accomplishments, especially for those in his ranks dissatisfied with energy from the White House, would not only rouse his base but probably induce many of those independents and voters sitting on the fence. Biden’s stance on the military storm brewing in Eastern Europe with the Russians massing at the Ukraine border has been received as a strong and progressive one, with an added caveat that the deployment of some 3,000 troops to the region is merely one to bolster NATO with no aim to make a military advance in the Ukraine. In short, Biden needs to do something in a hurry to offset a recent poll that shows his public approval rating at the lowest since he took office, all of which is not a good report with the control of Congress one of the major consequences.

NewJerseyNews Booker introduces African American History Act in Senate By CYRIL JOSH BARKER Amsterdam News Staff

New Jersey U.S. Sen. Cory Booker introduced the Senate companion to New York Congressman Jamaal Bowman’s African American History Act. This legislation provides resources to strengthen opportunities to educate the American public about African American history and the impacts of racism, white supremacy, and the struggle for justice. Booker and Bowman’s legislation invests $10 million over 5 years in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) to support African American history education programs that are voluntarily available for students, parents, and educators. “The story of Black people in America is inextricably linked to the story of America,” Booker said. “This story must be reckoned with so that we can honestly reflect upon our nation’s past moral wrongs and the long and ongoing quest for justice that has been undertaken by Black Americans.” This bill will help the NMAAHC expand and improve upon their work in a variety of ways, including developing and maintaining a variety of accessible resources to promote an understanding of African American history. This includes a collection of digital content, housed on the NMAAHC website, to assist educa-

tors, students, and families across the country in teaching about and engaging with African American history. “It is our moral imperative to tell the truth about our past to finally reconcile with this nation’s history of racism and white nationalism, and our legislation will serve as a vital component in our fight to do just that,” said Bowman. “The moment we are in requires of us a cleareyed vision to ensure that not just our children but people of all ages have access to resources and education that accurately recount African American history.” The bill supports the NMAAHC’s work to increase national capacity for African American history education, including developing and disseminating high quality pedagogy related to teaching African American history and providing opportunities for Professional Development for early childhood, elementary, and secondary teachers. Said Booker, “As we begin Black History Month, I am proud to introduce this legislation that will invest in initiatives to make African American history education programs more accessible to the public, help educators incorporate these programs into their curriculum, and develop additional resources focused on Black History for students and families to engage with.”

Burlington County commissioners celebrating Black History Month by promoting local Black-owned businesses By CYRIL JOSH BARKER Amsterdam News Staff The Burlington County commissioners are spotlighting local Black-owned businesses throughout the month of February in celebration of Black History month and the important contributions Black Americans have made here in Burlington County and across the nation. “Black entrepreneurs, innovators, and artists are responsible for scores of inventions and advances, including the traffic light, automatic elevator doors and even caller ID,” said Burlington County Commissioner Felicia Hopson. “I can think of few better ways to celebrate these innovators and groundbreakers than by helping to support Blackowned businesses and enterprises located in our own community.” Sixty businesses are now listed on an interactive map of Black-owned businesses in Burlington County, up from two dozen originally listed in August when the map was first launched in honor of National Black Business Month. The map details the location of the businesses, their contact information and websites so that residents can easily find and patronize them. The map is posted on the Business Portal located on the Burlington County webpage under the “Burlington County Businesses” tab. There are also county maps listing Hispanicand Latino-owned businesses, women-owned

businesses and veteran-owned businesses. Besides the map, the commissioners are using the county’s social media sites to promote Black-owned businesses throughout the month, including on the County’s Shop Burlington County First page. State Sen. Troy Singleton and Evesham Deputy Mayor Heather Cooper also endorsed the initiative. “I am proud to live in Burlington County, often considered the ‘cradle of emancipation’ and home to so many historical connections to our State’s African American history,” said Singleton. “Undoubtedly, whatever gains we have today resulted from those who struggled in the past under unimaginable odds. We can honor those who came before us, in part, by supporting local Black-owned businesses right here in our communities.” Cooper, who has helped spearhead Evesham’s efforts to promote local small businesses through its Marlton Mondays initiative, said supporting Black-owned businesses helps all of Burlington County grow and thrive. “Black History is American History, and as the largest town in Burlington County, Evesham Township recognizes our rich culture and diversity,” Cooper said. “Yet no matter where you call home, we know that recognizing and supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs has always benefited our communities.”

Hekima Hapa: Instilling sustainability and innovation through Black Girls Sew Hekima Hapa is the founder of the nonprofit, community organization Black Girls Sew in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Not only is Hapa the founder, but she is a fashion designer and a business owner of Harriet’s by Hekima (HbyH), a Harriet’s Alter Ego company. Hapa is investing her over two decades of experience in fashion styling, fashion merchandising, sewing and designing to teach courses for Black Girls Sew to leave the youth excited about an education in sewing, design and entrepreneurship. The organization was founded in 2013 and offers a mixture of classes, workshops and camping programs, including their popular Sew Green Fashion Camp, which runs for six weeks during the summer. This camp is available for children between the ages of 7 and 16. Sewing machines are provided and the materials and supplies are free. Hapa said the first important part of the camp is the actual sewing. Through having the ability to sew, the children are able to make clothes for themselves and their families. “Our three basic necessities are food, clothing and shelter, so being able to produce one of the three helps them leave knowing how to make basic clothes,” she said. The second part of the camp that Hapa instills into the children is an understanding of sustainability. A main component of sustainability is avoiding or minimizing the depletion of natural resources, and in fashion that may mean a concern with the production of clothes and the lifespan of products. “Sustainable fashion is a big buzzword but it comes at a heavy price if you can’t afford organic cotton, etc. That puts many Black and Brown communities out of the equation, when sustainability is really a lifestyle,” Hapa said. To address environmental concerns in fashion, stretching wardrobe budgets, being able to mend something or turn one item into another are options. These are all things that the children at Black Girls Sew are able to consider or execute. Participants have the chance to be in a fashion show to showcase their creations and can sell the things they’ve made. For those that are taking entrepreneurship seriously and that have chosen to create their own businesses, their items can be selected to be sold at the retail space. “Each child leaves with their sewing machine. They are able to continue their sewing journey and really hone their skills.” Black Girls Sew also runs both children and adult sewing classes every other month on Sunday mornings. In these classes, there is the opportunity to learn and develop skills in areas such as threading techniques, seams, hems and

General Letitia James’ investigation vindicate him and stated that the investigation was “politically motivated.” “I never resigned because I said I did something wrong. I said, I’m resigning because I don’t want to be a distraction.” Too late. Cuomo has spent the last several weeks taking aim at his investigation, the women who accused him of sexual harassment. But it wasn’t just the sexual harassment scandal that dominated his last months as governor. There were alleged attempts to strongarm other elected officials hoping they’d acquiesce to his wants. “He’s just out there creating problems,” said Paterson. “With all of the allegations and all of the situations, you think he’d just take a year or two and just digest it, and think about the things he did wrong, think about what he was accused of. But he never stops. It’s always a new campaign, a new plan. But I think for the Democratic Party this is a needless distraction.” Cuomo making himself the topic of discussion is distracting from the current gubernatorial race as it stands. New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Long Island-based Congressman Tom Suozzi and Gov. Hochul are all vying for the Democratic ticket. Paterson told the AmNews, “I think if he thought he could beat Tish James, he’d run for attorney general, if he thought he could beat [current New York State Gov.] Kathy Hochul, he’d run for governor. But his conduct is starting to remind me more of Trump than a Democrat. off the flow of guns onto the streets. “Mayor Adams, you say that gun violence is a sea fed by many rivers,” said Biden at the meeting. “Well, I put forward a plan to dam up some of those streams. You can count on me to be a partner in that effort.” As a result, the White House and the U.S. Department of Justice are creating a gun trafficking strike force in the city and cracking down on the “Iron Pipeline,” or the illegal path of guns sold in the South and then transported up the coast. The DOJ plans on prioritizing federal prosecutions of unlawful gun sellers through “multijurisdictional task forces targeting interstate firearms trafficking.” They are also launching a National Ghost Gun Enforcement Initiative. He could run, but I think he would be surprised. If he runs, the women’s groups would tear him apart.” Paterson predicted, “And the other groups will not stand up for him because they don’t want to get in the middle of the attack on him from the women’s groups. The fact that none of the DAs indicted him, they all condemned the conduct. In other words, sexual harassment in the work place is not a criminal offense, but most people who do it get fired. That’s what happened to Charlie Rose…Matt Lauer…those chefs and all that. So they are not saying that he has to go to jail, but they are saying that he has to lose his job. He’s saying, ‘I’ll just come back, deny everything, like I always do, and I’ll beat Kathy Hochul or Tish James in a primary.’ I don’t think the mood is there from the party to allow that to happen. Remember, one of the reasons he resigned is they had 213 legislators—150 assembly members, and 63 senators— they had about 190 votes against him. This wasn’t going to be close.” So where does that leave current Gov. Hochul, who took over for Cuomo once he resigned? Even though this is her official first real campaign for governor, Hochul has established herself in Albany. Political strategist Basil Smikle said that her quickness in developing a rapport with local political figures puts her in the driver’s seat. “She’s running in some respects as an incumbent because even though, after a very short period of time, she’s established herself,” Smikle said. “She’s negotiated a budget, which has an opportunity to really do a lot for different communities across the state. She’s developed a really good relationship

with Eric Adams and has made herself known downstate. She’s certainly done a lot of work since she became governor.” But technically since Cuomo wasn’t officially impeached during the sexual misconduct scandal, he’s still able to run for office…including the gubernatorial race. And voters left to sort through the electoral quagmire, say if it came down to a choice between Cuomo and his former lieutenant governor Hochul? “I think white Democratic men would be more inclined to vote for Hochul,” Paterson mused. “I think Cuomo still gets some votes from the Black community, because he makes the attacks on him look like the attacks on some of the rest of us. “The anti-women people are Republicans. The Democratic male voter can support women candidates. That’s why in the City Council there are more women than men. “The other problem he’s got, is that all of his major supporters have all gone to Hochul, so whatever money he has, I don’t think he could raise much more on top of it. If he gets in the race, she can go back to the same people and raise $25 million before you know it, and he is still stuck on $16 million. “I don’t think he’ll enter the race.” Meanwhile, Hochul has done as much as possible to distance herself from the governor. She’s already stated that she wasn’t close to Cuomo. She’s gone on record saying that Cuomo actively tried to push her out of her lieutenant governor’s seat and find a new running mate. It was something Hochul called an “open secret.” The talk was that Cuomo wanted to replace her with a woman of color. No matter what Hochul, Williams, Suozzi or the rest do, Cuomo may remain a significant presence in the race. Political consultant Hank Sheinkopf spoke to the AmNews and said that crime was a main concern to not only

New York City, but in cities such as Rochester and Buffalo as well. “There is not much else that people are obsessed with,” Sheinkopf said. “Certainly upstate cities, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, there’s this general sense that things are out of control. “It has a lot to do with race,” Sheinkopf said. “And then it also has a lot to do with reality as a general sense that things are out of control. It makes it difficult in race relations. It makes the issue of crime difficult. The fact is that [the belief] exists tends to benefit people who are not in power, whether they be Republicans and/or Democrats that are more conservative.” Cuomo’s tough guy bravado, the type he displayed in the early days of the pandemic, and the type that allegedly tried to ruin political careers, could move the needle in the “tough on crime” revival of local politics. But Paterson said Cuomo is doing way too much, believing his own public persona and not weighing the reality of his situation. “My issue is this: Elliot Spitzer resigned in 2008, he came back five years later and ran for comptroller in 2013 against Scott Stringer. We didn’t hear from him for five years, and when he came back he talked about some things he had done to try and clean up his life. Here’s Andrew. He resigned on August 24 and then started the campaign to try and run for something on August 25. In other words he never stops talking. He never stops calling people. He called about a county committee vote in Harlem back in late September. He was out of office for a month and he was calling about one of the candidates. In other words he was born in politics and he doesn’t know how to get out. He doesn’t know how to do anything else.” Both Attorney General Tish James and Mayor Adams replied to AmNews’ requests for a response with separate “No comment” statements.

bled, homemade guns that are virtually untraceable and can be purchased with no background check. Under the currently outdated interpretation of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ federal gun laws, even people who can’t legally own a firearm can buy parts for a ghost gun, making it a “weapon of choice” for gun traffickers. Senator Robert Jackson, who sponsored a bill for harsher penalties for major firearms traffickers, said that despite “stringent” gun laws in New York, there are still weapons coming in. This past Sunday he held a gun prevention rally with community members, electeds, and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in Manhattan. “The bottom line is that we need to cut off the pipeline,” said Jackson. “Ideally what we need is federal law to have strict gun sale enforcement in our country. As you know, there’s more guns in this country than we have people.” Public Advocate Jumanne Williams in a statement said that he was “grateful” the president was paying attention to

the public safety and the gun violence epidemic. He said that collaboration across city, state, and federal government is vital to address local gun violence and gun trafficking. “It sends an important signal for the president to use this visit to meet not only with law enforcement, but with community organizations doing the work on the ground of preventing violence and saving lives,” said Williams. Biden also highlighted New York City as a national model for tackling gun violence and called on Congress to approve an additional $500 million nationwide in resources for community intervention, government partnerships, and assistance to local law enforcement. “Many of those guns, such as the one used to strike down two heroes, Detective Rivera and Detective Mora, are weapons of war,” said U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries in the meeting. “They’re not used to hunt deer. They’re used to hunt human beings. That’s not acceptable.” Last year, Jeffries said he advocated for

$5 billion for Break the Cycle legislation in the Build Back Better Act to reduce community violence. The legislation, which passed the House in November, would fund community-based policing and violence interruption programs. City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams added, in a statement, that the increase in violence was multifaceted, necessitating a multipronged solution. She promised that city council’s policies would align with federal public safety goals. “The recognition that both the NYPD and violence prevention programs are essential pillars of our public safety infrastructure is equally important,” said Speaker Adams. THE POWER OF REAL ENTRY:

February 10, 2022 - February 16, 2022 • 7

HOW UNION CONSTRUCTION CAREERS UPLIFT BLACK WORKERS

I became a member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America in 1988. For nearly twenty-five years I have mentored and trained laborer apprentices in New York City, including many Black women and men who had little or no prior experience in construction or in unions. This year I assumed full directorship of Laborers’ Local 79’s Apprenticeship Program. I also currently serve as an elected official on the executive board of the union. As I reflect on my role at Local 79 during Black History Month, I can’t help but think of pioneering Black women organizers like Ella Baker who paved the way for me and countless others. Baker played a crucial but often overlooked role in the civil rights movement. She nurtured and inspired young people, students, and workers of all races and backgrounds to combat racial injustice – not just where it is most visible, but everywhere it exists in our society. In her 1960 speech, “Bigger than a Hamburger,” Baker noted that the goal of sit-ins and demonstrations was “to rid America of the scourge of racial segregation and discrimination—not only at lunch counters, but in every aspect of life,” including in the workplace and economy. Many of the apprentices I have taught over the years were affected by the justice system, and served lengthy sentences in prison. But like the sit-in activists and organizers of Baker’s generation, the most successful people who show up for training in Local 79’s Apprenticeship Program have a clear drive and determination to change their lives, and the world, around them. This is actually most evident among the formerly incarcerated Black apprentices I have trained throughout my career. Black people lose years of their lives behind bars. And when they come home, they are usually funneled into dehumanizing low-wage jobs that drag them down instead of lifting them up. But when they complete Local 79’s Apprenticeship Program, they are given tools and opportunities to flourish in a union career building the city and become part of a union community. Formerly incarcerated workers are often described as re-entry workers. But many Black workers who come to Local 79 after getting released from jail never had any real point of entry into a good job or career to begin with. A big part of what we do at my union is create real entry into union construction careers for Black workers and others who have been excluded from them. The segregation and discrimination Baker condemned decades ago is still with us. But I am proud to help Black workers move from apprenticeships to jobs to careers in union construction, where they earn fair wages and benefits, and attain economic security. These women and men join our family of union members who understand how our organization helps create good-paying career paths that are still too often denied to Black workers. Real entry into the construction industry enables Black workers to build power and wealth, and achieve career advancement, while advancing economic and racial justice for ourselves, our families, and our communities. The growing number of Black members of Local 79 who have become homeowners are examples of this real entry in action. With respect, I urge Eric Adams, our city’s second Black Mayor since David Dinkins, to support and implement policies that will create real entry into our city’s economy and unionized construction industry for Black and working-class New Yorkers who have too often been left behind. A real entry agenda will not only empower Black and Brown communities hit hardest by COVID and systemic racism, but also create public safety, justice, and shared prosperity. The time for real entry is now.

JANET & BOBBY—TWO OF OUR ONE-NAME R&B GREATS

(Photo Touch photos)

Although I didn’t catch it as it aired originally this week, it won’t be long before I take in the current talk of the town, in the two-part Lifetime documentary, “Janet.” Part of the reason myself and a few others I ran across missed the original airing was because while we knew of the project, it wasn’t ingrained as to when the show would air. Could be because aside from being a legendary artist, no other project is associated with Janet Jackson at the moment. That will not be the case when the next big documentary on one of music’s iconic figures hits the screen. Let me explain. On February 16, the Columbus Civic Center in Columbus, Ga. plays host to the first of a 30-city national trek of the Culture Tour, headlined by Ricky Bell, Mike Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, Bobby Brown, and Ralph Tresvant: the collective known as New Edition. In a recent appearance on Entertainment Tonight, Ronnie assured that this is not a money grab reunion. Far from it. “It’s not about New Edition, it’s about Brotherhood, it’s about people passing. Let’s just mend fences on THAT level. We miss each other.” For the one-time King of Stage, Bobby Brown the tour adds another layer. “You know, I’ve been through a lot in the past and, you know, just getting through it and being able to love what I love, which is entertainment again, is just something special,” Brown tells ET hostess Nischelle Turner. The sentiments are not just sincere, in Brown, however. He has a dedicated fan base as a member of the New Edition and as a solo artist, who await expectantly for the spectacle to hit their town. If all parties involved hold up their end of the bargain, all participants of the tour can bask again in the winner’s circle. To help enhance his chances, A&E Network gives viewers VIP access to music icon and Grammy Award-winner Bobby Brown and his family with a new definitive biography event and docuseries launching this summer. With more than 20 million records sold worldwide with New Edition, a solo career selling in excess of 12 million records, five gold singles, three No. 1 R&B hits, a Top 100 No. 1 hit, the New York Times best-selling author and one of Billboard Magazine’s

Top 60 Male Artists of All Time details his transformation from Bad Boy artist to a responsible husband and father. Through exclusive access and interviews, the definitive documentary “Biography: Bobby Brown” gives fans an up-close-and-personal look at the American Music Award winner’s journey to superstardom and the fallout from his personal struggles with sobriety and the tragic deaths of his two children and first wife, Whitney Houston. The new 12-episode series “Bobby Brown: Every Little Step” takes us in to present day for an exclusive look at his life with wife Alicia Etheredge-Brown and their children as he focuses on new business ventures, new music as well as the 2022 reunion with New Edition on The Culture Tour. “Biography: Bobby Brown” two-night event airs Monday, May 30 and Tuesday, May 31 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. “Bobby Brown: Every Little Step” premieres Tuesday, May 31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT with new episodes airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT starting June 7. In exclusive interviews, the R&B icon unveils his struggles with substance abuse, his marriage to Whitney Houston, the devastating loss of Houston and his two children and his life as a devoted father and husband to Alicia Etheredge-Brown. Confronting his very personal yet very public struggles, Brown recounts what it was like to become a music phenomenon at such an early age in this tell-all documentary. To come to terms with his tumultuous past, Bobby, for the very first time, visits the gravesite of Whitney Houston and daughter Bobbi Kristina and holds a deeply moving tribute in honor of Bobby Junior. The documentary includes interviews with Usher, Jermaine Dupri, Keith Sweat, Babyface, his New Edition bandmates as well as his family, friends and those who experienced this journey with him. Over the course of two nights, viewers will get to hear neverbefore-heard stories as they reflect on Bobby’s life both on and off stage. Now that’s how a program gets promoted. Over and out y’all. Holla next week. Till then, enjoy the nightlife.

February: A month to grow Gregory Floyd

February has been described as the border between winter and spring. To former Major League Baseball player and manager, Whitey Herzog, the month of February had even greater importance. As Herzog put it: “You sweat the free agent thing in November, then you make the trades in December, then you struggle to sign the guys left in January, and in February, I get down to sewing all the new numbers on the uniforms.” The takeaway is that, although February is the month with the fewest days, it’s not short on significant days…days of fun and folly, and days of remembrance, reflection, and religious observance. February is also the month where we look to a groundhog to forecast our future…which recently turned out to be a most dangerous job for at least one groundhog who was dropped on his big day and is now a deceased weather prognosticator. February has many other special days, leaning more to lighthearted observances such as Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, Bubble Gum Day, and Margarita Day. Then there’s Super Bowl Sunday, a national, all-inclusive “holiday” of sorts celebrated from coast to coast and where the commercials and halftime are sometimes talked about as much as the main event. From Oscar night to Valentine’s Day, to Fat Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, to two presidents’ birthdays celebrated in one day, to a two-week celebration of the Lunar New Year, to two weeks of Winter Olympics, to the once in four years, add-a-day to the month, Leap Year, February has more than 30 different days on which someone, somewhere in our nation, observes a special occasion. Then there’s February, Black History Month. It’s a time to celebrate and educate. It’s a time to acknowledge the accomplishments, delight in a rich heritage and retell the history of a people too often forgotten, mistreated, and misunderstood. The originators of the idea for a Black history celebration were historians Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson, and his associate, Jesse E. Moorland. They created the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in

1915, to promote Black history and recognize achievements of African Americans. But they knew that was not enough. As Woodson argued, “If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition; it is a negligible factor in the thoughts of the world and stands in danger of being exterminated.” So, in 1926, they launched “Negro History Week,” on the second week of February, because both President Abraham Lincoln’s and abolitionist Frederick Douglass’ birthdays coincided. But it took 50 years for the week to become a month; President Gerald Ford created Black History Month in 1976. Today, Black History Month is not without controversy. To some critics, the argument goes that empowerment is not accomplished by one month of recognition. Some find it outdated, only symbolic, not necessary, and even separatist. For me, there is no controversy. Black History Month is not about validation, it’s about involvement; it’s about action. It’s both a time of recognition and a call to duty. In labor unions, there’s an important organizing principle used to increase our numbers, demonstrate power and harvest our next generation of unionists— which is applicable here. Especially in order to grow a cadre of potential leaders who will take us to the next plateau, we must inspire and excite young people. We must also remember and thank those who have led the way with words and actions that changed history. Surely, there is tremendous wisdom in the words of Winston Churchill, who said: “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” The celebration of February as Black History Month should not be about avoiding mistakes, but instead, about creating more accomplishments, breaking more barriers, and earning the respect of all people. Traditionally, February is the month for acknowledging “The Best” in many categories, so, let’s use the occasion to honor our own list of “Best in Class” and work to add more names to it. For sure, the list is already long with many giants and “firsts” among them including Dr. King, President Obama, and (hopefully) the next justice of the Supreme Court. But Black History Month—which remembers the past, celebrates the present and looks to the future—should also be a time that helps to motivate our next generation of champions in the struggle for equality and dignity. The list is never too long.

Throughout our ongoing struggles with China, one key battle appears to have already been won by our adversary: the battle for arts and entertainment. Boasting a population of over 1.4 billion people, many of whom have the financial means to pay for and consume a wide variety of forms of entertainment, their market share for television, movies, and art rivals that of the actual country that produces the films—the United States. With a powerful government that has no qualms about restricting both media and the messages that their citizens consume, China has the ability to cut a movie’s box office earnings in half, obliterate television show viewership numbers, and completely deny entertainers and celebrities any form of notoriety within their country at the push of a button. China’s impact on major American films is extremely strong, but very subtle, so subtle that it would go unnoticed by the public if it weren’t for eagle-eyed viewers. This style of influence is predicated on the omission or subtle alteration of information rather than a clear, unequivocal message. One such instance occurred in mid-2021, when the longawaited sequel to the 1986 film “Top Gun,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” sparked outrage within the United States when it was revealed in the trailer that the bomber jacket worn by Tom Cruise in the film, the same jacket worn in the 1986 version of the film, had the flags of Japan and Taiwan removed and replaced with random symbols. This would not be significant if the jacket was not otherwise identical to the jacket in the former film, but the fact that these two nations’ flags were replaced is an unmistakable demonstration of Chinese coercion; this conclusion is especially convincing considering the conflicts that China has with the two countries omitted. In one of the most embarrassing instances of a celebrity kowtowing to Chinese pressure in recent memory, John Cena, a prominent, A-list, American actor, while conducting an interview promoting the film “Fast and Furious 9,” exclaimed, “Taiwan is the first country to watch ‘Fast and Furious 9.’” The mere suggestion of Taiwan as an independent country seemed to be too far beyond the pale for China to bear listening to, subsequently landing John Cena between a rock and a hard place, with escape from either direction being at the cost of his career or his reputation. Inevitably, he chose the path most followed, and embarrassingly portrayed himself as a Chinese sympathizer who cared more about the feelings of Chinese wallets than he did for the United States’ ally, Taiwan. “Fast and Furious” films frequently

gross twice as much in China as they do in the United States; it’s clear that the studio likely pressured John Cena to make a humiliating apology to China. John Cena apologized in Mandarin in his video and pleaded for forgiveness for his “mistake,” which he stated, “I made a mistake, I’m so, so sorry for my mistake. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m very sorry. You have to understand I love and respect China and Chinese people. I’m sorry.” As a result of this controversy, John Cena became an internet joke overnight; dubbed as “John Xina,” you can find images of his face Photoshopped over an image of Mao Zedong. If that wasn’t enough, Lady Gaga was barred from performing in China just because she visited with the Dalai Lama in 2016, Brad Pitt was banned for nearly 20 years because he starred in the film “Seven Years in Tibet,” and more recently, Keanu Reeves has run into trouble with Chinese censors for his presence at a Tibet benefit concert. These are only a few examples of the Chinese government’s censoring of big-name entertainers, many of which are known, and likely even more which are unknown. The main problem is that China’s economic system serves a dual purpose: it employs a form of government-run capitalism that both encourages industry growth through private investment, while at the same time a big brother government keeps a close eye on them, waiting for them to succeed so that they can pounce and reap the benefits of a wider reach through new, innovative technology. This is true in both the entertainment and technology industries, with the Chinese government’s influence pervading practically every area of both. For example, the Chinese government has forced WeChat, a popular social media platform in China with over 1 billion users, to give away all of its users’ data so that the government can better manage and track them. WeChat would not exist if it weren’t for private investment, and it wouldn’t be misusing its users’ data if it weren’t for the government. Truth ends where censorship begins. This is true in many facets of life, including in entertainment, social media, public spaces, and sidewalks; when someone’s lips are sewn shut, ideas cannot develop, and consequently truth will never come to be. For a government seeking to maintain control over its citizens’ daily lives, censorship is the most effective instrument for persuading them to believe what it wants, yet there will come a day when people care more about the ideals of freedom than the entertainment they consume. When that moment comes, a choice between censorship and freedom will materialize, and American movie studios will have to decide which of those two markets they prefer. Caribbean Update

Some carnivals return this year; Haiti scrubs theirs altogether By BERT WILKINSON Special to the AmNews Despite the fact that the number of fatalities and COVID infection rates are declining, a number of Caribbean governments have decided to play it safe this year and are either canceling or severely scaling back on high revenue-earning annual carnival celebrations this year. Haiti’s crisis-beleaguered government is the latest to serve notice that this year will be no different from last year. On Sunday, it dashed any hopes of a carnival staging this year, with the culture ministry not only blaming the pandemic for its decision but also the country’s tenuous security situation. The celebrations were to be held this month, ending like in Trinidad and Brazil, just before Ash Wednesday. “Carnival has always been a traditional and popular festival celebrated in all the large and medium-sized cities of the country. The government, because of the economic difficulties faced by the country, has decided this year not to organize a national carnival, but to support certain town halls who wish to offer their community carnival festivities by evaluating

the health and security risks,” the announcement stated. Haiti, beset by a number of problems including unwanted American and western interference in daily affairs, organized crimes and frequent natural disasters, has encountered serious problems acquiring large amounts of vaccine doses in addition to facing vaccination hesitancy among its 11 million-plus population; hence the reluctance of authorities to allow for a full celebration that includes a massive street carnival. Down south in Trinidad, authorities there say they will use a limited number of events this year as an experiment in staging large public events in the midst of the pandemic. Not held in the past two years, the administration of Prime Minister Keith Rowley has decided to allow a limited number of events only for fully vaccinated people. The world class two-day street carnival and some of its associated events have been scrubbed altogether as well as the famous pre-carnival fetes and other public events as fears these will be super spreaders. For events like concert-type shows

which will be allowed, fully vaccinated fans will be placed in socially-distanced safe pods in family and related groups. Capacity would be at 50%. Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh says he believes this year’s limited edition dubbed as a “Taste of Carnival” can be successfully staged if protocols can be observed. He is also optimistic about large public events making a return later this year. “We are in full support of the ministry of tourism, culture and the arts to start to reopen the entertainment sector as carefully as possible as they are doing. Whatever risks, they all will be mitigated by the fact that patrons coming into these events are going to be fully vaccinated. I can’t predict what the future will bring at this point in time,” the minister said. “We are taking very brave measures to open up as many sectors in society as possible, especially to those people who are vaccinated.” In neighboring Guyana, authorities are yet to announce plans for this year even though celebrations including the street costume parade are normally held on Feb. 23. Rates of fatalities and infections

have been coming down in the past two weeks after massive spikes in the postChristmas season that saw an average of more than 1,000 cases daily and up to six deaths daily. The success story for the region, meanwhile, has to do with the smaller Eastern Caribbean nations like St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Grenada, Dominica and Antigua. Antigua, St. Vincent and St. Lucia have all indicated plans to stage normal celebrations this year as officials think they have enough lead time to the mid-year calendar to monitor infections and stage these events successfully. Combined, these smaller islands have recorded less than 150 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic in March of 2020. Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of St. Vincent, said on a radio program Sunday that observance would be had this year especially if the vaccine rate can reach 70%. “Every society needs occasions where you have releases, it’s a catharsis. You are doing work all the time and you have to have something where you let off your energy. There is a need for some kind of collective relief, at least, so we think in the cabinet,” he said.

Lassoing horse riders are out as robotic dogs are in, in Biden’s America FELICIA PERSAUD

IMMIGRATION KORNER Get ready for robotic dogs at the U.S. southern borders. Yes, you read that correctly. In Biden’s America, the lassoing horse riding agents went out with 2021 as the administration gears up to set robotic dogs loose on immigrants. So appalling is the plan that the American Civil Liberties Union on Thursday, Feb. 3, called it “a civil liberties disaster in the making.” “The government must retract this dangerous proposal, and the Biden administration must put the brakes on our country’s slide into an anti-immigrant dystopia,” the advocacy group said in a statement. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), for its part, said people should not be “surprised if in the future we see robot ‘Fido’ out in the field, walking side-by-side with [CBP] personnel.”

The DHS said last week that its research and development arm had offered border guards “a helping hand (or ‘paw’)” to work to “force-multiply” patrols. “Due to the demands of the region, adding quadruped mechanical reinforcements is a smart use of resources,” the DHS said in a blog post. According to the UK Guardian report, “The unarmed 100 pound, 4-legged robots will be able to walk on natural and humanbuilt terrain.” The robots were tested in El Paso, Texas, on the international border and in Virginia. “In a desert area, the dogs were programmed to go on simulated sentry duty,” DHS said. It suggested that the bulky metal robots could even be used “as cover” for border guards. “Just like anywhere else, you have your standard criminal behavior, but along the border you can also have human smuggling, drug smuggling, as well as smuggling of other contraband—including firearms or even potentially, [weapons of mass destruction],” agent Brett Becker, of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)

innovation team, was quoted as saying. Wow! Just when you thought we had seen it all with Donald putting children in cages, along comes the Biden administration, with its daughter of immigrants veep, with horse riding agents throwing out lassoes at Black immigrants and now robotic dogs. The mere idea of dogs in Black History Month brings back horrible and bitter memories of dogs being let loose by racist white police on Blacks in the fight for civil rights in 1963. It is appalling and makes me sick to my stomach that in 2022, a Democratic administration that won the office based largely on the votes of Blacks and immigrants, would think such a plan was okay. It is also why I have no hesitation in supporting another Day Without Immigrants. All immigrants need to support the day this year on Valentine’s Day, February 14. “Valentine’s Day is one of the days with the most economic activity in the whole year,” immigrant advocate and influencer Carlos Eduardo Espina says. “But underneath all

the celebrations are millions of documented and undocumented immigrants that sustain the economy.Yet, these same immigrants continue to be mistreated and denied a path to permanent legal status.” “Hell yeah,” said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) when asked about the initiative by the Latino Rebels show on Wednesday. “Strikes, general strikes, whatever it takes for people to realize the value of immigrant labor. I mean, you take a date to a nice restaurant, who do you think is making the food? Who do you think has the hands that feed us? I support any sort of action or efforts that our immigrant community and those who stand in solidarity with them are committing to highlight the necessity that they have in our system.” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) echoed OcasioCortez’s sentiments. “That’s really great,” she said. “Excellent initiative!” Let’s make it happen and send a clear message that using immigrants for their votes and then discarding them will not be tolerated by any administration—not ever! Last-minute Valentine’s Day gift guide By LAPACAZO SANDOVAL Special to the AmNews Valentine, who later became St. Valentine, was a priest who sent the first “valentine” greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine.” True story or not, if you are looking for interesting things to do this Valentine’s Day in New York City and Harlem there are some interesting choices to celebrate these fallen lovers who have somehow managed to turn an incarcerated man’s pining for love into a holiday celebrated around the world. In Ghana on Feb. 14 it’s National Chocolate Day, which was began by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority and Cocoa Processing Company, Ghana Cocoa Board, and other stakeholders in 2007. In South Africa, most couples celebrate the day with romantic dinners, chocolates, and gifts. However, some people follow the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, from which some historians draw links with the origin of Valentine’s Day. In South Korea, couples celebrate the day of love on the 14th of each month. The day of roses is celebrated in May, the day of kisses in June, and the day of hugs in December. Valentine’s Day is celebrated monthly from February through April. On Feb. 14, women woo their men with chocolates, candies, and flowers. On March 14, a holiday known as White Day, men return the favor by showering their lovers with chocolates and flowers. Here are some gift suggestions for the loved one in your life, that might have a long-lasting and practical impact. FOR HIM & HER The best way to a lover’s heart is through their stomach. ‘Tap Dance Kid’ hits the mark at NY City Center! By LINDA ARMSTRONG Special to the AmNews I love that the Encores! Series at the New York City Center seems to delight in presenting productions that take the audience back in time to some of the fantastic musicals we remember from our childhoods. For this past week only, performances were staged of the phenomenal, “The Tap Dance Kid.” Yes, I said “The Tap Dance Kid”—can you remember the original production? I certainly can! I was so excited just to see that it was being presented for a brief engagement this weekend—so excited! But my joy was increased ten-fold when I saw the creative team behind it: Lydia R. Diamond did the concert adaptation of the book by Charles Blackwell; there were new, dazzling tap sequences by choreographer Jared Grimes; and splendid direction by Tony award winning director Kenny Leon. The revival also had music by Henry Krieger, lyrics by Robert Lorick and guest musical direction by Joseph Joubert. This stunning musical had the audience cheering, applauding and amazed as it told the story of Willie, a 10-yearold boy who comes from a well-off Black family and dreams of being a tap dancer like his uncle Dipsey and famous grandfather, Daddy Bates. Willie’s dream is something that his father William fights

Alexander Bello with cast members of “The Tap Dance Kid” (Joan Marcus photo)

against, as he wants Willie to follow in his footsteps and become a lawyer. The dynamic of this family is quite interesting. As the father William tries to run everyone’s lives, from Willie’s to his daughter Emma’s to his wife Ginnie’s, he finds that when you run people’s lives and ignore how they feel, you run the risk of losing everything that means something to you. This musical is a tribute to the great tap dancers of our time; Bill Bojangles Robinson, the Nicholas Brothers and Sammy Davis Jr. and other tap greats were named in the show, but it was also an intoxicating, original and mesmerizing display of some of the most dynamic tap numbers you would hope to see. There is just something inspiring and uplifting about

watching marvelous tap dancers who make it look effortless. The vocals were also something to write home about. Alexander Bello played the 10-year-old kid with an enormous love for tap, singing and entertaining. (You may recognize his name from his recent starring role in “Caroline, Or Change” on Broadway.) He has a splendid vocal instrument and proved to be a brilliant dancer. Shahadi Wright Joseph was absolutely phenomenal as his older sister Emma, who speaks up against the father’s tyranny and has the ability to be a fine lawyer one day. Her singing was stupendous! Adrienne Walker was stunning as Ginnie, Willie’s mother. She is a woman trying to be loyal to her husband William, de-

spite his dictatorial tone with her and the children. Walker sang beautifully. When it came to singing however, the house came down when Joshua Henry, who played William, sang of his displeasure about his son being a dancer. Henry’s voice is so rich, so powerful, so distinctive—it just left everyone frozen, waiting to burst into uncontrollable applause! A tap dancer extraordinaire—Dewitt Fleming Jr.—commanded the role of Daddy Bates, Willie’s deceased grandfather, who had been a famous tap dancer. He did it all and with passion and extraordinary grace! Trevor Jackson gave his all as Dipsey, Willie’s uncle who is a tapper and choreographer trying to mount a musical that shows great love to this wonderful dance form. Tracee Beazer was memorable as Dipsey’s love interest and a performer in his company, Carole. Chance Smith was fine as Winslow. The Encores! Orchestra provided vibrant music and beautifully supported this fantastic work. While the featured performers were dazzling, I can’t begin to describe the tremendous talent of the ensemble dancers. These many men and women will ensure that this incredible dance form lives on with splendor, grace and excitement! When you hear about a production happening as part of Encores! Series at New York City Center, get your ticket! For more information, visit www.nycitycenter.org.

Harlem’s National Jazz Museum to host ‘Soul’ exhibit Disney’s regional jazz exhibit, “The Soul of Jazz: An American Adventure,” opens at The National Jazz Museum in Harlem on Feb. 10, coinciding with Black History Month. Visitors are joined by Joe Gardner—the musician, mentor and teacher from Disney and Pixar’s “Soul”—on a tour as they discover the rich and surprising history of jazz. Disney is thrilled to partner with The National Jazz Museum to bring this experience to Harlem—a city well-known for its vibrant jazz scene, which fueled the careers of many future jazz icons. Acting as a tribute to a musical artform that was originated by African Americans, the exhibit illustrates the many different cultures and creators who influenced this evolving genre. MICKEY BASS, RENAISSANCE BASSIST/COMPOSER, DIES AT 78

Mickey Bass, the consummate bassist, composer, arranger and educator, who played with everyone from Art Blakey to Lee Morgan and taught four generations of aspiring jazz musicians, died at his Harlem apartment on February 3. He was 78. His death was confirmed by his long-time companion. A cause of death was not given. Right through his last days of life, Bass was actively working on various projects including looking for a venue in Harlem where he could offer music classes and live concerts. He continued his private music and bass instructions on a weekly basis in his apartment. He taught his students theory based on his experience and his authored book “The Diminished Whole Tone Concept: An Advanced Approach to Jazz Improvisation” (2006). In the book’s sleeve he wrote, “This is a book, written by a working musician for musicians…who want to work.” The book’s concept came about in 1975, when Bass was invited to teach at the then-newly formed Ellington School of the Arts, in Washington, D.C. (1975-’78). As a result, he formed Ellington Jazz Ensemble with soon-tobe jazz stars Wallace Roney, Antoine Roney, Clarence Seary, and Eric Allen. As director of the Ensemble, Bass composed, arranged and orchestrated all the music. In 1977, the Ensemble along with Bass were invited to perform at the White House as part of the inaugural festivities for President Jimmy Carter. Bass was the curriculum coordinator and music instructor for the education program at Jazzmobile in 1965 and remained an active instructor at the community-based non-profit jazz organization until his transition. Bass also taught at two elementary schools in East Harlem. As a result he co-authored another book with Dr. Billy Taylor, “An Arts Enrichment Educational Program,” a teaching primer for elementary education, published through Jazzmobile, Inc. As a prominent composer and arranger Bass was awarded two grants: National Endowment for the Arts, Composer’s Grant, in 1980, for which he wrote for string quartet with jazz rhythm section and percussion. In 2017 he received a composer’s grant from Chamber Music America. Bass, who played piano, bass and flute proficiently, made it clear he was greatly influenced by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Rep. Josiah Walls, Florida’s first Black Congress member

By HERB BOYD Special to the AmNews

In last week’s column we took a deep southern dive in our discussion of Vivian Malone. This week the divecontinuestoplumbevendeeper thanGeorgiatoFlorida.Andwithour profile of Rep. Josiah Walls we travel farther back into the past as well, and like Malone a significant first can be added to his resume. Walls was born into slavery in Winchester, Virginia, on Dec. 30, 1842. It was widely presumed that his father was Dr. John Walls, his master, with whom he kept a close relationship over the years. During the Civil War, Walls was forced into conscription as a Confederate artilleryman and was eventually captured by Union soldiers in 1862. After being emancipated by his captors, he briefly attended the county normal school in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Soon, he was a member of the 3rd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Colored Troops and based in Philadelphia. In 1864, his regiment moved to territory in Florida then occupied by Union forces. That June he was transferred to the 35th Regiment of the USCT where he became the first sergeant and artillery instructor. It was during this stint in Picolota, Fla. that he met and married Helen Fergueson, withwhomhehadonedaughter. He was discharged from the military in October 1865 but chose to remain in Florida, subsequently gaining employment at a saw mill on the Suwannee River and later as a teacher with theFreedmen’sBureauinGainesville. A frugal, hard worker by 1868 he had saved enough money to purchase a 60-acre farm outside the city. His ambitions were bolstered by the education he had acquired, giving him an advantage to improve his status in the political realm, unlike so many other Black men of his generation. He launched his political career as a representative of the state’s Alachua County at the Florida constitutional convention in 1868, the same year he was elected a state assemblyman. In 1869, he was elected to the state senate and was among the five freedmen in the 24-member chamber. In 1871, he attended the Southern States Convention of Colored men in Columbia, S.C. It

should be noted that Walls’ ascendance is not without incidence in these waning years of Reconstruction, still he and Black elected officials fought valiantly to hold to their positions. Black voters were consistently intimidated, especially by the rise and rage of the KKK. This fear and intimidation was also felt by

Thus, Walls became the first African American to serve Florida in Congress. Despite his victory, he was unseated twice by the House Committee on Elections. Most of his time was spent fighting to hold his seat and advocating for compulsory educationandeconomicopportunityfor all races. “We demand that our lives, our liberties, and our property shall Rep. never gained traction, never made it out of committee. He did, however, manage to gain pensions for Seminole War veterans who fought several battles against the state’s indigenous population. Among Walls’ most passionate demands were those waged for equality in education, particularly one entered in the Civil Rights Bill 1875, a measure thatwasstruckfromthebilljustbefore the vote. Walls was exercised that he abstained from voting. “I reluctantly confess, aftersomanyyearsofconcessions, thatunlesspartisanandsectional feeling shall lose more of its rancor in the future than has been experienced in the past...fundamental law will be disregarded, overthrown, and trampled underfoot, and a complete reign of terror and anarchy will rule supreme,” he said in his address to the House floor. In 1874, Florida was split into two congressionaldistricts, andWallswas thecandidateintheeasternhalfofthe peninsula, and this fractured the Republican Party and more trouble arrived with the economic depression. Even so, Walls had maximized his entrepreneurial ventures, amassed considerable wealth, all of which gave him an advantage in the subsequentelection.Onceagainhefaceda formidableopponentandamember of the Whig Party. Voters, as expected, cast their ballots along party lines. And Walls won by a slim margin. He was now a member of the 44th Congress and assigned to the Committee on Mileage. He wasn’t securely in his seat before his opponent, as before, began a campaign to unseat, again citing certain illegalities. Unlike the previous attempt to unseat him, Walls wasn’t as lucky this time and in 1878 his bid for re-nomination failed. But his political journey continued when he won a seat in the state senate, where he resumed his demand for compulsory public education. There were several other unsuccessful attempts to get back in Congress but ultimately he decided to settle into taking charge of the farm at Florida Normal College (now Florida A&M University) until his death on May 15, 1905. Oddly, his obituary wasn’t published in any of the mainstream Florida papers.

DISCUSSION Given the debates and splits that occurred during Reconstruction, Florida’s history provides an expansive example. with undiagnosed dyslexia as a young person, I know how important it is that students are given the tools necessary to overcome roadblocks to learning,” Adams continued. “I plan to make dyslexia screening universal in all our public schools.” Students face more surveillance on the largely Black and Hispanic side of the boundary There’s been plenty of talk in education circles about the school-toprison pipeline, and it seems it’s functioning as designed. Word in Black found that there are 17% more security guards in schools on the Black/Hispanic side of the school zoning boundary. And, on that majority Black/Hispanic side of the boundary, on average, majority-Black schools have about twice the number of security guards than the majority-white schools. And in their series Criminalizing Kids, the Center for Public Integrity found that in 46 states, Black students were referred to law enforcement at higher rates than the national total rate of referrals. Royal says teachers are taught to manage their classrooms and schools in general in “ways that are dehumanizing—that are controlling out of this idea of tough love.” “I always ask when do Black children get to experience love that is gentle?” Royal says. “Love that is tender? Love that is redemptive or compassionate? I think our schools still see not even just Black children—Black families, Black people—as people who need to be controlled and need to be taught how to be instead of just working with us as human beings.” Mental health should not be a privilege—in schools or otherwise Compassion should be coming from school counselors, but they’re a resource that is more common on the boundary with the lower share of Black and Hispanic residents. Though the data does not show significant differences in the presence of school counselors, Toldson says that is misleading and there’s still an “unevenness.” “Students from more affluent backgrounds, a lot of times their parents will pay for counselors outside of the school,” Toldson says. “On the other hand, if you have mostly students whose parents can’t afford counselors, private therapy, or private mental healthcare, then you actually need a higher counselor-to-student ratio at those schools. That’s a case where, when they appear even, that may actually still be a disparity.” The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone’s mental health. Especially Black people, and especially Black children. Unfortunately, Royal says, the conversation surrounding students’ mental health has been “very narrow.” “Not only are the children extra

THE NEW YORK AMSTERDAM NEWS stressed, but the adults who are supposed to be helping them cope with the stress, they’re also extra stressed,” Royal says. “School districts, especially underresourced school districts, are struggling. They’re being reactive and trying to figure out all these competing interests.” Between the immense pressures of trying to keep kids both in school and COVID-free, Royal says mental health gets pushed down on the priority list and is lacking the rich conversation it deserves. “Unfortunately, people are thinking the only thing you need to do for mental health is have them socializing, which is hard in the midst of COVID,” she says. “Our kids are dealing with a lot around: Is this gonna kill me? Is this gonna kill my family? Does my school have the capacity to keep me safe?”

Where are we on desegregating schools? The Urban Institute’s Dividing Lines report features an interactive map to show where school boundaries are drawn and exactly how schools remain segregated. Seemingly arbitrary imaginary lines group Black and Hispanic students together, keeping white students on the other side. Royal covers this topic in her forthcoming book, “Not Paved for Us: Black Educators and Public School Reform in Philadelphia.” While she is not opposed to school desegregation, Royal doesn’t think it’s the only solution to ensuring Black children receive an excellent education. “Why aren’t Black children in their own schools worthy of these resources?” Royal asks. School desegregation, Royal explains, was a way of selling schools and neighborhoods that were considered “undesirable to white people.” “School desegregation became something where our needs weren’t necessarily centered,” Royal says. “It was like, ‘We need to sell it to white people. We have to somehow make the Black students palatable for them, but also present Black students as a learning opportunity,’ which then is not fair to Black students.” Dr. Royal’s insight makes sense to Toldson, a parent, who says he doesn’t believe “simply being around white students is good enough for them to get the kind of education that they need.” However, he says having a segregated environment is a “dangerous proposition,” especially with income disparities. “In this country,” Toldson says, “it always leads to disparate outcomes.” Mayor Adams knows some dominoes will fall based on another one’s fall. He likes the city and Albany collaborating to help young New Yorkers. “The futures of New York City and New York State are intertwined, and we must work together to ensure progress and prosperity,” testified Adams. “But our mutual recovery will be difficult if revenue streams are cut off from the city and drastic cuts from previous years are not restored.”

given the short time frame for the special election, it’s not surprising that many people aren’t aware of the candidates or getting out the vote. The short turnaround time for the special election, since it was announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Jan. 6, feels even more sped up considering right after the special election is over the winner will have to begin campaigning again for the primary in June and then the general election in November. He said it would be a great benefit for working parents. On education in general, Alleyne wants to allocate space to fully fund schools and bridge the technology gap for students. He suggested free portable hotspots for students that don’t have access to wifi or stable housing that has internet. Alleyne said the other pressing issues facing the district include affordable housing, adequate health care for all, transportation equity, policing reform, and climate change. Early voting for the special election began this past Saturday, but voting caps on Election Day next Tuesday, Feb. 15. From there, the elected assembly member goes on to fight to keep the seat in the June primary and then again in November’s gen-

His grandfather became a steward of community gardens on the block. A tradition Alleyne has continued and led to his initiatives to provide more fresh food access across the district. “Growing up in the East, I grew up with a lot of family,” said Alleyne. “My family came to this country from Trinidad. We basically all lived in the same house.” Part of his upbringing in the community, said Alleyne, was riddled with ‘stop and frisk’ police harassment. He said whether it was walking through the playground or coming back from a fast food place, there was always an interaction with police. Because of his experiences, he wants to prioritize state funding for local cure violence organizations and address the

Health Take charge of risk factors affecting your heart health Cholesterol—a waxy substance created by the liver or consumed from meat, poultry and dairy products— isn’t inherently “bad” for you. In fact, your body needs it to build cells and make vitamins and other hormones. However, too much “bad” LDL cholesterol, or not enough “good” HDL cholesterol, can pose problems. High cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Because it typically has no symptoms, you may not know you have high cholesterol until it’s already causing problems. Knowing key health numbers such as your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, and working closely with your doctor to manage them, are keys to preventing heart disease and stroke. Those who have already experienced a heart attack or stroke or have family history of cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammatory disease or kidney disease may need to have their cholesterol and other risk factors checked more often and may need medication to manage their conditions to prevent another event. According to the American Heart Association, as many as 1 in 4 survivors will have another heart attack or stroke.

Along with taking your medication as prescribed, some lifestyle habits can help manage your risk and help you live a longer, healthier life like watching what you eat, getting more exercise and managing stress. Make healthy menu choices A healthy eating plan is a well-rounded diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables (at least 4-5 servings each day). In fact, researchers at the University of Columbia found each daily serving of fruits or vegetables was associated with a 4% lower risk of coronary heart disease and a 5% lower risk of stroke. Other smart choices for your menu include nuts and seeds, whole grains, lean proteins and fish. Limit sweets, sugarsweetened beverages, saturated fat, trans fat, sodium and fatty or processed meats.

physical activity offers numerous benefits to improve health, including a lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression. The greatest impacts come from getting the recommended amount of activity: at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity or a combination of those activities per week. Be sure to discuss with your doctor which activities may be best for you. If you’re having trouble getting motivated, small steps like walking your dog can lead to big changes over time. A scientific statement from the American Heart Association on pets and hearthealth showed dog parents are more likely to reach their fitness goals than those without canine companions.

Aside from the direct toll on your body—including elevated risk for heart disease and stroke from high blood pressure, depression or anxiety—stress can lead to unhealthy habits like overeating, physical inactivity and smoking. Exercise is an effective way to keep your body healthy and release stress. You might also consider incorporating meditation and mindfulness practices into your day to allow yourself a few minutes to distance yourself from daily stress. Research compiled by the American Heart Association suggests meditation can reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, support the immune system and increase your ability to process information. Another powerful tool to fight depression, anxiety and poor sleep, according to researchers at the University of California-San Diego, is practicing gratitude or thankfulness. Start by simply writing down three things you’re grateful for each day. Learn more about managing your cholesterol and habits to protect your heart health at heart.org/cholesterol.

Get moving You likely know exercise is good for you, but an Oxford University study revealed simply swapping 30 minutes of sitting with low-intensity physical activity can reduce your risk of death by 17%. Mortality aside, in its Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services noted

Reduce stress Constant or chronic stress can have real consequences on both emotional and physical health. In fact, research shows chronic stressors such as long work hours, financial stress and work-life conflict may be as risky for health as secondhand smoke, according to a report by the Behavior Science and Policy Association. Religion & Spirituality Cliff Frazier, a man for all seasons and a life of purpose In a life that was as inexhaustible as it was purposeful, it’s not easy to label Cliff Frazier. Through his commitment to a sundry of organizations and institutions, he touched a multitude and inspired countless number of aspirants in the world of business, community and humanitarian service, and the arts. Cliff, a veritable renaissance man, made his transition on Feb. 3. He was 87. Cliff was born Aug. 27, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan to Larney Frazier and Willa Mae Revely; and much later attended Wayne State University. Earlier in his life, as an actor, he appeared in numerous theatrical and television productions. His legendary performance in Samuel Beckett’s “Krapp’s Last Tape” was reviewed by one of USA’s most influential Broadway director and drama critics, Harold Clurman, with the following comment: “Frazier’s performance was masterful. He is one of the finest actors in the United States.” “Although Cliff and my life in art was well connected…,” said Woodie King, Jr. of New Federal Theater, recounting their early years together in Detroit in which they performed separately to rave reviews in a trio of plays “Study in Color” by the late Rev. Malcolm Boyd. Later, after this success they embarked for New York City in 1965. “He was cautious about leaving…he wanted to teach and train young people.” Upon arrival in New York, Cliff landed the lead

role in “Lorenzaccio” by Alfred De Musset, King continued. “It was a big hit and I was able to secure a job with the help of Robert Hooks at Mobilization for Youth. Cliff ran the training program for young people of color in acting and theater arts. “Cliff was always looking ahead,” King added. “He hooked up with Voza Rivers and Ademola Olugebefola to start the Dwyer Culture Center in Harlem. We kept up a long and productive friendship and he served as chairman of the New Federal Theatre’s board of directors for 15 years, during which the NFT honored Ossie Davis and Sidney Poitier.” In 1968 after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, Cliff left his acting career and dedicated himself to the fulfillment of Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community” free of the evils of racism, poverty, and violence. He created programs and activities specifically aimed at fulfilling this vision. Cliff lived a life devoted to the “Beloved Community.” During the ’60s, ’70s and

’80s, alongside Ossie Davis who was the driving force, Cliff helped change the face of the media industry. Through organizations like Community Film Workshop Council (CFWC), Third World Cinema (TWC) and the Institute of New Cinema Artists (INCA), they were responsible for training and obtaining opportunities of employment for over 2000 Black, Latinos, Asians and individuals from low income communities throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, in the film, television, recording, advertising and allied media industries. In 1983 he won an Emmy for “To Be A Man” along with one of the alumni’s of CFWC, TWC and INCA, who’s an industry trailblazer––Neema Barnette, a producer/director, the first African American woman to direct a television situation comedy and who has directed numerous television shows and feature films. In 1986, he founded International Communications Association (ICA), a Harlem-based nonprofit organization, to continue the successful work of CFWC, TWC and INCA. In 1992, Cliff, as ICA president, obtained the Dwyer Warehouse. In 1998 ICA, partnered with Cross Construction. The result is the10-story, 51-unit Dwyer Condominiums and The Dwyer Cultural Center, and a 7,000 square feet of community space, located on the lower level, which is owned and managed by ICA. Located in Harlem, the Dwyer Condos and the Dwyer Center, replaced the former 9-story Dwyer Warehouse but the design recalls the original building’s facade. In 1995, Cliff was appointed executive director of New York Metropolitan Martin

Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolence (NYMLK), which utilizes the Kingian principles, philosophy and methodologies to positively impact the problems of social justice. In collaboration with the Morrisania Revitalization Corporation, NYMLK provides social advocacy work and institutes educational, job training and employment programs that sustain community development and further the cause for peace, progress, and nonviolence. NYMLK partnered with SUNY’S Advanced Technology Training and Information Networking (ATTAIN) in establishing a state-of-theart high tech computer laboratory to provide digital parity for communities in the South Bronx that have had limited access to computer technology. For the past 17 years, NYMLK has organized and lead its Annual Interfaith Celebration for Religious and Racial Harmony. This brings together Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and other faiths. In 2001, NYMLK become a non-government organization associated with the United Nations. In 2000, he co-founded the Harriet Tubman Charter School in the Bronx, along with NYMLK and the African American Legal Defense and Education Fund. It was the first charter school awarded by the NewYork State Board of Regents. Cliff was predeceased by his wife Lee, survived by daughter Aliya (Joey), sons Marcus and Tariq (Jocelyn) and grandchildren Oliver, Isabella and Roxanne. His funeral will be on Feb. 19, at Abyssinian Baptist Church. Contact the church for the schedule.

Celebrating the life of Atiim Ferguson By MAL’AKIY 17 ALLAH Special to the AmNews Memorial services for community activist Brother Atiim, aka Earl Lyn Ferguson Jr., were conducted Friday afternoon, Feb. 4 at Brooklyn’s Lawrence Woodward Funeral Home (1 Troy Ave.), moderated by his nephew and pastor, the Rev. Father Caleb Buchannan. Drummers set the tone prior to Sister Santina Payton conducting an “African ancestral libation ritual.” She opened by quoting the legendary Last Poets, “Blessed are those who struggle, oppression is worse than the grave, it’s better to die for a noble cause than to live as a slave,” prior to explaining the purpose of libations. “A soldier doesn’t die, when they leave here, they begin a new task. Every level demands a new you,” she urged before thanking “his biological family

for sharing him with us.” Born at Harlem’s Sister of Cabrini Hospital March 2, 1947, he transitioned January 17, 2022. Rasheem Allah, who traces their history back to the 1980s, acknowledged Atiim’s wife of 54 years, Tiombe, and children before stating: “I learned so much from my elders throughout the years and I knew that eventually I would be doing what they did. It’s just that it’s so sudden.” Some speakers noted how Atiim, along with Sonny Abubadika Carson and Ali Lamont Jr., utilized their Committee To Honor Black Heroes office at Brooklyn’s Restoration Plaza to help provide fatherly wisdom for them when they were youths. “For Brooklyn, we lost a major piece,” Brother Kwaku said. “If you look around in this room, we are family, and Atiim touched each one of us. He was

a superhero. The work continues. He helped a lot of people throughout the years. Brooklyn’s gonna miss you. The youths knew they had somebody protecting them.” December 12th Movement’s first lady, Viola Plummer stated, “Atiim knew there were no other issues other than, ‘We have to fight to win!’ I know your hearts are broken, but we still have a war to win.” Mitch Pendelton, Bed Stuy Boxing Gym, said, “Atiim was instrumental in making the gym a reality. I don’t have no tears right now because it’s a time for joy. He did his work. He could’ve sold out, but he didn’t, he stayed here with us. In order for Atiim to live on, we must continue doing the work.” Mention was made of Atiim contributed to preserving the African Burial Ground in lower-Manhattan during the 1990s, as well as being instrumental in 1989’s “Day of Outrage”

when more than 5,000 people shut down the Brooklyn Bridge in protest of 16-year-old Atiim Ferguson (Mal'akiy 17 Allah photo) Yusuf Hawkins’ racial murder in Bensonhurst. “He was honorable and did the The Rev. Washington, but it could clear the lane for Malliotakis. “His entrance into the race definitely hurts,” Smikle said. “It hurts Democrats’ chances of taking back the seat by, you know, splitting the vote. And even though I think Max Rose is a great candidate, standing up for Black Lives Matter in many ways cost him his seat.” De Blasio not taking a step back from the public eye before eyeing a political run of any kind is a bad idea in Sheinkopf’s eyes. But he believes that the mayor is addicted to campaigning. “He’s won upset elections [and] keeps winning upset elections,” Sheinkopf said. “And therefore, that makes him an expert at really doing one thing. He does not have much skill at much else. That’s the problem.”

and stated that “a possible shooting tragedy was avoided.” Now, school safety agents are in front of the virtual gun with activists lumping them in with cops. But they themselves don’t carry guns. The COVID-19 pandemic has produced many crises. How City Hall handles the public school system will be a major plus or minus for New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ tenure. Here’s one of those crises. Former mayor Bill de Blasio’s desire to transfer control of school safety agents from the New York City Police Department to the Department of Education starting this year. He eventually backed off due to pressure from entities such as the United Federation of Teachers. The DOE (then known as the Board of Education) originally transferred control of the school safety agents to the NYPD in 1998. However, safety agents don’t carry guns. According to Teamsters Local 237, currently, there are approximately 2,000 fewer School Safety Agents than in recent years. The primary reason for this shortage, according to union officials, is due to the “previous group of NYC Council Members determining that as part of the ‘defund the police’ sentiments sweeping the

nation, they would cancel the class of SSA trainees”—and advocated replacing them with social workers and guidance counselors. “There were a number of school safety agents that retired,” said Floyd. Floyd pointed out a recent incident at Susan Wagner High School in Staten Island where a student was pistol-whipped and said that this is the reason that school safety agents are needed. But there are some blurred lines. School safety agents don’t carry guns. What could’ve been prevented? While the safety agents train with the New York City Police Department, they stop the minute guns come into the picture, a spokesperson said. According to police statistics, there are 17,519 civilian service members (MOS) in their ranks. As of Jan. 5, 48.4% of MOS’s are Black. Among School Safety Agents, going by rank and title, 71.23% are women. Among all women SSA’s, 69.97% of them are Black. But agents have been trapped between their work and the so-called “defund the police” movement that ratcheted up since the death of George Floyd in 2020. Davids wants school safety agents back where they belong. She said that the lack of school safety agents is a “disaster waiting to happen.” “General criminal behavior spills over into the schools,” Davids said. But she also said that school safety agents are no different from traf-

fic guards. New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said that there can be a balance of both issues: creating a safe environment while working on the issues at hand. “There are a variety of paths the Department of Education should pursue to transition away from policing-based infrastructure in our public schools,” said Williams, in an emailed statement. “We must address the causes of violence in schools at their root through healing and community-centered schools with the right balance of prevention and accountability.” Last year, Williams said during a city council hearing on public safety that “the NYPD currently assigns over 5,000 School Safety Agents and almost 200 uniformed NYPD Officers to New York City schools who are empowered to detain, arrest, and issue court summonses to students and are often the first point of contact when there is an issue.” He said that these actions help conduct a school-to-prison pipeline. This year, Williams put the gloves back on for school safety agents. “As always, the public advocate is committed to dialogue about how best to achieve this, and maintains School Safety Agents, who are predominantly Black and Brown women who care about our city’s children, must be respected and reflected in any just transition, with a

model that protects the employment of thousands of New Yorkers.” The AmNews contacted a principal to speak on this matter. They agreed but reneged on the interview after speaking with their superintendent. Davids directed the AmNews to Quiann Simpkins, a school safety agent from East Flatbush. Simpkins, who works at a Coney Island school, wished people displayed more nuance when it came to the concept of law enforcement handing over the safety agents’ reins to the Department of Education after being swept up by ‘defund the police.’ “Most of our job description and details are geared toward children and those communities with respect,” said Simpkins. “You see the stories all around the country of officers getting aggressive with children. We don’t carry guns. We’re here to literally protect the kids and maybe act like a surrogate mother or father… more mother. “The things that we do are to keep that school building, those school perimeters, those school grounds safe,” she continued. “That’s what our job is. To protect it, to keep it safe, and to make sure that that instruction is being able to be given, you know, freely and peacefully without anybody negatively impacting upon the educational process. We don’t criminalize children.” See SCHOOL on page 29

But every now and then, school safety agents would align with the ones with the guns. Late last year, a student was stabbed at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom School in the Bronx. Only two school safety agents were on duty at the time. School Safety, along with the cops, increased security at Fannie Lou and brought in portable scanning equipment. The DOE praised school safety agents as vital to the community. “School safety is the responsibility of every member of the community, and School Safety Agents are a crucial part of why our schools are safe,” said DOE spokesperson Nathaniel Styer. “From providing a friendly greeting at the school entrance to providing safe space for young people to learn, SSAs have a special role in so many of our school communities.” During an early January visit to Concourse Village Elementary School, de Blasio praised safety agents—along with others—for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m so proud to stand here today, shoulder-toshoulder with not only Mayor Adams, but every single educator, school leader, social worker, guidance counselor, food service employee, custodian, and school safety agents who come to school every day to serve our children, and we want to thank them very, very much,” said de Blasio. “With school safety agents, their engagements don’t just end during school hours,” said Davids. “They participate in a ton of programs, join coat drives, give kids money for lunch if they don’t have any. These Black and Brown women are a critical part of our school community.” Simpkins wanted the public to know that school safety agents aren’t the enemy. “We don’t police the streets. We don’t police random citizens.”

The Knicks continue to pursue balance and chemistry amid inconsistency

By JAIME C. HARRIS AmNews Sports Editor

The Knicks reached the halfway point of their regular season schedule on Tuesday night with a 111-96 win over the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. They were 20-21 when the 22-18 Dallas Mavericks visited the Garden last night, sitting 11th in the tightly contested Eastern Conference standings. The Mavericks were without former Knick All-Star Kristaps Porzingis, who was in COVID19 health and safety protocols. Comparatively, the Knicks, one game under .500 before facing the Mavericks, were 18-17 after 35 games a season ago with a similar winning percentage of .514 when the league held an abridged 71-game

(Bill Moore photo)

Knicks forward Obi Toppin’s playing time has been inconsistent as head coach Tom Thibodeau endeavors to build productive chemistry in his lineup

regular season. The stark difference is they were fourth in the conference at that time and went on to finish as the No. 4 seed with a record of 41-31. The landscape has changed as teams such as the Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers, who ended last season 10th, 11th , 12th and 13th respectively in the East are much improved. The Bulls led the conference at 27-11 prior to hosting the Nets last night, the Cavaliers (2318) were 6th, the Hornets 7th (22-19) and the Raptors 8th (20-18). All of them have the necessities and staying power to be contenders for one of the 10 post-regular season spots with the 7 through 10 seeds designated for the Play-In Tournament. So, unlike the charmed run the Knicks experienced in the secondhalf of their schedule last season when they went 23-13, their remaining 40 games over the next three months will undoubtedly be an intense and hardfought grind. They have

labored to develop productive and sustained consistency that is reflected in their 10-11 home record heading into the matchup with the Mavericks. COVID-19 and injuries have affected them as they have all 30 NBA teams. “Look, there’s going to be ups and downs throughout the course of the year,” said Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau after Saturday’s 99-75 loss to the Boston Celtics on the road. “You’ve got to be mentally tough when you face adversity— everybody does. Probably the most important thing in life. Sometimes it goes our way, sometimes it doesn’t. Just navigate through it all.” Thibodeau has moved players in and out of the lineup trying to achieve offensive-defensive equilibrium. The result has been players, notably second-year forward Obi Toppin, still trying to solidify their roles in the rotation. Toppin went into the Mavericks game seeing his minutes reduced in recent weeks. For the season, he was 11th on the team in average minutes played per game at 16.3. Toppin’s stat line was 8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. The Knicks will be in Atlanta on Saturday to face the Hawks, then return to the Garden for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day game on Monday, and be back on the court at MSG on Tuesday versus the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Facing injuries and the trade deadline, the Nets can’t panic now

Dealing with Kevin Durant (MCL), James Harden (hamstring), Joe Harris (hamstring) and LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle), the part-time play of Kyrie Irving, and nearly 30 different starting lineups, the Brooklyn Nets are struggling. Today is the NBA’s trade deadline and as of the time this story went to press, the Nets had not made any major moves. The Nets were 29-24, 7th in the Eastern Conference, when they hosted the Nets general manager Sean Marks and head coach Steve Nash may move on with no Boston Celtics at the Barchanges to the team’s roster before today’s NBA trade deadline clays Center on Tuesday. He wants to be here,” said Nets head coach Steve Nash before his team suffered a 124-104 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday. “He wants to be here long-term as well, so I don’t think anything’s changed other than noise from the outside.” Nash said the Nets are going to remain focused and steady as they manage adversity. “We’re not going to panic. There’s still plenty of games after the All-Star break when Kevin is back,” he made clear. “The common thread is not having everyone, major and us finding ways to get better,” said Nets veteran guard Patty Mills, who won a championship in 2014 while playing with the San Antonio Spurs. “It has been tough, but no excuses,” Mills added. “We’ve got to hang our hat on our ability to rely on each other.” The Nets are back on the road tonight to take on the Washington Wizards and Saturday to meet up with the Miami Heat and return to Brooklyn on Monday to play the Sacramento Kings. Columbia’s Kaitlyn Davis is garnering accolades By LOIS ELFMAN Special to the AmNews

(Photo courtesy of Bryce Todd/Columbia Athletics)

As Columbia University’s women’s basketball team is having an incredible season with its best-ever start in Ivy League Conference play, junior guard/forward Kaitlyn Davis has been a standout. She received back-to-back Player of the Week honors from both the Ivy League and the Met Basketball Writers Association. She has started in all 20 games this season and is averaging 13.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. “I think Kaitlyn is the star in our league, and I think her stats are proving it,” said Columbia head coach Megan Griffith. “The way she affects the game in so many ways is very impressive. There’s nobody else doing that in our league. I’m really proud of her. The things that she said she wanted to accomplish as a Lion two years ago, she’s doing that. And she’s still not a finished product.” It’s not even that Davis is a traditional sophomore. She is, in fact, a junior psychology major at Columbia College. Columbia, like all schools in the

Ivy League, sat Kaitlyn Davis is having a stellar season out the entire 2020-’21 season due to the pandemic. That means after Davis’ outstanding freshman season, she didn’t play another collegiate game for 20 months. “Over the quarantine, I was able to live with my teammates and we all pushed each other every day as we were working on our skills and working on getting better,” said Davis. “This petition felt great. wasn’t an immediate gratification thing,” said Davis, who plans to pursue an MBA in the future. Columbia is currently 16–4 overall and 7–1 in conference play. The team travels to Davis’ home state of Connecticut on Saturday to take on Yale.

Big moves happening in women’s pro hoops Tina Charles will play with the Phoenix Mercury for the 2022 WNBA season

In one of the busiest free agency seasons in WNBA history, there have been more moves and shuffles. First up, New Yorkers. Queens native Tina Charles will join her Olympic teammates Diana Taurasi, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Brittney Griner on the Phoenix Mercury roster. While one New Yorker comes, another departs. The Mercury traded Long Islander Bria Hartley to the Indiana Fever. Rumors of Olympic gold medalist and 2021 WNBA Champion Stefanie Dolson signing with the New York Liberty proved accurate. It was announced on Feb. 3 that she would return to her home state—although calling her a local is a bit of a stretch as she grew up more than 80 miles from Brooklyn. The Liberty also announced that it waived guard Jazmine Jones and forward Le-

aonna Odom, both of whom played two seasons with the team. Another huge announcement is that the WNBA has accomplished the largest-ever capital raise for a women’s sports property, $75 million. The investors include current WNBA and NBA owners, among them Joe and Clara Tsai, owners of

consumer touchpoints, digital innovation and introducing the WNBA into consumer spaces, such as fashion and culture. Obviously, a significant goal is to increase the WNBA’s fanbase. Engelbert said, “Whenever you are thinking about your fanbase, you have to determine and define with data who they are today…and how do we bring them into an arena and how do we make sure they’re watching us on TV?” These are issues that should have been examined 20 years ago. After an initial excitement around the league’s launch, the fanbase waned and there was little reflection on why or how to continuously bring in new fans. While we appreciate and applaud this fantastic new investment and have huge hopes for the future, it would be nice to see honest reflection on missteps and outright bad decisions. It seems reasonable to expect that the past can be addressed while the brilliant future unfolds.

some of the league’s obstacles to growth. “We definitely take a huge step forward,” said Engelbert, who said people cannot expect a change overnight. Rather, this is an investment that will unfold over the next three to five years. She said funds could now go into enhanced player marketing, elevation of fan and

The Rams’ defensive front and the Bengals’ offensive line will be the game’s most consequential battle. A lack of Black head coaches is a main storyline of Sunday’s Super Bowl Super Bowl LVI (56) on Sunday between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams will continue to prove that the annual NFL event is America’s biggest game. This will be the first time that the Bengals, the underdog, and the Rams, will meet this season, so there is no head-to-head matchup to reference. There are many storylines including the Bengals’ 25-year-old quarterback Joe Burrow rising to become one of the best players in the league in only his second season and the Rams’ 35-year-old QB Matthew Stafford finally getting his opportunity on the sport’s biggest stage after years playing for the lowly Detroit Lions. But a major story the NFL wants to stay out of the center of Super Bowl discussions is the federal lawsuit filed last week by recently fired Miami Dolphins Afro Latino head coach Brian Flores against the NFL and three of its teams—the Dolphins, New York Giants and Denver Broncos—alleging racial discrimination. “We didn’t have to file a lawsuit for the world to know there’s a problem from the hiring standpoint with regard to minority coaches,” Flores said in an interview with “CBS Mornings” last week. “The numbers speak for themselves. We filed a lawsuit so that we could create some change. And that’s important to me. I think we’re at a fork in the road right now. We’re
