LIFE IN wales 1

There are three canteen servers in our school. Their names are Julie, Sue and Amanda.

Listen and read.

Hi, I’m Ricky. I’m in class 5 at Riverbank School, in Cardiff. Today’s blog is about our canteen servers!

There is a chef, too – her name’s Claire. She decides what we eat. Claire works every day from seven o’clock in the morning to two o’clock in the afternoon. The canteen servers work from ten o’clock to two o’clock. They work very hard, there are 300 boys and girls in our school and everybody has lunch at school. In the morning the canteen servers help the chef in the school kitchen and they prepare the food. At about twelve o’clock they prepare the school canteen.

Every day we eat different food: soup, pasta, rice, meat, fish, vegetables and salad. We never eat burgers, hot dogs or chips at school. I don’t like fast food. It’s not good for you! 32

Off to Work!

We always have a dessert: fruit salad and ice-cream, cake or a yogurt. My favourite dessert is the chocolate mousse: it’s delicious and chef Claire makes it every Friday!

At our school there is also a breakfast club. It starts at 8 o’clock. Some children have breakfast at school because their parents go to work very early. They can have toast, cereal and milk and a glass of orange juice.

2

Bye! Ricky

A Hard Job 1

26

Listen and read.

Hi, I’m Jamie and this is a photo of my mum. She’s an astronaut. It’s a very special job and it’s very interesting, too!

When my mum is in space she always wakes up very early, at about five o’clock and she has a shower with a special shampoo and a little water. In space, astronauts can’t use a lot of water! Then she has breakfast. Breakfast is very important. She has three meals a day and snacks. Exercise is very important in space, too. My mum does two hours every day. She does weights or she uses a bike. Then, my mum and the other astronauts work on scientific experiments until lunchtime. 38

Sometimes she has a snack, like fruit or cakes for lunch. They are easy to eat. Food like spaghetti or rice are difficult to cook! Then she works again in the afternoon until about eight o’clock in the evening. After dinner, my mum often calls me and we video chat or she reads a book. At the weekend, astronauts don’t work. They play games or cards, listen to music or watch films.

It’s important to sleep well. My mum sleeps eight hours a night. Astronauts don’t sleep in beds like you and I. They sleep in sleeping bags in a cabin.

I think it’s a fantastic job. When I grow up, I want to be an astronaut!

A YARD SALE 1

37

Listen and read. We collect clothes, shoes, toys, bicycles, scooters, video games, books… We price the items and then we sell them. We donate the money to our favourite charity. This year we want to donate the money to poor children.

Hi, I’m Rebecca and I’m in class 6 at Winton primary School in London. Every year in spring we have a yard sale at my school. If the weather is good, the sale is in the school playground. If it's cold or rainy, we have it in the school gym.

50

We always prepare posters about the yard sale. We write the day, the time and the place of the sale. Then we put the posters in the shops in our town.

Let’s Go Shopping

Two weeks before the yard sale we start to collect the things we want to sell and we take them to the school gym. The day before the sale we prepare the tables. We put all the items on the tables with their prices.

3

On the day of the sale people come and buy the items. Our parents usually make cakes and biscuits. They can also buy cold drinks, tea and coffee from the school café. I usually make chocolate cupcakes and my mum makes biscuits! Do you have yard sales in your country?

Bye! rebecca

2 Answer the questions. 1 Where do the kids have the yard sale if the weather is good? 2 What do the kids usually collect? 3 What do the kids write on the posters? 4 Where do they put the posters? 5 What do they do the day before the sale? 6 What does Rebecca usually make for the sale?

Charities in New Zealand 1

40

Listen and read.

Hi! My name’s Micah, I live in Auckland, New Zealand. Today I want to tell you about two very important charities in my city: KidsCan and Koru Care.

KidsCan helps poor children who haven’t got food or clothes. My class often organises events to help them. We donate the money and the children can buy food and medicines. Sometimes we also donate clothes and toys.

Every month we organise an event for KidsCan. This month we are organising a book fair. People from our town bring their old books to our school and we sell them at the fair. The money goes to KidsCan.

56

We are organising a karaoke evening, too. It’s awesome! The singers pay 5 dollars to sing. I can’t sing very well but I always sing at these events!

The second charity is Koru Care. It helps children who are ill or who have disabilities. Koru Care organises holidays for these children and their parents. They organise Christmas parties and picnics, too! Our school donates money to Koru Care and we also buy products on an online shop called Mighty Ape. On this shopping site our families and friends can buy video games, books, toys, clothes and lots of the money we spend goes to Koru Care! I think it’s very important to help people, and it can be fun, too.

THE THREE RS! 1

49

Listen and read.

In my school this week is Waste Reduction Week and we are doing a lot of projects!

We are working in three groups. I’m in the first group and we are making a spoon lamp with a plastic bottle and plastic spoons. It’s really easy and fun to make! Here’s a photo of the lamp.

66

Hi everybody, my name’s Amanda. I live in Aberdeen, Scotland. My school is Broomhill Primary School. Today’s blog is about recycling! It’s very important to remember the three Rs if we want to protect our planet: Reduce Reuse Recycle! Reduce: the number of things you buy. Reuse: use the same things lots of times. Recycle: find new ways to use old things.

The second group is making piggy banks. A piggy bank is where you put your pocket money. The kids in this group are recycling old, plastic bottles and they are using paper for the ears. Then they are painting them. They’re really cool! Here’s a photo!

The third group is making a pencil holder. We have all got a lot of old buttons at home and this is a fantastic way to recycle them. The kids are gluing the buttons on an old tomato can! The result is a fantastic pen holder!

Look at this photo!

At parties we receive colourful crackers. Inside the crackers there is always a small gift.

Hi, I’m Maria, I live in London. When I’m not at school, I love visiting museums in my town. The best museums for me are: the Natural History Museum, the British Museum and the London Transport Museum.

The Natural History Museum is really cool! It’s fantastic for children… and adults too! I go there with my family every year because I love it. It is open every day from 10.00 to 18.00 and it's free. We usually spend two hours there. In the museum there is a model of a blue whale. It’s enormous! There is a model of a T-rex and lots of games to play too!

90

The British Museum is amazing! It’s free for children and adults. I love history and in the museum I can see lots of interesting things like the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian mummies and mummified animals. The museum also organises treasure hunts for children.

The Transport Museum is magical! It’s in Covent Garden and it's free for children. There are more than 80 vehicles, including a red London bus and the world’s first Tube train! You can drive a bus, a Victorian train, be a captain on a boat and sit on an old tram! In the museum there is a play zone for children under 6. My little brother loves it!

Listen and read.

May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on first May every year. It is a traditional spring holiday in many cultures. It is celebrated at the time of the year when the weather is warm and flowers and trees start to blossom. The origins of May Day are in the Roman festival of Flora, the goddess of flowers. Originally the festival was on 27th April.

A traditional dance is Maypole dancing. People dance around a maypole which is decorated with ribbons and flowers. The maypole is usually in a central place like the village square. Children wear colourful costumes and dance around the pole, holding ribbons.

Another traditional dance is Morris dancing. Men and women wear old-fashioned clothes and dance in the streets of towns and villages. The women wear long skirts. The men have bells on their knees and they carry short, black sticks.

There is also a May Queen. She is the replica of Flora. She usually wears a dress and a crown with flowers. She begins the May Day celebrations. She chooses her king, the Green Man and they walk together in the parade.
