Are you and your generation satisfied with what you’ve achieved*?
Mum, can you come and get me?
What’s in the box, Jeremy?
Kids of my age will do great things!
Well, certainly your generation would achieve more…
Hang on… it doesn’t matter. Pierce says that maybe his dad can come.
I’ve bought a new pair of shoes.
Hey! There are still 20 minutes left on this parking meter!
Can I see them?
Let’s be quick in the music shop.
achieved: reached, obtained hang on: wait a moment reminds: makes me remember
If some of you managed to get up before midday sometimes!
Dude, move! You’re right in front of the TV, I can’t see anything!
Of course.
But why are you always so critical?
So, can you come and pick me up?
Hang on*, I’ll go and get the other pair, there are two of them.
Dad, it’s great fun going shopping with you!
That reminds me*, also the drug store’s bill has doubled this month!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve got sweaty palms.

BEFORE WE START r Charles Think about the autho u know about Dickens. What do yo t a Christmas him? And what abou the book Carol? Have you read or seen the film?
The story is based around the main character Ebenezer Scrooge, who is a mean* and unkind man. On Christmas Eve he’s visited by the ghost of his ex-partner who warns* him that he will be visited by other sprits during the night. The first one is the ghost of Christmas past, who takes him back to his childhood and reminds him how different he was as a child. The next ghost to visit him is the ghost of Christmas present and takes Scrooge to visit various scenes from his present life. Finally, he’s visited by the ghost of Christmas yet to come who shows him what life will be like if he doesn’t change his ways. Scrooge wakes up on Christmas morning a changed man. He’s generous and kind and helps the poor people who work for him.
The writing of the book Charles Dickens completed the book in just six weeks and it was published just in time for Christmas in 1843. Dickens had argued* with his publisher, so decided to pay for the book to be published himself. Although it was a very successful book and sold 6,000 copies in the first few days, Dickens didn’t make
a lot of money from the book as he had spent so much money having it published. However, this wasn’t a problem for him as he was very happy to have written a book about his favourite holiday period.
Important themes An important theme that reappears in many of Dickens’s books is poverty, especially poverty concerning children. Many of the protagonists of his books are children who suffer from hardship* and child labour*. The family of Scrooge’s employee Bob Cratchit play an important role in a Christmas Carol, especially their disabled son. And they are some of the first people to gain from Scrooge’s transformation as he gives them a huge* turkey and other treats* to eat on Christmas day. It is said that the Cratchit family is based on Dickens’s childhood as he lived in poverty too.
The big screen Due to* its popularity, many films have been made from the book. Six silent film were made in the early 1900s, with the first speaking film made in 1935. The film which was made in 1938 is the most replayed version. 1944 saw the first TV adaptation. In addition, songs and music have often been added to the adaptation. In 1992, there was the Muppet’s version of a Christmas carol and in 2009 an animated version in 3D was released with the voices of Jim Carrey and Colin Firth. The most popular version for children was Mickey’s Christmas Carol in which Mickey Mouse played the part of Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s employee*.

Long live my clothes The latest fashion trends are concerned with style but also global wellbeing*. Let’s find out more.
More and more clothes Research carried out in England claims that in the last ten years the amount of clothes bought has doubled. So why can’t we find what we want when we open our wardrobes?
Clothes - the cause of global warming Don’t shrug your shoulders* - it isn’t as incredible as it seems. Millions of clothes are thrown away every year and the material (wool for example) produces methane gas when it decomposes. These gases contribute to global warming. Therefore, buy clothes … But don’t throw them away immediately!
Eco-chic Ecological fashion has become the protagonist* of the catwalks in Milan, New York and Paris. Some names? Giorgio Armani, of course, but not only. The English fashion designer, Stella McCartney, daughter of the ex Beatles, says about her eco-boutique “We don’t spoil* the environment
or natural beauty to make our clothes! We don’t kill animals for no reason!”. Many designers are involved in recycling, creating successful clothes and accessories. On page14 you can discover some really special items.
Second-hand but not worn out! Who says that a chic dress can’t remain chic forever? According to Stella McCartney the most beautiful clothes in her wardrobe are vintage (second hand designer clothes from the past)! Swapping* vintage clothes has become fashionable all over the world. Swapping vintage takes place in a flat, among friends (recently Kate Moss at a swap party took a beautiful Dior dress off Angelina Jolie) or in special swap shops. And if we are interested in the more recent past, we can go hunting* for clothes and accessories in the hundreds of second-hand shops and markets!
Did you know that… The very fashionable word vintage, derives from an ancient French word (vendenge) which in turn comes from the Latin word vindemia (= vintage wine).

The home of Shakespeare Today we start our journey in the county of Warwickshire, where we can find the town of Stratford-upon-Avon known the world over for the famous writer and poet William Shakespeare. Here, you can visit Shakespeare’s family home as well as the church where he was baptised and is buried. If you’d like to see some of Shakespeare’s plays while you’re there, why not go to the Royal Shakespeare theatre. Stratford is located on the river Avon, so if you like boats you could go on a river cruise.
The home of the motor car Our next stop is the city of Coventry situated in the county of West Midlands. It’s famous for the car industry and in the past over 100 different car companies have produced cars there, such as Rover and Jaguar. The famous landmark of Coventry is its modern cathedral, which was bombed during the second World War and rebuilt after the war. There’s a particular story about Coventry
that concerns a certain Lady Godiva who people say rode through the city naked* on a horse as a protest against the high taxes intoduced by her husband. According to legend, the local people were ordered not to look at her as she rode past, but one man looked and immediately became blind*. He was called Peeping Tom. This expression has entered the English language and means a person who takes a look where he shouldn’t.
All the fun of the fair If you fancy some fun and excitement, then go to Alton Towers. It’s a very popular theme park situated in central England, in the county of Staffordshire. It has lots of important attractions such as Europe’s first inverted roller coaster, the world’s first vertical drop roller coaster, the world’s first flying roller coaster, and the world ’s first vertical free fall drop roller coaster, but don’t go on them if you’re afraid of heights! If you’re feeling tired after going on all the rides, you can take a cable car to get from one area of the theme park to another.
The home of Robin Hood Our next stop for today is Sherwood forest in the county of Nottinghamshire. It’s associated with the legend of Robin Hood and you can also see the huge oak tree where Robin is said to have hidden. If you go there in the summer, you might be able to visit the Robin Hood festival, which recreates a medieval atmosphere with jousters*, musicians dressed in medieval clothes, fire eaters and alchemists*. You’ll also be able to meet some of the characters from the Robin Hood story such as Big John, Maid Marion and Friar Tuck. But make sure you don’t get lost in the forest!
Feeling hungry? Our final stop for you today is for all you chocaholics* out there. Cadbury World in Birmingham is the home of Cadbury’s chocolate, one of the world’s biggest chocolate manufacturers. Here you can find out how chocolate is made, learn about the history of chocolate and of course try some samples of the wonderful chocolate made there.
