A Note from
Judith R. Fox Interim Head of School
Welcome to 2019 Disco Ball, one and all! This is a festive and fabulous way to celebrate people and milestones at the same time we greet old friends and welcome newcomers. Let’s dine and dance, as we bid on some amazing auction items and raise vitally needed funds for our favorite cause … the students and teachers at EMS. Our honoree this evening is our beloved Tricia Eickelberg who is retiring after more than two decades of devoted service to our students and their families. The mention of her name inevitably evokes a smile. In addition to being the Early Childhood Director, Tricia is our very favorite bookworm whose commitment to the importance of library visits for our youngest students cannot be overstated. But, did you know she began as a music teacher? Tricia’s many talents are surpassed only by her devotion to those around her. From her attention to detail - just look at the world’s best tended finches outside her office – to her intimate knowledge of every single child in her care, she has earned the trust of our community. She shows the same generosity of spirit to the adults as she does her students, forgiving missteps, encouraging personal development and cherishing our individual contributions to EMS. This event also marks the 15th anniversary of the founding of the middle school. Let us celebrate the accomplishments of the faculty and students at Morrow House as we honor the foresight and courage of those who brought the middle school into being. This year alone, our graduates were accepted to some 34 independent boarding and day schools, public high schools, and parochial secondary schools, including the Bergen Academies, the Hill Schools, and the best that New Jersey and Manhattan have to offer. These institutions now routinely seek our graduates because they can count on our students to be well prepared academically and socially. Not bad for being the little school on the hill! Finally, tonight is the culmination of my year as Interim Head of School. I cherish the time that I’ve shared with the students, parents and faculty, and I thank you for making my year a good one. I look forward to passing the baton to incoming Head of School Maureen Fonseca who can rest assured that she’s joining a warm and welcoming community.
Now, let’s party!

A Letter from
Hanita Walia President of the Board
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, welcome to the 2019 Disco Ball, The Elisabeth Morrow School’s annual auction gala. I’m delighted you can be part of the celebration this evening. Traditionally, this event caps off the academic year, bringing together our entire community in support of our beloved school. This year, we mark the 15th anniversary of the founding of the middle school and highlight some of the achievements of our distinguished faculty. Thanks to the generosity of our families and the leadership of our Trustees, EMS continues to evolve in new and exciting ways. Today’s EMS is stronger and more focused than ever on individualized learning. Our early childhood division encourages children to become passionate learners. In the lower division, teachers understand the importance of attending to students’ social emotional needs, creating a comfort zone where they welcome new academic challenges. Our middle school allows adolescents the time to mature and explore their interests in a safe and encouraging atmosphere. Tonight, we offer our thanks to Tricia Eickelberg, Director of our Early Childhood Program, who will retire in June after two decades of service. Tricia exemplifies the 4 Cs – courtesy, consideration, cooperation and compassion – and, through her personal warmth, demonstrates what it is to be a good person and great teacher! She has touched the lives of a generation of EMS families, and she will be fondly remembered by all. This evening’s celebration would be incomplete without a word or two about our remarkable Interim Head of School, Judy Fox, who will be handing over the reins in July to our incoming Head of School, Maureen Fonseca. It has been my great pleasure to work with Judy who has kept EMS on the straight path during this transition year. She did so with enthusiasm, humor and professionalism. Judy demonstrated time and again the depths of her experience and her profound commitment to teaching. We are a better school thanks to her leadership. To put it simply, EMS is only as good as its faculty, devoted teachers who deserve the best possible resources. Tonight is all about supporting good teaching and providing the money necessary for an exemplary student experience. This is where you come in! I encourage everyone to do your part … bid on an auction item, purchase something from the faculty wish list and make a donation to the Endowment for Faculty. Your generosity is the key to our success!
Thank you again for being with us and enjoy the evening!

Honoree
Tricia Eickelberg Director of Early Childhood Programs
At The Elisabeth Morrow School, we have been fortunate to benefit from more than three decades of association with tonight’s honoree, Tricia Eickelberg. Tricia will retire in June after serving in a variety of important capacities, most notably as Director of the Early Childhood Programs. Tricia came to EMS in 1984 as a teacher in Chilton House. She brought with her previous teaching experience and had been a camp counselor and music instructor. In 1989, when she and husband Bill started their family, Tricia stepped back from full time teaching but kept her ties to EMS through the Summer Explorations program and as a substitute in music. Beginning in 2003, Tricia returned to the classroom again, forming strong bonds with her students and colleagues. Countless alumni remember Mrs. Eickelberg leading sing-alongs and hosting Cocoa Parties, while adults who work with her know her as the school historian, with a keen memory of events during her tenure as well as a deep interest in the lives of the Morrow family and the history of the various nooks and crannies of the charming buildings that comprise our campus. Along with her love of music and history, Tricia Eickelberg loves books. In fact, anyone who has exchanged emails with Tricia is familiar with the quote from Albert Einstein that is attached to her signature: “The only thing you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.” In 2012, she was given the opportunity to manage the Chilton House library, nurturing young students’ budding literacy skills and engaging parent volunteers to come in to read to eager listeners. There’s no one thing that makes Tricia Eickelberg the quintessential early childhood educator and community member. It is, in fact, many things, all of which stem from her love of children, her devotion to her craft and her profound understanding of the role that teachers play in the classroom and with the families of the children in their care. To her colleagues, Tricia is quick with a smile and a word of praise, the first to brainstorm a solution to a thorny problem and also the first to volunteer her help.
Celebrating Tricia’s devotion to EMS is easy but saying goodbye will be hard. We wish her well in her retirement and know that, while she will be missed, her legacy will live on in generations of children who have entered through Chilton House’s doors and found a home here at The Elisabeth Morrow School.
A CELEBRATION OF THE FOUNDING OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL
DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR TRICIA EICKELBERG
Tonight, we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the founding of the EMS middle school. This important milestone followed the construction of Little School in 1937, the acquisition of Morrow House in 1957, the construction of the Gymkhana in 1967, and the dedication of Chilton House in 1972. Extending EMS from pre-school to sixth grade and then, adding the last two grades of middle school, was not a new idea. First proposed in 1974, but deferred because of the energy crisis this idea percolated for nearly two decades and was presented to David Lowry when he became Head of School in 2000.
Robin Goldfischer-Hollander, President of Board at the time, said, “The Trustees envisioned a middle school environment with a strong sense of community and age-appropriate rigor, where students could take on greater communal and study responsibilities, and where they could develop social and emotional competencies. [We sought] a school that would allow these young adults to build safe, supportive relationships and feel a sense of connectedness, while maintaining their sense of autonomy.
“When I arrived at EMS, the independent school environment was changing, and it was becoming awkward for many families to have to find a new school after sixth grade. The natural break for most schools was after eighth grade,” Dr. Lowry said. “Also, older students at EMS were becoming more sophisticated and they were ready for a more demanding curriculum.” With the Cohen Center and the Little School science wing still under construction, in early 2001, the Trustees agreed to a feasibility study to analyze the addition of a middle school. Sadly, the first day of the study interviews with parents, teachers, and students was September 11. Although its findings were delayed, the study included recommendations for staffing and additions to the curriculum that would lay the groundwork for a three-year phase-in of the middle school. The middle school concept had its detractors. Some were concerned that enrolling older students would disadvantage preschool families and change the homey character of the school. However, others saw the advantage of offering a more intimate learning environment for emerging adolescents and the value of giving those students the opportunity to be leaders in the school. The first seventh and eighth graders proved to be exceptionally strong and cohesive as a group. To prepare for the new middle school we expanded the Morrow House library, built a new elevator, added world language instruction and created science labs. To lead this effort, Aaron Cooper was hired as Dean of Students. “I was initially hired to help build the seventh and eighth grade program, coming aboard when the eventual first graduating class was in sixth grade,” says Mr. Cooper. “That first year was filled with committees on every subject - articulating philosophy and considering curriculum; marketing committees determining how best to sell the concept; retention committees aimed at talking with the first classes of families; hiring committees filling positions, and much more.“ Aaron’s partner in the middle school endeavor was Michele Bower. She remembers, “David had the vision, Aaron had the energy, I had experience in teaching middle school history and developing curriculum. David was intent on hiring teachers who had specific experience in their disciplines, as well as advanced degrees. Creating a middle school meant adding electives and integrating disciplines like history and English. Germaine DiPaolo, Morrow House Principal for almost 30 years, was an incredible support throughout.
As a school ending in eighth grade, EMS also needed to place its students in appropriate secondary schools. Mr. Cooper filled this role at first and was succeeded by Ms. Bower. That process, which now includes high school visits, standardized testing, interviews, and applications grew over time and is great preparation for life beyond Morrow House. “Our eighth-graders apply to as many as 60 different secondary schools each year and they are accepted to a majority of them,” says Ms. Bower. “Admissions officers are eager to recruit our students because they bring maturity and a strong sense of community, and they are prepared academically for success.” After David Lowry’s retirement in 2013, Aaron Cooper became Head of School. During his five years as Head, Aaron expanded the middle school program and focused leadership opportunities for our students. Paul Baly replaced Germaine DiPaolo in 2012 and brought a new vision to the EMS middle school. He observes, “EMS truly gets into your blood and becomes a part of who you are forever. Unlike other settings, no child falls through the cracks and we focus on developing students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, a willingness to try new things and respect for their peers.” We are proud to have created a middle school that reflected EMS’s core values: academic excellence, character development, community, diversity and inclusion and a passion for learning. We thank the alumni and parents of the classes of 2006 to 2008 for being pioneers in its development.

Tonight’s DJ
Prince Hakim Bell Influenced by the sound of the 80’s and today, Prince Hakim has traveled from New York to Tokyo sharing his passion, and spreading his message to “Celebrate Life.” In this past year alone, Hakim has DJ’d at a number of events including SXSW, Bonnaroo Music Festival, Art Basel in Miami and some of the hottest clubs in New York such as Sony Hall and La Esquina. Hakim has also DJ’d for the Clinton Foundation, Tory Burch and the Carnegie Hall Notables. On top of that, Hakim toured with “Kool & The Gang” as a featured rapper. In a short span of time, Prince Hakim has created a substantial following and brand for himself. With years of professional music experience under his belt, Bell has much to offer to the industry. His wish is to “Celebrate Life” through music and share his talent with the world. Prince Hakim, son of Kool of “Kool & The Gang”, has grown up around music and funk all his life. Catching the DJ bug at an early age, young Prince Hakim would practice making beats and spinning records with his brother and cousins. As a kid, Hakim would spend summers with music mogul Jermaine Dupri, who DJ’d in his garage, selling tickets for a dollar a pop. Skyrocketing his career with producing and developing talent, Hakim’s résumé contains a long list of accomplishments.
