Dear EMS Community, It continues to be an honor for me to serve with a dedicated group of trustees as president of the board, and in that role, to work in partnership with you – our entire community, including parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, faculty, and staff.

This year in particular has been a year of growth for The Elisabeth Morrow School. First, through your active participation and generosity, EMS is building the strong financial foundation we need. That fully 80% of our families donated to the Apple Tree Fund, and that the size of the Fund increased by 14% this fiscal year is evidence of how much this school means to our community and our students. Thank you for your engagement and support!

Second, this summer, we welcomed Interim Head Dr. Judy Fox. After meeting several qualified candidates, the Search Committee recommended Judy, a leader with deep experience in public and independent schools on both the East and West Coasts. Judy is supporting the next phase of EMS’ re-accreditation by the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools in which a team of independent school educators visited campus in October. She also has enthusiastically embraced our new Strategic Plan and has begun to work with the school’s leadership team to implement those elements of the Plan identified for Phase 1. We will have much to share on that at our State of the School meeting on February 1.

The highlight of the fall has been completing the search process for our new Head of School, Dr. Maureen Fonseca.

Maureen comes to us with an impressive resume of success in the many areas addressed in our Strategic Plan and with a sincere respect for the mission, values, and community feel of EMS. Perhaps most important is her passion for and understanding of the importance of education in empowering students so that going forward, they may have an impact on the world.

I want to thank the faculty and staff, who have been deeply engaged in ensuring that our school remains the best place for our students to grow and thrive through the entire arc of childhood. I am also grateful for the commitment of our trustees who have brought to our work, energy, ideas, and personal generosity with their time and financial support for the benefit of the school.

These are busy and exciting times at EMS, and this is as it should be. Schools today must be innovative, flexible institutions that adapt easily to meet students’ needs. Your support helps ensure that we can meet that challenge.

Our New Trustees

Richard Han is the founding partner of Crane Partners, which invests in convertible securities, private equity, and commercial real estate. He holds a master’s degree in financial statistics from Columbia University and a B.A., with honors, in economics from the University of Chicago, where he is a member of the College Advisory Council.

Rich and his wife, Boh Yeon, live in Cresskill, NJ, with their three children, Ethan ’18, Phoebe ’19, and William ’24.

Anurag Harsh, a musician by training, with two solo performances at Carnegie Hall, works in artificial intelligence, has published seven books, and writes for HuffPost, Forbes, and other publications. Anurag has been an active member of the EMS community, participating in initiatives from development to outreach and social media. He holds M.B.A. and M.S. degrees from the Wharton School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, respectively.

Anurag and his wife, Malvika, are the parents of Agustya ’22 and Vigyan ’26.

Jamil Myrie is Head of Retail Operations at Acreage Holdings. Jamil has more than 20 years of experience in retail development, real estate, and expansion, and recently served as North American Director of Real Estate, Development, and Asset Management with GrandVision NV, a leading global optical retailer. Jamil holds an A.B. from Harvard University and proudly serves on the Board of Regents of his secondary school alma mater, Mercersburg Academy. He and his wife, Amy, are parents of Kaori ’20 and Jasmine ’27.

Wendi Hoeben Thompson has more than 14 years of experience as a corporate lawyer at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP in New York and London and as a capital markets lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP in New York. She holds an LL.M. from Columbia Law School, a master in law degree from the University of Paris PantheonSorbonne, and a bachelor’s degree in law from Ghent University. She’s been part of the EMS community for two years. Wendi lives in Tenafly and is mother of Henry ’25 and Matthew ’28.

Dear EMS Community, It is my personal joy to get to know EMS families and to play a part in making the school’s transition year as productive and engaging as possible. And so, with this annual report of giving, I am particularly pleased to share with you the results of the 2017–2018 fiscal year, which was distinguished by important milestones and progress in several key areas.

Last year, the EMS community came together for a year-long process that yielded a new Strategic Plan and revisited the existing master plan for campus revitalization, setting the vision for the school’s next five years. Simultaneously, our faculty, staff, and Board of Trustees completed the work necessary for the school’s re-accreditation by New Jersey Association of Independent Schools, which happens only once each decade. Finally, as all of you know, the EMS community celebrated the conclusion of Aaron Cooper’s tenure as Head of School.

Although we can never adequately thank everyone who supports EMS, this report attempts to quantify the financial contributions we received from parents, alumni, and friends that provided vital resources for our students and teachers. Thanks to the remarkable response to last year’s #Rally4EMS, in which nearly 80 percent of all families participated, contributions to the Apple Tree Fund reached a new high. The importance of annual giving cannot be overstated because of its direct impact on our ability to provide a child-centered environment that promotes the highest standards for learning and growth in academics and character.

While the numbers contained in this report speak for themselves, it is always important to remember the warm feelings and strong devotion of our families toward our mission. I feel very fortunate to be part of such an energetic and committed community, and I hope you share in my excitement for the school year to come. Let’s all consider how we can make EMS an even better place for teaching and learning.

Growing Support for EMS

The Elisabeth Morrow School has a new fiveyear plan that guides our long-term thinking and decision-making, articulates how we best serve students, and is designed to fulfill our promise as an exemplary, threes-toeighth-grade independent school for the metropolitan area. The year-long strategic planning process involved the entire EMS community. Parents, students, faculty, and administrators engaged in conversations and structured exercises to examine the school’s place among other independent schools and to envision its future. More than 630 community members participated in an online survey, and over 120 attended Visioning Day on March 10, to “dream big” about the direction of our school.

The resulting recommendations informed the Strategic Plan that was affirmed by the Board of Trustees in April. The plan will provide a solid foundation for growth at EMS and offer continuity as we prepare to welcome a new Head of School in 2019.

Our community demonstrated unprecedented support for the school during the second #Rally4EMS. Parent participation in annual giving increased by 10 percent over the previous year and the Apple Tree Fund reached an all-time high-water mark, thanks to the generosity of our donors and leadership of our volunteers during the four-week rally.

The Apple Tree Fund provides unrestricted financial support for teaching and learning at every level. The appeal raised awareness about the importance of philanthropy to the health of our school and the immediate impact donors can make when they #Rally4EMS.

Embracing the Next Chapter

A longtime tradition at EMS, the biennial International Festival brought together hundreds of families for an afternoon of delicious food and socializing, with a broad range of culinary delights from around the world. The food, vibrant décor, and fun activities combined for a true celebration of our diverse and inclusive community.

This year’s festival partnered with charity:water, a nonprofit organization that brings clean drinking water to people in need around the globe.

The community said farewell to Aaron Cooper and his family – wife Kara and daughters Julia and Charlotte – after more than 15 years, including six as Head of School. During his time, Aaron was responsible for growing the middle school, leading EMS through a capital campaign and two major construction projects, hiring key leaders, and instituting enhanced curricula in several academic areas.

Aaron’s leadership brought our school to a stronger place, and EMS is ready to embrace its next chapter with Dr. Maureen Fonseca as the new Head of School, effective July 2019.

Dear EMS Community, The 2017–2018 school year was a tremendously successful one for the Parents Association! Kicking off with our Welcome Breakfast on the first day of school and ending with our annual Faculty Appreciation Luncheon, the calendar was jampacked with events that helped foster community, educate and engage parents, and support the school financially. Some of the PA highlights were the annual Book Fair, which for the first time started on a Sunday and surpassed all expectations; two group Broadway theater outings; our Fitness February series; an active community service group, and our ever-popular parent education Speaker Series.

And none of that even touches on the day-to-day classroom help, social gettogethers, School Store purchases, library reading, and lower school car line greeting that would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our engaged parent body.

As a result of all this activity, the PA was able to gift $15,000 to the Apple Tree Fund in June.

I owe a huge thank you to last year’s PA Executive Board, committee chairs, class parents, and volunteers. Without their commitment and energy, EMS would not enjoy the active, involved, and caring community which we are so fortunate to have.

The PA Executive Board is looking forward to another exciting year as we work to advance the EMS mission and the new Strategic Plan, while trying to adapt our traditions to match the needs of our current families. Volunteering for the Parents Association is one of the best ways to actively contribute to the success of the school, and we sincerely hope that each and every one of you will participate in some way.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION The Parents Association promotes the mission of The Elisabeth Morrow School through a partnership with parents, students, faculty, administrators, and the Board of Trustees.

Providing a rich menu of parent education and social opportunities throughout the year, the PA fosters a sense of inclusiveness that helps bind our families together and offers a forum for their interests. Further, the PA supports our faculty in the classroom and beyond, demonstrating the deep appreciation of the entire community for their work on behalf of our children.

EMS GALA On Thursday, May 3, the EMS community came together to celebrate retiring longtime faculty member Ronnee Lipman and generous donors the Romita family at the 2018 Auction Gala, A Night of Vintage Glamour.

The evening included cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, dinner, a live auction, and swing dancing. Proceeds from this event support the operating budget and the Endowment for Faculty.

Character Education Endowment This endowment, established in 2005, provides revenue for ongoing faculty development and presentations to parents and students in the area of character education. The integration of character education for all grades throughout the curriculum will build on the 4 C’s and strengthen our focus on developing integrity in our community.

The General Endowment Fund The yearly income generated by this unrestricted fund allows EMS to meet unexpected needs and support innovative learning initiatives as they arise.

Special Learning Services Endowment Established in 2006 by the Kulik family, this endowment provides funding to enhance our learning support services.

Anne Moloney Black ’57 Endowment Anne Moloney Black ’57 established this endowment in 2014 to provide tuition assistance for up to two children.

Special consideration will be given to qualified students who have lost a parent. Anne, who lost her own father in World War II, believes EMS’ focus on the joy of learning and the 4 C’s helped form the cornerstones of her life and served her well over the years. She hopes this fund will provide others with a similar experience.

Richard A. Davies Teaching Endowment

Established in 2013 by the Scherl family, this endowment recognizes the influential role that Mrs. Bower plays in EMS students’ successes. It supports tuition aid.

Established in 1988 to honor former Head of School Richard A. Davies, this endowment provides faculty development funds to foster the values he so cherished: the love of learning, sense of self-worth, and commitment to community.

Darryl Anne Burnham Memorial Fund The Darryl Anne Burnham Memorial Fund was established by the Burnham family in 1999. It provides annual tuition aid for a fourth-grade student who would otherwise not be able to share in the EMS experience. The school thanks the Burnham family and those who honor Darryl’s memory.

Gloria Dunn Endowment Fund This endowment was established in 2015 through a generous bequest from Gloria Dunn, a beloved and longtime teacher at Elisabeth Morrow. This fund will both honor Mrs. Dunn and provide tuition assistance.

Graham-Johnson Endowment Fund Established in 1976 with a donation from an anonymous benefactor, the Graham-Johnson Endowment honors former EMS teachers Susan Graham and Janet Johnson. Miss Johnson was a founding teacher at EMS and is remembered as one of the “pioneers” of the time. She taught nursery for more than 40 years. Miss Graham was appointed in 1930 by the school’s founder, Elisabeth Morrow. She was head kindergarten teacher and Chilton House librarian. She began the “cocoa parties,” a tradition that continues today.

On their retirement, Constance Chilton commented, “These two teachers won the admiration and affection of their colleagues through their dedication and talents. Their understanding

and skill with four- and five-yearold children endeared them to hundreds of students. They will always be held in the highest esteem by all who know them.”

This fund appropriately benefits faculty compensation.

Mary Hawkins Memorial Fund Mary Hawkins was a Chilton House teacher for 24 years and was revered for her dedication to young ones and their education.

Stephen P. Jones Endowment for Faculty and Staff Compensation Parents, students, faculty, alumni, and friends of former Head of School Stephen P. Jones established this endowment fund upon his retirement. The fund supports faculty and staff compensation.

George Penny Fund This endowment fund was established in 2000 to honor sixth grade teacher George Penny, who taught at EMS from 1981 to 2013. Students referred to Mr. Penny as a friend and an incredible teacher who challenged them through his unique instructional style. This fund provides financial aid for faculty children at EMS.

Lee Starr Technology Education Endowment Established in 1999 by the Toback family to celebrate the life of their cousin, Lee Starr, a teacher, this fund provides resources for the school to acquire cutting-edge technology in support of student learning.
