Photographic exhibition by Dominic Pote in collaboration with Full Circle Art Consultancy and ArtMoorHouse
! ! !Dominic Pote paints with light. Without the aid of a digital camera or other technological devices, he creates
images that suggest the actual experience of time. Hazy and dreamlike, his photographs imitate the process of memory itself. His subjects are seascapes, architecture and landscape, for he is attracted to the point where places meet: the city and the skyline, the shoreline and the sea.
!Working somewhere between the film-maker and the still photographer, his exposures last as long as he keeps
moving. Many of his photographs are two or three metres in length. His limited edition prints are framed by the physical act of walking. His images are both literal and metaphorical journeys, movements through space so that there remains something of the organic feel of their making. [Sue Hubbard - Freelance Art Critic who writes regularly for The Independent and The New Statesman]

Dominic Pote has been working as a fine-art photographer since graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in Photography in 2000. He has worked and exhibited all over the world, including a residency at Experian offices in Nottingham where he accompanied staff members on their journeys to work to take photographs based on their observations. His work is held in numerous private and public collections ranging from the Bank of Canada to Guy’s Hospital. Previous commissions include P&O Cruises, Barclays Bank, Experian UK, The British Council and the NHS.

From the Shoreline series, but the last piece in the series of 6, when I was already beginning to look at wave formations which then became the focus of the subsequent Ocean Surf series. With very abstract qualities, but with the important detail of the wave breaking, revealing droplets of water juxtaposed against the continual movement of water. In this piece, on a single length of film, both the moment in time and the duration of time are captured in one image - Dominic Pote

From the Shoreline series, made one winter on the Greek island of Milos. This particular part of the coast of the island has a unique lunar-like landscape of soft white volcanic rocks, shaped by both wind and water. This series looks at this ever-changing shoreline where the boundary between land and sea merge and can be seen to become one - Dominic Pote

Taken in the mysterious Cappadocia region of central Anatolia, Turkey. In this moon-like landscape, since ancient times, people have carved cave dwellings and churches into the soft rocks of Cappadocia- Dominic Pote

Dubai – as the camera sweeps from left to right, the horizon is curved and the land and the sea reassert their dominance in this otherwise manmade environment - Dominic Pote

With the Ocean Surf series of images, I have worked in the same location as my Shoreline series (the island of Milos in Greece) but this time I wanted to focus on the waves as they break close to the shore. This series is an attempt to capture both the continual movement of the sea as a body of water as well as the momentary changes on the surface and the play of light on the wave formations- Dominic Pote

The Grand Canal, Venice, taken from the stern of a vaporetto on a winter afternoon. As the camera moves and the vaporetto pulls away, the sun bathed buildings are softened and take on the fluid quality of the water - Dominic Pote

A winter sunrise in Venice in which the high water merges with the promenade and land and sea become one. Venice, a city built as much on the water as on land, there is an intimate relationship between the sea and the architecture which I hope to portray with this piece - Dominic Pote

The wild North Yorkshire moorland landscape meets the lush green valley of Glaisdale – an altered agricultural landscape of fields and hedgerows where man has made his marks, and yet there is a harmony between these two elements of this landscape - Dominic Pote

The rolling fields of Wiltshire just after the harvest in August. There is a golden hazy softness of a summer morning and the horizon curves in a sweeping arc, but in the centre there are defined lines of hay bales emphasising the sense of perspective. Originally commissioned by P&O for a lounge on board the Arcadia Cruise Ship- Dominic Pote

In the Thames, London series I have worked with the very obvious landmarks along the Thames in central London, the places which are generally over-photographed. I have attempted to capture these places from a transient viewpoint, as an urban experience, walking past and taking in the feeling of these places without actually standing still and recording their details - Dominic Pote

This image is an example of the importance of mistakes. I was attempting to capture the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral and was shooting above the line of traffic, purposely not including it in my frame. But every now and then a double decker bus would come a long and obscure my view. In this case the bus entered the frame at a the perfect moment and with almost impossible alignment with the architectural lines of St Paul’s, bringing a splash of red and blue colour into an otherwise very monochrome colour palette. The glass windows of the bus even reflected the trees opposite, adding further interest to the image. A moment of magic, unplanned and unrepeatable - Dominic Pote

This image is an example of the importance of mistakes. I was attempting to capture the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral and was Canary Skyline – originally commissioned by Barclays Bank for their World HQ offices in Canary Wharf. Given access to photograph the Canary Wharf estate from both the ground and rooftops, I worked on a collection of work capturing the play of light on this architectural environment of steal, glass, water and open skies- Dominic Pote
