CHARLES HADCOCK b 1965

Charles Hadcock’s dynamic sculpture is a testament to his unique working methods and rigorous thought processes.

As a student he would gather the debris of

everyday life and use the latent aesthetic qualities either as inspiration or a direct model to cast from. The objet-trouve gave way to the particular form; an object that has been meticulously planned to perform a function can in Hadcock’s hands become celebratory and aesthetic.

Thus the new function bestowed by the artist is to

perform as art and not as engineering. However it is only because of Hadcock’s depth of understanding for the engineering process and a respect for its innovation that such reimagining can take place so successfully. Hadcock is not only inspired by the process of engineering. Geology is another science that plays an important part in his work. The complexly patinated surface of his pieces is a reminder of eroded cliff faces, which are created by wind and water, sand-blasted and shocked into shape over the centuries. It is a thoughtful reimagining of this eternal process, and by choosing to replicate the natural characteristic of stone in his cast surfaces Hadcock seamlessly retains both the organic and mechanical sources of inspiration which enhances the sculpture’s overall artistic beauty. This deep understanding of the physical world gives a resonant power and a mystical quality.

Charles Hadcock was born in Derby in 1965 and now lives in the North West of England, based in Preston. He studied fine art at the Royal College of Art, London (1987-89), specialising in sculpture.
