EXHIBITION SUPPORTED BY GTO ENGINEERING Sixty years ago, at 29 years of age Mike Hawthorn became the first ever British Formula One World Driver’s Champion in his Ferrari 246 in a ‘golden age’ for the marque. That golden age also saw Hawthorne, in the same season, compete in sports cars for the Scuderia, chiefly at the wheel of a 250 TR. The season saw him on the entry list for five races in the Testarossa with mixed results. Starting in January, he did not start the Argentine 1000km and later in March, he recorded a DNF at the Sebring 12H. However, in May and June respectively, Hawthorn finished 3rd in the Targa Florio and then 2nd at the 1000km Nurburgring. Finally, Hawthorn entered Le Mans in June with his great friend Peter Collins but the pair suffered a clutch failure after 11 hours and 112 laps. Exhibited at ArtMoorHouse is a bare-metal 250 TR body on a rolling chassis that showcases the engineering expertise for which GTO Engineering is renowned.
