ARTIST’S STATEMENT Built in colourful layers of vibrant acrylic, the paintings submitted for the application are part of Deero's consistent body of works/ art practice which explores the idea of escapist worlds. The surreal character of her works can be traced back to Magic Realism and its idea of a ‘somewhere world’. Her paintings’ function is to create channels to dreamy zones of relaxation and contemplation, where the viewer can explore the alternative reality. Yet, an alternative world is a space that works by its own unexpected rules. As the viewer’s eye wanders through Deero’s purposefully “pleasant” landscapes, it encounters the unknown and unfamiliar, which produce a sense of uncertainty. The dreamy landscapes "float" between the sky and the forest, the lakes and the gardens, enrapturing the viewer in the play between the familiar and the unknown; only to finally settle in and confuse the viewer's eye. Coming through the materiality of the paint, the compositions conceal rather than reveal their subject – creating the paradoxical polarity, which is the main source of Deero’s work.
