TIM WRIGHT: Inside The Eye ArtMoorHouse, in collaboration with Albemarle Gallery, is pleased to present ‘Inside the Eye’, a comprehensive survey of recent work by London painter Tim Wright. This includes eight new, large-scale paintings and works on paper, and a selection of pieces f rom his two preceding exhibitions: Farseeing Eye (2019) and Into the Deep (2018).

ArtMoorHouse offers an ideal, contemporary Baroque setting in which to place the new with its antecedents. Its extensive scale allows a unique opportunity to view this substantial series of paintings and associated drawings.

While Into the Deep offered a series of Baroque f rames through which to enter a nebulous world, Far-seeing Eye explored beyond that gateway into a mythical Arcadian location that drew further on motifs inspired by the Baroque master carver, Grinling Gibbons.

The new work is the third stage in that extended journey. Seen here for the f irst time, these pieces enter more deeply into a dream landscape of heightened imagery that is familiar, but out of joint. There are f ragments of scenes or motifs that resist illusion. You are in a world, artif icial and strange, where normal rules are suspended.

The works exhibit a contrasting mix of closely-observed motif and gesturally-turbulent passages of rich and subtle colour. Describing both the specif ic and the general, the artist sets up a personal iconography of signif icant images, which jump f rom emphatic focus to veiled suggestion. The combination of forest decor and composition by f ragments is unsettling and hints at things hidden f rom view.

This is a mysterious arena of the imagination found beyond the gate and the normal f rame of reference. What is one to make of these singular combinations, allusive objects and bits of stories?

Tim Wright was born and grew up in London, where he continues to live and work. In the mid 1980s he graduated in Fine Art f rom Middlesex University. His early paintings displayed an interest in the f igure and explored its f ragmentation through a vigorous painting process. The body, the observed world and their expression through paint continue to assert themselves. His practice has developed along two strands : the portrait and f igure painting. Although one informs the other, they are separate and discreet. The portraits are concerned with capturing likeness and expressing personality. The f igure painting allows for the exploration of other, broader themes. Â Tim Wright has exhibited extensively and his work features in many collections, both in the UK and internationally. Most recently he has had a number of solo exhibitions with Shine Artists in Albemarle Street London, featured in the 2014 BP Portrait Award at The National Portrait Gallery, shown portraits at Petworth House in Sussex and Burgh House in London. Â He has a long experience of teaching and lecturing. He worked as a f ine art lecturer at most of the principal London art colleges, particularly Chelsea School of Art, Middlesex University and The Motley Theatre Design School. He continues to teach courses in painting at his studio in London.

From 2011 until 2013 he was engaged as painting consultant on the Mike Leigh directed f ilm 'Mr Turner'. He taught the actor Timothy Spall to paint, in order for him to prepare for the role, and, when f ilming began, advised him and other actors on set. This was a an immersive process which lasted for over two years.
