THESIS PROJECT: AN INTRODUCTION Cuba

T Y P E : Thesis Project S T U D I O : research in the university department and design studio 3 T U T O R : Prof. Riccardo Canella - riccardo.canella@polimi.it Prof. Marco Canesi, Prof. Vittorino Garatti Y E A R : Bachelor 5th - 6th semester (October/July 2018) U N I V E R S I T Y : Politecnico di Milano P R O J E C T T E A M : Elisa Pastorelli, Linda Martellini, Francesco Pavan My thesis project develops from a research conducted by professors Riccardo Canella and Marco Canesi with a team of students, architects and urban planners in the Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. The research aims at the strategic regional planning of Cuba, in order to boost its economy and its manufacturing system , after the embargo. From previous analysis, Cuba revealed as the most interesting country of the Caribbean due to its geographical position towards the international transshipment routes and its natural resources. The strategic plan involves the interception of international tradings and the processing of semi finished products to export The Cuban territory could be divided into productive areas lin ed by an efficient national infrastructural system which provide the transport of raw materials and goods. In particular were studied three infrastructural rings that connect the main strategic hubs (Santiago, San Luis, Alto Cedro, Sagua de Tanamo, MayarĂŹ, Guantanamo, Bayamo, Holguin and Las Tunas). From a research about the natural resources of the south-east region, I developed my proposal for a timber industry. Cuba had been subjected to an unsustainable deforestation between 1492 and 1962, that plummeted the percentage of its tropical forest coverage from 90% to 13,4%. Only with the Lay Forestal of 1998, the Cuban forest began to be protected and controlled by environment associations. Nowadays the 31% of Cuban territory is covered by forest and the percentage is increasing thanks to policies of protection and sustainable management of the territory. The tropical forest in an essential resource for the Cuban territory because it prevents the hydrogeological risk and protects the island from the hurricanes, very frequent in the South-East. With a sustainable management of forest, based on an optimal cutt-off frequency for each three species, it would be possible to create one timber industry in the Guantanamo province, with an input of 600.000 cubic metres of timber each year. This could be a trigger for Cuban economy. assumed simple woodwor ings as x lam and laminated timber that don t re uire complex professional and technical s ills or expensive machines The wood products firstly will be transported in all the country by the three infrastructural rings and used for refurbishments of old Cuban buildings (internal market). In some years the semi finished products could be exported by the antiago harbour hipothi ed in previous researches) and begin to compete in the international market.

G U A N T A N A M O C I T Y with all the projects developed by the students of the design studio 3. My project for a timber industry is located in the South, in an industrial area, near the railway

My thesis project takes the form of a research and composition work: technical details and structural analysis were not required by the studio. This is the reason why the main focus is on the concept design and on the figurative meaning of the architecture. The research was conducted with Linda Martellini and Francesco Pavan while the project was design the most by me. In fact I carried the project in my thesis dissertation. I had an active role during the process of all the project. The few drawings made by my collegues are indicated.

This project is composed by a unique volume, developed in different-high terraces with a courtyard in the middle. Thanks to its massivness and height, it becomes a landmark in the South of Guantanamo and marks the entrance to the timber industrial plant. The volume is crossed by the lifted linear runaway which allow workers to access directly to the two administrative centres: the industrial and the environment one. Two starwells permit workers to reach the green courtyard and the covered s uare at the ground oor the second oor with the offices or the terrace on the top of the administrative centre for the environment. The design process follows the idea of a rigid shell building enclosing an organic and dynamic interior.

The meeting between industry and city. This project aims at the connection between the industrial plant and the urban pattern of Guantanamo. For this reason were thought some facilities for the timber industry workers and some spaces for the citizens. All the functions are developed around a circle square, where workers and Guantanamo citizens meet. This circle space ideally represents the free exchange of ideas and the cultural progress of Cuban population, aiming at the overcoming of the strong restrictions imposed by the embargo. The square contains an oasis with palms and fontains, which allows workers and citizens to relax in a shaded and cool area, protecting themselves from the tropical climate of Cuba. Futhermore, a semi-circular ramp developed around the square allow people to reach the linear runway, directly connected to the industry. In particular were designed a public library, some wood craft stores, some spaces for workshops and temporary exhibitions, temporary residents and a guesthouse for workers. I’ve had an active role during all the design process. In particular I developed the concept, the 3D model, the views and some elevations. Drawings done by my collegue when indicated.

ZERO ENERGY STUDENTS SHAREHOUSE Via Sant' Agnese, Milan, Italy T Y P E : Academic Project S T U D I O : Costruzione dell'architettura T U T O R : Prof.ssa Monica Lavagna - Monica.Lavagna@polimi.it Y E A R : Bachelor 4th semester ( March/July 2017) U N I V E R S I T Y : Politecnico di Milano P R O J E C T T E A M : Elisa Pastorelli, Lorenzo Broglia

Designing a residential complex nowadays means face with the theme of sustainability under many different aspects: social, economical and environmental. This project, located in a small estate in the city centre of Milan meets the demand of a large amount of users, such as off-site students, nuclear families, couples and single people. The general shape responds to the urban situation, opening a study room and a public path inside city center (social sustainability). Environmental sustainability was achieved by the architectural integration of renewable energy production systems photovoltaic panels and solar thermal and designing the facades and oor stratigraphies in order to reach the best energy performances E certificate using Ediclima software always considering the energy consumption involved in life cycle of materials (LCA evaluation). Plan organization allows the long-time exibility of apartments during the entire use of the builiding and the facade consists of removable modular pannels that can be changed according to needs (economical sustainability). The project was studied in two different ways: one using steel technologies (presented here) and the second one using concrete ones. In this project I've had an active role during all the design process, from the concept to the technical decisions. I worked most on materials choices, sections and concept schemes. Drawings done by my collegue when indicated.

THE WORLD FROM A BUBBLE Cortona, Toscana, Italy T Y P E : Workshop Cortona Open 3D T U T O R : Prof. Gianluca Vita, Prof. Sergio Sebastian Y E A R : 28 July / 5 August 2018 P R O J E C T T E A M : Elisa Pastorelli, Beatrice Parma, Claudia Parissenti, Arnold Pere, Francesco Pavan

GENERAL LAYOUT

The aim of the workshop was to design a temporary installation for the Girifalco Castle in order to attract tourists during all the year. For this reason we thought about a temporary installation of blow-up architecture which create a path all around the castle. People who enter the colorful bubbles could experience particular sensations such as eating typical products in the dark restaurant in order to maximize the taste or walk trough different spaces with different temperatures, colors and lights in order to create a great sense of disorientation. Otherwise people could try the bubble of sound where is impossibile to hear any noise in contrast with outside where people are surrounded by nature sounds. One of the main theme of this project is the accessibility for people with disabilities who could become guides for the attractions. At the same time it could sensitize people towards the ‘diversity’ and make people aware of the importance of the use of senses. In this project I’ve had an active role during all the design process but I’ve worked most on the rendering which I report here. SOUND BUBBLE
