ENERGY EFFICIENCY SUCCESS STORIES
Driven by more and more policies and regulations, energy efficiency has become a core theme and focus in many industries, including transport, automotive, building, households or services, and a growing number of companies are being more responsible when it comes to energy consumption. The ability to reduce energy consumption in all industries can have a huge impact both economically and environmentally. Energy efficiency is critical for businesses and will be critical in the coming years. Companies around the globe already started implement technology solutions and adopt new corporate values in order to significantly reduce energy consumption. Today, we would like to share with you some success stories of businesses that have reduced their bills while increasing operational efficiencies: The Carrier Corporation, a manufacturer and distributor of heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, with over 43,000 employees serving customers in 170 countries on six continents, embarked on a systematic process of reducing its fleet of trucks and cars energy usage and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. The company deployed a variety of strategies including rightsizing the vehicles, monitoring driver behavior using telematics data and removing unnecessary weight from vehicles. The telematics technology allows local managers to monitor driving practices, including speeding, idling and unauthorized use of vehicles. Carrier can also compare fuel economy performance across regions and see where improvements are the most significant, allowing the management to see who is using the data and take action on it. Speeding across the entire service fleet was reduced by more than 40% and Carrier has reduced GHG emissions by more than 30%.
Diversey, a leading provider of cleaning and hygiene products to the institutional marketplace, is using a set of tools to measure energy use. Through these solutions, Diversey analyzes costs and energy efficiency opportunities across the company’s global building portfolio.
Poland Spring, bottled water manufactured and a subsidiary of NestlÊ, uses non-food-based biofuels and telematics to reduce its truck fleet emissions. The company installed onboard computers to track driver performance and to reduce the manpower associated with the paperwork. Soon the company learned that the trucks were idling for as much as 1,400 hours per month during the winter months. Cutting idling time has reduced the fleet’s fuel consumption by 8,000 gallons and GHG emissions by about 77 tons per year. OMV-Petrom, one of the biggest Oil & Gas producers in Europe, implemented a fuel efficiency solution, which offers the possibility to identify high fuel consuming points and to initiate projects for replacement or other corrective measures in order to bring fuel economies and cost reductions. The solution showed its first results, reducing the fuel consumption with 12% in the first 3 months, saving OMV-Petrom 15 million.
eBay installed at its San Jose headquarters a power management software, lighting retrofits, and replaced older computers. The projects will save more than $1.5 million over their lifetimes, and avoid over 4,800 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
It seems that energy efficiency technologies, monitoring software, and corporate values have a great impact on companies. Firstly there are the associated cost savings but we shouldn’t forget that all these allow companies to meet local, national or international regulations that are more and more stringent.
