People envy her for having a boyfriend who is blessed with good looks, but she laughs it off, saying: “It’s not as if I’ve never been in love. I was just quiet about it in the past. This time, I’m not hiding it. There is no question between us about the age difference. What we do have is mutual affection. That’s all that matters. “Sometimes I told him that I was shocked myself when I thought of our age difference. He said he didn’t feel that way, and thought I was like his kid sister. He is very funny and quite grown up, probably because he was a graduate in finance and has lived on his own, away from his family, from a very young age. “I often feel he is a lot more mature than me in his understanding of life. 要說洞悉先機、一早看準中國市場的，Bovet絕對是先驅之一。在參觀廠房期間，看到十八世紀的歷史文件，上面印有大大的「播喴」標誌，「喴」是古字，是開動火車的象聲詞；今日品牌取名「播威」，就很有「誰與爭鋒」的威勢！ Bovet must be one of the early birds that got the worm in China. The brand’s historical documents from the 18th Century at the factory we visited had two prominent Chinese characters that formed Bovet’s name in Chinese. One character is an ancient word that means a moving train. That character has evolved to give Bovet’s Chinese name a different meaning – demonstration of superiority. Indeed, it has given it an air of unmatched superiority.

跟清朝道光談生意 Bovet是歷史悠久的瑞士鐘錶品牌，創立於18世紀，昔日製造懷錶，今天則以陀飛輪聞名，其次是頂級工藝錶，還有7日鏈，以及小量的三針簡約錶，跟計時、世界時間、月相、三問、響鬧等功能絕緣，旗幟鮮明。

Doing business with the Dao Guang Court of Qing Dynasty Bovet is a long-standing Swiss watch brand established since the 18th Century. It made pocket watches in the early days. Today it is known for tourbillons, as well as premier artisanal watches, 7-day power reserve models and a small quantity of simple three-hand watches. It steers clear of chronographs, world time, moon phase, minute repeaters and alarm watches. This sets the brand apart.

話說在1818年，當時21歲的Edouard Bovet被英國公司派往清朝認可的商貿港廣州工作，適逢瑞士機械鐘錶發展黃金期，中國又正值繁華盛世，喜歡外來玩意，Edouard 便跟Alphonse、Frederic及Gustave在倫敦創立Bovet品牌，跟清朝道光皇帝大談生意，輸出了不少以中國為題材的人物及花卉琺瑯彩繪懷錶作品。翻查歷史，Bovet是最早擁有中文名稱的瑞士鐘錶品牌之一。

購下一項歷史任務 Bovet的發展也不是一帆風順，經歷了四代家族經營，最終在1932年失守，要到 1989年，才由大集團Michael Parmigiani重新接管。直到2001年，本身從事藥廠、自小受祖父影響而酷愛鐘錶的Pascal Raffy再次入主播威，矢志打造垂直整合的生產模式，由設計、到原材料打造零件，以至修飾打磨裝嵌、測試及銷售都一力承辦，過程絕不假手於人。Raffy曾認真地表示：「我買下的，不單是一個品牌，而是一項歷史任務。」 Raffy很快便購入了製造陀飛輪、機芯、游絲、錶盤和錶殼的公司，更買下 Château de Motiers古堡。我們先參觀的位於Tramelan的Dimier 1738 Manufacture，一間垂直整合的生產王國。Dimier 1738前身是一間專造陀飛輪的廠房，曾多番易手，由 Progress改名STT （Swiss Timing Technology），再由Raffy收購易名。Dimier 1738錶廠

古老機械仍有價值，由經驗老到的技師操作，體驗了廠房的新舊共融。 Old machines are still valuable. They are operated by experienced technicians, and is a testament to the mix of the old and the new in the plant.

佔地1,500坪，設計師、製錶師達70多人，曾研發59款機芯、10年間註冊了15項專利，廠房掌握40多種工藝。這裡是一間新舊融合的大廠房，新的儀器包括5軸CNC機器，基本上細微至數毫米的零件也能切割出來，種類更多達千種以上，我們主要參觀了齒輪及螺絲製造、平衡擺輪切割及打磨程序；雖然無緣觀看比較機密的游絲生產過程，不過從報表得知，由0.6mm的圓條材料，經過多重拉長及壓扁，最終達到0.0315mm，誤差度只有0.0005mm，精細度驚人，這兒生產出來的游絲亦會供應給其他牌子，畢竟 Bovet年產量只有三千多，用不到這麼多呢！除了發條游絲及寶石軸承，差不多所有零件都能在Dimier 1738生產出來。這裡亦保留了不少傳統巨型機械，負責包括切割、打磨及雕刻工序，由專業人士維修及操控，保存得很好。

It created a good number of enamel pocket watches featuring Chinese figures and floral drawings. Going through history, Bovet was one of earliest Swiss watch brands to have a Chinese name.

Acquiring a mission of historical proportion It wasn’t plain sailing for Bovet. After four generations, the business fell in 1932. It was taken over by conglomerate Michael Parmigiani in 1989. By 2001, Pascal Raffy, who was in pharmaceuticals but who also inherited the love of watches from his grandfather, took charge of Bovet. He was determined to create a vertical production model, and took control of every step, from making parts with raw materials to embellishing, polishing, testing and marketing. Raffy admitted: “I bought not only a brand, but a mission of historical proportion.” Raffy quickly acquired a company that made tourbillon, movements, balance springs, dials and cases. He also bought Château de Motiers. We visited Dimier 1738 Manufacture at Tramelan first. It is a vertical production kingdom. Dimier 1738 used to be a factory specialising in making tourbillon. It had been changed hands – renamed STT (Swiss Timing Technology) by Progress in one stage, and then renamed again by Raffy. The Dimier 1738 factory occupying close to 4,500 square metres has a 70-plus team of designers and watchmakers. The team has developed 59 mechanisms and registered 15 patents in 10 32

一意重新造好腕錶。這座古堡的名字是：Château de Motiers。 Château de Motiers佇立於高聳山峰，四野綠草田園盡在腳下，現今成為Bovet的總部，同時也是Raffy先生在瑞士的居所。那天我們有幸在Raffy先生的大宅內午膳，他歡迎大家隨處欣賞內裡的名畫、古董和藝術擺設，我們看到的，除了奢華、也有品味。席間 Raffy先生談笑風生，分享他的生活及工作軼事，談鐘錶談得興起，他索性把腕錶除下，輕輕一扭，一個小型座鐘便安然置於餐桌上。最後他著我們別忘了拿走銀製的餐巾圈留念，看著上面刻有品牌名稱，也刻著 2017年份，就明白Raffy先生對細節是如何一絲不苟。 years. The factory masters more than 40 forms of artistry. It is a factory mixing the old and the new – there are new machineries such as 5-Axis CNC machine which is able to cut thousands of types of minute parts measuring millimetres. We watched the making of gears and screws and the cutting and polishing of balance wheels. Though we didn’t get to see the more secretive manufacturing process of balance springs, we can see from reports that they are made with 0.6mm round threads that are pulled and compressed down to 0.0315mm, with a variation of just 0.0005mm. The level of precision is simply stunning. The balance springs produced by the factory are supplied to other brands too, as the factory makes more than 3,000 balance springs a year which is more than enough for its own use. In addition to balance springs and jewel bearings, almost all other parts can be produced in Dimier 1738 too. The factory has also kept a number of large traditional machines for cutting, polishing and engraving. They are maintained in great condition as they are taken care of and operated by professionals.

Returning to the Castle where it all began There was once a 13th Century castle at Val-de-Travers that had gone through its fair share of ups and downs. In the 17th Century, it was devastated and rebuilt into a prison. The Bovet family acquired it in 1820 and kept it for a century before donating it to the Neuchatel state government. It had since been refurbished as a restaurant. In 2006, Pascel Raffy acquired it, just so the brand could return to where Bovet started and where he could put his heart into watchmaking. The castle is called Château de Motiers.

地靈人傑手巧古堡除了大宅，另一座大樓是兩層的Bovet總部。下層是辦工室，上層是高手雲集的工作坊。工作坊的規模沒Dimier 1738巨大，也沒有重型機器及化學原材料，主要負責複雜零件裝飾及機芯裝嵌工作，以及不同的工藝修飾如琺瑯彩繪和金雕等。在這裡工作的人，需要有特別恬靜及寧定的心、手及神，而我也認為，錶匠們在如此謐靜舒逸的環境工作，彷彿都能盡吸山林大地之靈氣，亦造就了每一枚精雕細琢的Bovet錶。在另一個小房間，工作人員端出很多古董懷錶給我們欣賞，它們以琺瑯彩繪為主，題材圍繞花卉、禽鳥及中國風。看到這些作品，會深深明白當年的中國皇帝為何如此著迷，且大量購入珍藏，現時故宮博物館仍收藏有不少Bovet作品。

The chateau stands on a high hill surrounded by green fields. It is now Bovet’s headquarters, and the residence of Mr Raffy in Switzerland. We had the honour of being invited to Mr Raffy’s residence for lunch. He welcomed us to admire the valuable paintings, antiques and art pieces there. The place is luxurious and also shows that he has taste. Mr Raffy was great company over lunch, sharing anecdotes about life and work. When he was excited by the topic of watches, he took off the watch from his wrist, turn a knob ever so gently, and voila, a mini clock was set on the table. After lunch, he reminded us to take home the silver napkin ring on the dining table for memento. It’s marked with the brand’s name and the year 2017. It showed how much Mr Raffy care about details.

Serenity gives the work a different spirit Apart from the residence, the other building of the chateau is Bovet’s two-storey headquarters. The lower level is for offices, and the upper level is the workshop for the master craftsmen. The workshop is nowhere near as big as Dimier 1738, and it doesn’t have heavy machineries or chemical raw materials. It is mainly used for decorating parts of complication and assembling of mechanisms, as well as other artistry such as enamelling and gold engraving. The craftsmen here need a still and steady hearts, hands and concentration. I do think that people working in here will show the same serenity of the land that enables them to imbue each Bovet master piece with untold beauty. In another small room, the staff brought out a collection of antique watches for us to ogle. Many of them were decorated with enamel of flowers, birds and oriental motifs. These pieces clearly demonstrated why they captured the imagination of the Qing emperor, who acquired a large collection of them. Many Bovet watches are curated in the Palace Museum.

What’s even more stunning is that luminous material has been applied to make the tiger look even more powerful at night. More impressive still is that the enamelling was done on highly brittle mother of pearl. In the repeated highheat processes for enamelling, a minor misstep could put all the hard work to waste. Take note from now on that Bovet with nearly 200 years of history could leave you in awe anytime.

Worldwide made-to-measure service The brand has introduced a worldwide made-to-measure service, offering a choice of luxurious materials for bespoke coats, tuxedos, suits, vests and tailored pants. In addition to 13-micron fine wool, Suri alpaca and cashmere, the brand’s proprietary superior material, Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti, is also available. Customers can have their measurements taken in a flagship store or a designated store, and then choose the fabric and design details. The order is then sent to the atelier in Italy, where the garment is handmade, stitch by stitch, by a tailor. The hand-stitching alone can take more than eight hours. The whole item will undergo some 160 steps and take eight to 10 weeks to complete.

Peak 2 Peak Crossing the Mountains via Cable Car There are two ways to get to the top of Blackcomb Mountain. You can take a chairlift from the foot of the mountain, or ride the Whistler Village Gondola cable car up Whistler Mountain and then take the Peak 2 Peak Gondola to Blackcomb Mountain. Each method has its unique appeal. The chairlift is an open seat and the rider can enjoy a casual, breezy ride, while feeling an adrenaline rush as feet dangle in the wind. The closed cable car offered by Peak 2 Peak Gondola feels a bit more steady. This 11-minute trip is the longest cable-car ride in the world, at 4.4 kilometres. The ride not only climbs the mountain, but also crosses the deep valley between Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain. With a view of the long and winding Fitzsimmons Creek, and the fir and pine trees lining the cliffs, the experience is quite magnificent. The cable car includes some units that have a viewing window on the bottom, giving riders an exhilarating view of the deep valley beneath.

An Honest and Authentic Interior The space was designed by Carlson’s life partner, Kevin Bismanis, who is an architect by training. He has utilized flooring from an old firehouse for the hull-shaped ceiling, while the main wall panels come from a 100-year-old barn in Agassiz and the bar panelling from the old Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The interior’s intimate and relaxed vibe attracts the suit-andtie crowd, as well as the creative-and-casual set. The space does not intimidate, and the servers are seriously passionate about the food and drink they serve. People working at Burdock & Co. remind you of the servers in France, who are not college kids working temporarily for one season, but are consummate professionals in the business for life. Many restaurants in Vancouver are currently suffering from a critical shortage of competent servers and are having to make do with whoever they can find. Not so at Burdock. The 18th-century silk wall coverings used throughout the castle were imported from China at the time and during renovation were removed,

cleaned and replaced. The results have to be seen to be appreciated. For generations, the Roero family occupied the 30-room manner house. It was the life-long dream of Count Giacinto Reoro of Guarene, an industrialist and amateur architect, who sadly died before the castle was completed. His sons, Traiano and Teodoro, finished what their father started and the Italian gardens they laid out around the castle in the first half of the 18th century have bloomed into one of 怡人花園美景。 The gardens were laid out to Count Guaren's design in 1740.

That’s not to say they will all be fully electric vehicles; many are likely to be gas-electric hybrids, like our tester. The T8 hybrid is one of three powertrains offered on the new S90, with the others being the 250-horsepower T5 AWD and the 316-horsepower T6. All have 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, with the T5 using a turbocharger and the T6 both a turbocharger and a supercharger. The T8 hybrid powertrain, which is also available on the XC90, also includes a 2.0-litre supercharged and turbocharged inline four. The 87-horsepower electric motor, which drives the rear wheels, brings the total horsepower up to 400 with 472 lb/ft of torque. The S90 T8 comes with an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The hybrid variant of the S90 is not the only interesting change for 2018. This year, all S90s coming to Canada are the long-wheelbase version, making it seem more like a full-size luxury sedan with a cavernous backseat that has 4.5 inches more legroom than the outgoing model. In fact, the S90 offers the most rear legroom in its class and all these long-wheelbase models for Canada are built in China, where there is a large market for such vehicles.
