Upfront

The last few months have seen a flurry of activity in the flooring industry with a plethora of new products, business changes, staff appointments, industry exhibitions and social events as can be seen in our very extensive News section in the magazine. Recently there has been a crop of retirements amongst some of our best known and longest serving industry members. Among these have been Will Verschaeren of Airstep, Paul Amos of Choices, Bill Tovey of Carpet Court and Andrew Verstak of Tuftmaster. For most, retirement is a time to step back from the rigours of business life, do some travelling, play golf and generally relax. However, it would seem that retirement isn’t for everyone with Andrew Verstak coming back to work after only 10 weeks of leisure. Andrew has taken up the challenge of running The WoolSet, which is now part of Newfurn group (Choices Flooring) after the retirement of another industry stalwart, Don Currie. Flooring magazine wishes all the retirees and their business replacements a safe and enjoyable holiday season and a busy and prosperous 2013 – in work or in leisure as well as our best wishes to everyone for the coming holiday season and 2013. Seasons greetings.

Boral Timber guides advise on constructing in bushfire zones Boral Timber has developed a suite of easy reference guides for acceptable timber construction in bushfire prone areas. The free brochures are designed to be used in conjunction with Australian Standard: Construction of buildings in bushfire prone areas (AS3959 – 2009), which now applies in all parts of Australia. Tailored information is available for New South Wales (NSW) and South Australia (SA), where additional building regulations need to be considered. The Boral Timber brochures provide advice on the construction of external walls, roof framing, internal surfaces, elevated floors/subfloors, stairs, decks and ramps with timber. Any development on land that is designated as bushfire prone must consider bushfire and meet the requirements of AS3959 – 2009 (the Standard). According to the Standard, there are various levels of risk of Bushfire Attack Levels (BAL), which measure the severity of a building’s potential exposure to a bushfire. As the BAL level increases, so does the severity of bushfire attack from embers, radiant heat and direct flame. The Standard uses the BAL as a basis for establishing the requirements for

construction to protect buildings from bushfire attack. According to Clinton Skeoch from Boral Timber: “With Australia’s dry climate many areas are prone to bushfire but homeowners in these areas should not have to compromise on beautiful design because of their location. These brochures provide recommendations on how and where to use timber from the Boral range such as products made from blackbutt and spotted gum, which have bushfire-resisting properties and meet the requirements of BAL-29. Boral Timber has achieved Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) chain of custody certification (AS 4707-2006) for its timber products. This means that timber used to produce Boral Timber's hardwood flooring, decking and structural timber has been sourced from certified, legal and sustainably managed resources. The Australian Forestry Standard Scheme also has mutual recognition by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Scheme (PEFC) - the world's largest forest management certifier. The brochures can be downloaded online at the Boral Timber website www. boral.com.au/timber.

Paul Amos retires After more than 21 years in the role of General Manager at Newfurn (Choices Flooring, formerly Carpet Choice), Paul Amos recently decided it was time to pass over to the next generation. Andrew Lewis, the former MD at Polyflor, will take up at the role at Newfurn. Under Paul’s management, Newfurn went from a small Victoria home furnishings group to a national flooring group, earning itself the reputation as one of the industry’s most respected cooperatives with 135 stores. On being asked about his retirement, Paul noted that many long term industry personalities had moved to the next stage of their life in recent months, making way for a younger generation. He said: “This industry is in need of younger, fresher points of view. With Andrew’s appointment, he will bring drive and energy to the role and take the fresh and unique approach of Choices to the next level. “I know he is keen to drive growth, in both membership numbers and volume, to ensure Choices Flooring is recognised by all in the industry as Australia’s leading floorcovering group.” Andrew spent 14 years with Polyflor, the past nine as MD. He brings a great deal of industry experience to his new role and was instrumental in driving the presence of that business to its present position of market leadership in its sector.

News FCANSW appoints new committee The Floor Coverings Association of NSW (FCANSW) has announced its new committee for 2012-13. The association began in 1981 and has been integral in the development and support of TAFE, industrial relations in negotiation of Enterprise Agreements on behalf of the industry and, in more recent times, played an important role in the development of the new Australian Standard 1884-2012 as well as the proposal and development of a National Floorcoverings Association. This year sees a diverse, enthusiastic committee that has a willingness to see the association grow and develop a professional industry that can represent all parties. The committee comprises President, Jason Carter, JDC Flooring, Vice President,

William Tree, TAFE NSW and Treasurer, Chris Lowe, Lomac Commercial Flooring along with committee members Carl Albrecht, Australian Work Health and Safety; Con Diomis, Forbo Floorcoverings; Gary Eggers, Tarkett Australia; Peter Kelly, Peter Kelly Flooring; Scott Kelly, Polyflor Australia; David Provest, MJS Floorcoverings; and Gary Sheppard, Bass Floor Company Newcastle. “One of our first projects will be a sub-committee to look into the moisture content of slabs in relationship to the new Standard and manufacturers’ guidelines,” said Jason Carter. “The chairperson for this committee is Chris Lowe.

“TAFE NSW is currently conducting a course on Inspecting and Testing Subfloors – a one day course that I, personally, found informative and provided a great understanding of moisture in slabs. It is a course suitable not only for the contracting fraternity, manufacturers will also get a greater understanding of the requirements of subfloors in relation to the Australian Standard and Installation Guidelines. This will create great opportunities to address architects and specifiers to ensure they understand our requirements for the installation of floorcoverings,” he said.

“As President, I am proud to have been elected for the next term. Having been in the industry for 25 years and involved with the association during that time, I have found that it has been an important part of my life in developing relationships with both manufacturers and fellow contractors. It has also helped me to understand my own business and assist with the decision making as well as giving me the confidence to know that what I do is correct and the obstacles I encounter are the same ones that others encounter. “The Association is open to all businesses and I would like to encourage people to be involved, to learn and impart the knowledge they have to create a great industry for all involved,” said Jason.

The company showed how its seamless systems are engineered to cope with the heavy demands of Australia’s industrial sector – including heat, chemical spillage and physical impact – and provide an impenetrable

barrier against bacteria and contamination. To show the capability of its range, Flowcrete has recently launched a new campaign across Australia, entitled ‘Get More From Floors.’ Two of the campaign’s key areas are speed and safety, and Flowcrete showed how its floors can help achieve a safer environment and deliver economic and time-saving benefits due to the speed of its installation, using fast-track systems including Flowfast.

New flooring products under one umbrella Ten European flooring producers gathered in Munich on October 26 to launch a new association: the MMFA – Multilayer Modular Flooring Association. The final trigger was the increasing sales volumes of multilayer floorings with various surfaces such as LVT, cork, PU or PET. Now, all multilayer products that have not found a home yet with the existing associations, will now get the opportunity to have their interests represented under the new MMFA umbrella. The MMFA will advocate technical features such as

Husband-wife partnership allows business to thrive It is cliché to say that behind every great man is an even greater woman. However, for Great Southern Floors this may be true. Talia Jones from Great Southern Floors recently won HIA-CSR 2012 Hunter Region Business Partner of the Year. Earlier in the year her husband and business owner, Shane Jones, received the Australian Timber Flooring Association Contractor of the Year award. “I can honestly say that Great Southern Floors would not be the business it is today without her,” Shane said. Since Talia joined Shane in Great Southern Floors, their turnover has doubled and the business has grown from a single tradesman to a fully fledged brand gaining recognition for superior service and quality craftsmanship. Only in their second year of business, Talia’s increasing involvement has allowed Shane to utilise his industry experience and concentrate

on their high standard of work. Talia is making the most of her corporate hospitality background to bring a fresh and innovative approach to the way Great Southern Floors does business. “I’m so proud Talia has been recognised as a young woman working hard to better the industry and for everything she has put into our business ” Shane said.

News 2012 Australian Timber Design Awards winners announced The winners of the 2012 Australian Timber Design Awards have been announced with the top prize going to Paul Haar Architect for Candlebark School Library, a earth-covered library built into the side of a hill in Victoria's Macedon Ranges. In the Flooring category, the winner was Knox Grammar School Great Hall + Aquatic Centre in Wahroonga, NSW designed by Jones Sonter Architects. Timber was selected to feature heavily in the project for many reasons, especially for its durability and hard wearing qualities together with its wide range of applications

in both traditional and contemporary ways. In the Great Hall, blue gum timber was used on the stage and around the main entry doors to give a welcoming, warm inviting feeling. Perforated and angled plywood timber panels were used on the ceilings and walls, arranged strategically throughout the hall, helping achieve visual variety and exceptional acoustics. Solid and perforated flat timber panels were also used at low levels to conceal storage and a tough surface to the surrounds of the basketball courts. The timber sports floor in the main hall met the required resilience during sports

activities, also providing an impressive, attractive surface for assemblies and other school functions. The entry foyer hardwood timber floor supports selected blackbutt boards arranged in a large checkerboard pattern, detailed and placed to align with surrounding architectural elements, such as the large glass façade’s structural fins and wall panels. The Hall’s eight three metre high, solid timber doors and large portal entry linings are made from Sydney blue gum. Sitting between the doorways are angled hoop

pine veneer timber wall panels arranged in varying directions for acoustics and visual interest. This gives the entry foyer a dynamic backdrop that can be seen from outside the building. The main stair, at one end of the entry foyer, is a steel structure that wraps around the lift core and features timber landings and treads. The runners up in this category were McBride Charles Ryan for Cloud House and Complex Timber Structures for Oak Hall, Melbourne Rudolf Steiner School.

manufacturers can show their products in the heart of that market and where buyers can see every kind of floor covering in one location,” said David Zhong, president of VNU Exhibitions Asia. “Our goal is to become the leading high-end ceramic tile exhibition in the Asia Pacific region.” In addition to adding ceramic and stone floorings, the show will offer a unique marketing platform, InnovAction flooring, to introduce new floorcovering products in China. “Domotex asia/ChinaFloor is not just Asia’s largest floorcovering show, it is the gateway to China’s floorcovering market, which

influences all of Asia,” said Jim Gould, president of the Floor Covering Institute. “The show’s organisers have the resources to help manufacturers expose their new products in China, especially in major cities of the Eastern developed area such as Shanghai, where construction and demand for floorcovering is high.” To increase exposure of their new products both inside the show and around China, manufacturers can use the InnovAction marketing plan, which provides for value added services on site and target marketing to areas with high floorcovering demand in new urban centres of China.

N EW O’Connor FlooringXtra Another FlooringXtra store has opened up in Western Australia, this time in O’Connor. The big green trees that are a feature of the brand are spreading quickly throughout WA as well as nationally. This is the group’s 40th store nationally and ninth store to be opened in Western Australia since the group commenced in September 2011. “Owners of the O’Connor store, Luke and Ashleigh Davey are a young couple on the move, showing that hard work and effort pays off,” explained FlooringXtra’s Steve Griffin. “In the lead up to the opening the couple have completed renovations to their home to be able to accommodate their first born daughter, Celest, who was born on 12 November 2012.

“This is a great achievement given that this couple have spent the majority of their working lives in traditional retail business and have only been involved within the flooring industry for a few years.” Luke is very happy with the change to FlooringXtra citing increased traffic and an increase in his average sale. He wants to grow his business over the coming years and believes that this can be achieved through both the expansion of his store and working collectively with other FlooringXtra members to help develop his business. Luke says he likes the camaraderie within the group and the support he receives from fellow members and the team at FlooringXtra.

WoolSet joins up with Newfurn The premium wool based WoolSet group recently become part of the Newfurn group (Choices Flooring), after being owned and operated by Don Currie for 32 years. Don Currie, having decided to retire, was keen to see his group continue to operate under the same principles and values he had established over the years and was, therefore, very happy to see Newfurn and WoolSet come together. Andrew Verstak, the former General Sales and Marketing Manager of Tuftmaster, was excited about being approached to join WoolSet as the General Manager – just ten weeks into his retirement. Announcing the decision to the Newfurn membership, General Manager Paul Amos stated that bringing the two groups together made huge sense, allowing them to strengthen each other’s position and provide some obvious synergies.

WoolSet will remain focused on the premium end wool market. With 19 stores in Victoria, Tasmania and southern NSW, there are plans afoot to expand the group to a very limited but national network of stores. As a consequence, WoolSet members can look forward to some very exciting developments designed to strengthen their market position, with a group that offers outstanding support and value.

Retailer of the month

Keeping it in the family Wall T Wall Floorcoverings and Blinds, Ringwood, Victoria

I

n 1975 Eddy Nissner started a small flooring operation in Ringwood, Victoria with the aim of bringing superior quality flooring to Melbourne’s eastern suburbs with faceto-face service and without breaking the bank. Over the years Wall T Wall has grown to a thriving business in the local community and beyond. Today, the business remains in the family with Eddie’s sonin-law, Tony Nicholson coming on board, bringing a whole new look, a new modernised location, and now wallpaper, curtains, blinds and tiles to further its commitment to full home design. Wall T Wall’s new location provides it with spacious modern premises including

a large airy showroom and a workroom as well as an interior design centre and offices upstairs. The easy to navigate store layout has a comfortable consulting area, complimentary tea and coffee, and the latest colours and design concepts on full visual display. Eddy is regarded by many as a stalwart in the flooring industry in Victoria. Starting as a trainee carpet and vinyl layer at 15 years of age, Eddy quickly moved into retail, working for well known retailer Lawfords for 19 years. Whilst there, he became good friends with Horst Tingelhof and George Prelovski and it was Horst that Eddy partnered with to form Wall T Wall, with George as an assistant.

Together they built up the business, working together for 20 years until Horst retired. In the first seven years the business grew so fast they had to have the workroom elsewhere. Eventually they outgrew their premises and had to look for another, larger building. “In some ways having to move proved to be beneficial as it actually gave us the chance to design the new premises ourselves so we could have it exactly as we wanted,” said Eddy. “Those premises lasted us from 1982 until our current move in 2012.” Over the years Eddy took on a number of business partners but it was his partnership with four other retailers in the formation

of The WoolSet around 25 years ago for which he is best known. “I enjoyed being an independent retailer but finally decided the time was right to get together a group – one that focussed on wool carpet,” Eddy said. “I went around to a number of retailers, whom I believed were the best in the state, and discussed the idea. These included Don Currie Carpets in St Kilda and Slocum Floorcoverings in Eltham. Together we built up the group so that, today, we have around 20 members in three states – Victoria, Tasmania and southern NSW*. Wall T Wall has always had an enviable reputation and since its earliest days the business has just kept getting

stronger. Once it moved into its purpose built premises in 1982, it never looked back. “We were so well established by that point our clientele was 95% previous clients or recommendations and only 2% Yellow Pages advertising and 3% passing trade,” said Eddy. In the years since 1982, Wall T Wall has seen a number of business partners come and go. Eddy officially retired five years ago after 51 years in the industry, although he still works one day a week. Two years ago, Eddy’s son-in-law Tony Nicholson bought the business, returning it to family ownership with Tony, Eddy, Eddy’s daughter Pam and Tony’s son, Tom, all working there.

Pam Nissner is an interior design specialist and, through her expertise in that field, the business is able to offer clients interior decorating advice as well as blinds, curtains, wallpaper, lamps and other interior accessories. Wall T Wall is also looking to expand into ceramics. On 1 October, Wall T Wall became the first Victoria member of the Australian Floor Style group, an independent flooring retailer’s co-operative. “It was a decision that was very simple and easy to make without changing anything about my business structure,” explained Tony Nicholson. * The WoolSet has recently been acquired by Choices.

New Kas collection Following its first successful collaboration, Kas Australia has again used its popular designs and bold colour palettes to create a fantastic new range of rugs. This latest collection consists of six designs focusing on the patterns that have made Kas’ co-ordinating accessories and soft furnishings an international success. It boldly displays

the Kas signature style in six striking hand tufted woollen rugs – Belize, Maya, Pascal, Rapport, Scythia and Semra. With the designs taken directly from the inspiring Kas cushion and bedlinen ranges, these statement rugs offer everything from the more subtle and sophisticated Kas colour combinations to the most brightly coloured striking floral designs.

Cavalier Bremworth’s ‘hot’ looking stand at Grand Designs in Sydney in October, attracted a great deal of attention from designers and the general public. “We put our new product, Foss, down on the floor,” said Marketing Manager Desiree Keown. “This is the first new range to come out with our Flashbac recycled carpet backing. “There was very strong interest in both the product and the backing – with everyone commenting on how soft Foss felt, even without underlay.” Foss is a step up in comfort and luxury for Cavalier Bremworth with the use of chunky felted wool on top and the company’s worldfirst Flashbac recycled wool backing on the bottom.

Redbook green with Ultra Soft Redbook green carpets with Ultra Soft technology are now even softer and bring a new level of comfort to floors. Made with triexta, Redbook green with Ultra Soft is one of the most innovative carpets today. Not only ultra soft, it is ultra durable too. Unlike some other fibre types, the kinked molecular structure of the triexta fibre means Redbook green Ultra Soft will continue to bounce back into shape even after years of foot traffic. And now Redbook green Ultra Soft products have a new colour palette including some bold new colours. Redbook green Ultra Soft carpets are made in

Australia. This means they carry genuine Australian warranties supported with after sales service that can be relied on. Redbook green Ultra Soft warranties have been upgraded with new lifetime stain and soil protection warranties with new full pet warranties and 25 year colourfast and wear warranties.* Redbook green Ultra Soft is manufactured using Sorona polymer, made from 37% natural corn sugar** so it is soft on the environment too. * Conditions Apply ** DuPont™ Sorona® contains 37% renewably sourced ingredients by weight.

“Foss is a chunky ribbed loop pile, which we expect to have huge appeal to those who love tactile carpets and enjoy walking barefoot,” said Desiree. “It’s incredibly soft and inviting with a very relaxed style. This carpet will look terrific everywhere – from the beach to the apartment. “The wow factor for this extra heavy weight carpet is equally matched by its durability.”

Bespoke carpet for high rollers and VIPs Following its multi-million dollar refurbishment and expansion, the Star Sydney Casino and Hotel (formerly Star City) has become Australia’s most exciting new entertainment precinct. Signature Floorconcepts was commissioned to collaborate with the Star’s designer, Laurance Lee Associates, to create beautiful and luxurious custom made woven carpets for various spaces in the casino and five star hotel. Anthony O’Halloran, Director of Signature Floors said: “It was a great privilege to be selected by Laurance Lee Associates, who are at the forefront of innovation and design to work on this project. The Star is such an iconic venue

in Sydney, and they wanted to ensure that the floorcoverings were provided by an Australian company, which has a well established history of supplying stylish and innovative floorcoverings.” The Signature carpet designers worked in conjunction with Laurance Lee Associates on a very complex brief. Each space had its own specific designs and requirements, from a luxurious look and feel in the VIP rooms to sophistication and durability for the high traffic main casino floor. One of the most prestigious spaces, the Star’s VIP gaming rooms, required a luxurious and elegant carpet to match the world class entertainment space. Signature Floorconcepts designed a carpet that perfectly complemented the architectural design features and unique furnishings of the room, producing a textured wool carpet, beautifully hand carved in soft violets and neutrals. For the high-rollers’ gaming area, Signature Floorconcepts created a product with an oriental twist, featuring rich browns and soft, warm beiges in line with the sophistication and modern feel of the Star, appealing to its international clientele. The unique architectural feature of curved corridors of the VIP suites meant

that the floorcovering designs and patterns needed to suit the sweeping spaces, whilst complementing the interior designs of the VIP gaming rooms. A carpet in rich chocolate browns, with specs of soft violets and warm natural hues was created by the Signature carpet specialists. Signature Floorconcepts’ woven carpets are manufactured with 80% international wool blend of New Zealand and British wool. New Zealand wool has a soft, luxurious wholesome feel and retains colour significantly well. This wool, combined with the coarseness of British wool, produced an exceptional hardwearing, cleanable, soft under foot custom product.

“To withstand the harshest of Australian sun, every Australian home needs carpet treated with the exclusive ColourGard fade protection treatment” said Robert Herten, Company Director of Signature Floors. “Since ColourGard was launched eight years ago, Signature Floors hasn’t had any fading warranty claims.” This is why Signature Floors has been working on the development of an extensive collection of ColourGard carpets with fade protection. From bright and deep coloured carpets to patterned and printed carpets, with 18 different ranges and up to 16 different colourways per range to choose from, the company believes there is a stylish solution for every household. More than a surface treatment, the active ingredient in ColourGard is physically bonded to the carpet yarn as part of the colouring process so no amount of sun or cleaning will diminish its impressive performance. ColourGard offers permanent UV protection when in direct contact with sunlight. Colourgard has also been tested and approved by the independent testing laboratory Australian Wool Testing Authority (AWTA).

Tarkett scores Gold for the environment Final GreenTagCert certification has been completed on key product ranges within the Tarkett homogenous product group. Adding to the unique features of phthalate free and VOC emissions below detectable levels, this achievement confirms the environmental credentials and continual innovation of Tarkett flooring products. Tarkett’s iQ and Premium homogenous products received GreenTag Gold LCARate certification and importantly, a GreenRate Level A, scoring maximum points when specified on GBCA Green Star projects. “Tarkett has a strong commitment to eco-design in all products, as shown

in our recent innovations of phthalate free plasticisers and reduction of VOC emissions below detectable levels in all of our homogenous products,” said Stuart Glase, Commercial Marketing Manager, Tarkett Australia. Tarkett’s environmental commitment begins at all of its manufacturing sites where a consistent world class manufacturing policy is responsible for high levels of recycling and removal of emissions to the environment. The result is a high quality flooring that requires minimal chemical use in maintenance, provides healthy work environments and is 100% recyclable at the end of its life.

Melbourne's Royal Children’s Hospital takes out top award The new Royal Children’s Hospital in Parkville, Victoria, designed by Bates Smart Architects in partnership with Billard Leece, has won the BPN Public Buildings and Urban Design 2012 sustainability award. The award, sponsored by the Vinyl Council of Australia, was given to the project for achieving "the highest sustainability levels ever in a healthcare project in Australia", BPN said. VCA member, Armstrong World Industries was also delighted that this $1.1 billion project won the award as it used Armstrong vinyl flooring throughout. Cited as one of the hospital's key initiatives, the flooring

24 Flooring Dec 2012/Jan 2013

contains recycled postconsumer and post-industrial recycled vinyl. Armstrong also recycled its own factory waste into the new product. Armstrong products have since been independently certified as Best Environmental Practice PVC products. The 2012 BPN Sustainability Awards winners were announced at a gala dinner in Sydney on 8 November, 2012. Now in its sixth year, the Sustainability Awards recognise the pinnacle of sustainable building practice in Australia. The judges praised the collaborative efforts of the hospital's design team, the carefully considered

approach to social sustainability and nature as well as the psychology of healing a child when designing the building. "The result is all about wellbeing, rather than ‘illbeing’, creating a curing environment that embraces the psychology of healing a child," BPN said. “The project has set sustainability criteria at levels never achieved by any previous healthcare in Australia and has delivered the ‘greenest’ hospital in Australia.” Billard Leece Partnership and Bates Smart Architects also won the Best of the Best Award for the new hospital, the top honour for the 2012 Awards.

Laminate

A real wood feel Golden Field Corporation recently released its new Bordeaux range – a truly European laminate floor that features real wood feel technology with wire-brushed effect to emphasise the wood grain. The matt finish in up-to-date European colours designed to meet the latest in European fashion requirements. The floor comes with a two sided coloured V-bevel on the long side utilising the

Angle Loc installation system by Välinge. Tony Carr –National Sales Manager for Golden Field Corporation said: “Bordeaux is 100% anti-bacterial and it complies with JIS2801:2101 standards, which mean bacteria and other microbes have no place to grow, due to the high resistant coating and the closed edges.” Bordeaux carries an AC4 rating suitable for commercial installations.

Experimental design trends in laminate flooring Laminate flooring has always been at the forefront of modern flooring design and, in 2013, it will embrace its design standards once again. Experimental, trendsetting timber looks with blue or green coloured cracks and branches are all the rage for the coming season in Europe. Coniferous woods like larch and pine are mainly used but deciduous woods like ash and elm are also popular. They come in their natural, light and partly glazed look as well as those textures with unusual colours, which are synonymous with a new experimental design. Bold colours – bold designs. Oak may not be coniferous but it's always popular with designers. No other laminate flooring decor offers as many different possibilities as this expressive timber that has been a dominant mainstream player over the last few years and will continue to be so. Natural, light shades, very rustic textures, patinated, subtly altered vintage looks – oak offers an impressive range of possible designs. But again: bold colours are

26 Flooring Dec 2012/Jan 2013

called for – dark, grey, almost black oak decors are the new experimental character in this traditional decor segment of the European laminate flooring industry. Quite apart from digitally printed surfaces, creative decors will include more modified, coloured and altered wooden surfaces than ever before. The ways in which overlays can be processed using modern print techniques and press plates are hugely diverse. They enhance the colourings and textures of the laminate flooring decor or produce the desired contrast. In any case, the effect is always natural and authentic, suits the current interior style and meets the desires of the architect and end user. This trend is picked up by matt floors as well as furniture. The board formats of laminate flooring are more extreme than ever before. The long rustic board with all-over print is THE trendsetter of the moment, giving the room a generous, spacious look. Real or fake V joints further reinforce this look.

Aloha!

Above: Choices Chairman, Shane and Ann Chillingworth. Left: Airstep golf day. Below left and right: Invista and Dunlop co-sponsored the lawn bowls competition. (2 pics) Bottom: Visiting the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbour.

The Choices Magic Carpet Ride (MCR) was recently held in Hawaii, at the beautiful JW Marriott Ihilani Resort and Spa, on the main island of Oahu. This was the first MCR held under the Choices banner and was a fantastic success, attracting nearly 340 Choices members, suppliers and their families. Once again, the group was blessed with wonderful weather, a stunning resort, great shopping and, for 250 participants, a very moving tour of Pearl Harbour and the USS Missouri. During the week attendees also enjoyed themed dinners, both at the resort and offsite at the Pacific Aviation Museum, located at Pearl Harbour. Hawaii provided so many different things to experience and enjoy. A group of around 10 members and their wives hired Harley Davidsons to cruise around the island, whilemany took the opportunity to enjoy a night at Aloha Stadium to watch a College Football game. As always, Airstep hosted its ever popular golf day, with over 70 golfers teeing off at the picturesque Ko Olina Golf Course. The Ambrose event was won by Peter Treasure (Port Macquarie), Jack Swinton (Swintons), Steve Fox

(Leongatha) and Darren Goss (Signature). Jason Wedrien (Beaulieu) won Longest Drive of the Day, with David Goodbody (Godfrey Hirst) celebrating Nearest the Pin. The other major sports event of the week saw Invista and Dunlop co-sponsor the Lawn Bowls Tournament, which was hotly contested by over 100 participants. While the competition was extremely close, the winners for the morning session were Sean and Anna-Mari O’Donovan (Classic Flooring) with Peter and Suzanne Treasure (Port Macquarie). The afternoon winners were Shona and Andrew Priest (Newfurn), with Kat and John Droulers (Media Circus). Congratulations to all the winners! Choices would like to thank the sponsors of these two sporting events: Airstep, Invista and Dunlop for two fantastic days, which were thoroughly enjoyed by the participants. A big thanks must also go to each of the preferred suppliers who sponsored the Magic Carpet Ride. This event wouldn’t be possible without their support. Hawaii provided a magical destination for the Magic Carpet Ride, and the event is sure to return there in the future.

Business

Work or waste?

Why being poorly organised can leave your bank account empty. Following instructions. Some people seem to love doing it, some people spend their whole lives avoiding having to do it. But love them or hate them, failing to follow instructions and being poorly organised makes a BIG difference on your bottom line. Being poorly organised in your business is often a reflection of your personality as an owner. And sure, real control is an illusion but being out of control has real costs. By real costs I am not talking about some philosophical statement, I mean the impact on your bank account. Upon your take home profit. So, where is your bank account taking the hits?

Chokepoint 1 - Rework

It may only seem a small thing at the time. Just another stuff up in a long line of small but annoying problems. But every piece of rework you are doing is slashing into your margins. Think about it. All of a sudden you have to put in up to double the labour effort to deliver the same thing. And if wages are a major part in your cost of business (I am

assuming that you aren't employing robots) then there goes your profit. Most likely all your profit for that work. Now before you relax and think well s*** happens, imagine what would have happened if the work was done right. You could have now applied the labour against more work, which would have allowed you to make profit a second time. It’s called opportunity cost, and you are paying it without even realising it.

Chokepoint 2 - Disorganisation tax Whether they are major repairs required on equipment because they weren't maintained on time, or extra paperwork that had to be created to make credit notes, new dispatch paperwork or reordering, or, maybe it is having to shift stock at cost because no one was managing your stock right or paying the tax department a fine because your financials are behind – it is all money you have lost for no reason other than you aren't in control.

Chokepoint 3 - Business lost This can range from customer concessions and discounts (let’s be real – bribes you use to pay off your mistakes), to handling complaints and backpedalling in front of clients trying to justify why they should use you again. Then there is considering the impact of bad will (when people moan and bitch to anyone that will listen about how bad you are). These cost you sales and undermine everything that you are trying to do. So, what can you do about it? Answer: Raise your standards and start a new crusade!

Step 1 - Look back

Have a look across the last three month’s worth of sales to see where the problems are. If you've got a paper trail because you are proactively looking for the errors, use it. Otherwise you might have to rake up the memories of those problems and horror stories that have stuck in your mind and those of your team.

Step 2 - Find the chart toppers List the top three errors. Get an A4 sheet of paper and write the name of the problem on the top of each page. You've got to know your enemy.

Step 3 - Think ahead

Grab one problem and write down every single reason you can think of why this problem is happening. Walk around and talk to your team and find out their opinion. There is normally more than one reason (otherwise you would have fixed it by now, right?). Write down every

30 Flooring Dec 2012/Jan 2013

reason and then what needs to happen to fix that reason.

Step 4 - Build or fix

Now if you have written down a reason like "must remember to look for this before they order" cross it out and make it something real and tangible, more like "Update the incoming order phone script to ask ...". You need to think of a solution that you can embed in your systems (if you haven't got any systems or procedures and want to get started just email me on stevesmit@ realityconsulting.com.au and ask for "7 Steps To Getting Organised in Your Business").

Step 5 - Hold someone to account Find out who is responsible for making these changes happen. Let them know what needs to happen and let them know that they will be responsible for reporting these problems. Make it part of their job description.

Step 6 - Watch it like a hawk Now, get them to come back with a weekly, fortnightly or monthly report (whatever works), with a tally of how many times the problem has happened AND what actions have happened to stop these problems that have slipped through the net.

The fashion in tiles Beaumont Tiles recently attended Cersaie in Bologna, Italy – the most prestigious tile, ceramic, and bathroomware convention in the world. A truly international exhibition, Cersaie 2012 included more than 1,000 exhibitors and saw attendance by industry figures from 140 countries throughout its five day duration including Beaumont Tiles Managing Director, Bob Beaumont. “There is no comparison between Cersaie and other industry conventions; with more than 20 halls filled with products we have the opportunity to identify trends and be privy to industry and technological advancement, and the endless possibilities

they provide,” said Bob Beaumont Tiles Strategic Designer, Christie Wood said: “The ability to remain on the forefront of home design trends will always remain a priority for Beaumont Tiles. Opportunities like Cersaie not only allow us to purchase quality product and introduce it into our collection, but adapt and modify products we see to suit the Australian market and, more particularly, our customers’ needs whilst keeping them on trend.” Trends that we can expect to see grow or be introduced into Australia throughout 2013 include:

grout and glitter filled designs, it is clear that the bling trend is here to stay. This trend will steadily increase in popularity with an availability of options fairing from subtle elegance to attention grabbing extravagance.

From exorbitant Swarovski encrusted tiles to more applicable options like sparkly

A prominent trend for several years now, technological advances have seen the resemblance between real wood and wood look tiles become practically impossible to fault, offering customers the look and durability of wood without any of the time consuming care requirements.

Distressed timber

An emerging trend is the appearance of distressed timber and furniture. Whilst not likely to overwhelm a large cross-section of the market, the trend is certain to be a winner to those who are fans of the look depicting distressed, recycled timber flooring.

The benefits of such a product lie within its affordable price, and the ease at which it can be maintained.

Mosaic

An applicable trend for most customers, mosaic has been seen to have been used in several ways. In contrast to Australia where the trend is often used for subtle feature, mosaics will start to be used in a much bolder way from application across whole walls to artistic murals. High definition digital printing and glazing techniques are being refined further, making it possible to produce photographically perfect pictures on a tile. Iconic scenes such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge have been seen as a popular offering alongside more applicable options such as a row of books.

A trend revival, bevelled tiles were aplenty at the convention. Traditionally a smaller tile in ivory or white,

The endless possibilities tiles bring has seen apprehension be replaced with excitement as a strong trend of full wall tiling emerges. This includes the usage of tiles on both interior and exterior walls to create everything from eyecatching features, to simplistic and functional splashbacks for outdoor kitchens.

The demands for a tile collection that can be carried from inside the home to outside have been heard loud and clear, with several factories at Cersaie demonstrating products of this nature.

Demise of industrial look

A particularly surprising observation was the undoubtable demise of the ‘industrial’ trend with preference moving into lighter colours with a prominence of earth tones.

Award winning LVP now in Australia An innovative commercial floating luxury vinyl plank has been released in Australia by Shaw Contract Group just months after it earned a Best of NeoCon Gold 2012 award in the hard surface category. NeoCon is North America's largest design exposition and conference for commercial interiors and attracted more than 40,000 architecture and design professionals. “Versatile Quiet Cover with In*Step is the ultimate solution for commercial flooring contractors because it can be installed quickly without the use of adhesive and has high moisture tolerances,” said Paul McCosker, General Manager, Shaw Contract Group Australia (SCGA).

“Quiet Cover solves so many problems that our commercial customers regularly face on job sites. So often slabs are too wet for normal glue down installation, and moisture mitigation is an expensive proposition. Quiet Cover requires less subfloor preparation because it can go directly over concrete slabs even when they test up to 95% RH.

“Another positive aspect of Quiet Cover is that the building can be occupied immediately after installation, ensuring faster turnaround and better returns for building owners through reduced downtime. “Quiet Cover can be walked on as soon as it’s installed because there is no adhesive that has to set,” explained Paul. “In this competitive economic climate, time is money, and Quiet Cover allows your customers to get back to business faster.” Planks are locked together using the innovative In*Step tongue and groove design. This four-sided profile makes installation of Quiet Cover easy and ensures a tight fit between seams that won’t separate under commercial traffic. “Some other floating plank products have a tendency to ‘walk’ or move in commercial spaces but the In*Step profile

is precision milled to keep planks secure,” said Paul. “In addition, Quiet Cover contains an innovative silencing layer that reduces sound transfer – even without an underlay.” Quiet Cover is designed for use in retail, office, apartment and education applications and the colour palette and patterns reflect current trends within these segments. It offers a range of wide plank wood visuals with unique grain textures authentic to each pattern. Rustic styles have heavier embossing, where traditional patterns have a more subtle texture. Quiet Cover is manufactured from 72% recycled material, 39% of which is made from postconsumer material. All products are FloorScore certified for low VOC emissions and have an added antimicrobial to defend against bacteria and fungi.

Prevent scratches and gouges If you are tired of seeing your beautifully finished floors gouged and scratched within days of laying or repolishing, then Flexi-felt Clear products could be the answer. Developed in the USA where they have taken the market by storm, they are now vavailable in Australia and New Zealand. The secret is in the revolutionary new adhesive which lasts indefinitely, plus the 100% pure wool felt pads and the clear sleeves for domestic use, which not

only fit most sizes of round or square legs but also prevent damage to furniture. For those odd sizes, pre cut stick-on pads are also available. Larger Flexi-felt pads are also available for odd sizes or commercial applications. Not only do these pads prevent damage but they also reduce noise by up to 90% and enable older or mobility impaired persons to move furniture without major effort, making them ideal for schools, restaurants, nursing

homes, hostels and retirement villages. Nick Kelvin of Eneskay Distributors, who have been appointed as sole Australasian

importers, is really excited about the product which he says has many applications for residential, commercial or institutional use.

New ride-on shot blaster A new ride-on shot blaster from Kennards Concrete Care reduces operator fatigue and increases productivity in large areas such as car parks, warehouses, industrial plants and airport runways. The unit strips, cleans and profiles simultaneously while covering up to 325 m2 per hour. Powered by a 49hp diesel engine and with a 40cm (16in) blast width, it will remove paint, rust and mill scale from steel; paint and markings from asphalt; and prepare concrete for re-coating or application of overlays. The blast width can

be adapted to remove line markings. Airborne dust and contaminants are collected and contained through a 2600 cfm on-board vacuum system, with two dust bags which are easy to replace when full. A rear access panel facilitates the changing of vacuum filters, while the vacuum’s reverse-pulse cartridge cleaning feature helps prolong filter life. This is one of a range of self-propelled and pushmodel shot blasters that can be hired from Kennards Concrete Care.

Flowfresh gives germs the slip Flowcrete’s Flowfresh flooring system uses the natural power of silver to fight bacteria at ground level. The ideal choice for Australia’s food and beverage industries in general, Flowfresh is a seamless polyurethane resin floor finish, which contains the Polygiene compound to aid hygiene performance across flooring areas in the industry. A special additive in Polygiene is locked into the Flowfresh resin matrix and emits silver ions, which kill bacteria. Polygiene is capable of controlling salmonella, E-coli and many other types of bacteria and yeast on contact – a major step forward

in fighting the spread of potentially harmful bugs. David McNeece, Business Development Manager of Flowcrete Australia Pty Ltd, which has offices in Queensland and New South Wales, said: “Flowcrete’s Flowfresh seamless resin polyurethane flooring is perfect for the tough and uncompromising demands of the food and beverage processing sector. “It is also ideal for use in areas including dairies, bakeries, industrial kitchens and catering units, as well as wet and dry processing zones.

“Flowfresh offers excellent slip, wear, temperature and chemical resistance, and is suitable for steam and hot water cleaning processes. It

ultimately helps diary, food and drink processors achieve high sanitation standards and the maximum in cleanability and hygiene.”

Polished concrete is considered a good sustainable design flooring choice as it makes use of the already present concrete material. Polishing the exposed concrete eliminates the energy and material used in applying a floorcovering such as carpet or vinyl, making it an environmentally friendly option, which overall helps reduce a buildings carbon footprint. However, being able to create a polished concrete floor is not easy. It is a long process, which takes years of training and knowledge to master. Now, the process of polishing concrete has become much easier, with HTC offering their innovative Training Academies. First held at the HTC headquarters in Sweden, the training academy was designed to teach grinding machine operators the fundamental process in creating the perfect polished concrete surfaces.

Since the first HTC Academy in Sweden this process of educating operators has made its way down to Australia. For the last 10 years, Tyrolit Australia has been conducting academy programs teaching new and existing participants the grinding techniques behind their HTC machines; how to correctly service and maintain their machines; and offering the opportunity to become an accredited HTC operator. The academy is run over two days with both days including theory and practice. A large part of the course is devoted to the HTC Superfloor method of polishing and maintaining concrete. The course includes both theory and hands-on training with all participants given the opportunity to try out the latest floor grinding equipment available, which simplifies and streamlines the grinding process. The HTC Academies are run yearly with one in most Australian states.

Rapid yet simple moisture control system Uzin has long been known for pioneering new and exciting products to help support flooring contractors on job sites across the country. Continuing to act as an innovator of high quality yet affordable products Uzin has launched Uzin L3 Gold Moisture Control system, specially developed to improve Uzin L3 Gold in areas of high moisture, up to 90% RH. When installing flooring in areas where moisture can be a problem, flooring contractors no longer have to apply a damp proof membrane to the floor, then prime and then install the levelling compound. With the exceptionally simple UZIN L3 Gold Moisture Control System, fitters just have to follow three uncomplicated steps – prime the floor, mix and apply the bag and bottle levelling compound and finally apply the adhesive. Job done in only four hours.

Prime

Shake container thoroughly. Apply one coat of Uzin L3 Gold System primer using a foam roller and allow to dry for one hour.

Level

Mix the bag and bottle components Uzin L3 Gold Powder and the new UZIN L3 Gold Moisture Control liquid, before installing the levelling compound. Once the product is fully mixed it can be applied over the floor using a steel trowel at depths from 3 mm to 5 mm. The Uzin L3 Gold Moisture Control levelling compound

is ready to accept most floor coverings within two hours.

Install

Choose a suitable adhesive for installing the floor covering such as Uzin KE 2000 S for carpets, PVC, vinyl or lino. Apply evenly onto the substrate using a suitable notched trowel. Install covering, rub down over the whole area and after approximately 20 minutes, rub down again or roll. Uzin KE 2000 S is fitter friendly with excellent grab performance and is cost effective with a great coverage of up to 56 m2.

Complete

This exceptionally simple and easy use system means installing can be completed in one day. The rapid system is not only extremely affordable when compared to the traditional system at price per square metre but also saves time and money on labour costs. Due to increasing regulation regarding duty of care and allergies to latex, the Uzin L3 Gold Moisture Control system is also ideal for use in sensitive environments such as hospitals because the Uzin L3 Gold products are ammonia and latex free. The system can also applied over old waterproof adhesives residues such as bitumen. It is easy to sand down, flows exceptionally and has a high compressive strength of 25 N. 100 years of experience, innovation, research and development have made Uzin a leading company for floor installation, sealing and care systems.
