The Art of Carpet as a Fashion Statement
Article by the CIAL
In the world of interior design, where the pendulum swings between minimalism and maximalism, carpet is making a bold statement for those who dare to indulge in the richness of texture, colour, and comfort. As we delve into the vibrant world of carpet, we explore not just its aesthetic appeal but also its quality and environmental credentials, proving that luxury and sustainability can indeed coexist beautifully.
Maximalism: A Celebration of Abundance
Maximalism, in stark contrast to the austere lines of minimalism, invites an abundance of colours, patterns, and textures into our living spaces. It's a design philosophy that embraces the idea that more is more. Here, carpet transcends its traditional role as mere floor covering to become a canvas for self-expression. Imagine walking into a room where the carpet isn't just a backdrop but a vibrant tapestry that tells a story, reflects personality, and invites touch.
It's a design philosophy that embraces the idea that more is more.
Maximalist carpets provide not only visual interest but also tactile comfort underfoot, turning every step into a sensory experience. This comfort extends beyond the superficial; carpets with rich textures offer thermal benefits, keeping homes warmer in winter and cooler in summer, thus contributing to energy savings. In an era where energy efficiency is paramount, the plushness of maximalist carpets is not just a luxury but a practical choice.
Feature All Things Carpet
Quality Assured: The ACCS Seal of Approval
When we talk about quality in carpet, the Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS) stands as a beacon of excellence. ACCS certification is a testament to the durability and appearance retention of carpets, offering consumers peace of mind about their investment. The scheme uses a star-rating system where carpets can achieve up to six stars for residential use and four for commercial, ensuring that what you are buying is not just beautiful but built to last.
Maximalist carpets provide not only visual interest but also tactile comfort underfoot, turning every step into a sensory experience.
ACCS-certified carpets undergo rigorous testing for fibre wear, colour fastness, and overall resilience, ensuring they maintain their sumptuous look and feel over time. This certification process is crucial for those who view carpet not just as a decor choice but as a long-term commitment to their home's aesthetic and comfort. By choosing ACCScertified carpets, you are not only opting for quality but also aligning with a standard that elevates your home's interior to match your maximalist vision.
Sustainability at the Fibers: The ECS Advantage
In the dialogue of sustainable living, the Environmental Certification Scheme (ECS) for carpets plays a pivotal role. ECS goes beyond mere quality to assess the environmental footprint of carpets from manufacturing to disposal. With its tiered certification levels, ECS ensures that carpets are not just eco-friendly but also contribute positively to indoor air quality, resource management, and energy use.
Carpets certified under ECS use materials that are kinder to the environment. Whether it is wool from sustainable farms or fibres made from recycled materials like fishing nets or plastic bottles, these carpets reduce the demand on virgin resources and lower waste. The scheme also evaluates the manufacturing process, ensuring low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, which is crucial for maintaining healthy indoor environments.
Moreover, ECS looks at the end-of-life management of carpets, promoting recycling and repurposing, which aligns perfectly with the ethos of maximalism — where every element in the design has a purpose, even at the end of its lifecycle. This approach not only helps in conserving resources but also in crafting a narrative where luxury does not come at the expense of our planet.
Feature All Things Carpet
The Maximalist Manifesto in Carpet Design
Maximalism in carpet design is not just about filling spaces with patterns and colours; it is about creating environments that resonate with personal style and comfort. It's about choosing carpets that serve as art pieces, that tell stories, and that add layers of warmth and texture to a space. With the backdrop of quality assurance from ACCS and the environmental stewardship from ECS, these carpets are not just floors; they are foundations for a lifestyle that values beauty, longevity, and ecological responsibility.
ACCS-certified carpets undergo rigorous testing for fibre wear, colour fastness, and overall resilience, ensuring they maintain their sumptuous look and feel over time.
In conclusion, as we look to the future of interior decoration, carpet stands out as a compelling choice for those embracing maximalism. It's a declaration that our homes can be both a sanctuary of comfort and a statement of environmental consciousness.
By selecting carpets that are rich in design, certified for quality, and sustainable in nature, we are not just decorating our spaces; we are making a statement about who we are, what we value, and how we wish to live. In the world of flooring, let maximalism be your guide to a home that is as rich in character as it is in comfort.
This is the era where your floor can be as luxurious and expressive as your imagination allows, all while treading lightly on our beautiful Earth.

The team at Bremworth believe in creating beautiful spaces that do not just look good but feel good too. That is why they are extremely proud to be certified as Declare Living Building Council (LBC) Red List Free across all their carpet ranges.
Declare screens products against the Living Building Challenge Red List—materials and chemicals known to harm both people and the planet.
Why should you look out for the Declare Label?
Think of Declare like a nutrition label for your home. It offers transparency on the ingredients that go into our carpets, giving you more peace of mind.
It is designed to help specifiers quickly identify products that meet their project requirements. Declare labels disclose all intentionally added ingredients and residuals at or above 100ppm (0.01%) present in the final product by weight. Each ingredient must be reported with a chemical name, CAS number, and percentage or percentage range.
Red List free
Declare screens a product’s ingredients directly against the Living Building Challenge (LBC) Red List, saving project teams from
the arduous task of vetting products by hand. The LBC Red List contains the ‘worst in class’ materials, chemicals and elements known to pose serious risks to human health and the greater ecosystem that may be present in the building products industry.
Designed with you in mind
Bremworth carpets are made with 100% New Zealand wool and manufactured with quality and wellness in mind. Their Declare certification means their products meet the rigorous standards of eco-conscious design accreditations like Greenstar, Living Building Challenge, LEED, and WELL.
Crafted feels different
Crafted from 100% New Zealand wool, Bremworth carpets celebrate not only design but also sustainability. Wool’s natural
resilience makes it a premium choice for those seeking durability and comfort. Beyond its luxurious feel, wool is hypoallergenic, fireresistant, and easy to maintain. The natural properties of wool means that it repels static, regulates humidity, and is naturally resistant to soil and stains— qualities that make it both beautiful and practical.
Bremworth has launched four new collections this year, packed with a lot of new and exciting colour as well as a range of timeless neutrals. Āhuru’s stunning colour palette was curated in collaboration with leading New Zealand designers, with each colour within this collection being inspired by nature in some way. In addition to some soft neutrals, Te Aroha features stunning rich mineral tones such as Orchid, Brass, Copper and Kaimai. Aoraki, on the other hand, offers a harmonious colour palette of muted tones, each incorporating multiple colours twisted together to form a subtle contrasting effect.
Feel the care that has gone into every fibre with these exciting new collections from Bremworth. Step with confidence, knowing your flooring has been meticulously crafted for living.

Carpet - Comfortable, stylish luxury you can walk on
Evolving colour trends have seen more consumers looking for neutral and earthy tones as their colour preference in carpets. The cooler greys of preceding years have been replaced with beige, light greys, taupes, rich warm brown tones, and even muted greens to create a natural aesthetic, inspired by nature. These natural tones paired with the dark and earthy furniture trends bring a sense of calm, comfort, warmth, and drama to any room.
Second to colour is texture. Australian FloorStyle members are finding that wool carpets are making a comeback and if consumers can’t afford wool, they are opting for a wool look alike in one of the many synthetic yarn offerings available on the market. Berber Loop and Ribbed or Sisal Carpets with varying pile heights are an example of the styles increasing in popularity because of this trend and the desire for a more textured, three-dimensional look to add depth and interest to your room. In saying that there is still and always will be a demand for plush and twist pile carpets with high piles for that luxurious, plush underfoot feel.
Today’s conscious consumers are also focusing on sustainability when choosing carpets, with consideration to the impact on the environment. Again, wool being a natural fibre gets a tick but there are also many carpets made from recycled fibres that are eco-friendly and help reduce waste and landfill.
Increased sales
As a group Australian FloorStyle has found that their sales with Victoria Carpets have increased and will continue to grow, with members really getting behind and embracing
them because of their increased support and product offerings. Add to the fact that Victoria Carpets are the only Carpet manufacturer in Australia that produces their own yarn, with a spinning plant in Bendigo, members who have toured their facilities and viewed the process said it makes their job even easier.
Another Carpet supplier the group has seen significant growth with is Belgotex Floorcoverings. With an increased mix of product offerings and local support to all members there has been a steady incline in their sales. Belgotex manufacture their Wool Carpets in Melbourne.
A solution for every budget and décor With so many styles, colours, textures, and fibres to choose from the consumer is bound to find their perfect flooring solution from one of the locally owned Australian FloorStyle Members. Loop piles, Cut Piles, Cut and Loops, Wool, Wool Blends, Synthetics including Solution Dyed Nylon, Solution Dyed Polyester, Solution Dyed Polypropylene, Trixeta and more, the consumer has a plethora of options.

Adding a new dimension to the Australian design landscape
Gibbon Architectural are extremely excited to introduce the SynSisal Carpet Collection to the Australian market as a sisal-style flatwoven broadloom carpet which can be used in commercial, hospitality and residential spaces.
SynSisal, a premium sustainable flooring solution, has officially arrived in Australia through its exclusive partnership between Curran Global and Gibbon Architectural. This eco-friendly, durable product is set to add a new dimension to the Australian design landscape with its blend of natural beauty and environmental attributes.
Jeff Curran - founder of Curran US and sisalcarpet.com - created SynSisal out of a common customer need: “I love the look of sisal, but I want something soft, durable, and easy to clean.” Conscious of sisal’s hardwearing qualities but the challenges this natural fibre can present in terms of maintenance, Jeff Curran decided to develop a sisal-style carpet in a hard-wearing nylon that would be designed to perform in almost any space.
Sustainability was also top of mind, and for that reason SynSisal was created using ECONYL 100% regenerated nylon yarns which are sourced from recycled materials such as old carpets and ocean waste.
The result? A stain-resistant, contract grade solution that maintains the sought after look of sisal - perfect for any space due to its solution dyed yarn. Taking the inspiration of natural sisal’s classic weaves with their woven, textured appearance, SynSisal also has a softer feel and durable weave, giving the carpet a more refined look while still maintaining a robust, natural feel.
Its heavy contract grade flatwoven construction is designed for environments such as hotels, offices, and retail outlets – but also beautiful enough to be used in residential spaces. The aesthetic is typically rustic and earthy, making it a popular choice for spaces with natural and organic interiors.
The SynSisal Collection was designed to have the look, texture, and sustainability
of sisal, while its construction in solution dyed regenerated nylon provides excellent resistance to wear and tear and is easier to clean and maintain.
Four weaves – Astoria, Langley, Medina and Winthrop are stocked by Gibbon Architectural in four colours – Bark, Honey, Mink and Mesquite.
SynSisal combines the look of natural sisal with the benefits of synthetic fibres, offering a durable, low-maintenance solution for clients who want the natural, woven aesthetic but with more practical advantages for durability and maintenance.
Gibbon Architectural supplies commercial carpets, carpet tiles and custom rugs nationally to the A&D community which are fit for purpose in commercial, hospitality, retail, multi-residential and residential spaces.

Safeguard your project and reputation
Carpet protection is more than an expense—it's an investment in your project’s success and your reputation. Whether it’s heavy foot traffic, construction debris, or liquid spills, unprotected carpets can result in costly repairs and unhappy clients. Two popular solutions, Protecta Weave and Protecta Film Carpet, cater to different needs.
Protecta Weave: Durable protection for projects of any length
Ideal for synthetic, nylon, or wool carpets, Protecta Weave shields against dirt, paint spills, and construction debris without relying on adhesives. Its versatility makes it a top choice for projects of any length. For secure installation, use hook tape sections or two-tape technique to attach Protecta Weave securely to skirting boards, minimising residue and ensuring durability.
Protecta
Film Carpet: Quick, reliable protection
Designed for synthetic and nylon carpets or tiles (not suitable for wool carpets), Protecta Film Carpet is ideal for short-term projects up to 30 days. Its self-adhesive, waterresistant film stays in place, offering visibility of the carpet underneath while preventing slips and trips.
Use the Protecta Film applicator for fast and effortless application.

Improve Your Business – Address delays in processes
Article by Chris Ogden
In recent articles, I have discussed improving our sales processes. In my last article, I moved my focus to a non-sales area, addressing those points where we allow profit to leak out of our business. This article will look at four areas where delays in our systems and processes compromise our business: delays that affect our cash flow, our reputation, and our profitability.
Prompt Installation. It’s not unusual for a customer to call us to ask when their flooring will be installed. It should be the other way around; our salespeople should know when product has been delivered so they can promptly book the installation. The longer the product sits in our warehouse, the longer it takes to invoice the project and turn it into cash in the bank. The more product we have sitting in the warehouse waiting
on installation, the more our cash flow is harmed.
Invoicing. Similarly, how quickly are we getting our invoices out? Are we waiting to get invoices from suppliers and installers? If so, invoicing might be delayed for days. Our process should be that the invoice is sent on confirmation that the job has been completed. Again, delays in the invoicing process impact our cash flow.
Delays in our systems and processes compromise our business. They affect our cash flow, our reputation, and our profitability.
How quickly are we addressing faults with the installation?
Slow payers. How stringently do we enforce our terms of trade? Friendly phone calls to our slow payers will get the money into our bank account faster than waiting for them to pay us. Some of us are reluctant to make calls on debtors, but they can be made easier if we preface the first call by asking them if they are happy with their new flooring. I know some clients call all their clients to ask if they are happy and then to let them know the invoice is on the way.
Installation issues. Finally, how quickly are we addressing faults with the installation? I know from experience that if we don’t have
Financials
Debtors
Quotes
Software
a process for rapidly remediating these issues, they can grow to a daunting number, with a corresponding amount of ageing debtors. This has a further detrimental effect on our cash flow and, for customers with genuine complaints, a knock-on effect on our reputation.
It's worth talking about jobs that require remedial action. In my experience, many of the issues in our business resulted from misaligned expectations. Our salespeople can prevent these by talking to clients about seam placement and watermarking. What are the common complaints in your business, and how can you cut them off before installation?
Then, there are product faults, poor installation, and property damage. These are time-consuming and, inevitably, costly. In my
experience, again, the resolution of these has to be driven by the retailer because clients are often happy to live with the problem so long as they haven’t paid, and suppliers have their own processes for inspecting product problems and arriving at a resolution. If we don’t drive it ourselves, it can drag on for months, and we will be left with ageing debt. I also know that the longer a problem is unresolved, the less willing the client will be to pay the full amount owed.
If we don’t drive problem resolution ourselves, it can drag on for months, and we will be left with ageing debt.
There is often some minor damage when installing flooring. Again, our salespeople can help us by reminding clients that some touch-up painting might be required upon completion of the installation. Then, there is accidental damage that goes beyond what we would expect. Our installers know when they cause damage; they need to let us know so we can go on the front foot with the client. We need to fix the damage and, behind the scenes, work out an arrangement fair to the installer.
Finally, there is pre-existing damage. In these days of mobile phones, none of us have an excuse for not taking pictures of pre-existing damage, either when we are on site for the measure or when the installers first arrive. If we haven’t taken photos, we will likely get stuck with the cost of repairing damage we didn’t cause. When we are on the end of a losing argument, don’t drag out the pain; learn from it, move on, and take steps to prevent it in the future.

Making estimates accurate, reliable and tailored to client needs
Estimating and performing accurate takeoffs before embarking on a project are some of the most crucial steps in setting the stage for success.
“The biggest challenge in my business is getting clients to realise the importance of their role in understanding the scope of work before they bid for projects,” explained Kathy Case, who founded an estimating service in 2019 after 43 years in the construction industry. She started her career with a commercial tile contractor who performed complex projects spanning ceramic tile, terrazzo, marble walls and slabs, and expanded her career after 15 years to include all typer of flooring. In 2009, she chose to focus on estimating. Over the next 10 years, Kathy honed her estimating knowledge and process working for prominent flooring contractors and developed her approach.
This culminated in the establishment of a company four years ago, which is currently being rebranded as Quantify ANZ.
“...we customise our work to our client’s standards and have developed a package of deliverables that serve more than just the immediate need of the proposal,”
Quantify ANZ provides comprehensive takeoffs for commercial construction including all types of flooring, ceramic tile walls, countertops, walls, slabs, painting, drywalls, ceilings and wall coverings.
“Because of my diverse background having installed, estimated, project managed, sales and executive management, we customise our work to our client’s standards and have developed a package of deliverables that serve more than just the immediate need of the proposal,” Kathy explains.
“This includes the original software file, colour coded finish plans with 3D renderings for vertical applications, a list of materials and quantities, a list of clarifications, SpecIntel CSV file (if the client uses this software), and a working documents folder with all the pertinent drawings, specifications and addenda pages that apply to the scope of the work we are estimating. We also created a custom app through which our clients can access through their phone or tablet the most important information for the life of the project.”
Software
Quantify has recently added painting estimates, shop drawings and renderings to their roster of services. It uses MeasureSquare, Safe Harbor’s Estimat-All, RFMS Measure, Calidus, Planswift, OST and Edge for its takeoffs, customising its approach to provide easy to understand output for clients.
The COVID years only intensified the need for independent estimating services. “Estimators tend to move on a two-year cycle, whether it is to another company, to another position or out of the industry. Contractors are realising that it is easier and more cost effective to hire independent estimating services rather than spending $10,000 - $15, 000 to recruit, plus the cost of training – and then still have periods of overload that stress their estimators.
By using an independent service, they have the resources available to address their changing needs. It also enables them to focus
on sales and project management rather than recruiting and training estimators. “
Back in the ‘80’s when Kathy was a contractor, she was a member of the NTCA (National Tile Contractors Association). But in 2022, she rejoined as an affiliate member.
“NTCA does a great job at education the industry,” she said. “I have been blessed to have mentors throughout my career and I want to be able to pass on my knowledge. Having worn many hats over the years, I hope that more contractors will recognise the value of having a quality, emergency
resource to help them with their estimates when they are short on estimators and are at risk of missing an opportunity to bid for valuable projects and disappoint a client. Because of my experience, our estimators excel at ceramic tile and stone estimates at a detail level for which ceramic tile contractors are looking.”
Inspirations for Kathy include attending TISE, Coverings, TSP, Starnet, FCICA and Fuse events. “They are an opportunity to learn, to gather with existing clients, to network, meet new clients and to teach,” she said.
Kathy is an avid follower of Tony Robbins events as well as coaching for her own growth and for her team. Some events include Date with Destiny, Unleash the Power Within, Business Mastery and Business Mastery II, which address personal and business goal setting, achievement and growth.
Kathy and her team get great satisfaction when they are an integral part of their client’s success, while at the same time solving the issues associated with estimating.

The latest interior trend report by Feltex Carpets
The team at Feltex Carpets are designers and technical specialists armed with a passion for interiors. Their expert team are at the forefront of cutting-edge designs, bringing the latest colour and style trends to floors all over the world. Their carefully curated Interior Trends highlight new and emerging trends, and how these can be bought to life in the home with Feltex carpet.
Introducing Bold Brights
The Bold Brights trend introduces a vibrant, modern approach to home design, perfect for creating an inviting yet lively setting for socialising. This trend blends bold, dynamic colours with earthy, grounding tones, resulting in a space that feels warm, dynamic and effortlessly stylish.
Central to this look are ‘blue blocks,’ where deep, classic shades of blue provide a steady foundation. These blues not only anchor the room but also evoke a sense of calm and order, allowing the more playful colours to stand out. These bright hues can be used sparingly to highlight key areas—think statement chairs, accent walls, or even a bar cart - creating dynamic visual interest without overwhelming the space.
To offset the vibrancy of the bright tones, rich earthy hues like chocolate, mahogany, and terracotta are used. These warm colours soften the intensity of the brights and add layers of texture and depth, bringing in an organic, comforting feel. The resulting contrast between the vivid and the muted ensures that the space feels balanced, visually cohesive, and inviting.
The art of entertaining with Bold Brights
For entertaining, this colour scheme is ideal for drawing attention to key areas like seating arrangements or bar setups. The bright
accents add a sense of fun and energy, while the deeper tones ensure the space remains grounded and sophisticated. It is an easy way to create an atmosphere that is both stylish and approachable, making guests feel comfortable while enjoying the lively ambiance.
How to incorporate Bold Brights into the home
To incorporate this trend into an interior space, start with a neutral foundation, like a soft, textured wool carpet in a light shade such as Salisbury in 10 Sarsen Stone.
After the foundation is set, layer in the brights through accessories such as cushions, throws, or artwork. To add a warm, organic touch, integrate earthy tones like sepia or terracotta through furniture pieces or decorative elements. The balance of textures and colours will ensure the space feels both vibrant and cohesive, perfect for both everyday living and special occasions.
Discover more and immerse yourself in the latest interior trends with Feltex Carpets. Your customers can also order up to three complimentary samples of the luxurious wool carpets to bring the Bold Brights trend to life in their home. Visit www.feltex.com to get started. s

Dulux Colour Forecast 2025
Colours to foster hope and creativity.
This summer Dulux colour forecasters predict that a combination of almost-pastel shades alongside bold, rich colours will emerge in Australian interiors in response to our desire for a renewed sense of hope and to foster creativity.
“Vibrant and uplifting hues like those featured within the Dulux Emerge palette, one of the three palettes from our Dulux Colour Forecast for 2025, can be used together in any combination to bring joy back into our homes this summer,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour and Communications Manager.
“The Dulux Emerge palette has the power to completely transform a space into a sunny sanctuary and evoke a care-free attitude. Visually, the trend features soft rounded forms and expressive collections of decor, crafted with modularity and curves. These shapes and free flowing lines add to the whimsical yet calming nature of the trend.” Lucena-Orr adds.
Lauren Treloar, Dulux Colour Manager, adds that the Dulux Emerge palette is likely to resonate with consumers and designers alike, as it’s filled with many colours that are soft and soothing.
“Both Dulux Piglet and Dulux Lavenbrun have brown undertones, which means they’re actually neutral shades that evoke a comforting feeling with depth.” Treloar explains that “throughout the last few years,

we’ve seen a shift in Australia’s appetite for using coloured neutrals and bolder shades within their homes. This willingness and increased colour confidence is a key insight that has influenced the Dulux Emerge palette and we can’t wait to see how consumers incorporate these colours in their homes this summer.”
Offering inspiration for how to use this palette and add a sunny mood to your own space, the Dulux team with Bree Banfield (formerly Leech), worked their styling magic on a family home. Focusing attentions in the living area, hallway and bedroom that were predominantly white, neutral spaces.
“The living room was filled with light and made for entertaining, which gave us the opportunity to create spaces filled with character and connection. Using Dulux Piglet on the walls and ceiling, we completely enveloped the space in colour and warmth. The supporting wall within the centre of the room provided an opportunity to introduce another burst of colour, so we used Dulux Clay Bake - a muted and muddied gold - to help ground the space and encourage the demarcation of different zones within the room.”
“The cabinetry, trims and window wells feature Dulux Hog Bristle Quarter, a wonderfully warm shade of white, building on the playful ambiance of the space.” Treloar adds.
“Throughout the last few years, we’ve seen a shift in Australia’s appetite for using coloured neutrals and bolder shades within their homes.”
Adding contrast to the neutral backdrop, Banfield referenced bolder colours from the palette throughout furnishings, curved ceramic objects and coloured glass vessels, including warm, earthy yellow greens and muted blues and purples. To complete the sunny and carefree look, Banfield incorporated striped patterns within floral still life artwork, cushions and side tables, blended alongside free-flowing lines and organic curves, referenced throughout boucle textured furnishings, furniture and handcrafted vessels.
Elsewhere, the main bedroom heavily references warm, brownbased pinks, where the team has used Dulux Terracotta Chip for the walls alongside lighter shades of pink, seen within different bedding textures and the simple still life artwork. Introducing a sense of relief and casualness back into the space, Banfield used other muted shades from the palette as accents.

soft curves and are inviting to touch. As a result, the tonal transformation emits a feeling of pure joy without overwhelm.
“Similar to the living room, the main bedroom was filled with an abundance of natural light which made the space feel open and beautiful, but the addition of warming colours and summer-embracing decor has completely transformed the main bedroom into an alluring haven.” Lucena-Orr adds.
To add some character and connection to the rest of the home, we added colour to the hallway using Dulux Lemon Blast on the ceiling and Dulux Cornstalk on the walls and decorative arch at the end of the space.
“Australians love entertaining at home and introducing sunny colours are an obvious choice to instantly add a sense of fun and wonder to your home this summer.” Treloar adds. s
• Mix and match: any mix of colours from the palette can be used to capture the trend of Dulux Emerge palette. However, a good starting point is to use larger portions of the warmer shades to inspire wall and ceiling choices and bigger furniture pieces. For accents, reference cooler colours within the palette throughout decorative objects, cushions and artwork.
• Joyful colour is key for summer: in addition to mixing and matching colours from the palette, have fun playing with patterns and shapes. Look for quirky vessels, source still life artworks that feature florals, fruit or summer delicacies, coloured lighting and other textures that link to summer like wicker or rattan.
• Stick to organic and rounded shapes: free flowing lines, boucle textures and modular furniture help to create a relaxed, inviting environment.
• Paint instantly transforms: while investing in a statement furniture piece, decorative vessels and artwork can be cost prohibitive, adding colour to your walls through paint is a great way to completely transform your room on a budget.
• Soft blues can make a space feel larger: try Dulux Puhoi Half in smaller rooms to create the illusion of a bigger space.
• Start your colour journey in the bedroom: the bedroom is one of the easiest spaces to start exploring colour. Try to find colours from the palette within existing furniture and furnishings i.e. your favourite duvet cover and cushions, then select one, two or four walls to experiment with. Don’t forget to consider the room layout and the amount of light it receives too.
• For colour surety: Order A4 Colour Stickers, Colour Swatches or Sample Pots from dulux.com.au in your chosen colour(s). Alternatively, Dulux has an online colour advice team, or a Colour Design Service if you want a design professional to assist in curating your space.

A tale of perseverance, growth and positivity
Article by Fiona Wischnewski, CEO, FCIA
At Carpet Court Murray Bridge, we are fortunate to work with a diverse group of dedicated individuals who bring their passion and commitment to their roles. Among them is Kody, who, despite his relatively short time with the team, has already made a profound impact. His journey at Carpet Court has been one of growth, resilience, and determination.
A new beginning
Kody’s path to Carpet Court started in an unexpected way. Initially, he found it difficult and intimidating to approach the store due to his struggles with anxiety and a diagnosis of autism. However, with the support of mentors from organisations like Headspace, Kody’s determination to find work led him to Bridge Carpet Court, despite the absence of any open positions. Recognising his potential, the team decided to create a role just for him.
Kody's experience highlights that challenges such as those posed by autism should never be seen as barriers to achieving one’s goals. “While being on the Spectrum has had its challenges throughout my life, working at Carpet Court has helped me confront these head-on,” Kody reflects. “I’ve learned that no disability or disorder should ever stop someone from reaching their goals or doubting their potential.”
Gaining independence
For Kody, a job is more than just a means to earn money—it is about gaining independence and building his self-esteem. After finishing high school, Kody felt uncertain about his future. However, when he joined Carpet Court, he found a purpose that inspired him to push for personal growth.
“I came here because I wanted to become more independent and gain confidence. Working here has given me a reason to strive every day,” Kody shares. His new role has helped him grow more self-sufficient, offering the structure and support he needed to thrive in a professional environment.
Daily responsibilities
Each day at Carpet Court presents Kody with a variety of tasks. He works closely with Mark in the warehouse, where he helps set up and cut carpets, ensuring they are ready for sale or installation. Maintaining an organised and clean warehouse is also part of his responsibilities, which plays a key role in the team’s overall efficiency.
In addition, Kody handles some computerbased tasks, such as tracking tool inventories and overseeing warehouse logistics. Although these tasks can sometimes be challenging, Kody approaches them with a positive attitude and is eager to learn. “I always ask for feedback, and I see any negative comments as an opportunity to improve,” he says.
A supportive environment
Kody’s upbeat approach has been welcomed by his colleagues, who appreciate his positivity and enthusiasm. Merilyn, one of Carpet Court’s directors, emphasises Kody’s influence on the team. “Kody brings a fresh perspective. His positivity reminds us of the

importance of being organised, and when things get hectic, he helps us stay focused on the basics. His attitude has helped improve communication and efficiency within the team.”
Mark, the warehouse manager, also praises Kody’s contribution: “He’s really relieved some of the pressure in the warehouse. His attention to detail is spot-on, and he’s always ahead of the game, keeping things clean and organised. It’s been a pleasure working with him.”
Previous experience and volunteer work
Before joining Carpet Court, Kody gained experience in a variety of roles. He worked as a kitchen hand at a pasta restaurant, but it did not provide the challenges he was looking for. He also had a job at another venue, where he was left underprepared for the demands of the role.
Kody’s volunteer work at the food bank was an important stepping stone in his journey. There, he helped organise bags of produce, maintained stock, and ensured the space was clean. This experience gave him valuable skills that proved beneficial when he applied for his current role.
“I came here because I wanted to become more independent and gain confidence. Working here has given me a reason to strive every day,”
Looking to the future
While Kody is currently focused on his role at Carpet Court, he has big dreams for the future. He’s particularly interested in pursuing a career in teaching and acting. With aspirations to attend university, Kody hopes to eventually become a teacher or tutor, a field that aligns with his passion for helping others learn and grow. “I’ve always wanted to teach,” Kody says. “It’s a difficult field to break into, but I believe it’s a job where I can make a real difference in people’s lives.”
Why Carpet Court took a chance on Kody
Merilyn explains why they decided to offer Kody a chance: “When Kody came in, his professionalism immediately stood out. His support person took a step back, allowing Kody to lead the conversation. He presented himself with confidence and respect, which made a huge impact. Even though Kody had

faced setbacks with other jobs, we could see his genuine desire to work and succeed.”
Kody began with a work experience placement, and it quickly became clear that he was someone the team wanted to invest in.
The impact of Kody’s presence
Kody’s time at Carpet Court has been mutually beneficial. His strong work ethic, attention to detail, and positive attitude have contributed significantly to the team’s success. His ability to stay organised and his eagerness to seek feedback have made him an invaluable team member.
“I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far,” Kody says. “I want to keep learning and improving, and I hope that one day I can make an even bigger impact.”
In the short time Kody has been with Bridge Carpet Court, he has proven himself capable of handling various responsibilities. His story is a reminder of the importance of providing opportunities to people, believing in their potential, and supporting their personal growth. As Kody’s journey at Carpet Court continues, the future looks promising for this hardworking and talented young individual. s

Choosing the right stair nosing for outdoor environments
Discover how to choose the best stair nosing for outdoor environments. Learn about materials, slip resistance, and visibility to ensure safety and compliance.
Playing a vital role in creating safe, accessible spaces, stair nosings provide essential visual and tactile cues that help prevent accidents and improve stairway usability, particularly for those with visibility or mobility impairments.
In outdoor environments, installing compliant stair nosings becomes even more critical, as dynamic environmental and high-traffic conditions can significantly impact safety and accessibility. Unlike indoor stairways, outdoor staircases are subject to varying light, weather, and surface conditions, increasing the risk of slips, trips, and falls while also impacting the durability of installed products.
We will explore the importance of selecting the right stair nosing for outdoor environments, including relevant compliance standards and key factors for optimal safety and performance.
Understanding the importance of stair nosing for outdoor environments
Installing the right stair nosings is essential to minimise preventable injuries and avoid costly legal consequences if compliance standards are unmet. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, there were 15,458 hospitalisations resulting from falls on stairs or steps between 2021-22 and 98 fatalities between 2020-21. These figures highlight the critical role stair nosings play in enhancing the safety, accessibility, and usability of staircases.
Outdoor stair nosings must endure extreme weather conditions, including prolonged sun exposure, rain, and frost. High durability and UV-resistant materials are essential to prevent fading, cracking, or slipperiness over time, ensuring that outdoor stairways remain safe and functional in all conditions while maximising your long-term investment.
Compliance Standards for accessible stair nosing in Australia
In Australia, the National Construction Code (NCC) and Building Code of Australia (BCA) incorporate Australian Standards that detail specific requirements for designing accessible environments, including provisions for mobility and access.
The BCA adopts AS1428.1:2021 as a legal requirement, focusing on accessible design standards to accommodate individuals with disabilities. This standard provides guidelines for constructing accessible stairways (excluding fire stairways) in all new developments and major refurbishments, ensuring safety and accessibility for people with disabilities.
Above: Classic Tredfx Stair Nosings, St Leonard’s College
For outdoor environments, AS4586:2013 outlines slip resistance classifications for materials, including stair nosing, to enhance safety in wet or slippery conditions. This helps maintain secure footing and is especially crucial in outdoor, high-traffic areas.
Additionally, The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) mandates that buildings and facilities provide reasonable access for individuals with disabilities. This includes ensuring that stairways, walkways, and other communal spaces are safe, accessible, and supportive of all mobility needs.
These standards apply to all various outdoor environments where public access is provided, including but not limited to commercial developments, residential apartments, and holiday rentals. For more information on the applicable Australian Standards and other relevant guidelines, visit the Resource Hub on the Classic Architectural Group’s website and download their Stair Nosing Compliance Guide.
Five key considerations to assist with outdoor stair nosing selection
Aside from achieving your desired look, we strongly recommend selecting and specifying your stair nosing before designing and building your staircase, whether for indoor or outdoor use.
This proactive approach ensures that you can account for any additional height added by the nosing during installation, per the AS1657:2018 requirements, which stipulate that risers must have a minimum height of 115mm and a maximum height of 190mm.
Below is an overview of the key factors to consider when selecting stair nosing for your outdoor project.
Slip Resistance
The top surface of stair nosings must feature a slip-resistant finish to mitigate the risk of slips and falls. The slip resistance rating should be at least P3, which indicates a moderate slip risk.
All stair nosing materials must undergo slip resistance testing to ensure proper classification following Australian Standard AS4586:2013. This is especially critical for outdoor areas, where environmental factors such as rain can create slippery surfaces.
Visibility
Stair nosings must span the path of travel of the stair tread and feature a single, continuous contrast strip. The luminance contrast strip should be between 50mm and 75mm wide and cannot be set back from the tread/riser intersection by more than 15mm.
Luminance Contrast
AS1428.1:2021 specifies the Luminance Reflectance Value (LRV) requirements of stair nosings, ensuring maximum visibility for individuals with vision impairments.
The contrast strip must provide at least 30% luminance contrast to the floor finish or background for optimal safety.

Material Durability
Stair nosings are typically made from highly durable, weather-resistant, and UV-stable materials such as aluminium and fibreglass for outdoor applications. Solid brass stair nosings are also gaining popularity due to their longevity and aesthetic appeal. These materials are ideal for high-traffic areas and wet conditions, providing heavy-duty resistance to corrosion and wear.
Polymer inserts are commonly combined with metal nosings to enhance slip resistance, improve visibility, and reduce noise. Luminescent inserts are also popular for outdoor stair nosings, ensuring visibility at night and other low-light conditions.
Maintenance
Due to exposure to harsh weather conditions and other environmental factors, we recommend
Compliance Begins with Classic
implementing a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule for outdoor stair nosings. Periodic testing should also be conducted to ensure the continued performance of slip resistance, visibility, and overall durability. If any signs of wear, damage, or reduced functionality are detected, prompt replacement should be arranged to maintain safety standards.
For a detailed breakdown of the latest compliance criteria and best practice guidelines, visit the Resource Hub on the Classic Architectural Group’s website and download their Stair Nosing Compliance Guide.
Recommended stair nosing installation for shared outdoor spaces
All outdoor areas with public access should follow relevant compliance guidelines for product selection, installation, and maintenance. Here are some recommended guidelines for choosing and installing stair nosing for common outdoor areas:
Public Parks: High-traffic areas in parks with varying light and weather conditions need durable, slip-resistant stair nosing, supported by regular inspections and maintenance. We recommend using stair nosing with a natural or matte finish to harmonise with outdoor aesthetics while providing ample visibility and contrast.
Public Transport Stations and Facilities: In areas with heavy foot traffic, such as train stations, stair nosing should be made from robust, high slip-resistant materials. Luminescent or reflective finishes enhance visibility in low-light conditions and meet LRV compliance requirements, benefiting those with visibility impairments.
Health and Community Facilities:
Ensuring safe outdoor access for people with diverse visibility and mobility needs calls for stair nosings with high slip resistance and optimal colour contrast to maintain visibility at all times.
Commercial Building Entrances:
Sleek, weather-resistant stair nosing materials like solid brass, aluminium, or stainless steel with contrasting insert colours provide safe entry and exit while complementing the building's architectural design.
Educational Facilities: Schools and universities, which experience medium to high foot traffic throughout the day, benefit from stair nosings in highly durable, slipresistant materials, such as Classic Tredfx Aluminium Stair Nosings, with bright finishes for added safety and visibility.
Other outdoor spaces, including hospitality and retail areas, sports and recreational facilities, and residential properties, can also benefit from selecting and installing the right stair nosing to enhance safety and accessibility.
Common stair nosing mistakes to avoid
• Failing to ensure that stair nosings meet the appropriate slip-resistance criteria.
• Inadequate luminance contrast with the surrounding floor finish or background
• Choosing unsuitable materials for outdoor areas or selecting indoor-only stair nosings.
• Not accounting for predicted pedestrian traffic volumes.
• Incorrect dimensions and improper installation according to relevant safety
standards and manufacturer guidelines.
• Overlooking aesthetics in relation to the space’s overall design and architecture.
Stair nosings are problem solvers and problem preventers. The easiest way to avoid common stair nosing mistakes is by partnering with a provider who is up to speed on the latest compliance, testing, and installation guidelines.

Tarkett Vinyl ensures hygienic, durable spaces in Atherton Hospital
Serving the community of Atherton Tablelands, Yidinji Country in Northern Queensland, the redeveloped Atherton Hospital is designed to offer a homely feel while delivering exceptional care. To meet high standards of hygiene and durability, the Architects specified a suite of complementary Tarkett Vinyl products, designed to protect both floors and walls.
For the Clinical Services Building, Brisbane Architects Peddle Thorp used shape and colour to connect with the local history and reflect the natural landscape.
‘The hospital sits on a hill with views of the Seven Sisters ranges, so we used large windows to capture natural light and celebrate the scenery,’ says Brendan Sutton from Peddle Thorp. ‘The client preferred a muted palette to complement the views, so patients could enjoy the outlook from their beds.’
When designing clinical spaces, the Architects consulted with the hospital operators, Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Services, to benefit from their experience
with robust and hygienic facilities. This aligned with Peddle Thorp’s history of specifying Tarkett products.
‘In a hospital, infection control is crucial. Tarkett offers a proven solution that we’ve used in many of our Healthcare projects. Its simplicity and robustness make it ideal for infection control requirements,’ says Brendan.
Ian McTackett, Operations Manager for Cairns Hospital, agrees: ‘We needed products that offer high-quality finishes, easy maintenance, and quick access to replacements. Tarkett has become our go-to for these reasons.’
Superior performance for clinical environments
With around 13,000 sqm of floors and walls to cover, a combination of Tarkett’s iQ Eminent, iQ Granit SD, Granit Safe.T, and Wallgard were specified for different applications. Each product was selected for its performance in key areas.
‘First, we needed Vinyl with high integrity finishes to prevent infection by avoiding gaps that could trap dirt,’ Ian explains. ‘Second, we needed easy maintenance - these areas are cleaned frequently, so we opted for Vinyl that could be damp or wet mopped with minimal chemicals. Finally, access to spares and replacements was essential, and Tarkett Vinyl is easy to replace and colour match.’
Case Study
Combining
performance with aesthetics
Tarkett’s Vinyl offers a range of attractive, practical colourways, enabling the Architects to tailor each space to meet both performance and aesthetic needs. This also helped create a cohesive design palette that reduced the visual sterility of the hospital environment.
‘In the Operating Theatre, we used neutral floor Vinyl and white walls to make spills visible for easy cleaning,’ says Brendan. ‘In birthing suites, we took the same approach, adding colour in the joinery where spills aren’t a concern. In less critical areas like hallways and waiting rooms, we added pops of colour to define departments, using flooring, joinery, doors, and signage to create a cohesive language and help with wayfinding.’
Detailed planning for optimal installation
Providing premium products is essential, but their performance depends on correct installation and careful planning. → 46
‘The range of colours Tarkett offers allowed us to define areas with distinct palettes, like eucalyptus in Emergency and plum in the Birthing Suites,’ Brendan adds.
Case Study
‘Vinyl’s effectiveness is highly dependent on the quality of the substrate and the skills of the installers,’ says Ian. ‘For the Atherton project, Nexus Commercial Flooring delivered one of the best Vinyl installations I’ve seen.’ Detailed planning for the flooring layout, particularly the welds, was critical to performance.
‘In the Operating Theatre, we used full floor and wall Vinyl. We carefully planned the welds to ensure they didn’t align in areas where heavy operating tables would move, reducing the number of welds to minimise gaps for easier cleaning and maintenance,’ Ian explains.
Training and testing for weld integrity
Ensuring strong welds was vital for the installation, as any gaps could compromise hygiene in the clinical environment. Tarkett provided training and testing for optimal results.
‘Tarkett offered on-site support and inspection, which was well received,’ says Tony Litfin, owner of Nexus Commercial Flooring. ‘I’ve worked with Tarkett products since 1984, and they’re very manageable— especially for welding. They’re some of the best products for this purpose.’
‘Tarkett went above and beyond by providing weld pressure tests,’ adds Ian. ‘They applied pressure to test weld integrity, addressing any weak points immediately.’
Project: Atherton Hospital
Product: iQ Eminent, iQ Granit, iQ Granit SD, Granit Safe.T, Wallgard
Architect: PeddleThorp
Installation: Nexus Commercial Flooring

Protecting walls, floors, and people Tarkett’s Wallgard Vinyl was used in hightraffic areas where bed and trolley movement posed a risk of wall damage. ‘Any knocks compromise the clinical environment,’ says Ian. ‘Having Tarkett Wallgard to protect the walls is a huge advantage and gives us peace of mind.’
Tony notes the importance of welding in this context: ‘The 2mm Wallgard Vinyl allowed for smooth transitions between walls and floors, matching the 2mm floor Vinyl perfectly. In wet areas, the wall Vinyl extended to the ceiling, ensuring consistency.’
For the people of the Atherton Tablelands, the result is a building that staff and patients are proud to be in, offering a comfortable, userfriendly hospital with superior protection in its clinical spaces.

The success of any flooring installation hinges on one essential factor: accurate moisture measurement.
Moisture meters are vital tools in this process, providing the precision necessary to prevent costly mistakes, maintain the quality, and enhance the durability of your flooring. This guide explores the important role of moisture meters in flooring installations, covering their functions, various types, and best practices for use to ensure the long-term success and adaptability of your flooring to changing environmental conditions.
Understanding Moisture Meters
Moisture meters, also known as moisture readers, are essential for accurately determining the moisture content within flooring materials. These devices are critical for ensuring that the material is at an optimal moisture level before installation, which can significantly affect the durability and appearance of the flooring. The industry uses two main types of moisture meters: pin-type and pinless.
Pin-Type Moisture Meters: These meters feature metal pins directly penetrating the material to measure moisture levels. They are highly effective for providing specific moisture content readings, making them ideal for detailed assessments of wooden floorboards and other materials where precise measurements are necessary.
Pinless Moisture Meters: With electromagnetic sensors, pinless meters measure moisture levels without physically penetrating the material's surface. This
non-invasive approach is perfect for quickly scanning large areas and is especially useful for sensitive materials where surface damage is a concern, like finished wood or concrete floors.
The importance of moisture testing in flooring
Accurate moisture testing is crucial in safeguarding against common flooring problems like warping, buckling, and mould growth, which threaten both the aesthetic and structural integrity of installations. Key to this preventative strategy, moisture meters facilitate precise moisture content detection across various materials, an essential step for maintaining the resilience of flooring installations over time. This is especially vital for materials such as wood, laminate, and concrete, all highly susceptible to moisture's adverse effects.
Moisture meters serve a dual purpose: they allow for the early identification of excessive moisture levels, enabling timely corrective actions that keep floors flat, secure, and healthy, and they provide precise moisture assessments that ensure safe moisture levels are maintained for each flooring type, thereby preventing potential damage caused by moisture.
Preperation & Installation
Choosing a suitable moisture meter for your flooring project is crucial to ensure accurate moisture measurement and prevent potential flooring issues. Here are the main factors to consider:
Flooring material: The nature of your flooring significantly influences the choice between pin-type and pinless moisture meters. Pin-type meters penetrate the material and might be ideal for getting precise readings on wood and laminate floors. In contrast, pinless meters are better suited for quickly assessing moisture levels in concrete floors without causing damage.
Meter accuracy: Precision is nonnegotiable when it comes to moisture measurement. An accurate moisture meter ensures that you are making informed decisions based on reliable data, directly impacting the longevity and integrity of the flooring.
Budget: With moisture meters available across a spectrum of prices, it is essential to assess the balance between cost and necessary features. While affordability is important, investing in a quality moisture meter that meets your project’s specific needs can save you from costly repairs or replacements in the future.
Best practices for moisture testing
Effective moisture testing is paramount for the success of floor installations, with timing and environmental conditions playing critical roles. Here are some best practices to ensure precise moisture assessment:
Optimal testing conditions: Conduct moisture tests under stable weather conditions to avoid skewed results from recent humidity changes. Ideally, testing should occur when the building's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system has been operational for a significant period, simulating the environment post-installation.
Timing for tests: It is beneficial to perform moisture tests at different times, such as in the morning and late afternoon, to account for daily humidity fluctuations. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the floor's moisture levels throughout the day.
Interpreting readings: Accurately interpreting moisture meter readings is crucial. For concrete slabs, follow the ASTM F2170-18 standard, which involves using in situ probes to measure the relative humidity inside the slab. According to Australian standards, the concrete slab’s RH must be tested within the concrete and read under 75% RH before installation. For wood and laminate, use the meter's specific scale or settings designed for those materials, ensuring readings fall within the manufacturer's recommended moisture content levels.
Proceeding with installation: Installation should only commence once the moisture content readings consistently fall within safe limits for the specific flooring material. This ensures the material has acclimatised to the installation environment, reducing the risk of future moisture related issues.
Invest in the right moisture meter
Investing in a high-quality moisture measurement device is a strategic decision that contributes to the success of your flooring projects. By adhering to established best practices for moisture testing, you can optimise efficiency, minimise costs, and ensure that your flooring installations are durable and built to last. s
