A unified approach to sustainability
On World Ecolabel Day 2024, GECA and Eco Choice Aotearoa are proud to announce a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) members. This agreement streamlines the certification process for companies seeking to demonstrate sustainability leadership in Australia and New Zealand.
This MoU is designed to simplify certification for companies operating across the Tasman, offering a clear pathway for organisations to achieve ecolabels in both countries. The first company to benefit from this dual certification is Upcycled Building Materials Australia (saveBOARD), a pioneering circular economy business in the built environment.
"Volunteering to have five products independently assessed against GECA's Panel Boards standard is an incredible achievement," said Josh Begbie, CEO at GECA. "Each product has undergone a transparent, independent, third-party assessment against science-based criteria relevant to its category. At GECA, we believe this hard work and dedication to transparency and accountability are transformative for the Australian and Aotearoa marketplaces."
With the MoU, businesses can secure GECA and Eco Choice Aotearoa certifications simultaneously or efficiently add the second certification, reducing costs and administrative complexity. This collaboration further cements the two lifecycle ecolabels' trans-Tasman commitment to sustainability and responsible production underpinned by GEN's rigorous standards.
saveBOARD: A Circular Economy Leader
Known for its innovative building materials made from recycled content, saveBOARD champions the circular economy, diverting waste from landfill and reducing embodied carbon in the built environment. The next 90 seconds could save your mate
Lived experience highlights importance of being a mate.
Young workers have highlighted the lifechanging role played by their mates in a series of personal stories with R U OK? The case studies reinforce the call for young trainees and apprentices to ‘Be a mate, it’s worth it’, because when we’re going through tough times, mates are often best placed to understand and lend support.
Thomas Eyre, a former apprentice fitter machinist, says his apprenticeship was a challenging time. “During my apprenticeship, my mental health started to decline. It had a massive impact on how I felt,” said Mr Eyre. “I started isolating myself and stopped reaching out to mates.”
Research has found that those on the receiving end of a meaningful R U OK? conversation felt supported, heard, safe, and better about managing their situation, having talked it through with someone who showed genuine interest and concern.
“When you have people checking in, it encourages you to open up,” added Mr Eyre. “I received the best support from people who asked, ‘what’s wrong?’ and then truly listened. You don’t have to offer much advice; just be that ear they can talk to. Talking through it really helps.”
Mr Eyre says he wants everyone to understand how important it is to reach out to your mates.
“It’s daunting to ask for help, and a lot of the time, we don’t do it. So, you’ve got to be the one to reach out and ask, ‘are you OK?’, he explained. “It’s important to have those conversations regularly because we might face a challenging time any day of the year. You can be a supportive mate just by checking in - send a message, grab a coffee, or go for a run together.”
The impact on their mental health is one of the leading reasons apprentices and trainees do not finish their apprenticeships, often due to challenging working conditions, poor pay, or bullying.
“Research shows that being an apprentice or trainee can be challenging for young people who are learning to transition from the classroom to the workplace,” said Katherine Newton, R U OK? CEO. “This, combined with life’s usual ups and downs, can have a cumulative effect on mental health and their sense of social connection.”
“R U OK? are encouraging apprentices and trainees to build and maintain strong
friendships they can rely on as they move through life, to ensure they feel connected and supported. ‘Be a mate, it’s worth it’ is about being there for your mates, and knowing they'll be there for you too.”
Developed with generous support from CareSuper, ‘Be a mate, it’s worth it’ includes practical tools and tips to empower trainees and apprentices with the knowledge and confidence to have meaningful R U OK? conversations and foster supportive friendships.

Imagine an advanced system where cabinet design and manufacturing are seamlessly integrated for optimum efficiency and quality control throughout your production process? A system capable of automating all your machines; to truly explore the full potential of your equipment. ALPHACAM is most likely the solution you are looking for.
The majority of cabinet makers use CNC machinery to process their components, and most use some form of software to develop part lists from computer generated 3D models of cabinets, usually from whole kitchen designs. Some CAD programs have limited capabilities to convert those parts into machine code, usually in a nested cutting pattern, but the norm is to use some form of post-processing software to develop that code. CAM software, short for Computer Aided Machining software, is your most powerful tool to get the most from your expensive CNC machine investment.
The Right Tool for The Job
ALPHACAM, part of Hexagon Production Software is a multi-axis manufacturing program with the ability to complete simple 2D drawings through to complex 3D models. ALPHACAM is easy to use, is flexible, and empowers cabinet makers to produce complex, high-quality work. ALPHACAM is a globally recognised CAD CAM solution for wood, stone and composites. Blake McCrossen is National Brand Manager for ALPHACAM Australia. Blake founded ALPHACAM Australia with the vision to advance machining capabilities and automation within the wood, stone, and composites industries.
Blake said, “With over 40 years of combined expertise in wood machining, engineering, CAD/CAM, and IT, our team brings a diverse skill set that enables us to achieve virtually any outcome for our clients. While the industry has largely focused on processbased operations, we are uniquely positioned to drive autonomy in areas that were previously unattainable for many businesses. As a dedicated provider of ComputerAided Manufacturing (CAM) solutions, we specialize in ensuring seamless integration between any CAD design and CNC machines. We place particular emphasis on automating processes for 3, 4, and 5-axis CNC machines, offering significant improvements in efficiency and precision.”
The benefits of CAM software are numerous and too important to ignore. CAM systems optimize your manufacturing process. It reduces lead times and improves production speed and this means significant cost savings. CAM systems eliminate human error, improve quality, reduce waste, improves the safety of your people and provide much greater flexibility. CAM systems also significantly reduce the time it takes your customers design to become a reality. Whatever you have spent on your machine, unless it’s driven correctly, you may not be getting the full potential from your investment.
Focus on Automation
In modern manufacturing where the cost of production is critical, automation is key and ALPHACAM has this covered. Your software investment in a typical cabinet shop is around 2.5% of your manufacturing setup but delivers ten times more than that to your bottom line. In your factory you could have a board store, a nesting machine, possibly
Company Profile
a 5-axis machine for complex shapes, an edge bander and maybe even a drilling and dowel insertion machine. It could take you four hours to set up all these machines to process a job, but ALPHACAM can take any CAD program file and achieve all this in less than ten minutes! Really! Blake said, “ALPHACAM incorporates automation many cabinet makers have yet to see, even on 5-axis machines, something not common in Australia.”
ALPHACAM software comes in a range of integrated modules, so you get precisely what you really need. An ALPHACAM solution provider will advise you on your needs, based on your present and any future manufacturing requirements. The minimum requirements for your hardware (computer) are clearly communicated. For most cabinet makers, three modules will improve your production to new levels – a core module to
import the CAD file and produce the machine code; a nesting module to optimize the sheet layout; and an automation module to batch process the files, and produce reports, labels and barcodes. Blake and his team are focused on a customised approach to their customers, an approach that supplies exactly what you need.
Focus on Your Business
There is a saying in the video game industry that goes, “Minutes to learn, a lifetime to master.” While this is not completely true of any manufacturing software, the heart of the saying is that it’s quickly learnt, and as you use it, you discover ever-more ways it can help your business. Mastering any software requires time and practice but remember, you don’t need mastery, that will come with time. What you need is competence and with ALPHACAM, this can be achieved within a few weeks. Blake tells us that feedback he gets from customers like Stonnington Group, SCF Interiors, and Riviera Yachts is that ALPHACAM is one of the easiest software programs to learn.
When you get your new CNC machine, the sales team will eventually move on when they believe you have the skills to use it by yourself. However, anecdotal evidence
suggests that for most manufacturers in any trade, the machine will only ever be used to about 15% of its capabilities. ALPHACAM has the power to unlock more of your potential manufacturing power. ALPHACAM is integral to High-Speed Machining, a recent innovation in the wood and cabinet trades, offering precise control over feed rates and cutting speeds. It allows for seamless integration and synchronization of various machining processes on a single machine and offers comprehensive control over the simultaneous movement of five axes machines.
If your dream is to maximise the efficiency of your machines, improve quality, eliminate errors and waste, improve safety and reduce your time to market, then a recognised, high-performing CAM system is what you are looking for. ALPHACAM is the world’s most widely used CAM software for the cabinet industry. In the age of automation and smart factories, a stand-alone program for a single machine is not the answer you are looking for. Modern manufacturing links customer requirements through design to efficient manufacturing through every stage and machine in your factory. And for that, you need the right tool for the job. z
Technology Update
Feature
Article by Philip Ashley
Innovation is crucial for any competitive business, and this is true for the technology rich furniture and cabinet manufacturing industry. With the demand for sustainably manufactured customised furniture and cabinetry, manufacturers need to stay up to date with the latest innovations to meet the changing needs of their customers.
Looking forward to 2025 and beyond, it’s clear that technology will continue to play an important role in manufacturing for the building, furniture, cabinet and timber industries, especially as skilled labour becomes increasingly scarce.
Biesse’s Federico Broccoli recently said, “No matter what goes on with the economy in 2024, woodworking manufacturers need to explore automation. The need for automation and integrated machines is even more of a necessity because of the lack of people.”
Dr. Bernhard Dirr, Managing Director of the German VDMA Woodworking Machinery said, “Despite the high demand for innovation, uncertainty in many countries about the near future is causing customers to hesitate with their technology purchasing decisions. However, we see light on the horizon and at LIGNA next May, we will ensure a revival in demand with innovations and new products.”
Recent Developments
Despite the cutback in attendance at trade shows by some major suppliers, they all need to ‘innovate or evaporate.’ While machinery suppliers rarely share their technologies, a recent ‘coming together’ of seven companies to link their machines means that should you prefer to use several brands, they can be linked
together with IZY, a standardised interface where machines can talk to each other. The companies are Biesse, Burkle, Homag, IMA Schelling, SCM, Weinig and Weber.
Over the last few years, we have seen CNC machines capable of much higher feed speeds from Biesse. More recently, Biesse have
worked with Leitz Tooling here in Australia to develop tooling capable of maintaining quality and dust extraction loads in these extreme high-speed conditions. Also from Biesse, the T-Jet dust mitigation system clears all the dust from your nested panels, speeding up your process.
In edge banding technology, the onceprohibitive cost of a laser edge banding machine has been addressed by KDT, available from LEDA at a much lower cost than you would imagine. Another zeroedge technology and the most recent edge banding development is edge banding applied using Hydrogen technology from Hyfuse in New Zealand, available in Australia through Biesse.
Tech in 2025 and Beyond
What is clear is that digitalization, or the continuation of Industry 4, the internet of things will play an increasingly important role in manufacturing. This is very evident in apps that can be used to provide you with a better picture of your production.
From SCM, a spoilboard management system provides you with up-to-date information on the status of your CNC machine spoilboard, notifying the operator when it needs to be rectified and when it should be replaced. The Weinig App Suite allows monitoring and visualization of your machine data in real time, from any location.
The growing use of technology, and particularly automation, could help make up for continuing problems in finding skilled workers. Jurgen Koppel, CEO of Leitz Tooling, said, “The biggest trend ahead is the increase in automation.” The VDMA states, “Where we are investing and pushing our customers is to open
their minds and look at material handling, automation, and integrated machines, we believe strongly in this; 70-80 percent of the operations that machines do can be taken care of with automation.” A classic case of automation suitable for most cabinet makers is the nesting work cell from suppliers such as Biesse, Multicam, LEDA and Farnese.
In Australia recently, there has been a rapid uptake in the installation of board management systems that feed panels to automated production lines, in some cases from board storage on mezzanines where the boards are lowered directly onto the nesting machine from above, saving an enormous amount of space.
Robotics is a technology that can be beneficial when considering automation in the cabinet shop. While they are expensive to purchase and take some effort to set up, once commissioned, a robot will work 24-7 or as long as material is fed to it.
Other Technologies
3D printing is already much more widespread worldwide than we think but is an emerging furniture manufacturing technology in Australia. It belongs to a type of manufacturing called additive manufacturing, in which three-dimensional geometries produced on a computer (a CAD drawing or a three-dimensional model) are transposed into reality. If you can 3D print a house, you can easily 3D print a solid object such as a chair.
“Progressive (Australian) businesses are now actively looking to further build and advance their manufacturing capabilities by investing in connectivity, automation, and advanced data analytics.”
Advanced Materials could play a part in the future of cabinet making were innovations in design, materials, and technology could shape the future. The integration of technology such as integrated charging ports and touchless and soft-close mechanisms into cabinet design is creating smarter, more convenient solutions for users. AI is a technology that, while yet to be fully understood, could play a role, especially in areas such as predictive analytics to anticipate machine maintenance and downtime, automate processes, reduce manufacturing costs, and address customer needs.
And on top of all that is the issue of sustainability, an essential element in modern cabinet design and manufacture. Sustainable manufacturing achieves waste reduction and power saving goals and identifies and improves recycling practices.
Anecdotal evidence from suppliers suggest that Australian manufacturers have a high uptake of technology. CEO of the Innovative Manufacturing CRC, David Chuter is reported as saying, “Progressive (Australian) businesses are now actively looking to further build and advance their manufacturing capabilities by investing in connectivity, automation, and advanced data analytics.” Innovation shapes cabinet design, driving the craft to greater heights of efficiency, precision, and cost-effectiveness. z

Bespoke craftsmanship meets new technology
Gallery Kitchens, based in Napier, has built a reputation for producing high-quality bespoke kitchens since its establishment by owners Brent Marshall and Sharon James in 2013. Initially relying solely on traditional skills, the company has recently embraced new technology with the acquisition of a Fravol Master M200-23 edge bander from Farnese.
Ben, who has served as production manager for the past two years, shared insights on the transition. "We have always prided ourselves on using traditional non-CNC methods that require high skill levels," he explained.
Serving the Hawkes Bay area, including Napier, Hastings, Havelock North, and CHB, Gallery Kitchens has maintained a competitive edge through exceptional customer service and superior finishes. However, facing a competitive market and growing demand, the company recognised the need to enhance productivity.
About a year ago, they began exploring ways to improve their edge banding process, a critical aspect of their finishing work. After researching options, they chose the Fravol M200-23 Edge Bander from Farnese, a decision that has significantly benefited their operations.
Ben elaborated on the decision-making process: "With a team of seven, we manage kitchen design, manufacture, and installation from our compact 400-squaremeter premises, which include a showroom, offices, spray booth, machine shop, and
assembly area. We had to be creative with our space, and the Fravol, at just 3m by 1.2m, fit perfectly. It integrated quickly into our production line, offering a consistent highquality finish without the time-consuming tasks of rounding and glue cleanup.
The machine is easy to adjust, and the Fravol Glue Tank heats up in just 5-10 minutes. The entire process is now four times faster than our previous method, resulting in a 25-30% boost in production while maintaining our high standards." Ben also highlighted the competitive pricing and exceptional service from the Farnese team as key factors in their decision.
"In a constantly changing market, Gallery Kitchens is always looking to improve and evolve. The purchase of the Fravol has allowed us to increase production and quality of finish, making it a fantastic addition to the business. It will help us continue delivering exceptional service and products," said Ben.
Looking ahead, Ben mentioned that the company is always open to finding new areas for improvement. With a strong network of reputable suppliers to support their service and products, the future looks promising for Gallery Kitchens.

And so, it’s not surprising that KDT, China’s leading manufacturer of high-tech woodworking machines sits in the top five woodworking machine manufacturers in the world.
Guangzhou KDT Machinery Co., Ltd is a corporation public listed in Shenzhen Main Stock Exchange.
KDT and LEDA, on the Move
For over two decades, LEDA Machinery Australia has partnered with KDT, the largest woodworking machinery manufacturer in Asia and the fastest-growing worldwide. Like other major woodworking machine manufacturers, KDT has a huge emphasis on research and development, innovation (over 60 engineering and 300 software patents), and quality control. Through automated manufacturing using advanced robotic assembly, KDT is capable of producing a staggering 36,000 machines every year and every one of them to the same consistent high standards.
Originally made in ‘heavy-industry’ South Korea; KDT moved to China and now has six production plants around the world. Two new factories have been built in China within the last few years, making KDT the largest manufacturer by floor area, and the fifth largest in the world based on revenue in the world.
In early 2018, KDT purchased a 75% share of Masterwood SpA and continue to produce Masterwood machines at that facility in Rimini, Italy. The Masterwood facility also complements KDT’s R&D capabilities. Peter Schilling, one of the three Directors at Leda Machinery said, “Standing in a KDT factory, you get the feeling you could be standing in any woodworking machine producer in Europe.”
Technology and Innovation
Production consistency is achieved through utilising the most advanced and modern CNC manufacturing equipment in automated production lines which can produce more than 28,000 edge-banders, beam saws and panel saws, CNC processing machines, and CNC drilling machines every year.

Welding of machine frames is all done using robots that can produce consistent welds far superior to even the best human. Frames are annealed in ovens to remove residual stresses that can cause cracks and other mechanical complications. There is even an air treatment plant to maintain a consistent factory environment and reduce emissions.
KDT is continually on the move. In the past they used Italian-made HSD electrospindles in their routing machines, but now they build their own. Leda’s Peter Schilling said, “In the four years KDT have been fitting their own spindles to their machines, we’ve never had a failure.”
KDT have bought a number of ancillary companies to ensure complete control and confidence in all the parts they use. And in almost every case, the unit you find on your comparatively small edge banding machine is the same unit you would find in KDT’s larger machines. This top-down approach makes sense if your goal is consistent quality and performance.
In 2010, China developed an innovation infrastructure founded on the establishment of over 100 science and technology parks in many parts of the country including Guangzhou High-tech economic zone in which KDT is located. A recent innovation from KDT is a technology using magnetic drives on their high-speed Beam Saws rather than a traditional rack and pinion. The technology is also used on their highspeed edge banders because pneumatics will not keep up with the panel feed speed. KDT hold many patents including high
speed clamps and intelligent pressure clamping.
LEDA’s philosophy is founded on the principles of research, enterprise, and quality control, guaranteeing that our machinery fulfils the needs of both seasoned professionals looking to upgrade their operations and ambitious amateurs entering the industry. LEDA Machinery can supply KDT machines to suit any woodworking enterprise to size, edge, drill and rout their panels. Single and double-sided edge banding machines can be equipped with PUR and true laser edge technologies. Their innovative magnetic drive can double the feed speed of standard edge banding machine. Nesting and labelling equipment through to complete, automated systems can be supplied, installed and serviced.
After Sales
Peter said, “We are very aware that service is one of the issues all woodworking machine suppliers are judged on. We believe we can back up our industry-leading products with industry-leading after-sales service, training, and advice. Our service technicians and service managers are well-trained and based locally to provide fast and efficient service backup in every state. We are proud to be able to say that 80% of all our service
calls are attended to within 24 hours or less. This support results in most of our machine enquiries coming from existing customers and referrals. They won’t keep coming back if we don’t have their back.”
Forbes reports that for over four decades low labor costs were a mainstay of China’s economic engine but the ‘east-west wage gap is not nearly as compelling as it once was.’ What is clear is that manufacturing technology and innovation amongst China’s top producers is the major contributor to competitively priced machinery and equipment. KDT is a leading woodworking machinery manufacturer in its own right. It is a professional company distributed in Australia by a professional team of industry specialists with significant industry experience. The recent visit to KDT in China will only enhance the experience LEDA Machinery can bring to your business.

One Company, Multi Application
Every year, to the tastes and aromas of classic Italian pizza, gelato and macchiato; Biesse open their doors to existing and potential clients to see for themselves the latest in technical expertise from the industry leader in wood, stone, glass and advanced materials.
Biesse continues to lead the industry with ground-breaking technologies. Three years ago, Biesse introduced High Dynamics CNC machining to Australia. This year, it was ‘HyFuse’ Hydrogen technology for edge banders.
To present Biesse’s wide range of high-tech advantages to industry, Biesse opened their Sydney showroom doors once again in September to showcase their revolutionary new technologies, available across a range of industrial applications.
HD Refined
Three years ago, the F1 of CNC machining, High Dynamics was released to the Australian cabinet making industry. Nesting provides the greatest potential for High Dynamic
processing because speed is one of the most important processing criteria. Biesse Group re-imagined the entire process to achieve a cutting solution where every second of movement had been considered to produce a CNC nesting result of 50 metres a minute with a 12mm tool; high speed angular interpolation (corner) movement; and a positioning speed over 170 metres a minute.
But three years is a long time for Biesse and so a number of refinements have taken place to make the machine even more appealing. Lee Barlow, Oceania Commercial Director - Wood & Systems, said, “Biesse have worked with Leitz Tooling Australia to develop a 10mm, 4-wing cutter matched to the speed of our machine. We can now cut nested parts in a single pass at 42 metres a minute! Three years ago, it had to be a heat shrink chuck; we’re now using a standard chuck to achieve this amazing result.”
To demonstrate the capabilities of the HD machine, a sheet with 22 parts was processed, complete with all drilling, in just three 30
and a half minutes. To further accelerate the process, Biesse ‘tracker jet’ or T-Jet (air blower) technology follows the tool precisely, clearing out the dust, and cooling the cutting tool. Coupled with a new design dust hood with shorter bristles and high-tech anti-ejection fabric, automatically set to the millimetre for near-perfect dust removal on any thickness, the machine was cleaned for the following sheet.
HyFuse Hydrogen technology
A recent innovation from New Zealand offers cabinet makers the opportunity to significantly improve the edge quality of cabinet parts, reduce edge bander maintenance, and cut manufacturing costs, all at a surprisingly competitive price. Hydrogen technology uses the heat generated during the combustion of hydrogen and oxygen to activate the functional layer of zero joint edge banding tape. The result is perfect edge band joints using only 10% of the energy required for hot air technology. HyFuse Hydrogen edge banding is exclusive to Biesse in Australia. The technology can be fitted to any existing machine and transferred to a new Biesse edge bander at any time in the future.
On display in Sydney was a Stream A Smart
edge bander fitted with HyFuse technology. Several machines have already been installed in Australia and a number of additional machines are on order. Biesse is a ‘whole of industry’ supplier and has partnered with edge tape suppliers to make sure stock is available at a competitive price. Lee advises that for an entire kitchen, the additional cost to have HyFuse laser edges is only around $100 because there is no glue and no requirement to clean the gluepot.
That’s Not All
Biesse Opera R (Robotic) profile sanding machines are now capable of sanding the popular shallow shaker door profiles that in the past were difficult for the machine scanners to differentiate. A simple override to tell the machine the depth is only 1.5mm is all that is needed to meet the new design style customers are looking for. Biesse is always working with the market, understanding what manufacturers need to meet their customers’ demands.
As the ‘Master of Materials’ Biesse technology knows few boundaries. Water jets are capable of cutting 40mm stainless steel! Porcelain, aluminium, stone, glass, and advanced materials such as Kevlar. Lee
advises that just before this event, Techni waterjet, previously an Australian company, joined Biesse after the Italian GMM group was acquired by Biesse S.p.A. in December last year. (source: Stone Update News Portal, December 26, 2023) Biesse says the transaction ‘Aims to develop external growth and increase the portfolio generated by machines for processing stone, glass, and other materials by integrating the company’s technologies in these specific segments.’
As the ‘Master of Materials’ Biesse technology knows few boundaries. Water jets are capable of cutting 40mm stainless steel! Porcelain, aluminium, stone, glass, and advanced materials such as Kevlar.
Complementing the Sydney open house were key suppliers including Cadmate, Flexijet, CabMaster, 3D Kitchen, ALPHACAM, Planit, Pytha and Staircon. Hardware suppliers Hettich and Wilson & Bradley; Materials suppliers Surteco, Polytec and Nikpol. Airtight, Busch, Leitz, Finlease, and Evo. Michael Bullock, CEO of Biesse Australia and New Zealand said, “Sydney is where we will showcase our technology and expertise, this time every year. We’d like to think it’s an industry event with so many partners involved, and this year, 2,600 visitors from a wide range of industries, here to see what Biesse can do for their business.”

Sealers Guide
2024 SEALERS GUIDE
Sealing natural stone is an important step in protecting and maintaining its appearance and longevity, especially in a country like Australia where various climate conditions, from hot and dry to humid, can affect stone surfaces. Supplier Magazine’s 2024 Sealers Guide groups together the various types of stone and their applications along with the recommended sealer to assist installers in finding the right product for each job.
Why seal natural stone?
Sealing natural stone is important for several key reasons, all of which contribute to maintaining the stone’s integrity, appearance, and longevity. Here’s why sealing is an essential part of caring for natural stone surfaces:
Protection against stains
Natural stones, such as granite, marble, limestone, sandstone, and travertine, are porous materials. This means they can absorb liquids, oils, and other substances that come into contact with the surface. Over time, substances like coffee, wine, juice, grease, and even water can seep into the stone and cause permanent stains or discoloration. Sealing creates a protective barrier that prevents these substances from penetrating the stone, making it easier to clean up spills and keep the surface looking pristine.
Enhanced durability and longevity
Sealing helps protect the stone from environmental factors that can degrade its surface over time. For example:
Water Damage: Water absorption can weaken the structure of the stone, particularly in porous materials like limestone and sandstone.
Freeze/Thaw Damage: In areas with cold winters, water that enters the stone can freeze, expand, and crack the surface.
UV Damage: The sun’s UV rays can cause fading, especially on softer stones like marble or sandstone. A good sealer will help protect against UV degradation, preserving the stone’s colour and texture.
By preventing moisture from penetrating and reducing wear from environmental factors, sealing helps extend the life of your stone surfaces.
Sealers Guide
Prevents mould and mildew growth
Natural stone surfaces in high-humidity areas, such as bathrooms, kitchens, or outdoor spaces, are susceptible to mould and mildew growth. Moisture that seeps into the stone can create the ideal environment for mould to thrive, leading to unsightly stains and potential health risks. Sealing helps prevent moisture infiltration, thereby reducing the chances of mould and mildew growth.
Easier cleaning and maintenance
Sealed stone surfaces are much easier to clean and maintain compared to unsealed
ones. The protective barrier prevents dirt, dust, and grime from settling into the pores of the stone, making the surface less likely to stain and easier to wipe down. Additionally, since water and spills bead up on the surface rather than soaking in, cleaning is much less labour intensive.
Preserves the stone’s appearance
Sealing helps maintain the natural beauty of the stone by preserving its colour and texture. For polished stones like granite and marble, sealing ensures that the stone maintains its shine and glossy appearance.
For more matte or textured stones, such as travertine or sandstone, sealing helps keep the surface from becoming dull or discoloured over time. It also reduces the risk of unsightly etching or scratching caused by spills or contact with acidic substances.
Increases resistance to abrasion
Stone surfaces, especially in high-traffic areas (e.g., floors, countertops, and outdoor pathways), are subject to wear and tear from foot traffic, furniture, and everyday use. Sealing helps increase the stone’s resistance to abrasion and reduces the likelihood of scratching or scuffing.
Make sure the sealer is suitable for the local climate—some products are formulated to withstand the intense sun and coastal conditions, particularly in regions like Queensland or New South Wales. Ultimately, the correct sealer is a tailored solution for the type of stone you are using, its location, and the environmental factors that affect it. Using the wrong product can lead to poor protection, unsatisfactory results, and unnecessary costs. Make sure to consult a professional or manufacturer guidelines to select the best sealer for your specific stone surface. z

Efficient solutions for handling and installing porcelain
The rising popularity of porcelain in the Australian market, favoured by architects, designers, and consumers alike, is largely due to its safety and sustainability benefits. As interest continues to grow, it has become increasingly important for stonemasons, fabricators and installers to find safe and efficient ways to install porcelain. These slabs are not only heavy and highly tensioned, they can also break if not handled correctly and can be difficult to manage safely without proper support. Traditional methods often fall short, increasing the risk of breakage and injury. As a result, specialised handling equipment has become essential to ensure safe, efficient installations while reducing strain on workers and minimising the risk of damage.
Q: What’s the best way to transport large-format porcelain from the factory to the jobsite?
A: Safely transporting large-format porcelain slabs requires the right equipment to ensure the material remains secure and undamaged. Using transport frames like the Diarex TF2000, which is designed with forklift compatibility, and manual manoeuvrability options, such as a dolly with wheels, can help move slabs efficiently both in the workshop and during transportation.
Once on-site, handling equipment like Omni Cubed’s Pro-Cart AT1 and ProCart 2 can make moving and positioning heavy slabs much easier. These carts offer stability, smooth manoeuvrability, and secure clamping to keep slabs safe during transport across rough terrain. For more delicate areas, such as cut-outs for sinks and faucets, the Omni Cubed Sink Hole Saver provides essential reinforcement, protecting these fragile sections from breakage during handling and installation.
When it’s time to position the slab for installation, tools like the
vacuum lifter come in handy. The Grabo’s powerful suction technology allows for secure lifting and precise placement, ensuring that even the largest slabs can be installed with ease and accuracy. By using the right equipment throughout the process, you can safely transport and install largeformat porcelain slabs without damage or hassle.
Nemo Grabo
Safety
Q: What benefits does using professional handling equipment offer installers?
A: Professional handling equipment offers key benefits like improved safety by reducing manual lifting and the risk of injury. Ergonomically designed tools distribute weight evenly, making it easier to manage heavy slabs. They also increase efficiency, allowing a smaller team to move slabs quickly and precisely, saving time and reducing delays. Lastly, proper equipment protects the material from damage, ensuring slabs reach their final position in perfect condition, which enhances the quality of the installation and reduces the chance of costly reworks, boosting client satisfaction.
Q: What adhesive should you use for a porcelain installation?
A: Porcelain can be tricky to bond due to its minimal porosity, which offers limited surface
area for adhesives to grip. When choosing an adhesive for porcelain, it’s important to select one specifically formulated for ceramics or porcelain. These adhesives typically contain special additives to enhance adhesion and prevent discoloration over time.
While there are several reliable options, such as Integra Rapid, Integra Zero, Superior Gold and Diarex EVOPLUS, Integra’s Surface Bonder Ultra stands out. It provides excellent versatility, bonding securely to porcelain, ceramics, and sintered stone. With its high
UV resistance, it prevents yellowing, and its slight flexibility ensures a strong bond even when the material expands or contracts due to temperature changes. This makes it an ideal choice for porcelain installations.
Q: Where can installers learn more about using this equipment?

The impacts of work-related injuries and fatalities are far reaching, affecting individuals, families and the broader community. Safe Work Australia data indicates that in 2023, 200 workers in Australia were fatally injured at work, and 139,000 serious workers’ compensation claims were made.
This year’s National Safe Work Month theme, safety is everyone’s business, calls on workplaces across the nation to make safety their business. This theme highlights the collective benefit of safe work practices to everyone in the workplace by reinforcing work health and safety (WHS) as a fundamental principle and right.
Making safety a priority and taking action to ensure your workplace is free of physical and psychological harm helps to keep workers safe. Every worker, across all industries and occupations, deserves to come home safe.
Safety is everyone’s business
“This year we want workplaces to think about safety as part of the everyday business of their workplace—creating a safe and healthy workplace that is free from physical and psychological harm benefits everyone,” Safe Work Australia Chief Executive Officer, Marie Boland
Proactively managing WHS risks involves thinking about what could happen if someone was exposed to a hazard and how likely it is to happen. You have a duty to manage health and safety risks to keep workers and other people (e.g. visitors) safe.
Safety doesn't happen by chance or guesswork. It requires risk management and doing the WHS fundamentals well.
• Proactively manage WHS risk. It is not a set and forget process.
• Genuinely consult with workers throughout the risk management process. Workers have important 'on the job' insights and experience that can help to identify hazards and make better decisions about how to manage them.
• Train and support workers to identify and report hazards and understand the control measures in place to keep them safe.
And remember - safety is everyone's business.
1. Identify hazards, then assess the risks
Hazards are the things or situations that could cause physical or psychological harm, or both. There are a range of ways you might identify the hazards in your workplace.
• Talk to your workers and their representatives.
• Survey your workers.
• Develop reporting mechanisms for workers to report hazards.
• Observe the workplace, working conditions, the way work is performed, and the way people behave and interact.
• Think about the plant, substances and equipment used.
• Review your records on injuries, illnesses and incidents, complaints, inspection reports, absenteeism, hours of work/overtime.
• Educate yourself about the types of hazards commonly found in your industry and other similar workplaces.

Safety
Even if workers haven’t raised concerns, don’t assume everything is okay. Are there reasons why workers might not be raising concerns with you? (e.g. they might not think it’s a priority). Make sure you actively encourage workers to report hazards.
Once hazards have been identified, assess the risks they create. Assessing risks helps you understand how severe the risks are and where you need to do something to manage them. Consider things like who might be affected, what could happen, how it could happen, how serious the harm could be, how likely it is, and what might make things worse.
Consider hazards together rather than individually. Workers may be exposed to more than one hazard at a time, and this may increase the risks.
You may not need to assess risks if the hazards, risks, and control measures are well-known. However, a risk assessment is mandatory for certain activities and hazards.
2. Control the risks
The most effective way to control risks is to eliminate them (e.g. redesign work to stop doing a hazardous task or remove the hazard from the workplace). If it isn’t reasonable in the circumstances to do this, you must minimise the risks.
There are lots of different ways you can control risks. Use the most effective and reliable control or combination of controls. The hierarchy of control measures helps too. Keep aiming to minimise the risk until it is not reasonable in the circumstances.
Talk to your workers about possible control measures and what might work best. Workers are likely to have good ideas or insights based on their knowledge and experience.
Consider hazards and control measures collectively. It will help prevent controlling one risk which inadvertently makes another risk worse.
3. Monitor and review - It’s an ongoing process
Proactively managing WHS risks is not ‘set and forget.’ Closely monitor and regularly review control measures to ensure they are working as planned. Consider if there is something more or different you need to do to minimise the risks further.
A review is required:
• if monitoring shows that the control measures are not working
• before you make a change at the workplace that might create new risks that need different controls
• if you identify new hazards or risks
• if workers raise concerns, or
• if a health and safety representative requests a review.
You should keep a record of your risk management process, including your consultation with workers. This allows you to demonstrate you have met your duties and will assist you to monitor and review the identified hazards and controls you have put in place.

Talking Business
Article by Philip Ashley
Great people create a great business
Compared to some machinery suppliers, Farnese is a relative newcomer, the ‘new kid on the block.’ However, age does not always equate to high performance and Alex Farnese has some sound advice for manufacturers based on almost three decades of solid commitment to the stone, and more recently, woodworking industries.
Twenty-odd years ago, as a recently graduated 22-year old mechanical engineer fresh out of University, Alex Farnese was ready to take on the world. He’d been working his way through university parttime at Australian Marble Machinery when he was presented with the opportunity to buy the business. Alex, who knew the work but didn’t know how to run a business, admits it was a struggle. Alex accepted the challenge and like most new entrepreneurs, learned the hard way.
Looking back, he reveals it was very difficult in the beginning. He was the designer, the accountant, the painter, the welder and the electrician. With only a loan from his parents he had a limited cash flow and like many fledgling businesses, was just making wages. Alex admits he made some mistakes along the way, mostly in his early years. He says, “Like Thomas Edison, I found out a thousand ways how not to make a lightbulb.” After a few years the cashflow improved, he found some good people and in 2000 Farnese was founded.
Continued Growth
Around that time Alex met some people from Vietnam and started to have machines made there under a joint venture agreement. At that time, 98 per cent of the equipment sold in Australia was sourced from Europe. Within a few years Alex was able to buy the Vietnamese manufacturer that still produces Farnese machines today. The factory is operated under Farnese’s strict quality controls and produces a quality product, highly regarded by Farnese’s many repeat customers.Axes)
Farnese Australia supply a complete range of highly regarded stone processing machinery and equipment. Farnese are the only designer and manufacturer of stone cutting and polishing machinery in Australia. Alex says, “Our machines have found homes all over Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.” Farnese’s range of machines satisfies the diverse needs of the stone industry, and includes bridge saws, CNC machining centres, lifting equipment, edge polishing machines, dust extraction units, water recycling and slab lifting equipment.
Recently, TQ Stone Products ‘joined forces’ with Farnese Australia to become a major force in the marketplace for Australian stone fabricators. John Di rosso, Managing Director of TQ Stone Products said, “To say we’re excited about the journey ahead and the possibilities that it offers would be an understatement. We’ll be able to offer an even stronger presence and greater support to our past and future customer network.

Talking Business
With mobile showrooms on the road in five Australian states and New Zealand, servicing the country’s major cities and surrounds, we’ll never be far from your door.”
Alex’s ‘Business Insights’ Alex is happy to share some insights into what he believes makes a good business. He said, “As the years went on I got lucky and found really great people that worked with me, and we grew the business to what it is today. ‘A great business can only be created by great people.’ Unlike many distributors in Australia and New Zealand we are firstly machine manufacturers, so we know our products very intimately. We believe that technical knowledge and support are crucial attributes of a reliable and trusted supplier. We are able to design and produce to customer’s requirements when needed. It is vital that you ‘know your product and have complete control over your supply. Make sure you build strong bonds with your suppliers.’
Alex continues, “About 6 years ago we branched out and added woodworking machinery with the acquisition of Proform in New Zealand. Steve Fifield was the owner of Proform CNC in Wellington, and we struck a deal. Steve moved to Sydney and became General Manager for Farnese Australia, while in New Zealand Rob Hutchings became the General Manager for New Zealand.
‘You need to have the right people in your business in both sales and technical departments.’ In 2021 we purchased Masterwood Australia and later Brewer machinery (Malcolm Brewer) in Perth to expand our reach in Australia. In December we will be launching our new website which will have all our divisions in one place,” Alex advises.
‘Support the customer after sales and not just before.’
“We have warehouses and service centres in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland and Wellington and we have a strong emphasis on service and design. It is my belief that an important key to success is service. ‘Support the customer after sales and not just before.’ We want to be there when the customer needs us so that they think of us as their partner for their growth. ‘Make sure you have enough spares to give the customer confidence that you can service their machine right away.’ We have done this in the stone industry for 30 years and we continue to do it in all aspects of our ventures.” Alex says.
Alex Farnese migrated to Australia with his family from Sicily in 1989. To say he has made a mark in this part of the World would be an understatement. Farnese Australia is defined by the quality of their people who are resolved to provide the best support in Australia and New Zealand. Alex advises, “Be committed to your values and integrity because there will be times when you will be tempted to take the easy way out, but that might not be the right way.” z

Efficiency in every edge
North Coast Stone gains precision and efficiency with Comandulli Ruby installation.
North Coast Stone a family-owned and operated business based on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast, has built a reputation for quality and craftsmanship in stonemasonry. Founded in 2006 as a partnership between two families, North Coast Stone brings decades of construction experience to every project, supported by a team of fully qualified stonemasons. Recently, they took their operations to the next level by integrating the Comandulli Ruby edge polishing machine, facilitated by CDK Stone. This advanced machinery has significantly improved precision and workflow efficiency, allowing North Coast Stone to deliver high-quality finishes across a range of stone materials while maintaining the craftsmanship and dedication they’re known for.
The need to operate multiple machines and make complex manual adjustments often slows down production processes for stonemasons, leading to increased labour costs and potential inconsistencies in finish quality. These challenges drive a demand for machinery that can streamline operations
without compromising on the high standards required in the industry.
The Ruby by Comandulli answers these industry needs with a powerful combination of versatility, precision, and user-centred design. This compact yet highly functional machine incorporates advanced features that redefine edge polishing.
“With its easy-to-use software, we’re able to make precise adjustments as needed without interrupting production.”

Discovering Stone
Insights from Marmomac 2024
Article by Sareen Stone
Global stone innovation takes centre stage
Marmomac 2024 once again proved why it remains the world's premier natural stone exhibition. With 1,485 exhibitors from 55 countries and 50,000 visitors, this year's event showcased the latest innovations in natural stone technology, design trends, and sustainable practices.
Shifting design trends and technological advances
A notable shift in market preferences was evident at this year's show, with a return to beige and cream tones, marking a departure from the grey-dominated palette of recent years. "The advancement in manufacturing technology has revolutionised the way we approach stone finishing", says Duncan Blyth, Managing Director of Sareen Stone. "New machinery capabilities are enabling the creation of unique textures and finishes that add remarkable depth and character to natural stone materials".
This technological evolution is particularly significant for the Australian market, where architects and designers constantly seek innovative ways to incorporate natural stone into their projects. The enhanced ability to create diverse finishes opens new possibilities for creative expression in both residential and commercial applications.
Innovation in three dimensions
Among the most striking displays at Marmomac 2024 were the innovative applications of natural stone in threedimensional design. Exhibits like ‘The Eye’ and ‘The Painting’ demonstrated how traditional stone materials can be transformed into contemporary artistic expressions, pushing the boundaries of conventional stone applications.
Sustainability at the forefront
Discussions with suppliers revealed an industry-wide commitment to sustainable practices, including localised material sourcing to reduce transport emissions and advanced water recycling systems in cutting and finishing processes. These initiatives reflect the industry's dedication to
reducing its environmental footprint while maintaining premium quality standards.
Global supply chain considerations
The event also addressed current industry challenges, particularly regarding global shipping logistics. The ongoing closure of the Suez Canal has prompted alternative shipping routes via the Cape of Good Hope, impacting delivery times and supply chain planning. This situation underscores the importance of strong international partnerships and strategic inventory management.
Industry leadership through experience
As a long-standing attendee of Marmomac, Blyth emphasises that innovation in the natural stone industry is cumulative. "It's not just about what you see in a single year", he notes. "True innovation comes from years of relationship building, trust, and collaborative development with suppliers".
For Australian industry leaders like Sareen Stone, the insights gained at Marmomac will influence future product offerings and strengthen their ability to deliver innovative stone solutions. Their commitment to sourcing new products, developing unique finishes, and adapting to current design trends ensures they remain at the forefront of natural stone innovation in Australia. z

ICutting-Edge tech propels ASC Flatpacks to new heights
n 2014, Andrew Steel was at a crossroads. Working as a foreman for a medium sized cabinetmaking business, he found himself juggling full time work with weekend side projects in cabinetry. Encouraged by his family, Andrew took a leap to start his own business. Initially, his operation was modest—a small section of a factory with basic tools. Today, ASC Flatpacks is thriving, thanks to the integration of Cabinetry.Online technology.
From basic tools to high-tech solutions
Andrew’s journey started humbly with a small edge bander and panel saw. “I knew I needed CNC because I did not want to hand drill and cut everything by hand”. His first taste came with a basic CNC that required manual change of drill bits. As the business grew, so did the need for more sophisticated machinery and software.
This need was met by integrating Cabinets by Computer’s software into his operations. “I remembered WoodCAM from my early days as an apprentice.” Travis from CBC set up the software while introducing Andrew to online ordering with Cabinetry.Online—a suggestion that catapulted ASC Flatpacks to industry prominence.
In his early days, Andrew often grappled with manual orders and errors that arose from miscommunications. "Every other flat packer I know has got to go by paperwork or a drawing handover, and that's where mistakes happen in the manufacturing side". In contrast, the shift with Cabinetry.Online has virtually eliminated these issues. “With the online system, it's clear what they order is what they get." This transformation has elevated the accuracy of work and set ASC Flatpacks apart as a leader in the industry.
Game changing features: 3D preview tool and benchtop specifier
One standout feature that has revolutionised Andrew's workflow is Cabinetry.Online's 3D Product Visualiser. “A client orders a 300mm wide cupboard and puts 2 doors on it, they'll look at it instantly and go, that looks silly.
The 3D preview helps them visualise what they’re ordering”. This tool allows clients to see their designs in real-time but also helps them make informed decisions about dimensions, cabinet composition, and overall aesthetics.
Another invaluable feature is the Benchtop Specifier. “The benchtop ordering component is so good, just for the clients to visualise and go, I guess it does need to be seen on that end and that's the way I want my join". It allows clients to customise benchtops down to the last detail, streamlining the process, eliminating
guesswork, and reducing the potential for mistakes.
Exceptional support and service
Andrew commends the support of the Cabinetry.Online team. "The support is amazing. Every time we put information into the portal or a ticket, they get replied to very quickly. I can't think of anything that we've put in on a job that's a problem that hasn't been sorted out".
Andrew particularly appreciates the ticketing system and remote support. "Sometimes we just leave them to it, walk away and come back and there's an email or a message saying you're good to go. It's fantastic". This level of support allows ASC Flatpacks to maintain a high standard of service and keep operations running smoothly.
Growth and future plans
Andrew’s journey is inspirational. His strategic decisions, bolstered by Cabinetry. Online, have paved the way for a future full of potential. ASC Flatpacks is prepared to double, or even triple, its output. “It's just a win every which way I look.”
“We are now signing on with an advertising agency to focus on social media and Google ads to chase even more opportunities. My goal is to at least double our output, and I can see us comfortably handling triple the current workload with our new setup”.
Andrew Steel's story showcases the power of innovation and strategic planning. If you see parallels in Andrew's journey with your own, it’s time to explore what Cabinetry.Online can do for you. Contact Cabinetry.Online today to discuss how their technology can transform your business. z

A standout feature of the design is the drop-down circular ceiling element, serving both as a visual centrepiece and a functional component by cleverly concealing air vents and speakers. This choice helps maintain the sleek and uncluttered look of the interior, further enhancing the salon’s modern and luxurious feel.
For the styling benches, the design team at Edge Design Consultants selected Corian Cosmos Prima, using its reverse side to offer exceptional durability and a distinctive galaxy-like appearance. This material choice fosters a serene and relaxing atmosphere for clients, while the
limited palette of four dark-toned materials creates an illusion of space and coherence within the property.
Strategic lighting is crucial in accentuating the textures of the materials used, creating an inviting and visually appealing space that feels more like a day spa than a traditional salon. The careful placement of lights highlights the unique textures and finishes, contributing to a tranquil and luxurious environment.
The project’s success also underscores the importance of skilled installation, particularly when working with specialised materials like Corian. The durability, practicality, and aesthetic versatility of Corian, along with the expertise of the installers, ensure the salon maintains its stunning appearance and functionality over time. This project highlights the value of combining aesthetic innovation with practical durability to create a luxurious yet functional commercial space in Granville, NSW. z
