Upfront Are you selling to yourself or your customers? According to Dr Dennis Price of Ganador Management Solutions, retail success necessitates walking in your customers' shoes. He says people (your customers) are inherently selfish and find it difficult to appreciate a different perspective – and this has consequences for how you manage your businesses. His suggestions include: • don’t buy the product(s) you like because you like it – buy what your customers want; • it doesn’t matter what you think the value of a certain item is; the value is whatever the customer thinks it is; • when facing a difficult customer, even though you know they aren’t correct, what matters is that they think they are. According to the statistics he found, around 80% of managers think they deliver great service but only 8% of customers agree. The actual percentages are not important but the magnitude of the gap is significant.

Letter to the editor Finding a solution to permanent pile reversal shading (PPRS). I’m sure you’ve heard of it, and I’m also sure you’ve heard that it is an unexplained phenomenon. Well I’ve got some news, it can be explained and, in fact, the answer to this carpet event that plagues the industry worldwide is quite simple. I’ve spent a lot of the last 30 years trying to find a reason and a solution to this problem. The answer arrived seven months ago, and I was amazed at just how simple and straight forward the solution was. In fact, it’s right there in front of us. So I’ve spent the last seven months testing my theory for the PPRS phenomenon on every type of tufted construction and fibre mix that I could find. The process has been tried on used carpet as well as brand new, and the end result has always been the same – PPRS can be reversed and altered. I, like many others, have tried steaming PPRS with only limited success, the reason being it only bends the fibres and does not actually change the direction, the yarn needs to lean towards. I must now emphasise that my process does not involve any steaming or ironing of the carpet pile what so ever. I can also assure you that PPRS is not caused by magnetic fields, wiring, plumbing or any household chemicals etc…., it’s random nature is set in place during manufacturing. Because, for obvious reasons, I’ve had to be a little secretive about my PPRS findings, I’m left to wonder who else if anybody has arrived at a similar conclusion, and how to take the next step and incorporate a new PPRS resistant process into manufacturing. Since 2003 I’ve been active as a consultant and arbitrator, during this time I’ve inspected many PPRS complaints, some have been replaced for a variety of reasons, but the majority have remained on the floor. The standard industry mantra to itself is the same to consumers – it’s a phenomenon and it’s out of our control. This is an excuse I used to use, but one I’ll never use again, mainly because it is simply not correct. For the time being I’ll continue to improve what I know already works, and pursue ways of reducing PPRS in the factory well before carpet reaches the consumer.

Gerflor has welcomed a new State Manager for Queensland with the appointment of Neil Warden. Neil brings 18 years experience in sales and business development roles to his new position. His most recent role was managing the national and New Zealand sales for Rephouse Australia. “I have worked in sales management, international business development and sales roles within the construction, commercial flooring and sports flooring sectors for the last 18 years, with additional experience in project management and installation practices,” Neil Warden said. Gerflor’s size coupled with its diverse offer of quality product ranges attracted Mr Warden’s interest.

National Equipment / Intafloors training seminar On a rare visit to Australia from the USA, National Equipment’s Vice President, Kevin Hawthorne, and training and technical services manager, Mike Ward ran a training day for the Intafloors group members from across Australia. The training day took place at the Intafloors Trade Depot in Sydney where the senior staff members from all Intafloors groups were able to see Mike demonstrate machinery such as the 3425-W grinder/ edger (the stand-up alternative to using a hand grinder), the 3395 shot blaster, 9920 scarifier and the 5700 and 7700 battery operated ride on floor strippers.

Neil Warden

“It really does allow us to provide solutions across a vast range of applications, which in turn provides our clients with opportunities to grow their businesses,” he said.

To the Intafloors staff that hadn’t used the 3395 before, the shot blaster was one of the stand-out demonstrations of the day and left quite an impression. With the blasting capacity of 37m2 per hour and the blasting width of 203mm, the 3395 made short work of the coating and, when attached to a National 3474 HEPA vacuum, it separated the dust from the shot. The National Equipment Training Day only happens every 18 months to two years and is always enjoyed by the Intafloors group members as there is always opportunity to learn something new about each product no matter the release date. The day is open to installers by invitation only. Contact Intafloors with expressions of interest or details of the next date.

Taking carpet shopping into the digital age Australian flooring retailer Onlinecarpet – www.onlinecarpet. com.au – has taken carpet shopping into the digital age, offering significant savings to internet-savvy consumers. Owner/Manager Justin Mace noted the importance of online shopping. “The convenience of shopping online is well known and we embrace this fact.” Justin believes his is currently the only company providing consumers with a complete range of online shopping services in the carpet industry. “The ability to get a quote online through a basic interface makes it easy to compare pricing with competitors,” said Justin. “Pricing on all products is prominently displayed making comparison an easy task.” Pricing is also kept intentionally transparent. “Our clients report that they like the way we present a breakdown of our quotes, all items are individually listed and costed.”

8 Flooring June/July 2013

Online shoppers have the option of visiting the showroom to see products in person and take home samples as required. Going through the whole process online is still an option, however. “Some clients prefer to shop entirely online and select products using our high quality imagery and specification included with every product,” according to Justin, who sees the lack of salespeople as a bonus for shoppers looking to avoid being pressured to buy. The company supports local manufacturing by making an effort to stock mostly Australian made products. “Onlinecarpet has seen continual growth since we launched three and a half years ago,” he added. The company installs in metropolitan Melbourne and Sydney, and supplies Australia-wide, with plans to expand further in the next 12 months.

Demand for wood flooring A research report titled “Wood Flooring: A Global Strategic Business Report” announced by Global Industry Analysts Inc., provides a comprehensive review of market trends, issues, drivers, company profiles, mergers, acquisitions and other strategic industry activities. Source: Watch List News The report provides market estimates and projections for all major geographic markets such as the US, Canada, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East/Africa and Latin America. Despite accounting for a minor share in the overall flooring market, wood flooring remains a popular flooring option worldwide. High cost associated with wood flooring has been a major hurdle to its widespread adoption. Demand for wood flooring depends heavily on construction activity, which has a taken a severe hit due to the recent economic downturn. The global market for wood flooring witnessed significant declines during the recession-hit years. While demand recovered quickly in Asia-Pacific and other

emerging markets, growth remains sluggish in most developed markets. Demand in traditional markets for wood flooring such as the US and Europe remains subdued due to the impact of economic crisis in these markets. Following significant turbulence during the past few years, the US economy appears to be stabilising. This augurs well for the growth of the wood flooring market. As such, the market witnessed a recovery in 2010, driven primarily by replacement demand. Meanwhile, the European market has been witnessing mixed fortunes, with some markets registering growth while others are reeling under tough economic conditions. The ‘green’ image associated with wood flooring provides the necessary impetus for demand growth. Unlike other flooring options, production of wood flooring does not consume large quantities of fossil fuel that results in greenhouse emissions. With growing concerns over pollution and its

impact on the environment, consumers are increasingly seeking building materials that are renewable and environmentally safe. As a result, some house owners, builders, designers, and architects are opting for wood flooring. Manufactured floors/ engineered flooring is growing in popularity in comparison with solid wood floors. Major factors driving growth in demand for engineered flooring include rising demand for flooring options that can be used in a wider range of applications. Besides, environmentalists are encouraging reduction in the consumption of forest and plantation resources, which is possible with the use of engineered floors. Demand is also increasing for pre-finished wood flooring

products that eliminate the need for scrapping and rubbing at the installation site. Most of these products are designed with a self-lock capability to avoid messy glues that take time to cure. Wood flooring is witnessing significant competition from laminate flooring. However, much of the impact of growth in popularity of laminate has been on mosaic wood flooring. As stated by the new market research report on Wood Flooring, Asia-Pacific represents the largest as well as the fastest growing market for wood flooring worldwide. Major Asian manufacturers and consumers of wood flooring include China and South-East Asian countries. China represents the largest as well as the fastest growing market for wood flooring in Asia-Pacific.

News Yes Bamboo announces national distributor Yes Bamboo has announced it has appointed long time timber whole sale company, Swan Le Messurier, as its stocking national distributor for its H3 treated bamboo decking and screening products. Sydney based company Swans has been supplying quality timber products to the Australian market for over eighty years. “We have been noticing the increasing presence in the floorcovering shops of a range of bamboo products being proposed for external use but to date none which comply with Australian Standards,” said director of Yes Bamboo, Justin de Voss. “To use timber externally above ground in Australia the material needs to be Naturally Durability Class 1 or Class 2. If it is not then, as per Australian Standards AS 1604, it needs to be H3 treated. “Bamboo as a fibre is at best Durability Class 3 so it is essential that it is treated appropriately for external use, especially in Australia's harsh and ever changing climate.”

Kuberit celebrates 150 years Küberit Profile Systems can look back on a history lasting 150 years. Founded in 1863, Küberit is now a market leader in the manufacturing of profile systems for floorcoverings such as laminate, engineered wood and cork as well as profiles made of aluminium, brass and stainless steel for carpets and resilient floorcoverings. Küberit produced the first flooring trims using metal in 1920. In the following years Küberit produced and distributed flooring profiles made from metal and plastic at the same time. However, by the end of the 1980s the production of plastic had stopped and the production was focused on metal. In the 1990s Küberit was able to acquire some leading manufacturers of laminate and wood floorings from Europe and could establish itself as an important supplier in the flooring branch. Kuberit’s wide assortment of standard and special products consists of more than 105 worldwide patents including such products as stair nosings for the

refurbishment of stair cases or functional flooring trims for public areas. Küberit offers flooring profiles of different materials such as stainless steel, brass or anodized aluminium and many finishes including coated profiles with real wood veneer, wood decor foil and digitally printed surfaces in highest abrasion classes. More than 12,000 different articles for every kind of application are available. For many profiles the installer can choose between variations as undrilled,

centrally countersunk drilled, laterally countersunk drilled or self-adhesive. A further 18 profile systems for parquet, laminate and cork floorings are also available. Design on display Australia's longest-running design and architecture event, designEX, opened with style and excitement at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre at the end of May. Over 10,000 industry professionals flooded through the doors to see an excellent line up of global and local brands on the designEX show floor, hear from keynote speakers such as Michael Young and Patrick Frey at the Business of Design Seminar Series and enjoy stunning design collaborations on display at Hives and Nest13. Flooring was represented with a variety of companies both large and small – Karndean, Forbo, Polyflor, Renaissance Parquet, Hurford Hardwood, Birrus Matting,

12 Flooring June/July 2013

Pergo Floors and BBL Vinyl amongst others. Forbo launched the Next Generation of Marmoleum and a swag of new product ranges including Flotex Metro Tiles at designEX. The 90m2 metre stand was a tribute to the colour and design of Marmoleum expertly installed by Gordon and Kyle from Gordon Scott Flooring Melbourne. International Floor Coverings featured its latest collection, Villa Natralis, a collection of luxurious 100% pure un-dyed wool rich carpets, all inherently soil resistant. This durable woven carpet is the result of weaving methods dating back hundreds of years with graded fibres spun and woven on traditional Wilton looms.

This year Karndean Designflooring exhibited at the expo to illustrate the design possibilities of its Flotex sheet floorcoverings, LooseLay and Designflooring products. Showcasing the Flotex Sottsass collection in a uniquely creative way, the Karndean stand was framed by an oversized image of Ettore Sottsass printed onto the Flotex product to demonstrate the customisable design possibilities that can be created with Flotex. Ettore Sottsass was the head of Italian design studio, Sottsass Associati, who along with his partner and head of studio, Christopher Redfern, created the four contemporary designs that comprise the highdefinition Flotex Sottsass collection.

Karndean also provided the flooring – LooseLay Merbau – for the Ketel One Bar at designEX which was located directly opposite its stand and proved to be the place to be for visitors to the expo. Karndean LooseLay is an award winning, glueless version of Designflooring. As its name suggests, LooseLay works like free lay carpet tiles, using a combination of suction and friction to secure the product to the floor below. In addition to these displays, Karndean’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Alex Stock presented in the designEX Seminar Series speaking about the progress of vinyl plank and tile designflooring. His presentation explained the specification of the contemporary material as

an alternative to conventional stone and timber products, from the perspective of the interior designer and architect. Hurford Hardwood has released an exciting wideboard overlay product that can be installed over existing sheet subfloors when height is of concern. This 14mm product is available in 130mm and 180mm, which all can be installed using a combination of adhesive and secret fixing. 14mm flooring is also available in all Hurford Australian species and grades to give versatility of colour and feature for every application. Precision milled and graded these products are designed to be used over a solid subfloor, such as plywood or particleboard. Polyflor showcased two different product ranges at DesignEX – Pearlazzo and Expona Design, including a new range of Expona Design colours. Both products are GreenTag certified (Pearlazzo is Gold rated and Expona is Silver rated), 100% recyclable and are PUR lifetime polish free. Pearlazzo PUR is ideal for healthcare, educational facilities and retail outlets. Available in 24 contemporary colours, this high quality range offers outstanding durability, is abrasion resistant and provides a low-cost polish-free maintenance for the lifetime of the flooring. Expona Design is available in 80 shades in realistic reproductions of wood, metal and stone. The environmentally friendly flooring collection is phthalate free, easy-care yet hard-wearing and is suitable for everyday use. Renaissance Parquet is a manufacturer of high-end custom hand-crafted parquet and wood floors. Based in Melbourne and selling and installing worldwide, Renaissance engineers both parquet and strip flooring in a variety of timbers including Australian hardwoods and French oak.

Quality, commitment and vitality For the flooring industry in Asia, the three days from 26 to 28 March were days of great performance, important achievements and a variety of new ideas when DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR 2013 took place in Shanghai, China. As officially announced during the Wood Flooring Forum, hosted by both DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR and the Chinese National Forestry Industry Association, the floor sales volumes certified in China in 2012 were 377 million m2 (performed by 1,518 Chinese manufacturers), while the actual estimation of total sales amount would be around 500 million m2. The Chinese market (both construction and flooring) is developing fast and facing important changes. From being one of the world’s main production bases, China has

14 Flooring June/July 2013

become one of the biggest consumers of floors in the world, with products and services quality consumers’ standards rising very fast as well. In general, China’s economic transformation resulting from urbanisation and industrialisation is happening at ten times the speed of the first country to urbanise (UK) and at 100 times the scale, which is an historical record. All regions of the world are contributing to the growth in urban flooring demand but China’s share will be the highest one (38.3%) between 2010-2025 (McKinsey, June 2012), making the potential of this market evident. The show launched an original marketing campaign focused precisely on the new flooring products and materials on the market.

“InnovAction flooring” by DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR, won the praise of the many journalists who visited the show as well as the attention from visitors who were helped in finding the newest products throughout the grounds. Many big and leading companies exhibited at the show such as Power Décor, Kronoswiss, Berry Alloc, Sino Mapple, LM Flooring, Prado Style, Amorim, Dasso, Sika, Homag, Klumpp Wood Coatings, Yasuda, Dajulong, Gerfloor, Armstrong, LG Hausys, Forbo, Balta, Mannington, Dupont, Oriental Weavers, Suminoe, Shanhua Carpet Group, Tibet Sheep Carpet, Universal, Hongjia, and pavilions organisers such as Flanders Investment and Trade/ Belgium, Carpet Export Promotion Council/ India, American Flooring Alliance/ USA, ITKIB/Turkey and the

Federal Ministry of Economics/ Germany. Four halls (10,000 m2 each) were filled with the whole range of carpet products and technologies, two halls for the ever expanding resilient flooring sector, and four halls dedicated to the wood flooring products and floor technologies. The upgraded product segments allocation and the use of one more main entrance than the previous years, made some adjustments to the visitors flow and guaranteed a smoother visitors’ access especially on the opening day, always very busy at DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR. Xtra members combine for conference The first combined Flooring Xtra gathering with both New Zealand and Australian member stores and suppliers took place on 15 to 17 May at the Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa in Queensland, Australia. Starting the conference off with a splash, members gathered on the first evening for a poolside party with a gourmet barbeque, live guest chefs, live music and mini boat races in the pool. With iPads up for grabs as prizes, it was a great night for all and an even better way to break the ice between members of the two countries. And yes, a few did end up in the pool by the end of the night! The next morning members gathered for the business sessions whilst suppliers were whisked away to be pampered at the spa or for a round of golf. The dress then changed from leis at the poolside to lassos and chequered shirts as everyone hopped on the buses and headed to the picturesque Yandina Station. On arrival the buses were held up by a Ned Kelly gang and everyone was rounded

After a few games of hobby horse races and heads and tails by the Ned Kelly gang, the meals were brought out and a six piece band started to do their magic. The final day of the conference was spent with Guest Speaker Tom O’Toole. The Beechworth Bakery businessman shared his passion and vision for customer service, leadership, and being a good business person. Later that evening, to celebrate a successful conference, the Sheraton lillypond was transformed into a dazzling space with throw cushions, candles, luminous furniture and a musical duo that set the scene for a cocktail and canape evening. Guests got into the glitz and glam of it, dressing up and ending the night with a spectacular finish.

The doors are now open to Carpet Court’s newest store, Gisborne Carpet Court, offering flooring solutions for homes and businesses throughout the Gisborne, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges areas of Victoria. The locally owned business has become a member of Australia’s largest flooring retailer, joining a network of more than 200 Carpet Court stores nationwide. Gisborne Carpet Court opened in May with a dedicated team of flooring specialists offering advice, service and expert installation. Gisborne Carpet Court owner, Peter Taylor, who owns two other Carpet Court stores, said that the decision to open a third was easy. “As Australia’s largest retail floorcovering group Carpet Court can offer a large range of flooring options at very competitive pricing,

something I’m proud to be able to provide to the local community,” said Peter. Carpet Court’s national marketing manager, Natasha Gallardo, has welcomed the new store into the group. “The new Gisborne store is dedicated to the local customers and believes they deserve to have an extensive range of flooring options on their doorstep. We look forward to watching the business flourish in the coming years.” In addition to the new Gisborne store, a number of current Carpet Court franchisees have expanded their footprint and bought existing shops including ABC Carpet Court in Ryde, NSW, which has now taken over ownership of St Leonards Carpet Court, NSW. D&M Carpet Court in Alderley, NSW has also taken over Urban Carpet Court, Queensland.

The newly built premises in Nottinghill, which took over 15 months to complete, has over 5000 m2 of warehouse space and approximately 1000 m2 of office space as well as a large training room.

Two stores connected to the Flooring Xtra group in the Manawatu, Feilding Flooring Xtra and Midway Flooring Xtra, had reason to celebrate at the FloorNZ Apprentice of the Year awards. Danielle White won the Flooring Planning and Design Trainee of the Year for 2012 and Matthew Anderson achieved the top Stage Three Apprentice of the Year award for 2012. Both awards represent not only the excellent results Danielle and Matthew achieved, but also highlight the commitment that both these Flooring Xtra stores have made towards ensuring their staff are involved in formal training within the flooring industry through FloorNZ. From back left, Karen Anderson (Midway Flooring Xtra), Adam Linn (Midway Flooring Xtra) and Andrew White (Feilding Flooring Xtra) Front: Tom Anderson (Midway Flooring Xtra), Matthew Anderson (Midway Flooring Xtra), Danielle White (Feilding Flooring Xtra) and Julie White (Feilding Flooring Xtra).

The FloorNZ Annual Apprentice Awards celebration was an exciting event with over 250 industry colleagues enjoying the evening in like-minded company. Held at the Riccarton Raceway in Christchurch, this year’s MC and guest speaker was Grant Robertson, Deputy Leader of the NZ Labour Party and spokesperson for Employment, Skills and Training. Mr Robertson took great pleasure in presenting the trophies to the award winners and then spoke about celebrating the success of young people in trades and the need for industry and government to really get behind initiatives like the Apprentice Awards, which highlight excellence.

As a part of its ongoing commitment to supporting apprentices in the New Zealand flooring industry, Techspan sponsored the Stage 3 Award and presented the winner with a Techspan plastic welding kit. Far right: A great night’s sleep in store – Craig Kennelly representing Sleepyhead presenting Roman Williams, Villars Trophy recipient, with a voucher for a new Sleepyhead bed. Roman will be able to enjoy his win by getting a great night’s sleep on a brand new bed courtesy of award sponsor Sleepyhead.A foreman for ConPrep Ltd in Christchurch, specialists in the grinding and preparation of concrete foundations, Roman’s commitment and dedication in gaining his qualification was acknowledged when he was awarded the Villars Trophy. Sleepyhead’s Product Manager, Mark Brady, was again delighted that Sleepyhead could be involved in sponsoring the Villars Trophy. Being a sponsor of the FloorNZ Apprentice awards closely aligns to Sleepyhead’s own philosophies – namely having a passion for what you do and being relentless in achieving your very best. Not only does Sleepyhead make beds but the company is also a major underlay manufacturer based in New Zealand.

He also endorsed the activities of FloorNZ as the ITO for the industry and said that FloorNZ was a very wellrespected ITO that was clearly delivering quality educational opportunities for the industry. Greg Durkin, Chief Executive of FloorNZ, gratefully acknowledged the generosity of the sponsors of the evening without whom events like this simply wouldn’t happen. He continued with his message to the audience that the flooring industry should continue celebrating excellence at every opportunity. “Quality education is an essential part of developing professionalism in any industry and flooring is no exception. Education has a key role to play in ensuring our personnel understand the balance between technical skills and consumers’ wants and dreams. Skilled staff take time to create and, given the skill shortage in Canterbury, now is the time for industry

to step up to the challenge of training,” Greg Durkin said. The top achieving apprentices in the New Zealand flooring industry for training completed in 2012 were: • Stage One Apprentice – Nicolass Webby, Complete Carpet Laying Ltd, Rangiora; • Stage Two Apprentice – Fraser Imrie, James Henry Flooring, Upper Hutt; • Stage Three Apprentice – Matthew Anderson, Midway Flooring Xtra, Palmerston North; • Villars Trophy – awarded to the person who has demonstrated the greatest enthusiasm and dedication to their training – Roman Williams, ConPrep Ltd, Christchurch; • Flooring Planning and Design Trainee of the Year – Danielle White, Feilding Flooring Xtra; • Supreme Award for overall top apprentice – Fraser Imrie.

Attended by a broad range of flooring industry professionals from around New Zealand, the evening was a great occasion for industry personnel to get together including suppliers, retailers, installers and apprentices. It was also an opportunity for both employers and employees to celebrate and be acknowledged for the commitment and effort that they both make to training the future leaders of the New Zealand flooring industry.

The success of the Apprentice Awards depends largely on the support of generous sponsors. FloorNZ wishes to thank and acknowledge our supporters – AutexCarpets, Dunlop Flooring, Forbo, Gilt Edge Industries, Handley Industries, Jacobsen, Kardean, Look Floors, Norman Ellison Carpets, Nuplex Construction Products, Polyflor, Sleepyhead, Techspan and UFloor Systems.

Australian apprentices shine The annual 2013 Victorian Furnishing Industry Training Awards (VFITA) were recently held at the Plaza Ballroom, Melbourne in celebration of the achievements of the next generation of craftsmanship. The best of Victoria’s flooring and furnishing trainees were nominated by employers, teachers and registered training providers. Respected sports journalist and exAFL player Michael Roberts brought the night to life as MC by engaging industry panellists Christian Cole, Jeff Maas and Ewan McEoin who inspired guests with great insights into the past, present and future of the industries. The awards not only recognise the outstanding efforts made within the industry but are also an excellent platform to acknowledge the industry as a whole and highlight the career and business opportunities available in these varied and vibrant industries. “Acknowledging our up and coming craftspeople is essential for supporting and encouraging them to continue to build their passion for the industry,” said Australian Furniture Association CEO, Patrizia Torelli. “The team of employers, registered training organisations and teachers, who work diligently behind the scenes to support the trainees, provide the much needed guidance, direction and motivation to keep the industries alive and thriving.” The VFITA dinner was held on 19 April at the Plaza Ballroom, Melbourne.

Retailer of the month

Successful formula Floors Direct, Salisbury Plain, South Australia

F

loors Direct owner, Jim Johnstone has been in the floorcovering industry in Adelaide for over 38 years, the first 15 years as a respected carpet layer and the last 23 years as a well known retailer. “Having to retire from carpet laying due to a serious back injury, it was a natural progression for me to open my own business in my local area,” said Jim. “I already had a client base built up over my years as an installer and I was also well known within the local sporting circles.”

Trading as Northern Carpet Discounters, Jim’s philosophy was simple – as an independent retailer, to carry stock at the best possible prices and pass that, along with good old fashioned service, onto his customers. Along with quality installers, that should lead to a successful business. The formula proved well founded: while some people find it hard to make the transition from installing to sales, Jim found it quite easy as customers would welcome his opinion as a former installer.

Having spent the first six years as an independent retailer, including long hours making his retail outlet one of the strongest in the area, he was approached by Carpet Choice in Adelaide and joined as one of its inaugural members. “In late 2005, an approach was made from another retailer to purchase the business and an agreement was reached with the business sold in January 2006” said Jim. While Jim’s intention was to take a well earned 12 month break, after a few

months’ rest it was evident that carpet was still in his blood and so, with former long term employee Kevin Hicks urging him to open up again, the decision was made to open a small outlet trading as Floors Direct. “Going back to the old philosophy has proved to be a good decision as the business has now grown to be larger than anything in the past, and this has led to the purchase of new premises in the north of Adelaide to cope with demand.” he explained.

The past couple of years has seen the staff grow with the inclusion of Jim’s son Calum Johnstone, who has quickly built up an enviable client base, as well as Jim’s wife, Celia, who looks after the bookwork, and long term loyal employee Kevin Hicks, who has worked for Jim for 15 years. Together, the sales team achieves results envied by many. “It has always been our philosophy that, to be successful you need to be diverse in all areas of floorcoverings and hence Floors Direct is involved in all facets of flooring.

This includes domestic, commercial, hospitality, etc,” said Jim. “Our clientele includes around 60% repeat customers and we deal with a large range of builders, developers, property managers, real estate companies and insurance work. “No job is too big or small for the team at Floors Direct and we pride ourselves on servicing all areas – not only in South Australia, but all of Australia. The proof of this is in the list of completed projects in Queensland, Perth, Melbourne, Alice Springs and ongoing work in Darwin.

Carpets&Rugs

Horizons by Jamie Durie

After an amazing response to the first collection, Jamie Durie Signature has yet again put its creative and colourful ideas into another inspiring range of floor rugs in collaboration with The Rug Collection.

“Blurred horizons of the beautiful natural landscape of Australia are the inspiration behind my latest collection of rugs,” said Jamie. “When you photograph a portrait of someone, it's nice to have the background out-of-focus so your attention zooms into the subject. These exquisitely colour shaded rugs act as a beautiful backdrop to any room in the same way depth of field influences our perception. There is no critical point of transition between one shade of colour to the next and as a result the rugs provide a soft, comforting anchor to a room, evoking a sense of serenity similar to when viewing a landscape horizon at dawn or dusk.” The new range from Jamie Durie Signature by The Rug Collection will be launched on 3 July in Melbourne. It is crafted from 100% hand tufted New Zealand wool and is available in three popular sizes.

Heritage Living with Colour Gard Beautiful classic carpets add a luxurious ambience to any home. Whether the house decor is modern or period style, a Classic Signature carpet design will create a sophisticated environment that can be enjoyed for many years. With timeless appeal and exceptional performance, Signatures Heritage Living Range of carpets comes in five beautiful designs in up to

nine colours, with Colour Gard for fade protection and Ultra Gard for stain protection. “Colour Gard is permanently bonded to the carpet fibre so no amount of sun or cleaning will diminish its impressive performance,” said Signature Carpet’s National Marketing Manager, Martina Kramer. “It protects the fibre and repels UV rays like an armoured colour shield.”

Changing times at Sallee New Zealand carpet manufacturer Sallee has announced it is upgrading its processes and products. “We've moved across to broadloom manufacturing, all custom coloured and custom made,” explained Sallee’s Selwyn Mackay. “This means we've got superior, more stylish and more luxurious product to offer. New sampling and new product development is also underway. “When we started in 1969 we weren't interested in taking shortcuts – and the same holds true today. What we're interested in is

Thicker, softer, quieter When it comes to multi-level living, the last thing people want is to hear noise from the floor above them. Whether it’s a townhouse, apartment, or two-storey home, the sound of footsteps, moving furniture, or falling items can be annoying to say the least. You can literally lose sleep over it. So, as more and more people choose to live on top of each other, the issue of sound insulation has never been more important. To solve this problem, the innovators at Dunlop Flooring have developed Dunlop AcoustiCushion, which provides outstanding sound insulation with the added benefits of making carpet more comfortable and helping maintain its appearance. Partnering carpet with AcoustiCushion is an excellent way to control unwanted noise in the home. In fact AcoustiCushion actually reduces noise impact through floors and ceilings by up to 68%, which easily surpasses the industry standard set by the Building Code of Australia. Dunlop AcoustiCushion (with carpet) records a level of 22db.

Getting a quick response QR codes are a fairly recent phenomenon but one which is rapidly catching on with businesses. QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional bar code) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan. (Source: Wikipedia) The code consists of black modules (square dots) arranged in a square grid on a white background. The information encoded may be made up of four standardised types (modes) of data (numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, Kanji) or, through supported extensions, virtually any type of data. A QR code is read by an imaging device such as a camera or camera phone, and formatted algorithmically by underlying software until the image can be appropriately interpreted.

Data is then extracted from patterns present in both horizontal and vertical components of the image. The applications for use can vary from product tracking, item identification, time tracking, document management and general marketing purposes.

Uses

Originally designed for industrial uses, QR codes

have now also become common in advertising. Smartphone users can install an app with a QR-code scanner that can read a displayed code and convert it to a URL, directing the smartphone's browser to the website of a company, store or product associated with that code providing specific information. The QR code has quickly become a focus

of advertising strategy, since it provides quick and effortless access to the brand's website. Beyond mere convenience to the consumer, it increases the chance that contact with the advertisement will convert to a sale by coaxing qualified prospects further down the conversion funnel without any delay or effort, bringing the viewer to the advertiser's site immediately, where a longer and more targeted sales pitch may continue. Although initially used to track parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR codes are now used over a much wider range of applications, including commercial tracking, entertainment and transport ticketing, product/ loyalty marketing and instore product labeling. Many of these applications target mobilephone users (via mobile tagging). Users may receive text, add a vCard contact to their device, open a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), or compose an e-mail or text message after scanning QR codes. They can generate and print their own QR codes for others to scan and use by visiting one of several pay or free QR code-generating sites or apps. Google has a popular API to generate QR codes and apps for scanning QR codes can be found on most smartphone devices. QR codes storing addresses and URLs may appear in magazines, on signs, on buses, on business cards, or on almost any object about which users might need information. Users with a camera phone equipped with the correct reader application can scan 30

How you can maximise your effectiveness with QR codes: • provide explanations about their use and benefits; • encourage actions that support your marketing plan; • assuage the fears of the technically challenged; • give reasons to come back; • experiment with the size, location, and color of your QR codes; • study your analytics; • make the process fun, such as a QR code scavenger hunt; • experiment. The potential for QR Codes is limitless. What’s most exciting is how they

take what social media is doing well now, bringing people together with technology, and extending it to enhance the experience. The next generation of barcodes will hold even more information – so much that an Internet connection will not even be necessary. The content will be effectively embedded in the code. Imagine scanning a digital code to manifest physical reality? It’s amazing to consider where this can go. How about you? How can you use QR codes to take advantage of this phenomenon? Carpet Care Services in Lane Cove, NSW found it had drying equipment going missing – dehumidifiers, air movers, tools, etc. To counteract this, the company devised an (almost) free system using QR codes, iPhones and Google Doc spread sheets. “Basically, every item has a QR code assigned that directs to a spread sheet housed on Google Docs,” explained Ross Riek of Carpet Care Services. “Each item is scanned when leaving the warehouse and the spread sheet is filled out. When the item returns it is then rescanned and logged in again using the spread sheet. “We decided to be innovative utilising cheap options so that more profit stayed in the business account rather than having expensive software that basically does the same thing. “It is a great way totrack equipment when out on the field without the need for over cost software.”

Fit-for-purpose flooring solutions Healthcare facilities can pose significant challenges for facilities managers across Australia, when specifying a floorcovering material that strikes the correct balance between hygiene performance and design. Hygiene and cleanliness are critical to the safe operation of a healthcare building. If floors are not correctly specified or properly cleaned, the spread of disease and onset risk of contamination amongst patients can have devastating consequences. As a result, seamless resin materials are increasingly being used in these settings to provide an eye-catching and clean surface, which is strong enough to bear superimposed loads. Not only hardwearing and durable, resin materials are easily cleaned and maintained. The material delivers a nonporous, watertight, impervious

finish that does not support microbial growth or allow moisture to accumulate in joints and crevices. Resin material can be laid to coves to provide a hygienic transition between the floor and wall – helping to prevent the spread of bacteria and infection. Resin can also be graded to meet varying slip-resistance requirements – ensuring a safe environment for staff and patients alike by reducing the risk of slips and aggravated trips. Flowcrete Australia is part of Flowcrete Group Ltd, a leading manufacturer of resin based floor and wall coatings, including seamless epoxy terrazzo, fast-cure MMA and hardwearing polyurethane finishes, as well as cementitious sub-floor screeds. A flooring installation in Sydney demonstrated

Flowcrete’s ability to deliver style and substance underfoot at the city’s landmark Concord Repatriation General Hospital. More than 200 m2 of Flowcrete Australia's seamless and sparkling resin flooring system, Kristalina, were installed at the facility's newly constructed Medical Education building. After failing to achieve a satisfactory polished concrete floor finish across the centre's corridors and within student break-out areas, the client was open to finding a slipresistant, decorative and hygienic flooring system that would achieve a uniform finish and represent the standards and quality of the hospital itself. Kristalina is a highly decorative surface material containing a creative blend of pigmented and glitter flakes, which are scattered and

sealed over a coloured epoxy resin base coat. The system delivers a hard-wearing, high-gloss finish and offers excellent UV resistance. For the Concord Medical Education Centre, the Kristalina system was formulated in a special blend of coloured aggregates to deliver an attractive multitoned grey finish. Following on from the installation of the Kristalina system, the entire surface was coated with a water-based polyurethane sealer in a satin finish. As well as delivering a highly attractive aesthetic finish, the eco-friendly resin floor finish also hit the right notes in terms of the client's environmental requirements. Not only is the Kristalina material solvent-free and low in VOC emissions, but also delivers a wealth of lifecycle cost and efficiency savings.

Ultimate anti slip solution for cold room When the DHL Matraville complex was undergoing major development work, a requirement for highly slip resistive anti slip flooring was identified by the architect, who then contacted Global Safe to provide a solution. Global Safe’s floor safety representative attended the site and suggested the Floor Tuff Ultimate environmentally friendly polyurethane anti slip coating system be used due to its independently accelerated, wear tested, sustainable, very high slip resistive quality. The recommendation was also based on the very high expected forklift traffic movements as well as the special cold room environment.

32 Flooring June/July 2013

The product recommendation was accepted and the Global Safe team carried out the work on a very tight deadline. The project was completed within the specified

constraints and the surface then independently tested by a NATA accredited slip resistance company, Safe Environments. The mean average test result, using the Wet Pendulum

testing, was BPN 70, which provides a very high Pendulum Class V classification and full compliance. Feedback from the architect and DHL management was excellent. They indicated their total satisfaction with the quality of the workmanship and the professionalism and dedication of the application team during the entire project. Global Safe offers a unique, sustainable and environmentally friendly remedial and disability solution range for virtually any surfaces and situations. The solutions provided by the company are also being used at thousands of situations throughout various parts of the world via the Global Safety Surfaces Network members.

Influencing performance (Part 1) By Chris Ogden It is probably safe to say that most of us feel that our business could be performing better. It is often difficult, however, to know what we should be doing to achieve improvement and, in fact, we often end up focussing on those things that are outside our control. Like the proverbial possum in the headlights, we become mesmerised by things that we cannot control. It might be a big external influence such as the economy or more localised issues such as competitors who do work at crazy margins, fickle customers, down turn in local industry, the time of year or a multitude of other factors that can negatively impact our business. If you follow a sports team consider, for a moment, what you think when it fails to perform: very rarely would we conclude that a loss was due to the stadium they played at or the skills of the other team; instead we look internally and conclude they should be kicking more (or less), that they can’t pass (or can’t catch); we will have an opinion on the quality of the coaching and if asked we can name the players that should be dropped from the team. When we look at our business we tend to look at external factors yet when we look at our sports team we look internally. Why is that? We reach conclusions on our sports team based on our close observation of the game; on the analysis that is provided to us both as we watch the game and then on post-game analysis.

We have commentators and technology that allows us to analyse even the most mundane aspect of the game. Most in this industry don’t have similar tools within their business to provide analysis in real time and when we do get information about our business it is usually high level information often arriving too late to be useful in our day to day operations. The information we get is often inadequate if we want to use it to identify what we might do within our business to improve it so instead we continuously look at external factors over which we have no control. What this might mean is that we are no more in control of our business than the possum is in control of the truck hurtling towards it. Accurate and timely information about our business is our biggest opportunity to influence how our business performs regardless of external factors. The best way to have access to this information is to have an integrated business management system that is designed specifically for our industry. Improving the estimating process I sometimes get calls from retailers who ask me to use Measure to check quantities on jobs that they missed out on. In most cases I can show them that they were quoting too much product: in today’s tough market even a metre or two on a house lot of carpet is enough to put you out of contention. Aside from quantities the most frequent comment I get is about how quickly I can come back with quantities. I recently spent 20 minutes on a job that the salesperson had spent an hour and a half quantifying. The benefits of using software such as Measure to help you in this key aspect of your business are considerable: • save 40-60% of the time you currently spend on the estimating process; • get consistent estimating from everyone

36 Flooring June/July 2013

in your business; • be 100% confident of your quantities; • no longer include “fudge factors” that make you uncompetitive; • improved documentation for customers, the work room and installers; • gain a valuable sales tool as you differentiate yourself from your competitors; • new employees become more productive more quickly. There is good reason to trial Measure in your business. How well we do will always begin with how successful we are in the processes of estimating and quoting; both of which rely on accurate information and prompt responses to our potential customers. Measure gives you both. The fact is that you only have a limited window of opportunity to make a

sale; the longer the plan sits on a desk unquantified and the longer it takes to get a quote into the customer’s hands the less likely it is that you will make the sale. Using Measure you can get more quotes out more quickly and more accurately. Because you can be confident of the quantities you can be more competitive and more profitable and the time saved means that your salespeople have time to follow up on leads and to close sales. You can trial Measure free for 30 days at measureflooring.com to see how adopting just this one piece of technology might help you grow your business. Parquetry adds personal touch to timber floors makeover and now features improved functionality making it easier to find and source the right products for your projects. There is also a new full product catalogue, which showcases the complete range of industry proven solutions. “Enhancing Public Space” is Classic’s motto and the company continues to do so – now with an enhanced new look.

From herringbone and basketweave to more contemporary geometric designs, block parquetry adds a distinctive touch to home flooring. Great for heavy traffic areas such as hallways and entrances, the customisable nature of parquet flooring offers the ability to create a style statement. "While block parquetry provides a practical and durable flooring solution, homeowners are also realising its design appeal," said Clinton Skeoch from Boral Timber. "A popular choice is to use a mix of timber species, combining lighter and darker woods to add interest and dimension."

Skeoch added, "Block parquetry is a popular flooring choice due to its hardwearing properties. Spot damage can be easily fixed by replacing just the affected timber blocks. Furthermore, after years of wear and tear, the entire floor can be restored by sanding and resealing." Boral parquetry is available in a wide selection of Australian hardwood timber species including blackbutt, Sydney blue gum, brushbox, ironbark, spotted gum and red mahogany. Boral has achieved Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) chain of custody certification (AS 4707-2006) for its timber products.

Rubber flooring popularity grows This year iRubber Pty Ltd has received increasing demand from the domestic sector for quality rubber flooring synonymous with the ranges of Dalsouple and Roppe that they represent, according to Murray Gardner, CEO of iRubber Pty Ltd. Dalsouple is a quality French manufactured product and has taken pride of place in many kitchens and bathrooms in Europe and now Australia and New Zealand. The virtually limitless colour

range with no minimum quantities effectively secures its footprint on domestic customers. Unlike Dalsouple, Roppe rubber is made in the United States and is, perhaps, quite unique in that it is one of the very few companies that produce ‘white’ rubber for interior designs. Available in either smooth or studded profiles, Roppe’s white rubber is increasing in demand in kitchens, bathrooms and now bedrooms.

Ecological and durable alternative Embelton Bamboo Decking is a solid high density bamboo board made from compressed bamboo strips. A special patented heat treatment process places Embelton Bamboo Decking in Class 1 for durability, in accordance with EN350, making it exceptionally suitable for outdoor decking. The special symmetrical shape of the sides offers the choice between either

the ribbed or the flat surface, and allows for quick installation with Cobra fasteners. Gerflor, has launched a complete range of wall protection, handrails and accessories onto the Australian market. Known as Gerflor SPM, this extensive collection of wall, corner, door and hand rail systems has been tested in real operating conditions with weights that correspond to trolleys and impact speeds consistent with people on the move at 320kg at three kmh. These heavy duty characteristics are important in demanding health and education settings but, according to Global Manager of the Gerflor SPM portfolio, Eric Delville, it’s the bacteriostatic and fungistatic characteristics of the ranges that make the most compelling story. “For most architects, wall protection is a necessary evil. It offends their design sensibilities to consider using panels and handrails on nice clean white or grey walls. For a long time in a lot of countries wall protection was never specified in the first stage of the project. It was only after construction and the building was in use that they saw the damage and the breeding ground that it sets up for bacteria, that protection was installed,” he said. Mr Delville has been in Australia to help the local subsidiary launch the expansive range of SPM products.

“Our SPM products are 100% antibacterial. The entire Gerflor range is specially designed to prevent a build up of dust and germs. The non-porous surface and rounded design of every product is the result of indepth engineering studies,” Mr Delville said. “To fight against bacteria, we promote also a complete waterproof solution on the basis of wall protection panels hot welded with Gerflor flooring," Mr Delville said. An extensive palette of colours and designs and a host of options to customise these to complement a particular design aesthetic will help to stimulate interest amongst local architects and designers. But it could be the capacity to digitally print anything on panels to enliven operating theatres, corridors and wards that really sparks their interest beyond the inherent health and safety benefits. “Gerflor SPM has thousands of designs that its customers can choose from to print on wall panels. But, generally architects won’t choose from these designs – they want their own colours and designs to put their individual stamp on the project and that is a perfectly achievable additional feature of what is primarily and infection control story,” Mr Delville said.

Gerflor Clic tougher than steel Independent testing has found Gerflor's vinyl retail flooring is harder-wearing than floors covered in steel.
Gerflor’s Creation Clic, designed for supermarkets, convenience stores and high street retailers, was analysed at Ceram, the independent materials testing and development specialists in Staffordshire, England.

In a laboratory evaluation designed for testing the raised access steel surface flooring used in shops and offices, a load equivalent to 141 stones (895.3 kg) was wheeled 20,000 times across the vinyl nonstop for four days.
Managing Director of Gerflor Australasia, Chris Low said his UK colleagues were delighted with the results. “Apparently the wheels running on the same route 20,000 times obliterated a line where the steel was destroying the steel layers completely.
But Creation Clic was extremely resilient. There was no

structural damage and it will never suffer wear like this from people walking around a shop,”
Mr Low said. Boasting a wear group T rating, and an overall thickness of 6mm, Gerflor’s Creation Clic System is a series of interlocking planks with bevelled edges. The vertical interlocking mechanism and ease of cutting and handling means flooring can be laid swiftly into corners and against edges. Unlike laminates, individual planks of Creation Clic can be removed and replaced without the need to start at the perimeter. “The Creation Clic system can be laid quickly without the premises closing its doors for refurbishment. That is a huge cost saver as there’s no loss of turnover and minimal disruption,” Mr Low said. As well as being incredibly robust, the polyurethane treatment PUR+ provides excellent resistance to scratching and chemicals and it can be cleaned quickly and hygienically.

The Delmhorst TotalCheck 3-in-1 Moisture Meter offers moisture detection, measurement and testing for a range of subfloors. It excels in its functions, reliability and affordability. Relative humidity is a crucial factor to consider when installing a floor over a concrete subfloor, particularly with the new Australian Standards in flooring installation. The in-situ probe measuring relative humidity is removable and conforms to the AS1884-2012 standard to determine if concrete floors have dried adequately before installing a floorcovering. The Delmhorst TotalCheck includes ambient temperature, dew point and humidity readings, as well as a pin mode for measuring moisture in wood, gypsum and thin set mortar. In addition, it stores up to 1400 readings, which are date and time stamped, and can be grouped according to job sites or uploaded to a computer for easier retrieval. The Delmhorst range has been designed around affordability, with the only consumables being the sleeves. The probes can be recalibrated using the test check kit included and used multiple times. The Delmhorst TotalCheck 3-in-1 Moisture Meter is nationally distributed by MJS Floorcoverings and Manufacturers’ Agencies (MANAG).

HTC training in polished concrete A floor needs to be functional, sustainable and good looking and this is where polished concrete is able to deliver. Polished concrete is considered a good sustainable design flooring choice as it makes use of the already present concrete material. Polishing the exposed concrete eliminates the energy and material used in applying a floorcovering such as carpet or vinyl, making it an environmentally friendly option, which can help reduce a building’s carbon footprint. Being able to create a polished concrete floor is not easy. It is a long process, which takes years of training and knowledge to master. Now HTC is offering its own innovative training academies. First held at the HTC headquarters in Sweden, the training academy was designed to teach grinding machine operators the fundamental process in creating the perfect HTC Superfloor polished concrete surface. For the last 10 years, Tyrolit Australia has been conducting academy programs teaching new and existing participants the grinding techniques behind their HTC machines, how to correctly service and maintain

their machines and offering the opportunity to become an accredited HTC operator. The academy is run over two days and includes theory and practice. A large part of the course is devoted to the HTC Superfloor method of polishing and maintaining concrete. All participants are given the opportunity to try out the latest floor grinding equipment available, which simplifies and streamlines the grinding process. The HTC academies are run yearly in most Australian states.

No interruptions during refurbishment The boutique QT hotel on Queensland’s Gold Coast has undergone a major refurbishment, including the laying of more than 3000 m2 of timber flooring, transforming it into a fresh and modern travel destination. Billed as ‘nostalgic surfer chic meets Miami

catwalk cool’, the hotel received new timber floors throughout the reception, lift areas and entrance ways. The work had to be carried out while the hotel was in operation, with around 300 m2 completed every 24 hours including the lift areas on every floor.

The fast pace required for the project was met with the help of an efficient sealing and bonding solution from Sika, requiring minimal surface preparation. Adhering to the existing concrete, tile and ply subfloors, American oak floor boards were fixed utilising SikaBond - T55(J).

Facilitating the speedy application, the easy flowing one-part polyurethane adhesive is designed for direct elastic bonding of timber floors. The adhesive is of low viscosity and cures on exposure to atmospheric moisture. Sika Market Field Manager, Sealing and Bonding, Denis Gray worked closely with the contractor, Timber Flooring Unlimited throughout the process. “Timber Flooring Unlimited tested different surface preparation methods and found a light grind was all that was needed to provide strong adhesion,” said Gray. “Sika Primer MB was used to provide protection from sub-floor moisture. The products proved invaluable in helping us to meet the brief, ensuring work caused minimal disruption to hotel guests while still delivering a high quality finish.”

Kitchen floor nourished by Livos The Agrarian Kitchen is a sustainable farm-based cooking school situated in a 19th century schoolhouse at Lachlan, 45 minutes from Hobart in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley, Australia. It was established by Rodney Dunn and his wife Séverine, who moved from Sydney to Tasmania in July 2007 to transform the schoolhouse into Tasmania’s first hands-on, farm-based cooking school. Cooking classes commenced in January 2009. With the large number of students through the doors since its opening, the floor needed rejuvenation. It looked slightly dry and had some oil stains as one would expect in a commercial kitchen. However, it was still in a relatively good condition. Due to the extreme wear and tear of this floor, and to remove the oil stains, Livos

46 Flooring June/July 2013

Australia decided on using a 120 grit screen back over the surface rather than a maroon pad (light abrasive) as would normally be used. Since the floor was to be re-oiled, the oil stains did not need complete removal. After a gentle buff with the screen back, the floor was saturated with oil again, left on for 20 minutes, then wiped off. Livos oils have been very successfully used on the Agrarian Kitchen in Tasmania, providing a real life, practical confirmation of how hard wearing and easy to maintain natural, healthy oils are under the harsher conditions of public or commercial buildings. The oil used was from the Livos Kunos range, which is ideal for hardwood timbers such as the Agrarian Kitchen’s Tasmanian oak floor. With a high rate of waxes and resin it

gives a glowing sheen with a natural warmth and feel when finished. The Kunos oils are certified food safe so can be used with confidence on kitchen bench tops and chopping boards etc that come in direct contact with food. LONG-TIP™ SUREEDGE®

BBS

28mm 3-PIN

HIGHEST QUALITY SureEdge® 3-Pin is made of 28mm Radiata Pine 5-ply, bonded with low formaldehyde resins. It contains 105 high tensile strength Japanese LONGTIP™ pins laid out in a stagger pattern to maximise their total holding power (each pin holds a full stretch). 10 high quality Japanese ‘black’ nails are provided for superior anchoring power in most conditions. EASY TO INSTALL SureEdge® 3-Pin is made with 100% easy-to-cut Radiata Pine that has been kiln dried to prevent pin rust and bowing. A third row of pins makes it easier to hook onto stiff carpet backings and our anchoring nails are setback to reduce the chance of ‘wall-strike’. ECONOMICAL SureEdge® 3-Pin never requires extra nails to anchor it down, or call-backs to fix stretch problems. This superior quality makes it quicker to install and saves time and money doing the job right the first time.

AUSTRALIAN MADE Locally made, price competitive carpet gripper to meet every local standard. TOUGH 28mm wide with 3 full rows of pins, SureEdge® 3-Pin is designed for difficult installations and carpet types in heavy traffic areas. These pins will penetrate dense carpet backings and grip and hold coarse backings.

The constant development of new products for the coatings industry presents fresh challenges to contractors. New materials, new designer finishes and faster curing times require new methods and techniques to successfully install the product. Work practices of the contractor must also change if he is to meet the demands of the market and the constant challenge of profitability. While all materials differ one from the other, they usually all require one common process: thorough on-site mixing. Correct mixing is essential for the success of a product and while there are many reasons why this is often neglected, the implications of failure are well known. “The PortaMix Hippo has been recognised since 1990 as a cost effective mixer for the flooring industry,” said Miles Suckling, NZ Director for the Intex Group New Zealand. “The Hippo was purpose-designed and built to meet the needs of a very demanding role. Recent laboratory trials in America with the Hippo produced superior material consistency and flow rates with less water giving improved material hardness and performance. “Internationally recognised, it was awarded the American RER Innovative Product Award in 2010. By allowing professional contractors to increase productivity by up to 40% and reduce labour costs by 33%, it has proved to be the most efficient mixer in its class world-wide. “And now the best just got better and bigger,” he explained. “The Mega Hippo 80 series will mix up to 160 kilograms of material in a single batch in seven minutes. This provides the contractor with unparalleled capacity and performance. The Mega Hippo also features a specially designed liner to assist with cleaning or to eliminate batch cross-contamination. A dust extraction port is also provided in the canister and liner to allow connection to vacuum equipment to assist with dust and health hazards.” Floor leveling compounds, epoxies and resins, adhesives, paint, plaster and grout are some of the products that can be mixed with the Mega Hippo. Many different kinds of work have been successfully achieved with the Hippo including an Air Force base requiring runway crater repairs to operational level within one hour using

a high strength and rapidly curing compound and a bottling plant requiring a rapid setting resin floor coating applied to an area of 25000m2. This work was completed with two Hippo mixers at a rate of 1000 m2 applied under 60 minutes.

Moisture suppression

High moisture conditions within a concrete slab and tight project schedules pose challenges to building owners, general contractors, and flooring installers, as I am sure you are all well aware. Until now, contractors and installers were faced with two equally unattractive

alternatives: wait and risk project delays while the floor dries, or install multicomponent moisture mitigation systems. Now, VersaShield’s patented coated fibreglass reinforced membrane provides superior moisture suppression at a modest cost. Complying with the ASTM standards, VersaShield from MJS suppresses moisture migration from the top surface of the concrete for internal relative humidity levels as high as 95%. Its low moisture transmission rate of 0.04 perms means it essentially blocks moisture to the flooring system. The unique mineral top coat allows the installer to adhere the chosen floorcovering to the VersaShield surface. VersaShield is ideal for use with most floorcoverings, including carpet tile, broadloom carpet, engineered wood, laminate and vinyl tile. Installing VersaShield is incredibly quick – roll it, cut to fit and tape it. Manufactured in the USA, VersaShield has delivered thousands of metres of performance to professionals throughout the building industry.
