News Award winning TAFE students help design the future

Minosa wins international award THE winner of the 2014 International Design Award is an Australian kitchen and bathroom project by Darren Genner and Simona Castagna of Minosa, that ticked all the boxes for creativity and bold design. According to the judges, the spaces created by the team at Minosa are incredibly bold and challenge what we feel is normal adding that the integration of space made them worthy recipients of this prestige’s award. Now in its 12th year, the Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards is run by UK trade magazine Designer Kitchen & Bathroom. Entries were received this year from a wide range of countries including the US, Australia, the UAE, Ireland and Turkey, and the scope of some of these projects impressed the judges. Held at the exclusive Thames riverside pop-up events venue Supernova in London’s Embankment Gardens, this year’s event was hosted by British television and radio presenter Georgie Thompson and attended by 400 of the UK K&B industry’s senior figures.●

HETTICH Australia took part in Designing Your Future, the annual TAFE NSW, South Western Sydney's (SWSi’S) Lidcombe College design exhibition. This has been the second year Hettich Australia has been involved in the competition in conjunction with (SWSi’s) TAFE Lidcombe design. Hettich had the opportunity to judge 10 designs created by the students with the top three selected to be awarded with a cash prize for their achievements to support the costs for their course. First prize went to Regina Shakya for a well-designed storage solution, with great use of Hettich core hardware, which met the criteria for the competition. Event organiser and TAFE SWSi senior head teacher in Design, Kathy Marshall, said this year’s exhibition would be a wonderful source of inspiration to anybody looking at a career in design as well as those who were interested in sourcing a new designer for their own projects. Hettich Australia looks forward to being involved at next year’s exhibition, with training for the design students during the year at the Hettich Academy Smithfield office..●

Laminex supports local design community LAMINEX partnered with the inaugural 2014 MPavilion temporary architecture project at the Queen Victoria Gardens, Southbank Arts Precinct in Melbourne. MPavilion is a unique architecture commission and design event for Melbourne, initiated by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation with support from City of Melbourne and the Victorian State Government. Naomi Milgrom, AO, Chair of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation said she was delighted to have a leading design brand on board. “Laminex’s enthusiasm and support for the project has been wonderful. It has meant that we have been able to fulfil our vision to create Sean Godsell’s beautifully designed furniture for this year’s MPavilion,” said Naomi.

The 2014 MPavilion has been designed by award-winning Melbourne architect, Sean Godsell, and was inspired by the annual Serpentine Gallery in London’s Hyde Park. The pavilion design used recycled wooden flooring, galvanised steel and aluminum mesh to create a lightweight and lightfilled contemporary structure. Laminex Freestyle Curve Winter White was selected for use on kiosk joinery and benches within the garden pavilion structure, and was also used to create 50 limited edition MPavilion Chairs, designed by Sean Godsell. As part of the four month program, the MPavilion hosted a series of free seminars, workshops, performances and installations for architects, specifiers, designers and the general public to attend. ● www.suppliermagazine.com.au

International woodworking technology sector A comparison among major competitors in the January-June 2014 period. The recent Acimall survey for the January-June 2014 period shows a positive trend for all major global competitors, in order – Germany, Italy, China, Taiwan, Austria and the United States. Once again, Germany reaffirmed its role as world's leading exporter, with 788 million Euro, up by 0.44%, basically the same percentage that had been measured in the same period of the previous year. Looking at percentage results, the trend of Italian export is definitely better, up by 7% and close to a total value of 549 million Euro export in the six months under scrutiny. At number three in absolute value, with 376 million Euro, there is China, whose exports in the first semester of this year were estimated (it is really difficult to get consistent data) to have grown by 13.6%, more or less twice as strong as Italy. Exports from Taiwan decreased by 8.8% (at number four with 252 million Euro in value), while at number five we

find Austria (193.5 million Euro, plus 12.27%), and the United States at number six with a woodworking technology export value of 136.4 million Euro in the first six months of 2014, 10.77% less than in the same period of the previous year. Among the top-six competitors, it is worth noticing that only the United States and Taiwan recorded a negative trend. China showed the best trend, one percent point higher than Taiwan, two percent above Austria and almost the double of Italy.

Imports The analysis by Acimall’s Studies Office also provides valuable information on the import side of the business, with a ranking of the top-50 importers worldwide. The top position is taken by the United States which, in the first half 2014, imported woodworking machinery for a total value close to 434 million Euro (up 17.7% compared to January-June 2013). At number is two Russia (219.6 million Euro, plus 3.75%), although this result will be affected by the ruble

AHEC guidelines for new legislation TO support its members and Australian importers and users of American hardwoods with the Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Amendment Regulation (AUSILPAR), AHEC has developed a comprehensive, yet easily accessible, set of guidelines. The document has been created to explain to American exporters how best to assist Australian importers in complying with the ‘due diligence’ requirements of AUSILPAR, which asks for a thorough risk assessment of the legality of timber imports. Roderick Wiles, Director of AHEC Oceania said: “Through both the Seneca Creek Study and the FSC Risk Register draft risk assessment, we have confirmation that all US hardwood producing regions are low risk in terms of illegal harvest. “The US has a history of good forest governance – the strong rule of law and independent sector-wide risk assessment means we are confident that exporters will be able to supply Australian importers with the information they need to meet their AUSILPAR obligations with the utmost accuracy and efficiency.” Dominic McNeil, Director at Britton Timbers, one of the major importers of American hardwoods into Australia added: “The guidelines are of great assistance to companies like ourselves who import American hardwood into Australia.” ● www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Ligna preview Every two years in May, the largest woodworking technology show in the world is held in Hannover, Germany. And it's no idle boast, Ligna has more display space than the next five shows combined. It's safe to say that if you're looking for new equipment or to see the latest techniques, Ligna is the place to be. In January this year I went to Hannover on behalf of Supplier Magazine to see what you can expect from this year's show. By Technical Editor Philip Ashley Ligna is regarded by many as the Mecca for woodworkers and we need to understand why this is. First, Germany is the world's largest producer of woodworking machines (25%) followed by Italy (15%); mainland China (13%); USA (6%); Austria (5%) and Japan (4%) (source: VDMA estimates). Take out China producing a large percentage of hobby machines and we find that almost half of industrial woodworking machines sold come from Europe. We also need to understand that most of the new innovation comes 8 | SupplierJan/Feb 2015

from Europe. There is very little new technology coming out of Asia – it's largely copies or manufacture for a European parent company. It's interesting to note that Germany imported 90 million Euros of machinery from China in 2014 but this was mostly for the DIY market. German exports to China in the same period was 140 million Euros and most of this was highend technology. Similar trends are seen from Italy and Austria where highperforming machinery is being installed in China's booming furniture factories. The point of all these figures is that if you're looking for something new, original or innovative, Ligna is the place you will see it first. So what's on offer this year? Dr. Jochen Köckler of Deutsche Messe AG (the organisers) highlighted the 2015 innovations at a press conference attended by 145 of the world's wood trade journalists. The main themes for 2015 are automation for the furniture industry, surface technology, lightweight construction and energy from wood. He said that: "Survival in today's

competitive markets belongs to those who master the latest strategies, systems and solutions." Dr. Köckler also spoke about the fourth industrial revolution. If you're unclear about this (as I was) let me elaborate. The first industrial revolution we all know about occurred in 1784. It was based on production equipment driven by water and steam power. We just call it the Industrial Revolution. The second revolution (really an evolution) occurred in 1870 and was based on the division of labour and electrical power. The third revolution occurred in 1969 and was based on the use of IT to further automate production – and this, of course, led to CNC manufacturing.

Revolution 4.0 The fourth industrial revolution has reached the wood and furniture industries and will be highlighted at Ligna in May. Revolution 4.0 is all about machines and logistic systems "talking" to each other. telecommunications, information technology (IT), production equipment and logistics can now

merge to form a seamless manufacturing solution. It's not "pie-in-the-sky". Biesse is moving towards this ideal with its design and manufacturing software, assembly lines and smart CNC systems. Homag also offers completely networked production lines as do IMA (Wood Tech), SCM (Gabbett) and Felder. You will see all of this at Ligna where production lines up to 100 metres long are promised and will be fully operational. Of course this is all fine if you're a major producer but what if you're not? To a certain degree, the advantages of 4.0 can still be seen in single-machine operations where software becomes more intelligent and is able to forecast manufacture based on past production. We saw at AWISA the integration of cabinet hardware into CAD design programs with this information going to the machine. We also saw design, costing, simulation, manufacturing and logistical software coming together with telecommunications to create a more efficient and cost-effective factory. www.suppliermagazine.com.au

There are, of course, many other innovations so let's take a look at some now. Kleiberit's new HotCoating high-gloss panel finishing technology results in a microscratch-resistant surface that can be applied to melaminecoated panels. Diamonde (France) is promoting a range of ceramic cutting tools they call Diaceram that sits between TCT and diamond cutting technologies and we may see these tools offered by local suppliers in time. Leitz will present its range of intelligent micro-chipped tools in line with Revolution 4.0 and a DryCut saw-blade to cut anything from metal to composite board materials. Grotefeld has developed an aggregate specifically to drill holes on nesting machines to within 8mm of the bottom

edge of the panel. Leuco will be presenting its new extraction hood to aid in the efficient high-speed removal of abrasive chips such as in flooring production lines. IMA will present a brand new method of achieving the zero-joint edge we covered elsewhere in this issue. (They tell me it's different than all the other systems on the market but won't tell us yet just what that is.) Weinig is also taking on Revolution 4.0 with a networked solution it calls System Plus. CAD drawings are sent to a fully automatic tool grinder where a camera measures reference points for the moulder set-up. This results in reduced downtime, more accuracy and less errors. Weinig claims 14 new innovations for release at Ligna.

This year, Biesse will have significantly more floor space than before and Homag promises 100-metre long production lines and its famous Homag City with the hugely popular innovation centre. SCM, Felder and Weinig also put on significant displays at this show. Supplier magazine was the only Australian or New Zealand trade magazine at the show preview and we'll be at the show in May too. Next issue we'll bring you more on what you will see at Ligna 2015. I went to Ligna in 2013 and it cost me just a little more than $3,000 for the week. Fly into Frankfurt, get a German rail pass for the week and stay in one of the many towns (on a rail line) out of Hannover. You'll find you'll see the real

Germany as well as having an affordable trip. Don't get me wrong, our local AWISA show is a fantastic event and a must-see but Ligna has eight times the exhibitors on almost seven times the floor space. A progressive company cannot afford to miss the technology on display, often for the very first time. I am not promoting Ligna – it's just where the new technology is. It's interesting that all the major Australian suppliers run technology tours to coincide with the Ligna fair. It is expected that 90,000 visitors will attend Ligna this year and while this may be a slight drop from the last fair, it reflects industry trends. Three percent of those visitors will come from Australia – will you be one of them? ●

World furniture 2015

Abstract of the World Furniture Outlook 2015 report by CSIL (www.csilmilano.com) World furniture consumption reached US$ 436 billion in 2013, with an increase of about US$ 17 billion over 2012. The calculation is based on CSIL processing of data from official sources, both national and international, that cover the 70 most important countries. For the year 2015 growth of furniture demand worldwide is forecasted at +3.4% in real terms. A summary of forecasts of furniture consumption in the 70 countries (grouped by geographical region) is as follows:

The leading furniture importers are the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Canada. The major furniture exporters are China, Italy, Germany, Poland and Vietnam.

In the 2004-2007 period there was a very large increase in the imports of the United States (from US$ 21 billion to US$ 26 billion in current dollars) and smaller increases in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Canada. The recession in the USA caused a major decrease in furniture imports (from US$ 26 billion in 2007 to about US$ 24 billion in 2008 and 19 billion in 2009). Growth of imports resumed in subsequent years.

12 | SupplierJan/Feb 2015

All major furniture importing countries have seen decreases in imports during the recession. By 2014 the USA, Canada and Germany have reached or exceeded the pre-recession level, while recovery is slow in other European countries (particularly in the UK).

The imports penetration for furniture (measured as the ratio between imports and consumption) for the entire world rose from 29.1% in 2004 to 30.6% in 2007. In 2008 and 2009 it decreased as a consequence of the recession, and remained below the pre-recession maximum thereafter. The World Furniture Outlook report assumes that the international scenario will be as follows:

In the last ten years world trade of furniture (defined as the average between total furniture exports from the 70 major countries and total furniture imports into the 70 major countries) has grown faster than furniture production and has consistently amounted to about 1% of world trade of manufactures. World trade of furniture amounted to US$ 94 billion in 2009 (19% below the previous year) and grew to US$ 106 billion in 2010, US$ 117 billion (i.e. the pre-recession level) in 2011, US$ 122 billion in 2012 and 128 billion in 2013. If the world scenario shown in Table 1 materializes, world trade of furniture would be likely to grow in current US$ to US$ 134 billion in 2014, to US$ 141 billion in 2015 and to US$ 149 billion in 2016.

Interior Innovation Awards 2015 In 2002, the imm cologne and the German Design Council set themselves the goal of initiating an independent award geared towards the sector. The result: the Interior Innovation Award, which is today considered one of the most renowned design awards in the furnishing sector worldwide. The Interior Innovation Award stands for first-class innovative achievements in all the sector’s product areas and awards Winner, Selection and Best of Best. It also offers companies an effective tool for corporate positioning and product differentiation on the interior design market. The awards were presented during the imm cologne and LivingKitchen trade fair in January 2015 by the German Design Council. Among the winners were:

Interior+ is all about smart storage and the appeal of unit interiors. A modular concept based on a patented aluminium framework that is custom-built to fit the unit. The warp-resistant swivel frame is assembled lengthwise on a rail or crossways with a pivot hinge. The form-fitting base mat, the interplay of materials – melamine in anthracite with carbon and a brush-finished stainless steel look – and the wellthought-out design of the containers provides an attractive whole. New at IMM: a smaller Interior+ for storing spices in wall units.

Going rural The country kitchen trend is more popular than ever. While it may seem like a paradox at first, it’s actually completely understandable: as the world’s cities grow and the population of rural regions continues to decline, country-style interiors are becoming a permanent trend. In pre-industrial times it was the countryside that fed people. While most people now live and work in cities, it is only natural that the rural idyll remains an object of longing in people’s imaginations. For all the advantages urban living has to offer – cities cannot provide a slower pace of life, peace and quiet or the feeling of being at one with nature. The individual elements of the country style vary from one nation to another. But whether it’s the look of an English cottage you’re after or a Provence-style interior – there is a certain degree of common ground amd it all starts with the materials. Naturalness is key. Wood, wickerwork, stone, ceramic and

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

clay are just as popular as cotton, linen or leather. Decorative elements such as romantic floral patterns, fresh blossoms and twigs conjure up a sense of rural charm. Seasonal touches from the garden are just as effective: colourful flowers in summer, pumpkins in autumn. Bold colour combinations are out of place in a setting like this; instead, pastel shades and natural hues dominate. This yearning for the countryside extends to the kitchen too. It thus comes as no surprise that many exhibitors at LivingKitchen 2015 were paying more and more attention to this trend. Blanco’s Idessa XL 6 S ceramic sink, for instance, blends in very subtly with a modern country-style kitchen. The sink combines a serene, clear-cut look with a natural feel and contemporary convenience. The large basins provide plenty of space for cleaning even the bulkiest baking and cooking utensils. It’s a perfect blend of nostalgia and functionality. As is this sink from Villeroy

& Boch. The classic ceramic character piece was recently given a general overhaul and, in its new-found form, demonstrates that it can cut a fine figure outside country-style kitchens as well. Harmony is the aesthetic hallmark of the country look and one of the main reasons for the style’s popularity. Schüller’s Nordic-style country kitchen features natural materials that are pleasant to the touch and exude a sense of authenticity. The customer can choose between six different pastel shades. Ballerina Küchen’s new country line features another natural classic in the form of fronts with a Bavarian oak veneer. It has a natural colour and serene grain with small, unobtrusive knots. Whilst this model was also developed for the modern, Scandinavian-style country kitchen, the Ballerina model with classic coffered fronts is a perfect fit with an English kitchen. One’s personal choice of location is the only question left to be answered: town or country? At the end of the day, somebody who decides to install a country-style kitchen in an urban apartment can kill two birds with one stone: harmony at home – and all the advantages of urban living.●

Laminex 2015 Trends Forecast The 2015 Trends Forecast from Laminex Australia embraces global design trends and adds a hint of local flavour to inspire Australian homeowners and renovators. According to Laminex Australia Group Design Director, Neil Sookee, three key themes – Essence, Impulse and Real – will influence interiors in 2015 and beyond. The three themes strip back to the bare essentials, encourage mixing colours, patterns and forms and embrace imperfections in natural materials.

Trend 1: Essence Essence is about reduction and simplicity, stripping back to the bare essentials. With Essence, we look to the past for inspiration, but view retro colours and styling in a fresh, new way.

18 | SupplierJan/Feb 2015

After seasons of red and yellow based greys, Essence, introduces a movement towards neutral and cooler greys. To generate a natural palette of neutrals and grey, materials are pure with colours derived from the materials themselves. Deepest black and linen whites become the base for natural tones of wheat, stone and elemental greys. These tones become important alongside white. Soft, feminine and poetic forms are key in this trend. In the absence of colour, texture and geometric forms are used as focal points in interiors.

Trend 3: Real

Real looks to nature and the natural environment. The trend deals with authenticity and finding balance in a complex world, exploring a new mindfulness of natural elements.

Trend 2: Impulse The opposite of Essence, Impulse is eclectic and maximal. Impulse celebrates the importance of spontaneity, encouraging us to be adventurous and creative. More is more when it comes to Impulse. Impulse evokes a sense of happiness. It’s a provocative mix, embracing items that don’t match. A wild fusion of styles, colour and patterns, geometric shapes and tantalising, energetic colours are central to the trend. There is a strong tendency for bold colour against a backdrop of white, light woodgrains, cool neutrals or fine greys. Also implied is the bleaching effect of strong sunlight that gives rise to faded colour, bringing a new take on nostalgia. Impulse allows for the unexpected and unconventional and there is only one rule: there are no rules!

Natural materials like wood or stone are central to this trend. The colour palette is soft and harmonious, with vegetal colours showing an earthy and organic tendency. Greyed mid tones are important, as are copper, bronze and golds. Wood is the cherished material and wood tones turn light and natural – and less rustic. Imperfection is authentic and desirable. Real reflects the lifestyle movement of Australians re-embracing ‘simple things’ such as farming, handmade products, home baking, gardening and craftsmanship. With the Real trend, high quality products with unsurpassed craftmanship and luxury are blended with vintage and handmade decorative items. In addition, Sookee also sees the following making an impact on interiors: • The integration of technology to create functional living spaces • The use of geometric pattern to bring visual interest to neutral colour schemes • The use of naturalistic finishes to add realism: at the same time to fool the eye and delight the touch • A growing tendency for eclecticism by using a variety of dissimilar materials ● www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Organising the drawer A well planned kitchen ensures short distances and smooth work flows. To continue meeting practical needs as the years go by, kitchen unit interiors need to be right as well. As such, drawers and pot-andpan drawers define the front of today's kitchens. This makes poorly accessible cabinets with shelves and hinged doors a thing of the past. The cleverly designed interior organisation elements

for the ArciTech drawer system from Hettich also free up space and help to keep everything neat and tidy. ArciTech interior organisation elements give kitchen manufacturers what it takes to meet the vast range of consumer preferences. From the easy to clean, versatile cutlery tray in plastic to the high quality material combination of wood and steel or stainless steel that makes a visual statement

behind the drawer front – they have the right answer for every segment. This makes interior organisation an attractive point of difference in the kitchen retail trade and provides a simple way of generating added value. The OrgaTray cutlery trays in steel and stainless steel are supplied preassembled, which means they can be

picked for consignments just as easily as the plastic cutlery trays. Added to this, they can be combined with customised, cut to size wooden elements, which means they can also be used in drawers of non-standard width. The OrgaStore solutions organise and perfectly utilise storage space in pot-andpan drawers. The dividing

elements can be positioned with extreme ease wherever the user chooses to give stacked plates and food items a secure hold. Whether purist modern in drawer colour, or classic in high quality oiled oak, interior organisation takes account of the individual's personal furnishing style. The ArciTech drawer system also makes it particularly easy for kitchen manufacturers to produce

pot-and-pan drawers with TopSides in steel or DesignSides in glass instead of a railing. As a result of the cleverly thought through platform concept all drawer components remain unchanged, and the railing's existing drill holes are used. This means that consumers' personal preferences can be accommodated cost effectively, and it provides an easy way of differentiating between ranges. â—?

Dust

Because clean working is simply healthier A study once again proves what we have already basically known for a long time: Dust arises when sanding, sawing and routing wood or mineral materials, which can pose a serious health risk. Therefore, in the interest of their own health and in compliance with legal regulations, carpenters and joiners should ensure the air in their working environment is clean and work with certified and approved mobile dust extractors. The meta-analysis* documents that the relative risk of asthma for employees exposed to wood dust is 1.53 times higher than among the general

22 | SupplierJan/Feb 2015

population. For example, in a carpenter's workshop with five employees up to 44 wheelbarrows of dust accumulate in a year (according to a projection by the Festool test laboratory). For these reasons, one should always consider the health of all those involved, employees and customers, when working with materials that generate dust.

Interesting information about dust The types of dust are as diverse as the materials from which they come. The composition decides how hazardous the respective dust is to our health. For example,

quartziferous substances in mineral dust are particularly dangerous as they can lead to lung cancer, among other things. As well as the type of dust, the duration of exposure and amount of dust are also essential in determining the level of health risk. The longer the exposure to the dust and the greater the volume of dust, the more dangerous it becomes. The size of the dust particles should also be considered because the finer the particles the deeper they can penetrate into the lung tissue. It is also important to know that the same occupational exposure limits** in the bodyshop also

apply on the construction site. This is why mobile dust extractors also always have to be used on the construction site.

Keeps your lungs healthy and your customers happy Mobile dust extractors impress not only on account of their health benefits but also from the customer's point of view. In addition to a cleaner working environment, better work results can be achieved, which ultimately leaves a lasting impression on customers and leads to more recommendations and follow-up orders. 24

It comes down to the proper dust class As dust occurs in various forms, dust extraction is simply not enough. With its product portfolio, Festool covers the entire range for dust extraction: From dust class L (simple and harmless dust such as household dust, clear coats and plaster, as well as materials such as earth, through to H (carcinogenic dust, dust with carcinogenic and pathogenic particles, as well as dust with mould spores, asbestos, mineral fibres, bitumen and artificial mineral fibres like glass wool).

Festool also offers special Class B dust extractors for combustible and explosive dust. When it comes to dust extraction, Festool always recommends using a dust extractor with the proper dust class for the material.

Festool Mobile dust extractors are an integral element of the Festool system concept. This is why Festool not only develops its own tools, but its own extractors too. They are compatible with all Festool electrical power tools and air tools. For instance, there are extractors with container volumes ranging from 10 to 48 litres, as well as some with or without automatic main filter cleaning. They*** are equipped with an integrated hose garage, Sys-Dock for holding the Systainer, Sortainer and Workcenter and embedded in a complete system of accessories and consumables – from self-cleaning filter bags to various suction hoses through to handles or tool holders. Festool also offers its unique Service all-inclusive package for all mobile dust extractors that includes a 36 month comprehensive warranty, rapid repair service, spare parts guarantee and purchase without risk. * Meta-analysis Source: Perez-Rios M, Ruano-Ravina A, Etminan M, Takkouche B. ** The occupational exposure limit is the time-weighted average concentration of a substance in the air at the workplace, at which acute or chronic damage to the health of the employees cannot be expected. When defining the occupational exposure limit, it is generally understood as eight hours exposure over five days a week during the working life. The occupational exposure limit is specified in mg/m³ and ml/m³ (ppm). *** Applies to all CT mobile dust extractors – except the CT 17 ●

Software

An ongoing investment By Anne Charlton, Marketing Manager, Integrated Joinery Solutions Technology has changed our lives in fundamental ways over the past 10 years – ways we could never have even imagined. As a simple example, just think of the impact smart phones have had on our lives on both a personal and business level. Who could have imagined such a powerful tool a decade ago, and who could imagine life without it now? It has freed us from the office, connected us to our clients no matter the distance and made everyday tasks so much easier. The same holds true for technology in the joinery industry. We have seen incredible improvements in processes and productivity from the correct use of technology. Some of this has been hardware based with improvements in machinery but much of this has been software based.

Speed of change – don’t be left behind Technology is moving at an ever increasing rate and businesses must keep pace with the new technology or risk falling behind the competition. Successful businesses are those that continuously improve processes through technology. The right technology can: • cut down on manual processes, • eliminate double handling, • reduce errors, and • reduce wastage.

26 | SupplierJan/Feb 2015

The end result of this is increased productivity and therefore profitability. In light of this increasing pace of technological advancement, software cannot be considered a static investment. It requires businesses to invest on an ongoing basis to remain competitive. You would not even contemplate doing business today with an outdated phone – the same thinking needs to be applied to software.

Importance of software Businesses continue to invest large amounts in CNC machinery to increase production capability, and rightly so. However, CNC machines need CAD/ CAM software to run efficiently. And with software only a fraction of the cost of machinery, software represents great value for money. Software has become the brains of the modern joinery operation. The right software is a key business investment, providing the continuous process improvement needed to remain ahead of the competition. Continuous investment in software allows you to break away from the competition. And your investment will be repaid many times over.

Ongoing investment Software cannot be a one-off investment, or even something that requires an investment every few

years. The best CAD/CAM software will continue to be developed on a regular schedule – preferably annually. Annual upgrades should be viewed positively and seen as a sign of a supplier who is prepared to invest in their software solution and produce advancements that benefit your business. Many joinery businesses see upgrades as an unnecessary expense but our mindset needs to change on this. Upgrades are a vital way for you to keep pace with advancements in features, functions and technology that allows you to continue to improve your processes. The right upgrades are an investment that will help your business to remain competitive into the future. If you are operating with outdated software then you stand to be left behind by your competition.

An Investment in productivity Instead of viewing upgrades as an unnecessary cost to the business, we need to shift our thinking and instead see upgrades as an investment in better, more streamlined processes. Of course this assumes that the upgrade offers meaningful improvements in functionality that is useful to your business. A good software supplier will be close to their market and will be continuously including

improvements suggested by their client base. So the upgrades will lead to real productivity improvements that will well and truly outweigh the cost of the upgrade.

Invest in the right software We heard many times at AWISA 2014 that businesses feel they have outgrown their current technology, particularly their CAD/ CAM software. They are recognising that rather than assisting them, it is restricting them. And in this case, there is little point continuing to invest by way of upgrades. So perhaps it is time to invest in a new generation software solution.

Important questions to ask your supplier • What percentage of annual revenue is committed to product development? • Is this publicly documented? • How many developers are dedicated to upgrades? • How many developers do they have overall? • How often are upgrades released? • Are upgrades ad-hoc or to a strict timetable? • What documentation is supplied with upgrades? Eg, do you get a detailed manual of the new and improved features? • What testing does the upgrade undergo before release?

Concurrent Process: new generation software can decrease time to market by supporting a concurrent, not consecutive, approach to your drawing, machining and production processes. In effect, the aim of the new generation software solutions is to allow for several processes to overlap, rather than having to be done one after the other. This approach also allows for one set-out operator to be responsible for multiple processes (eg drafting, cutting lists and machining), rather than having an operator responsible for each specific function.

Visual Machining: New generation solutions now offer visual machining, with full production information attached, allowing the user to see exactly what is going to be manufactured. Errors can be spotted on the screen before going to production Joinery specific functions: no longer does the joinery industry need to rely on software that has been adapted to the industry. You can now access solutions that have in-built joinery functionality. This saves considerable time in the setout process, again freeing up resources to move on to the next project. Interface functionality: New generation software recognises the need for you to import and export files amongst your network. An incredibly useful feature is the provision of multiple interface formats for import and export. The more file formats offered the better.

Exact parametric modelling: providing you with the ability to quickly and easily make all dimensions parametric; length, width and depth. This allows you to make changes to designs in seconds, even complex units and curves, freeing up set-out resources to move on to the next project. Fully associative: all the workshop drawings, plotsheets and machining information are automatically updated with any changes to the model.

Integrated CAD/CAM: new generation solutions are fully integrated CAD/CAM systems, which removes the need for multiple interfaces and manual processes reducing errors and wastage. Single solution: The new generation of software solutions handle ALL work streams with ease. This has numerous benefits to your business including one system to purchase, one system to learn, one process for your team to follow, one contact for technical assistance. ●

Wood plastics

Wood-plastics show upsurge Rising market growth, predominently in the USA and the Far East, cost-efficient machinery concepts with high line speeds and output rates, and new applications are all stimulating the global wood plastic composites industry, which had slowed down slightly. This was clearly shown during the 10th Wood Plastic Composites Conference which was organised by Applied Market Information (AMI), UK and held in Vienna, near the domicile of its main sponsor, battenfeldcincinnati. A very positive mood prevailed among the more than 150 guests from five continents. They responded with enthusiasm to the over 15 presentations and subsequent live demonstrations at battenfeldcincinnati’s technical lab. What is true for plastics processing in general is equally true for WPC processing: the material costs (up to 80%) take up the largest share in the overall

production costs. With the aim of reducing these costs, a trend towards more coextrusion applications is currently emerging in the industry. Simultaneously, the demand is rising for low-cost fillers such as rice husks, mineral fillers or recycled fibres. At the same time, there is an increase in the demand for cost-efficient machinery concepts to reduce the overall costs, especially for the main product line of decking profiles, for concepts that offer high production and also ensure high-end product quality. Here, hollow instead of solid profiles cater to the wish for material savings. The use of recycled materials to reduce material costs is as much an issue in the industry as is the use of biologically based and/or biodegradable materials. battenfeld-cincinnati also focused its equipment demonstrations on these trend topics and showed, in co-operation with Beologic A small profile manufactured from biopolymers filled with wood fibre.

NV (Belgium), a complete line producing a hollow WPC profile consisting of PVC filled with 50% rice husks, and a second line, on which a WPC profile based on a biopolyester resin was made. The first line, equipped with a fiberEX 93-34 D parallel twin screw extruder tailor-made for WPC processing, reached an output of 380 kg/h – a performance absolutely on a par with PVC profile production. The smaller line, equipped with an alpha 45 single screw extruder, reached an output of 40 kg/h. Complete downstream equipment from battenfeldcincinnati with perfectly matching components was used in each line as well. So battenfeld-cincinnati was able to demonstrate its special machine manufacturing competence for wood-plastic composite processing. Sonja Kahr, the company’s WPC product manager, commented: “Today, we offer suitable solutions for all applications in the WPC

industry and, above all, solutions tailored to fit every individual application. “In our product portfolio, we have single screw extruders or conical twin screw extruders to produce small technical profiles, while for high outputs we offer parallel machine models which, with their 34D processing length, provide every possible option for direct addition of colourants, degassing and flexibility in plasticizing. Both machine concepts can be optimally combined for coextrusion applications.” New applications for WPC were also displayed by the two companies Rehau and Plastic.WOOD directly beside the extrusion lines shown in production in battenfeld-cincinnati’s technical lab. While the German profile manufacturer Rehau presented a WPC sunshade system made of WPC in an aluminum frame, the Italian company Plastic. WOOD showed various injection-molded products, such as tableware and chairs made of WPC.●

Zero join edge banding "Laser" edge banding is the most significant new technology of the last five years. It's yet to take off in Australia and there are only a handful of machines in the country capable of applying the new "laser" edges. The costs are high, especially if you already have an edge bander and it's running fine. Of course, the returns could be high as well so it's worth knowing what it's all about. At Supplier, we've done our research and we're ready to show you that it's what you can't see that matters most. By Supplier magazine’s technical editor Philip Ashley What you can't see is the traditional 0.15mm glue line that looks worse as your cabinets get older. Around the world, leading companies are looking at ways to eliminate this unsightly problem. The technology is now available here in Australia from all major machinery suppliers. Before we begin, we acknowledge that traditional ways of applying glue to edge banded panels is improving and very good results can be achieved using glue applicators. Holz Her (Weinig Australia) and SCM (Gabbett) are two companies pushing the boundaries here. This article will only cover the application of edge tapes with a coextruded "functional" layer, manufactured for "laser" type applications. So, first let's look at the edge material and the first thing that you should know is that the "glue" is built into the edge tape. It's not a pre-glued edge – it's an edge tape where the "glue" or polymer forms 0.2 millimetre of the edge tape thickness. This is referred to 30 | SupplierJan/Feb 2015

as a "functional" layer and, while this is not glue, the fact remains that it's melted and sticks the tape to the panel under roller pressure. Call it an adhesive, a glue or a functional layer but the point is that it sticks the tape to the panel. One of the main drawbacks with this new technology was the lack of edge tapes available. If you could get it at all, you had to buy hundreds of metres of it and for an industry more used to jobbing than highproduction, this was a real issue. Only a few colours were readily available and this did not suit most cabinet manufacturers or, for that matter, their customers. The good news is that the edge tapes are starting to become more available from major suppliers such as Dollken (Surteco) and Rehau. At $1-08 (approximately) a metre compared to 0.40 cents for standard edge tapes, it's still expensive but the price will drop as more people use them. All of the technologies in this article will process the various types of edge

tape made for zero edge application. These include ABS (environmentally-friendly and high quality), PMMA (often referred to as 3D due to its transparency) and PP (ecological, does not contain chlorine) edges. The first technology came out of Germany around five years ago in the form of a CO2 laser system. This was very expensive, costing in the vicinity of 150,000 Euro. Around the same time, the German Dustec company started researching a system using plasma at around the same cost. The plasma system became available two years later on the German IMA machine. Following these developments (and very likely a review of the cost), a cheaper diode laser was developed at around half the cost of the CO2 laser. Laser is still expensive and maintenance and replacement parts will also be costly. On the flip side, laser edge only re-melts at 120 degrees. The re-melt temperature of EVA glue is between 60 and 90 degrees depending on the adhesive.

This means your edges will remain attached even in the harshest temperature changes. Laser is an acronym for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation" and we all know that radiation can be a form of heat. But what is plasma? The best way to describe the process is to imagine ice as a solid that is changed by energy into water. Further energy (heat) will change the water into vapour (steam or gas) and yet further high energy will change the gas molecules into plasma. The Dustec system melts the functional layer through a series of plasma jets but maintenance costs were reported to be very high. Most machinery suppliers are concentrating on laser technology and it's fair to say that unless you specifically want a plasma system for some reason, you won't see one offered for sale in Australia. So far we've been talking about heat so in retrospect it's not surprising that someone would say: "Hey, why don't we use hot air to melt this stuff?" www.suppliermagazine.com.au

The Schugoma system installed on a Felder machine

The German Schugoma company did just that and at the 2012 AWISA fair we saw their Kanten King hot air (up to 400 degrees at the nozzle) system, brought into Australia by the West Australian Beyond Tools Company. Supplier spoke to some of the other importers about this technology and they advised us that they were already working on similar ways of using the same hot air principle. Now everyone can supply it. The hot air products are Biesse Airforce, Hebrock (Wood Tech) Airtronic and Homag airTec. Biesse, Felder and Homag (on their Brandt range) also offer the original Schugoma system. Other importers will supply Schugoma on their machines and IMA (Wood Tech) also has a hot air system of their own. In addition to the many hot air systems available, Holz Her (Weinig) just released a new development that uses infrared radiation to melt the functional layer of the new edge tape. In this article, we really need to put all these into perspective. The following are guidelines only and if you are in the market for a new

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

machine you should talk to as many suppliers as you can about their product.

Laser Let's look at Laser first as it's arguably the best. I say "arguably" because with all of these products you cannot see any discernible difference. The "glue" line is still there but at only 0.025mm it's virtually invisible. There is no doubt that the larger manufacturers are exclusively using laser. It's able to be applied on much faster production lines up to 60 metres a minute. Stop for a moment because at these speeds the machine needs to be beefed up so you'll pay a premium for this. A more realistic speed on machines we're more familiar with would be 30 metres a minute and this is not a lot faster than some of the other, cheaper air and infrared systems. With laser the beam can be directed very close to where the tape meets the panel so there is an extremely short "open-time" and the bonding takes place almost immediately. The plasma system uses a series of nozzles spaced further away so the open time is slightly longer. Machines using the

laser technology are Biesse Eco Laser, Homag LaserTec, IMA Laser Edge and Stefani (Gabbett) Laser Line. Stefani also has a technology they call Slim Line that uses a CO2 laser that actually melts the inside of edge tape. The CO2 laser is expensive because it requires a cooling unit. Next is the "Ltronic" infra red system from Holz Her. I am not saying that it sits between laser and hot air. I've only put it next because the technology is similar to laser. The market will decide its value. It's new to the market and some will say it's yet to be tested. Like all these technologies, infrared is based on sound scientific principles so it will work exactly like they say it will. The system uses a NIR (near infrared radiation) module to activate the tape's functional layer. The wavelength of the NIR module is very close to that of the diode laser used by Biesse, Homag and IMA. Holz Her Ltronic is claimed to produce panels up to 25 metres a minute so it's not far behind a standard laser machine but at a much lower cost. The most-talked about technology is the hot air system. Biesse's AirForce is available in two versions. STEP1 is for medium size machines and a working speed up to 15 m/min. STEP2 is for medium to high range machines and a working speed up to 25 m/ min. Homag AirTec claims 20 to 25 metres a minute feed rate with a heat up time of three minutes that

Homag claims is unique to the market. These figures still don't compete with either the laser or infrared systems with no heat up times at all. The heat up time is necessary to allow the machine to heat up the blower and store enough compressed and heated air to start working. Most machine suppliers can fit the Schugoma system and the ones we have seen include Brandt (Homag) and Felder (a machine recently installed in Melbourne). Feed speeds are slightly lower at 20 m/min but this is still much faster than most edge banders will ever work. Hebrock's Airtronic claims the same heat up time but a much lower feed rate. Hebrock's unique energysaving feature is to only have the hot air system working when there are panels in the machine. On all other hot air units the hot air is blowing all the time. Hot air and infrared technology will cost around 20% of a laser installation, plus the machine. Your hot air machine will use between 400 and 1500 litres of hot air every minute depending on the machine and tape width. That hot air will escape into your factory and go through the roof unless you can capture it for re-use. A hot air machine will likely be very noisy (around 100 dB) as all that hot air is blown at high speeds through small nozzles. The join, however, will be waterproof, anti-bacterial and of the highest visual quality. There will likely be many customers who will specify the new product for these qualities. 32 SupplierJan/Feb 2015 | 31

Manufacturing

Traditional ways of applying glue to edge banded panels is improving and very good results can be achieved using glue applicators. SCM (Gabbett) is one of the companies pushing the boundaries here.

31 The Holz Her infrared machine is similar to laser in that it uses no hot air at all so running costs and noise levels are lower. Still want to use your glue pot for those internal panels your customers aren't worried about? No worry, your existing glue pot remains on the machine and can be changed over very quickly. There is some discussion that a roller presses more glue into the core of the board for a better bond and that certain glue systems (PUR) will still produce an excellent join. The advantage of the co-extruded edge tape is that the glue is colour matched to the edging and as long as the rollers press the tape tightly against the panel, no glue can be seen because it's the same colour as the tape and the panel.

Photos taken at 200 times magnification show almost no connecting "line" between the panel and edge tape – pretty impressive. There's talk in the trade that in five years, EVA glue could be a thing of the past but I'm not so sure. Internal cabinet panels for the average customer will not need a laser edge. Most cabinet doors are

bought in with either a foil or painted surface and that doesn't leave a lot of products for laser edging. Having said that, zero join panels will grab an increasing share of the market. Whether you take the plunge now or wait until your current edge bander needs replacing, you cannot possibly afford not to

consider getting on board with the new technology. Laser is the ‘bees-knees’ due to its high speed throughput. For most Australian companies though, either the infrared or hot air systems will certainly increase your present production and allow you to stay in the market, no matter what your customers want. ●

In applying Fusion-Edge to the panel, the co-extruded ‘functional layer’ is activated by the heat source, fusing the panel to the edge and creating a seamless joint. There is no visible joint between the functional layer and the actual edging.

The advantages of using FusionEdge include: • high production reliability; • increased productivity; • no extra hotmelt adhesive. It can be used on both straight-line edgebanders and work-centre type edgebanders. ●

High performance edge Surteco Australia is now producing its co-extruded ABS Fusion Edge locally in Australia. Initially, the Surteco FusionEdge stock range will include those decors in highest demand, with the entire stock ABS colour range providing the colour palette from which to draw all the desired decors in Fusion-Edge. For a seamless bond between edge and worktop, Fusion-Edge provides an innovative furniture edgeband that requires no additional hotmelt adhesive. It offers a real alternative to conventional 32 | SupplierJan/Feb 2015

edgeband adhesion. The visual, functional and economical benefits are diverse and already recognised by many leading furniture manufacturers and suppliers. Fusion-Edge also offers a heat and moisture resistant bond as additional benefits to the efficiency of this technology. The innovative technology of Fusion-Edge works with all currently available innovative joint technologies and heat sources: including laser, plasma and hot air.

It’s showtime Biesse Rover goes centre-stage at DPRO Display and Exhibition Centre. American white oak is a hard, heavy wood imported from eastern USA, but the Biesse Rover B 4.40 cut through the thick panels like a hot knife through butter producing another intricatelyshaped counter top for a centre-stage display at an international museum. At the controls was Scott Dimmock, managing director of DPRO Display and Exhibition Centre on the Gold Coast. He said the high-precision machine produces more than 90% of his exhibition display stands, dividers, platforms and other accessories – all custom-built at his Burleigh factory. The Biesse Rover B is the beating heart of this young business, which is creating every conceivable design and shape for the multi-billion-dollar industry it serves.

“The high-production machine has incredible flexibility,” said Scott who has created fittings for conferences and exhibitions as diversified as the Brisbane International Truck Show, the Avalon 2015 International Air Expo in Melbourne and the AWISA 2014 event in Brisbane. In fact, the Biesse Rover B 4.40 produced the entire show and stage fittings for Biesse Australia’s sprawling multi-system exhibit at AWISA 2014, installing the custombuilt components with a team of professional DPRO joiners, carpenters and painters. Scott Dimmock has been involved with the cabinetmaking industry for 30 years. He previously worked in a factory using Biesse machines exclusively. “So when I set up DRPO five years ago, the choice was Scott Dimmock supervises the operation of the Biesse Rover B 4.40 at his DPRO display and exhibition centre on the Gold Coast.
