BIESSE Group has announced its acquisition of 100% of shares in Uniteam SpA. Since 1991, this Venetian industrial company has specialised in the design and manufacture of CNC multiaxis machining centres for wood construction materials, machining of advanced materials and a range of other special applications from automotive to prototyping, among others. This union will represent a harmonious integration of synergies, according to the heads of the two companies, and both stand to benefit from the agreement: Biesse Group will further extend its product range, penetrating the niche yet highly-strategic industry of timber carpentry (beams and structural façades), drawing on the expertise of
Uniteam to enhance its range of products and applications for machining plastics and advanced composite materials. This deal is part of Biesse's development and growth project, which has seen the group expanding its business along external lines for some time. Uniteam, in turn, will benefit from the group's undeniable international exposure and visibility, taking advantage of Biesse's status as one of the main players on the global stage in terms of industrial machines. These two companies of different sizes are both driven by the same core values, which place innovation and technology at the foundation of every project, and consider research and development to be essential ingredients for industrial growth.● www.suppliermagazine.com.au

News Tasmanian wood encouragement policy THE Tasmanian wood encouragement policy is set to benefit both the environment and people’s health. State Treasurer Peter Gutwein announced that Tasmania will be the first state in Australia to develop a wood encouragement policy, the focus of which is to ensure wood is considered for the initial stages of public building projects. The policy requires responsibly sourced wood to be considered, where feasible, as the first-choice construction material in all new-build and refurbishment projects. This follows changes recently to the National Construction Code to allow
for timber products such as CLT to be utilised in more construction projects. Paul Klymenko, CEO of Planet Ark, welcomed the announcement. “Responsibly sourced, certified wood has significant positive environmental outcomes. It helps reduce the impacts of climate change, it’s renewable, it stores carbon and it prevents the release of emissions by replacing carbon intensive materials like steel and concrete,” he
said. “In addition, wood has proven health and wellbeing benefits, is cost-effective and quick to construct.” More than 20% of Australia’s carbon emissions come from constructing and maintaining the built environment, so making the switch to wood as a major building material is a key strategy for addressing climate change. This announcement follows the adoption of similar wood encouragement policies by
Latrobe City Council and Wellington Shire in Victoria and joins others around the world, including Rotorua in New Zealand, Hackney in London, British Columbia in Canada, Finland, France and The Netherlands. An increasing number of architects who design buildings for healing and learning are incorporating significant amounts of wood into their structures to capitalise on its health and wellbeing benefits. ●

Loop the Lake 2016 Bike Ride THE Loop the Lake ride has been running for many years and in 2016 had over 2000 entrants many riding as teams and many riding on their own to raise money. Hettich Australia was invited by HK Joinery Design to ride with them in the 2016 ride 86km road race. Hettich sponsored the ride shirts with joint branding with HK Joinery Design. Fred White the owner of HK and Dean Brackell of the FIAA were part of the team that participated in the Loop the Lake. The team met at 6:15 am in the dark at Speers Point to ride around Lake Macquarie,
which is one of the largest inland lakes in Australia: uphill, downhill and on main roads, it looked a big challenge even early and the day was heating up to about 30 degrees when it finished. All in all the last stage from Belmont to Speers Point was the easiest of the ride, but also the most dangerous as there was only a metre wide bike track next to the steel barriers for much of it. Paul Furlonger from Hettich Australia raised $300 for the Cancer Council and the event raised over $60,000, which is one of their best figures ever. ●

Bunnings has a plan to stay ahead of the pack McEWANS, a hardware chain Bunnings took over in 1993, used to have stores in shopping centres selling things like hooks to hang pictures or tape for fixing items. Bunnings may be returning to that old formula by opening small retail stores in shopping centres. Experts think it’s a smart move for Bunnings because it’s tapping into the market of impulsive shoppers who are after convenience. The success of these small stores will also be driven by the high number of people now living in cities, especially in apartment buildings a long way from the large hardware barns in the suburbs. Melbourne University business and economics expert, Dr David Byrne said: “We saw a similar move to this before when petrol stations started to relocate closer to supermarkets”. The hidden bin solutions have been distributed throughout Australia for the past nine years through a strong distribution network as well as being showcased at many exhibitions. Apart from the kitchen, it is also the room that needs the most storage space. All the more important, then, for people to feel absolutely at ease in this room, and furniture fittings, not least, can help to make sure they do, as the answers from the respondents show. A total of 102 consumers took part in the survey, 65 of them from Germany, the remainder from Italy, France, Sweden and India. Most of those questioned were aged between 20 and 50.

Dulux 30th Colour Awards
A new benchmark for colour usage has been set by the 2016 Dulux Colour Awards winners, announced in April. Boundaries were pushed across all categories, with colour used in daring yet cleverly considered ways to transform spaces. The 2016 judging panel were unanimously impressed by the sense of storytelling through colour and projects, which showcased fresh combinations of hues to create unique and inspiring environments. This year’s standout project was The Condensery (Somerset Regional Art Gallery) by PHAB Architects, which took out the Grand Prix prize, winning the Commercial Exterior category and Highly Commended in the Commercial Interior (Public Space and Hospitality) category.

Applauded for its exceptionally clever application of a sole colour in varying shades, The Condensery was seamlessly executed to achieve a beautiful continuity both inside and out. An array of reds to tempt any palette from deep oxides to reddish pinks, resulted in incredible beauty against the rural landscape. The Condensery tells a fascinating, layered story, whilst honouring the original architecture and history of the building. Other winners were The Alex Hotel (Commercial Interior-Public Spaces & Hospitality); The Doctor’s Studio (Commercial Interior-Office Fitout & Retail); Normanby (Single Residential Interior); O’Grady (Single Residential Exterior); Holman Hall, Monash University (Multi Residential Interior); Masterpieces of the Hermitage by National Gallery of Victoria (Installation & Events); Empire Cinema in Wellington, New Zealand (International); Infinite Mulligan (RMIT Student) and Logan Hall (Multi-Residential Exterior). In its milestone 30th year, the iconic program has acknowledged and celebrated those who have contributed to a colour journey over the last three decades, with a nod to the future as the journey continues. Fittingly, this year’s winning projects reflected an evolution of colour, with retro elements intermixed with forward-thinking palettes. ● 16 | SupplierMay/June 2016

Trendsetters and traditionalists Two megatrends dominated the many innovations of kitchen manufacturers in Milan – kitchens and living areas are increasingly merging with living areas, and they are also becoming more individual. After six intensive days the EuroCucina 2016 expo at the Salone del Mobile in Milan drew to a close on 17 April – with a new visitor record and abundant design inspirations. With the ranks of manufacturers who use Grass movement systems in their furniture constantly growing, visitors to EuroCucina 2016 were able to experience this quality product at the stands of almost 50 exhibitors.
The elegant, linear and convenient GRASS products can be flexibly integrated into a wide range of design concepts. Visitors to the EuroCucina 2016 were able to experience this quality first hand at the stands of almost 50 exhibitors.

Kitchens and living areas are becoming one For some time now kitchens and living areas have been merging together. This development was omnipresent at the EuroCucina. It was demonstrated in the colours, materials and the way that kitchen furniture is integrated into its environment. Dark, warm, earthy tones are combined with accessories in copper or gold. Shelf elements break up
the rows of kitchen units. The cooking areas are either prominently displayed or discreetly concealed. The German manufacturer Leicht KĂźchen, for example, had a kitchen on show that was only recognisable as a kitchen when the doors were opened. Otherwise the Leicht exhibits stood out from those of other suppliers, whose stands mainly featured dark colour schemes, and light and lively niches were the themes that hallmarked the design of the Leicht products. Inside the furniture, the Grass Nova Pro Scala Crystal comprehensive drawer system continued this approach. Linear, geometric forms were the distinguishing features of Dada that used several Grass products for its varied presentation. The elegant Tiomos hinge was also used as well as the cubist Vionaro drawer system, which is based on the Dynapro concealed slide system. One highlight www.suppliermagazine.com.au

18 of the Dada show presentation was the Armani kitchen that combines solid materials such as marble and metal in surprising filigree designs. Convenient Grass drawer systems were also on show at the Euromobil stand, where open and glazed cabinets created a living area feel.
Trend theme – Individualisation Stosa perfectly demonstrates just how individual kitchens can be with the exhibits featuring almost every kind of style. These ranged from contemporary hipster kitchens with a rustic style to neoclassical models. At the IBK stand visitors were also able to see for themselves the perfect options, which the Grass products offer kitchen manufacturers for developing flexible and individual furniture. The Italian manufacturer offered individualisation in its purest form: a cabinet with different, exchangeable surfaces that creates a comprehensive range of aesthetic components. Inside the furniture the individualisation options seamlessly continued with Nova Pro Scala – IBK showed how the drawer side of the drawer system can be customised to suit individual preferences in seconds. One system, flexible but easily customised, the Grass Nova Pro Scala was also on show at the Valcucine stand. The fronts and drawers of the models made by this Italian company can be replaced with minimum effort. Individualisation was demonstrated here with four different style worlds that appeal to different customer types.

A special, convenient solution was developed in collaboration with Grass for innovative kitchen users; it was possible to operate the Sensomatic damping system by foot with a motion sensor, a feature that is extremely practical when the chef's hands are both full. Individuality was also the dominating theme at the Gamadecor stand, which focused on a material collection various drawer sides and stoneware of the parent company Porcelanosa. The Spanish company demonstrated how these materials define the character of the kitchen with different kitchens grouped around the material collections, and in which Vionaro and Dynapro as well as Tiomos ensured smooth, high-quality movement. At its stand, the German manufacturer Häcker Küchen showed how individualisation is possible in series production. The company exhibited a completely handle-free kitchen in which the Grass Sensomatic permits opening of regular and pot drawers with a gentle push. With the branded drawer sides, Grass was also able to demonstrate on the Häcker exhibits how it can respond to the requirements of its customers.
at the EuroCucina 2016 were not simply rough or smooth – they were finely structured, coarse or ribbed. This new sensuality was to be found, for example, in the material mix of the Italian kitchen furniture manufacturer Arrital – one of the four new Grass customers exhibiting at the EuroCucina. The Tuscan wood specialist, Toncelli provided another tactile sensation: A Euro 380,000 kitchen was on show, which was made of fossilised wood that is 2,500 years old. The luxury kitchen, which wonderfully combines craftsmanship with art, features Vionaro with an aluminium profile. Anyone wishing to see a completely new kitchen concept had to travel to the city centre. In the Brera designer quarter Bulthaup found an ideal backdrop for its exhibits in a former church and challenged all previous concepts of kitchens as we know them. The kitchen can be individually reconfigured with a plug and play design in one working block – and constantly modified to keep pace with changing life circumstances. The basic principle: simplicity. The Grass movement systems also provided the required flexibility and quality in this case, effectively demonstrating how the design principle "form follows function" can be turned around by means of great craftsmanship and comprehension of the use of space and movement. ●

Create the future In a modest factory in the Melbourne suburb of Bayswater, partners Tim Gibney and Robert Nestig are busy building a future. Their company, Timber Imagineering, designs and fabricates timber structures using sustainable engineered wood products. Their success is based on a unique set of skills, partnered with their new Biesse 5-axis Rover A machine and intuitive bSolid software. Tim and Rob are both structural engineers and have designed many timber structures. Fifteen years ago these structures would be sent to builders who would overprice them because they didn’t really understand what they were building or it was too challenging. It was time to start fabricating themselves. Timber Imagineering was created 10 years ago. Initially the fabrication was done manually but increasing orders soon led to the purchase of a used Biesse CNC machining centre. Before Timber Imagineering, Tim lectured to design students at Swinburne University and invited Dan Jepson, a Danish timber engineer to speak about large European timber structures. Dan was involved in the design of structural elements for the Lillehammer Winter Olympic ice skating venue known as Vikingskipet (The Viking Ship). He commented that the entire production of laminated timber production in Australia was less than a small mill would produce in Denmark. Tim’s eyes were opened to the possibilities of timber design in construction. Here then was the perfect opportunity to develop a niche market. The bread and butter for Timber Imagineering is their 26 | SupplierMay/June 2016
patented ProRafter system and this produces a steady cash flow. It’s an engineered wood product combining plywood and LVL to form “C” section beams. They don’t compete with the cutthroat gang-nail truss companies; they do the work others can’t like the heavier architectural trusses. ProRafter is 20% of the business and two to three days of machining keeps their staff working for up to two weeks, leaving plenty of time for new and often unusual projects. Tim and Rob promote different systems and shapes that architects might be interested in. Over the last four years the business has really taken off with the resurgence of timber for structures so it was time to start looking for a machine that would meet the new demand, generate additional business opportunities and fully realise the potential to create modern, innovative structures. The result was the purchase of a Biesse Rover A 5-axis machining centre but it was the bSolid software that really appealed to Tim and Rob. “The bSolid software is fantastic and turns these complex projects around quickly,” said Rob. “A set-up and test that once took several hours can now be done in minutes, it’s that good..”
As engineers, Tim and Rob look at the machine differently than a wood worker and come up with new ways of working that surprise even other manufacturers. At least one day a month is spent researching new products and testing these on the machine. They take an architects vision and then make it work structurally. They look for construction work designed not just in timber but also in steel and speak to the architects about how timber can be used to create a more economical solution. An amazing example of taking a concept structure designed originally for steel fabrication and turning it into an engineered wooden framed and clad structure is the Dome. Located in the Future Manufacturing Lab of the Advanced Technologies Centre at Swinburne University, the project took three months to complete and this included installation by Imagineering. Nicknamed Pac-Man, Timber Imagineering worked with the architect to create an awardwinning piece that seems to defy gravity. Swinburne’s Factory of the Future is a dedicated space for research and teaching in manufacturing and design-led innovation. As the focal point
of innovative design and technology at the university, the dome represents the future of construction through its complex and detailed design. Timber Imagineering worked with the architects to see the concept through to an engineered structure. Professor Geoff Brooks, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Future Manufacturing said inside the dome: “It feels as though anything is possible.” The Dome was an interesting project in that the architect didn’t want the spherical shape to be faceted, but smooth and curved. Think of the Dome surface as being like an orange peel and they had to create the orange peel shapes so that they all bent and fit together to form the dome shape. Rob said: “In practical terms you can’t turn a flat wooden surface into a sphere. We mathematically worked out how to do this but there was a certain amount of fine tuning to get the program right. There is software that can do this but we didn’t have it at the time the job was required.” This work was all cut on the Biesse machine along with the frame members. Timber Imagineering relies heavily on the CNC www.suppliermagazine.com.au
Tim Gibney and Robert Nestig
machine for almost all of their machining. “The Biesse needs to be reliable and it has never let us down,” said both Rob and Tim. “We have a very good relationship – they (Biesse) understand what we need and presented us with the right machine at the right time.” Rob added: “We love to challenge the machine and the Biesse has lived up to every task we’ve thrown at it”. Rob went on to say: “For us the Biesse means labour saving and accuracy, but also the ability to do things others can’t. The ability to look into the future and match our timber engineering skills to the machine smarts to create ongoing and interesting work is the core of our business. We’re not chasing the top end of the market: it’s the geometrically challenging work that we want to look at and we know the Biesse is up to the task.” “New markets exist in architectural structures,” said Tim. “Architects want to have part of their building envelope with green star accreditation so there’s plenty of work to tender for.” Imagineering recently signed a contract to manufacture and construct the largest timber “shed” in the Southern Hemisphere that comes in cheaper than the same shed in steel. “Wood is vastly underutilised and machines such as Biesse that can transfer design ideas into product are great,” said Tim. “Our software includes AutoCad www.suppliermagazine.com.au
and Revit. CAD drawings representing the structural design are sent to the bSolid software that converts the CAD drawing into shop drawings and then CNC machine programs.” In Europe, designs are more free-flowing and architects are seeing this and looking at doing similar work in Australia. Architects go to Timber Imagineering to find out what’s achievable before going to the market with it. Whatever the structure, Tim and Rob can often offer a more costeffective solution in timber that achieves the same end result. A conforming tender is often submitted with an alternate tender that takes into consideration the smarts of the Biesse where they can save some of the costs. Well-known Australian industry analyst, Phil Ruthven AM said: “Play to your strengths, develop niche markets and be the best at what you do”. Timber Imagineering is a clever company with a very clever name. They don’t have many competitors but what does set them apart is their ability to provide the complete engineering, fabrication and install solution. Their Biesse machine is also different to what their competitors use and offers an advantage in performance, capacity and software. Tim said: “We’ve got ourselves a name so we’re doing very well at the moment and, with Biesse, the future is looking very good”. ●

Safer and more productive Materials handling is more often than not thought of in terms of OHS. Equipment is purchased for heavy and difficult to manage products such as large panels. This is all fine but more and more businesses are realising the production advantages that can be achieved through the more efficient handling of manufactured product. Where it took two or more people to handle a large sheet of 32mm thick board, it now takes just one. Where material was damaged because it was slid along a machine table, it’s now defect-free and of consistent quality because of efficient materials handling equipment. The most respected name in materials handling equipment is Millsom and, at AWISA, the company will present two products that will make work not only safer but more productive. These two products are unique and will be on display at the show along with Millsom’s horizontal handling lifters. The first is the vacuum lifting device VacuMaster Window for handling glass plates. The

VacuMaster Window is an ideal solution for the handling of glass and windows and is designed for loads with a weight up to 300 kg. The vacuum lifting device is combined with a crane system manufactured in Australia by Millsom and is simple to operate and ergonomically designed. The glass can be turned to the left and right by 90 degrees so glass can be installed into window frames simply and accurately. The assembled window can then be moved with the lifter. The second product is the VacuMaster 180 for rotating wooden panels by 180°. The VacuMaster 180 is designed to turn sheets by 180° and for weights of up to 500 kg and for the largest commercially available sheets. The sheets can be lifted from the stack, turned over if necessary and then placed onto a beam saw or CNC machine table by only one person. Expensive veneered sheets will no longer be at risk of damage. The easy-to-move overhead crane system has a working area to suit almost every situation. ●
Edge banding is still one of the most technically demanding jobs in the cabinet shop. Despite all the modern technology, panels still need to be transported through a complex machine, glue needs to be accurately applied to the panel and many separate units are needed to process the various edges. Add to this the demand for near-invisible edge joints using PUR glue and the edge bander could become the most critical machine in your workshop. The modern cabinet shop no longer manufactures for stock. Every job is different so machinery that is flexible and easy to set up is essential. The OTT Tornado Plus edge bander may be just what you are looking for. It’s designed to be easy to use and flexible in the way it can be changed from one glue source to another. The OTT comes with two glue pots and the CombiMelt Service Station, allowing a speedy turnaround from one job to the next. CombiMelt is the heart of every OTT edge bander and suited for processing both EVA and PUR glues. It allows the quick changeover of the machine to different glue swap containers and thus to new types and colours of glue. Using the optional hose connection, PU glue may be injected directly from an external melting unit. The so-called Zero Glue Joint is achieved through application of the thinnest layer of PUR glue. The precise trimming and processing units of the OTT machine create a finished work piece that looks perfect.
The changeover of PUR glues, especially between white and transparent, is made simple using the OTT Service Station. The application head and glue pot can be removed separately and can be preheated on the Service Station, ready to use quickly. The mobile Service Station can be also used for cleaning. A dry box supplied with compressed air is used to preserve pre-melted PUR glue for several days, saving expensive glue. This was not previously possible. The OTT Tornado Plus will be on display at AWISA in Melbourne. I&J Machinery (WA, SA and VIC) along with Austwood Machinery (NSW) and Tuckwell Machinery (QLD) are the exclusive agents for this highly versatile machine. The Tornado Plus is capable of speeds up to 18 metres a minute including corner rounding, coiled material and timber edges up to 15mm thick and panel thickness of 60mm. It comes with a touch screen to call up the different gluing programs; multi spray units for all surfaces including sensitive edge and a nesting system for hinge holes. The machine is made in Austria and because of its weight, vibration has been eliminated. OTT has been in business over 50 years and has developed a strong reputation for quality edge banders. OTT edge banders are in use across Australia and New Zealand and several companies have up to four machines, such is their reliability and performance. ●

Cost v benefit of 3D design software As with other technologies, the purchase of quality 3D design software represents a significant investment. Yet the return on this investment can be huge. Smaller cabinet making businesses often operate on a tight budget, and can baulk at spending $XXXX on a piece of software. Particularly when tools, rent, insurances and other costs don’t leave much room to move. But what if you look at it the other way around – that an investment in 3D software will give you more room to move. Here are some of the ways you get your money back – and more – when you invest in Cabinets by Computer’s KD Max:
2. Create a point of difference
1. Win more jobs
4. Cast your net wider
KD Max helps you win more jobs. For starters, customers today want to see exactly what they are getting. They have high expectations – many people want to see 3D drawings of the proposed design, so if you don’t deliver a drawing and your competitor does, there’s a good chance you’ll lose the job. Plus, in providing 3D drawings to customers, you are showing these customers that you provide a complete service from design right through to install. It’s a great way to build your business profile and reputation.
Many cabinet makers who are proficient in KD Max find themselves doing design work for other cabinet makers. It helps you grow your business in a way that’s not possible without the design software. As long as you are prepared to invest some of your time into learning how to get the most from the software, then an investment in KD Max will quickly pay off. You’ll be notching up more sales, saving valuable time, and doing more types of work before you know it. ●
36 | SupplierMay/June 2016
If you’re operating in a competitive environment, KD Max could be your secret weapon. It provides a great point of difference, helping your business stand out from the crowd.
3. Save time KD Max can automate much of the quoting process. Once you’ve drawn up a design, it can generate cutting lists and pricing, enabling you to respond faster to customers’ requests for quotes.
Improved productivity through software The interior design and joinery business has always been tough but, especially in the last two years, competition has increased significantly. The more the competition on the market increases, the more the companies have to be productive to win tenders. As the material prices and labour costs are more or less maxed out, the industry is now about to improve their workflows and that is only possible with software and better organisation. Most of the industry has already started to implement some kind of software in order to speed up their process in certain departments. AutoCAD 2D became a standard for design and technical shop floor drawings within the industry. However, all other necessary information during the whole production process is usually still created manually, which results into high time consumption and errorprone processes. This is not necessary anymore. It is obvious: companies could save a great deal of time in sales, engineering and production if they didn’t need to reinvent the wheel every time. What makes it complicated is the amount
of different work steps which you have to process during the execution of an order: estimation, shop floor drawings, cutting lists, BOQs, stock handling, material orders, time calculation and capacity planning for the factory, quality control, shipping organisation, CNC files and so on. Plus, of course, at the end of the day it would be necessary to do a post-calculation of the job – all this in as little time as possible. How to optimise such a complex process? The only way is to make information, which has been already created, available for the next process. Not as a sheet of paper – it has to be digital so the information can be used straight away. This is exactly what CAD+T Software is offering to the interior business. Even for custom made projects, the information will only be created once and all other necessary data will be created by the software automatically – from design to installation. The heart of the system is the drawing. Still built on AutoCAD, the CAD+T add-on gives draftsmen the possibility of drawing 38 the parts directly in 3D www.suppliermagazine.com.au

The cubist drawer system With Vionaro, Grass has created an exciting design solution for all applications in living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms. This comprehensive system, which won the coveted Red Dot Award in 2014, features a slim 13-millimetre drawer side based on the Dynapro concealed slide system, itself a winner of the prize in 2010. The extremely slim drawer side is fully in keeping with the trend towards minimalist forms and luxury materials through to the furniture interior. "The new style is minimalism," said Grass Global Brand Manager Harald Klüh. "We dispense with everything that is not absolutely necessary and concentrate on the simple yet elegantly efficient basics."
are formed from a single section and therefore have a completely smooth surface. This means Vionaro has everything that Dynapro has: perfect running characteristics due to its synchronised movement, combined with very low pull-out forces and excellent load capacities of up to 70 kilos. The familiar threedimensional adjustment option is integrated into the drawer side on the Vionaro sytem and can be easily actuated inside the drawer with a conventional PZ2 screwdriver. The new optional Dynapro depth adjustment now makes even four-dimensional adjustment a possibility.
Creative scope for every conceivable furniture design With its luxurious simplicity
Cubist design meets track- and the use of a wide range proven movement comfort of different materials and The cubist and minimalistic drawer system, Vionaro, – the result of the many years of research and development work – is a passionate statement in favour of the beauty of the right angle, which ensures that no storage space is wasted inside the drawer. colours, Vionaro is ideal for all contemporary living spaces. The system is available as a high-quality, anodised aluminium version and a steel version in the three standard colours snow white, silver grey and graphite as well as the special colour golden brown. Grass offers Vionaro in drawer side heights of 63 mm, 89 mm, 121 mm, 185 mm and 249 mm. The front stabiliser integrated into the 185 mm and 249 mm side walls permits the installation of fronts with a height of up to 780 mm – without the use of a railing. The cross-divider is particularly practical for the optimum utilisation of storage space. The aluminium rod can be cut to length and is simply fitted onto the drawer sides, enabling individual compartmentalisation of the drawers.
With this clever product design, no visual compromises are necessary for the additional function – thanks to its colour and shape, the cross-divider perfectly matches the design of the drawer and therefore ensures a coherent exterior appearance.
Perfect design meets perfect handling The Vionaro drawer system in aluminium or steel can be fitted onto the same concealed slide system as a wooden drawer. Installation of the system is extremely simple, and complex machining of the drawer bottom panel is not necessary. In addition, the back panel clip that is prefitted in the drawer side guarantees an elegant connection. A clip system also allows fast, simple attachment of the front to the drawer side. Various drilling jigs and assembly aids are available to ensure particularly convenient and time-saving production. To guarantee and provide optimum information and service for the cubist drawer system, Grass has launched an international, interactive microsite in six languages at www.vionaro.com.●

Wood
Wood is good Planet Ark conducted an online survey in late 2014 to see what Australian’s attitudes and opinions were towards wood. A literature and empirical studies review and an online survey were conducted late 2014 and released late March last year. It surveyed 1003 Australians aged 14 to 64 and nationally, representative in terms of age, gender and location. It was developed with support from Forest and Wood Products’ Australia’s Wood, Naturally Better program. It reviewed studies analysing the health and well-being benefits of wooden interiors in homes, business, schools and medical facilities. The survey identified improvements to a person’s emotional state and level of self-expression; reduced blood pressure, heart rate and stress; and improved air quality through humidity moderation. Australians appear to be drawn towards wood due to feelings of warmth, comfort, relaxation and links to nature but Australians are still confused about wood certification. Their general knowledge about the use of wood and its benefits is low. A Japanese study compared the initial physiological response of 14 people sitting in rooms 46 | SupplierMay/June 2016
with either wooden or steel wall panelling. The pulse and heart rate of each subject was measured every second for 20 seconds whilst facing the panelled wall covered by a curtain, followed by 90 seconds with the curtain removed and the wooden or steel panel visible. The study found that exposure to wooden panels significantly decreased the blood pressure of subjects, whilst exposure to steel panels significantly raised it. An Austrian study examined the heart rates of 30 people who slept in a stone pine bed for three weeks and compared it to their heart rates when sleeping in a wood imitation bed for three weeks. Sleeping in a stone pine bed reduced heart rates by 3500 beats per day compared to when subjects were sleeping in a wood imitation bed. The studies examining the effects of wooden rooms and furnishings clearly demonstrate that the presence of wood has positive physiological effects, lowering blood pressure heart rate and stress responses when compared to other material types. A New Zealand study presented 69 adults with images of 10 modern
corporate interiors, chosen from recently published books showcasing contemporary design. Five of the interiors featured significant amounts of wood, whilst the other five featured no wood at all. Participants were asked to “identify the organisation you would most like to work for”. The presence of wood products within a corporate environment drastically influenced first impressions, with study subjects considerably more likely to want to work for organisations that featured wooden furnishings. Putting all of this into practice is the Dandenong Mental Health Centre, the largest mental health facility in Victoria, designed by Bates Smart and the Irwin Allsop Group. Natural timber is used extensively in the walls and ceilings throughout the building, both inside and out, to create a residential and suburban feeling. The Martian Embassy in Redfern Sydney is a creative writing centre for young people. The centre is designed to be a fusion between a whale, a rocket and a time tunnel, created by oscillating plywood ribs, red planet light and sound projections in order to provoke fun and unleash creativity. Project partners Will O’Rourke and The Glue Society stated that the warm tones of wood transformed the previously long, dark and unloved shop into a source of inspiration that kids are excited to walk into. The Martian Embassy was a runner up in the Interior Fitout category of the Australian Timber Design Awards. A common concern raised in regards to the
use of wood as a building material is whether or not there is an increased risk of fire. Engineers and fire researchers today have a significant body of knowledge of how timber constructions perform in fire. The structural stability of timber is well understood and importantly it is predictable, allowing timber constructions to be created that meet the same fire safety codes as steel and concrete buildings. This fire resistance increases with the thickness of the wooden elements because when timber is exposed to fire the outer layer burns and turns to char. Charring creates a protective layer that acts as insulation and delays the onset of heating for the cold layer underneath. In addition to its associated health benefits, the use of responsibly sourced certified wood can have significant positive environmental outcomes and help reduce climate change. Through the process of photosynthesis trees remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it as biomass, mostly wood. Planting more trees will therefore absorb more carbon and help reduce the impact of emissions. When responsibly sourced wood is used as a building material or to create longlasting products those items become a carbon store, locking carbon out of the atmosphere. Using wood also means that the use of more carbon intensive, non-renewable materials like concrete and steel can be reduced. It seems that yes, wood is good and your customers should know about it. If I were in the business of making pens, I'd teach people how to write. If you’re selling furniture, its important customers know how it’s made and how to care for it”.
7. Pay attention to your supply chain. Guy Morgan advises: “You don’t want to be surprised by a supplier that goes bust.” Similarly, look to your
retailers; you don’t need them disappearing either.
8. Improve quality and performance. Forsstrom admits that he is never pleased with what they've achieved. "If you belong to a winning team, last year isn't good enough.” Morgan backs this up, saying: “Successful companies gain a competitive advantage by continual improvement.”
9. Invest in your staff. A US university study recently found that manufacturers making investments in training came through downturns better. Billionaire Warren Buffett said of getting the right people: “If you're looking for a manager, find somebody that's intelligent, energetic and has integrity. If they don't have the last, (you can) be sure they don't have the first two. If you have somebody who lacks integrity, you want them to be dumb and lazy”.
10. Invest in your company. Facilitate total productive maintenance and invest in new technologies to reduce set-up and manufacturing costs and reduce batch sizes. ●

10 quick facts you need to know about equipment finance After 25 years of financing equipment for capital intensive industries, I thought I would share a few facts which will assist business owners in getting this area right. By Michael Ryan, Senior Business and Equipment Finance Broker at Finlease, michael@finlease.com.au 1) Changes to stamp duty
up to $10mil p/a. A massive saving.
Stamp Duty in NSW on Chattel Mortgage has finally been abolished putting savings back in your pocket from the 1July 2016.
3) Interest rates can vary by as much as 1%, so it pays to shop around
2) Changes to STS pooling Recent May Budget: the ability for companies to elect to place their assets into the STS pool and claim depreciation rates of 30% DV (15% DV in year one) has just been opened up to companies with a turnover
Unlike home loans, interest rates on equipment finance are very much open to the competition of a free market and, as such, can often be negotiated down by as much as 1% if sufficient competition is created between financiers, so it pays to shop around. A saving of $100 p/m over 60 months is $6,000 and, if

your company runs at a 10% margin, that saving is equal to an extra $60,000 in top line income.
assets including real estate, so stay away from borrowing for equipment where your mortgage is.
4) The only hard security needed is the asset itself, so don't fall into the bank trap
5) Spreading your equipment debt across several financiers provides many bonuses
The only hard security for equipment finance should be the equipment itself. Where a client uses their own bank for equipment finance, there is a very good chance that this loan will be secured (cross collateralised) against other
Equipment finance allows a company to spread a greater portion of the overall debt to a broader base of financiers, which means less exposure to their existing bank, greater competition between financiers to drive lower interest rates.
50

6) Thinking about equipment finance the same way as a credit card limit has its benefits Just as in the same manner as you are approved for a "limit" on your credit card, pre-approved bulk facilities for equipment finance can be set up in advance across several financiers and at no cost, making it easier for companies to acquire additional machinery at short notice without having to seek finance approvals in each instance. Facility limits, which can be set up for amounts from $200,000 to $3million, are simply reviewed every year at the time the client has updated financial information.
7) Used equipment is as easy to finance as new equipment Quality used equipment
(which is often substantially cheaper than new) can have finance arranged just as easily as new equipment and so presents as an excellent alternative to new equipment.
8) Private sales can definitely be financed and a lot of money saved Competitive equipment finance is easily available where the used equipment is being purchased from a private vendor. These private sale equipment finance arrangements do need a couple of additional steps performed: however, the savings can be significant compared to new machines or used machines through a dealer. The extra steps are simply an inspection of the goods and a more rigorous PPSR regime to ensure clear
title is passed onto the financier.
9) Financing GST is cheaper debt than an overdraft GST can, in most instances, be financed as a part of the equipment finance facility if required by the client and in doing so provide what is in essence a very low cost working capital debt, which is substantially cheaper than traditional overdraft rates. In the event that the customer does not want to finance the GST long term but does not want to pay for it out of cash flow at the time of purchase, an extra payment can be made at month four of the transaction to coincide with the period where the client has the cash from their subsequent BAS refund.
10) All equipment finance is not the same when it comes to tax deductions Although CHP & Chattel Mortgage structures limit a company's tax deductions to the interest and depreciation components of the asset (which is often far less than the physical annual payments of the debt), the prudent and appropriate use of an equipment finance lease can often provide a tax deduction equal to the monthly or annual payments being made under the lease, as the monthly payment itself is the deduction. This is often an under-utilised product, which is well worth investigating with your accountant and may save significant tax dollars. â—?
Product Update Highly flexible and up to five times faster THE variable Bessey STC toggle clamps combine innovative technology with the highest Bessey quality. Bessey has succeeded in transferring the screw clamp principle of quick adjustment to different opening widths to its toggle clamps making it possible to clamp different workpiece thicknesses without adjusting the clamping screw manually. The clamping force can be adjusted perfectly to the workpiece, because not all applications or materials require the 50 | SupplierMay/June 2016
maximum clamping force. Thanks to an adjusting screw in the joint, the clamping force can be adjusted according to the individual requirements without having to use tools. Instead of the usual screw head with rubber covering, all Bessey toggle clamps have a moving pressure plate with a removable protective cap. This allows even delicate materials such as veneered or painted surfaces to be clamped gently.
Spark Trap A new product invention/introduction for the timber industry is the Spark Trap from Airtight Solutions. The Spark Trap is designed to cool flying embers in the air stream below the temperature of ignition before it reaches the dust collector (via the ducting) and start a fire or even an explosion.
This is highly relevant for the woodworking industry as timber dust and MDF is actually combustible, capable of causing a devastating explosion when mixed with and ignited by a spark or an ember. This industry first has been independently tested to be 98% effective.

Machinery Massive crowds at the show.
Holz-Handwerk 2016 The Holz-Handwerk fair is held in alternate years to the world-leading Ligna fair as is our own AWISA show. Ligna is such a major event that few national shows are held in the same year. However, Holz-Handwerk is a significant event in its own right and for workers of solid wood it probably surpasses Ligna in relevance. Philp Ashley reports: The Holz-Handwerk fair is held in alternate years to the world-leading Ligna fair. It’s a pity that it’s held in the same year as our own AWISA because this keeps Australian visitors away from the show. The same situation occurs with other country’s national woodworking trade fairs such as W16 Birmingham (formerly Woodmex) in the UK. Ligna is such a major event that few national shows are held in the same year. However, Holz-Handwerk is a significant event in its own right and for workers of solid wood it probably surpasses Ligna in relevance. The show is held in conjunction with Fensterbau Frontale, the international joinery fair, and this year attracted a record 110,000 plus visitors, mostly cabinet makers (60%), furniture makers (11%), interior designers (10%) www.suppliermagazine.com.au
joiners and carpenters (6%). Holz-Handwerk was held between 16 and 19 March in Nuremberg, Germany. It’s fair to say that a handful of Australian manufacturer’s visited the show so why write about it? Well, it’s a hidden gem and for any serious manufacturer, worthy of at least one visit that probably won’t be your last. If you’ve contemplated Ligna (Germany); Xylexpo (Italy) and IWF (Atlanta, USA) then you should add Holz-Handwerk to your list. Even though Australian visitors weren’t expected in great numbers, Australian suppliers were there to get a feel for the latest trends and stock up their knowledge base prior to our own AWISA show. I caught up with Neil Forbes and Craig Stevens from Weinig/Holz-Her, Stefan Kremer and Stefan Marquart
from Felder, Paul Edmunds and Darren Capogreco from Gabbett (Scm and FomIndustrie) along with Andrew Bismire (Australia) and Wolf Hoheisen (New Zealand) from Leitz Tooling. They said that this is a far better show than Ligna and that more Australian manufacturers would benefit from visiting. The Australian salespeople have much more time to spend with their clients and if they know you are coming, they can get you into a meeting with their top tech people. The show is much smaller in size so it's easier to get around.
Biesse Biesse increased its exhibition space by 30% this year to put 12 machines and an entire bLab area dedicated to software solutions. Jacek Pigorsch,
CEO of Biesse Deutschland said: “Technology brings together the high output numbers seen in the assembly chain with the tailor-made value of artisan production”. Following the Think4ward core concept, which stands for the forward-thinking automation and software solutions to help customers leverage the fourth industrial revolution, Federico Broccoli, Wood Division Director/ Sales and Subsidiaries Division Director at Biesse, said: “4.0 is, for us, not only a number representing the so-called new industrial revolution, but a real commitment toward our customers, to take them, thanks to our “4.0 ready” technologies, to those efficiencies nowadays so essential in order to be competitive in a more and more global market”. Rover A, Rover B FT and Rover C machines on display combine flexibility and performance allowing the manufacture of furniture, staircase and door and window components with ease and no limits, ensuring quality, accuracy and total reliability. The numeric-control multicentre Winline One is designed for the production of standard and custom door and window frames and aimed at small and medium sized firms and door/window frame producers. The edge-banding solutions, sharing the AirForce zero-edge technology, are suited for craftsmen and small businesses that need a flexible, user-friendly solution with customised production. Biesse presented a range of edge-banders, vertical CNC processing machines, wide belt sanding and drilling and insertion machines. These will all be on show at AWISA. A large space was reserved for an advanced working cell: the cutting centre Selco SK 4 and Winstore K3 automated magazine for the optimised management of panels. Characterised by ease of use and advanced technical solutions like twin pushers, these two complementary pushing devices allow an increase in productivity by up to 25%. 54 | SupplierMay/June 2016
An entire area dedicated to Biesse software completed the wide range of technologies. The bSuite enables users to design and implement very easily every product, without any limits. Marketing and Communications Manager Raphaël Prati said: “The bSuite package is an example of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”.
Felder Felder had by far the busiest stand in the traditional woodwork hall demonstrating the strength of the brand in Europe. The Nuremberg fair celebrated Felder’s 60 years milestone. In addition to the full range of CNC
machining centres there were some useful new additions to the broad Felder range. One that caught my eye was the Structura 60.02 surface distressing machine. Felder call it structuring, hence the machine’s name. The basic principle is a continuous belt feeding wood up to 1300mm wide under two top mounted brushing heads. The heads are open at one side to get the full 1300mm width so the machine is only about a metre wide. Steel and Tynex brushes convert the smooth surface of the wood or panel to one that more closely resembles the look and feel of natural wood. The machine is fitted with a variable speed feed belt and
has a 200mm height capacity. The machine would be great for kitchen manufacturer’s where the customer wants the look and feel of real wood. Other innovations from Felder included the Kappa 550 e-motion panel saw with an innovative software program. The software includes 11 new functions for a wide range of advanced cutting solutions such as triangles, polygons and stairs. A program for roof rafters is also included. The Profit H350 5-axis CNC machining centre comes with a variable position extraction hood to capture all the waste from large workpieces, a very deep 1550mm Y-axis and a brake on the “C” and “A” axis of the 5-axis head. Felder will present live CNC demonstrations of both furniture and cabinet making at AWISA.
Weinig The Weinig Group was represented in Nuremberg with an integrated stand concept for solid wood and panel processing. The healthy visitor numbers on the stand

on all four days of the trade fair were reflected in excellent sales: twice as high as those in 2014. It was also the first time that the trade fair presence was shaped by the THINK WEINIG motto. The slogan represents the new sales and marketing strategy with which Weinig aims to communicate its unique group expertise even more powerfully in the market. “Whatever the challenge they face, our customers should think of Weinig first,” said Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Gregor Baumbusch, underlining the intention behind THINK WEINIG. The Weinig Group presented 39 innovative exhibits across the entire value chain in solid wood and panel processing. One innovative highlight was the premiere of the Powermat 1500. The high-performance moulder has the new ComfortSet simple operating concept and is equipped with CNC-controlled axes. The modular system makes the Powermat 1500 extremely flexible. Besides planing and profiling machines, Weinig's window production technology also attracted great interest in Nuremberg. The spotlight was on Industry 4.0, which is synonymous www.suppliermagazine.com.au
with intelligent production and has been broken down by Weinig to meet the requirements of window manufacturers, particularly for small business. Weinig network the cross-cut saw with the pre-planing machine and the CNC processing centre for fully automated production. Holz-Her, part of the Weinig Group since 2010, displayed a complete range from panel sawing through CNC processing and the cost-effective Ltronic zero joint edge-banding process, proving its extraordinary expertise in this market segment. I am reliably informed that four zero-edge machines have been installed in Australia already and Weinig claims an impressive 80 edge banders sold last year in this country – a figure that should put Weinig/ Holz-Her near the top of the edge-bander supply chain. Of interest to panel producers is the new multi-function rounding units with automatic adjustments through numerical controlled servo motors.
Leuco Bernhard Fox, Product Manager, Leuco said: “Magnetic panels are currently in high demand at exhibitions, in interior construction and
in shop construction”. The material is prized for its very high level of adhesion, combined with the writability of the surfaces and diverse areas of application. An iron foil 0.2 mm thick embedded in the laminate provides the high level of adhesive force. Of course, iron doesn’t do much for your saw-blades and while common HW-tipped circular saw blades can be used, the blade life is drastically reduced. At Holz-Handwerk in Nuremberg, for the first time Leuco presented circular saw blades developed for use with magnetic panels. Manufacturers now have access to a saw blade for chip-free cuts and long edge life, tipped with a highly specialised type of tungsten carbide. Sawing iron-foiled panels with common tipped circular saw blades can even cause sparks, resulting in a fire hazard that in furniture factories would be unacceptable. With the new Leuco blades, sparks are reduced to a minimum and no special precautions need to be taken. Leuco also presented a new diamond tipped, flexible shank-type cutter for working with solid core and solid surface materials on CNC machines. With just
one cutter, users can now joint, chamfer, round off, and mill a rounded contour on solid core and solid surface materials. Thanks to its plunge tip, the cutter can also dip, for instance for pocket milling, making it a five-in-one tool. Chucked in a precision clamping device, it is possible to create chip-free, smooth edge surfaces without grooves. The diamond tips guarantee the longest available edge life with these abrasive materials. The tool saves valuable tool changer places on the CNC machine and is perfect for anyone processing a wide mix of materials for a broad customer base.
Scm Gabbett Machinery’s Paul Edmunds was on hand to demonstrate the new Round X corner rounding system for Scm edge banders that puts two-motor technology into the space previously used by only one motor. The Round X unit allows for both the simultaneous trimming and rounding operations. The two joint operations, in a single group, require less space and, together with the working distance between panels of only 600 mm, give a reduction in time for the edge banding. We got a sneak peek at what Gabbett will show at AWISA in July. Machines will include the Accord 25 for window production with a 250mm vertical stroke. Edge banders will include the new 360 and the popular 560 machines with Round X units. Nesting cells are included in the mix, along with classical machines like the impressive L’invincibile Si X sliding table saw with Easy Touch control panel. SupplierMay/June 2016 | 55

A new machine type is the Scm Startech 21 (and 27) CN machine for drilling and grooving. Ideally suited to the small manufacturer; this computer controlled machine is easy to program, takes up only a few square metres of space and comes with seven vertical and three horizontal spindles and grooving saw. The machine has some parametric capabilities but, if you make kitchen cabinets and that’s all you need, the Startech CN looks like a sound investment for not much money. Gabbett is strong in the field of aluminium processing for windows and doors. Darren Capogreco said that new to Australia is the development of software to produce the range of products from the extensive range of aluminium profiles from the many suppliers. Around 80% of the aluminium window industry is manual but this is changing. If a fabricator has 15 or so punch tools at present, a CNC machine becomes a better proposition. Gabbett are currently working to develop the programs for an extensive range of profiles and these will be available to purchasers of FomIndustrie equipment. Software integration will make the purchase of high-end equipment more viable. 56 | SupplierMay/June 2016
The completely redesigned Altendorf F45 was unveiled at the Holz-Handwerk trade fair for the first time. Altendorf has completely updated all key elements from the machine frame to the motors and control units. The old model names have also changed as Altendorf moves to a new product policy based around modularity and versatility in configuration. Now all configurations go by the same name F45. The new Altendorf won the iF Design Award in 2016 for its “Functionality with modern materials, design and use of colour in particular and identified the modular nature of the configuration options as epitomising modern pragmatism”. Altendorf has now won this award eight times.
Homag New from the Homag group is the Holzma HPP130 beam saw that can now make additional cuts to remove stresses from boards prone to this. The HPP300 automated line can now handle profiled surfaces and the Brandt edge bander top pressure is now a belt, not rollers for more even distribution of pressure. There’s a new glue application system (ask your dealer about this) and the edge bander return system now rotates the part so the operator doesn’t need to work out which way it’s fed into the machine. Weeke now has 5-axis technology, previously only available on Homag branded machines and new technology means that no protective fences are needed for some CNC machines. Homag edge banding units on CNC machines now have
the glue pot located at the front of the machine. Homag claim this delivers 10% more production over a glue pot at the back where all the other brands’ are. Clamps can now hold the thinnest joinery components on the market and need only 7mm of surface area to hold the part effectively. The Butfering STW200 wide belt sander has been re-engineered and is now 10% narrower for the same width and an automated cardboard box cutting machine can scan your product and make a box to suit that one part.
Hardware Hafele’s hot items included electrically-adjustable height cabinets and a drawer that when opened, turns into additional bench space. On their stand they also displayed a range of metal storage items to attach to iron-film wall panels (see Leuco above) to hold paper towel, wine bottles and other most-used kitchen items. There was much interest in the Grass Nova Pro doublewall drawer system. The designers say the aim was not to create “An eye-catching design in its own right but a neutral style that blends in harmoniously”. The Nova Pro won a German design award.
Hettich placed its focus on drawers, hinges and sliding door fittings with the AvanTech drawer system and Actro 5D (hidden) drawer runner and Sensys “push to open” hinges. Blum showed its newest premium metal drawer system, the LEGRABOX. It is available in two finishes that complement a wide variety of styles and colours, and four drawer side heights cover a wide range of design options in the kitchen, bathroom or furniture applications. In this article we have presented only a small snapshot of what was on show at Holz-Handwerk. We saw 1,288 exhibitors from 40 countries and at AWISA this year we will see 131 exhibitors. I’m a great fan of AWISA and have been to every single show since its beginning. AWISA is a fantastic international fair with local focus and the organisers should be justifiably proud of what they have created. However, serious manufacturers cannot ignore the breadth of product available at a big, leading international show and Holz-Handwerk complements AWISA perfectly. The next event will be held 21 to 24 March 2018 and I suggest you seriously consider going. ●
