New WoodSolutions Design Guide 45 Created to introduce a Code of Practice for applying fire retardant coatings to wood products, the new WoodSolutions design guide is available for free download from WoodSolutions.com.au. As wood products become increasingly specified in a wide range of construction projects, understanding the fire properties required by the National Construction Code (NCC) and how wood products can comply is essential. Currently, the NCC does not permit the use of fire retardant coatings to achieve the required fire hazard properties under the Deemedto-Satisfy (DTS) provisions. The Guide has been written to provide a Code of Practice to enable the use of fire retardant coatings applied to wood products,
4 | SupplierMay/June 2018
via the Performance Solution pathway, as a means of achieving the fire hazard properties required by the NCC. This Code of Practice is intended to supplement the NCC by addressing issues relating to the supply, testing, installation and maintenance of fire retardant coatings. Typical fire retardant coatings include: paints and varnishes, intumescent coatings, encapsulation coating systems and surface treatments with liquids. “Fire retardant coatings have been used extensively in many other jurisdictions throughout the world (USA, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand) for several decades and this Guide draws on this international experience. Hopefully, in the near future, the benefits of using these coating systems as a means
of protecting building material surfaces will be a DTS Solution in the NCC” said Boris Iskra, National Codes and Standards manager for Forest and Wood Products Australia. Fire retardant coatings form part of a system comprising; the wood product substrate, the fire retardant coatings, and any primers, undercoats and top coats that may be used in conjunction with the fire retardant. “This publication is an invaluable resource for professionals specifying and building with wood and wood products,” said Eileen Newbury, National Marketing and Communications manager for Forest and Wood Products Australia, the industry services company that resources WoodSolutions. “When correctly specified and applied, fire retardant
treatments can be used to improve the performance of wood products so that they can achieve Group 1 and Group 2 classifications.” Applying fire retardant treatments to wall and ceiling linings offers interior architects and designers a wider range of choices, especially when specifying wall and ceiling linings in multi-residential, commercial and educational projects.●

Designed to Satisfy Any Client’s Imagination We know that your kitchen & joinery projects demand solutions that are as unique and varied as your clients. No two projects are identical, and that’s why we have developed a versatile range that gives you the options and choice to deliver the perfect solution to your customer’s requirements. Whilst the Harn RITMA Cube drawer looks exceptional, we know that it’s what’s on the inside that really counts. Harn RITMA Cube has full extension synchronised roller bearing runners, a silent integrated soft closing cushioning system, plus an integrated lateral stabiliser bringing you a strong, smooth and stable drawer system. We believe in the quality of the Harn Ritma drawer, and we have backed this with our Lifetime Warranty. Now that’s confidence!
Features STABLE Anti-Skew Stability Mechanism The Anti-Skew feature is seamlessly incorporated in to the rear Harn RITMA Cube cabinet member. This feature ensures that the drawer doesn’t skew by using a system whereby a small roller runs along a guide keeping the drawer aligned in the initial stages of opening.
STRONG I-Beam The unique I-Beam is a proven strength of the Harn RITMA Cube Drawers. Not only does the I-Beam provide additional strength it also allows for the nests of roller bearings to have increased contact surface area between the separate parts of the cabinet member, ensuring a smoother and quieter sliding performance under full load.
SMOOTH Synchronised Runners The Synchronisation Mechanism is a new addition to the Harn RITMA Cube drawer cabinet member. It keeps the parts of the cabinet member running in perfect unison, ensuring an even and controlled closing motion. This is achieved through the use of a dual rack and pinion system cleverly integrated into the side of the cabinet member. Not only does the Harn RITMA Cube range incorporate a vast array of options to suit every joinery project, but these drawers are surprisingly good value, bringing the very best in softclose drawer systems to your clients at a price that will help you close the deal! ●

Exciting expansion plans for Weinig Australia at their Wetherill Park complex in Western Sydney.
Weinig Expansion Good News for Industry By John Halkett Exciting expansion plans are in progress for Weinig Australia at their Wetherill Park complex in Western Sydney. Although well advanced in more than doubling their office and showroom space plans are being carefully developed. Managing Director Neil Forbes says Weinig Australia is measured about its expansion plans for the future. “We have some planning yet to do to finalise the details. However, this expansion will provide us with valuable opportunities to showcase the full suite of both Weinig solid wood processing machines and Holzer panel processing machines to our customers and the industry more widely.” “We are enthusiastic about this opportunity. We are particularly pleased at being able to offer a complete spectrum of machines to the solid wood and to the cabinet making industries with our extensive range of German designed and 8 | SupplierMay/June 2018
manufactured Weinig and Holzher machines and equipment, plus our sales and technical backup support.” Neil says that this additional space together with our strengthened resources, will allow Weinig to more expansively display and showcase their complete range of Holzer CNC panel nesting, edgebanding and other machines. “We intend to press our foot even harder to the pedal in relation to our Weinig solid wood processing range of machines,” he says. “We know that Weinig has been an important part of solid wood processing in Australia for decades – from the sawmill through the dry mill and further value-added processing and we intend to reinforce this relationship.” Neil confirms that Weinig Australia appreciate that the timber industry is experiencing some significant changes, notably with apartments in major metropolitan areas now outnumbering detached houses, and new exciting domestic capacity to manufacture more
sophisticated engineered products like GLT and CLT coming on line. “This is particularly encouraging for the industry and Weinig is well positioned to support this pleasing effort critical to the future of building and construction activities across the country.” “We have plans in the pipe line for greater engagement with the industry at our expanded premises. Events to showcase our machinery with a German flavour are in the pipeline so stay tuned,” says Neil.
“We want to be deliberate and thorough, but believe we will also be in an unassailable position to offer solid timber and panel-based industries machinery, equipment and support right across the spectrum with our strengthened nationwide sales and service coverage.” Weinig Australia is part of the Worldwide Weinig Group, synonymous for providing solutions and the latest in technology to solid timber processors. Established in 1905, the Weinig Group is the world's largest manufacturer of machines and systems for solid wood processing. A number of individual specialised companies offer a range of products under the Weinig brand, covering the complete process chain from the raw material to the end product. Following the integration of the Holzher brand in 2010, the Weinig Group also offers innovative and future-proof solutions for processing wooden panels and other flat panel material. ●

AW I S A 2018
AWISA 2018, Sydney, Australia With a footprint the equivalent of a one kilometre length of 8 lane highway, AWISA 2018 will be the largest AWISA ever. The show is taking place from 4-7 July this year at the new, multi-level International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour, Sydney. AWISA 2018 uses 28,000 square metres of space at the ICC’s exhibition centre. The new venue is built on the site of the biennial AWISA exhibitions that took place at Darling Harbour from 1992 to 2012. “One of the reasons for the size of the show is the number of machinery suppliers who will be featuring the latest in panel storage and retrieval systems. Together, of course, with huge ranges of the latest in CNC equipment. But AWISA 2018 is not just the place for the large equipment from the major suppliers, but as always there will be those interesting exhibits on smaller stands with innovative new machines, software or hardware,” said Geoff Holland, general manager of the Australian Woodworking Industry Suppliers Association Ltd. “Not only is AWISA 2018 by far the biggest AWISA ever, the design of the new ICC Sydney Exhibition Centre makes it unusual for an Australian trade show. The ICC is the first major exhibition centre in Australia to be built over two exhibition floors. AWISA Wood & Panel Processing is on one level and AWISA-Design on the level above. All linked by stairs, escalators and elevators.” AWISA is the mustsee event for everyone in woodworking and associated industries and professions. Furniture manufacturers, cabinet makers, kitchen manufacturers, joinery manufacturers, architects, designers, shop and office fitters, builders, and other wood, timber, panel, 10 | SupplierMay/June 2018
aluminium, plastic, stone and glass processing industries are welcome to attend. The social side of AWISA exhibitions is also important. The show provides the chance to catch up with colleagues in the industry either on the floor of the show, or at one of the many supplier/customer events that take place each evening.
ADMISSION AND REGISTRATION Admission is free. AWISA 2018 is a trade-only exhibition. All visitors are asked to register. Visitors can register at the counters in the foyer prior to admission, but is it preferred that they pre-register. Pre-registrations can only be made through the AWISA website, www. awisa.com.
ACCOMMODATION AND AFTER HOURS There are over 50 hotels within two kilometres of the venue - in the Darling Harbour and Pyrmont area immediately adjacent to the International Convention Centre (ICC), and in the Sydney CBD. Special rates have been negotiated at a number of these hotels. Visitors are recommended to book early as this will give them a greater choice of room and hotel. The Lido Group has been appointed to handle visitors’ accommodation. To book visit www.awisa.com/hotels. For
air travel contact your favourite airline or travel agent.
AIRPORT SHUTTLE BUSES A fleet of 48 seat coaches will provide a complimentary shuttle service between the two domestic terminals and AWISA 2018, with the service running every half hour from 8.00am each show day, with the last service leaving the exhibition one hour after the close of the show each day. On arrival at Sydney airport go to the baggage claim area in either domestic terminal and look for the bus company representative with the AWISA sign, or go to the Qantas group coach bays to the east of the Qantas terminal, T3. Qantas passengers should exit the Qantas terminal ground floor and turn left. Virgin, Jetstar and other T2 passengers should exit the T2 terminal ground floor, walk along the pedestrian footpath through the ground floor of the car park to the Qantas terminal, then head right to the Qantas group coach bays. Look for the bus with the AWISA sign. International visitors can connect to the AWISA shuttle by taking the airport shuttle to the domestic terminals. At the venue the passenger drop-off and pick-up point will be at the bus stop in Iron Wharf Place, north end of ICC Sydney Convention centre, near Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour.

Brett Ambrose, Chairman of the AWISA Association
I’ve been chairman of the AWISA Association since 2013. The role is the same as for any company or association chairman. To chair meetings and to lead the board in its role as the overseer of all AWISA activities, ensuring the organisational and financial success of the association. One of the great strengths of AWISA is that we have always had a strong board made up of CEO’s of member companies. I guess it could be said that I remain chairman “at the pleasure of the board”. What I mean by that is that the chairman is appointed by the board from among the directors, not by all association members at an AGM. Of course the directors are chosen by all members at AGMs.” The role is not an onerous one. Geoff Holland is the 12 | SupplierMay/June 2018
AWISA General Manager and as such does all the day to day running of the AWISA organisation. Geoff has been ensuring a successful and smooth running AWISA show since the late 1980’s. The board advises Geoff where required but relies on his experience and knowledge of the exhibition industry to ensure a successful AWISA show year after year. I have known Geoff professionally for nearly 30 years and have
come to trust his judgement and experience in matters related to the organisation or the organising of the show. As representatives of exhibitors the Chairman or the members of the board tend to be very much caught up in the bustle of their own stands … so the board roles take a lower profile. The shows exhibitors contain many members that have been involved in multiple AWISA shows over the years. Thus, it creates a
great space to meet up with industry colleagues and discuss informally what is required to help our industry and ensure its future. This years show is located in the new Sydney ICC (International Convention Centre) and whilst it provided the challenge of a two- level event it meant we can truly separate machinery and design. It’s almost a coming of age for the show and is on a par for any similar show around the world.●

AWISA DESIGN, according to Urban Republic, is also a great opportunity to showcase products to the whole industry. Airtight Solutions Launch New Waste Burning/Heat Plant Packages Burn MDF, timber and melamine board cleanly – an Australian first. In response to the ever increasing cost of waste disposal faced by our clients, Airtight and its group of associated engineering companies, has developed an energy recovery plant. This plant is capable of burning timber, MDF and particle board cleanly, an Australian first. The Airtight engineering group have supplied a large number of these units for use
with lignite, coal and wood fuels. Originally developed for coal and lignite fuels the design was modified for the use with wood fuels. It has been in successful use on wood fuels in NZ for over 15 years. The design has now been refined to meet the requirements of the Australian market and its particular EPA guidelines. The heat plant uses an under feed stoker, which, coupled with independent underfire, overfire and induced draft fans, allow us to control the fire accurately and thus ensure we get a clean burn.
The flue gases are cleaned by a grit arrestor before passing through the induced draft fan to the stack. Stack particulate emissions are less than 100mg/Nm3, a commonly accepted EPA guideline for boiler stack emissions. Airtight Solutions General Manager, Stig Brixen said: “We have commissioned these systems in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. Recently commissioned installations have proved efficient and viable and have been well received by our clients. A medium sized
manufacturer with a high waste load bill can achieve very attractive returns on investment. This is particular the case where the client has a need for the process heating, i.e. the energy recovered, for e.g. factory heating, heated spray booths/lines, presses etc.” Airtight’s standard series of heat plants range from 350kW to 3MW plants, effectively covering medium to large scale manufacturers, producing 7-85m2 of dust/ chips per day. Leitz at AWISA 2018 Solutions in New Dimensions Leitz will be exhibiting at the AWISA Exhibition with the motto "Solutions in new dimensions" and will present future service concepts and innovations from the world market leader from Germany, for the woodworking and wood-processing industries. With its claim to set trends through innovative thinking and advanced technology, Leitz will be presenting solutions and concepts at its stand that not only consider technical progress, but also focus primarily on the added value for users and customers. With the "Solutions in new dimensions", production 32 | SupplierMay/June 2018
processes are not only made more efficient, flexible and economical. With these solutions, Leitz guarantees perfect machining quality, maximum productivity and sustainability at the highest technical level.
Tool highlights for more economy, sustainability, efficiency and productivity Undisputed at the centre of the tool presentation is ProfilCut Q. In the premium version, this profile tool system is approved for cutting speeds of up to 120 meters per second. As a pioneer, the new ProfilCut Q Diamond quick-change cutterhead system sets new standards in machining operation. The unique combination of ultralight aluminum tool body and resharpenable, constant diameter diamond
knives guarantees maximal productivity and considerably higher efficiency. Leitz panel sizing saw blades are another tool highlight at AWISA 2018. Longer tool life, laser ornaments for more damping will shortly describe the new features of this tool program, which has been developed further in order to meet today's customer requirements in terms of economy and efficiency at all times. In addition, Leitz presents its top products in the field of high performance saw blades. With BrillianceCut, transparent plastics can be processed in mark-free finish cut quality so that a complete operation can be saved in the subsequent machining process. A prime example of how quality and efficiency merge into
greater cost-effectiveness in plastics processing. With the WhisperCut saw blade, Leitz proves that sustainability and productivity in sawing are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Due to the extreme noise reduction and the universal suitability for a wide range of materials, the design in standard cutting width, this saw blade is not only particularly user-friendly and versatile with a patented tooth pitch which achieves a significant reduction of cutting and feed forces. The innovations of recent years show impressively how Leitz has continually set the benchmark for new, future oriented technologies and products in the industry. Leitz will once again be demonstrating its innovative strength at the AWISA 2018. â—? www.suppliermagazine.com.au

ADVERTORIAL
y t i l a u t Q n o g r f n i e r o F Bring e h t o t y r e n Machi Ausmach are the leading Australian-born product and service providers redefining national supplier standards. As Ford said, “quality means doing it right when no one is looking.” And when no one was looking, Ausmach were researching, innovating and creating products and services with quality at the forefront of their endeavours, now – the spotlight is on! Ausmach are not just another supplier. The concept of dropping a machine on a buyer’s doorstep, taking their cash and running is outdated and unproductive. Rather, Ausmach knows that by putting their clients first and supporting their success they will invigorate the industry and drive mutual success.
Supplying OTT Paul Edgebanders to the Australasian market was a no-brainer. Their success in Europe and patented second-to-none CombiMelt system at the heart of every machine is exactly the innovation and quality Australasian manufacturers are demanding. While Casadei Industria shares Ausmach’s commitment to research and their machines offer the versatility and flexibility manufacturers need to customise a machine to suit them. Mayer Beam Saws provide an opening for those entering the industry to deck themselves out with reliable, quality and efficient machinery that is affordable.
To do this, Ausmach assembled the best manufacturing experts from all corners of the industry; from factory floors, computer programming, customer services and engineering. They put together a team that has decades of experience but also the passion and values to be leaders that take the industry into an active, sustainable and profitable future.
To support an advanced range of products, Ausmach provides unparalleled customer services, offering a catalogue of over 50, 000 spare parts with an unprecedented rate of next-day delivery, from coastto-coast. As well as this, Ausmach experts are professional maintenance and service providers, helping to optimise your operations and increase productivity. To support your success, Ausmach knows that the highest level of customer service is essential.
The team then spent years travelling the globe to meet other industry experts to gather data on everything manufacturing. This devotion to research means that Ausmach is equipped with the knowledge and the international community to provide only the best and most relevant products and services.
Ausmach are immersed in the Australasian manufacturing industry through generations of passion and experience. Machinery needs to cater to everything from local trends to environment and industry professionals need a partner who will support them. European experience helps to invigorate the industry,
1300 072 403 a u s m a c h . co m . a u but their products need to be adapted to be accessible and relevant for Australasia’s unique needs, to satisfy customers and compliment Australasia’s culture. And there’s no one better positioned to do that than an Australian company. This devotion to local success prompted the development of WOODPLUS, the accumulation of Ausmach’s expertise, European engineering and German design in the form of a CNC machine that would service the future of the manufacturing industry. WOODPLUS products are made with the highest quality parts that meet the demands of an established factory and are equipped with an affordable price tag that is accessible to those setting up for the first time. The success of the CNC Machine is such that WOODPLUS have introduced an entire range of machinery, with tools in development, particularly engineered for Australasian manufacturers. As Ausmach takes centre stage as a leader in Australasia’s manufacturing industry, they commit to providing the best products and ongoing services that are innovative, sustainable and relevant. Ausmach is dedicated to industry growth and embraces the evolutions the future offers. They’ll continue to do it right and we dare say you won’t be able to tear your eyes away!

AWISA Gold Star Awards Every AWISA, Elite Publishing (Supplier magazine) presents its Gold Star awards for products that demonstrate excellence in innovation and value to the wood and allied manufacturing sector. It could be a new product, system, process or new development in an existing technology. The award is presented to AWISA exhibitors only. Any technology innovation presented at AWISA that in the opinion of the judges meets the criteria, qualifies for an award. While not all products go on to wide use, they all represent innovations that add to the collective knowledge of the Industry. The criteria for the award is that the product could be any exhibited at AWISA but the product must be exhibited at AWISA in the year it's bestowed. It could be a new product or a product that has undergone recent significant development or improvement. The product must be original or a major development of an original idea produced by that Company. The product could build on an existing technology (such as a cabinet hinge) but the product must exhibit significant original development. The product must move the industry forward through innovation. As an example; the zero edgebanding technology was originally applied with either plasma or laser to activate the functional layer of fusion edge tape. Hot air fusion of the edge tape was an original and alternate development of the laser edge technology and was awarded a Gold Star in 2012 (Beyond Tools). In 2014 Holz-Her developed technology to apply the edge through near-infra red radiation and won a Gold Star in that year for again, developing an original and alternate development of the same theme. Suitable products are identified through literature or press releases in the 12-months leading up to AWISA. Products displayed at AWISA are examined by Supplier's editorial staff with up over 40 years’ experience in the industry. A brief is presented to the publisher highlighting the innovation and value to the industry. Usually, four persons will authorise each award. 36 | SupplierMay/June 2018
Previous Gold Star winners Previous AWISA's Gold Star awards were won by the Altendorf2 and while this did not go on to the great things expected by Altendorf, it demonstrated a new approach to panel cutting that was unique. Altendorf also won for their F45 ELMO III D Panel Saw; a new development with synchronous motor and double tilt. An award was presented to Wood Tech Group for the Anderson Cojet 2612 printing machine, a new product of benefit to the furnishing industry. An award was presented to Beyond Tools for their fusion edge technology. Originally developed by Schugoma, ‘Beyond Tools’ presented the first machine with this technology. An award was presented to Gabbett Machinery (now SCM Group Australia) who won for their SCM Accord 30 fx 5-Axis Machine that provided 5-axis machining at a much reduced price. An award was presented to Woodtron for the Cube panel warehouse system that provided an original solution for automated warehousing at a fraction of the cost of other systems. An award was presented to Biesse Group for the Viet Opera R robotic sander that provided a through-feed solution to replicate artisan skills in free-form components. An award was presented to Weinig Group for their innovative Cube through-feed planer that has gone on to be very popular with timber merchants who once had to use two machines to complete a labour and time intensive task. Weinig Group also won for the development of PUR glue into their Holz-Her cartridge system that saved thousands of dollars in nitrogen cooling equipment. A third award went to Weinig Group for the Holz-Her LTRONIC glue system for zero-join edges that provided an original alternative to the hot air system of applying fusion edge tape. Weinig Group’s fourth Gold Star Award was presented to HolzHer for the Multi-Function tool (developed in conjunction with Leitz tooling) providing automatic changes to shaping cutters and scrapers.
In hardware and materials, an award was presented to Hettich for the ArciTech drawer system that took advantage of new design trends in the kitchen cabinet sector. Hettich Australia also won with the Sensys 165 degree hinge, the first of its kind. An award was presented to Nover for the Fenix Nano Technology material that was a breakaway technological development in new and innovative materials. An award was presented to Titus Tekform for the Titusonic Ultrasound fastening that uses sonic rivets to replace traditional wooden dowels. In the area of tooling, an award was presented to AKE Australia for their SuperSilent saw-blade that reduced noise while cutting sheet materials. An award was presented to Leuco for their Aerotech CNC router chuck system; an original and clever development to remove dust while CNC machining (mainly) panel materials. Honourable mentions also went to companies over the years for developments that were not original or a significant development, but variations and improvements that were seen to be of benefit to the Australian furniture industries. The Gold Star Awards will again be presented after AWISA in Sydney. ●

Kitchen Innovations, Australian Dust Control – a Great Partnership KI in Melbourne is a market leader in the manufacture of quality kitchens & continues to experience unprecedented growth in sales & production. Their acquisition of an additional site & expansion of their manufacturing process incorporated the installation of a new ‘state of the art’ automated process. ADC has had a long standing relationship with KI over many years providing their dust extraction solutions to all their relocations. Their most recent project incorporated a fully automated process comprising Biesse CNC machines, twin beam saw, edgebander & drill. Giulio Marsili, managing director commissioned ADC to design, manufacture & install a complete ‘turnkey’ dust extraction system. The model is an ADC, AKF7, “ATEX
Certified” chain filter. The ATEX certification complies with the rigid European industry requirements, regarding explosion proofing dust extraction equipment. The airflow of the system is 60,000m3/hr , using a 90kw extraction fan. The design includes the energy efficient VSD , variable speed drive. & differential pressure transducer to automatically controls fan speed, so suction levels are constant as control dampers open & close. This in turn generates significant savings in energy bills. On average, you can save the cost of the VSD installation in just over 12 months. Note, the savings continue into the future paying off the complete dust extraction system. The waste discharges directly into KI’s waste bin, but the system allows for future connection of a “waste to
energy” installation, that involves a boiler & a possible generator. This will eliminate landfill costs & dramatically reduce heating costs within the production process. Being able to tailor a design to meet individual needs of each customer is a key factor in the success of ADC. Meet the team at AWISA 2018. Stands #1853 & 1854. ●

SOPHIA - the New Reality of Understanding from Biesse Introducing Biesse‘s SOPHIA project, a rapidly evolving and substantial artificial intelligence platform. The platform is enriched with a range of new features that enhance interaction. Now customers have access to a whole host of services that simplify work management and improve the productivity of their machines and systems. Since the launch of Biesse’s SOPHIA project in Europe, connected machines have registered a 60% growth in productivity and the platform has highlighted that Biesse has handled more than 2,000,000 events of various types. “The results registered over these first few months demonstrate how the services we offer our customers help increase the operating time of a machine and promote a proactive approach by reducing diagnostic times by 80%,” states Stefano Calestani, the Group's new Service Innovation Director. “It may have only been on the market a short while but SOPHIA is improving the quality of relations with customers who have benefited from using the tool. It is a quick and decisive support, which minimises waiting 40 | SupplierMay/June 2018
times previously required to deal with problems, and responds with effective and immediate solutions. This is the substantial opportunity Sophia offers our customers" Calestani continues.
WHAT IS SOPHIA? SOPHIA is a digital platform that provides users with access to more machine information and initiates concrete actions to optimise performance and monitor the quality of the work produced, anticipating the causes of faults and providing clear solutions to resolve any anomalies. The data gathered and analysed by artificial intelligence is transformed into useful data to help optimise customer production and product quality, providing extremely valuable opportunities for growth. This information also provides customers with tools to prevent problems that could damage production. Thanks to SOPHIA, Biesse can take proactive steps to contact customers, reducing machine stoppages and inefficient time-wasting.
GREATER SECURITY The flow of data is developed solely by the machine to network, never the
other way around. The security of the information collected is guaranteed by two different systems: • https communication protocol, namely a protocol for secure communication over a network via an encrypted connection; • access to the cloud with two factor authentication (token + password).
WORLDWIDE COVER Biesse's entire global service network is interconnected and has access to the SOPHIA web portal, ensuring customers all over the world receive quick and decisive responses and solutions. Through this tool Biesse technicians are able to constantly monitor possible problems, generating in real-time the solutions required to solve them.
QUICK PROGRAM INSTALLATION Distribution of the SOPHIA loT SOFTWARE is extremely straightforward and rapid. It takes place through a dedicated function on the app, called Software Distribution Manager, which, through a protected mode, directly sends the specific software package to the machine. www.suppliermagazine.com.au
NEW FUNCTIONS The platform consists of two powerful areas: IoT and Parts, integrated with each other. These are connected to two apps that provide customers with easy access to Sophia's capabilities. The IoT - SOPHIA app provides a comprehensive overview of the specific machine performance features, with remote diagnostics, machine stoppage analysis and fault prevention. The service also provides a continuous connection with the Biesse control centre, the option of calling for assistance from within the customer app with reports of issues managed as a priority. Xylexpo will bear witness to the new features of the IoT – SOPHIA app, which will greatly improve personalised INTERACTION with the customer depending on machine operation and will SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE SERVICE TIMES. • Through the app, users will be able to receive notifications regarding production status, machine stoppages, production progress, maintenance alarms, logistics and tending direct to their mobile phone. Customers will always have access to information, wherever they are, even if the machine is not in operation. • An important supplementary feature of the app is the addition of new indicators, whether they are the same for all different types of machines or specific to the type of work. The first version of the app introduced three important indicators related to productivity: Availability, efficiency and effectiveness. The new version of the app will allow users to see new settings specific to the type of work, namely between the many on offer, for beading machines the number of steps or information on the type of glue used, or for CNC machining centres the effect of tool changing or use of the working area, etc. This feature is of great value to the customer, who, up until now, have never had access to easily traceable information and therefore specifics regarding their own production. • If required, via their mobile, customers can create a video connection that will allow the Biesse service to see what the customer outlines, therefore facilitating communication. www.suppliermagazine.com.au
• It will also be possible to facilitate required maintenance operations by automatically compiling a shopping cart filled with spare parts considered to be necessary to carry out operations, then monitor the status of the machine components and receive notifications when work is required, for example when a part deteriorates. The customer can choose whether to confirm the order or not. The second area of SOPHIA is PARTS, the new easy, intuitive and personalised tool for ordering Biesse and Intermac spare parts. The portal provides customers, dealers and branches with the opportunity to navigate within regularly updated documentation relating to their own machines and carry out interactive research within machine designs, documentation and bill of materials. It also allows customers to directly create a spare parts cart with information on real-time warehouse availability of parts and the corresponding price list, to monitor the progress of orders and provide a list of emergency and recommended spare parts. PARTS - SOPHIA, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, is a multi-lingual and multi-platform tool integrated with leading operating systems, specifically iOS and Android, and is also available via a dedicated smartphone or tablet app. The new features presented at Xylexpo will include new features that will further integrate the PARTS SOPHIA app with the lo-T - SOPHIA app: • The automatic creation of a spare parts cart following a loT maintenance task. • The opening of a technical assistance request using the portal or the PARTS SOPHIA app. • The ability to see and use a machine's technical documents on both the app and the platform.
SOPHIA IN THE PRESENT AND IN THE FUTURE SOPHIA IoT was first conceived in April 2016, as part of a pilot project based on the concept of connecting a sample of some of the
main machines from the Rover range used by customers. This connection was then implemented on other types of machine, and will cover the entire Biesse (wood and advanced materials) and Intermac range by the end of 2018. To date, loT SOPHIA is available in Europe, America and Canada, and by the end of 2018 the platform will be worldwide. The PARTS SOPHIA portal was conceived at the start of 2016 and made available to branches and dealers in August 2017. It is now available in major languages and for the majority of machines produced by Biesse and Intermac. August 2017 saw the launch of the app linked to the portal, which is now used by all dealers and branches and available to all customers. “Sophia is a constantly changing world that integrates the experience of Biesse customers from around the world and involves them in the process of creating new services. Biesse strongly believes in this project and has made provisions for solid investment over the course of next three years. The team dedicated to the project has significantly grown in the past few months and is set to increase with resources distributed worldwide. By the end of 2018 the platform will have been implemented worldwide, in accordance with the development schedule set out,” states Federico Broccoli, Wood Division Director/ Sales - Subsidiaries Division Director. “We are drawing increasingly close to our customers in order to accompany them in a process of growth that determines an optimization of all main assets, be they technological, strategic, organisational and human”, concludes Broccoli. Customers from various sectors worldwide can learn first-hand the benefits that the platform provides by visiting the company's stands at the many trade fairs Biesse takes part in and Biesse showrooms worldwide. By May there will also a be a site dedicated to SOPHIA where users will be able to find all the information on the new platform. To better understand the features of the platform there are also several videos available on Biesse's YouTube channel. ● SupplierMay/June 2018 | 41

New from Hettich Designed for individuals Distinctive designer profiles for Hettich drawer systems Hettich’s new designer profiles for ArciTech and InnoTech Atira drawers give furniture manufacturers a simple, cost-effective way to meet differing consumer demands and expectations. With the platform concepts from Hettich, furniture manufacturers are not tied to any specific furniture segment by choosing a particular drawer system. The decorative, self-adhesive designer profiles in attractive finishes create visual highlights with an individual touch: timeless stainless steel, chrome or aluminum looks give the drawer a particular aura of elegance and quality. Oak and walnut looks pick up on the trend towards more natural authenticity. Here, the combinations are equally as varied as consumer demands and expectations. Whether in the living room, bedroom, kitchen or contract segment – the high-quality mix of different materials and decorative designer profiles makes an impressive statement.

and more furniture fronts are featuring dark wood decors. Alongside this, a whole palette of earthy colours has been rediscovered. This trend towards natural authenticity and harmony comes from a rediscovery of the home that promises a sense of well-being and security. On furniture made with these dark timbers and exquisite surfaces, a hinge needs to blend into background where it remains unnoticed – in a similar way to creatures that mimic their surroundings and fade in with them to create a harmonious unit. Hettich has applied this intelligent principle of nature to furniture design with the Sensys hinge in obsidian black: in the form of perfectly performing fitting systems that inconspicuously blend into the design of furniture. The Sensys range in obsidian black features hinges and mounting plates for all common mounting situations. Hettich’s award-winning range of soft-close Sensys hinges offer are the perfect addition to any storage project, with Sensys hinges available for all main door mounting options, and capable of soft closing a door from an angle of 35 degrees. The award winning European designed Sensys hinge systems are manufactured with the highest quality materials to the exacting standards for which German manufacturers are renowned.
Scope for new ideas – SlideLine M sliding door fitting from Hettich The SlideLine M sliding door fitting from Hettich is a system for many applications. Merging into the background, it doesn't interfere with the design of furniture and gives sliding door elements a look of elegance. As a 1-track overlay option, SlideLine M is opening up more and more perspectives in kitchen shelf systems and living room storage units: doors that slide back and 44 | SupplierMay/June 2018
forth produce a fascinating interplay between open and closed segments in furniture. Projecting by just 8 mm, the profile keeps sliding doors close to the carcase, guaran-teeing minimal gaps at either side. Two doors can cross each other in just one profile. Various profile sets in profile heights of 16, 18 and 25 mm provide close hugging solutions. And the decorative profile in silver, white, black or champagne elegantly blends into the design of furniture. Furniture can be closed off completely with SlideLine M in the 2-track inset version. Whether in the form of kitchen wall unit, as a clever midway solution, or children's bedroom furniture, 2 or 3-door units can be created with incredible ease. The runner and guide profiles can be installed on different carcase and worktop materials as they can either be screwed on, stuck on or groove mounted. Whether 1-track overlay or 2-track inset - the level of convenience
remains the same. Perfectly soft stopped sliding doors underscore the quality of furniture. Silent System is discreetly integrated on the running component and moves doors quietly and gently in opening and closing direction. Where several sliding doors run in one profile, soft colliding slows them down as they move towards each other. SlideLine M is suitable for all common furniture de-signs and doors made of wood, glass or aluminium weighing up to 30 kg. It is installed quickly and easily on the assembled carcase. Tipmatic Soft-Close by Grass Convenient opening and closing now has a new name: Tipmatic Soft-close Easy operation and style are features that customers appreciate when buying furniture. Neither is always immediately visible from the outside of a kitchen, and the concealed movement systems can be a real experience in everyday use. The GRASS range now features a new highlight for kitchens, bathrooms and living areas: Tipmatic Soft-close, a system that perfectly combines two popular comfort aspects. From the outside, only a sleek surface is visible. Completely handle-free. Slight pressure is all that is needed to open the drawer. It is also gently closed with a familiar movement without any sudden braking. With these features, the new GRASS opening system provides access to a new dimension in comfort. Tipmatic Soft-close combines two familiar functions: the mechanical opening of handle-free fronts (Tipmatic) plus the elegant,

damped closure of the drawer (Soft-close). Another noteworthy advantage: Tipmatic Soft-close can be easily retrofitted on the Nova Pro and Dynapro slide systems. When Tipmatic Soft-close is installed, the size and weight of the drawer are of virtually no consequence. With the integrated three-level adjustment of the opening force, one ejector unit is sufficient for all weight categories and nominal lengths. The opening force can also be subsequently modified to suit the weight of the drawer. The large activation zone also ensures optimum ease of operation. Tipmatic Soft-close offers yet another functional advantage with its small minimum front gap of 2.5 millimetres and the integrated, tool-free depth adjustment. "With Tipmatic Soft-close, we once more do justice to our high quality and comfort aspirations," comments GRASS board member Thomas MĂźller. "It is important for us that we focus on both target groups: processors, who are looking for flexible and simple installation, and users, who appreciate that our movement systems make everyday life easier. Both these benefits are perfectly incorporated into our new product." Visit Grass Australia/NZ at AWISA, stand 4623. â—?

Intermac, the inside story Technology editor Phil Ashley recently visited Intermac in Pesaro, Italy to take a look at how its quality machines are built. Back in 1987, Intermac was set up as a branch of the wood working machine company of Biesse. Initially producing only glass processing machinery for seven years, Intermac ventured into stone processing machinery with enormous success. It seems fitting that Italy; where citystates such as Florence erected great stone structures such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Laurentian library, would produce some of the finest CNC stone processing machines today. Biesse’s first foray into other materials processing was the Master Glass for the automatic CNC shaped scoring of glass. The Master Edge for the CNC machining of edges of straight and curved glass panels followed in 1990. Master Stone was created in 1994, Intermac’s first CNC for stone machining. Intermac inherited the technology of the Pesaro-based company that had become one of the market leaders in high technology processing of wood and it remains at the forefront of advanced materials processing technology. The similarities of the processing needs for glass and stone meant that for the stone industry, the new machines were ideally suited to a product that until this time was mainly based on traditional stone craftsmanship. Now, homeowners can benefit from technology that brings the beauty and durability of designer-benchtops within reach of their budgets. 46 | SupplierMay/June 2018
Director Gianluigi Casadio said, “I can’t help thinking of the Master which has always been synonymous with machining throughout the world. The association is solid and undisputed, and that’s something we’re proud of. “When Intermac designed and developed the first machining centres, it introduced innovation and technology to a world that still did things manually. This insight made us true leaders and over these years we have been able to maintain that position. But we don’t want our past success to limit us. We know that companies that innovate,
market leaders can go one of two ways. They can either remain leaders or sit and wait for someone to outdo them. We certainly don’t plan to sit and wait; we want to be sure that other models like the Primus waterjet or the Vertmax vertical glass processing machines will be associated by everyone with the technology they use.” The production in Pesaro has been based on the Kaisen continuous improvement manufacturing system for five years. The system guarantees a consistency of quality that is essential to a company that manufactures for the world market. In fact, there are 160 checks made on each machine during the assembly stage. Several different models of machine can be manufactured on the same assembly line. Due to increased sales, it has been split into two lines. The company manufactures between 12 and 15 machines every week but interestingly 80% of its fabrication is production cells of two or more machines with some form of materials transfer and handling. Most machines are different and built to satisfy the unique needs of the customer. In many cases an acceptance test is required before the machine even leaves the factory. Like all modern manufacturing of major machines, sub-assemblies are

built to a very exact timing method called takt time. Takt comes from the German word, taktzeit or clock interval, and each stage is carefully planned so that the sub-assembly arrives at the machine in the correct order and at the exact time. Takt time is not the time it takes to make a product but refers to the rate of production needed for meeting customer demand, a different thing altogether. The work required to assemble a subassembly is also carefully considered so that mistakes can be eliminated and new workers can be trained quickly. At Intermac, every machine on the

production line is different but its logistics are advanced and can accommodate a wide range of variations of the product. Many people refer to quality but the real question is, “Is it fit for purpose?” or, “Will it do what it was intended to?” To ensure that every machine will do what the customer expects, the parts are continually tested during the entire manufacture of the machine. Because of this, the electrical cabinet is installed as early as possible and as
every cabinet is designed for a specific machine it carries the same serial number as the machine it was designed for. After the machine is built, it goes through two days of additional trials before it is disassembled for packaging and transport to local and international customers. To further ensure that all the parts on every machine are the quality needed for continuous machine operation, only limited numbers of parts are kept in stock

with deliveries. In some cases, this could be every day. Defective parts are identified early and replacements can be resupplied in a very short time. Intermac’s production has total control over the end product. Director Franco Angelotti said, “Our customers need to produce more at lower costs and keeping the process in check. In an increasingly competitive world, where margins keep getting tighter, having control becomes a crucial part of staying competitive. “The needs that have become standard are having machines integrated one with the other, having machines communicate with the management system, reporting on the flow. Other advantages that come with integration include diagnostics to correct interruptions and being able to spot and correct problems quickly. The priority mission these days is improving efficiency and having control over the production process.” Intermac produce an extensive range of equipment for processing materials. Machines include the Primus waterjet cutting machines for laminated and monolithic glass, marble, granite and engineered stone; the Master series for stone and glass processing; and the Vertmax for vertical processing of glass. It is supported by the Donatoni range of bridge saws and a complete range of processing tools from

Diamut. With so much at stake, it is important that the customer trusts that the machine will do exactly what was promised.
Director Gianluigi Casadio said, “I can tell you how we try to maintain trust: by being consistent and knowing how to listen. We’re consistent in providing the specifications our customers expect, but we also know how to listen to their changing needs. The market changes all the time and businesses can no longer simply respond to expectations. We need to interpret, always thinking ahead and putting oneself in the customer’s shoes. A machine that doesn’t work well, or doesn’t do what is expected of it, hampers the customer’s work as well. That’s a risk we’re not willing to take”. By launching the next generation of Master machining centres, Intermac aims to reaffirm and consolidate its leadership in the machining of glass, stone and metal for years to come. It’s a leadership entrenched in the company’s ongoing drive for innovation and solutions that can meet the needs that come with the new manufacturing philosophy that is Industry 4.0.●

Vacuum Pumps in the Woodworking Industry: Choosing Correctly Vacuum pumps can be found in many applications within a woodworking factory. They are connected to the CNC router tables providing suction to hold down the workpieces on the nested CNC bed. They can be found on the large overhead automated cranes or the smaller manually controlled and hand manoeuvred vacuum lifters. These use suction to lift sheets of wood onto the table and other heavy items within the factory. They are also used in pressing and veneering to remove the air molecules from a closed vacuum bag. Vacuum pumps are, for want of a better explanation, an air compressor that runs in reverse to utilise the inlet to be used for suction purposes and the outlet used as an exhaust. Although compressors can be used to create a vacuum using venturi suction, they will cost you almost twice as much to run versus a vacuum pump that is designed specifically to produce suction. There are four important things you need to know about a vacuum pump: • The application is the most important aspect of pump selection; • Maximum vacuum pressure that the vacuum pump can produce; • The rate at which it moves air (air flow); and • The size of the motor, the power it takes to achieve the desired pressure and flows for that specific pump, and the efficiency of that motor selected on that pump.
job you need it to. The type of pump you need, be it an oil-free rotary vane, an oil-lubricated rotary vane, a side channel or a liquid ring style vacuum pump is determined by how you are going to use it. From there, the next three items will determine the size of the pump that you need. The application is the driving factor between the next two important aspects of pump selection; the ultimate pressure of the pump, and the flow rate or pumping speed. Unfortunately, these data points are often insufficient for determining whether a vacuum pump is appropriate for any application or for comparing the relative performance of two vacuum pumps. This is because ultimate vacuum and flow rate are merely endpoints on a curve, and reflect a pump’s capabilities under conditions that are not representative of the pump in actual use. Therefore, when possible, knowing the required flow rate at the required vacuum pressure is paramount to choosing the right pump, and when this information is not known, this is when you are best to turn to an expert in the field of vacuum.
Something else that needs to be taken into consideration when choosing a pump is that there are pumps that will be able to do the job you need it to do, but they will not be the best pump for your application. For an example, oil-lubricated rotary vane pumps are best for when you need a higher vacuum pressure. If you are to use them in applications that require a rough to mid-range pressure, these pumps will have an excessive oil carryover allowing oil into the atmosphere via the exhaust and placing excessive load on the oil separators.
Maximum or Ultimate Vacuum (Pressure) When it comes to choosing the right vacuum pump for the job, having a vacuum pump that can achieve 99% vacuum may not be necessary as the flow rate may be more important for the job that you need the vacuum pump to do. There are vacuum pumps that have high vacuum pressures and can be supplied in a compact size with a low flow rate. These pumps are used in applications where high pressure is 58 required but the time in which to

As the vacuum pressure increases, the air flow decreases. Therefore, a pump that is rated at 140 m3/h at open flow (sucking in free air) will produce an air flow rate that is much less when it is creating a vacuum with the air flow rate getting to almost nonexistent once the pump has achieved its ultimate pressure. When the vacuum pump gets to a state where there is no longer any flow going through the pump, this is called deadheading. Dead-heading a vacuum pump is not a good idea as the air flow coming onto the pump helps keep the pump cooled down. When there is no air flow, the pump can overheat. In the woodworking industry vacuum pumps will generally not dead-head as they are used in a way where flow will always be part of the application. In some applications however, such as in the case of vacuum lifting a non-porous item or doing vacuum bagging where the process is a closed environment, the pump will need to have a vacuum relief valve fitted to bleed in some air. Many manufacturers of vacuum pumps include a vacuum relief valve as part of the pump. Graph 1 shows five different pumps, all achieving a nominated working pressure of -37kPa and a flow requirement of 70m3/h.
Motor Size - Power Requirements
achieve the ultimate pressure is not time critical. Some pumps have higher flow rates but their ultimate pressure is only half a Bar or less. In some applications, the ultimate pressure is not as important as the flow.
Flow Rate or Pumping Speed Manufacturers of vacuum pumps generally include the nominal flow of the pump in the model number. The 58 | SupplierMay/June 2018
nominal flow air rate is how much air the vacuum pump can move from the inlet to the outlet side when both sides are of equal pressure; that is, not connected to a workpiece and sucking in and blowing out free air. The flow rate of the vacuum pump at its inlet is shown as a volume relative to a unit of time. Common units that are shown are metres cubed per hour (m3/h), cubic feet per minute (cfm), and litres per minute (L/min).
As mentioned earlier, vacuum pumps use relatively little power compared to compressed air driven venturi suction. Although this is the case across the board with the diverse types of vacuum pumps, the pump that you may be using on your woodwork machinery may be using more power than it has to in order to achieve what you need the pump to achieve. Thinking about the previous two items that are important when considering the size of a vacuum pump, we mentioned that a vacuum pump has an ultimate pressure as well as an open flow. In reality, a pump should be sized and the type of vacuum pump should be chosen based on the actual working pressure and the required flow at that working pressure. If the required working pressure was 60 -37 kPa and the minimum flow www.suppliermagazine.com.au

rate required at that working pressure was 70m3/h, this can be achieved by quite a few styles of vacuum pumps, with power requirements ranging from 3.07 kW up to 3.75kW. Graph 2 shows the five different pumps from the previous graph and the shaft power at the working pressure of -37kPa. As you can see, having a more powerful motor may not have any real benefit to what you are trying to achieve, and it could cost you more in the long run. A way to keep the running costs down on a vacuum pump is to have a variable speed drive. The power savings is totally dependent on your application; therefore, it is not always going to be beneficial to use one, but where and when you can use one, the power savings will often pay off in a relatively short time. 60 | SupplierMay/June 2018
Vacuum Pumps at AWISA 2018 Vacuum pumps will have a strong showing at AWISA 2018, with energy savings, ease of maintenance and noise reduction being key features to look out for. When you are looking at acquiring a new vacuum pump to either replace an existing pump, or to increase the performance of your existing machinery, there are many things that you need to consider, and using the four factors previously mentioned about vacuum pumps, you can have those as the starting point and then apply further benefits of each type of vacuum pump to see which one suits your needs best. When considering which pump to get it is best to get one that is manufactured and supported by a company that has invested a lot of time and money in the research and
development of vacuum pumps for the woodworking industry. With the German manufacturer Gebr. Becker GmbH being a market leader, and being at the forefront of research and development of both the oil-free rotary vane and side channel vacuum pumps, they are a brand that can be trusted to deliver true performance when needed. Becker understands that there are many principles of vacuum hold down that manufacturers of CNC tables like to employ in the design, manufacture and supply of their machines. Whilst some manufacturers like to use a pump or multiple pumps that achieve higher vacuum levels but lower flow rates, others prefer to use pumps with greater flow rates and with a lower ultimate vacuum pressure depending on the forces applied and surface area of material. Knowing this, Becker constantly works to make sure that both the high pressure, lower flow rotary vane pumps and the higher flow, lower pressure side channel blowers are being improved to suit the woodworking industry applications where their expertise has meant that they are the market leader around the world in this industry. Here in Australia, Becker Pumps Australia have been working with some of the local manufacturers, OEM distributors and resellers who prefer to use the side channel vacuum pumps rather than the often more popular rotary vane pumps. The reasons behind the preference of some CNC hold down table manufacturers and distributors to use this technology can be varied, from the type of material being used on the router table, to their patented method of air (vacuum) distribution on their tables. With the housing market booming in Australia and more and more kitchens required, plus the increased demand for workstations and office furniture from our growing corporate markets, now is the time to consider upgrading your pumps so that you can have peace of mind that your table will be working for you when you really need it. â—? www.suppliermagazine.com.au

OV E RSEAS REPORT
Huge crowds at Holz-Handwerk.
Judgement at Nuremberg Phil Ashley reports. Not the Academy-award winning movie starring Spencer Tracy, but the Holz-Handwerk fair in Nuremberg, a show for the artisans. This year, the show lifted the bar with exhibitors and visitors alike with more exhibitors, more visitors and more business. The interest from the sector has been so positive that the seven exhibition halls booked out six months ahead of the event. Not really a show for the big panel machine producers; although they were still there but in much smaller booths than you would see at Ligna. The Holz-Handwerk fair is more of a show for the solid woodworkers and people who cut not only panel materials; but almost everything else related to wood. It’s a show more like AWISA than Ligna, and attracts many visitors from Australia. This year the judgement was ‘It just keeps getting better and better.’ Full halls, enthusiastic visitors and very satisfied exhibitors sums up the twin shows of Holz-Handwerk 62 | SupplierMay/June 2018
and Fensterbau Frontale 2018 (show for joinery and window manufacturers). The events were impressive in every respect, with an excellent range of top quality products and information, and excellent numbers for both exhibitors and visitors. The halls at Holz-Handwerk were alive with more than just the buzz of machines and business was booming. With 515 exhibitors (494 in 2016) from 19 countries, this exhibition for machine technology and manufacturing requirements was once again the go-to event for cabinet-makers, joiners and carpenters from all over Europe with many visitors from Australia making the trip. Stefan Dittrich, Exhibition Director for HolzHandwerk, sums up, “With the impetus provided by this successful event, we are highly motivated to prepare for our 20th anniversary exhibition in 2020. Exhibitors and visitors have their sights set on the next event, and numbers intending to participate again are high on both sides.”
Industry giants had only good things to say about the show. Joerg Mayer of Altendorf said “Germany is still our strongest European market but there are other key markets in Southern Europe and Scandinavia. Other emerging markets are Russia, the Middle East and China and we had hundreds of visitors from all these regions.” Juergen Koppell, CEO Leitz Group said “the show started with an avalanche of customers; it was a great start for us.” Mr. Koppell spoke about
the Leitz product adding value for the customer. This could be quality, flexibility or productivity and that this value is Global, even as far away as Australia. Neil Forbes from Weinig Group Australia said “More and more Australian manufacturers come to this show every time. This year we hosted a tour and fifteen people took part from nine companies. They all want to see our machines in action and in different and demanding contexts. Holz-Handwerk is an interesting show with 10% more visitors than Ligna last year but it’s a little smaller with a lot more to see from an Australian perspective.” Gregor Baumbusch is marketing manager of Weinig Group and said “For us, digitalisation is the main topic at Nuremberg and this show is the perfect platform to show our customers what this is all about.” Stefan Kremer from Felder Australia said “We continue to be driven by our customers and are growing all the time. We’ve just opened up a new factory in Austria and Felder is buying more land for future expansion. This is a great

show for us at Felder and we’ve seen plenty of Australian visitors this year; quite a few of them serious buyers.” SCM Group Director Luigi DeVito said there was “An incredible participation of customers; it’s so important for us to be here. The number of orders, contracts and new contacts has increased considerably over that of the 2016 fair, in line with the incredibly positive trend seen lately by SCM in the international market and especially in Germany, a market you would think is dominated by German technology.” Of course a show as big as this features other
things besides machines, software and hardware. The Bavarian Carpentry Association had a special stand with the long title ‘feel the spirit of the room: holistic design concepts.’ Managing Director Dr Christian Wenzler explains: “For a long time, the furnishing trades have been focused on the design of individual objects and products, but what we are now seeing is a return to holistic approaches for the design of buildings, rooms, furniture and peripheral fittings. Our special show presents special design concepts, explains fundamental design
ideas that allow the spirit of the room created to shine through, and explores the opportunities open to trades that takes a creative and holistic approach. The ‘spirit’ of a room occurs when
everything somehow fits together.” With 1,329 exhibitors and a whopping 111,000 visitors the Holz-Handwerk show in Nuremberg is second only to Ligna in alternate years and in many respects is a far better show for Australian manufacturers that don’t necessarily need large, fully automated manufacturing cells. You can still see these at the Nuremberg show but it’s not the focus. The 20th exhibition will take place in the Exhibition Centre, Nuremberg from 18th to 21st March 2020. It is in the same year as AWISA but talk to your supplier; there might be an industry tour coinciding with the show in Germany and that’s going to make it very worthwhile. ●

OV E RSEAS REPORT
Xylexpo, an Objective and a Starting Point
Martin graphitied.
Phil Ashley reports. So, says Raphael Prati, Group Marketing and Communications Director of Biesse Group. Raphael said that “Xylexpo is the most important international trade show which takes place in even numbered years; not by coincidence, in the design capital of Milan.” In this, the 26th edition spanning fifty years of this long-running event, a series of posters were displayed dating back to the original show in 1968, then known as Interbimall. A year later it became Interbimall for woodworking equipment and Sasmil for accessories and semi-finished products, and returned to just Interbimall in 1976. It wasn’t known as Xylexpo until 1998 and at the 2000 show, Sasmil was added again for the next three shows. Now it’s just Xylexpo. The fair has undergone some changes, most notable the move to a purpose-built exhibition centre a few train stops out of Milan. This year just four halls were open but these are big halls and in terms of space would be twice as big as previous AWISA shows, but a third what you would see in Germany. This is surprising given the number of woodworking machinery manufacturers located in Italy, and in fact, in the same region as the show. Also surprising is that some suppliers didn’t bring a machine to their stand, having only a bank of TV screens to show their product. The cost of trade shows every month 64 | SupplierMay/June 2018
or so around the World is starting to bite. The numbers of visitors are far fewer than either of the two major German shows but the up side is that there’s plenty of room to move around and there is always time to talk to the sales staff. There aren’t any Australian suppliers travelling there, at least not that we could see and there were very few Australian manufacturers making the trip. Perhaps an explanation of the size and purpose of the show can be found in the comments of Dario Corbetta, director of the exhibition. He said “Xylexpo has found its place in the more and more crowded and sometimes messy landscape of industry exhibitions, we have made a clear choice, namely to be a stage for high technology, and this approach has increased the participation of an even more selected and qualified audience, with decision-making power and adequate expertise.” What he’s saying is that the German shows are crowded (they are, especially Holz-Handwerk in Nuremberg) and they are messy (too many variable things on show). This year the show attracted 17,781 visitors, 2.1 percent more than the previous edition. Among them, 5,032 came from abroad and the rest from Italy. Xylexpo reports 37,000 people accessed the show but this is made up of multiple attendances by individuals. The fair has had its share of controversy. Some years ago SCM and Biesse both decided not to exhibit at
Costa Sanders.
Xylexpo and instead, run their own events either at their own factory or at a hired facility in Milan. The reason for this goes to the high cost of running such an event. It is notable that after this, the same companies took the same tactic at our own AWISA show here in Australia but thankfully this politicking is over. Lorenzo Primultini, president of the exhibition and Acimall said “Our recent story demonstrates that Xylexpo has a clear role and position in the international exhibition calendar. It is the top showcase for panel processing technology.” The industry is experiencing a sort of ‘second youth’ with several regions around the world going back to economic situations similar to the pre-crisis period (they said this two years ago). “We are confident that Xylexpo’s fiftieth anniversary will be combined with an excellent season for the global markets”, said Dario Corbetta, director of Xylexpo. “Current figures indicate a positive trend of the Italian market, which is not only an industry leader offering
world-class technology, but also a ‘consumption market’ that draws the attention of all global vendors”. Corbetta continued “The widespread return to pre-crisis order and revenue levels was a powerful driver for exhibitors, who brought their best technology to Milan to match the demand of a dynamic global market.” The dates of the next Xylexpo have already been fixed: Monday 25 to Friday 29, May 2020, changing the traditional Tuesday-to-Saturday timeframe. If you fancy a trip to Rome; Venice; Florence or the Italian lakes around that time, a few days off to visit Xylexpo could be very worthwhile.● The first show poster.

Altendorf Expands Altendorf’s stand at HolzHandwerk displayed mostly the F45 panel saw and a host of F45 accessories as Altendorf sees this machine as the most important to the European market. Interesting was the machine with cutaway parts to show customers what’s inside their machine. A major selling point with the Altendorf brand has always been the strength and rigidity of the machine and this was revealed fully at HolzHandwerk. At the Xylexpo show Altendorf did not have their own stand and were represented by Albricci; a wholesale industrial machinery distributor. Supplier revealed in our last e-news that an edge banding manufacturer was ‘under scrutiny’ for purchase and we can now reveal that the Altendorf Group has
acquired Maschinenbau Hebrock GmbH, a familyowned manufacturer based in Bünde (Germany). Hebrock develops and manufactures high-quality edge banding machines since 1980, with distribution channels in over thirty countries. Altendorf Group’s strategy of combining complementary, traditional businesses to achieve growth is supported by Avedon Capital Partners of Düsseldorf, a specialist investor in mediumsized companies which has held a majority stake in Altendorf Group since late 2017. Horst Hebrock said “We have had friendly relations with Altendorf Group for many years and know that growth orientation is the right way to meet the challenges of the future. We operate in the same target markets as Altendorf
and will undoubtedly be able to achieve many synergies together. A joint, future-oriented strategy that addresses both product distribution and development can only benefit both companies.” Joerg F. Mayer, Director of Altendorf Group said “As Altendorf Group, we aim to offer premium machinery for the craftsmen in panel-based furniture manufacturing.” At Xylexpo we met with Stephanie Johnston Biggs who is responsible for the marketing of 20% of Altendorf product worldwide. Stephanie tells us that Altendorf has been renamed
‘Altendorf Group’ to reflect the new direction the company is moving and that since Avedon purchased a majority stake in Altendorf; they have ‘a lot’ of money to invest. In addition to the purchase of Hebrock, Stephanie let out that Altendorf Group will be purchasing another machinery company sometime later this year. Supplier has no information on what company this will be but in line with Joerg F. Mayer’s comments, a CNC machine manufacturer would fit the new group very well. Altendorf will be exhibiting at AWISA and a visit to their stand is a must. ●

Biesse Thinkforward Phil Ashley reports. At Holz-Handwerk Biesse covered an exhibition area of almost 800 square metres and displayed 12 highperformance machines. “In comparison to HolzHandwerk 2014 we increased our exhibition space by 30%, intentionally designing it to combine attractiveness and efficiency” recalls Pigorsch Jacek, Managing Director of Biesse Deutschland. It should be noted that at HolzHandwerk, extra space is not readily available, even for a company the size and influence of Biesse Group. At Xylexpo and closer to home Biesse Group was able to get the stand they wanted and were able to present thirty fully-functioning machines including three fully automated solutions (manufacturing cell) on a stand of 3,000 square metres. In Milan Federico Broccoli, Biesse Wood Division Director/SalesSubsidiaries Division Director said “Automaction is the new concept which provides

the inspiration for Biesse's participation in Xylexpo 2018. The brainchild of the Thinkforward business philosophy, Automaction perfectly epitomises the practical, concrete nature of Biesse solutions for the creation of an automated and interconnected production process. At Biesse its actions not words; products and not prototypes, numbers and results!” Some of the new releases at the shows in Germany and Italy included the Biesse Selco WN2, a new sectioning centre aimed at the artisan who decides to make an initial investment to improve production and machining quality. This step from a classic manual machine to the first real beam-saw cutting technology is reliable, user-friendly and affordable. Biesse also featured their new Winline 16 multi-centre designed for artisans and small firms that want to increase their production, and mediumlarge factories that produce
small irregular shaped batches or variations. From the compact Rover A that can produce every type of furnishing element with one single machine; to the configurable Rover B that ensures a quality finish and is reliable under all working conditions, to the top-performance Rover C that can work particularly large pieces, all aspects of wood and panel manufacturing were covered at both shows. In Milan Biesse presented several machines working in conjunction with a robot,
including a Rover A; Stream MDS edge-bander and Viet Opera R2 sanding machine fed by two integrated robots. Visitors were enthusiastic about Biesse’s new technologies and placed a record 21.6 million euros worth of orders in Milan. Also from Biesse was the SOPHIA software platform, first shown at last year’s Ligna fair. Created in conjunction with Biesse, SOPHIA enables customers to access a wide and ever-increasing range of services to streamline and rationalise their work
www.suppliermagazine.com.au
management processes. It's based on the connection to a cloud service and special sensors applied to the Biesse machines and works with both Apple and Android devices. The information and data on the technologies in use can be recorded and sent in real time to optimise performance, prevent malfunctions and increase the productivity of machines and systems. In addition, the direct connection with the Biesse replacement parts portal and the ability to upgrade software in a few clicks provides customers with everyday work tools that can simplify a host of tasks. The key value of Sophia is the power of its predictive nature; the ability of this technology to offer a vision of the future, anticipating issues that may arise, identifying solutions and improving performance. Following the Think4ward core concept, which stands for the forward-thinking automation and software solutions to help customers leverage the fourth industrial revolution, Federico Broccoli, Wood Division Director/ Sales and Subsidiaries Division Director at Biesse, says: “4.0 is for us not only a number representing the

so-called new industrial revolution, but a real commitment toward our customers, to take them, thanks to our ‘4.0 ready’ technologies, to those efficiencies nowadays so essential in order to be competitive in a more and more global market.” The IoT features within the SOPHIA platform guarantee a significant increase in productivity, courtesy of a process of constant, accurate and comprehensive analysis and reporting on manufacturing performance. Biesse Group is showing unstoppable growth and the evidence is in the results of the 2018 quarterly which showed a +18.2% increase in incoming orders for the wood division compared to the previous year. The orders portfolio of the Group has also increased by 24%, reaching a value of 234 million euros, the highest in the history of the group. The enthusiasm continues as Biesse focuses on the markets in Oceania and the United States for the next events on the schedule: AWISA in Sydney from 4th to 7th July and IWF in Atlanta from 22nd to 25th August.●
Neil Forbes.
Think Weinig As market leader in solid wood and panel processing, the Weinig Group will exhibit no less than thirteen class-leading machines at AWISA. We caught up with Australian MD Neil Forbes at Holz-Handwerk in Nuremberg after leading a group of nine Australian manufacturers on a tour of European Weinig and Holz-Her production sites. Neil said “We’re looking forward to a record event in Sydney. We’ll have our top selling machines, all focused on Australian manufacturing and all up and running. The window industry has started to take hold of 5-axes technology in Australia; they’re looking for total flexibility. In the past the Unicontrol joinery machines were very effective but you still had piles of parts waiting to be processed; now a 5-axes machine does every part in the one cycle. Manufacturers expect a lot more from their equipment these days. We’re starting to sell intelligent panel store and material handling systems and we’ve just put one into a company in Melbourne feeding two nesting machines.” In Nuremberg and Milan the Weinig Group presented a number of new releases. These include the World premiere of the new Unimat 217; the compact craftsman's
machine for four-sided solid wood processing. The new WMC (WEINIG machine control) also celebrated its premiere in Nuremberg as did the ProfiPress LB that combines all of WEINIG’s know-how in high-frequency gluing and press technology into a single machine. At Nuremberg and Milan, the Nextec technology from Holz-Her made its debut; a complete solution for a modern furniture finish, efficient production and effective sales; Nextec can produce made-to-measure furniture in just three steps. From Weinig, AWISA will showcase the highly successful Cube Plus four sided Automatic planer. The easiest four-sided planing machine to operate on the market offers automatic positioning via touchscreen display and completes planing work 10 times faster than a straightener and planer. The Powermat 700; the world’s highest selling Weinig profiling machine was exhibited in Nuremberg and Milan and will also be shown in Sydney. And in sawing you will see possibly the only band re-saw at the show, the BKS Re-saw that can be fitted with SplitAssist laser width measurement. Neil promises a record AWISA event and the Weinig Group will be there in force. SupplierMay/June 2018 | 67

Holz-Her makes a lot of edge banding machines and no matter what brand of CNC or sawing machines manufacturers own, chances are high that they will also own a Holz-Her edge bander in preference to all others. The impressive AWISA list includes five Holz-Her edge banding machines from the Streamer to Lumina models. The Streamer 1054 is the smallest machine in the series and will demonstrate how Holz-Her is able to offer high-technology in a small space. The Auriga 1308 adds a high degree of automation with productivity above the industry average. The Sprint 1329 is designed for the highest requirements of quality and flexibility in an extremely compact package. The Accura 1556 is designed for high quality artisan use with 100% repetition accuracy guaranteed with the use of servo-drives. And topping off one of the most impressive displays of edge banders at AWISA will be the Lumina 1375 with the awardwinning LTronic with servo axes and invisible laser-edge technology. With all Holz-Her edge banders a perfect edge is the order of the day with the easy-to-use PUR cartridge system available on all models. Three machining centres will also be on display at AWISA starting with the ProMaster 7225 5-axis machine; a larger machine than that shown at Holz-Handwerk in Germany earlier this year. The ProMaster is a heavy-duty machine popular with joinery manufacturers in Australia. It delivers high stock removal and generous machining dimensions; is ideal for manufacturing in solid wood and the machining height doesn’t include the suction cups like other machines 68 | SupplierMay/June 2018

Vertical CNC processing is also booming and the Weinig Group will have the Evolution 7405 machine for you to take a good look at what this space-saving technology can contribute to your business, either as a primary machine with a cutting plant, or as a secondary machine to improve production. These days a high degree of automation is called for and the Weinig Group are extremely proficient in moving material of all shapes and dimensions. At AWISA HolzHer will demonstrate how a profitable smart workshop can evolve for businesses of all sizes in combination with the Store-Master intelligent panel store and material handling system. To demonstrate how seamless your production can be, a StoreMaster 5110 warehouse system will seamlessly feed a Dynestic 7532 nesting machine and a Tectra 6120 beam saw to achieve unheard of levels of productivity and flexibility, two words that are pivotal in today’s manufacturing environment.●

Leuco.
Tooling on Show Phil Ashley reports. Leitz and Leuco are the two International tooling companies that are more likely to bring you innovations. Others do from time to time (AKE is one of those) but the development budgets of the two industry giants and their reach into manufacturing plants around the World
guarantee that their tooling is often the yardstick others go by. At both recent shows in Nuremberg and Milan, the two companies impressed yet again with their commitment to bringing the wood worker the most efficient tool delivering the most performance. Nowadays
manufacturers realise that it’s not always about the initial cost but more about what the tool will produce and how long the tool will last. Cutting tools are already at a high state of development so new innovations do not come along as common as they do with machinery, but
they are just as significant and important to the wood industries. Don’t forget to drop in and see not only Leuco and Leitz, but all the tooling suppliers at the AWISA fair. From Leuco we see the new diamond-tipped LEUCO jointing cutters with their innovative technical surface “airFace” reduce noise during machining. The LEUCO DIAREX airFace, in particular is ideal for the clean jointing of the new anti-fingerprint panels from different manufacturers because of their high axis angle. Leuco claim that their DIAREX sawblades are now using a new type of diamond for the cutting tips for longer tool life than ever before. Also from Leuco comes a new type of milling cutter made of a new special long-life tungsten carbide for

cleanly milling magnet bond boards without generating sparks. Something that Leuco do very well is to look at new products and develop tools that can process these products efficiently. Leuco are always releasing new sawblades that cater for the characteristics of different materials. No longer is it a ‘one-saw-fits-all’ philosophy; the best saw is the one designed for the material you are using and it’s more efficient to change the blade when cutting a different material. Leuco introduced several new saw-blades at Holz-Handwerk to process honeycomb panels and several new materials. A fun activity on the Leuco stand in Germany was popcorn
eaten with helium gas; it didn’t work well for me, but others had a ‘blast,’ One of the major topics from Leitz was service. Service is an issue for all suppliers, not just those with complex machinery. Service from a tooling supplier needs to be quick, efficient and deliver your tool in an as-new condition. Service at the push of a button promises the new service concept from Oberkochen (Leitz head office and manufacturing) that hides behind the name LeitzXPress. The basic idea behind LeitzXPress is that in the everyday life of Leitz customers there are always situations in which they are confronted with very special tasks that they

only can discuss with a tooling specialist. Whether short-term resharpening or questions about process optimization, with a push on the LeitzXPress button (supplied by Leitz) the customer triggers a process resulting in direct contact by the responsible Leitz technical advisor. In less than one hour, the customer receives a personal call and can discuss his problem directly or arrange a visit. This kind of reliability and customer service is unique in the industry. Leitz CEO Mr. Koppell spoke about the Leitz product adding value for the customer. This could be quality, flexibility or productivity and that this value is Global, even as far away
as Australia. One example of the tooling industry getting behind manufacturers is the development of a new window system; ClimaTrend Style. From the viewpoint of window manufacturers, the Leitz designers have paid particular attention on the efficient production and processing on CNC machines. Thanks to the modular design principle, it makes no difference whether woodaluminium windows or wood windows are produced. The design elements can be implemented in both material concepts with the same tooling. The savings made possible in terms of material, tool and set-up time make the production of ClimaTrend Style particularly efficient.●

The five-axis spindle offers unparalleled finish while the market-exclusive spindle
SCM High Impact The SCM Group figures strongly in Nuremberg and of course at their home show in Milan. A supplier with a more complete range of machines than any other, SCM is able to learn from every type of machine they produce and this knowledge lends itself to the technology in even their top end CNC systems. “HolzHandwerk is the right venue to showcase one of SCM's all-time main assets: solutions that are unique in this industry and that are able to meet all market needs. to those of large industrial companies, from solid wood to panel processing,” says Luigi De Vito, SCM Wood Division and Group Sales and Marketing Director. “A competitive edge also derives from an exclusive, continuous commitment to innovation, to keep up with the major changes underway in production technologies.” From SCM Group at HolzHandwerk in Nuremberg we saw the Maestro Smartech, a revolutionary remote assistance and maintenance system which

can house up to four tools. Also on show; the morbidelli cx200; the vertical machining centre, able to handle all drilling and milling operations in less than 10m2. Cycle times are among the lowest in the market thanks to the two drilling heads with RO.AX (Rotoaxial spindle) technology. In Germany, SCM has been operating for over 30 years and has seen a 35% increase in the orders portfolio during the last year alone, partly because of a boom in window and door manufacturing there and partly due to SCM Group’s innovations. In Milan, SCM Group presented a high-impact exhibition booth of over 3,000 square metres with over fifty machines with the slogan ‘Work simple. Work digital.’ Solidifying their position as a leader in digital products and services seamlessly integrated with the solid process technologies; SCM Group’s main focus was on the new IoT (Internet of Things) platform, Maestro connect; in response to the latest Industry 4.0 requirements. Maestro connect is a system for collecting and analysing data retrieved from SCM machines to increasingly monitor and optimise production processes, enabling on one hand a full control of production performances by the customer and on the other hand a series of micro services such as, for example, a timely and smart maintenance and optimized spare parts management. New products at Xylexpo in Milan included the squaring machine p40 by celaschi, able to machine both solid wood and panels, and settable to machine joining grooves and J-Shape profiles and to perform straight or inclined machining. For edge-banding, SCM presents new devices starting from the olimpic range: its new range of Fastback panel return systems that
increases the production efficiency of the stand-alone edge-banding machine up to 20-30% with a single machine operator. An air-cushion bench positioned infeed considerably helps the operator when processing panels of large dimensions. Also in Milan and particularly interesting for small business was the combined end cutting and rounding unit for edge-banding machines that combines end cutting and rounding operations, executed with one tool, allowing the design of machines with a small footprint. The device was demonstrated on the new SCM minimax me35. This is the smallest edge-bander available on the market with the full range of processing units and won first place in the XIA awards at the Milan show. SCM Group is experiencing an extraordinary year, closer and closer to the target of 700 million euros turnover and with constantly growing staff numbers; currently at a headcount of over 3600 people operating both in Italy and in the 20 overseas branches. SCM Group has been operating as a branch in Australia now since last AWISA in Melbourne and has an exciting program of development. Known for decades as a quality manufacturer of static machines; the company now offers everything others are able to, right up to fully automated smart factories. SCM Group operates in areas others may not, including manufacturing in aerospace and marine applications.●
