NZ PM Drops in at Local Cabinet Makers Near Christchurch The Right Honourable Bill English recently ‘dropped in’ to visit cabinet makers Misco Joinery in Kaiapoi; just North of Christchurch, New Zealand. Supplier Magazine’s Phil Ashley was there and spoke to Biesse’s Warrick Small about the equipment. Warrick said “This isn’t the biggest Biesse installation in the area but it’s certainly one of the more interesting. This technology is actually the result of a partnership with Biesse that began with their first Rover B machine installed in 2006 in an actual farm shed. Today we can see a very modern, automated factory where a Winstore automated warehouse feeds two Rover B-FT machines supplying bespoke cabinet parts to two Biesse Roxyl edge banders, one with the latest ‘airforce’ (laser) technology.” Michael Chernishoff is a Director of the family business that started in 1965 with his father Ivan. The company

produces joinery for residential homes and apartments throughout New Zealand. Prime Minister Bill English said “What I like about this business is that it’s helping with one of the biggest challenges families have; getting into a home at a reasonable cost.” Of the Biesse equipment he said “They’re very smart machines.” To Director’s Michael and Glenn he said “You should take great credit for the wonderful job you’ve done, demonstrating to the rest of New Zealand what can be done to change a city.” Local Waimakariri MP Matt Dooley added “What Misco reflects is the buoyant economy here in Kaiapoi and how far we’ve come in regeneration since the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 which devastated the city.” ●

goCabinets Adds Design Tool It has been a busy 12 months for the goCabinets team, with a push in development bringing several new and improved features into the free-to-join ordering system. Adding to the arsenal of tools available to goCabinets members is a new fully interactive design tool that displays the plan view layout of cabinets being ordered - all from a room shape that is specified by the user. Changes can be made in real time to cabinet specifications from the room view, which interacts immediately by displaying live pricing updates for each product as alterations are made. The design tool includes a printable PDF of the design created by the user, along with an accompanying product list; all of which are coordinated with clear product numbering for easy reference. ‘The design tool has really helped our customers in adding a more visual element to their order, which ultimately inspires confidence that what

they are ordering is what they need’ mentions Justin Collins, goCabinets Project Manager. ‘Our customers are particularly enjoying the PDF which can be used as a reference point for either themselves, or for their installers when they are on site’. A customer can begin creating their design in one of the pre-set rectangular or L-Shape room layouts, or can start from scratch and draw a custom room according to their client’s specifications. Inner walls, windows and doors can all be added through the design tool to

ensure visual accuracy and enable the customer to make allowances for the existing structural elements within the room. ‘It is perfect for our manufacturers: not only can they accept an order for cut-to-size cabinetry online, but now they are also providing their customers with access to a free design tool from which they can also order and track all of their jobs.’ The goCabinets Design Tool is available now and free to use for all goCabinets members. ●

These two days in Tuscany will offer a full-immersion introduction to the advances made by the Oikos and Area CNC work centres, both of which are ideal for companies working in the large-scale private, residential and public construction sector. The event is also the perfect opportunity to gain a first-hand experience of the constantly growing trend in timber construction. The decision to go back to building in wood is a positive trend that is shared by many countries around the world. And the reasons for it are well-known: wood has anti-seismic qualities, its style and beauty are matchless and it offers environmental sustainability, high

safety standards and a reasonable price. At the same time, it is important not to overlook the fact that if timber construction is becoming more popular, it is also because of the major advances that the technology in this sector has made. And this is an area that SCM research and development has and continues to invest widely in. As a result, two important projects are born: OIKOS, for machining structural beams and X-lam/CLT wall panels and AREA for machining walls, insulating panels and curved beams. Two different machines that share the same design concept proper of all Scm machining centres.●

SCM Opens Its Doors SCM, a leading company in the woodworking technology sector, with a major branch in Australia, will be presenting its latest technological innovations in timber construction at its production plant in Sinalunga (Siena) this month.

Iconic Ghost Chair Celebrates Milestone This year marked the 30th anniversary of the iconic Ghost chair manufactured by Fiam Italia. Phil Ashley visited the manufacturer in Pesaro and spoke to Daniele Livi about the design. Vittorio Livi is President of Fiam Italia and said “A photographer friend came to see me in my glass workshop, saw me standing on the stool and took a picture that was published in some newspapers. That’s when I thought: why not try to make furniture with this material?” On the day of my visit Vittorio was unavailable so I asked his son Daniele to recreate the moment. He obliged without hesitation and so we reconstructed history; like father, like son. Daniele’s account of the original photo is slightly different. He said “A photographer friend told Vittorio that glass furniture was not possible and to demonstrate that it was, Vittorio stood on the ‘Onda’ stool and the photo was taken.” Whatever happened on that day, Vittorio was to go on and create some of the most beautiful glass objects, many of them enduring furniture designs made in collaboration with some of the World’s most creative designers. “From the first, self-built oven to bend glass sheets through our collaboration with artists and designers, it’s been an ongoing learning curve. Along with design innovation, Fiam has always invested in technological innovation too. In this respect, the partnership with Intermac for the development of solutions such as bilateral grinding machines and the Master processing centres range is a strategic one,” Vittorio said. Fiam currently use the Master 30 e Genius CT-A processing machine to produce their innovative designs. One of the most iconic designs produced by Fiam Italia is the Ghost chair. Designer Cini Boeri had been working with Fiam for a few years and in 1985 proposed a design ‘That disappears; that exists and does not exist, a chair that could not be seen.’ She made the proposal to Vittorio, 16 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

conscious that the design could be completely unfeasible. She said “I never had seriously thought of making an armchair in glass. My reservations were overcome by the challenge and I thought; if Fiam would be so good as to be able to produce it our challenge was to prove the potential of this material, glass.” Vittorio says “In Fiam’s workshops, we have always tried to respond to designer ideas, even when they were apparently impossible to implement. Designers, like artists, have a creativity that stimulates cutting-edge innovation. So, over time, we have been able to develop new technologies that have allowed us to create unique objects on an industrial scale”.

"It took four years of design and prototypes to create the first chair made of glass which, with its transparency, still today gives you emotions and makes you dream." Ghost takes its form from a single GC Planibel Clear sheet of 12mmthickness glass, which is first cut by a high-pressure, high-speed water jet (1,000 meters per second) on the Intermac Master 33.3 3-axes machining centre. This single, high-precision cut is followed by the bending process, during which the glass is heated. After being cut, the glass panel is shaped and polished on the machining centre which guarantees the level of polish required for an object of such elevated design. Only then can the glass be heated and bent into its final shape. Daniele Livi explains; “Ghost is the only Fiam product that needs to be bent twice to achieve a perfectly ergonomic shape. Software plays a key role in the

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

The Paolo and Francesca table

design and creation of such objects; it's the software that combines with the creative genius of the designer, allows the necessary freedom and simplicity that makes an otherwise extremely complex object possible. The perfect integration of the software with the Intermac machining centre means that the machine can faithfully recreate the object as designed.” Vittorio says of the Ghost, “When I saw the chair model I thought it might be one of those dreams to fulfil. Although I immediately understood the technical difficulties that we were to face, the project immediately excited me and I wanted to turn it into a challenge,

with the understanding that certainly we would have to face a long and difficult research, but at the same time useful to stimulate new stages of technological and aesthetic innovation. Perhaps this project became possible thanks to the use of a magic material like glass: the most interesting material in modern age and the future of mankind. It took four years of design and prototypes to create the first chair made of glass which, with its transparency, still today gives you emotions and makes you dream. I think this example of style and innovation is the perfect synthesis of all the objects we would like to accompany us throughout our lifetime.”

Ghost recently celebrated its 30th year at the Milan Furniture Show with event partner Intermac of Biesse Group. A masterpiece of design can only become reality once technology has advanced enough to convert a wild vision into a work of genius. So it is that Intermac innovation has become a technological partner for this special anniversary. It was a Master machining centre and the power of a jet of water that was able to convert a simple panel of glass into the contours of a product of design that made history. The work of a company from the Marches region that has always skilfully processed glass into works of art; Fiam Italia and Biesse Group are united by a long-standing professional relationship. Other works are made by Fiam Italia in collaboration with some of the World’s leading furniture designers. Amongst these are the Atlas Table

A significant work was recently made for Pope Francesco in 2015. Named Crucifix “Energia del Mondo” it was made from recycled glass used by the local populace to symbolise the Pope’s connection to the people of the region. Because of this connection, the crucifix was returned to Villa Mirafiore near Pesaro. The villa, which dates back to 1260, is the museum to host glass works produced by Vittorio Livi.

“The Ghost is an immortal product, one that overcomes every prejudice about glass.” Vittorio said “The Ghost is an immortal product, one that overcomes every prejudice about glass. Ghost, is an inexistent but deceptive armchair, because you can sit in it and it’s even comfortable. It’s solid and can even hold a heavy person; it’s large but doesn’t show it; it occupies space but doesn’t seem to and it goes with any chair that would never, in its wildest dreams, imagine being made of glass.” Designer Cini Boeri said “The ingredients of this miracle are technology; which makes an alternative material such as glass ductile and tough; the cleanliness of the object, which accredits it among the most demanding defenders of ecological values; the transparency, which makes it invisible and thus appropriate for any kind of furniture; the eternity of its smoothness, its duration, its beauty.” I couldn’t meet Vittorio on the day of my visit but on the train to Bologna the next day, on the same train; in the same carriage and sitting opposite me was a man with a shock of white hair who could be none other than Vittorio himself. What a privilege! ●

Hafele Small Spaces in the Spotlight Today more than half the world’s population lives in cities. For many years now, Häfele have focused on the global trend toward urbanisation and furniture in smaller living spaces. Phil Ashley visited Häfele at their head office in Nagold, Germany to find out more. About 1.5 million people a week are joining cities across the world through a combination of migration and childbirth. Urbanisation creates huge opportunities for smart, eco-cities but there are also significant challenges. One of these challenges is how people will live comfortably in smaller spaces as living space becomes a scarce and ever costlier commodity. For many years now, the people at Häfele have been thinking outside the box, focusing on shrinking living spaces and the related consequences for the furniture industry. The order of the day for reduced spaces is furniture that offers greater adaptability, versatility and functionality. Häfele’s work on this issue is not new and started in 2012 with Häfele‘s ‘Functionality Cube’ with its 40 square metres of living space. This was the incentive for a more 20 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

intensive discussion of the Micro Living theme throughout the furniture industry. In 2013 Häfele’s ‘Youthlab’ presented a futuristic realisation of a youth hostel room, inspired planners and furniture manufacturers to think about the possibilities of small-space living and furniture. As recently as this year at the Bau trade fair in Munich 2017, the ‘MicroApart 20/30’ concept (in about 20 to 30 square metres of living space) developed in collaboration with the interior architect Kristina Blassy set new standards in terms of interior ‘size’. Following this; at interzum this year Häfele allowed visitors to fully experience furniture technology around all aspects of the megatrend of ‘micro living’ and presented innovative ideas for the production of intelligent furniture for small spaces for the furniture industry. Häfele’s motto for micro living is ‘More life per square metre’ and a significant gain in functionality, comfort and convenience for furnishings. The display was reported in the public media and on German television and radio. The interzum organisers thought so highly of this issue they made it a central

theme at an Interzum exhibition preview, paying tribute to Häfele’s contributions. Peter Courtin; Häfele’s head of brand communications said “It’s not about exactly this kitchen; this living or this bedroom furniture, for Häfele it’s about the inspiration and the fittings. We give the furniture makers the idea to open up their minds to what is possible.” As an international market leader, Häfele is an expert in hardware fittings. They know the furniture industry as well as anybody else. They have a wide-ranging experience and are competent in all areas of furniture, from outfitting, opening and closing, to electrifying furniture. Against the backdrop of a holistic view of furniture, it has long been the company’s practice to turn its expertise into new products and inspiring ideas throughout the entire process chain of providing services, particularly geared to the needs of the furniture industry. In Nagold, Häfele’s head office and showroom, the company holds a permanent display of all their products in a real-World setting, including a display of furniture for micro-living. www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Interior Design & Production Software

CAD+T goes Virtual Reality Häfele is one of the first furniture hardware suppliers with a furniture industry-related concept to embrace the prospect of addressing the challenges of micro-living. To exploit the growing global market opportunities in small spaces the furniture industry urgently needs new ideas for furniture that can be produced efficiently and delight with its inspiring functionality. This is why Häfele expanded its position as a system partner and outlined the paths to the future at interzum. Paths, that apply to the new world of general scarcity in residential space, the accompanying price increases, the merging of living areas into often smaller units. In the modern urban environment dividing walls are disappearing and living areas are merging. What is already becoming a reality in the combined kitchen/living room even in Australia will soon become the pattern for other areas of the home as well. When living areas flow into

each other and furniture defines the living zones, the importance of clever furniture grows. Advanced functions in cleverly thought-out and designed furniture have the effect of changing the space, making it more attractive and ‘liveable’. Furniture technology is becoming the decisive innovator for this new living environment: the fitting defines the furniture. Well-thought-out, quality fittings give furniture the necessary, space-saving flexibility for daily use, and create the prerequisites for comfortable living and working in small units. The concept for flexible living and working in small spaces using the examples of a student apartment and a business apartment, introduced by Häfele at interzum illustrated where the furniture industry is heading. Both apartments consist of furniture manufactured industrially in modular grid dimensions. It’s an interesting perspective for the future that will give the industry fresh momentum. “Thinking ahead, for our customers in the furniture industry and for users of smart furniture in a new era, that is our credo,” says Sibylle Thierer, the company’s CEO. More and more people are living alone and moving into the cities. This is where they can find jobs, education and cultural life. However, living space is scarce in congested urban areas. The international trend of ‘Micro Living’, comfortable living in a small area is challenging the furniture industry and provides opportunities for the entire industry from manufacture through to retail and export. The furniture industry must provide quality living solutions that are attractive and flexible in a quick and cost-effective way. Affordable solutions for families, convenient living concepts for the elderly, innovative living spaces for students and versatile apartments for temporary staff will all be needed in the not-too-distant future. This is where Häfele comes in with its comprehensive portfolio of well22 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

engineered functionality solutions and its many years of experience. Anyone who thinks micro living means making sacrifices or going without anything is wrong. “Less is more” is influencing living areas even in Australia where large living areas are the norm. In order for architects and planners to be able to implement microliving solutions that are functional and above all worth living in a cost-effective and sustainable way; they need the support of clever system solutions and innovative products. Our pictures show several examples of what can be achieved with Häfele products and some clever thinking; the Häfele cube; Cool, compact living; a working coffee table and an office in a box. Peter Courtin said “At Häfele we know about light; fittings; movement and technology. We have six production plants around the World so we control our product design and innovation. Our aim is to keep ahead of trends and to work with our clients to create the perfect environment, no matter what size it is.” ● www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Hideaway Compact Bin Range Recently Upgraded The Hideaway Compact 2 x 40L bin has been a proven winner with 80L storage capacity fitting into a 450mm cabinet. Now that is has been upgraded along with the rest of the Hideaway Compact bin range, it’s easy to offer a larger bin that is reliable and has a smooth closing action, making it the ideal waste and recycling solution for family kitchens. The core of the Hideaway Compact bin upgrade is the new 45kg soft close over extension runners, which give an extremely smooth closing

action. While adding the new soft close feature, functionality has not been compromised. Like all Hideaway bins, the Compact bin range maintains the ability for the runners to fully over-extend, allowing easy removal of the back bucket independent of the front bucket when mounted at benchtop height. Two other features have also been added to make installation easier. The new runners feature a press release disconnect device for easy installation and cleaning of the bins.

To allow easier refinement of the bin installation, the door mounting bracket now has 6-way adjustment with the ability to adjust the tilt of the door panel. In addition to the soft-close runners, the 40lt range also has a patented Air Vent System to maximise bag volume. Four U-Shaped air vents have been designed into the lip of the bucket, which allows trapped air to escape, as you push your bag into the bucket cavity. This unique, patented design will eliminate the frustration of trapped air restricting the liner. The Hideaway Compact 2 x 40L bin is available in 2 models – the KC240SCD door pull model, and the KC240SCH handle pull model for use behind hinge doors. Hideaway Bins are available exclusively through distribution partners, Nover, Hafele and Galvin’s Hardware. ●

Fenix NTM by Nover Combines Aesthetics with Technological Performance

24 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

FENIX NTM® by Nover - a super opaque nanotech material - is an innovative interior design product, created by Arpa Industriale that combines elegant aesthetic solutions with state-of-the-art technological performance. It is suitable for both vertical and horizontal use. The external surface of FENIX NTM involves the use of nanotechnology and it is characterized by next generation acrylic resins, hardened and fixed with Electron Beam Curing process opening up new avenues in the field of interior design. With low light reflectivity, its surface is extremely opaque, anti-fingerprint and features a very pleasant soft touch. Thanks to the use of nanotechnologies, FENIX NTM thermally heals any superficial micro-scratches, as its name indicates. In addition, FENIX NTM is highly resistant to scratches, abrasion, rubbing and dry heat. It also withstands impacts, acid-based solvents and household reagents. It significantly reduces the bacterial load making its surface hygienic and easy to clean. It is also liquid repellent and mould-proof. Thanks to its special characteristics, FENIX NTM can be used for both horizontal and vertical surfaces and a very wide range of typical interior design applications, both for home and business markets: kitchens, bathrooms, as a material for worktops, doors and walls, for splashbacks; hospitality, healthcare, as well as furnishings and fittings such as tables, bookcases, chairs, partitioning. Its surface characteristics make it a high-performance material and, furthermore, it can represent a valid alternative to other materials, such as solid surfaces and glass, with the added advantage of easy workability. Ever since it was launched, FENIX NTM has been a “must” for a large number of companies for their new kitchen and fitout projects thanks to its innovative and high-tech nature. It is not only a functional material satisfying the large number of day-to-day demands but also provides a new language to reveal its unique identity. The colour range includes a choice of classic timeless colours inspired www.suppliermagazine.com.au

by nature, pearlescent shades with a superb effect on Supermatt surfaces and an exclusive selection of metallic expressions. The stylistic choice for this material with an evocative surface was inspired by nature itself: warm or cool whites from winter landscapes; intense greys of still waters or the pearlesance of thunderous torrents; magnolia and beige that capture the very essence of the terra; the blue and black of star-lit or very dark skies. The thin version of FENIX NTM must be placed onto a substrate and is similar to HPL laminate panels in terms of workability, without needing any special equipment. Edges can be applied to the material using two different methods: using 1.2mm thick FENIX NTM with polyurethane glue or using industrial edging systems, with ABS edges or polymer material, either with traditional methods, new laser systems or hot air systems.â—?

Determined to respect the natural beauty of the tree, SCM Group Australia designed the slab table so that the raw state of the wood would be conserved. The resulting piece is a magnificent slab table more than 8 metres long which will be kept as a showpiece in the SCM Sydney showroom. â—?

Slab Table on Show at SCM R-Evolution Expo In the tradition of bespoke SCM creations, a unique piece of furniture was on display for the first time at the recent SCM R-Evolution exhibition in Sydney. The centrepiece of the exhibition was an 8-metre slab table made from a recovered Sequoia tree. Ian Dolan of Recycled Timbers created the slab table from a Californian Redwood Sequoia tree, which was recovered from the Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens after being struck by lightning. Deemed a safety risk to Garden visitors, Recycled Timbers removed the

tree remnants and had it broken into three pieces for easy removal to the Recycled Timbers factory. One piece was used to make the slab table for the SCM Group Australia Sydney showroom, and the other pieces will be used to create unique furniture pieces. The Californian Redwood is a slow growing softwood and is one of the largest trees in the world with some having a life span of between 1200 – 1800 years, a height of 115.5 meters and up to 7.9 meters in diameter.

SCM Australia Celebrates Anniversary SCM Australia was launched at AWISA in Melbourne one year ago so it’s ‘Happy first Birthday’ SCM Australia. To mark this important event SCM held an open house at their Sydney premises in September that drew large crowds, eager to see the acceptance and growth of the company over the last twelve months. The news is all good with a reported 27% increased turnover; 25% new staff, all in the service area; expansion of the service hotline and an internal software upgrade due by the end of 2017 to support SCM’s after sales team.

Nine million dollars of stock Australia-wide now means that sales and spare parts will be more readily available and SCM Australia’s service team will be able to spend more time with their customers; something that Lee Gabbett says Australia’s ‘mature’ industry demands. He said “We’ve implemented changes to our service to provide the best possible support to SCM machine users throughout Australia. It’s a process of continuous improvement that will always be part of our philosophy.” Since 1952 SCM has been producing some of the World’s most long-lasting wood working machines. The L’invincibile brand adorns many rugged machines still in use in Australia and around the World. SCM has come a long way since then when it was one of the earliest wood working machine

manufacturers. Acquiring many top Italian brands such as DMC sanders; Morbidelli CNC machines; Olimpic and Stefani edge banders and more recently a controlling percentage of the German HG Grimme plastic machine manufacturing company; SCM has grown to become one of the major suppliers of machinery for many industries. On display in Sydney were machinery for solid and panel wood working and aluminium window, door and other industries. SCM Australia sells the FOM range of aluminium processing equipment. What sets FOM apart from their competitors is the ability to look after all areas of the aluminium window and door trade. From small machines on display such as the ‘Sika’ Plus and ‘Panda’ saws; the ‘Calco’ copy router and the Mistral milling machine to the

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

‘Blitz’ double-head sawing machine and the ‘Dali’ fouraxis machining centre plus all the accessories you need; SCM offers a complete service to the aluminium processing industry. FOM is highly advanced in all areas of aluminium processing technology all the way up to complete automated production lines. SCM’s range of traditional wood working machines could be described as legendary. Starting in 1952, some machines are still working today and if any machines were to find their way into a museum of technology it should include

SCM. Static machines are available for the many uses found in the wood trades from hobby users to heavy industrial. It’s ‘Minimax’ for hobby users offering low-cost with the reliability of the SCM brand. Step up to the ‘Nova’ range of light industrial machines with manual adjustments or the heavier ‘Class’ range with electric adjustments and digital readouts. For the ultimate in quality the L’invincibile range offers ultra-heavy duty construction with features like double-tilt saw; large capacity cut and Bluetooth settings of their sliding table saw.

The latest technology is in the area of automation and SCM had this covered with their ‘Flexstore’ board and inventory management system. In this display it demonstrated the sorting of panels into the store whilst keeping a beam saw and CNC nesting machine operating without any stops for materials. The system is set to prioritise the feeding of as many machines as are connected to the store. The rest of the time it’s sorting new boards, or existing boards into job lots for the machinery. It works overnight, even in the dark to ensure the machines never stop and all without an operator present. SCM already have five systems installed in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. Edge-Banders are machines that SCM are particularly keen to make sure are the best that Australia can get. So much that the sales team at SCM Australia work with SCM technicians in Italy to build machines that particularly suits our working conditions. The two machines ‘designed’ for Australian and American conditions in nesting applications are the K360 and K560 models and both were in stock, ready for delivery. The K360 is the more compact of the two and the K560 is capable of the option of the air-fusion zero-edge technology. Also on display was the ‘Solution md’ from Stefani for companies making dozens of kitchens every week. Of note at SCM in Sydney was the ‘Sigma’ Prima 67 beam saw. A CNC nesting machine is efficient but has a limited sheet output and can be highly inefficient with re-work and small custom 30 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

jobs. Beam saws are making a bit of a comeback due to the recent new vertical boring and routing machines and the ‘Startech’ NC drilling machine that makes re-work and small jobs easy to do. It was interesting to see the entry-level Sigma machine working seamlessly with the Flexstore inventory management system; proof that every SCM machine has the technology for integration. SCM offers a complete range of CNC processing centres and in Sydney these included the ‘Pratica’ compact nesting machine. Originally called ‘Pratix’ and re-named due to new developments SCM has made with this popular machine; the Pratica can be loaded from all sides, has all the European safety equipment without the need for safety mats and as a gantry-machine is very stable for high-speed nesting. A great feature of the machine design is that it only needs

minor servicing every thousand hours of operation; about half as often as most other brands. In sync with the SCM tradition of wood; the central meeting area showcased a superb Californian Redwood slab table. Felled in Australia due to damage, the tree was worked by an SCM customer into fine furniture. Lee Gabbett was able to acquire a slab from this magnificent specimen that will be seen at future shows within Australia; possibly at AWISA next year. Talking over a pizza and an Italian beer at the table; Lee said “We wanted to celebrate all we’ve achieved over the first year as SCM Group Australia. This exhibition is a great opportunity to get together with our clients and to say thanks.” Lee says “There’s never been a more exciting time to be a manufacturer of windows; doors or furniture in Australia. The state of

the industry is very good with growth in the building industry all up the East Coast of Australia. New window and door ratings may need new machines and tooling and wooden buildings are also becoming very popular World-wide and also in Australia.” Lee sees the future for SCM in technologies like the ‘Lean-Cell 4.0’ shown at the recent Ligna fair where robots feed and sort panels without human intervention. “To compete against the rest of the World; reducing labour costs is one of the most important factors” says Lee. “The Lean-Cell 4.0 recently won the ‘visionary award’ at the recent AWFS show in Las Vegas so we know it’s what the industry is looking for” he said. The birthday ‘party’ was a success and SCM Australia is set to build on 65 years of tradition, giving the industry exactly what it needs to get the job done. So it’s “Happy Birthday SCM Australia.”●

Nikpol:

The Only Constant is Change The industry knows the Nikpol brand for many different products. It may be cabinet hardware; drawers or wire-ware. It could be appliances or lighting or it could be cabinet doors. It may be the comprehensive range of decorative products; lightweight panels; made-toorder worktops or innovative J-handles. In fact for over forty years the interior joinery and cabinet trades have come to rely on Nikpol to supply the highest quality products at very competitive prices. Everyone knows Nikpol, often for very different reasons but that’s all about to change. Over the last eighteen months the people at Nikpol have been putting together a new promotion to bring all their products into alignment; 32 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

“What we thought we were internally; will now be on display to all our customers” says Anastasia Parlamentas, Nikpol’s sales manager. Ana is a qualified interior designer and says “Nikpol stands for leading design; quality products and surprisingly competitive pricing. Our ‘One Brand’ campaign will define who we are today.” Nikpol understands the application of their high-end, premium products; they are focused on design; a fair price and service. Nikpol was formed in the 1970’s by Nick and Poly Nikolakakis, hence the name. Originally supplying solid timber doors to the cabinet trade, Nick learned early on about the importance of quality when timber doors he brought in

from the Philippines turned out to be faulty. Nick looked after his clients back then and also started making doors here in Australia. Now every product in Nikpol’s extensive range is either made in Australia or sourced from the most reputable, quality-focused suppliers from around the World. Over the years Nikpol has also made and supplied vinyl-wrapped doors and over time added hardware, post-formed worktops and a range of decorative products for the widest range of end uses. Today Nikpol sources and supplies a complete range of products for the joinery and cabinet trades. Ana said “Nikpol is all about innovation. We like to think that the extra time and effort we put in ensures our customers get exactly what they want. Our worktops fabricated for the Australian market are available in 38mm and 20mm thicknesses and feature low formaldehyde to F**** (four star) rating and a 2.5mm radius on the 20mm top that’s not easy to manufacture, but looks like a stone benchtop.” Other Nikpol

Staircase Construction with Augmented Reality Almost everyone has heard of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) these days. Compass Software, one of the world leaders in software development for the staircase manufacturing industry, has already integrated VR glasses into the software for some time now. This technology makes it possible to present staircase designs virtually. The staircase, but also doors,

windows, furniture, etc. can be displayed in the virtual reality. However, the new trend is augmented reality! Compass Software utilize the Microsoft HoloLens to make the AR technology possible. When using the AR glasses, the user is able to see his or her real surroundings and at the same time it is possible to project virtual elements, e.g. staircases, into this

reality. The AR glasses are an immense help for sales, since customers are able to see the virtual staircase in the actual room. Furthermore, the visualization helps to avoid construction mistakes at an early stage. Next to their versatile software solutions for staircase and timber construction, the company also presented their new

development for the utilization of augmented reality at this year's LIGNA in Nuremberg, Germany. Visitors had the opportunity to test out the Microsoft HoloLens (AR glasses) at the booth. This opportunity drove many staircase builders to the booth, who then had the opportunity to experience virtual staircases on a real to size scale on the show floor.â—?

time and money with highly accurate yields from board materials because it uses mathematical algorithms developed by researchers at the University of Vienna that ‘looks’ at over 100,000 possible optimised solutions in just a few seconds. There will be no doubt that the solution you are offered is the best possible. COBUS is a complete CAD-CAM software product where your imagination is the only limitation. SafeCode’s Natalie Gray says “If you can imagine it, COBUS can build it.” Developed in Germany, the software links to every known brand of CNC machine and is highly proficient with all wood working applications such as doors and windows; stairs; worktops; caravans and boat building. The things you have seen at exhibitions like automatic suction cup positioning; nesting; 3D simulations; 3D machining; parametric programming and even the output of G-code if you want it are of course all possible with COBUS. And if this wasn’t enough; SafeCode have a product developed in Australia for

parts management. ICB is software that sits between CAD (design) and CAM (manufacturing) for nesting in either true-form or rectangular nests; it’s your choice. This program is one of only a few that is capable of both. ICB is a post-optimisation software package that gives you complete control over your nested layouts because it’s the little things that add up to big losses. ICB is a highly flexible program made for Australian manufacturers that allows you to customise your nests to better suit your needs. It also has multiple labelling, reporting, and importing options. IJSPLUS also sits under the SafeCode umbrella and this name is an acronym for ‘Integrated Joinery Solutions’ that offers the TopSolid’Wood design software from the French Missler Company. In addition to software, SafeCode also offers services in asset finance and systems solutions; while their parent company LeasePLUS Group provides novated leasing and salary packaging. SafeCode also develops websites for both desktop

computers and mobile devices; develops apps to support their services and offers IT infrastructure systems, but it’s their software that is the focus of this article. SafeCode offers the complete suite of design, manufacturing and management software and is able to tailor a solution for every different manufacturer. Most of the programs are available in various levels so it’s possible to tailor a solution from several programs that meets the very specific needs of your business. Norman Kurta is CEO of SafeCode and has a wealth of industry experience. He says “Our aim is to be the market leader. Our focus is mainly on support because we recognise this has been an issue for the industry for many years. All our people work directly for us; we don’t use agents so our customers always talk to the Australian supplier.” The advent of automated manufacturing using CNC machines is coming to a new age with Industry 4.0 and software will be the main driver of this change. It doesn’t have to be difficult; you just need the right partner. ●

Building Companies are at ‘High Risk’ of Failure as Chinese Investors Retreat: Report A Brisbane-based construction company linked to a massive Chinese building business is on the brink of collapse in another sign that Queensland’s building industry is struggling. Rimfire Constructions had its building licence cancelled by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) in July and is currently seeking a court-approved scheme of arrangement to pay its creditors after months of cashflow problems. It could be the next in a string of high profile Queensland construction

industry collapses this year, amid fears that an apartment glut combined with a slowdown in Chinese investment will hit the state’s property market hard. The good news for now is that the national insolvency trend is currently downwards for construction, with Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) Insolvency Statistics reporting 1481 failures, down 5.9% since June 2016. However, rising risks in the sector are apparent in a new report from insolvency group SVP Partners 2017 Commercial Risk Outlook and

Queensland looks set to be hardest hit. The Courier Mail says there have been more than 30 insolvencies this year in Queensland, with building workers and suppliers owed more than $100 million. Nationally, construction tops the list of the analysis by SVP Partners of businesses at “high to severe” financial risk. The company believes 3.1% of the sector – 2026 companies – sit in that band, with nearly half, 931, in the $1 million -$10 million turnover bracket. A further 23.2% of construction companies 46 are at medium risk.

Construction has been a vital component of economic activity in the wake of the mining boom, creating jobs and providing much-needed housing in Australia’s major cities, as interest rates fell and Chinese investment dollars flowed. But the boom has prompted concern among economists and market observers that the supply of apartments is simply too high to meet demand. SVP Partners director Matthew Bookless said the figures were based on a wide range of data points and the drop in existing insolvencies – overall there’s been a 33% drop in company failures according to ASIC – could be explained by the more lenient approach taken by the Australian Tax Office when it’s owed money. He believes creditors are being more lenient and are not as willing to reach the wind up phase as they once were. “A big driver of this is what the ATO does,” he told Business Insider. “They took a different approach to last year and have been more willing to consider and accept payment arrangements. “They’re preferring that method at the moment over and above issuing hundreds of winding up applications against businesses.” But Bookless fears that won’t change the ultimate outcome for hundreds of companies. “When you look at the data that our Commercial Risk Outlook shows, I would have real questions over whether this approach is working for creditors and whether businesses will be 46 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

able to work their way out of it or it’s just putting off the inevitable.” There are other factors also coming into play, from changes in state government legislation – Queensland introduced a 3% charge on foreign property buyer surcharge last year, in NSW it’s 8% and 7% in Victoria – and China’s own stricter rules on foreign investment, which have had a direct impact on Rimfire. Rimfire was originally set up in 2013 by Lendlease’s former head of apartment construction Adam Moore, project engineer Cameron and Danny Cain. Cain has been writing as a director to sub-contractors and suppliers seeking payment since May, but has struggled to raise the finances required. Last year the government-owned China Railway Construction Group, the world’s third-largest construction company, took a majority stake in the business to create CRCG Rimfire, a joint venture for residential and infrastructure projects in Australia and Asia. The JV has been working on two luxury apartment projects, Omega and Lume, in Brisbane. Cain told creditors on July 19 that he’s spend two days in discussions with CRCG, which is dual-listed and worth an estimated $28 billion, “seeking their support to provide a solution to the company’s cashflow problems”. The discussions “went well”, he said, but needed approval from head office, which would take 10 business days. His next letter on creditors on August 15 announced plans to launch a scheme of arrangement

to attempt to satisfy creditor claims. “We believe this is the best opportunity to maximise the return to creditors,” he wrote. Cain said they were still trying to raise additional capital and other funds from debtors to finalise the payment offer. He told The Courier-Mail that their Chinese partners couldn’t help with a bail out because of Chinese government restrictions on overseas investments. Business Insider has contacted Cain for comment. Rimfire’s travails are just the latest in a string of problems leaving Queensland building workers, suppliers and homeowners out of pocket following multiple company collapses. Queensland One Homes went into liquidation last month owing $3 million to 133 creditors and the Gold Coast Bulletin reports that the QBCC investigated the company’s finances three times, in December 2015, August 2016 and January 2017, but did not find a reason to cancel its licence. The regulator was warned by several people about the business and a related company, Empire Constructions, is now under investigation for alleged illegal phoenix activities. The Bulletin reports a creditor’s meeting for Queensland One Homes was told funds and contracts from Paul Travis Callender’s failed business had been transferred to Empire Constructions, which is run by his wife. Tweed Heads-based Ware Building Pty Ltd, which was constructing 82 townhouses for the Gold Coast’s Parklands development, part of the Commonwealth

Games athletes village, went into voluntary liquidation last week. Claims by the project’s head developer, Grocon, that Ware had paid all its debts were disputed by several companies claiming they were owed up to $200,000. A number of building companies on the Gold Coast have gone into liquidation this year, starting with the Cullen Group, which collapsed over Christmas owing around $20 million, while building the Boheme apartments complex in Robina. Batir Pty Ltd collapsed soon after owing $2.1 million with the Rainbow Beach ambulance station under construction. Bluestone Constructions also failed owing at least $6.8 million as it worked on the Waterford apartments in Bundall. Another high profile collapse was Bloomer Constructions, which its ASXlisted owner, Onterran, put into voluntary administration in April owing $14 million to around 600 creditors. The move closed dozens of building sites across the state. Bloomer’s creditors subsequently voted for a deed of company arrangement (DOCA) rather than liquidation in the hope of recouping more funds. Onterra’s shares had been in voluntary suspension since the beginning of the year as it deals with the winding up of Bloomer and another business, McGrath Modular, winds down. On June 30, the company told the ASX “the formalities of entering into the DOCA are in the process of being completed and a market update will be provided once done”. ASX suspension www.suppliermagazine.com.au

The company was praised by the building industry for its efforts to pay contractors, but this week ASX suspended Onterra from official quotation along with dozens of other companies for failure to pay listing fees. The failure of Bloomer came 12 months after another Brisbane builder, Trac Construction, went into liquidation owing $19.7 million to 330 creditors. A report into the failure in May this year concluded that unsecured creditors would receive any funds. Brisbane apartment builder CMF Projects collapsed in May this year owing 225 creditors $12 million. The SVP Partners 2017 Commercial Risk Outlook report paints a bleaker picture for Queensland’s

construction industry than the rest of the country. The state figures for potential business collapses over the next year are higher than the national average with 3.4% – 444 companies at high to severe risk of financial failure. That figure has increased by around 13%, or 51 companies over the last six months. The regional breakdown is even more alarming, 3.7% (84 companies) on the Gold Coast, and 3.9% (150 companies) in Brisbane in the high to severe risk range. The vast majority of those businesses sit in the $1 million-$10 million turnover bracket, although in Brisbane SVP Partners has also identified 34 in the $10m-$50m band, two at $50m-$100m

turnover and even one in the $100m-$500m bracket. Bookless said there are regional factors at play in the differences. “The Gold Coast, for example, has the Commonwealth Games as an obvious influencer for a number of industries,” he said. In Brisbane, “the public view now is there is potentially an oversupply of apartments”, while regulatory changes, both here and abroad “are likely to have a flow on effect to property values and therefore construction levels”. “It sounds logical that those changes will add to the challenges for the construction industry,” Bookless said. The Gold Coast Bulletin reports that local industry

veteran Steve Marais, managing director of Condev Construction, has warned that this year’s collapses are “the tip of the iceberg” and “next year is going to be a bloodbath” for mid-tier builders. Marais told the Bulletin that he expects “half a dozen” companies would collapse in 2018. “I think it’s going to take a big one to go for people to see how distressed builders are,” he said. The Queensland government is currently looking at introducing new laws that require builders and contractors to deposit funds in project bank accounts to pay subcontractors on time. OPEN DAY

Through feed CNC with KDT.

Your Success is their Benchmark Early September and winter had just rolled into spring. It was cold and wet in Melbourne but that didn’t stop dozens of companies from visiting the LEDA Machinery open day in their new premises in Dandenong South. Opened in January this year, the new facility is half as big again as the previous showroom and store. It was designed to offer guests a pleasant experience and to show their leading brands in the best possible way. Power and air connect to the machines through the floor, giving the showroom an impressive, open feel. LEDA Victoria’s Peter Schilling said “We’ve been in business 25 years now; we have a great range of machinery and we’re making a big impact on the industry. We’ve run a few of these before but we’ve never had so many visitors as this time.” LEDA handles many great brands but the most wellknown name is KDT. Originally made in ‘heavy-industry’ South Korea; the company moved to China and now has several

48 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

production plants around the country. It’s well-known in the industry that most, if not all machinery producers have production facilities in China and many parts for machines assembled in Europe come from China anyway. KDT is as professional an operator as any in the Country, even those managed from Europe. They make most of their own parts so they control not only the design of their machines but

the quality. This is evident in the fact that LEDA have been supplying the KDT brand in Australia for around ten years and customers are coming back for new models. Return business is normal practice at LEDA with the KDT brand. Any group of manufacturers standing around and having a chat about edge banders in particular will own; or know someone who owns a KDT edge bander. It’s a fact of life

that these machines are very well-known in the industry with one person being overheard to say at the open day, that he would be trading in his European machine for the KDT. “They’re not complicated; they’re built rugged like a tank; have all the good stuff so your panels don’t come out scratched and the parts are well-priced. I can replace my glue tank for half the price of a similar machine from Europe

Peter and his crew.

and I can do it myself” he said. KDT was introduced to Australia through Colin Clisby at LEDA. He says “KDT is now a public listed company and the share price has gone through the roof in just over three months! They’re a company of continuous improvement and innovation. Their factory is amongst the cleanest and best in the country; it’s a professional outfit using the World’s leading heavy equipment to manufacture their KDT machines. Originally from South Korea, renowned for their heavy industry where the World’s biggest ships are made; KDT has learnt www.suppliermagazine.com.au

a lot about putting together a machine that can go the distance and our customers have proved that they can do just that. It’s sort of like Apple©; designed in California but made in China.” The Melbourne LEDA open house had ten edge banders on display including the KDT-396J with angled edge banding, and the KDT465 with automatic panel return. While edge banders are often considered KDT’s strength; their CNC machines are starting to make a big impact. On display was the KN-3 flatbed CNC machine with full safety package; automatic whole-pack infeed table; label printing and outfeed table. For the cabinet maker who needs to do re-work; specials or maybe isn’t quite ready for a full-blown CNC installation; the KN-2309 single-piece flow-through CNC machine may just be the answer. Their CNC machines aren’t only for kitchens but are used in all areas of

furniture making including for complex machining like chair components. Peter said “Our vision was to be where we are today. We wanted a showroom that would do justice to our machinery. It’s professional, it’s big and we can set up to give our customers a practical demonstration of what our equipment is capable of.” For the serious cabinet maker KDT is regarded as a mainstream brand, especially with their award-winning edge banders. They sell to all parts of the World and will soon be available in the American market. “There’s a lot of interest in our range and we’ve had people from interstate come along to have a look. We’ve got two big edge banders going out next week, both to the same major board supplier; these people know what they need and they’ve chosen KDT and LEDA to get the job done” he says. KDT’s motto is ‘Your Success is our Benchmark’ and if the last ten years is anything to go by, the mark has been well set. ●

Leitz ProfilCut Q Diamond Showcased The new replaceable knife cutter head system ProfilCut Q Diamond sets pioneering new standards in machine processing. ProfilCut Q Diamond is a unique combination of an ultralight aluminium tool body and resharpenable profile knives. This enables constant diameter diamond cutting, guaranteeing higher efficiency and maximum productivity and profitability. This advanced technical innovation begins with a new diamond cutting edge made from the hardest material on earth: polycrystalline diamond (PKD). This ensures the precise processing of high-end and abrasive materials with exact repeatability and no loss of performance. After repeated sharpening, the diameter and profile of the edge remains unchanged. ProfilCut Q Diamond can be sharpened five times, and with a 20 times longer performance time provides significant cost savings in comparison to disposable carbide systems. The performance continues with the dynamics of the tool body’s aluminium light weight construction and the clamping system has been designed for maximum peripheral speed. The coating effectively reduces impact, friction and heat generation. Even at a maximum cutting speed of 120 meters per second, the system produces first-class finish quality due to reduced vibration. The increased speed also allows faster feed rates with the same number of teeth, enabling higher productivity. The option of uncomplicated knife change in the set is another unique selling point of ProfilCut Q Diamond. The Leitz engineers also have included a handling benefit when designing the new ProfilCut Q Diamond. The diamond knives can be exchanged by the user on site. The knives are independently clamped axially and radially free of tolerances and without adjustment devices. The clamping system ensures precise repeatability after each knife change. This saves in both time and costs. Even for complex toolsets, all edges are accessible without any problems as the tool is not required to be taken out of the machine. ●

Tiomos Hinge System by Grass Revolutionises Furniture Design Tiomos Hidden: the hinge becomes invisible with the development of the Tiomos hinge system, GRASS has written a new chapter in the history of furniture design. With the concealed Tiomos Hidden hinge, which was launched at interzum 2017, GRASS has added another component that makes it possible to move doors elegantly and almost invisibly. "When we talk about minimalism, we assume that technology is becoming more and more intelligent and its functions more and more comfortable – but also less and less visible." This is how Andreas Marosch, Head of Marketing at GRASS, describes the company's approach. "Customers want to express their personality with personalised furniture design; the technical components should be designed so that they take a back seat behind the furniture design or provide a specific aesthetic aspect in addition to the pure function." The latest product from the Tiomos series is a perfect example of this product philosophy: it really takes a back seat behind the furniture, even better, it becomes one with the furniture and thus becomes almost invisible. The concealed Tiomos Hidden hinge is recessed in the cabinet and thereby is flush with the surfaces of the door and of the inside wall of the piece of furniture. However, in terms of functionality, it certainly is not second-best compared to its visible colleagues: it is unusually strong, and can be adjusted in three dimensions. Tiomos Hidden features a damping mechanism in the closing action and allows for an opening angle of 105°. The minimum door thickness required is 18 millimetres. Tiomos Hidden combines functionality with design and, with its fully concealed installation, takes second place behind the furniture. Furthermore, with the new Night surface finish, Tiomos Hidden responds to the trend towards dark, high-quality surfaces. The hinge, which will be launched at interzum 2017, is also available in a nickel-plated version.● www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Sprucing Up Your Deck Prep for Contemporary Outdoor Living Spring with Cabot’s by Polytec With the warmer weather and months of al fresco entertaining just around the corner, Cabot’s has introduced its fastest deck coating system ever – Finish in 1 Day – to speed up spring deck prep. With research revealing 52 per cent of deck owners1 take more than a day to complete the coating process, and 1 in 5 have never coated their deck1, Cabot’s three step Finish in 1 Day system responds to a national demand for more time-efficient coating. As the name suggests, the Cabot’s Finish in 1 Day system turns what is usually a six-week process into a one-day job, thanks to a series of new product developments. Designed to enhance and protect the natural look of exterior timber, popular Cabot’s Aquadeck decking oil now has a new formula, revolutionising the recoat time from two hours to just one hour. This makes it one of the fastest drying products of its kind on the shelves.

58 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

Cabot’s recommends teaming Cabot’s Aquadeck with Cabot’s Deck Clean and Cabot’s New Timber Prep - an innovative new product that allows deck owners to skip the four to six weeks of weathering typically recommended for new timber. “We know that many deck owners struggle to dedicate time to maintaining their deck, despite it often becoming the hub of the home during the warmer months,” says James Fisher, Senior Brand Manager for Cabot’s. “With this in mind, the Cabot’s Finish in 1 Day system has been developed to make sure deck owners are able to spend more time enjoying their deck than they do caring for it.” In just three simple steps for new bare timber, or two for preweathered/grey timber, deck owners can achieve a great finish that can be easily touched up as required throughout the year.●

SawGear Tables by TigerStop to Have More Robust Leg Structure SawGear, the highly portable, automatic lineal cutting system made by TigerStop, has added a more robust leg structure to its optional jobsite tables. The new table legs were launched September 5th and provide increased stability. The new SawGear legs branch in two directions from a direct connection point. They are connected at the top to the table with a sheet metal faceplate. The tables come in three different lengths to accommodate the 8-, 12-, or 16-foot working length SawGear. “SawGear’s are being used on jobsites as well as in workshops and heavy industrial locations, so it made sense to strengthen the table leg design,” said Simon Spykerman, TigerStop’s Director of Marketing. “Rather than a single stand with tripod,

the new legs branch in two directions from a direct connection point and provide even more stability.” SawGear Table design incorporates a hinge system with the new, collapsible leg structure, making the tables easily transportable, simple to level and quick to set-up and break down. Also available are customizable in-feed tables. SawGear easily attaches to: either side of a miter saw, chop saw, double miter saw, vertical panel saw, and can even be integrated onto an Ironworker sheer or punch. SawGear is an automated stop. Simply enter lengths into SawGear’s keypad, eliminating the need for repeated measuring, which saves time, reduces material waste and vastly increases efficiency. SawGear provides automatic and accurate length measuring in the shop or on the jobsite. ●

Striebig Vertical Panel Saws Outperform Vertical Panel saws are one of the most under rated machines in todays market. Widely used throughout Europe and many other countries due to the space saving foot print, as well as the possibility of stack-cutting, they are found in many small and medium workshops. In the US and Africa, they are the preferred machine for processing Corean.

www.suppliermagazine.com.au

But in Australia they have long been considered to be just rough-cut saw. However with advances in technologies, Striebig Vertical Panel saws can now out-perform many conventional sliding table panel saws. Some models can be equipped with a Scoring unit for Melamine, making every cut the final cut. Sheet size

of 3.6 x 1.8m can easy be processed, since the operator does nothave to support the weight of the panel. Another popular use is for the processing of Composite Materials like

Alucobond. When fitted with Grooving Accessories, straight grooving of panels can be done at a speed almost double to conventional CNC equipment. When equipped with the correct blade for the application, Striebig Vertical Panel saws can be used for cutting most non-Ferrous materials like MDF, Particle Board, CFC, Plastic Sheeting, Polycarbonate, Corean, Gator Board, and many other materials. Striebig Vertical Panel saws are supplied by VilleTec, who is the Australian sole agent for Striebig since 1997. â—?

Are You Tired of Chasing Customers? Since its inception 10 years ago, DVS Kitchens has been growing at a steady pace. Danny Soklevski grew the business from a small premises in the Melbourne suburb of Campbellfield to a purpose built factory in Craigieburn. Each year has seen double digit growth and expansion. But with growing comes growing pains. Like many small cabinet making businesses, Danny knew that to take his business to the next level meant working smarter, not harder. Danny’s initial investigations proved that an easy to use nesting machine, with simple software to drive it, was the solution for DVS Kitchens. After looking at all the options available to him, Danny decided the best machine for him was the SCM Pratika 310, supplied and serviced by SCM Group Australia. 62 | SupplierSept/Oct 2017

Machine & Software - All Included “We’ve had an SCM edgebander for years and it has served us well, so we we’re well aware of the SCM brand and SCM Group Australia”, said Danny. “After looking at what was available we decided the SCM Pratika 310 was the best machine available to us. Another positive was that all our machinery and software could be serviced by the one company”.

More Jobs – Faster! One of the main areas of improvement provided by the SCM Pratika 310 was the time taken for each job. Interestingly, the time savings were not only experienced in the factory, but also in the office. Preparation of cutting lists, designing time and inventory control were all reduced significantly. The second flow on effect was the increased levels of accuracy. Each

machined piece was the right size every time – resulting in a significant saving in assembly times. Danny estimates that production output has doubled since the Pratika 310 was installed – without any change to the number of employees.

Compact & Safe The SCM Pratika 310 offers a lot in compact footprint. A unique protection system positioned directly on the machining head allows the operator to work closely to the machine in complete safety. This system eliminates the space required for other safety methods such as fences and laser curtains. The nesting bed can comfortably machine a 2400 x 1200 sheet and has drills in both Y & X directions for added efficiency.

library which can be easily manipulated. Entire cabinets or individual components can be simply adjusted to suit individual jobs and the changes can be saved if required to use at a later stage. Cabinets can then be selected, a cutting list is automatically created, and the job is optimised on sheets and then sent to the machine to be routed. Xcab is even capable of grain direction and grain match machining for jobs that have grain patterned laminate. The Xcab cabinet library software also assists with job costing and material ordering. “It has been money well spent”, says Danny. “The time I save using Xcab allows me more time to work on the business, rather than in the business”. Increasing Demand DVS Kitchens has experienced an unexpected advantage after improving the manufacturing systems in their factory. The increased capacity led to increased

demand – their clients are now approaching them with larger, more detailed jobs – because they know the end product will be on time and built to a high quality. “The SCM Pratika has given DVS Kitchens the ability to meet the demands of our customers,” says Danny. “The investment has meant that DVS Kitchens can commit to larger projects and deliver on time and be competitive on price” Learn more about the Pratika 310, the full range of SCM Nesting Machines and Xcab Software.
