It is my pleasure to welcome you to Belize. As you flip through the pages of this guide, you will be intrigued by the diversity in nature, culture, cuisine, adventure and history. Belize is rich in all of these regardless of which area you choose to explore. We are a small nation in size, but every single corner of the country has the ability to take you to a place you have never experienced before. The friendliness of the people, good food, the ease to travel, the language, great music, the laid-back ambience, sight-seeing, plus the flexibility and short distances, all combined, make your stay fun-filled and action packed. Diving, snorkeling, caves, Maya sites, nature trails, ocean and river kayaking, horseback riding, birding, medicinal trails, butterfly farms, fly-fishing or deep sea trolling, zip-lining, cave-tubing, waterfalls, carnivals, lobster fest, swimming with rays, diving with whale sharks or simply relaxing on a beach or in a jungle hammock, are just some of the adventures to look forward to. For single travelers, couples, entire families or groups of friends traveling together, young or young at heart, destination weddings or honeymooners, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Many hotels not only cater to the leisure traveler but also have facilities to accommodate business meetings, incentive groups, faith or focus groups, student groups, and others. Whether you come to sit back and relax or check something off your bucket list, Belize provides the opportunity to fulfill your every desire. It is a perfect destination for last minute planning, short or extended stays, first timers or some timers. This year marks a new era for traveling to Belize as many international direct flights are now available and the number of hotels, tours and tour operators have increased. Come visit us! The weather is awesome and the memories everlasting!

Leisa Carr-Caceres President, 2014-2017 Belize Hotel Association

Welcome to 8,867 square miles of adventure, cultural diversity, delightful cuisine and stunning views. You planned your vacation to Belize by carefully choosing from a wide collection of charming and welcoming hotels and guest houses that suit any budget. As the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation of Belize, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to our little corner of the world. We, Belizeans, are extremely proud of our ethnically and culturally diverse country, and equally proud of the many natural wonders that can be found here. Our skilled tour-guides are trained to escort adventurous visitors around the country, whether by road or boat, to swim with the fish at Hol Chan or to guide you carefully through the jaguar reserve. Our Blue Hole attracts many divers annually and sky-diving into it is scheduled to be a major sport for thrill-seekers starting February 2017. Visiting Belize is more about communicating with the people, who are the real stars of your experience. The Maya population thrives in the Toledo District and these humble folk take pride in welcoming visitors into their many villages. Dangriga is the cultural capital of the enchanting Garifuna people where the beating of a drum is as familiar as a handshake. Drive through Spanish Lookout in Cayo or Blue Creek in Orange Walk and you are in Mennonite country. DonĘźt be surprised to see a horse and buggy ride by in the most casual and unconcerned manner. No, you are not in Amish country, you are in Belize. I think by now you realized that you have made the right choice for your vacation. Fishing, swimming, night-clubbing or just laying out under a coconut tree are just a few things we did not get to discuss, but I am sure you will discover. Welcome. While you are here relax, enjoy and discover how to be yourself in Belize. It is a pleasure having you with us, and we look forward to future opportunities to welcome you back to our shores. Warm Regards, Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr. Minister of Tourism

Its membership is comprised primarily of accommodation providers including hotels, resorts, lodges, condominiums, educational facilities and home-stays with allied members including tour operators and ancillary businesses that service the hospitality industry. The BHA works diligently to support the sustainable growth of member hotels and the tourism industry in Belize through global marketing initiatives, private and public sector partnerships and training opportunities aimed at increased standards and professional service. The Belize Hotel Association 13 Cork Street, Belize City | PO Box 2480 T: +501-223-0669 | E: bha@btl.net or membership@belizehotels.org. OUR TEAM AT WORK.

THE BELIZE HOTEL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Belize Hotel Association Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 with the purpose to provide educational funding for children of employees working with the BHA member hotels and businesses, who are unable to meet financial obligations for their child's high school or tertiary level education. To date, the BHA has financed, one year of tertiary level education for a student in Belize City, four years of high school to completion for one student in Caye Caulker, and is presently funding a student in Belize City for the past two years, who is now heading into the third year of her high school program. In addition, the BHA scholarship fund has assisted in subsidizing a member hotel's Children's Summer Camp Program in the Cayo District. Thanks to the immeasurable generosity of our members and the local business community who offered gift certificates, cash, gift packages for our raffles/auctions, and through their purchases of our BHA umbrellas, the Belize Hotel Association is pleased to say that we are able to assist more students this year. For more information or to make a donation to the fund, email us at membership@belizehotels.org or call us at +501-223-0669.

ABOUT THE BLUE HOLE

The Great Blue Hole is a large submarine sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70 kilometers from the mainland and Belize City. The hole is circular in shape, over 300 meters across and 125 meters deep. Besides modern-day marine life, this vertical cave contains remnants from its days above water. When much of Earth’s water was sequestered in glaciers, global sea level was lower. During this time, stalactites or “dripstones” formed inside this cave, and those rocks are preserved underwater today. Jacques Cousteau revealed the secrets of the mysterious Blue Hole to millions of viewers in 1971 through the television series The Undersea World of Jaques-Yves Cousteau. Today, dive boats follow the way of the famous Calypso to explore one of the world’s best destinations for scuba diving. Blue Hole Natural Monument is one the seven wonders of Belize’s World Heritage Site. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, which covers a total area of 963 square kilometers, illustrates a classic example of reefs through fringing, barrier, and atoll types. The coastal area of Belize is an outstanding natural system consisting of the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere, offshore atolls, several hundred sand cays, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons and estuaries. The system's seven sites illustrate the evolutionary history of reef development and are a significant habitat for threatened species. The reef extends from the border with Mexico to the north, near the Guatemalan border to the south. The Belize submarine shelf and its barrier reef, represent the world second largest reef system and the largest reef complex in the Atlantic-Caribbean area. Outside the barrier, there are three large atolls: Turneffe Islands, Lighthouse Reef and Glover's Reef. Between the mainland and the barrier reef is an extensive offshore lagoon

which increases in width and depth from north to south. In the north, water depth averages 2-3 meters over a flat, featureless bottom 20 -25 kilometers wide. South of Belize City, the shelf gradually deepens forming a channel between the mainland and the outer platform, reaching a depth of 65 meters in the Gulf of Honduras. The approximately 450 sand and mangrove cays confined within the barrier and atolls range in size from small, ephemeral sand spits to larger, permanent islands capable of sustaining human settlements. The largest of these islands is Ambergris Caye where the village of San Pedro is located. Several PADI dive operators visit Half Moon Caye Natural Monument out of San Pedro, Caye Caulker and Belize City. The Great Blue Hole is a popular spot amongst recreational scuba divers, who are lured by the opportunity to dive in crystal-clear water and meet several species of fish, including giant groupers, nurse sharks and several types of reef sharks such as the Caribbean reef shark and the Blacktip shark. Other species of sharks, like the bull shark and hammerheads, have been reported there, but are not regular sightings. Usually, dive trips to the Great Blue Hole are full-day trips leaving from Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, which include one dive in the Blue Hole and two further dives in nearby reefs.

TURNEFFE ATOLL

Turneffe Atoll offers true world class diving — the visibility often ranges from 100 to 150 feet. The diving sites are considered some of the best in the Western Caribbean. Experience the magnificent wall of Rendezvous, which is abundant with colorful sponges, corals, and marine life.

ARCHEOLOGIST IN BELIZE by Dr. Lisa J. Lucero, Department of Anthropology of the University of Illinois.

Belize is known for its beauty on the sea, in the jungle, and among people. Another amazing part of Belize is its long history—over 10,000 years of human occupation. The most magnificent remains are those left by the Classic Maya (ca. 250-850 CE), who lived in massive civic-ceremonial centers dotted throughout Belize surrounded by 100,000s farmsteads. Many impressive palaces and pyramid temples remain unexplored, while some are well-known, such as Ca’ana at Caracol, the seat for one of the most powerful kingdoms. Kings, royal families, nobles, elites, priests, and artisans lived in centers, while the majority of people farmed the rich agricultural soils found dispersed throughout Belize. Touring around Belize you can witness the majesty of the Classic Maya, as you also see mounds on the landscape that represent hundreds of years of Maya rebuilding in the same place for countless generations. The landscape is also filled with sacred aspects invisible to us—processional pilgrimage routes to sacred portals to the underworld—caves and cenotes (steep-sided sinkhole fed by groundwater). People would visit these places to re-establish their place in the world and to thank or supplicate ancestors and gods during annual drought to ensure the rains would begin at the right time to nourish the fields with their maize, beans and squash seeds. The Maya still live in Belize, but no longer in centers; you can see their resemblance to those in Classic iconography on carved on stelae or painted on ceramic vessels. Their history, like all of ours, continues to change. When traveling throughout Belize, one mostly sees modern buildings, roads, bridges, and so on. But remember that you are driving, walking and hiking in an place rich with history that is ready to be explored. This sweat bath shown below is located c.1500 feet from Cara Blanca Pool 1 where the Maya likely ritually purified themselves before participating in water rites at Pool 1. Its circular construction is relatively rare, but served an important role as part of pilgrimage to sacred places.

The National Institute of Culture and History through the Institute of Archaeology (IA) and the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR) hosts the Belize Archaeology and Anthropology Symposium (BAAS) annually. The symposium features the presentation of scholarly papers by Belizean and international researchers, professionals, students, and aficionados in the fields of History, Archaeology, and Anthropology in Belize.

BELIZE CITY & NORTHERN BELIZE

DID YOU KNOW?

The Northern Region of Belize offers more variety of nature, history and culture than any other districts of Belize. Exotic birds, butterflies of every colour, and an abundance of wildlife team this area of Belize.

NORTHERN BELIZE Approximately 250 species of birds can be found in the Shipstern Nature Reserve, Chan Chich, Rio Bravo Conservation and the Lamanai ruins which include the king vulture, jabiru stork, blue crowned mot-mot, the ocellated turkey, aplomado falcon and the Yucatan jay. Five species of wildcat inhabit the Northern Region of Belize: the jaguar, puma, margay, ocelot and the jaguarondi. This area is also the home for over 250 varieties of orchids and 200 kinds of trees. History and culture breathe richly in Northern Belize. Remains of early Maya settlements can still be found scattered in this area like the site of Cuello outside of Orange Walk; one of the earliest known Maya sites dating from 2500 BC. Cerros, located on a hill overlooking Chetumal Bay, is a late pre-classic trading center. Lamanai, on the New River, has one of the longest occupation periods and is the largest pre-classic structure known in the Maya area. Santa Rita, around which Corozal Town is built, was the ancient capital of Chetumal controlling an area of about 6,000 square kilometers. BELIZE CITY Belize City, although not known for its beaches, offers a colonial charm; the city itself originated as a logging camp and export center for mahogany in the 1600s. Some impressive structures such as the Supreme Court, Government House, the old prison site now converted to the Museum of Belize, and the oldest Anglican Church, St. John’s Cathedral, offer historical city tours.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS • Airboat Tours • Bacalar Chico • Bliss Centre for Performing Arts • Community Baboon & Black Howler Monkey Sanctuary • Corozal Bay • Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary • Goff's Caye Marine Reserve • Government House (Belize City House of Culture) • Maya Sites: Altun Ha, Cerros, La Milpa, Lamanai, and Santa Rita • Museum of Belize • Rio Bravo Management Area & Hill Bank • Sibun River: Snook and Tarpon Fishing • The Belize Zoo

Spacious verandahs in front of the house allow you to relax and let go amidst the soothing embrace of the Caribbean breezes.Only 100 meters from the Caribbean Sea, 12 miles from largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, 25 miles from the sites of the Mayan Civilization, and a 10 minute walk from the city center (directly across the street from the Radisson Hotel). Our colonial heritage and ambience are faithfully preserved in all of our sixteen guestrooms. Each is individually color coordinated with a host of tasteful and comfortable appointments. The look and feel of yesterday with today’s modern conveniences makes The Great House Belize’s most desirable “outpost” away from home. From polished pine floor to fresh fruit on arrival, our guestrooms and our staff let you know you made the right choice.

CAYES & ATOLLS

DID YOU KNOW?

The difference between a coral reef and an atoll is a coral reef consists of a limestone structure whereas an atoll is a specific type of coral that forms in a circular structure. In the Caribbean, there are only 4 atolls: Banco Chinchorro, Turneffe Islands, Lighthouse Reef, and Glover’s Reef. All but the Banco Chinchorro are in Belizean waters.

ISLANDS AND CAYES Over 200 white sand islands, locally known as “cayes” (pronounced “keys”) dot the turquoise waters off the length of Belize’s coast, each unique whether by its location - inside the reef, on the reef or, on an atoll outside the magnificent Belize Barrier Reef. The larger islands in the north support charming towns and villages while elsewhere on the 185 mile barrier reef, smaller private islands provide exclusive getaways. AMBERGRIS CAYE Ambergris Caye, the most northerly and largest of islands off the coast of Belize is a base for world-class diving and snorkeling just offshore. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is home to large schools of colorful fish and its clear, shallow waters and prevailing winds are ideal for fishing, windsurfing, sailing and kite surfing. Hotels, condominiums and vacation rentals in San Pedro Town and along the island offer an eclectic choice of accommodations that are complemented by a mixture of sophisticated international cuisine and traditional Belizean food served in beachside restaurants and local cafes. The streets of San Pedro bustle with local artists and craftsmen and contribute to the captivating atmosphere.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS • Fishing: Punta Ycacos Lagoon • Gladden Spit: Whale Sharks • Half Moon Caye National Monument • Hol Chan Marine Reserve • Lighthouse, Turneffe and Glover’s Reef • Red-Footed Booby Birds of Half Moon Caye • Shark Ray Alley • South Water Marine Reserve • Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary

CAYE CAULKER The epitome of the “laid back island” lifestyle, Caye Caulker is located 21 miles northeast of Belize City and the second largest inhabited island in Belize. “Front Street” is lined with brightly-colored wooden houses interspersed with shops, restaurants and small hotels; friendly islanders will make you feel at home.
