2020-2021 basketball is going to be a ‘Weird Year’

BY IVAN SANDERS STAR SPORTS EDITOR ivan.sanders@elizabethton.com

W

ell, here we stand again on the cusp of another high school basketball season in Carter and Johnson County and it may be one for the history books as teams will be facing some unique circumstances. In March of 2020, the COVID pandemic hit and prevented a local team in the Hampton Bulldogs from going to a state tournament they had worked so hard to reach. Fast forward nearly eight months, and the pandemic fight still rages as football made it through a season of adaptability and now basketball is set to tip off. In what most coaches have already termed a ‘Weird Year’ local hoops teams hoop teams are keeping their fingers and toes crossed to make it through a complete season with a lot of unknowns going forward. Yet, it is their sport – the one that they love to participate and compete in and every coach and administration will do everything possible to make sure their student-athletes have that opportunity. Unlike football, basketball teams doesn’t have the number of players to draw from and a simple case or contact tracing for COVID could result in a player missing possibly up to a quarter of their season in games.

Teams will be banking on what they know of their players heading into the season as the summer camps were wiped out and with no scrimmages, it will be like playing a game blindfolded against an opponent. But every coach will also tell you that they are ready to set down the X’s and O’s on the clipboards and the kids are anxious and revved up to get going in a new season. For that reason, the Elizabethton Star is once again proud to bring you the 20202021 Basketball Guide for local teams featuring coach interviews, team photos, rosters, schedules, and cheer squads for the upcoming season. This endeavor wouldn’t be possible without the assistance of Tomahawk Sports Editor Tim Chambers, photographers Dawn Lambert and Amy Banner, and the creative genius of Robin Johnson who did a phenomenal job of putting the guide together. We also appreciate all those who invested in advertising to help bring the final piece into reality for all of our readers and our advertising team for working tirelessly in reaching out to those advertisers. One man cannot do everything – it takes an army! So without further ado, we hope you enjoy the Elizabethton Basketball Guide for the 2020-2021 season. Sincerely, Ivan Sanders Star Sports Editor

get to play number one and then we are going to do everything that we can to keep plugging in kids. “By the end of the year, you may have some freshmen stepping in and some younger guys that you can count on. We have some guys that are new to the team that may be able to come in and contribute.” Honeycutt feels like for his team to be successful, there is one major thing that needs to occur. “If we don’t have good team chemistry and team culture, I think that we are going to struggle but if those guys buy in and play for one another and do the things they have been doing thus far and keep working hard every day,” Honeycutt stated. As far as the league goes, the Cyclone skipper sees East and Unicoi Co. at the top due to having a lot of returners, and then from there, it’s jumbled. “I like to think everyone else is even until someone separates themselves,” he said. “We have to get a lot better and kids have to grow up for us to be successful.”

Lucas Honeycutt Head Coach

020 has already been a year filled with more questions than answers from different aspects of life that even reaches down to high school athletics. For basketball coaches like head coach Lucas Honeycutt of the Elizabethton Cyclones boys team, that hasn’t been more evident than in trying to pencil in how his team will look in the 2020-2021 season. “There are a lot of question marks with not having a summer and being able to go and participate in team camp,” Honeycutt said during the basketball media day. “We got basically a whole new roster this year. There are a lot of kids coming in from playing junior varsity with minimal experience coming into varsity games.” Thankfully for Honeycutt, there are a few players that he can lean on for leadership. “Two guys coming back, starting wise, is William Willocks and Jake Roberts along with Braden Phillips who played a lot of minutes for us as well,”

Honeycutt said. “Then we have a host of guys that are going to be coming in and filling a host of those other spots. “Nicholas Wilson inside is going to be big for us. Seth Carter and Bryce VanHuss are going to be splitting time at point guard and shooting guard,” Honeycutt continued. “We look for Dalton Mitchell and Nate Stephens to come back and help with those duties as well so those four guys are going to be rotating in and out to help us handle the ball and play on the wing as well.” Honeycutt added that his team will either have a large roster where a lot of players will be rotating or possibly he and the coaching staff might get comfortable and find a short roster. Another big thing impacting basketball will be COVID. “It’s going to be a trend this year where you go a number of days without certain kids due to these restrictions and contact tracing comes into play and we had some of those already,” Honeycutt commented. “It’s going to be a weird year. We are hoping to

guard and went on to play at Milligan. She has coached at TA Dugger for the last two seasons. Alisha Mainer is a former Unicoi County and Milligan College standout and will bring knowledge of coaching the post position to the Lady Cyclones. Mainer was a coach on the Knox Carter team last season that made substate play. Andrews sees the Lady Cyclones at the top of the mix as well as a very good Sullivan East team. Happy Valley will be a team worth watching as well as Johnson County who came to an eyelash of reaching the regional semifinals in 2019-2020 and are a darkhorse according to Andrews. “I think that our league is tough again. Every night is going to be important. You can’t take anything for granted and can’t go to sleep on any team.”

Lady Cyclones have high expectations in 2020-21 BY IVAN SANDERS STAR SPORTS EDITOR ivan.sanders@elizabethton.com

ince capturing a state championship a few years back, one thing that comes with the territory every season for the Elizabethton Lady Cyclone basketball team is lofty expectations.

Lucas Andrews Head Coach

That once again will be the case this season after the Lady Cyclones advanced to a substate game last season before falling one game short of the state tournament. “Obviously here at Elizabethton your expectations are high,” said Lady Cyclone head coach Lucas Andrews. “We are returning quite a few people who got some major minutes for us last year. “We also have some young people that is showing some promise so we are really excited about that. “We are kind of youth heavy as we only have three seniors but those three seniors have carried a lot of the load in past years and we feel confident about our young kids and freshmen that are coming in so we are excited with what we got,” Andrews continued. While the team is young in some aspects, Andrews has three players who have been in the fire alongside the head coach for the last three seasons and will be counted on heavily for the Lady Cyclones to keep their momentum heading into 2020-2021. “Morgan (Headrick) has carried the load for us quite a bit since she has been here her

freshman year and keeping Torrie (Roberts) healthy are really keys for us,” Andrews said. “She has always been solid, especially during tournament time. “It feels like she kind of flips a switch and hopefully we can flip that switch from the start. Then we get a senior back that was hurt for most of last year in McKendra Norris that we are excited about getting her back. “Lina (Lyons) and Renna (Smith) played a lot of minutes for us last year and we are going to lean on them quite a bit,” Andrews continued. “I know I say this every year, but it might depend on each night as to who steps up but I feel comfortable with that where we can throw people in and get reliable minutes.” “We talk about hanging our hat on the defensive end. That’s where we want to start everything and make sure we are solid and that gives us a chance to be in any game.” Andrews has added a couple of assistant coaches this year that he will be counting on heavily from their past playing time and coaching. mented on the incoming freshmen. Other players that Smith is counting on to lead his team is Garrett Vines, Conor Jones, and Morgan Lyons – all of whom either started or were in a top rotation last season. Smith said the league is always tough and this year is no different. “Our league is always tough and competitive,” Smith said. “They do the same thing we do in playing a lot of 2A schools. “University High, North Greene, and Sullivan North have a lot of kids back. Cloudland and Unaka are county rivalries. By tournament time, whoever is playing good at the right time will be the key.” Smith said one thing will be the key. “Our chemistry. We have got a lot of kids that have been playing football. We have to get in the gym and get to work,” commented Smith. “The kids have to come together and play to form a good chemistry.”

arch 2020 is a month that the Hampton boys basketball team won’t too soon forget after battling their way through district, regional, and a substate win at home to qualify for the state tournament. Then the walls came tumbling down like the walls of Jericho when the boy’s state tournament was canceled due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Despite TSSAA trying to reschedule the tournament, it never materialized. Step forward eight months and the Hampton Bulldogs are as hungry as ever to earn the trip they never got to take as a new season starts. And while head coach Ned Smith is not a man of many words, he too would like to see his squad, first of all, get the opportunity to play out the season and two make it back to Murfreesboro for some unfinished business. “The kids are going to be competitive – they

are a good bunch,” Smith said. “I wish it was a normal season where we could get everything in as we wanted it and all the work we needed. “It’s going to be a crazy season, it really is.” Even though the ‘Dogs lost some key players from last season, there is still plenty in the cupboard to work with which has proven to be the case over the years at Hampton. “They have worked hard. We have some size and a lot of guards. The lineup could change night in to night out,” Smith added. “It’s going to be a competitive year for these guys as they battle for spots and playing time. “We have some young guys coming on. When we get to play, these guys have a lot of potential.” One positive for Smith is the fact that the Hampton Middle School boys team has been to the state championship for the last two seasons and with those guys moving up to high school, it has created instant depth. “It does and we are going to have a lot of depth and these guys are going to be battling it out for spots and playing time,” Smith com-

than what we are in November.” Like other coaches, Hazelwood says that the 2020-2021 season is going to be a difficult one to tread through with the pandemic still in full force. “We are trying to get them to take care of themselves,” he stated. “If they get in quarantine for two weeks, they will miss four or five games which is a quarter of their season gone. “Then we may only play two or three games and get shut down, nobody knows.”

ike some other teams in their conference, the Hampton Lady Bulldogs will be fielding a fairly young team with only four seniors on the roster this season. However, the team that head coach Bud Hazelwood will be putting on the court should provide the Hampton faithful plenty of exciting action each night they take the floor. “Bridgette Heaton decided to study to become a pharmacy tech and Hazen Brumitt is having surgery on the foot that she hurt

as a freshman,” Hazelwood said about two seniors that he was looking to have this season. “We will be fun to watch. We are going to get after it. It’s a tough league we are in and I expect one or two teams from our conference to be in Murfreesboro at the end.” With such a small team, Hazelwood feels that his squad this season will have to obviously shoot the ball well and be more patient overall than the Lady Bulldogs have been in the past. He also felt that the Lady Bulldogs would need to wear some teams down with their defensive pressure. With only a handful of seniors, Hazel-

wood is looking to get prime leadership from players such as Skylar Hicks and Destini Milhorn who are the most experienced players. Also, the Lady ‘Dog coach will be looking for Sara Orr and Nicole Guy to step up and play large contributing roles as the season goes along. Hazelwood was asked how he saw the conference play out on the girls’ side of play. “North Greene and Cloudland will be the two favorites because they both have everyone back except one senior at Cloudland,” he said. “Unaka has the Ramsey girl and Kenneth (Chambers) always has a good team. “We will be a better team in February

Others to watch are Alex Lunceford who came on last season averaging 10 points a game along with junior Landon Babb who will be counted on for an increase in productivity this season. The Warriors also will be getting Timmy Mounts back from being sidelined by injury for the entire season last year. Andrew Clawson was another name brought up by Maddox as well. Maddox said the key for his team this season will be converting from offense to defense, defend and rebound, and be tough in the halfcourt. The Warrior head coach sees East to be the team to beat with three of the best players in the conference, Unicoi Co. two, Elizabethton three, South at four, Central at five, and then the Warriors at six, and Johnson County seven. “I just hope this year we can stay healthy,” Maddox stated. “Last year we were sitting at 5-0 and then all of a sudden you have over 40 points sitting on the bench due to injury.”

appy Valley is like many other small schools that are just getting some players back from their football season which has means that besides being behind due to the craziness of 2020, many teams are just starting to get basketball legs under them. The good news for head coach Jeremy Maddox however is that the returning players are coming in with the right mindset and willingness to get better. “So far I have seen that the guys are willing to work and they are willing to be coachable,” Maddox said of his squad. ‘We just actually got our team back on Monday since we are a small school and share athletes. “We have guys coming back that are experienced as far as playing goes so that’s good. “It has kind of helped in our transition as we don’t have a whole lot of guys coming back new

so that has helped as far as not having practice,” continued Maddox. On the other hand, missing out on summer camps that most teams compete in as much to develop chemistry and gel together being eliminated in 2020 has left some of the younger players playing catch up. “Not having a summer, and most of us would agree, is that it has stunted younger guys because I think that summertime for your incoming kids, that is kind of when you implement what your system is, your defensive schemes, and then when they come back in the fall then they are somewhat familiar with it,” Maddox discussed about missing the camps. “Our young kids are starting at ground zero. For our older guys, the learning curve hasn’t been as steep.” Some of the players Maddox said that Warrior fans can look out for is Blake Young whom the coach said could be one of the best players in the conference. Young only got to play in nine games last

Lady Warriors open the Hill era

BY IVAN SANDERS STAR SPORTS EDITOR ivan.sanders@elizabethton.com

Dana Hill Head Coach

W

hen the Lady Warriors of Happy Valley tip off the first jump ball of the 2020-2021 season, it will begin a new era on Warrior Hill as Dana Hill takes over leadership of the program this season.

And anytime a new coach comes on the scene, it is the same no matter what team that may be as the players have to readjust to a new system and way of doing things. One good thing for Hill is that some of the older players had the experience of playing for Hill when he coached at the middle school level. “The girls are really working hard and we are really excited to get the opportunity to play,”

said Hill. “We have a lot of learning to do. This is a new system that we are putting in and we are kind of fighting the old selves a little bit. “So we are going through growing pains right now but we have to work those kinks out,” Hill continued. “It’s awfully early and hopefully by the end of the year we are a better basketball team and can compete for something in the tournament.” It’s tough enough to assume a new position during the best of times but throw everything that has happened in 2020 into the mix and it makes it a little bit more tougher. “It’s going to be very, very tough because we are trying to figure out what’s going to work, the combinations that we got, and it’s kind of hard when you are out here going against yourself,” Hill stated. “The competition is not what it should be. It’s just going to be a feeling-out process the first couple of months and then we have to go from there. “You know - shuffle the cards up, throw them up, and see what lands is basically what it is.” Hill was asked what would be the key to success for his young team. “We have to play smart and not get in foul trouble and we have got to grow. We got young kids that just need to play and get better. That sophomore class is something special,” he stated. “We have three good seniors - Olivia Absher, Emma Blevins, and Emily Lunceford and only one junior so that sophomore class is really going to have to step up and play a lot of minutes for us so that’s going to be key. Besides instilling a new system, Hill also has to adjust to a highly competitive Three Rivers Conference. “I have an uphill battle,” Hill said about the conference. “It’s enough to overcome my mistakes then you are playing these great teams that are around in the area. “In accepting that challenge - I want that challenge. Just knowing we can compete will make me happy. We just need to compete and get better.”

Rangers banking on youthful experience to pay off BY IVAN SANDERS STAR SPORTS EDITOR ivan.sanders@elizabethton.com

Aaron Dugger Head Coach

U

naka Ranger head coach Aaron Dugger is counting on the floor time his young team received last season to pay off huge dividends coming into the new season especially with all the migrating circumstances surrounding all teams throughout the state.

It is especially helpful when you have a returning senior that knocked the lights out of the net as a junior. “We have a good group coming back from last year that was young,” Dugger said. “We have Will Sexton coming back who was third in Northeast Tennessee in scoring last year. “We lost a lot but a lot of our kids that are coming back played some type of roll for us last year.

www.elizabethton.com “We are not just throwing a kid out there that just has junior varsity experience.” Dugger, entering his 11th year as a head basketball coach, has learned a lot since his early days and is trying to pass that on to his assistants. “Every day, I have the pleasure of having two former players that are helping me now and I tell them that if I knew now what I knew then we could have possibly moved some things around,” Dugger commented. “I tell them to pick up the things that they like and throw out the things they don’t. I enjoy doing it.” Dugger is excited for the new season at hand and has a lot of reasons to be as he has a full stable of guards returning for action. “We are looking forward to it. I have some good guards. Joseph Slagle and Devon Ramsey are juniors that we are looking for big things out of both players. “Joe-z Blamo is going to be a sophomore for us and he is athletic – another big, strong guard.” Another strength according to Dugger is the play in the post position and is counting on a couple of players to establish themselves early. “Post wise Michael Heath played a little bit for us last year before hurting his knee and we are going to look for more out of him,” the coach said. “Landon Ramsey is going to be very important for us moving forward as well.” Dugger said that he is a little prejudiced but believes the Rangers is one of the toughest in all three classifications. “I have said it since I have been here but I think it’s the best league there is,” Dugger said. “There is no night off in this league. You have to play to a certain standard every night and a certain effort if you just want to have a chance to win.” The key for the Rangers to be successful is obvious to Dugger. “We lost seven or eight games by four or less points last year. We played even in most categories except free throws,” he said. “We are going to try to get back at playing eight to nine kids and if we can play unselfishly, we have a chance at being a pretty good team this season.”

Kenneth Chambers Head Coach

he Unaka Lady Rangers had high expectations coming into this season but like all other teams, they have had to deal with many detours and obstacles in their path just to make it to this point in the 20202021 basketball season. Head coach Kenneth Chambers who is entering his 11th year coaching high school girls’ basketball said it has been one of the

most challenging ones he has seen in many ways. “It’s different,” Chambers said during the Rangers media day. “We had really high expectations for this year. It’s hard because of the situation that we are in and our country is in. “This is one of the most trying years as a teacher and a coach. It is also hard on the kids.” Nevertheless, Chambers like all other coaches is keeping his fingers crossed for the best this season and he has a reason to be

optimistic about his team’s chances. “We were pretty young last season and lost two pretty good seniors and one that came off the bench that was pretty good,” said Chambers. “We have grown up a little bit but we are still young. We have two seniors on the team and we have a lot of freshmen and sophomores that saw a lot of playing time. “They should have a little bit more experience and know what they need to do in games.” Chambers said that the key to his team’s success hinges on their ability to play strong and confident. “I think we have to play tough and strong. We have some girls that saw some playing time last year that didn’t see a lot of playing time so they are really going to have to step in and see a big improvement in them which they are capable of doing,” the Lady Ranger skipper said. Chambers said that North Greene and Cloudland will be two teams that anyone in the conference will have their hands full with due to all their returning players with both making substate last season. He believes that the Lady Rangers and Hampton were basically identical twins last season being young but sees the Lady Rangers and the Lady Bulldogs making a push toward the top this season. Lyndie Ramsey returns for her sophomore season after being tabbed an All-State selection last season. Macy Ensor, a Lady Ranger that has started since her freshman year, returns for her junior year and will be counted on for leadership. Chambers also mentioned Kiki Forney as another player that has really come on. “Our team is really made up of a lot of good players,” Chambers added. “They specialize in certain things and we have to work together to take everyone’s strengths and put them together and make a really good team.” Chambers said that his number one goal is for his team to stay healthy and that all teams will be able to remain healthy as well as the season starts and not miss any games.

ook around at any basketball program and one will find that the team many times takes on the persona of its head coach. With that being the case, first-year head coach Tyler Chambers of the Cloudland Highlanders looks to instill the same tenacity that the played with as a former Highlander and has carried over into his coaching career to this point. And even though high school is differ-

ent from youth club and middle school teams, Chambers is working hard to make sure that when the foot of a Highlander player hits the hardwood, they exhibit the same drive that Chambers possesses. “I expect us to be tough and gritty,” said Chambers in previewing his expectations for his first team at the helm of his alma mater. “I expect them to give 100 percent all the time and we will be fast-paced getting up and down the court.” Chambers is fully aware of the confer-

ence and the expectations that he has stepped into and having played in the conference some things haven’t changed. “It’s a tough conference,” Chambers said. “I played in it and have been around it and in my opinion its one of the toughest in the whole state. “I think transitioning to the head coach position will be a smooth one as it has been so far. We have had a good couple of days of practice after getting the guys back from football.” While many veteran coaches are having a tough time preparing for a season that no one knows what one day will hold from another, Chambers will quickly have to adapt and make sure his team knows that nothing is a given this season. “We stress that everyday,” Chambers said about the scenario surrounding the current pandemic. “We tell them that in the locker room – especially for the seniors there is a level of uncertainty. “We may play all our games or none of our games. The season may be cut short. If we do the best we can every day, we will come out all right.” In shaking out the conference, Chambers sees North Greene, Hampton, University High, and Unaka being tough customers to handle in the tough conference. “My players know it’s a tough conference and that they will need to put forth 100 percent effort to expect to compete with them. To be below that 100 percent level is something I am not fond of.” From a competitive standpoint, Chambers wants to get the Highlanders back into contention for a district championship – something they haven’t experienced in about nine years. With that being said, he feels that his teams need to be able to compete for substate and state berths as well. “My goals are big,” Chambers added. “Morally, I want to show these guys an example of what a good person is and to be a good role model to them. I want to show them God’s love in me and express that outwardly.”

Matt Birchfield Head Coach

here probably have been many nights since the final game of the 2019-2020 basketball season that Cloudland Lady Highlanders head coach Matt Birchfield hasn’t thought of their substate game at Oneida. In that game, a last-second shot sent the Lady Indians to the state tournament and brought an end to an ultra-successful season for the Lady ‘Landers.

The good news is a core group of those players returns for another season on Roan Mountain with big aspirations of taking it one step further this season and head to Murfreesboro. “We are hoping for big things,” said Birchfield. “We lost one senior from that team and have four returning starters and hope that we can put things together to get back to substate and the state tournament.” With a small team as far as height goes with the tallest of his players around 5’8 in senior post player Mandy Benfield, the coach knows that his team will have to win on the

www.elizabethton.com defensive end and be a good rebounding team to overcome the size differential. Birchfield realizes the road back has some pretty good conference teams looking to do the same. “It’s going to be another tough year,” Birchfield stated. “North Greene returns everyone from their state tournament team that lost in the first round. “They are going to be one of the front runners coming in. They have a 6’1 post player and have really good shooters. “Unaka was young coming in last season and they have gotten better. Kenneth (Chambers) does a good job with them and Hampton is in the same boat and will be a better team also.” One of the players that Birchfield looks to help provide leadership to his team this season is senior Jasmine Birchfield who was the leading scorer last season. The coach said that Birchfield is a wellrounded player who will be the go-to in leading the team this season. Senior Gracie Freeman will be looked to for more scoring this season to provide an offensive presence according to Birchfield. Other players for Lady Highlander fans to keep their eyes on will be senior Heaven Caraway, juniors Taylor Hicks and Karah Fields, seniors Leah Birchfield and Kaylen Fields, and freshman Saharra McKinney. “The last three or four years our middle school team has been pretty good and we are hoping to throw a lot of our players into the mix pretty quickly to build some depth,” said Birchfield. “We hope they can step in there and help us do that.”

Austin Atwood Head Coach

t won’t take Johnson County very long to find out if this year’s team can play among the elite. The Longhorns will open up at Science Hill in their first game of the season. Head coach Austin Atwood said that 90 percent of the scoring is gone from last year’s team that totaled only four wins after making the sub-state only two seasons ago. If the Horns are to be successful they’ll have to rely on several newcomers to carry the load.

It all starts with returning players Zack Parsons, Ethan Bower, Clayton Cross, and Trevor Gentry. The quartet will form up with Watauga High School transfer Jackson Earnhardt a 6’3 wing who can score. “He’s a great kid that fits in well with the guys,” said Atwood. “They’ve taken him in as if he’s been here all along. He’s definitely going to help us when he gets the feel of everything. “I think we can be a pretty good team by the time February rolls around if we get to keep playing.” Earnhardt was equally excited.

“The guys have been great to me. I love playing with this team and I think we can be pretty good. We’re not where we need to be but we’re going to get there. I love it here at Johnson County.” Another player that Atwood was happy to see rejoin the team after a year was Clay Stanley, a 6’1 senior. “He’s the type of kid whose motor runs wide open,” said Atwood. “It’s going to take a little while but he’ll do some really good things for us. “We’re happy that Clay rejoined the team. We’re expecting some good things from him.” Atwood says the team got three transfers from Hampton that have helped add a lot of depth to practices. “They played in our youth leagues up here and decided to come back. We sure are glad they did.” Dalton Robinson, Dalton Osborne, and Moonlight Graham Reece are a trio of sophomores that will add depth to the varsity squad. Connor Simcox a 6’5 freshman will definitely turn some heads. “You can’t teach size and he has that and a lot of good basketball skills,” added Atwood. “He’s going to play some for us but next year he’ll be a force.” Atwood feels like Sullivan East and Unicoi County could be a force to be reckoned with in league play. “They’ll be good and you never know what Elizabethton will have coming back with football and all but they’ll be good. We could go anywhere from the top four to last. We’re hoping to improve as the season rolls on. Everyone that knows me knows that I want to be good by tournament time. That’s our goal right now.”

gun the groundwork when two of the area’s top seniors will pair up with two sophomores and a freshman to possibly form a or the first time in school history, starting lineup for a team that was loaded the Lady Longhorns are coming with experience from a year ago. The Longhorns opened up play with a off a 23 win season and are hoping that they continue to be pair of wins, 62-20 over J. Frank White and a 54-34 win over Hunter Park out of Greensuccessful in girls’ basketball play. Head Coach Leon Tolley has already be- eville, South Carolina in games played at

F

Providence Academy. That’s good news for the Lady ‘Horns who will rely heavily on Miller and Stout to carry the mail if they are to be successful. They also got some outstanding play out of freshman Sierra Greene and sophomore point guard Peyton Gentry. “A lot of them weren’t expecting to be thrown into the fire early but because of the circumstances they’ll have to play,” said Tolley. “We are going to need them to step up if we are to have any success.” Tolley is counting on some more sophomores to step up. Brook Anna Hutchins, Amy Gunter, Aubrie Baird, Marissa Summerow, and freshman Aubree Glenn will also be counted on to elevate their play as some could crack the starting lineup. “I feel like we can be a pretty good team,” said Stout. “Last year’s team set the bar high for girl’s basketball here and now we have to maintain it. “I like our younger players and feel like we got the makeup to be a pretty good team. But we’re not close to being where we need to be just yet.” Another senior player who will definitely help the squad is Abby Lipford. “She’s like having a coach on the floor,” said Tolley. “We need for Abby to play with a lot of confidence and look to score more for us.” The Lady ‘Horns hope to make its second consecutive trip to the regional in 2021. They nearly knocked off South Greene in the first round last year and probably should have so. Miller and Stout will be hungry to get back to that point. “I hope so,” said Tolley. “Anyone that knows us realizes that we will rely on them heavily. It’s no secret. For us to have success they’ll have to play well.”
